Our Students and Teachers We enroll approximately 460 children from culturally, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. Manzano Day School teachers strive to foster curious, confident, and compassionate lifelong learners. Our teachers establish an educational foundation that students will build upon throughout their lives. Our Approach to Learning Manzano Day School’s mission is at the heart of everything we do. Faculty, staff, and students live the mission every day: Manzano Day School is dedicated to innovative child-centered education, excellence in teaching, and Joy in Learning® to prepare children for a life of discovery and community involvement in our diverse world. Our curriculum is aligned with national standards and is rich in content and delivery. In addition to the core subjects of reading, math, science, and social studies, the six co-curricular subjects of art, library, music, physical education, Spanish, and technology are part of every student’s schedule. Our Fenton Ranch Environmental Education Program Manzano Day School’s campus extends beyond its urban boundaries to Fenton Ranch, located in the Jemez Mountains. The ranch, homesteaded in the 1800s by the Fenton family, provides a setting for environmental education and an ideal atmosphere for studying ecosystems. Manzano Day School is governed by a Board of Trustees who are entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the school. The Board consists of current and past parents, as well as members of the community. They serve a three-year term and can be re-elected for additional terms, but the consecutive years of service cannot exceed nine. The Board’s key responsibilities include ensuring the school’s financial health, setting overall policies, and appointing the Head of

School, who oversees the school’s daily operations. Our Board is essential in guiding and supporting the administration in bringing our initiatives to life. They are a source of energy and enthusiasm for our vision, working collaboratively with the administration in committees to help us achieve our goals. The Board is committed to the present and future

success of Manzano Day School, not just for our children today but for generations to come. By volunteering and donating, they help make the dreams of Manzano Day School a reality. We would like to welcome six new members to our Board of Trustees this year - Cai Buck, Sandy Buffett, Nilo Gonzalez, Lisa Kruger, Adam Leyba, and Dominic Serna.

We asked our Board members, “In your opinion, what sets Manzano Day School apart in providing an excellent educational experience?”

I believe our amazing faculty and staff make Manzano Day School special. We have talented teachers who genuinely care for our children. My children have been excited each day to go to school to learn and play.

Angela Miller

So many things. The Fenton experience is extraordinary, with the environmental education, the beautiful setting, and a chance to take those first steps toward independence away from home. The quality and dedication of the teachers and staff are unmatched. The students support each other. I never see so much as a disagreement while crossing the playground. The kindness and community of the students create a perfect learning environment, so far from the conventional wisdom that children can and will be mean. The many opportunities to present work and to perform give Manzano students a poise that sets them apart from their peers when they graduate.

Manzano Day School’s mission of Joy in Learning® sets the foundation for a unique and exceptional experience. MDS cultivates young learners to experience the world around them through a lens of exploration and joy. Throughout a student’s educational journey, they are grounded in the core values of respect, responsibility, striving for excellence, and integrity. This foundation in early childhood allows students to learn how to show up as their best selves in our community today and throughout their lives.

Manzano has a curriculum and culture of giving students unique experiences as part of their education here. Field trips are relevant and carefully chosen to integrate with what they are learning. Fenton Ranch is a gem that truly enhances the educational and social experience at MDS. The traditions of each grade at Manzano give community members something to look forward to and be excited about each year at school.

Headlines Dear Manzano Day School Community, Welcome to this year’s Twigs magazine, where we invite you to take a bite out of excellence! As you turn these pages, you’ll embark on a journey that celebrates the extraordinary tapestry of achievement and ambition that surrounds us on our beautiful campus. The theme, “Bite into Excellence,” is more than a phrase. It reflects the voracious appetite for knowledge and greatness that characterizes our community. We believe that excellence isn’t a destination but a journey. It’s the sum of countless small steps and daily choices that lead to remarkable outcomes. Each story within these pages is a testament to the diligence, determination, and passion our students, faculty, and staff pour into every endeavor. In September, we hosted the ISAS Visiting Accreditation Team as part of our reaccreditation process. This process was a valuable opportunity to reflect upon and share the many ways we create joy on campus and in our curriculum. The visiting team of educators remarked in their findings that we “create a child-centered environment where students feel loved, valued, and become the very best they can be.” Manzano Day School lays the foundation for future success by nurturing Joy in Learning®, teaching resilience in the face of challenges, and creating an environment where students can explore, question, and grow. As we look to the future, we see a bright and exciting path ahead. We are setting our sights on the stars and reaching for new heights of achievement. Our students are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will shape the world in the years to come, and they are doing so with the spirit of excellence. Within Twigs, you will see excellence brought to life. So, take a bite out of excellence with us and savor the flavors of our incredible community. Thank you for joining us on this journey as we continue to nurture the potential of our students, build a solid foundation for their future success, and reach for the stars with unwavering determination.

Sincerely, Cathy Hubbard

The Meaning Behind Meaningful Gifts Philanthropy is at the core of Manzano Day School. The benevolent generosity of the Simms family created a deep-rooted culture of philanthropy that sustains us today. Generations of community donors contributed to our humble beginning, transforming our campus and curriculum into the exceptional learning environment of today. Their dedication to Manzano Day School is a testament to the value placed on excellence in education and the transformative years spent at our school. At the heart of our annual fundraising efforts is the Annual Fund. Annual Fund

The Annual Fund has an incredible impact on our ability to support programs, enhance curriculum, maintain and improve our campus, modernize Fenton Ranch, and supplement operational costs without relying on tuition dollars alone. Participation in the Annual Fund is powerful! Ongoing participation ensures strong financial stability for our current families and those still waiting to take a bite out of excellence. Giving a gift, no matter the size, is an opportunity for current parents, past parents, alumni, grandparents, and the community surrounding us to demonstrate their commitment to our mission and an unparalleled education’s impact on students. The foundation we set is one that future institutions can build upon to maintain lifelong Joy in Learning®. At Manzano Day School, we believe in the importance of each family contributing to the Annual Fund yearly. Excellence in education depends on the support of all our families, and every gift matters. While we recognize not everyone has the same giving capacity, we believe every family can participate. When Annual Fund gifts are combined with tuition dollars, we all experience the incredible power of collective giving. With your help, we will continue to be a beacon of excellence in education for future generations.

The General Endowment at Manzano Day School is an important investment, providing a solid resource base and flexibility for our long-term financial stability. It is funded by the generosity of individual donors, companies, foundations, and organizations committed to ensuring Joy in Learning® is permanently available for all future generations. Just like the humble beginnings of our school, a single gift to start our endowment has inspired generations of donors to grow the possibilities of our future. A planned gift to the endowment is one of the most powerful ways you can impact the future of education at Manzano Day School.

“

General Endowment Our endowment is a permanent, selfsustaining source of funding used to produce ongoing income that benefits current and future families. The principal of our endowment remains untouched, and over time, the annual interest income we receive increases to allow flexibility for meeting needs and building dreams. For current families, income generated from the endowment is used to offset the actual cost of a Manzano Day School education by minimizing the rate of annual tuition increases. For future families, a substantial endowment is a powerful tool for land acquisition to grow our campus, construction projects for renovating historic buildings and designing new ones, increasing educational accessibility and student diversity by increasing financial aid, and supporting state-ofthe-art classroom materials and cuttingedge curriculum.

The Manzano Day School Chess Team, The Knights, exude excellence. Walking into the Front Office, you will see a sample of the fruits of their labor: several trophies spanning different tournaments. Chess Club is open to Manzano Day School students in kindergarten through fifth grade who are interested in sharpening their chess skills and who enjoy both friendly competition and fun! Led by Coach Steve Perea, Manzano Day School’s Chess Team has achieved monumental success over the last three years, winning the elementary state team championships three years and going strong toward number four! The team has also proved a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. They have won three national titles. The last time a New Mexico school won a national title was in the 1990s; our current students weren’t even born! Manzano Day School students compete in the Albuquerque Schools Chess League against students from other independent schools, local public schools, and homeschooled students. The Manzano Day School Chess Team drew against their rivals at Sunset Mesa once but have won every other match in three years. Whether practicing outside in the Meadow or the Upper School Computer Lab twice weekly, they always look for recruits to carry on the legacy of being New Mexico’s strongest elementary chess team. Now, that’s what we call a checkmate!

One of our core values at Manzano Day School is striving for excellence, and this last year, we saw many students truly excelling in different areas, areas they love and are passionate about. Gavin Hightower, Phoebe Peña, Chiara Roehl, Paloma Miller, Vidit Rai, Charlotte Galvis, and Nikhil Roy For the last 41 years, the City of Albuquerque has hosted the “Senior I Know” Essay Contest, encouraging students in first through fifth grades to interview an older adult who has positively impacted their life and then write an essay about what they learned. Over 1,100 essays were submitted this year, and seven Manzano Day School students were named winners! Gavin Hightower, Phoebe Pena, Chiara Roehl, Paloma Miller, Vidit Rai, Charlotte Galvis, and Nikhil Roy were all celebrated in a ceremony by the city for their winning essays. Many of the judges are retired educators. Camylle Hubbard While most kids are on vacation during Spring Break, Manzano Day School student Camylle Hubbard participated in the annual UNM STEM Research Challenge through UNM STEM-H center. Sponsored by our Science Coordinator, Shari Stewart, Camylle competed with students across the state in various fields and was awarded several accolades. Those include the American Association of University Women Young Scientist Award, the Climate Change Award, and the Richard Bild Memorial Research Challenge Award. Eren Zeynalov Eren Zeynalov successfully spelled his way through several spelling bees, first going head to head with his fellow Manzano Day School students and then against stellar spellers from across the entire state of New Mexico. Eren placed second overall in the Albuquerque Multi-School District Spelling Bee and advanced to the State Qualifying Bee, finishing in the top five! Maggie Shuttleworth Maggie Shuttleworth was one of twelve children to win fourth place in Japan’s 53rd International Children’s Art Exhibition. With over 150,000 entries from 52 countries, it’s thrilling that Maggie’s painting, Beautiful Bubbles, was chosen for this award. Alex Daling Alex Daling was awarded special recognition at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair. His winning picture was named Two Dragons.

Naomi Biffa, Phoebe Peña, Leah Jones 2023 marked 20 years of the Manzano Day School Spanish poetry recital, Voces Poeticas. It also marked a record 98 participants from Dr. Marco Palomares’ and Lupita Kendall’s classes. Norma Ang, the Consul of Mexico, was even on hand as one of the judges. The top participants from each grade level then competed at the statewide recital, Poesia eres tu, at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Manzano Day School was the only non-bilingual school participating in the contest among schools such as Albuquerque Bilingual Academy and New Mexico International School. We had three students take home a trophy: Naomi Biffa, fourth grade, who placed second; Phoebe Pena, first grade, who placed third; and Leah Jones, fifth grade, who also placed third. The students, Maestro Palomares and Señora Lupita, put so much work and effort into this competition that the trophies are genuinely just a bonus! 9 TwigsFall2023Final11-13.indd 9

2023 Musical

Willy Wonka Manzano Day School fifth-grade students delivered pure imagination and more in the spring of 2023 while performing Willy Wonka Jr. Based on the Roald Dahl novel and both films, Willy Wonka, Jr. is an uplifting story about a kind and penniless boy’s wildest dreams coming true. The students were thrilled to showcase their dress rehearsal for the entire school population for the first time post-pandemic. Fourthgrade students performed an energetic pre-show and intermission show to add to the excitement. Several third-grade students served as ushers, and they look forward to joining the 2024 musical. The yearly production is a massive undertaking with more than 170 students involved. This year, artistic director and music instructor Jamie Jones collaborated with choreographer Lindsay Shettlesworth to create a magical show. The students immersed themselves into a world of musical theater with dance, improvisation, acting, expression, singing, scene artwork (thank you, Dr. Nash!), props, and more. Jamie would like to thank the students for their hard work and the incredible number of family members who volunteered to make this production possible. Stay tuned for the 2024 musical!

Maurizio Leo

The story of Manzano Day School parent Maurizio Leo is more than a culinary success; it’s the perfect recipe of hard work, passion, and the rich traditions of his Italian roots. Leo grew up in Albuquerque, where he attended St. Pius High School. He spent his formative years at Mimmo’s on the West Side, a restaurant his father owned for 40 years. “I grew up at the restaurant. It was like my daycare. I befriended the bussers and the servers. It definitely contributed to my interest in food,” Leo said.

Leo also inherited his love of food from trips to visit family in Italy, which revolved around large homemade meals from the wood-fired oven and relatives gathered around the table sharing dishes and swapping stories. But despite being completely immersed in cooking and baking, Leo chose a different path in life, graduating from New Mexico Tech in Socorro with a computer science degree. He went on to work for Honeywell and later co-founded and developed a space exploration app called SkyView. Through all of that, though, his passion for baking remained. “I would still do it on the side,” Leo said. One day, he was gifted a book on sourdough baking. Leo says the science behind baking with natural yeast, fermentation, and the algorithm left him hooked. He says he struggled at first, but when he really started thinking about it scientifically, his first batch of bread turned out! From there, it was a hobby that went from once a week to once a day.

“Even if that first attempt had been a failure, I would have kept working on it,” Leo said.

“I definitely saw some of the students’ faces light up when I told them to follow your passion.” So even before the pandemic, Leo was ahead of the trend when it became popular for people to stay home, bake sourdough bread, and post it on social media. “I never got bored with bread. There are so many variants.” From there, Leo created a website to help others with their breadmaking journey, calling it “The Perfect Loaf.” Leo says no one close to him knew about the website for years, but it kept growing and growing, and a community of breadmakers was born. Then, a publisher reached out to him about making a

12 TwigsFall2023Final11-13.indd 12

11/13/2023 12:19:23 PM

cookbook about bread, which was also named “The Perfect Loaf.” “I created The Perfect Loaf to help others become better bakers,” Leo said. Leo says his wife thought he was crazy at first, but so many others couldn’t get enough of his recipes. One day, Leo received the incredible news that his book was nominated for a James Beard Award, pretty much the Academy Award for recognizing chefs, authors, and restaurateurs.

“I was shocked to be nominated. It was truly an out-of-body experience,” Leo said.

“I definitely saw some of the students’ faces light up when I told them to follow your passion,” Leo said.

But Leo’s successful run didn’t end there! He went on to win the 2023 James Beard Award for best book on bread, is on the New York Times bestseller list, and received an award from the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) in the Baking Sweet and Savory, Confections, and Desserts category.

Leo points out that the core values students at Manzano Day School practice every day also translate into the world of baking.

On top of all his accolades and accomplishments is a role Leo values the most: being a dad. His sons, Luca and Avi, are in third and first grade, respectively, at Manzano Day School. Leo said growing up in Albuquerque, he didn’t even know Manzano Day School existed, but now that his family is part of the community, they couldn’t imagine themselves anywhere else. Leo even stopped by Luca’s class last year to speak to the students about his book and how he followed his dreams.

“Any time you walk into a bakery, you see employees respecting each other and their work while having fun and being creative,” Leo said. Leo says he wished there would be more emphasis on trade crafts in schools and offers some invaluable advice for students of Manzano Day School. “In life, you can determine your real passion if you can find what motivates you, and then you can dive in deep. Everything else, Leo says, falls into place.”

Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ Day

Generations of Joy On March 16th, 2023, Manzano Day School hosted its annual Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ Day. Over 500 special guests graced the campus to visit with students, enjoy musical performances, and admire classroom work. According to Manzano Day School grandparent Carol Watts, “It warms my heart to witness my grandkids light up as they show me their classroom and share their love of the school with me.”

Manzano Day School would like to thank all the grandparents and grandfriends who have supported the school. Your involvement, whether reading to a classroom, volunteering at events, bidding on auction items at the gala, or attending Grandparents’ and Grandfriends’ Day, means a lot to our students and the school community. Thank you for being an integral part of Manzano Day School!

Without fail, every day as you walk around the Manzano Day School campus, you’ll find at least a couple of groups of kids kicking a soccer ball around, and sometimes it can get pretty competitive! You’ll find more students wearing a soccer kit or jerseys inside classrooms, with names like Ronaldo, Messi, and Mbappe written across their backs. So it was a no-brainer in 2023 to partner up with New Mexico United, New Mexico’s pro soccer team. If you’ve ever been to a New Mexico United game, you’ve undoubtedly been immersed in black and yellow, loud cheers, flags waving, and an overwhelming sense of community. And that’s precisely what’s behind United’s motto, “Somos Unidos,” or “We are United.” The team’s dedication to celebrating and embracing New Mexico’s diverse community is what we strive for in our community at Manzano Day School. And with that, a partnership was born. Manzano Day School has a lot of traditions, and we hope our first big event as partners with United can be added to that list: a match night honoring our fifth-grade students as they prepare to start a new adventure in middle school. The inaugural event brought fifth-grade families together in matching Manzano Day School-New Mexico United cobranded t-shirts. Students were allowed on the pitch before the match to watch the team warm up. During the match, a photo of the Manzano Day School Class of 2023 appeared on the jumbotron; the students were elated! The next big event under our partnership with New Mexico United was another fun one! Three New Mexico United players stopped by campus to speak to our students about sportsmanship, demonstrate some soccer skills, and sign autographs. The team’s ethos is hard work, humility, diligence, and action. This is a similar sentiment to our school’s core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and striving for excellence. To say that the students were in awe during the visit would be an understatement! The players stayed until every piece of paper, t-shirt, jersey, and even shoes were signed! While New Mexico United continues to build roots in the state, Manzano Day School is excited to see what the future holds for our partnership. The team and our school value a solid foundation, a strong community, and rich traditions, and we are honored to be a part of their “familia”!

Graduation 2023 For fifth-graders at Manzano Day School, graduation is a magical moment to bid farewell to the past and welcome a bright future of new beginnings. It marks the end of one chapter but the beginning of an exciting new adventure. Equipped with a treasure trove of experiences, memories, and friendships from Manzano Day School, these graduates are ready to conquer middle school. Lucy Jacobson, Leah Jones, Mila Limary, and Bea Lorenz were selected by their fifth-grade classmates to share insights and memories of Manzano Day School. Messages from their speeches are shared here.

Lucy Jacobson To some of us, Manzano means going to Fenton, hiking up to Rock City, building amazing forts, and having sword fights with sticks that were lying around. To others, Manzano means learning from home during the Covid year, or what I like to call it in honor of Manzano, the compost year. Or maybe it means just playing four square

with your friends or playing basketball on the court. Maybe it means making and inventing paper airplanes in art. It might mean playing tag or playing soccer on the field. It might mean getting mad that the little kids’ field had goals and ours didn’t. It could mean joining Voces Poeticas in Spanish and winning prizes. It could mean singing in AllState or Good Apples. It might mean doing the stem fair or the spelling bee. It could mean going to Mrs. Hubbard’s office or getting in trouble because we were talking in class. While each of these are single memories, some good and some.... Not so good, one thing connects them.....LOVE! To every single one of us, Manzano means love.

Leah Jones As a student, I can proudly say I am thankful for our school’s offering of education and friendship and bonding. I’ve learned to make friends and let some go. I’ve learned to make special bonds with teachers. I had to let some of those go, too. Now, since our teachers mold our personalities, minds, and our future being, they will make the wise choice of letting us really go now. They say we are just a community. It feels like so much more. We are a family. I could talk all day, but I can’t. In summary, we did not make the apple, the apple made us. We are all together as one. One group, one family. Thank you Manzano Day School for making us who we are today. I am very grateful for all the hard work you put in for us. Congratulations to the class of 2023!

Mila Limary Manzano Day School has taught me that no matter how tough things are and no

matter how much you feel like giving up, you just have to persevere through it. This school has taught me how to speak up for myself and to have more confidence when I’m talking out loud. The teachers here are magnificent. They have always stood by my side when things were tough and have always pushed me to my limits so that I could strive for excellence. Manzano has influenced me to try my best and to treat others the way they wanted to be treated. It also has shown me that we should give back to the community and to help others in need. To do your best even when no one is watching.

Bea Lorenz Manzano isn’t just our school, and we aren’t just the class of 2023. Manzano is our home, and we are part of the family inside. This family has argued, cried, celebrated, and been surprised together. Families aren’t always perfect and at one point we have to grow up and move on. But no matter where we go to school next year, with all of the new friends to come and challenges that we have yet to face, we will be with each other in our hearts and in the memories that no one can take away. Thank you, Manzano Day School, for all of the memories.

Taking a Swing for a Wings Education The 23rd Annual Wings Golf Tournament was a hole-in-one success! Over 120 golfers enjoyed a stunning day on the course with friends and colleagues, all supporting the Wings Scholarship Program. As in previous years, this year’s tournament aimed to unite people for a good cause and a great time. One team filled the space with smiles as they took to the course identically dressed and channeling the spirit of our very own Cathy Hubbard. All five Cathys kicked off the tournament with style and enthusiasm. We also saw the debut of our Alumni Shout Outs, an opportunity for families to honor past graduates on the course. thank you for helping a child

take wing IF I HAD WINGS

THEN I COULD FLY!

This year’s tournament was a blast! Golfers were thrilled to have the chance to win bicycles, a Coleman grill, gift baskets full of goodies, and more. Many participants went home with a new prize, feeling cheerful and lucky. Golfers also had the opportunity to participate in “Tee-up to Play & Stay,” where they guessed the number of golf tees in a large glass container. The winner with the closest guess was awarded a luxurious stay at Sandia Resort and a foursome at Sandia Golf Club. Congratulations to Kara Buchman, who had the closest guess! The success of our efforts is because of our partnership in philanthropy with our community. KOB maintained its position as the presenting sponsor, and we sincerely appreciate their consistent support. Our gratitude extends to the numerous sponsors, supporters, teams, families, and volunteers contributing to the event’s success. Together, we raised over $70,000 for the Wings Scholarship Program. We are immensely grateful to everyone who has helped us bring this vision to fruition year after year. Thank you again to everyone who supported this year’s tournament!

Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms Alumni Recognition Award

The Impact of Excellence: Mireya Macías What feels like a few short years ago, a shy and soft-spoken student quietly sat in a small red chair to begin her education at Manzano Day School. Her big brown eyes were open, and she was learning about the world around her. She was inquisitive, asking questions, processing answers, and constantly striving to understand. This young girl learned to stand in front of peers to give presentations and speeches, a skill that served her well as she stood before NM legislators to fight for the rights of every young girl. Even in her quietest moments sitting in that small red chair, she was never at a loss for words. She was slowly emerging from her shell, waiting until she was ready to use her voice. What she had to say and continues to say is not only incredibly inspirational but a testament to the power and ability one voice has in creating change in the world. Strong, beautiful, and powerful words deeply rooted in family, culture, and community service can be heard in the voice of this phenomenal young woman. This voice belongs to Mireya Macías, class of 2016, 22 TwigsFall2023Final11-13.indd 22

and this year’s Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms Alumni Award recipient. Mireya was raised in a family with a strong foundation and community awareness. She grew up watching her parents, two dedicated and hard-working community physicians, exemplify the core values she was learning in the classroom. Her parents allowed her to be a part of their work, having honest conversations about the inequities in healthcare, education, and communities. Her parents wanted to give her the roots that would someday provide the foundation for her to spread her wings and make a difference in the community. These lessons resonated within Mireya and became a driving force at the core of who she is and the passion for equality and social change she continues to pursue today. Angela Macías, Mireya’s mom, reminisced about a shirt Mireya wore in middle school that said, “Healthcare has no zip codes,” a shirt she still has today. Angela believes this shirt “has been a central pillar of Mireya’s developing character.”

Even as a young child, Mireya understood the importance of education and hard work as a path to opportunity and empowerment for creating social change. Ms. Zenz, Mireya’s fifth-grade teacher, remembers the “very high standards she expected of herself. She worked very hard to achieve excellence, yet she remained profoundly humble. That can be quite uncommon in this world.” Angela echoed this belief, noting that Mireya always exhibited a balance of genuine kindness while simultaneously being a trailblazer, not afraid to speak her mind. During her commencement speech at the fifth-grade graduation ceremony, she seized the opportunity to use it as a call to action for her peers, “Social change is equality and social justice. It is about doing the right thing. Manzano Day School and our community of teachers and parents have instilled these values within us. Each year at Manzano, we engage in community service events which have taught us the differences that exist within our city, country, and world. It is important to recognize these differences to promote social change. My friends, we

11/13/2023 1:06:52 PM

must take our opportunities and begin to empower others and promote social change.” From a small but mighty student, these inspirational words reflect a profound understanding of the intersection between family, education, and the greater world. Angela credits Manzano Day School for giving her daughter the foundation and nurturing needed to help her find her voice, that incredibly inspirational voice she continues to use on her mission for social justice and change. Angela reflects on Mireya’s journey, “In first grade, she created a game that detailed facts about each president of the United States. It was a very elaborate and challenging board game that demonstrated the beginning of her passion for history, politics, and continuous learning.” Her blossoming passion continued as “she followed President Barack Obama’s campaign. Mireya arranged for her Nana to take her to Hillary Clinton campaign rallies”, after which she “used her father’s phone to make phone calls for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.” That initial interest ignited a flame of activism and desire to change the status quo, which is a theme throughout the words and actions of this young alum. Mireya continued building upon her desire for change, beginning to hone her skills in journalism and storytelling as the Co-Editor in Chief for her high school paper “The Advocate.” She also worked with peers, administration, and her community as a student council member, culminating in her leadership role as Senate President. Her passion for politics and building community continued through her work as a NM 01 District Intern for Congressional Representative Melanie Stansbury and also as a volunteer Co-Chair for the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. In addition, she also began working with the Center for Civic Policy which brought to life her desire to pass legislation that would directly impact the underserved communities in healthcare and education she empathized with since childhood. With each meaningful step she conquered on the ladder she was ascending, she widened her scope of knowledge and deepened her network of support for making a difference. Most recently, she co-founded the “Red Tax” non-profit organization and worked alongside fellow seniors and

legislators to co-author and pass HB134 mandating free access to menstrual products in all New Mexico public schools. An essential piece of legislation that bridges the gap between the healthcare needs of young girls and the lack of ability for some to afford access to menstrual products. As Mireya stated in a video highlighting her as the 2022 Haz La U educational grant recipient, “Having lived in multiple communities in New Mexico has kind of shown me that zip codes determine your education, your health outcomes, it determines your whole livelihood. That understanding has really drove my passion for social change and justice.” An understanding that began at a very young age, sitting around the dinner table with a family deeply connected to culture and community, discussing issues, education, and opportunities. Mireya began her studies of Ethnicity, Race and Migration, Government, and Public Policy at Yale University in New Haven this fall. She hopes to “continue the importance of thinking globally, acting locally, and promoting equity through community building.” One day, she hopes to obtain a law degree for public health applications to serve underrepresented communities locally, nationally, and globally. Our community will certainly continue to hear the voice of this insightful Manzano Day School Alum in the future.

Connecting with our Alumni is a powerful way to foster a sense of continued community and celebrate achievements. We are always accepting nominations for the next award recipient. If you know of an alum who has had a significant achievement or made a major contribution to the success of the communities they impact, please nominate them for the Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms Alumni Recognition Award at www.manzanodayschool.org or contact the Development Office at development@ manzanodayschool.org. 23

Teacher Fellowship Award

Excellence in Teaching Every year, the MDSPA gives $5,000 for the Teachers’ Fellowship Award to support a project, activity, or professional development that will enhance the classroom or student body or benefit an individual teacher to help evolve their lessons or skills.

This year, the MDSPA announced two awards!

Michelle Jaramillo and Shari Stewart for Science in the Rockies

Melissa Bentley and Tammy Jackson for SOS: Save Our Sandbox

We are exploring the power of phenomenon-based learning and bringing it back to our classroom labs! Science in the Rockies is a 3-day professional development learning possibility tailored to teaching science! As we embark upon this opportunity for professional development, we will be learning hands-on explorations and how they integrate to meet and exceed NextGeneration science standards from the internationally recognized teacher’s teacher, Steve Spangler! This professional development opportunity is a 5-day excursion that will take place in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. Michelle and I will travel to Denver, then off to Boulder. This get-up-and-do workshop allows us the freedom to wonder, engage, explore, discover, and stimulate our scientific curiosity. We will be given a crash course in using presentation skills and showmanship to facilitate and captivate our students during scientific demonstrations while strengthening our own and our students’ critical thinking skills. As a bonus, Michelle and I will each get over $500 worth of gizmos, gadgets, and other cool resources we can bring back to help foster unforgettable learning opportunities for our students.

The large, much-loved sandbox on the north end of campus has provided years of joyful sandy play for hundreds, if not thousands, of Manzano Day School students. Other than constructing a chain link storage area and installing a water/ sand feature in 2018, the Lower School sandbox has yet to have any other significant improvements other than for safety purposes. The sandbox is an opportunity to provide an exemplary play environment for our children at Manzano Day School. Meaningful outdoor play offers sensorial play and provides an outlet for self-regulation. Our sandbox offers holistic benefits through self-discovery, friendships, and discovering common interests.

Congratulations to Michelle Jaramillo and Shari Stewart!

We plan to use our funds provided by the TFA to improve the sandbox, playhouse, and adjoining areas on the Lower School playground by adding three-dimensional sensory elements such as stumps or stepping stones, a ringed seating area around the mulberry tree, a paved path for water play, and an aesthetically pleasing, secure storage area for our supplies. These improvements will demonstrate to our community a commitment to excellence in education that stems from the sandbox to the classroom. Congratulations to Melissa Bentley and Tammy Jackson!

Alumni Connecting to our Mission in a Meaningful Way Each summer, our school fills with children immersed in a world of joyful learning and meaningful connection to Manzano Day School. Our Summer Discovery and Horizons Albuquerque programs simultaneously provide summer programs on a campus that sparks Joy in Learning® through imagination, play, and academics. Providing our campus as a home to Horizons Albuquerque during the summer is one of the ways we live our mission of community service and building meaningful connections with the diverse world around us. This summer, Patrick Ao, Isabel Jackson, Maya Jesurun, Amelia Peterson, and Cate Roybal-Ray, graduates of Manzano Day School, returned to campus as employees and volunteers for the Horizons Albuquerque program. It was a full circle moment watching these previous students make connections and inspire Joy in Learning® with students of their own. They worked under the supervision and guidance of Denise Comstock, a beloved former faculty member of Manzano Day School, who embodies our mission and inspired countless students in her many years of service. We asked Ms. Comstock, Horizons’ Program Director, to share her thoughts about the partnership between Manzano Day School and Horizons Albuquerque and the impact being on our campus has on the children in their program. How does experiencing the Horizons Albuquerque program on Manzano Day School’s campus impact your students? How does it help create Joy in Learning® for Horizon students? “Manzano Day School has always been committed to providing exceptional education, and this extends to the Horizons Albuquerque scholars who share the campus during the summer. One of the most significant impacts of this collaboration is the sense of belonging and inclusion it fosters. When the Horizons Albuquerque scholars step onto the Manzano Day School campus, they are met with open arms and an environment that exudes positivity and support. This immediate sense of belonging is incredibly powerful, as it helps them build self-esteem and believe in their potential. Our partnership allows Horizons Albuquerque scholars to engage in a rich array of learning experiences far beyond the typical classroom setting. The experience of our scholars on Manzano Day School’s campus creates a sense of joy and excitement for learning that extends beyond the summer, and it instills in these young minds a belief in their abilities.

I am immensely proud of the collaboration between Horizons Albuquerque and Manzano Day School, and I have seen firsthand its positive impact on our scholars. It embodies the values of both organizations and serves as a testament to the transformative power of education.” How do you think Manzano Day School’s core values affected our alumni, and how did they provide Joy in Learning® to the students they mentored this summer? “Manzano Day School has a long history of nurturing students academically and in terms of character development. It’s heartwarming to see Manzano Day School alumni giving back by working in the Horizons Albuquerque program. Alums who return to serve as role models and mentors profoundly impact our scholars. They bring a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the values and culture instilled at Manzano Day School. Their presence is a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering responsible, respectful individuals who strive for excellence and model integrity. Their journey from Manzano Day School to working in a program like Horizons Albuquerque

showcases the importance of community service and the values of empathy and giving back. They can look up to these alumni as individuals who have walked the same halls and sat in the same classrooms, creating a sense of continuity and a shared identity. This can have a powerful impact on the self-esteem and confidence of our scholars, motivating them to strive for excellence. This partnership between past and present students is a beautiful testament to the enduring spirit of Manzano Day School and its commitment to positively impacting the community.” At Manzano Day School, we encourage students to make positive impacts in communities that reach beyond school and home. The exposure to community service projects as a part of our curriculum allows students to experience the effect they can have on those in the larger community around them. Seeing our alumni embody this spirit as volunteers and employees of Horizons Albuquerque is a testament to the success of our mission and the work being done. We are incredibly proud of these alumni students and grateful for their continued connection with our school and community.

Maya Jesurun, class of 2018 “Manzano Day School actually played a very big role in how active I am in volunteering today. The first volunteering experience that I had was due to MDS, when in fourth grade our classes took turns visiting Roadrunner Food Bank. I remember not only having fun sorting through all the food but also enjoying learning about how the food bank helped people. That experience, I think, really got the ball rolling for me, and I continue to volunteer pretty regularly. The core values and the atmosphere of MDS in general really supported and cultivated my want to help people and I am very grateful to the school. Also, I only heard about Horizons because of my teachers at Manzano, so even though I am an alum, the school is still impacting my volunteerism to the present day.” 27 TwigsFall2023Final11-13.indd 27
