Jerome Teens Organize Local Art Competition By Jaycee Yost and Miriam Brown
Jerome Middle School students are helping to breathe life into their town by organizing a sidewalk art competition called the Chalk Walk from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on August 18th. This event will be a community art competition for all ages. Anyone who wants to participate will come to the intersection of Lincoln and Main street, pay $5 for a 3 x 3 square foot of sidewalk and draw any family-friendly design with water-soluble chalk. There will be prizes given for Best in Show for children under ten, youth between the ages of 10 and 20, and adults. There will also be a prize for the best use of a sidewalk flaw and other fun prizes. The first 50 artists will receive a free Chalk Walk T-Shirt. All of the proceeds earned from this event will be donated to Project Facelift. Project Facelift is an amazing program that is focused on refurbishing downtown. The students are part of a community problem-solving class which seeks to find ways to make our community better. After researching several different issues, they decided to focus on the downtown area. As surrounding communities grow and modernize their downtown areas, students worried that local small businesses in Jerome might suffer. The students studied several approaches that other small towns around the country have taken to bring more foot traffic to their main street. Nculturas ~ 17

Art celebrations are a fun, cost-effective way to celebrate local talent and create a fun event that brings people downtown. Local businesses have been very supportive of the student's efforts. The first business contacted was ReNew. The young students were nervous to ask for help with this event, but ReNew bolstered their confidence with a very large donation. After that, many of the businesses they contacted were willing to donate to help the Chalk Walk happen. The students are very grateful for each of the small business donations and they are hoping that the community members will be as excited about the event. They are hoping everyone in town will come out and celebrate our local artists and have a great time because Jerome is a great place to be. Diez signos reveladores de que está atrapado en una relación abusiva Lo que más duele de estar en una relación abusiva es darse cuenta de lo confundido que estaba. La mayoría de relaciones abusivas no empiezan con un ojo morado. Comúnmente, comienzan igual que cualquier otra relación o pueden parecer demasiado buenas para ser ciertas, pero lentamente, su pareja puede comenzar a culparlo sutilmente por cosas que están fuera de su control o a señalar sus defectos. Esto puede lentamente evolucionar en toda una situación de abuso verbal o físico. El trauma sufrido en una relación abusiva aumenta gradualmente. Lentamente va drenando de auto-estima y enajenando su sistema de apoyo, lo cual lo hará sentirse atrapado y miserable antes de reconocer las señales de alerta. Independientemente de si sufre de abuso emocional, verbal o físico, puede ser difícil entender que alguien que ama, y que asegura amarlo, podría estarlo victimizando. Y a veces, su pareja puede ni siquiera darse cuenta de que lo que está haciendo está mal. Aquí le presentamos diez señales furtivas de que está atrapado en una relación abusiva… 1. Humillación La humillación como una forma de abuso puede comenzar con golpes sutiles o insultos en privado y después convertirse en gritos reales y pasar a vergüenzas en público antes de darse cuenta. No se necesita mucho para que un abusador se enoje debido a la más mínima razón y logre convencerlo de que usted es el culpable. Este tipo de humillación está destinado a convertirlo en alguien sumiso y manejable frente a otras personas y más si ellas saben que sus escándalos públicos lo subordinan a sus deseos y necesidades. 2. Insultos verbales Usted o su pareja pueden perder la calma en una discusión, pero eso nunca excusa los insultos ni el lenguaje soez. El abuso verbal puede ir desde insultos la forma en que se ve, su inteligencia o sus valores como persona y no siempre incluye lenguaje soez. El propósito principal del abuso verbal es desgastar su auto-estima para volverlo obediente y dependiente de su pareja — y de nadie más 3. Violencia El maltrato físico casi nunca comienza con un labio roto. Los abusadores típicamente comienzan de manera sutil con una postura intimidante, levantando la mano, agarrando los brazos o dándole una bofetada rápida para atraer la atención. Esto casi siempre se incrementa a bofetadas físicas más severas, intentos de ahorcar, agarres bruscos o incluso golpes si permite los abusos anteriores. Los abusadores saben que se necesita tiempo para romper con su cónyuge o pareja así que creen que estos merecen el abuso. v

4. Comportamiento controlador El abusador controlador pretende alejarlo de las demás personas que no sean ellos. De esa manera, sus amigos o familiares no reconocerán los signos de abuso ni acudirán en su ayuda. La mayoría de estas personas quiere que usted sea totalmente dependiente de ellos y de nadie más. Al principio puede parecer como si su pareja realmente se involucra en su vida y en sus decisiones, pero lentamente tendrán el control total sobre usted. 5. Cambios impredecibles del humor Los cambios del humor en una persona abusiva pueden ser asombrosos. Por ejemplo, pueden pasar de ser agradables y románticos a sufrir de una rabia total en cuestión de segundos. Este comportamiento extremadamente impredecible es casi siempre dirigido hacia un compañero condescendiente, debido a que saben que éste no los retará 6. Señalar los defectos ¿Su pareja lo trata como a un niño? La mayoría de abusadores que usan abuso verbal como herramienta principal lo tratarán como a un niño malcriado, gritándole y disciplinandolo mientras lo humillan y señalan cada error suyo. Sin embargo, si intenta corregirlos, prepárese para un contragolpe defensivo e iracundo. 7. Alienar a sus amigos y familiares Un abusador sabe que no llegará lejos en su maltrato si usted tiene el apoyo de amigos y familiares que desafiarán su comportamiento. Es por eso que lentamente tratarán de convencerlo de que las otras personas no agradecen ni valoran su amistad. Pronto, usted perderá todo el sentido de sí mismo y sólo los tendrá a ellos como apoyo. ¿Qué mejor manera de controlar cada uno de sus comportamientos, no? 8. Echarle la culpa Puede apostar que si decide quedarse con un compañero abusivo, podrá ser culpado por todo lo que salga mal en sus vidas. Un amante abusivo nunca aceptará la culpa por nada. Son maestros para voltear las cosas a su favor y echarles la culpa a sus cónyuges 9. Manipulación Los abusadores son expertos en la manipulación — es tan así que de hecho pueden convencer a sus parejas de que sus ataques físicos o verbales son resultado de sus malas conductas. El objetivo es hacerles dudar de sí mismos y de su auto-estima como buena persona. Es por eso que la mayoría de las víctimas de abuso continúan disculpándose o perdonando los crueles comportamientos de sus parejas 10. Arrebatos calculados ¿No le parece extraño que su pareja únicamente lo menosprecie, le grite o lo golpee en privado? Tratarán de convencerlo de que no tienen control sobre sus diatribas violentas o verbales, pero pregúntese por qué ellos nunca pierden la calma frente a los demás ni en público.
