WE SALUTE OUR FRIEND ROB CONZO & THE WEALTH ALLIANCE TEAM FOR BEING HONORED AT HIA-LI’S 44TH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING!
As the Long Island economy continues to push forward through 2023, we remain committed to continuing to help businesses across the region.
We are your allies for business achievement, and we remain more committed than ever to help:
• Promote the best in quality and assurance
• Advance the highest professional standards among numerous sectors
• Organize community assistance initiatives to support those across the region
Joining forces with the business community and the community at large, we’ll keep working to help Long Island confront shared challenges-promote local economic development-and keep productivity booming.
For example, HIA-LI mobilizes our member companies to advocate for economic expansion. We also promote the growth of the Long Island Innovation Park at Hauppauge, the 1,400-arce business complex whose 55,000-person workforce delivers a remarkable $13 billion in annual output.
HIA-LI is here to amplify, your impact, and your market reach. And these days, it’s more critical than ever for Long Island businesses to be visible and prominent-and to let the community know what you have to offer. HIA-LI’s resources serve as an important lifeline for the Long Island business community to connect and grow
As we now reach the halfway point of the year, the HIA-LI stands ready to help the Long Island Community through teamwork, dedication, and commitment in order to become stronger than ever
Terri Alessi-Miceli HIA-LI President & CEOWhen the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all.

Rapidly changing technology, competitive innovations, and consumer preferences are demanding an increasingly skilled and diverse workforce. A company may now ask a single employee to be skilled in manufacturing systems and also coding. Another might need to conduct risk assessment analysis while also being adept at marketing. A biotechnician might also need to be skilled at running robotic machinery.
What we do know today is that workforce development is the new lifeblood of business. From renowned research institutions and universities to state and local agencies, Suffolk County businesses have access to top-tier workforce training resources through the Suffolk IDA. With the financial incentives and the state, regional and local assets the Suffolk IDA can deliver, Suffolk County is the perfect place to grow your business—and be ready for the ever-changing workplace and workforce.

When it comes to food insecurity most people would think that as the Covid-19 pandemic ended for the most part, that the number of people in need of emergency food assistance would have decreased. This assumption would be accurate since during the nearly three years that Long Islanders struggled through the pandemic Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank assisted an additional 223,000 people in need of food which represented a 73.4% increase in the number of people turning to the regional food bank for help.
As we exited the pandemic Long Island like the rest of the nation would now have to confront near record inflation and in particular the cost of food at the local grocery store or supermarket. The cost of the average market basket increased by approximately 35% resulting in sky-high prices for eggs, infant formula, fresh produce and other products leaving many families vulnerable in trying to feed their families nutritious meals. Making matters worse for people living at or two hundred percent above the
federal poverty level of $51,000 for a family of four were the increases in the cost of gas for the family car, rent, healthcare and other necessities. So, while most Long Islanders survived Covid still many are still struggling to feed their families and once again, the regional food bank and our 504-member agency programs that we support with food and funding are still seeing increases in the number of people in need as recent as April 2023.
Data collected by Long Island Cares’ satellite hunger assistance centers in Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Hampton Bays, and Bethpage show significant increases in the number of people requesting emergency food support. In April 2023, our satellites reported a 52% in the number of visits in comparison to April 2022. Last year, we assisted 8,259 visitors during the month of April, and this year that number increased to 12,523 visitors. In meeting with those individuals that utilize our satellite centers the primary reason behind their visit is always the same – the high cost of buying food. Some people just request basic staples like eggs when we have them, proteins, fresh milk, household supplies and in many cases pet food. Others require additional support including children’s clothing, referrals to the NYS health exchange program, or assistance in locating more affordable housing and even finding a job that pays better than a $15 minimum wage.
The 52% increase in visits to Long Island Cares also has a major impact on our ability to stock enough
food for our member agencies to distribute to their communities. In April 2022, as the price of food we purchased hovered around $1.31 per-pound and federal commodities provided by the USDA to the regional food banks were less than during the pandemic, we came up short in food coming into our warehouse by 626,305 pounds or 16.7%. Due to inflation, we also experienced reductions in the amount of retail donations and food donated through food drives. In April 2023, Long Island Cares procured an additional 965,764 pounds of food which was a 31% increase compared with last April. While food drive donations are still trending downward, retail donations are trending upwards thanks to our corporate supporters at Amazon, Costco, King Kullen and Stop and Shop just to name a few. The USDA has increased the variety and number of federal commodities available to the regional food banks, and New York State is investing more than $50 million to support the Nourish NY program making more locally grown produce and dairy products available to the food bank and our member agencies. While we survived a pandemic we’re still struggling with inflation and therefore we’re still seeing an increase in food insecurity on Long Island that will require our elected officials, local corporations, and donors to collaborate with food banks and hunger assistance organizations to feed the 220,000 people in need in Nassau and Suffolk County including, 65,000 children.

It’s no secret that the targeting technologies used by digital marketers to reach online audiences are on the cusp of major changes. Google has explicitly warned marketers that, by the end of 2024, third-party tracking cookies – a technology enabling marketers to develop detailed profiles of users based on their online behavior -- will no longer be permitted in its popular Chrome browser. Already, the popular Safari and Firefox browsers block third-party cookies by default, and Apple is now forcing app developers to ask iPhone users for explicit permission to track their online activities using its mobile device ID, known as IDFA.
These big changes are being driven by two related developments; first, increased privacy concerns of consumers that their online activities can too easily be surveilled by marketers and other entities about which they know little or nothing, and by legislation promulgated to address these concerns, notably the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in Europe and, in the U.S., California’s CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act). While the goal of this legislation is laudable and necessary, and the response of Google, Apple and other tech players has been, in my view, responsible and appropriate, there’s no doubt that marketers who’ve traditionally relied on cookie-based behavior targeting to reach online audiences are being put in a very difficult
position. Speaking to these concerns, the American Association of Advertisers complained that Google’s move to block third-party cookies “would threaten to substantially disrupt much of the infrastructure of today’s Internet without providing any viable alternative, and it may choke off the economic oxygen from advertising that startups and emerging companies need to survive.”
Fortunately, the decline and imminent fall of cookiebased behavioral targeting doesn’t mean that marketers will be unable to reach online audiences effectively and affordably. They will, however, need to rethink how they do things. By revisiting an older technology – called Contextual Targeting, most will be able to survive and thrive in a cookie-less web.
Why Contextual Targeting Matters Now More Than Ever Contextual Targeting has been in existence for more than 20 years on the internet; instead of targeting users based on their past behavior, it relies on the appropriate placement of ads and marketing messaging within and/or adjacent to editorial content on web pages. Even before the internet, such targeting was widely accepted in the form of ads placed “in context” with editorial material in print magazines and newspapers, so that, for example, a reader browsing an article on Caribbean cruises would be exposed to relevant ads for airlines, hotels, or other services related to the articles’ topic.
While this kind of targeting is inherently “blunter” than methodologies based on detailed user profiling, recent developments in AI and natural language processing (NLP) have greatly improved its accuracy. For example, one contextual ad platform, Quintesse — an offshoot of contextual ad pioneer Vibrant -- uses technology that analyzes not just the URL of an online editorial unit, but
keywords within its content, its metadata, its sentiment, and even content within its comment section. Marketers can also layer on additional contextual information such as geographical information so that their ads are only exposed to the audiences they desire to reach.
Marketers seeking to advertise contextually have several options; they can contact an online publisher directly and select ad placements based on content categories, or they can do the same with a contextual targeting network placing ads across a group of such publishers. There are many such contextual ad networks, including Google’s Adsense and Display Networks, DoubleVerify, Quintesse, and dozens of others. Alternately, marketers can seek out the service of marketing agencies with the requisite knowledge to carry out modern contextually targeted ad campaigns using these networks.
While contextual targeting may never match the precision of profile-based behavioral targeting, it represents an available and effective alternative for marketers seeking to run safe, relevant, efficient campaigns in today’s increasingly regulated, “privacy first”-oriented online marketing environment.
has already blocked third-party cookie-based tracking (Safari and Firefox users already have third-party cookies blocked by default).
that third-party cookies are an endangered species (although its original deadline for their elimination in Google’s popular Chrome browser has been postponed to 2023).

In today’s highly interconnected and rapidly evolving business landscape, the presence of organizational silos significantly challenges the efficiency, collaboration, and overall success of your business. They simply make your job as a leader more difficult than it needs to be! Silos are the people, offices, divisions, or departments within a company that do not share mission- critical information with others who need it to do their best work.
These silos limit communication, hinder knowledge sharing, and slow you’re your decision- making processes. This five-part series explores the harmful effects of silos on your business, highlights the importance of shattering these barriers for sustained growth and competitiveness, and provides immediately actionable ways for you to do so.
In this first article, we will focus on how silos negatively impact your ability to be an effective leader.
1. Limited Communication and Collaboration
Silos create walls between different departments, hindering effective communication and collaboration. When employees are confined within their silos, visible or invisible, they tend to focus solely on their own objectives, leading to a lack of coordinated effort across the organization. This lack of communication results in duplicated efforts, misalignment of goals, and missed opportunities for innovation. By breaking down silos and fostering open communication, you can unlock the potential for cross-functional collaboration, resulting in enhanced productivity and a broader perspective on problemsolving.
This helps you as a leader benefit from the breadth of brain power available throughout your organization.
2. Lack of Knowledge Sharing
The barriers created by a silo mentality often lead to knowledge
hoarding and the creation of information and data silos, where valuable expertise and information are isolated within specific departments or individuals. This creates an environment where important insights and ideas are not shared with leadership or across the organization, hampering your ability to innovate or make important decisions. By promoting a culture of knowledge sharing, you can ensure that critical information is accessible to all relevant stakeholders, leading to informed decision-making and increased innovation. This helps you as a leader feel confident that all pertinent information is available to everyone involved when making critical decisions and creating solutions.
3. Inefficient Processes and Redundancy
Silos can result in redundant processes and inefficient workflows. In our work with Executive Teams, we often find the age-old adage “the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing” rings true. Your departments may ignore processes and procedures that have been proven to work, develop their own systems and procedures because no one is watching, or create inefficient workarounds leading to duplication of efforts and wasted resources. For example, marketing and sales teams working in isolation may end up targeting the same customers or pursuing contradictory strategies both of which make your company look bad. By breaking down silos and implementing streamlined processes, businesses can eliminate redundancies, optimize resource allocation, and improve overall operational efficiency.
This helps you, as a leader ensure your most important resource, your people, are not wasting time but in fact, are working at the height of their capabilities with ease and flow.
4. Poor Customer Experience
Silos have a direct impact on your customer’s experience. When departments work in isolation, the customer journey may become disjointed, resulting in fragmented interactions and inconsistent service quality. Silos are not discriminatory. We have seen their negative impact on the customer experience reach far and wide across healthcare, education, retail, travel, and banking. Silos prevent employees from gaining a comprehensive understanding of the customer’s needs,
preferences, and pain points. They lack a true understanding of how their work impacts their peers within the company and the clients you serve. By fostering a customer-centric approach and integrating departments, businesses can ensure a seamless customer experience, building loyalty and enhancing their brand reputation.
5. Stifled Innovation and Agility
Silos can crush innovation and hinder the ability to adapt to changing market conditions. Your leadership team’s ability to communicate as one voice with one vision is imperative. When different departments operate independently, opportunities for cross-pollination of ideas and collaboration are missed. This limits the organization’s capacity to respond collectively to emerging trends, customer demands, and competitive challenges. By fostering a culture of innovation, improving cross-functional communication, and promoting collaboration across all business units and service lines, your leadership can tap into the collective intelligence of your workforce, driving continuous improvement and fostering agility.
Organizational silos have a profound negative impact on businesses, impeding communication, collaboration, knowledge sharing, efficiency, and innovation. Smashing through these barriers is essential for leaders aiming to thrive in a dynamic and interconnected world. Open communication, knowledge sharing, and cross functional collaboration can break down silos and unlock the full potential of your workforce making it easier for your business to adapt to change, seize new opportunities, and achieve sustained success in this new crazy business landscape.
In our next article, we will dive into the first quadrant of The Silo Solution discussing how your behaviors as a leader impact the presence of silos in your organization. Can’t wait and want to read Kiki’s book “Smash the Silos”? Email me Kiki@ PeakPerformanceLeader.com and I will send a complimentary pdf copy for you to enjoy.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, founded in 1976 by brother & sister Alan and Lois Margolet, started out with a sandwich shop in Wilmington, Del. and began franchising in 1991. The company was taken over in 2007 by two of its Las Vegas franchisees, Ashley Morris and Jason Smylie and a group of investors. Today, Capriotti’s has more than 150 locations nationwide with additional stores in the pipeline. The Northeast US has only four stores; two in NYC and two on Long Island; Hauppauge and Selden.
The smallest sandwich size at Capriotti’s costs $7 and its best sellers are The Bobbie, a slow roasted turkey topped with cranberry sauce, handmade stuffing and mayonnaise, and the Classic Cheesesteak, with grilled steak, mushrooms, onions, white American cheese and a choice of hot or sweet peppers.
The Hauppauge shop is located in the ShopRite shopping center and specializes in impressive catering boxes for local businesses.

The Hauppauge Public Library was formed in 2000 to serve the Islip portion of the Hauppauge School District. We strive to build meaningful connections and opportunities for our community and guests every day. We are open Monday to Thursday, 9 am to 9 pm, Friday, 9 am to 7 pm, Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, noon to 5 pm.
The Library is inspiring our community to learn, grow and connect in person and online. We welcome ANYONE with or without a library card to visit us. If you have a library card from another Suffolk County library you can do so much at our library: borrow materials, reserve a meeting room, attend a program, use our computers, fax and printers and so much more. Stop in today to ask.
One thing we are not tying to be is the Miller Business Center. The Hauppauge Public Library has the upmost respect for their work and are not trying to mimic what they expertly do. We are the place to get a book (to read or listen to on your favorite device or in print), listen to a concert and escape to a place where there is no pressure to buy something. Come and enjoy a comfy chair, conditioned air and our wifi.

We understand the Latino consumer and build marketing campaigns tailored to the needs of businesses looking to tap into the booming Latino market. With IMC, businesses can be assured that experts with an intimate understanding of Latino culture design their marketing campaigns.
The Latino population is the fastest-growing demographic group in the US, and businesses that do not tap into this market are missing significant revenue opportunities. The Gino Macchio Foundation has teamed up with Molloy University to conduct a field sampling campaign to assess the ecosystem and health of the oyster population in the Great South Bay.
The research team led by Dr. Elizabeth Suter, head of the Microbial Ecology Lab at Molloy University, is conducting two scientific studies through the end of August 2023. One aspect of the project involves assessing the ecosystem biodiversity using eDNA, comparing oyster farms, oyster reefs, and other site types. The second involves an analysis of oyster pathogen incidence among oyster populations at a particular site. The Gino Macchio Foundation’s ongoing Oyster Project focuses their commitment to increase the oyster population to improve the health of our local waterways. Oysters are one of nature’s most efficient filters of sediment and nitrogen, the excess of which is plaguing our waterways by causing algal blooms that kill off aquatic creatures and their habitats. One adult oyster is capable of filtering 50 gallons of water a day, so the idea is to make sure they have a lot of company!
