Suits have been gaining popularity over the last couple of seasons, with 2017 being dubbed the year of the suit.►
Awoman’s place is no longer at home as we strive for equal opportunities socially, in work, and through education. But for all of our progress, just how far have we come to accepting the humble suit as part of a woman’s everyday wardrobe? A woman in a suit no longer shocks us, but it still remains a powerful way to deliver a message to the world. It is a statement of self-confidence and selfacceptance, one it appears can’t be told with a simple dress. Never has the power of fashion been so noticeable than when a woman wears the trousers.
2017 has been dubbed the year of the suit by the fashion industry. Barely a collection was shown this year untouched by the presence of a tailored alternative to eveningwear, presenting itself in a multitude of guises. Slim cut, boxy, velvet or patterned, the female suit kicked off the year in a big way and shows no signs of slowing as we move into the fall season.
On the runway Mary Katrantzou gave us velvet patterned blazers and matching trousers, whilst Marni’s suits had a more relaxed feel and came with eye catching graphics. Bigger is most definitely better, with oversized jackets and loose fitting, bellowing trousers set to be everywhere this winter. On the high street print is key, with suits in brocade, floral prints and stripes dominating. For a dressier evening look, velvet and silk options will be in abundance, along with softer pyjama inspired styles following on from the summer.
Echoing the runway trends, actress Evan Rachel Wood also found herself devoting the year to the iconic suit. She committed to a promotional run of red carpet appearances wearing only suits for the
whole of the year. Predominantly a personal decision for Wood, she explained that it was important to demonstrate to young women that a dress is not the only option should they want to look glam, although the fashion industry and media can often make it seem this way.
Bisexual Wood has struggled with gender norms her whole life and regards the suit as that grey area in between things being black and white, which makes people feel uncomfortable. “Sometimes grey areas need to be embraced,” she explained. Other than serving as a powerful reminder of equality, her red-carpet moments have reinforced that suit dressing can be beautiful, feminine and striking as she rocked velvet and silk jaw-dropping creations by Altuzarra teamed with frilled blouses and plunging necklines. Many labelled Wood’s move revolutionary, despite the fact women have been wearing suits for decades now. There is something about breaking away from the traditional image of femininity that makes our ears prick up and forces us to listen. What is it about a woman in a suit that makes us believe she must have an underlying message to be heard? Why must this choice of attire be politically motivated? Can’t women just wear suits for suit’s sake?
Marlene Dietrich was the first movie star to effortlessly pull off the suit in the 1930’s, defying sexual stereotypes as she openly talked about her bisexuality. By the 1960’s the female tuxedo became iconic thanks to YSL and ‘le smoking suit,’ which was both androgynous and sexy and immediately adopted by models of the era. It became the symbol for great change and breaking the mould. So powerful and important was the message of the suit that YSL has shown it in one variation or another in every subsequent collection.
“It became the symbol for great change and breaking the mould."Victoria Beckham Zimmermann
American singer-songwriter Janelle Monae is famed for wearing suits and menswear pieces on the red carpet. Her signature look is a monochrome jacket and trousers which she calls her uniform, celebrating her family’s working class heritage. Her mother was a caretaker, father a bin man, so the suit serves as a reminder to her that as a woman in uniform “she has work to do, people to uplift, people to inspire.” Her suits tell the story that to get where she is today, she didn’t have to compromise who she was, instead she embraced it.
Just like Peter Parker, there seems to be a great deal of responsibility for a woman that chooses to wear a suit, as if it can be used to channel our inner superhero. It is a strong sign of personal expression, a precursor that
the wearer has something she wants to be heard. This could be a message as simple as ‘Girl Power,’ as told by the Spice Girls when they collectively wore theirs buttoned low with push-up bras! Strong feminine symbols need no longer resemble Disney Princesses and the suit has always been about dressing for yourself rather than for men or the general public.
Suits are no longer the embodiment of power dressing for women as Giorgio Armani himself admits, “women have edged out their standing in the world. Today, they don’t have to wear a suit jacket to prove their authority.” But this hasn’t diluted the impact of the ensemble nor its ability to make a loud statement. Sit up and take notice as suits are here to stay, telling the wearer’s story in a fashionable and unique way. ■

If there’s one item high up on my Christmas list that can instantly update and invigorate my winter wardrobe it’s a pair of white boots. Yes, slightly impractical for muddy weather, but who cares when they can make any outfit pop to life. I will be wearing the Raven stiletto boot from Kurt Geiger religiously with black tights and flowing midi dresses.
As much as I love summer, I’m so excited to be moving into winter and embracing the latest fall trends. Most girls will already be thinking about the Christmas party season and what standout styles to wear. If there’s one trend you should be picking up on this winter it would be velvet. Shoes, dresses, blazers and bags, velvet overload is to be found in every store. This dusky pink Patrizia Pepe dress from Manna is my party wear choice, it’s screaming out to be stroked!
Despite all the enticing new trends appearing this fall, I am, mostly sticking to my guns and embracing a ‘less is more approach’ to dressing. Through my capsule dressing experiment (see page 30) I am learning to make my wardrobe work harder for me, updating it with only a few key pieces for winter. A great coat is the start of any winter capsule collection - like this woven coatigan from Great Plains.
My shopping habit may be restricted, but there’s nothing stopping me emulating trends through nail art. Polished and preened nails are a must for over the party season, with marbled styles being totally on point. This design from Melissa at Athena Hair & Beauty ticks all the boxes, a perfect combination of marble effect, metallic and nude. Don’t be afraid to mix them up!
I’m so pleased to see the beret making a comeback this fall. One, because we are close enough to hop over and grab the real deal and two, because I still have these lingering in my closet from the last time they were in style! This season the French fashion staple has been elevated to millinery royalty with styles in glitter, fur and leather to be found. I’m loving this pearl accented offering from Accessorize.
As we approach this season of celebration, I’m hoping that you all find a little fashion inspiration on our high street, that your Christmas lists be long and that your closet runneth over! ■
Every year, fashion week brings a sense of excitement and wonder. The new lines, the beautiful people, the PETA protests. Ria Wolstenholme explores the truth behind faux and real fur.
Let’s be real, the world of fashion is very firmly divided when it comes to the topic of fur. Real versus faux, you’ll have arguments for either side, from some of the most unexpected people. People will jump at the chance to defend the world and its adorable furry creatures. How dare we put them in our clothes and adorn them like trophies. But, you know, a steak doesn’t matter. Because those animals are meant for that.
There’s a chink in the armour with this theory. This idea that using an animal’s skin and fur to make our clothes is barbaric; but slaughtering them on a mass scale and selling their flesh in a supermarket is OK? Something doesn’t add up.
That said, those eco friendly save the earth types should think twice when they put on a faux fur piece in protest of the real deal. Faux fur is commonly made with petroleum, a non-renewable compound that will not biodegrade. The
warmth and breathability isn’t the same, the colours not as vivid or realistic and it is just very obviously fake.
The worst thing for faux lovers is that they’re not always being told the truth about what level of faux their garments are. High street stores in the UK carry fur-free policies, not supporting the fur industry at all. However, due to labelling laws and guidelines, only 80% of the materials used in the product have to be declared. This means that certain adornments such as pompoms, fur trims and embellishments could actually be real animal fur.
The fast fashion industry we are all accustomed to means that each season brings new things and trends to buy in to. This throw away mentality means that many people buy faux fur products, keep them for a year or so and get rid of them. They end up in land fills, unable to degrade. Real fur, on the other hand, biodegrades naturally in six months to a year.
That’s not to say that the fur industry is an angel. There have been reports of foxes being forcefully grown to unnatural sizes, not moving from pens in order for them to grow as much fur as possible to harvest. Ferrets, minks and rabbits have been reportedly skinned alive without being stunned or killed before their pelts were removed. We’ve all seen the horrific Facebook videos, the PETA campaigns and the protests. The torture some animals are going through just for us to wear is honestly disturbing, and never justified.
Studies have shown that making a mink fur coat has an economical impact that’s three to ten times higher than making a faux fur coat. Supposedly a larger carbon footprint is being left by those who are choosing to wear the ‘natural’ option. But further research into this industry shows a different light that those strongly against it are portraying.
Fur farms have been banned completely in the UK for some time now, which reflects the general population’s feelings that wearing real fur is wrong morally and ethically.
However, with the amount of anti-fur protests, animal welfare warfare between brands and activist, the fur industry has been forced to become more organised and open.
Furriers of fashion houses buy their fur at specific fur auctions. These auctions are under government control, following strict protocol and not kept under wraps. With each purchase of pelt, a certificate detailing which farm the fur originated, who it was sold by and the seal of approval by European and American government control is handed to the new owner.
The fur industry has stopped trying to tell us it’s all about fashion, and have held their hands up to the fact that stricter control and more information about the fur they are using is a necessity.
Now, this isn’t to say you should be pro real fur, or you should be against it. But being able to tell the difference between
what’s real and what’s fake, so you yourself know what you are purchasing without having to do extensive research of the brand and item, comes down to the product itself.
If you separate the fur so you can see the base of the garment, you’ll be able to see what’s real. Real fur will be attached to skin, and visibly resembling that of an animal’s pelt. Fake fur is attached to a sort of webbing, that is very obviously synthetic. Another way to tell is to set it alight. Clip off some of the fibres or hairs of the garment, and set it on fire. If it melts, like plastic, it’s fake fur. If it burns and smells like burning hair, it’s real. If it does a bit of both, you could potentially have a mix of both fake and real fur that hasn’t been disclosed. High street stores in the UK are a lot hotter on the strict no fur policies. Where you have to watch out is independent retailers, independent online stores and sellers or in market stalls. The trims and embellishments could be made of rabbit, fox, dog, raccoon or mink without you knowing or even being told. So it’s always best to enquire if you’re unsure. Enjoying fashion is of course something we all like doing. But whether you are pro or anti real fur, you must first do your research. My opinion has changed dramatically just from researching the industry for this article. Keep in mind that not everything you’re shown or told is the truth. Find out for yourself which side of the furry fence you stand on without being influenced by anybody else. ■

FUR COAT£182, METAMORPHOSIS STOLE £53, COAST AT DE GRUCHY Protesters at London Fashion Week
If you’re like me, a complete fashion addict, the idea of a capsule wardrobe can be terrifying. By definition it means limiting yourself to a few essential items that should never go out of fashion, interplaying these with more seasonal pieces. In an effort to curb my spending I stumbled across a capsule dressing challenge called ‘Project 333’, which is creeping its way into closets around the world. With fashion moving at such a fast pace it’s hard to imagine that less could mean more, but it turns out the biggest trend this year could be going without!
Project 333 is the ultimate test in decluttering your wardrobe and getting to grips with a clothing obsession. The aim is to make fashion choices simpler, freeing up time, money and reducing worry. The rules are simple, select thirty three items to wear exclusively over the period of three months, including accessories. The kicker? There is to be NO SHOPPING during the whole of this time! As painful as it may sound, there’s a lot you can learn by embracing a capsule approach to dressing.
What do you love?
Select your capsule collection by first picking out what you love. What are those pieces which you’re always gravitating to, irrespective of trends and which work for every occasion? Build your wardrobe around these, looking at what will complement and intermix. As we move towards fall I’m pulling my suede biker jacket and throwing a dependable designer handbag into the mix.
Black or white
The basis of any good wardrobe is founded on basics, usually in black or white. We are led to believe that black is flattering and suits everyone but this is simply not true. As a dark blonde, black can wash me out and leave me feeling dull. So the foundation of my limited selection was multiple white basics (shirt, vest, camisole etc.). Invest in quality that will last through repeated wears.
You want to have garments that can easily transition between your working and social environments. As my work has a relaxed dress code it was easier for me to err on the side of casual, with some more formal pieces thrown in such as a soft blazer and some tuxedo trousers. My favourite transition garment is a good, crisp white shirt that works dressed up or down.
Only during a crisis like this can you truly assess your priorities, it’s like choosing what you would save during a fire! I’ve realised that I don’t value footwear much, a neutral pair of heels and some on-trend metallic loafers will serve me well. And as we move into these cooler months I limited my jewellery choices and opted for a more versatile printed scarf to bring my outfits to life.
Challenges like Project 333 are becoming more commonplace as people move towards a more sustainable future and embrace modest living arrangements. Dame Vivienne
Westwood has been outspoken on the topic, stating that people should buy fewer clothes to help protect the environment, encouraging fashion followers to “buy less, choose well, make it last.” Investing in fewer, quality pieces to update our wardrobes each season will hopefully make clothing less disposable, and reduce fashion waste.
I’m guilty of being brainwashed by the industry as nothing feels quite as special as slipping into something new.
Through Project 333 I have learnt to be more resourceful with my wardrobe, to rely on styling rather than splurging, which really is the lazy option. Thirty three pieces may not be enough to take me through the changeable Jersey summer but they’ve certainly made me realise the value in what I have. ■
This is the year the world has gone gaga for hygge, the Scandinavian concept of pursuing the good things in life that leaves you with a warm, cosy feeling. So it makes sense that Scandi-cool also dominated the fashion industry, with their affordable and relaxed approach to stylish dressing. In Jersey we may not have easy access to their fashion greats; H&M, Cos, & Other Stories, but there is one Danish brand available to us that is slowly making ripples. Kathryn Filleul, Head UK Consultant for Friendtex explains just why Scandi-cool has become so popular.
“It’s all about bagging stylish pieces for minimum effort,” she explains. “The Friendtex range is about clean lines and easy, wearable pieces that fit in effortlessly with the rest of your wardrobe.” Kathryn brought the brand to Jersey in 2011, immediately seeing the appeal to the Jersey market. At a time when office wear is embracing more relaxed dress codes, it works for those that value comfort but still want to follow seasonal trends. Friendtex call their style ‘casformal,’ elevating simple basics like the sweater or jogger into something more high-fashion.
Scandinavian style is very laid-back but at the same time sophisticated. They are masters at layering and making outfits look effortless and uncomplicated. “This is exactly what people are looking for in their lives now, something easy and uncomplicated and Friendtex completely mirrors this.”
On an Island where fashion can at times
feel a little limited, Friendtex offers a different dimension to high street shopping and you feel like you’re wearing something unique and coveted. Sold exclusively through consultants, the brand brings fashion directly into your home making the whole experience simple and hassle free. “This way of shopping appeals to those who don’t feel comfortable with the service they get on the high street,” Kathryn advises. “Your home is a relaxed environment where you can build confidence with clothes and experiment to find your individual style.”
As a business model, Friendtex also stays true to the Danish approach, being simple and easy-going. “There are no hard sells, or targets to be met. It very much works around your life,” Kathryn explains. Kathryn is one of only two consultants on the Island for Friendtex,
providing a great opportunity for others to join the company as individual consultants. As someone with lengthy experience of the brand, Kathryn is on hand to support her consultants with their business approach, guiding them so that they don’t feel they are going it alone.
Following a hugely successful fashion week in Copenhagen earlier this year, expect to see everyone rocking a little bit of Scandi style. “My customers have really embraced Friendtex as the popularity of Scandinavian design has grown. They find that the brand provides them with the foundations of their wardrobe every season.” ■

Outerwear is screaming for attention this season with bright puffers, leather coats styled with fur, zips and studs and pretty tweed jackets.►
An icon of outerwear, puffer jackets are the must-have jacket staple. If you're worried about looking too bulky, pop a belt over your jacket to nip in your waist.
For a casual approach, layer over denim or a cute dress. For a night on the town, dress up with heeled boots and stand out accessories.
Channel your inner rock star with leather jackets and combat boots. Look for pieces with zips and buckles, the more hardware the better.
Tweed jackets offer an understated elegance, perfect for the sophisticated woman.
Tick all the right boxes in a pair of new red boots.
One of the best and most versatile accessories available in any season, hats are a great way to add some extra panache to an outfit.
Hats do provide some practicality in the winter; perfect for a bit of extra cover in the rain and to keep ears toasty. However, the humble hat has been pegged as one of the top fashion must haves this season and this year, hats are really taking on an identity of their own.
Pom-poms are a staple design for the trusty woolly hat enthusiast. But now, you can get a range of coloured pom-poms and even detachable ones so you can change the colour to suit your
outfit of the day. Also, more is more this season. No longer shall the pompom stand atop a hat by itself; two, three or more pom-poms are all in play.
The list is long for other adornments on hats this season; jewel embellishments will give a bit of extra sparkle, cat ears are making a way onto hats from the cat ear headband trend, slogans are shouting out brazenly in knitted writing on beanies and faux fur hats (perfectly Scandi chic) have all been seen on the A/W catwalk and high street.
When it comes to the style, some people tend to suit every type of hat they put on. Others, it might take a bit of trial and error. The age-old conundrum of some of us ‘just not
suiting hats’ is sure to be a thing of the past with the influx of designs on the market.
Find a type that works for you; a cloche design has a vintage feminine look, a trilby adds some edge, a slouchy beanie is perfect for a relaxed urban look and berets add a playful twist to an outfit. You could opt for classic glamour with a wide brimmed floppy hat (a contrasting band with a feather adds a bit of country luxe) and a furry Cossack style hat will keep you feeling super cosy.
Whatever your hat, keep in mind that although it’s an accessory, every part of the outfit can help elevate your look to a new level, so don’t be afraid to push the boat out. ■
Whether it's a beret or a trilby, find a style that suits you and start rocking the biggest accessory trend of the year.
Think of velvet and you could be forgiven for thinking of your nan’s curtains. What can I say? My nan has very expensive taste when it comes to curtains. However, you would be wrong to write it off as something for the elderly because velvet is making a fashion come back (again) and for good reason too.
I first dallied with velvet in the late 90s. I was a teenager and I embraced the velvet trend with the enthusiasm of an over-excited puppy. Less is more hadn’t reached my vocabulary yet and I went out dressed head to toe in velvet. However, a long black velvet skirt and patchwork long velvet jacket, complete with the then teenage prerequisite Doc Martens, was not the look my boss wanted from his Saturday girl working on reception. I was told to dress more “appropriately next Saturday because you are confusing our elderly customers.” To be fair it was an opticians so perhaps their poor eyesight meant that they were confusing me with the upholstery.
This trend is definitely not to be confused with any form of upholstery though. This is about you finding your inner va va voom with velvet. Whilst it may have made a short lived comeback in 2016, 2017 is showing us a more sassy side. Goodness knows we could all do with more sass in a somewhat depressing and rather grey world at the minute.
Velvet has evolved and has become more tailored thanks to suits from Prada. For your more casual look you have stylish bomber jackets from Miu Miu - the perfect
way to finish your weekend outfit with flair. Velvet is everywhere and you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get some fabulous velvet bling. You can find it in most of your high street retailers and the Jersey independent boutique shops certainly have a good range too. You only need one statement piece to make an impact. Think ruched skirts, velvet trousers, tailored jackets or perhaps just a choker.
However, while I am not suggesting you go all out for velvet - unless you really want to (then bravo my friend) or you are Kendal Jenner, who can annoyingly pull off the head to toe look with aplombbut at the very least I would suggest stocking up on some key pieces. Velvet has been all over the catwalks as it is the perfect fashion trend for those colder months. Forget the 90s goth look and think bright, bold and beautiful - think stunning peacock blues and statement yellow, as in the sumptuous canary yellow Cédric Charlier dress.
Velvet is capturing the hearts of many a celebrity - Victoria Beckham and Rita Ora to name a few - and we need to be following their velvet lead. Velvet shouts luxury and opulence, and it is no longer just reserved for the gentlemen’s clubs. It’s now our turn. Our time to embrace it for all it’s worth and embrace it we should because it is the perfect feel good fabric. How could we not love velvet? It’s grown up, I like this new formal side to velvet - smart, sophisticated and full of sass, this is just what we need to bring a bit of velveteen sparkle to the dying embers of 2017.
I’m ready to find my new inner velvet va va voom. ■

Many fashion shows displayed a clear nod to the punk era. Whilst neon coloured mohawks may have been missing, leather cuffs, chains and piercings were all present.

Lu Bella Jewellery is handmade in Jersey using 925 Sterling Silver and complimented with Swarovski Crystals and coloured stones.
The stylish bracelets and necklaces are designed to be layered, enabling you to build your unique collection and form a bespoke, individual look to suit your own style.
The designer, Alex Macaione, has been creating jewellery for many years, up until recently this had just been a hobby alongside a successful career in the finance sector. Earlier this year though, Alex went into partnership with Steven Wilkinson, Managing Director of Shades of Time, and the company Lu Bella was created.
This has always been a dream for Alex who has had a strong lifelong passion for jewellery and fashion. The name Lu Bella represents Alex's children, Luca and
925 sterling silver.
Isabella, who both share Alex's passion and love and are becoming involved in the designing and creating of the beautiful pieces.
There are lots of new designs and charms to be introduced and many new items to add to the collection in the near future, this is the start of an exciting new journey for Lu Bella.
In July 2017, the collection was launched in Shades of Time at Voisins shortly followed by a launch into the Shades of Time at Beales in Bournemouth. Following a great response over the recent months it’s also planned to launch in Shades of Time at de Gruchy too. ■
The prices range from approximately £35 to £75 for the bracelets and approximately £90 to £180 for the necklaces, all currently available from Shades of Time at Voisins and www.shadesoftime.co.uk
Dark shades will always look trendy, but coloured furs will inject some fun into your day.
Waight Keller's last runway for Chloe included the statement Pixie bag with a round silhouette and calfskin finish. Other designers followed suit, keeping to the structured theme.
Oversized envelope clutches and hard cased boxy designs are great for everyday wear. Embellished designs will keep you looking fabulous after sundown though.
Soft grain leather with an easy drape makes this compact satchel remarkably light in weight and rich in texture. Corner details and workwear rivets add a downtown attitude to its well-organized, three-compartment silhouette.

Is Instagram a safe space for us to while away some minutes flicking through photos? Or, has Instagram become our new online space for self-loathing? ►
Words by Emma Critchley
Love it or loathe it, Instagram is undeniably popular and with over 700 million users it is a platform that is constantly evolving. It is also a platform that has come under fire recently with digital influencers up in arms over the everchanging algorithm, goal posts constantly being moved and hashtags becoming a minefield. To hashtag or not to hashtag?
Rumours abound of people repeatedly using the same hashtag and being shadow-banned as a result. But why this hysteria for what is just another social media platform driven by likes?
The likes are key. Narcissism? Maybe, but let’s face it no one wants to be the one getting no likes. It smacks of being the unpopular child at school, refused a seat at the popular lunch/Instagram table. Of course, deep down we want likes. We curate our content and those small squares offer snapshots into our life. We are putting ourselves out there, one square at a time, and in return we want just a little acknowledgment, a little love back.
I can’t speak for everyone but I can tell you my feelings on Instagram and how it makes me feel. Instagram is the one space in my life that I can control. My life is full-on unbridled chaos. That’s what happens when you have children, any sense of order goes out of the window. However, on Instagram I can create that perfectly ordered life that I so crave. I am in control and I choose what aspects of my life to show. I have in the past been accused of prettifying my life for Instagram. That’s not how I see it: Instagram is a shop window to my life. I want it looking its best, we don’t need to see the grubby handprints smearing the view.
So many of us curate our Instagram feed so that it is aesthetically pleasing and that is where the accusations of fake have come from. Yes, my Instagram feed might be pretty but look at the photos and read the captions and you will realise that my feed is reflective of me, someone who struggled with walking away from her career. My Instagram feed tells the story of someone who found it difficult to settle on Jersey, but then over time fell in love with the island. Instagram is essentially my love letter to Jersey.
So when you are pouring your heart and soul into those squares then of course you want some likes. We all want to be liked really, don’t we? We are always looking for
validation. My children love it when they have been told that they drew a good picture or that they read brilliantly. We never grow out of that need to do well, to receive praise. I work from home and I’m on my own for at least 5 hours a day. I miss the office banter and I miss being told that I am good at my job on a regular basis. My two bosses at 4 and 8 years-old aren’t very good at giving appraisals but if I were to look at the leftovers from last night’s dinner then it would probably suggest that I could do better. This is when Instagram becomes my lifeline. It’s my perfect space and yes those boxes at first glance might seem superficial but when my anxiety is going up a notch then Instagram is my go to safe space.
But is Instagram really my safe space or are those squares one step away from depression? If we look at it logically then Instagram is bonkers. We are sharing our lives and asking for validation from what are essentially strangers. I have nearly 2,000 followers. Not a huge amount granted but I still don’t know every single one of those followers, yet my self-esteem is tied up with how they respond to my photo. Or is it? No, because over time
I have realised that those likes really don’t mean anything. Those squares can never show the whole picture.
A couple of likes on a photo will never be better than a hug from my oldest child or an “I love you mummy” from my youngest. No amount of likes can replicate the validation that my family give me. Yes, they might not tell me that I am doing a good job but really they don’t need to. It is important that I remind myself of this - It is so easy to get swept along by Instagram. To find ourselves over analysing our squares. Why didn’t that get more likes? Did I not edit it properly? Was it the colours? Long gone are the days when Instagram was about being instant; perhaps if we went back to that we would all be a lot happier.
It’s time to break out of the Instagram box, we need to stop looking and judging life through a camera lens. We need to live in the now. No amount of likes on Instagram will replace “I love you” from your family. Sometimes we just need to stop instagramming and talk. Social media can unite us worldwide but if we aren’t careful then we could find ourselves one square away from #instapression ■
"Are those squares one step away from depression?"
When you lack confidence, everything becomes a struggle. But how do you get back on the path to truly believing in yourself when life has thrown you what seems to be insurmountable challenges? Pamela Pitcher did just that and is now a well-respected Confidence and Clarity Coach. She shares her story with Sarah Jane Holt ►
Iwas born in Canada to an air force family, a troubled family. I was deeply loved by my father but he died when I was six years old – the first scar upon my heart. I can still feel the intensity of how much he loved me and I him. I never really had that with my mother. She did love me but she utilised me as her rock to cope with being a single mother. She even called me her ‘little rock’.
I gave my mother more than she ever gave me emotionally. I often refer to my mom as a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde – loving me one minute and spewing out alcoholic rants of abuse the next. She was a broken woman in so many ways; my heart went out to her. I did my best to pick her up and try to make her happy. My efforts were always temporary; she died a sad woman.
I had three older brothers, one was a bully who terrified me growing up and hurt me deeply later in life; one a psychopath who betrayed the ultimate trust and raped me when I was sixteen and ruined a relationship I thought I could depend upon. The third loved me unconditionally. He gave me support and made me laugh like no other. He passed in a fire far too early when our family home burned down when I was nineteen, leaving me forever changed.
I was sad and confused. I lacked direction. I struggled with choices and made a lot of mistakes. I hurt people, including myself, with my poor choices. I desperately wanted to find happiness. I told myself I would have a better life. That one thought turned into a belief that became a conviction and changed the trajectory of my life from dysfunction to now one of celebration.
How did I get there? I began a long and highly successful financial career in Vancouver where I grew up. I eventually relocated to San Francisco to develop the California market
from scratch. Thereafter, having fallen in love with a Jerseyman, I moved to London so we could be in the same time zone. Two years in a long- distance relationship with an 8-hour time difference was exhausting! Having developed highly effective communication skills, with a passion for high end financial planning, I was a rock star in my industry smashing goals and winning all sorts of awards. I relocated to Jersey when I said, ‘I do’.
After years in what some may say was a dream career I decided to move on. During my transition, I underwent a transformative process of self-realisation and re-invention. I realised that I wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of others at a profound level. To motivate, inspire and propel others into a greater version of themselves. I couldn’t imagine giving a greater gift.
Through a process of discovery, I learned that confidence is in high demand, especially for women. When we lack confidence in ourselves, we operate from a place of fear and don’t live to our true potential. It took me years to become confidently content. My mission is to lessen that timeline for others.
Confidence starts when we are clear about our unique path and know how to enhance the quality of our thoughts. Are your thoughts full of uncertainty and confusion? If you don’t like what you’re thinking, you’re probably not enjoying life so much. The truth is, you can change what you think. And when you change what you think, magic happens.
With the point being to feel great about ourselves, I created ‘The Point’ methodology, bringing a powerful set of mind tools created by some of the most insightful intellects to help you the most. I know they work because these tools helped me faster and more effectively than talk therapy ever did when I was feeling lost or depressed. Don’t get me wrong. Talk therapy is good. For me, it only
worked up to a point.
When we talk about our problems we relive them in our mind’s eye again and again. Other than an emotional release, how is this serving you? I’m not here to talk about your problems with you. I’m here to show you how to detangle your thought-knots and live the life you want. ‘Thought-knots’ is my simplistic term for thoughts that make us feel bad.
Clarity of what’s important for us starts with the quality of our thoughts. If you’re not sure where you are going, how will you know when you’ve arrived? Negative patterns of thinking are often learned at an early age, often at times by our caregivers. The truth is, you can change what you think with The Point’s step-by-step process.
I believe everyone deserves to live a life full of the stuff they love. I help people to transform and discover or re-discover their mojo. Because I believe we deserve to lead fulfilling lives – lives of passion and fun!
Transformation takes time, tools and intention. Once you’ve transformed there is no going back. I provide the space and tools to change. All you need is to bring your intention and do the work. ■

"I DESPERATELY WANTED TO FIND HAPPINESS. I TOLD MYSELF I WOULD HAVE A BETTER LIFE. THAT ONE THOUGHT TURNED INTO A BELIEF THAT BECAME A CONVICTION AND CHANGED THE TRAJECTORY OF MY LIFE."
Millie Mackintosh starts our conversation by apologising for her croaky voice. She has just got back from showcasing her collection at London Fashion Week Festival (LFWF), a 4 day event open to the public following Fashion Week.
I am excited to talk to Millie about her collection because while a celebrity collection might be nothing new, the way Millie has worked on her fashion collection is far from the celebrity norm. We are inundated with celebrities who are only too happy to “lend” their name to the fashion houses but then have no actual input
into the design process. This was not the case for Millie, she launched her own label in 2014 and has remained very hands on. Millie prides herself on being involved in the entire process from start to finish. “I’ve worked with different brands before and what I’ve learnt along the way is that if you want to have full control of the designs and the end product, then owning the brand is the only way to achieve that. I’m a real perfectionist too so I wanted to be involved all the way through.” She openly says she “isn’t very good” at drawing but she does work with a really wonderful team including a brilliant designer who helps her get her ideas on to paper.
Whilst Millie’s brand may only be a few years old, her love for fashion is far from recent. She admits to making her own clothes on her sewing machine at the age of 15 and “creating dresses to sell to friends.” The mini dresses may have been very simple and made out of “old silk scarves” but it’s clear that the passion was always there. “I’ve always had a love of clothes, fashion and dressing up,” she says “that love of transformation, you become a different character depending on what you wear, our clothes are how we express ourselves.” We joke that it’s a great feeling to look in the mirror and say to yourself “Oh yes, I have it going on today!” ►
People remember Millie for her incredible style on Made In Chelsea, and although hard work and dedication have played a huge part in her success, Millie can’t help but thank the show for where she is now. She told me, “It was always in the back of my mind that I wanted to do something in fashion after the show, but it was a great platform, it helped me create a brand. It gave me a huge following on social media which has been a great tool, my brand wouldn’t be where it is now if I hadn’t had that, so I am so grateful that I did the show.”
Millie’s style has definitely evolved since those days and she explains how she has a more grown up approach to dressing now, “caring about the whole outfit.” A few years ago she would have never worn a suit, openly saying that she wasn’t “interested in tailoring” or didn’t look at an outfit as a whole. “Back then it might have been a really great mini dress and that was it,” she chuckles. Now she thinks about the look as a whole, “always including accessories”. She’s always been a girly girl though and loves feminine shapes, textures and fabrics like lace.
Millie might be a girly girl but her collections are not just for one type of person or one age group; they include pieces for everybody and their appeal is bound to be universal. The pre-fall collection was inspired by growing up in the countryside, “It’s like rebellious British femininity, I like to mix things up and play with textures” she explains, “I like putting delicate pieces with something a little bit tougher. A beautiful floral dress toughened up with a biker jacket or PVC leggings paired back with a jumper. I also think a military jacket looks great with a dress or with jeans. There are pieces in the collection that can be dressed up or down.”
The autumn/winter collection brings some great occasion wear as well as amazing tailoring options. This is a style that’s becoming a “bigger and bigger area” for Millie. “A lot of women are wanting to wear tailored pieces, not necessarily for work but actually for a night out. Not everyone wants to wear pink frills” she says.
Like most of us Millie likes to change her style depending on how she feels: “One day you might want to feel comfy and casual
and another day you might want to dress up and feel super powerful. I go through different phases. Sometimes I’ll wear a nice dress with a really masculine boot and other times I might want to feel very girly and wear everything in pink, it just depends on my mood.”
It was clear when speaking to Millie that she understands who her customers are and she welcomed the opportunity to interact with them at LFWF. Millie spoke highly about how amazing it was to see her customers “trying things on right in front (of me)” and loved being able to “see their reactions.” People have different tastes and not everybody wants to wear things the same way. “It was great to see what they like, how and where they wanted to wear certain pieces.”
Always looking for a new challenge, Millie’s love for fashion has also extended to beauty and skincare. Before Made In Chelsea,
Millie was a makeup artist and she’s recently launched her own beauty range in Boots. Just like her clothing line, she was involved in every process “from the name, to designing the packaging and coming up with the formulations”. The range is “basically a curated edit” of Millie’s essential products and includes a neutral shades eyeshadow palette, a brow kit, a cheek and lip pencil and a lipstick in Millie’s trademark “perfect pinky nude”, all encased in sleek metallic pink packaging.
The soft, muted tones of the range are very reflective of Millie, who is known for her signature glowy, natural makeup. What about when she feels like a change though? She does like to add a “red lip or a quick smoky eye” to her evening look and mix up her hair style from her natural waves for a night out: “I like a ponytail or a low bun, I quite like it with a few bits pulled out at the front so it’s a little bit messy but I also like the slicked back look. I think it depends what you’re wearing.”
Makeup aside, Millie puts her flawless skin down to “plenty of sleep and water.” Apart from facials every couple of months, she swears her daily routine is simple. “I literally use a face wash and a moisturiser and in the evening I’ll do a double cleanse and wear a different moisturiser. It’s very quick as I’m quite short on time in the morning, most of the time I’m in a hurry and want to spend more time in bed,” she says, laughing.
Millie is not only a firm believer of looking good on the outside, but also of feeling good on the inside. She often shares snaps of her exercise routines with her 1.3 million Instagram followers. “I work out 3 to 5 times a week, depending what I’ve got going on. I like to do different workouts that are generally a mixture of Pilates, yoga, spinning and TRX - all things that challenge your core.”
Millie says that yoga helps her stay feeling chilled, which helps balance her busy lifestyle. “It’s one of my favourite things to do, just spend an hour stretching. It’s very calming and is good if my muscles are a bit sore or tight. I always feel really good after yoga.”
However, it’s not just her workouts that keep her looking so well, as Millie says she follows a healthy, but not strict, diet. “I like to cook things that don’t take too long” she explains. “I eat protein with every meal, I have eggs for breakfast with some toast or avocado. Lunch would be a salad with chicken or fish and dinner might be something like stir fried vegetables with chopped up herbs or spices served with fish, chicken or steak - whatever I feel like! On the weekend I like to cook things like a casserole that you can leave for a couple of hours and it just gets better with time.”
And when it comes to dinner with friends, Millie has a favourite crowd pleasing dish. “I had a dinner party recently and I’d done a Nigella Lawson pork belly recipe, that’s a winner every time! It’s easy, it cooks for a couple of hours while you prepare all the other bits and a nice gravy. I like things that aren’t too complicated. I like following
However, there are times when Millie needs more than cooking and yoga to help her unwind from her busy schedule, for which she suggests a simple solution: “light some candles…. I love getting into a really good box set too, I’ve just started watching Ozark which is really good on Netflix. I love a nice relaxing bath, a pamper before bed.” Candles, pampering and Netflix? Millie is a girl after our own hearts.
Finally, when I ask Millie what the future holds, she wittily replies “global domination!”
“I’m just starting to design pre-fall 18,” she elaborates “I just want to keep expanding and growing the brand and keep on improving and making more people aware of the brand. I want to grow at a manageable pace, I think that’s important for a young business. I don’t want to expand too quickly as I want to keep the quality and control. I’m just very focused on the now. I don’t think fashion ever stops, it’s never as good as it gets, there’s always room to improve.”
It’s clear that with Millie’s warmth, knowledge and dedication, her future is set to soar in whatever she puts her mind to. ■

We attended the Designer Showrooms, a London Fashion Week event that is home to over 150 British and international designers, to speak to emerging talent from all over the world. There were three designers who stood out to us - Katie Ann Mcguigan, Julie Brøgger and Zeynap Dag.
Brøgger, a luxury women’s wear label, focuses solely on jackets and coats. The debut collection, inspired by 80s couture and street style, combines structured ruffle detailing with bold prints. Standout pieces include long quilted jackets in loud colours, with equally as bright lining. All samples are designed and made in London with fabrics being sourced from Italy and France.
Julie, who was born in Denmark, earned a Masters from RCAAD, Copenhagen before moving to London where she worked for some of fashion’s most acclaimed brands including Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. Julie Brøgger is her brand – fun, bright and full of life.
Katie Mcguigan, originally from Ireland, graduated from the University of Westminster in 2016, before gaining experience at McQ and Jonathan Saunders in London as well as at Marc Jacobs in New York. She was awarded the Fashion Scout Merit Award after her first print heavy collection debut, and continued on to win the Mittlemoda Absolute Prize in 2017. Katie’s SS18 collection is made up of bold digital prints, leathers and wools. All digital work is created and printed in Katie’s studio in London. The leather is sourced from North England and all wool is sourced and hand knitted in London.

Dare to bare? Fresh faced models hit the runway at PH5 and Custo Barcelona. Apply a primer or serum for a dewy glow.
Seen at the likes of Pamella Roland, Max Mara, Fendi and Vivienne Westwood, if you're all about low maintenance hair, this will be your go to style. Go to bed with two buns pinned to the nape of the neck. Wake up, shake out and spritz with finishing spray.
Probably the most disturbing trend yet. The latest Instagram craze, brought to you by @gret_chen_chen, involves stuffing false eyelashes up your nostrils. It's safe to say we won't be trying this. Ever.
Bare faces were sent strutting down the runway for the autumn winter shows. If you're not confident enough to go fresh faced, fake the barely there look with minimal makeup in natural tones.

The Laser Centre was established in 1997 and is a nurse-led laser and nonsurgical procedures clinic. Julie Naidu and Elizabeth Butler are both qualified nurses, laser nurse practitioners and members of the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses.
With a wealth of knowledge and years of experience, Julie and Liz are regularly updating and adapting new treatments and procedures. The latest top technology at The Laser Centre is the addition of the world’s most versatile tattoo removal laser – the Q Plus C Evo Laser from leading manufacturers Lynton Lasers is like nothing else in the laser marketplace, and is the only one in the Channel Islands. The extra speeds and larger ‘spot’ sizes mean that they can expect faster results, with increased tattoo colour breakdown after each treatment and considerably quicker healing time. Other popular treatments at The Laser Centre include laser hair removal, red vein and pigment/sun spot removal, and they will soon be introducing a skin tightening and scar improving laser.
With the introduction of other new and improved treatments like upgraded dermal fillers, wrinkles can be smoothed and the skin refreshed, maintaining a very natural look. Wrinkle-relaxing injections are also a hot favourite to stop frowning and soften smile lines around the eyes, and also can be life changing for those who feel they have a problem with underarm sweating.
Skin improvement with medical peels and the ‘A’-Listers firm favourite ‘Hydrafacial’ are fabulous ways to look and feel fresher. The Laser Centre also has a wide range of medically designed skin care products including their own signature range, TLC, which targets anti-ageing – containing ingredients twice as strong as those on the high street at very competitive prices.
Most treatments at The Laser Centre are preceded by a consultation with either Julie or Liz, where you can fully discuss your requirements and a patch test is performed where necessary. Call now on 888272.

There is no area that hasn’t been treated so ditch that razor and start laser by joining Laser @ MAC.
Are at home laser devices effective?
No, home hair removal devices are all standard battery operated and are not lasers. They use a thermicon wire that targets only the top part of the hair shaft.
What is the difference between laser and IPL (Intense pulsed light)?
IPL is not a laser, it is a source of pulsed light which is mainly used for cosmetic procedures such as photo rejuvenation. There is evidence that shows IPL has a decreased efficiency and does not result in long term, permanent hair removal. It is proven that laser will give you faster and better results long term.
Is it safe for my skin colour?
Yes! We can treat light and dark skin complexions safely and painlessly. We can treat suntanned skin also.
Do I have to refrain from sun exposure during treatments?
No, just ensure you are not sunburnt 24 hours prior to your treatment. We recommend not sun tanning for 24 hours post treatment but the remainder of the time you can soak up the sun.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatments depend on the person and the areas of the body. Hair colour and texture will also play a role in the number of treatments required, although most people need between 6 and 8. We offer single sessions and discounted treatment packages for all budgets.
Do I have to let hair grow out?
No, you can shave, trim or cream during your laser treatment, just no waxing or plucking.
For further information or to arrange a consultation and a free patch test, please contact Bridget Podger on 07781 154485 or send FB messages to Laser@ Medical Aesthetic Clinic Jersey.
Liana Shaw explains how colour, exercise and "you" time can all contribute to a happy, healthy winter. ►
Winter. Yes, we have cuddly jumpers, cosy fires and Christmas. That’s all lovely, but we also might go to work in the dark and come home in the dark, the skies flit between varying shades of grey and there’s that constant drizzle which somehow gets you soaked to the skin even if you have 5 layers on. Despite the wonderfulness of the season, it’s not always enough to keep the spirits up, even if you’re the most optimistic of people.
In the latter months of the year many of us can feel those nasty winter blues creep upon us. Long gone are the pleasant memories of summer BBQ’s, beach days and holiday fun. In a bid to keep happy and healthy just as much in the winter months, here are some key wellbeing ideas to keep those pesky, fed up feelings away.
It’s amazing how certain colours can impact our moods, emotions and overall psyche. Winter needn’t be about wearing or surrounding yourself with darker colours. Yes, black, navy, burgundy and grey are autumn/ winter colour palette staples, but research shows that adding even a pop of colour to a darker outfit can be a great way to lift the spirit. Hot pink lipstick? Brightly patterned scarf? Block colour handbag? Colour is not just for summer – add tights or leggings to colourful summer dresses and skirts to keep wearing them all year round. Don’t banish the pretty prints or pastels – make them work for you on the grey days too.
And I don’t mean drink mulled wine until February. Winter can bring with it a flurry of parties, special occasion balls, the office Xmas do, family get togethers etc. Sharing a few festive cheers is part and parcel of the season, but it’s also one of the sure-fire ways to make you feel more bleurgh in your body and in your mind. Find a way to keep hydrated in other ways and your body will be thanking you come spring. You could switch it up in the colder months with hot and refreshing herbal teas (apple and cinnamon tea is my ultimate winter warmer).
Keep yourself constantly watered and you’ll feel the winter sluggishness much less.
Yes, winter is here! No more ‘beach body’. Well, kind of. It’s sometimes a followed assumption as a society that we can ‘let ourselves go’ in winter and get fit again for summer. But really, what we put in our bodies can have a profound effect on us all year round. I love my winter comfort food; pies (savoury and of the mince variety) and stodgy puddings, large portions and piles of hot buttered crumpets. I love food. LOVE IT. But, I am slightly more mindful of what I eat in the winter, purely because I know how the food I love will make me feel if I have three months of overindulging. So, it also helps to experiment with a range of seasonal fruits and veggies and keep my plate looking fresh and colourful. I can still have the odd mince pie.
Come winter, exercise regimes can sometimes fall by the wayside and we can lose motivation, which means less exercise, so we lose more motivation and the vicious cycle goes on. The colder months are also easier to make excuses as it’s ‘too cold’ or ‘too wet’ and we feel like hibernating under the warmth of a blanket on the sofa. But ask any doctor, fitness instructor of mental health practitioner – keeping active is probably one of the best ways to keep your mood up and your body ticking over happily no matter what time of the year. In the winter, you could swap your sea swim for the pool, find
an indoor fitness class you enjoy, turn the house into a gym (yoga mat and HIIT video, plus stairs - Instant energy boost). Make a bit of time for some daily movement to make a huge difference to your mood.
The power of feeling fresh-skinned can work wonders for your general mood in winter. Who doesn’t want to keep the dewy freshness and glowing skin of the spring/ summer months? And it’s not impossible. Check out the products on page 111 for great ideas on current skincare miracles. You might need to change up your skincare routine with products designed for the winter months as your skin will feel the effects of the season. Central heating and fan heaters can parch your skin, harsh weather can flare up skin conditions and the general lack of sunshine and vitamin D can leave skin feeling sallow and tired. Keep in mind SPF should be worn all year round to protect from UV rays, but you can get a vitamin D hit through using an enhanced moisturiser.
One of the worst things that can happen in winter is the loss of ‘looking after ourselves’. The general wear and tear of the season can take its toll, days and days of gloomy skies can drive up cortisol (the stress hormone), and sometimes, personal wellbeing can slip through our very busy fingers. Keep in mind those little luxuries that help pep you up. Think what works for you: a long bubble bath with your favourite scented candle, a mindful colouring session, your favourite movie or a catch up with a friend. Schedule a bit of ‘you’ time. Pamper yourself a bit, do something you really enjoy and hopefully fuel that feelgood winter attitude. ■
"It’s sometimes a followed assumption as a society that we can ‘let ourselves go’ in winter and get fit again for summer."
This moisturiser was perfect for everyday use, especially since it contains SPF, and is very versatile. In a busy day and age, where pollution and environmental factors can be damaging, Clarins is using a key ingredient ‘callicarpa japonica’ to help revive skin. Light in texture and in scent, it made my skin feel very soft. I did need to top up later in the day but it's still a lovely product.
This rich formula (there are also light and gel options) is ideal for dry skin. It sinks in well and because of the hydrastructure technology, which sources its key ingredients from nature, it felt luxurious without feeling sticky or overwhelming.
This water-infused day cream is part of a new range by Lancôme. Formulated with cranberry, ginseng, lemon balm and vitamin E, the day cream is very light and leaves skin with a dewy look and feel. It is fast acting to help energise your skin, perfect for dull winter days. Not overly perfumed, this felt like a great moisturiser to be part of an everyday routine.
In the winter months I have one big problem when it comes to my skin - the weather sucks the life and moisture out of my complexion and leaves my face feeling dry, tired and dull. Switching up my moisturiser can make a massive difference.
I’ve been busy investigating some of the most versatile and innovative moisturisers on the market, to help save winter skin.
These two wonder products really bring out the best in each other. I was wary about using oil on my face as I thought it could be clogging, however, I felt my skin looked even more glowy when I used a little of the rose oil with the crème, although the crème would stand on its own as a daily moisturiser too. The oil was fast absorbing and non-greasy. whilst the moisturiser felt hydrating and brightening. And the subtle rose scent - amazing.
I loved this product. Maybe not for everyone, as it’s heavily perfumed, but wow, what a smell. I felt refreshed just from the scent. Enriched with vitamins for the ultimate plumped up skin, it is ideal to use as a daily base before makeup. A beauty shelf staple.
Containing the renowned Caviar Absolute concentrate, this cream from the indulgent Swiss brand was lighter than I'd thought it would be. It comes with a hefty price-tag, but this really did feel like a treat for my skin. It sunk into my skin like a dream and I felt my face was soft and moisturised all day. My skin even looked different – more luscious. Long term, this moisturiser promises to restore tone and density for enhanced skin fullness.

We spent a week in New York City, visiting the sights, vetting the top restaurants and enjoying a cocktail or two.
By far the most exciting city in the world, New York will appeal to almost everybody. With more restaurants, bars, museums, shops and iconic sights than any other city, you could visit every year and still find something new to do every time. You can visit at any time of the year and
experience a different city; winter is magical, with thick snow followed by cloudless skies whilst the summer is guaranteed sunshine. Spring and autumn are the best though, with clear blue skies and a crispness to the air. We’ve put together an easy and practical guide for you to maximise your time in the Big Apple. ►
You'll need to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at least 3 days before you leave for the United States, although we recommend applying as soon as you’ve booked your holiday to avoid any issues. At $14 (approx. £10) per application the costs can add up quickly for a large family, however, ESTA’s are valid for 2 years or until your passport expires.
You can use the subway to get to Manhattan but it does mean travelling with suitcases and having to make a couple of changes along the way, to save the hassle, get a cab. Cabs from JFK to Manhattan are a flat rate of $60 which includes tolls and tax. Only use the yellow cabs and don’t be tempted by other drivers waiting there as these are private car services and will charge you up to three times as much.
The Omni Berkshire, located on 52nd Street between Madison and 5th Avenue, has world-class attractions right on the doorstep, including Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall and the lively theatre district. Designed to provide guests with a residential townhouse feel, accommodations at Omni Berkshire Place are spacious and traditionally stylized to maximize comfort. The hotel has 44 suites available to guests including the landmark Rodgers & Hammerstein suite, where the two Broadway giants collaborated on their first masterpiece “Oklahoma!” in 1942. The 1,000 square feet of living space of the Rodgers & Hammerstein suite is complemented by a walk-out, wrap-around terrace.
The hotel boasts 8 uniquely different
terrace rooms and suites, all located on the 14th floor and above with city views that can include St Patrick's Cathedral, 5th Avenue or Madison Avenue. In addition to the private guestroom terraces, the spacious St. Patrick's Terrace, located on the 17th floor, is the perfect respite for guests looking for a private oasis in the city. Order room service to the terrace and enjoy a morning coffee or a bottle of wine whilst taking in the views of St Patrick’s cathedral.
Getting around is surprisingly easy. To really see the city, put on a comfortable pair of shoes and walk. Most of the city is mapped out on a grid system so you should be able to navigate your way around without too much confusion. If walking isn’t your thing, the subway system is efficient and easy to use or you could hail a yellow cab from the side of the street – just like the movies!
The hop-on hop-off bus tours are a great way to get a taste of the Big Apple and cover most sites in the least amount of time. For an alternative travel experience, the water taxi offers sightseeing, charter and commuter services to points along the East River and Hudson River. ►
There are literally thousands and thousands of restaurants featuring cuisines from every corner of the globe in NYC, so whether you’re after a cosy dinner for two in a romantic setting, a classic steak or even a plate full of Chinese dumplings, you’ll definitely find somewhere to suit your taste.
You can spend as little as $1 for a slice of pizza or a hotdog from a street food cart, right up to $350 for a tasting menu in one of the latest trendsetting restaurants. There aren’t many options for dietary requirements when it comes to street food, however, almost every restaurant can accommodate with some offering an entirely separate menu to suit your needs. Do your research before you go and book well in advance as a lot of restaurants, especially in touristy areas, are fully booked with queues trailing down the street. We use Open Table when visiting New York –it allows you to read reviews from diners, make online reservations and earn points towards a free meal.
R: View from the Central Park boating lake
Below: The Met
If there's one city where you won't be stuck looking for things to do, it's New York. After all, there are countless museums, landmarks, shopping districts and foodie havens all waiting to be discovered.
Tourists tend to head to New York and try to cover as many attractions as possible rushing between Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central etc. However, if you truly want to see New York you need to slow the pace right down.
Comprising of 843 acres, Central Park has to be one of the greatest parks in the world. Take your time to explore the many attractions, including the reservoir, baseball pitches, numerous gardens and the famous Wollman ice skating rink. We love the lake in front of the Loeb Boathouse, rent a boat for just $15 dollars and row your way around Central Park.
Towering high above the New York skyline, the 102-story skyscraper continues to be a firm favourite amongst tourists. Whilst the observatories may offer spectacular views of the city, it can take up to one hour of queuing to make your way up, so we’d only recommend doing so if it’s high on your list of things to do. Tip: It’s best between Thursday and Saturday evenings from 9pm till 12am where a saxophonist sets the mood.
A tribute of remembrance to the people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum features two twin reflecting pools, where the world trade centre once stood alongside a museum telling the story of 9/11.
Take a stroll along the 1.45 mile elevated park and enjoy views of the Lower West Side. Get off at 16th and head to Chelsea Market, a hotspot for foodies. The block long food hall has more than 35 vendors selling everything from cheese, wine, coffee and nuts to soups, sandwiches and hot meals.
The Beaux Arts building, marked by two marble lions, is one of the most beautiful buildings in New York whilst also being the fourth largest library in the world. There are free tours available which tell you about the architecture, the donors, the history, the artwork and the collections. There are also exhibitions and events held at the library throughout the year so it’s worth checking if there’s anything on before you go.
Throughout the year Bryant Park plays host to various events, workshops, classes and games but in the winter months it’s transformed into “The Winter Village” where you can wander around the holiday shops, boutiques and artisanal food stalls. The Winter Village also has the only free admission ice skating rink in New York, although rental charges do apply. For a truly magical experience, head down at night time and skate under the stars.
You will find some of the world’s top museums in New York, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney and the Brooklyn Museum, but our favourite is The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met is home to some of the most astounding paintings from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet. If you buy tickets at the museum you pay what you want, however, if you want to buy them online to avoid admission queues you will pay the suggested $25. ►
Those looking for luxury should head to the famous Madison Avenue, lined with the world’s most extravagant boutiques, including Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Dolce and Gabbana and Prada. You will also find some of the city’s most renowned department stores in the Upper East Side; Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys and Bloomingdale’s.
With views over the park, this mall is 2 blocks long and four stories high. You can expect to find retailers such as Coach, Eileen Fisher, Ted Baker, Sephora and Michael Kors to name just a few.
Although the East Village has been refurbished, it has kept its grungy, bohemian aesthetic. With many vintage boutiques and gift stores comprising jewellery and pottery by local artists, it’s clear to see why this neighbourhood is defined as young and hip.
By Far the most chic, the West Village is home to many high end flagships as well as quirky, independent boutiques making it a sort of mini Madison Avenue, with a cooler downtown feel.
SoHo
SoHo offers fashionistas an ECLECTIC mix of hip and classic, inexpensive and luxurious boutiques from locally made garments right up to the biggest names in fashion. With the elegant castiron architecture and cobbled streets, the neighbourhood offers a cool and sophisticated ambiance.
You’ll find everything from books, records and antiques to clothes, shoes and jewellery. 4-days-a-week Greenmarket, the biggest farmers’ market in the city, offers fresh produce from farmers, fishers and bakers. In November and December, the Square also partly turns into a huge popup shop with the ‘Holiday Market’ brimming with handcrafted art, jewellery, gifts, clothes and trinkets etc.
See a Show Musicals, comedies, plays, whatever you’re interested in, New York is offering it. Get tickets in advance for the most popular shows or get same-day tickets at the TKTS Discount Booth in Times Square.
Visit a Jazz Club
New York City is a Jazz Mecca. We loved Birdland - originally opened in 1949, the club was hugely popular with celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland. Sadly the club shut its doors in 1965 due to a decline in sales, thanks to the newly popular Rock & Roll. Birdland’s was reborn on the corner of 105th street in 1989 where it thrived for 10 successful years before moving back to midtown where it has continued to play host to some of the most famous names on the jazz scene including Michael Brecker, Diana Krall and our favourite, Ron Carter and his big band.
Whether you’re into luxury labels, department stores or cool indie boutiques, New York has it covered. Bargain hunters should head to Century 21, a 7 storey discount department store. If you’re looking for something avantgarde make your way to Dover Street Market, but if it’s extravagant brands you’re after, then the famous Madison Avenue would fit the bill.
However you’re planning on doing New York, our best advice would be to get a New York pass. With over 90 attractions to choose from, the New York Pass makes sightseeing easy. The pass allows you free entry to all top iconic places as well as many unique tours. The pass also covers the water taxi and the hop-on hop-off buses. Choose the length of time you need your card for, pay and visit as many attractions as you like - remember, the more places you visit, the more you save! ■

Interiors are finally moving away from all white and grey. Instead, people are embracing warm nature inspired hues. Deep greens combined with rich natural wood and accented with brass makes this cosy colour the perfect fit.
What is more luxurious than velvet? When matched with rough natural textures it adds visual appeal and tactile warmth to a room. Choose from colours that are warm and welcoming such as burnt oranges, deep claret or soft browns.
We're seeing a concentrated move towards natural materials, and especially the finishes that it gives. This trend is all about natural elements being used together.
Had enough of rose gold, marble and all white interiors? As we say goodbye to last season’s biggest interior trends, it is time to take note of this season’s most wanted. There are some exciting trends to consider this winter with some inspired by the latest looks on the catwalk. The catwalk may seem a world away from the curtains you choose for your bedroom, but fashion and home trends go hand in hand, with designers inspired by the same fabrics, colours and details, this season is set to be full of deeper and darker shades for both walls and accessories, along with raw naturals and bold accents.
Rose gold has certainly reigned the market as everyone's metal of choice, however brass is set to dominate this winter. Combined with natural and clean materials it creates a cool, industrial aesthetic.

If you are wanting to opt for a lighter colour then blush could be the one for you. It's mood-enhancing, goes with everything, and will work in any room. From kitchenware to throws, cushions and plant pots – everything looks great in blush.
Wallpaper adds personality, colour and texture to a room and now floral wallpaper is back! Not the small, dainty designs but big, bold and beautiful prints in delicate tones will add a romantic element to any room.
Heads up! Accented ceilings are the new feature wall, decorated in dark paint or patterned wallpaper combined with statement lighting which plays a pivotal role in interior finishes, home owners are finally giving appreciation to the commonly over looked "fifth wall".
Having an interior design that is solely black and white has been around for a very long time, however, it's ranked as one of the top trends that will never go out of style. The bottom line is no matter how the trends of colours fluctuate with time, black and white will always remain a classical combination.
Strip off those plain white sheets and try something more exciting this season. We spend about onethird of our life in bed, so why not have interesting bedding? It's time to bring in the bold, flamboyant patterns.

It was forty years ago that David Hick Interiors started life as David Hick Antiques. Sarah Jane Holt met David to uncover his path from leading the field in antiques, to being one of the most prestigious businesses dealing in quality interiors.
So, you no longer deal in antiques?
We still have a fair few antiques but it’s no longer the main part of our business. After about 15 years trading here we started to add another angle which was bespoke handmade quality furniture, in the old style.
We then built an extension to cater for that, specialising in dining tables and chairs, desks and other things that were sought after, yet hard to buy, as antiques. That part of our business grew quite strongly for a few years whilst we were also dealing with beautiful period pieces. More recently I have designed my own sofa range to cater for our client’s bespoke needs.
When did you rename to David Hick Interiors?
It was early 2000 we changed our name to David Hick Interiors. A natural evolution took place, the business was growing towards ‘the look’, the interiors look. Not just furniture but also soft furnishings, accessories, curtains and interior design.
The building plans to further extend Alexandra House had been approved previously. The actual building work went ahead in 2005 and took two years to reach completion.
The front of Alexandra House we retained as the original Victorian shop. The conversion encompassed the old bakehouse and the vegetable garden with the completed project spanning 12,000 square feet over three galleried floors. The main entrance became the rear of the property in the shadow of the old Methodist chapel. The frontage with its stained-glass work and curved entrance
was designed to look like a church hall to offer an impressive introduction to the showrooms.
Kitchens are a major part of what we do, along with bathrooms, bedrooms and general home interiors, in fact everything you could want for your home. Our collections include significant contemporary ranges in addition to retaining traditional looks. ►
"You’ve got to have that goal ahead of you. You’ve got to have ambition, you’ve got to always be looking forward."
Why did you move the focus to interiors?
20 years ago, antiques became much harder to source. When you did locate them, they were that much harder to sell as the market was changing. Previously once you’d located an exquisite period piece it would be no problem finding a buyer, in fact we had a waiting list. Once the change started to take place, and buyers were becoming as scarce as the antiques themselves, I made the decision to change direction.
What did you do before becoming involved with antiques?
It was always antiques. I was just sixteen when I started training in antiques and furniture restoration in Hertfordshire. You could say it was in my blood. I loved the finer things in life and fully immersed myself in what was to become my passion for helping others who appreciate the finest and the best.
I was brought up in Jersey and returned in 1977 to open up my first antiques shop in Union Street, where Hospice Care shop is now. Then three years later I moved to Burrard Street.
Did you restore antiques as well at that time?
We had warehouses in St Lawrence where we would carry out restorations and at one point there were seven cabinet makers preparing furniture for export. The export of larger items to the overseas market was a very large part of our business for the first ten years, then when we relocated here to Alexandra House, the focus moved to retail.
We also retained a presence in town in Halkett Place, where Laura Ashley is now. Laura Ashley became part of the business about seven years ago –another angle which fitted in extremely nicely with where we were headed.
Who would you say was the typical David Hick Interiors client?
Our client base is quite mixed but all have the same love of quality that we do – we have a very good relationship with people who understand quality.
First impressions count, and there are people who say they’ve never been here –
that will always happen in any business –however those who pop in to browse are blown away by what we have to offer and many have become lifelong customers.
Someone may just call in to find the perfect mirror or a bespoke sofa, whereas others want to discuss a major redesign, and we cater for all. Our team handles design projects of all sizes but all with the same care and attention to detail.
We encourage people to browse and wander in a non-pressurised environment, to really get a feeling from their surroundings on how well a look could fit with their lifestyle. Often clients don’t have a clear idea of what they’re after. Or how they could possibly change a look they’ve had in their home for years. Many say it’s our showroom displays that help the process and inspire ideas.
A major part of what we do is work with the client, not dictate to them. We have the products to show them – they don’t have to choose from a catalogue and then find it doesn’t ‘sit’ right in their home.
Plus of course there’s the element of trust. We will give as little or as much help as they want and they trust us to deliver it. Our work with the client is important, they have to have input into the final creation of their project.
By having a finger on the pulse of the interior design market we keep ahead of trends rather than having to change to accommodate them. We pride ourselves in leading the way in trends, which at the moment is all about contemporary.
Contemporary is huge. Many would think it’s due to the move towards a discerning younger client base. However, clients I have dealt with for years who I have handled major design projects for in the past – we’re talking large, multiroomed properties with land – are now downsizing and buying contemporary apartments. They are travelling more, the family have moved on and they maybe want a smaller space, a property with less maintenance. So, contemporary is not just about the younger market, it’s not an ageist thing.
On the flip side, there are also younger customers who prefer the traditional look. Basically, we cater for all tastes. It’s just
about finding out what the client wants and working with them to deliver.
Looking back, did you make the right decision to move away from solely antiques?
I don’t miss antiques as they are not easy to sell anymore. I get a buzz now from doing something quite different. After 30 odd years focussing on antiques it was quite refreshing to do something entirely different.
I just employed exactly the same criteria I used for selling antiques and put it across to everything else. It’s the same formula and just meant transferring my skill sets across from quality period pieces to high end products both contemporary and traditional.
Is it now time to sit back and take it easy?
40 years on I’m still enjoying it. Yet there are other things we’re looking at, there are ideas out there – I can’t share now, but all in good time. You’ve got to have that goal ahead of you. You’ve got to have ambition, you’ve got to always be looking forward.
How would you sum up your 40 years?
I would describe the time as fulfilling. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed building the business. In the first 20 to thirty years I met some great people in the antiques business, and extremely appreciative clients who loved the things we used to source – sourcing nice things for nice people; very fulfilling.
The fun has always been, and still is, selling nice things to nice people and being appreciated by people who understand the difference. ■
