Attention B2B Marketers: You’re Selling to a Committee, Not a Single Decision-Maker!
By Kevin Lee Exec. Chairman Didit (didit.com) CEO eMA emarketingassociation.com President, GivingForward.org
B2B (Business-to-Business) sales are never easy. Convincing a corporate prospect that it should authorize a large-scale purchase that might transform, or even mildly change, the way a company operates isn’t something that’s easily achieved, even if the company you represent is well-known in the market.
But there’s another thing that makes B2B sales even harder: the fact that too many sales teams focus their efforts solely on convincing a single decision-maker, for example, the CEO, CFO, CMO, or CRO, that a sale is warranted.
Yes, convincing those rarefied folks in the C-Suite is important. And single decision-makers do continue to exist, especially in small companies. But to make a major sale to a major company, it’s much more likely that you will need to convince a group of people whose individual members have different personalities, roles, needs, and inputs into the final buying decision. Think of these people as “internal influencers,” all of whom must fully agree to the deal for it to go through, and any of whom likely has veto power over it.
So, who exactly are these people? What are their roles
and how do they influence group-based buying decisions. What struggles are they facing internally? What do they most deeply care about? As a marketer, it’s your job to find out!
Here are five tips for doing this, gleaned from multiple interviews with B2B sales experts I’ve done for the eMarketing Association.
1. Pump your primary contact about how buying decisions are made
Use any existing relationships you have with your prospect to gain insights into how many hands touch buying decisions, and who these hands belong to. Who might serve as your internal champion? As a deal-killer? Are there internal political struggles going on that might affect future buying decisions? Your primary contact may be willing to share this information.
2. Do your social media diligence
LinkedIn is a business-focused social network so it’s naturally the place where you’ll first look to start identifying and mapping internal influencers, but don’t stop there. Younger executives may be active on Facebook/ Instagram, Twitter, and even TikTok, and you may be able to glean valuable insights into their concerns, hopes, fears, goals, and attitudes on these platforms.
3. Think about exactly who will be using your product/ service
Try to fully understand how your product/service will be used by your prospect. Some B2B products – for example, enterprise software – will be used widely in the organization and touch many different departments. In
this case, IT will weigh in very heavily in approving/nixing buying decisions, but think more broadly about other departments that will be affected. Develop as detailed a picture of how your prospect’s company operates, and you’ll be stacking the deck in your favor.
4. Customize your messaging to cater to multiple personas
“One size fits all”-style messaging doesn’t work when decisions are made by committee. Develop multiple marketing personas and multiple targeted marketing campaigns personalized to your likely group decisionmakers. Yes, it’s more work, but this work will ultimately pay off.
5. Lean into the tough conversations
CFOs typically have the ultimate veto power over any buying decision made by organizations (that’s why many salespeople are afraid of talking with them). Don’t avoid talking to CFOs – instead, maximize your chances of convincing this ultimate “veto-giver” that a sale is warranted by taking steps – in advance – to demonstrate how well it will be received by all affected departments.
Don’t let “the myth of the single decision-maker” constrain the effectiveness of your B2B marketing efforts. Do deep research into who the players might be, pump your primary contact for “inside dope,” customize your messaging to each internal influencer, and be ready to show why all stakeholders will give your solution a thumbs-up. You might not win every deal, but your odds of doing so will be much better.

Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERC)
By Matt Lulley Professional Group Plans 225
Wireless Blvd
631-951-9200 ext. 182
Matt.lulley@pgpbenefits.com
www.pgpbenefits.com
Has your company filed for your Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERC) check yet? If you are not familiar with this government program, below is some background information.
ERC Background Information:
-The Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERC) is the last part of the CARES Act that Congress passed in March of 2020. The law was passed to encourage and support employers who retained employees during the last three quarters of 2020 and the first three quarters of 2021. The Government has 1.2 Trillion dollars set aside for ERC Tax Refunds.
-Companies are eligible to receive a maximum payout of $26,000 per employee for years 2020 and 2021. This program is for companies with 2 to 500 W2’s employees. (Owners, family members and 1099 employees are not eligible for this program).
-ERC refunds are not a loan, like PPP, and the money is not earmarked in how the money had to be spent like PPP money. Business owner can spend their refund check as they wish.
-The federal guidance on this program has changed several times since it was originally rolled out in March of 2020. Many companies originally thought, or were told, that they did not qualify for this program but if fact do qualify based on the new guidance. Even firms that did better financially during COVID can qualify for an ERC refund check.
There are many companies that have jumped into this space in the past several months but they are NOT all the same. Below are important questions you should ask before engaging with any firm that is providing this service:
-Is the firm a specialist in ERC returns?
-Does the firm have a CPA sign the return before it is sent to?
-Does the firm guarantee their work?
-Does the firm give clients an audit ready impact report with completed return?
-Does the firm have a dedicated person assigned to your account?
-Does the firm have E&O Insurance to cover
any errors?
-Does the firm offer long term audit support?
-How many cases has the firm already done?
-Most firms charge a contingency fee for their service. What is it?
-Do they charge a percentage of the contingency fee up front?
This is new legislation and there is literally thousands of pages of guidance on this program and the guidance on this program has changed a couple of times sense it was originally rolled out. There are over 1,200 different qualifying events that can make a company eligible for an ERC refund. While most companies have great accountants or CPA’s they are probably not experts on ERC. You need a specialists to properly do an ERC return and to maximize your return.
If you would like to hear more about this program, I would be happy to set you up with a 30 minute zoom meeting to go over all the particulars of this program and to answer any questions you might have. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

SANDS NEW YORK TITLE SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT
SANDS IS THE WORLD’S PREEMINENT DEVELOPER AND OPERATOR OF WORLD–CLASS INTEGRATED RESORTS. TELL US THE SANDS STORY.
Founded in 1989, Sands has a proven track record of driving significant positive impact in the regions where we operate and advancing the tourism industry with innovative developments and offerings. The opening of The Venetian Resort Las Vegas in 1999 introduced the MICE-driven Integrated Resort by combining The Venetian Hotel with luxury shopping, entertainment and massive meeting space at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, which Sands opened in 1990. The Integrated Resort helped transform Las Vegas into the meeting and convention capital of the world
Sands has also been a major catalyst in Macao’s expansion as an international travel and tourism destination. Our vision helped ignite construction of the Cotai Strip, where Sands would open its first Asian convention-based Integrated Resort in 2007 – The Venetian Macao, which helped triple the number of international visitors to the region. Today, we operate five major resorts in Macao, with some properties containing multiple hotel brands. We also opened the iconic Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in 2010, now one of the area’s most well-known architectural sights and a key property in Singapore’s image as a leading global meeting and resort destination.
Through each of our pioneering developments, Sands’ innovative convention-based Integrated Resort model has ignited the hospitality industry with new sources of growth. Our expansive offerings capitalize on the complementary travel patterns of weekday business and weekend leisure travelers to maintain a constant flow of visitors into our resorts and their host cities.
WHAT DOES THE PORTFOLIO OF PROPERTIES INCLUDE?
Our current portfolio includes 5 integrated resorts in Macao and 1 in Singapore. We also built The Venetian in Las Vegas as well as the Sands Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which has been a great success for the local community. The Mayor of Bethlehem has become one of our great advocates because he’s seen the type of impact we have on the communities we build in.
WHAT CAUSED SANDS TO CHOOSE LONG ISLAND AS A DESTINATION FOR THIS PROJECT?
We explored several options before choosing Long Island, but in the end, we felt this region offered us the best opportunity to create a transformational development that would become a world-class destination resort for tourists and Long Islanders alike.
WHAT PROJECTED ECONOMIC BENEFITS WILL SANDS RESORT ON LONG ISLAND CREATE?
The resort will generate millions of dollars of reoccurring, annual tax revenue for New York. If we are granted the gaming license, the economic impact will multiply significantly. State statute calls for 20% of the gaming tax revenue received to go directly back to Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In addition, the lease agreement outlines revenue guarantees to Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead, as well as direct payments for a Community Benefits Agreement, public safety, and much more.
WHAT SMALL BUSINESS/SUPPLIER OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE FOR LONG ISLAND BUSINESSES?
This will be a $4-5 billion investment, so the opportunities for local businesses are unprecedented. Our procurement academies have drawn record crowds and we’ve seen tremendous interest from companies across the region, and across industries in working with our project. Our model includes a strong commitment to source from and do business with Long Island-owned businesses - because we believe that our developments do best when the businesses and families surrounding them are prospering. We are also especially excited about working with the community of women, minority, and veteran-owned entities to help them grow and flourish here on Long Island.

$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.
When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all.

Pay Attention To Young Voters And Young Candidates As We
Move Towards The 2024 Elections
By Paule T. Pachter, A.C.S.W., L.M.S.W. Chief Executive Officer Long Island Cares, Inc. © The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank
631.582.3663 x 101
Recent political happenings in Wisconsin, Tennessee, Florida, and Michigan seem to have galvanized younger voters to speak out on a number of issues. Both the millennial generation and Gen Z are mobilizing in large numbers to respond to issues that they believe are critical to their futures. At the top of younger voters’ priorities are common sense gun laws, access to women’s healthcare and abortion services, support of the LGBTQ population, voting rights, student loan forgiveness, opposition to book banning, and cultivating candidates between the ages of 18-35 to seek political office on local, state, and federal levels including local school boards. Young voters are frustrated by older policy makers not listening to them or even taking them seriously.
The fiasco in the Tennessee state house where two young, black legislators were expelled for speaking out in support of common-sense gun legislation seems to have been the tip of the iceberg because young activists saw the expulsion of two black legislators as blatantly racist. Following the murder of students and teachers at the Marjorie Stone Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida led to students mobilizing the March for Our Lives movement that brought 800,000 demonstrators to Washington, D.C. on March 24, 2018, to advocate for gun control legislation and policies to protect children while in school. In November 2022, Floridians elected Maxwell Frost, a 25-year-old black activist who was the national organizing director for March for Our Lives. Representative Frost is a registered Democrat.
Locally, 23-year-old Josh Lafazan another Democrat was elected to the Nassau County Legislature in 2017 and now is running for Congress in NY-03, the district currently represented by disgraced Congressman George Santos. Both Lafazan and Frost are coalition builders with a proven record of standing up to old-style politics and getting results. Many Long Islanders will also remember
when an 18-year-old Thomas DiNapoli became the youngest elected member to the Mineola School Board in 1972. While young people seeking political office is not something new there is a new intercity leading Gen Z and millennials to register to vote and to campaign for elected office. These young leaders are not one issue candidates. They see America in crisis as it relates to climate change, safe schools, access to healthcare, and combating system racism. They see many current members of Congress as being out of touch with their constituents on these issues, and they are motivated for change.
Frankly, the political discourse in Washington, D.C. is motivating young candidates to run for office as well. They see too many older men and woman making decisions that are out of touch with the younger generation and they are ready to replace them. Afterall, their futures are on the line, and they want to control the narrative that impacts their lives. As we move towards the 2024 Presidential Election pay attention to young voters and especially to young candidates because they are ready to effectuate the change that many in elected office have refused to do for far too long.
