Buddy Club Newsletter- April

APRIL EDITION

WELCOME TO THE BUDDY CLUB

This program is designed to meet the needs of individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities. Join us for arts, crafts, fitness, movies, computers & video games. Access our Wellness Center, enjoy our pool or take a walk in the park! We meet every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-2:30pm.

Only $2 Drop in fee required or just $20 per month.

BUDDY NEWS WE HAVE NEW BUDDIES! Cathy and Tracey are new to the club. Welcome!

Save the date! Plans are being made to hold the first annual Buddy Open House on Saturday June 9th from 11am to 1pm. Any help/ideas will be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU’S! We want to thank Home Depot, PaPa John's (Commerce Court) and Blooms (Centreville Rd.) for their generous donations to the Buddy Club. Home Depot gave us $75 which was used to purchase supplies to finish our bird feeders. PaPa John's donated 3 pizzas and Blooms gave us a $25 dollar gift card that we used to purchase the cakes, drinks, and chips for our St. Patrick's Day Birthday Celebration. FYI Blooms has the best chocolate and carrot cake ever!

MORE BUDDY NEWS Past Activities The nursing students arranged to have the Fire Department and Rescue Squad visit with us. Everyone had a great time, learned about fire safety, first aid and even got to sit the fire engine! One of the firemen even put on all his gear and talked to everyone--he sounded real weird.

Future Activities The Buddies are going to be making items to sale at the Community Craft Fair which will be held here at the center in the fall.

Buddy Transportation Paulita Williams (703-398-6197) has agreed to transport Buddies for $13.50/day. Her regular fee is $40/day.

Michela is 26 years old. Her birthday is June 9th so she will soon be 27 years old. She is the oldest of four sisters. She also has a little dog named Suzy Q who is almost 15 years old. Her father is a special education teacher and her mother is a registered nurse who works at an elementary school.

Michela graduated from Osbourn High School in the City of Manassas. She had classes there with other students who remain her friends today. She has also made friends through her activities with the Special Olympics and ARC. Michela enjoys participating in Special Olympics bowling which she has done for many years. On occasion, she has been able to go to the state games in Richmond. Michela also enjoys performing in plays with Take One Drama, getting exercise with Life Fit, and going to the dances and proms arranged by ARC. On Sundays, Michela helps with the children in the Primary organization of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints. During the weekdays she enjoys the Buddy Program at the Manassas Park Community Center where she happily spends time with her friends exercising, swimming (she loves the pool), and socializing. She also enjoys many respite care activities.

She and her family are thankful for her attendants, the organization of ARC, Special Olympics, Manassas Park Community Center and all of the volunteers who help with these organizations.
