Founded in 1938, Manzano Day School is an independent, nonprofit elementary school for children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
We enroll approximately 460 children from culturally, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. Manzano Day School teachers strive to foster curious, confident, and compassionate lifelong learners. Our teachers establish an educational foundation that students will build upon throughout their lives.
Manzano Day School’s mission is at the heart of everything we do. Faculty, staff, and students live the mission every day: Manzano Day School is dedicated to innovative child-centered education, excellence in teaching, and Joy in Learning® to prepare children for a life of discovery and community involvement in our diverse world.
Our curriculum is aligned with national standards and is rich in content and delivery. In addition to the core subjects of reading, math, science, and social studies, the six co-curricular subjects of art, library, music, physical education, Spanish, and technology are part of every student’s schedule.
Our Fenton Ranch Environmental Education Program
Manzano Day School’s campus extends beyond its urban boundaries to Fenton Ranch, located in the Jemez Mountains. The ranch, homesteaded in the 1800s by the Fenton family, provides a setting for environmental education and an ideal atmosphere for studying ecosystems.
The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and striving for excellence are integral to the school culture.

I am constantly reminded of our campus’s remarkable innovation and growth since its humble beginning in 1938. We are a school filled with dedicated faculty, staff, and parents who support reaching for new heights of achievement while remaining steadfast to the belief that a joyful, child-centered environment inspires exploration and growth. We embrace our ability to achieve the dreams of what tomorrow can be while celebrating a past that has shaped our vigorous pursuit of excellence and Joy in Learning®.
In this spirit, we are excited to reimagine our annual Twigs and Gratitude Report. There is no separation between the impressive and exciting moments on campus and the generous support of a community whose dedication to our mission and vision has transformed our campus and the landscape of education. Beginning this year, Twigs will share stories of joyful learning, advancements in curriculum, student achievements, and community connections blended alongside acknowledgments and expressions of gratitude for the generations of donors who have been instrumental in helping us achieve excellence in education. Just as the past blends with the present to become the future, we will blend these two publications into one annual celebration of our community and school.
Within the pages of “Celebrating our past, Embracing our future,” we balance honoring a past that has defined the foundation of who we are and embracing a path of innovation and change that will shape our future. By blending tradition and new opportunities, we will strengthen joyful learning and equip our students with the necessary skills to succeed in an ever-evolving world. Investing in our beloved traditions and new initiatives ensures we continue providing an educational experience rooted in our past while preparing us for tomorrow’s challenges.
Reflecting on my 26 years at Manzano Day School, I am proud of where we’ve come from and excited to see where we’re heading. I am deeply grateful to those who have helped build and sustain the extraordinary education and environment our students experience. Our strong and dedicated community bridges our past and future, paving the way for today’s young learners to become tomorrow’s leaders, thinkers, and innovators.
Sincerely,

Cathy Hubbard

Under the beautiful colors of a twilight sky, guests arrived at the Cottonwoods of Tamaya brimming with elegance, excitement, and an enduring commitment to a shared purpose. Along the length of the patio, votives of dancing golden light rested on a sea of velvety blue and gold satin tablecloths. Above the melodic notes of live Alum music, engaging conversation, and the playful banter between Big Board rivals, brightly lit star lanterns hung from the rafters and guided guests into a world of blue hues, golden Chiavari chairs, Baby’s Breath, and the soft twinkling magic of candlelight. This beautiful world was the visual inspiration of Marina LaVoie, Heather Jarrell, and Georgia Manjoros-Serna.
Three hundred and sixty supporters filled every table to enjoy delicious bites of flavor, donor-inspired cocktails, and a shared history that binds us to each other and Manzano Day School. The excitement ignited as the talented Carrie Frugé, a female auctioneer with a “Texas-sized heart for philanthropy,” led the crowd in a fast-paced raising of paddles, which helped raise over $104K during her time on stage. Our time to Reach for the Stars had arrived, and just like the slowly emerging constellations high above, the celebration continued to unfold well into the darkest hours of the night.
It was April 13, 2024, the night of Manzano Day School’s biennial gala, a night of celebration to support the General Endowment and grow the boundless potential it unlocks for our school and students. While gala events cannot increase the Endowment at the pace of direct endowment gifts, the gala is a moment our community looks forward to that blends financial foresight and the desire to gather,
connect, and contribute. Throughout the years, dreamers and innovators have grown the event to include a wine and spirit pull, silent and live auctions, Sociables, event experiences, tuition raffles, and student keepsake projects to boost the impact of the event. With an ongoing need to significantly increase the Endowment, we can look forward to more evenings together raising our hopes and paddles for philanthropy.
This year, we immersed ourselves in the dreams that wishing on stars can inspire, and we continued Manzano’s long history of successful gala events. Gala pictures and stories splashed across the pages of our past, La Glorieta Gala, Tip Your Hat to Manzano Day School, The Gala in the Garden, and The Diamond Jubilee, to name a few, paved the way for our most recent evening together nestled under the starry night sky among the cottonwood trees. We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our event sponsors, donors, and families who came together to make this year’s gala a success. Our community raised over
$165K in sponsorships and ticket sales and donated more than $33K in gift-inkind donations. Everyone who donated to the event, purchased a table or ticket, bid on a class project, sold a packet of Tuition Raffle tickets, had a brick engraved, or donated an item to be bid on at the event helped us raise $200K in net proceeds, directly benefiting our Endowment.
We sincerely thank our dedicated team of volunteers for sharing their talent, creativity, and unending energy to create a moment that will live in our memories and be forever etched in the pages of Manzano’s enduring gala history. A special thank you to Bonnie MinkusHolmes and Jessica Garrett for suggesting a theme that allowed us to reach out and touch the stars.
Save the Date! Our next gala event will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026. To join our team of volunteers or discuss how you can support the event, contact the Philanthropy Team at philanthropy@manzanodayschool.org or (505) 243-6659.

My name is Sara McCurdy. I was born and raised in Albuquerque and am a self-proclaimed New Mexico history buff. I’m also the Communications Specialist at Manzano Day School. I have the privilege of sharing the stories of our community every day. So you can imagine my delight when I discovered that my place of employment is deeply rooted in the history of one of New Mexico’s most legendary storytellers.
One of my fondest memories as a little girl is hearing my dad say, “Let’s go to the library!” My sister and I would jump into his truck, and we’d all drive down the street to the Erna Fergusson Library on San Mateo near Comanche. Walking through the rows of books, drinking the crisp water from the water fountain, and using my own library card, I was on cloud nine! I had no idea who or what an Erna Fergusson was at the time. I did know, however, how that library made me feel; it felt like home.
As I grew up, I still didn’t really know who Erna Fergusson was, and trips to the library became few and far between. I was a teenager. I had my own car and freedom; why would I go to the library? Flash forward to me as an adult, on a new career path, interviewing for the Communications Specialist job at Manzano Day School. I remember Cathy Hubbard showing me around
campus. We stopped at this beautiful courtyard, La Placita. We walked through the door into the building known as La Glorieta. I had that same feeling of home that the library gave me so many years ago. Cathy said this building, where your office will be, was the home to Harvey Fergusson, a prominent New Mexico attorney, and his family, including his daughter, Erna. Wait, Erna? Erna Fergusson? The feeling of nostalgia and excitement overcame me. Of course, I had to contain myself because

I was interviewing for a new job! But I had to know more. It turns out that Erna Fergusson is a New Mexico legend.
Erna Fergusson was born in La Glorieta on January 10, 1888. She was the eldest of four children. She began her career in education with Albuquerque Public Schools in 1907. She then graduated from UNM and got her master’s degree in history from Columbia University. World War I diverted her work in education to working for the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. After the war, Fergusson became a reporter for the Albuquerque Herald and, along with a friend, started a “dude wrangling” business, which provided tours of the southwest and introduced guests to native cultures. That’s what’s said to have inspired Fergusson’s desire to research the different

heritages of New Mexico. She published her first book, “Dancing Gods,” in 1931. She would go on to write several books in her lifetime. In 1943, UNM awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Letters, the first woman ever to receive that honor from UNM. In 1947, Erna Fergusson helped found the Old Town Historical Society, which later became the Albuquerque Historical Society. She was also a strong supporter of libraries. Erna Fergusson died in Albuquerque on July 30, 1964. Two years later, the City of Albuquerque opened its sixth public library and named it after her.
I feel like it’s a full-circle moment. My parents instilled a love for learning at an early age, partly by taking me to the library and letting my imagination run wild among the pages of books. A library named after a strong, intelligent, ground breaking New Mexico woman who is so deeply rooted in the school I have the privilege of working at every day. A school that also instills love and Joy in Learning® in every student who walks through the doors.

Why Support Manzano Day School?
There is a difference in the academic lessons and experiences at Manzano Day School. Our students stand on a strong foundation, poised to thrive and succeed anywhere on their educational path because Joy in Learning® and lifelong discovery took root in the earliest moments of learning. You can see this difference in classrooms where children’s natural wonder meets opportunities to grow and discover. We celebrate high-quality, child-centered education that prepares students for a diverse and ever-changing world by developing critical thinking, core values, social skills, and emotional resilience. Joy in Learning® is at the heart of a Manzano Day School education and requires more than tuition dollars alone. It requires the support of generous donors and annual fundraising. Investing in the foundation of your child’s elementary education is also an investment in your child’s future life.
What are the needs at Manzano Day School?
Annual Fund - This is the backbone of fundraising efforts and supports all areas of our yearly budget. Tuition dollars alone do not cover the full cost of the quality education, programs, and experiences our community has come to love and expect. The Annual Fund supplements every line item in the budget since it directly supports programs and professional development, restoring and improving our campus and Fenton Ranch, and supporting innovation across our campus and curriculum. Early and consistent participation allows the most flexibility in directing money where it is needed most throughout the school year. Participation is a strong message of support and belief in our mission and school. All gifts, no matter the size, have a tremendous impact on our students, faculty and staff, and community.
- Our endowment is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding used to produce ongoing income that benefits current and future families. The principal of our endowment remains untouched, and over time, the annual interest income we receive increases, allowing flexibility in meeting our needs. Current families utilize funds to offset the actual cost of a Manzano Day School education by minimizing the rate of annual tuition increases. A substantial endowment is a powerful tool to increase accessibility and student diversity through more robust financial aid opportunities and dramatically curbing tuition increases caused by the growing cost of education.
The Wings program provides full scholarships to students from families with limited financial resources. In addition to guaranteed tuition for all seven years, the Wings program also covers the cost of extended day and bus transportation. The Wings Angels Fund helps cover fluctuating expenses that may change over time but are part of the school experience, such as school supplies, field trip expenses, Fall Festival, Book Fair, Fifth Grade Musical, and more.

“We loved meeting our grandchildren’s teachers and watching their precious performances. It was evident how much our grandchildren love their school and just how much they are loved.”
— Manzano Day School grandparents, Bobby and Tina Burns
On March 21, 2024, Manzano Day School celebrated a very special tradition: Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ Day. Manzano Day School has fostered Joy in Learning® for numerous generations of students who eagerly anticipate showcasing their work to their Grandparents and Grandfriends each year on this special day.
This event kicked off with a warm welcome reception, and students’ musical performances. The heart of the day was spent in the classrooms, where students showcased their projects and activities. We are grateful for the important role Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ play in our school community. Thank you for making this day so special and for being a cherished part of our Manzano Day School family.

On a cool September morning, eager golfers gathered at the UNM Championship Course to share a day of friendly competition with philanthropy at the center of their game. The course was still and quiet, except for the sounds of a driver cracking against a ball on the driving range and the soft sound of golf carts chugging along in the distance as golfers left the practice area to find their starting hole. With excitement in the air, approximately 25 teams took to the course as the camaraderie and tournament play began. This morning was sure to be historic, for it was Manzano Day School’s first golf tournament. It also just happened to be the morning of September 11, 2001.
No one on the course that day could have foreseen the incredible tragedy that would unfold, and the exciting chatter of the morning quickly turned into a day of somber silence.
As the devastating news began to make its way to players, there was a slow trickle of teams heading back to the clubhouse area to say their goodbyes and return home to loved ones. Fighter jets and aircraft taking off from Kirtland Air Force Base could be seen in the distance for those who stayed and shared a meal after the tournament. It was a moment forever etched in the minds of those first tournament players, volunteers, and supporters who worked to create a new way to fundraise for students needing educational opportunities.
Twenty-five years ago, before the tradition of a dedicated golf tournament began, there were only a few special fundraising events at Manzano: the biennial gala, the Good Apple Dinner, and occasionally a raffle. The critical need for fundraising to support current needs and prepare for advancing the school was already
showing itself. Through many discussions and careful thought, the Head of School, Board members, and tournament Chairs decided that a golf tournament would be the next fundraising event, rather than their first thought of creating a tennis tournament. Innovation in events was what Manzano needed to begin introducing additional fundraising opportunities and the opportunity to widen the field of donors beyond just current families. With so many needs emerging at the school, the critical decision before them was determining which of the needs would benefit from the golf tournament proceeds.
At the tail end of the eighties, a growing group of parent voices initiated the desire to create a scholarship fund for families who could not otherwise afford tuition. Through determination and the philanthropy of passionate donors,
Wings Scholarships took flight, and a new and meaningful need for fundraising was necessary to sustain the program. Initially, fundraising efforts for Wings students were achieved through individual donors who pledged a six-year commitment to satisfy the full tuition of one specific student. An individually based approach became increasingly complex and sometimes fell short of the full tuition for guaranteeing enrollment for all six years at Manzano. Rather than drawing these remaining funds from the financial aid program, the decision was made to dedicate golf tournament proceeds to the Wings Scholarship program. This decision proved to successfully grow support for not only Wings but also the golf tournament itself.
The golf tournament became a passion project for the previous Head of School, Neal Piltch, who has played in most tournaments over the past twenty-four years. At this year’s tournament, his team included two teammates, Bruce and Scott Hoover, who supported and played in the first golf tournament twenty-four years ago. Neal continues to strongly believe, “The opportunity for great education should not be based on economic ability. The Wings program allows that opportunity for economically challenged families.” This sentiment continues to resonate with every facet

of our community. Donors across generations continue to support the desire to give educational wings to students with limited resources. We currently have seven Endowed Wings funds, and the program is entirely selfsustaining. Manzano remains driven to increase the number of scholarships available and the number of students who have access to a Manzano Day School education. While we are still growing our Wings Scholarship program, we will continue to dedicate the annual golf tournament proceeds to this initiative.
Due to the hard work and dedication of past and current staff, volunteers, and leadership over the last quarter of a century, opportunities to support the golf tournament continue to increase, dramatically impacting the event’s overall success. The number of tournament sponsorships and teams available to participate has increased in the previous two decades. In addition, the creation of tournament enhancements like Raffle prizes, Pro Packs, and tournament games have significantly boosted same-day donations. The most significant opportunity to affect the tournament’s impact continues to be the support we receive from the sidelines. Community members who want to support the Wings program can participate with a family or business Hole sponsorship, give an

Alumni shout-out to a graduate, or help underwrite the event with a Birdie or Community sponsorship. One thing has remained consistent since its inception: the annual golf tournament relies on multiple revenue streams to raise the funds necessary to provide scholarships and access to Manzano Day School. While the golf tournament remains our only event dedicated to the Wings program, it isn’t the only way impassioned donors have increased scholarship opportunities. Direct donations to the Endowed Wings fund have been and will continue to be integral to the program’s success.
On that cool September morning at the UNM golf course, Manzano Day School raised $19,500 in proceeds, the first of many successful outcomes. The $73K in net proceeds from the 23rd Annual Golf Tournament was the culmination of many incremental steps taken by innovators, supporters, players, and donors and a collective desire to continue pushing the boundary of the tournament’s impact on our school. When asked what his hope for the next 24 years of the golf tournament is, Neal responded, “I wish for nothing but continued success. It’s an event where camaraderie, community building, and having a good time allows Manzano Day School to continue growing the Wings Program.”

Our 25th Annual Golf Tournament will take place at Sandia Golf Club on Friday, September 26, 2025. For more information and opportunities to support the event, contact the Philanthropy Team at philanthropy@manzanodayschool.org or (505) 243-6659.

Fifth-grade traditions hold a special place in our school community, marking the culmination of students’ elementary journey and celebrating their growth, achievements, and contributions. These cherished traditions, from the chile ristras to the fifth grade musical and graduation ceremony, provide opportunities for reflection, connection, and joy. These traditions honor the values and culture of our school and create lasting memories that help our graduates transition to the next chapter with confidence and a deep sense of belonging.
Chile traditions are an exciting part of fifth grade at Manzano Day School, bringing students together to celebrate New Mexico’s culture. Each year, fifth graders join Dr. Palomares to roast fresh chiles, filling the air with a smoky, spicy scent. They also take part in making colorful chile ristras, stringing together dried chiles that symbolize warmth, good luck, and community. These traditions are a fun and meaningful way for students to connect with their heritage, work together, and create lasting memories.

At Manzano I learned that family can mean the people you spend your day with and that family can also be a place where you spend your time. To me, Manzano means friends, family, and memories. To me, Manzano will forever mean home.
“

Since Pre-K, Manzano Day School students have been visiting Fenton Ranch, forming a special bond with this incredible outdoor space. This final Fenton Ranch experience is not only an academic highlight but also a celebration of teamwork, independence, and the lasting memories created throughout their years at Manzano Day School.

In May 2024, Manzano Day School fifth-graders delighted audiences with a spectacular performance of Finding Nemo, Jr.! This heartwarming musical brought the underwater world to life with vibrant costumes, catchy songs, and outstanding performances. Our talented students worked collaboratively, pouring their creativity and energy into every aspect of the production—from acting, singing, and dancing to making props and creating breathtaking scene artwork. Finding Nemo, Jr. was a fin-tastic success!

The fifth grade graduation ceremony is a cherished tradition, celebrating the growth, achievements, and milestones of our graduating class as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their educational journey. Families gather to honor their children’s accomplishments, share in their pride, and reflect on the meaningful experiences that have shaped their time at Manzano Day School.

You’ve seen their names on plaques and buildings around the Manzano Day School campus, but who are some of the families who have done so much for our community through the years?

Tom and Nancy Growney moved to Albuquerque from West Texas in 1966. A year later, they enrolled their oldest son, Tom, in first grade at Manzano Day School. Their second son, Dan, started at MDS a few years later. “We both remember playing in The Meadow where the old massive apple tree was located,” Tom recalls. Tom and Dan graduated from MDS and went on to Albuquerque Academy and then to college. It wasn’t until the younger Tom married Leigh and had a family of their own, son Ryan and daughter Caroline, that his mother Nancy made a quote “very compelling case” to enroll Ryan and Caroline at Manzano Day School. “The impact of MDS on two generations of the Growney family cannot be understated both academically and socially,” says Tom. In fact, Ryan’s best man at his wedding was a lifelong friend from Manzano Day School.
As an MDS alumnus and parent, the younger Tom was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees in the late 90s. He says the school faced massive physical infrastructure issues at the time. The old Sunset Inn building on campus was on the verge of decay and unable to accommodate an elementary school. Tom says the entire MDS community came together and executed the capital campaign to address those issues and build an endowment for the school. The Sunset Inn was eventually demolished and replaced by the main building you see today, including The Growney Assembly Center, or the GAC, a space where our kids eat lunch, where they watch performances, or where they simply gather before and after school. “Seeing firsthand the plan and impact on the students made my family committed to directing our resources to MDS. I find it hard to believe that the ‘new’ facilities are now two decades old.” Tom finishes with, “Joy in Learning® is certainly a phrase that our family took to heart.”

The Peterson family began their journey at Manzano Day School in the mid-1970s. Six Peterson kids have been Manzano kids, spread across two generations. “Manzano is integral to our family’s history. The first day of school, Halloween parades, and Grandparents’ Day, so many childhood moments and memories are associated with Manzano,” says Mae Peterson. When Mae’s father, Jim Peterson, and his wife, Mary, realized there just wasn’t enough time in the classroom or resources to help students struggling with reading and language obstacles, they saw a way to help. The Peterson Program was started in 1997 after the Petersons provided funding for materials to assist students who needed extra help. Two years later, The Peterson Learning Center was created on campus. “We believe it’s of utmost importance that a learning difference does not come with negative connotations. This is especially important as young ones begin their educational journey.” Mae continues, “The Learning Center is about enrichment

but most importantly about building self-confidence and Joy in Learning®.” Mae says her family is very proud of the Learning Center but credits its success to the many teachers and students that have passed through the doors, “we occasionally receive letters from students expressing their appreciation.” Mae says, “Those letters are heartwarming.”
Jim Peterson passed away in 2023. As the Peterson Learning Center demonstrates, he was a strong educational advocate. He put himself through college and law school and paid for several family members to attend school. Mae says her father offered advice, moral support, and financial assistance where he could because, from his perspective, education equaled options.
“In the Peterson Learning Center, we foster a love for spelling and reading through small-group direct instruction. Our targeted approach helps identify and address any spelling and/or reading gaps, ensuring students build a strong foundation in literacy.”
—Janalyn Maes Peterson Learning Center Director

We eagerly anticipate celebrating the Class of 2025 on Friday, May 2, 2025. Stay tuned for more details! SAVE THE DATE!
Alum families carry the torch of our legacy long after the sound of bagpipes fades, and students take their final steps across the graduation stage. Staying connected is a powerful way to foster a sense of community, celebrate shared achievements, and provide invaluable support to current students. We are eager to celebrate the journey of excellence our alums have embarked upon since we spent our days together on campus. We are working to rekindle and strengthen the bonds between us.
Since graduation, our alums have dispersed far and wide, pursuing diverse paths in various activities, achievements, careers, and endeavors. They’ve achieved incredible successes and significant milestones, and one thing unites them all. Each of them spent their formative years at our beloved school. Manzano Day School is where lifelong friendships were forged, knowledge and joy were blended to achieve excellence, and where dreams of the future began to take shape. While our alum families have moved
beyond the walls of our campus, they are never far from our thoughts.
We would love to hear from our past families! Your voice is an integral part of our community, and we look forward to celebrating all you’ve accomplished while reflecting on the moments that made your time here unforgettable. Whether it’s a personal milestone, a professional achievement, a cherished memory from your time here, or a reflection about an educator who made an impact, we are eager to hear from you. Hearing these experiences and opportunities reminds our students of the boundless possibilities that begin within these walls. Your engagement fosters a vibrant and interconnected school community that bridges the past and the present and reminds us that Manzano Day School is not just a place you go to school but a part of who you became.
Please send your stories, updates, photos, or campus visit requests to alumni@manzanodayschool.org.

A very progressive thinker for her time, Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms founded Manzano Day School in 1934. Each year, an award in her honor is presented to an alum who has continued to live out the spirit and mission of Manzano Day School. We are currently taking nominations! Nominee qualifications might include outstanding achievement in a given field, continued dedication to community service, or exceptional service to Manzano Day School, just to name a few. This is an excellent opportunity to show an alum how proud you are of their achievements. Please email alumni@manzanodayschool.org with the name and some information about the alum you are nominating.
We welcomed two new trustees who are both current parents and past students of Manzano Day School. We are excited for the unique perspective they bring to the Board and the impact their voices will have in shaping the campus and future of Manzano Day School.

“Experiencing MDS through my children’s eyes has been deeply meaningful. It’s both nostalgic and inspiring to see them thrive in the same nurturing environment that shaped me. Serving as a trustee is a profound honor, allowing me to give back to a community that has given so much to me and to help guide Manzano’s future for generations to come. It’s incredibly fulfilling to support an educational experience that has so much impact on our community and prepares students to thrive as compassionate, capable, and engaged individuals in the world.”

Nick Davis, MDS ’93
“My son starting school here last year has had me walking through spaces I remember vividly from thirty years ago that have not changed, such as the hacienda. I have also witnessed wonderful improvements, like the GAC and gym spaces. I am honored to be a trustee and help plan the changes my children may see when they visit our campus thirty years from now.”

Amongst the sounds of the wind rustling through the pines, the faint murmur of a babbling brook winding its way through the brush, and the continuous chirping of birds are the laughter and learning of children. Joy in Learning® extends beyond the classroom into the great outdoors to give students an awareness and appreciation for the study of ecology and the simple magic of being surrounded by nature. Leaving the sights and sounds of the main campus, students are immersed in seven acres of scenic mountain space which allows for a different type of learning. Paddling a canoe across the calm glass-like surface of Fenton Lake, hitting the center of a bullseye after learning how to pull back an arrow, correctly identifying trees and pond life, and figuring out what wildlife may occupy the habitats in the distance are the lessons of this picturesque getaway. For 50 years, generations of Manzano Day School students have fallen in love with Fenton Ranch.

Visiting Fenton is more than a field trip; it’s a place where lessons about the awe and beauty of nature intertwine with memories of discovery and friendship. It’s telling jokes next to the crackle of a campfire after roasting a marshmallow to a crispy golden hue or catching it on fire and burning it to a crisp. It’s hiking the winding mountain trail to play hide and seek at one of the Rock Cities and then racing back down to wade in the stream. It’s gathering in a circle on the floor of the Great Room to begin the lessons of the day and ending the evening sprawled out in pajamas, listening to bedtime stories before lights out. It’s also about reuniting with friends during summer or Alumni camp to reminisce into the late night hours, read and write in the Hubcap Garden after arts and crafts, and look for rainbows after a light Jemez Mountain rainstorm. In thousands of Fenton Ranch Journals are the stories and pictures about cherished memories and the affection felt for Fenton.
This is the incredible legacy Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Horn gave the families of Manzano Day School. In 1974, the Horn family generously donated Fenton Ranch, which the Fenton family originally homesteaded in the 1890s. The Horn family also contributed to the 1984 renovation project that added on the Great Room, built a dining room, and modernized the rest of the main house. We are incredibly grateful for all the donors who have continued to contribute to the success and maintenance of Fenton Ranch over the last 50 years. Generosity continues to impact the renovation of this beloved place through gifts to the Annual fund combined with direct donations from families still inspired by learning at Fenton. A restricted endowed fund, the Kathy Rimshaw Endowment, draws 4% of earnings annually to support ongoing needs like equipment, supplies, and renovation projects. This fund was lovingly named after Kathy Rimshaw, a devoted and beloved teacher who truly loved the Fenton Ranch program. It is a love shared by many in the Manzano Day School community.

Fenton Ranch continues to be a bridge that connects our past and future students. It’s where the laughter and joy of our graduates echo in the adventures of our students today. For current students, Fenton is an active reminder that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. For alums, it’s a magical place where memories of joy, learning, and childhood live on. Together, each of these generations keeps the spirit of Fenton Ranch alive, ensuring its magic endures for generations to come.
We would love to connect with you about the love you have for Fenton Ranch. Please send your stories, memories, pictures, and journal entries to philanthropy@manzanodayschool.org.

Twenty-five years of dedication and service to an institution is a remarkable milestone. It represents a quarter of a century, a period long enough to witness profound changes, cultivate meaningful relationships, and transform challenges into achievements. Our Head of School, Cathy Hubbard, celebrated 25 years at Manzano Day School. It was a journey that began standing at a chalkboard teaching Joy in Learning® to First graders and evolved into taking her place in the history of Manzano Day School, leading from the historic corner office of La Glorieta. At the end of this school year, we honor another milestone and celebrate her new path, the joyful journey of retirement.
Please join us in extending our heartfelt gratitude to Cathy Hubbard for her extraordinary service to our school. While we will miss her presence on campus, we are excited to celebrate her achievements and the impact she has made during her tenure. If you would like to send Cathy a message

of appreciation or make a gift in her honor, please reach out to the Philanthropy team at philanthropy@manzanodayschool.org or (505) 243-6659. Cards, letters, and notes can be sent to:
Manzano Day School
Philanthropy Office 1801 Central Avenue NW Albuquerque, NM 87104

Be on the lookout! Manzano Day School’s new Head of School will be announced soon followed by a feature in our next Twigs.

Founded in 1988, the Wings Scholarship Program provides full scholarships to students from families with limited economic resources. These transformative scholarships are made possible through the generosity of our donors and the proceeds from our annual golf tournament. Each Wings scholarship supports a student throughout their entire journey at Manzano Day School. Once a scholarship recipient graduates, the opportunity is passed to a new student, creating a lasting cycle of support and opportunity.

The biennial gala is a cherished tradition at Manzano Day School, celebrating educational excellence and community support. Proceeds benefit Manzano Day School’s General Endowment, which provides the financial foundation necessary to sustain and enhance the school’s excellence, ensuring a fiscally strong present and future. A thriving endowment grows its earnings each year, generating essential funds that go directly back into the school— whether for new buses, playgrounds, or expanding academic opportunities. The success of the 2024 gala strengthens that mission, reinforcing our commitment to Joy in Learning® for generations to come.

Years ago, a time capsule was buried on our campus, holding cherished memories and messages for the future. Unfortunately, its exact location has been lost to time. Now, we’re inviting the community to join us in finding it.
If you have any information, photos, or stories about the time capsule, please reach out to us at philanthropy@manzanodayschool.org. Together, we can uncover this special piece of Manzano Day School history!
Beneath this stone lies a time capsule buried during our 50th Anniversary school year, 19881989 A.D. Inside are mementos of our Manzano Day School family to remain untouched until the school year 2038-2039 A.D. When this capsule is to be reopened during the school’s 100th Anniversary year. May our legacy of Joy in Learning continue for generations to come. “ “
