The legacy of the Bryce Sisters On Saturday November 14th the Maleny Historical Society held an open day at their Museum. The weather was almost perfect and that brought out the crowds not only for a “day in the sun” but, to learn a little about Maleny’s history.

The existence of the Maleny Historical Museum owes a great deal to the very generous gesture of the Bryce sisters, Isabella and

Phyllis who donated the land following their death to the United Church on the understanding that some land would be put aside for the museum.

The home was originally on the Bryce farm on the site of the now Erowal retirement units & nursing home.

The Maleny Pioneer Cottage, built in 1906 by Charles Bryce, was the family home of Ben & Priscilla Bryce and their family, Isabella, Phyllis & Marjorie.

The Maleny Historical Society precinct houses a number of organisations, Maleny Men’s Shed Group, Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club along with the Maleny Ukulele Club.

The Men’s Shed had cow bells that were made in the onsite Blacksmith Shop for sale.

These bells are individually numbered so they will become collectors items Even the original Maleny Police Lockup is now installed at the Museum, just in case of any pugnacious behaviour onsite during open days. The play to be read is ‘It Runs in the Family’ by Ray Cooney. Set in a hospital, the script contains the usual assortment of farcical nuts running in and out of doors mistaking everybody for someone else, as Dr. Mortimore tries to fend off a paternity suit, an ex-wife, a punkish daughter and various other lunatics so that he may, at last, deliver the Ponsonby Lecture in an international conference.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Council Major Grants Funding announced

Council injects $823k in major grants to Coast economy

A wide range of organisations will share in $823,200 including the Conondale Public Hall Committee Inc. Conondale Public Hall Committee Inc treasurer Lois White said their $9374 Major Grant would help restump the hall and restore its windows.

“The hall is nearly 90 years old. It doesn’t take much to run it but we’d love to get it back into full use where it’s the heart of the community,” Ms White said.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston

Due to their distinctive new foliage and flowers, spring is the perfect time to highlight the spread of invasive weeds all over the Hinterland of the Sunshine Coast.

Maleny local, Jeanette Nobes, has been a tireless worker and advocate for the control and eradication of invasive weeds.

Regrettably Council and Main Roads have not listened to her expert advice and consequently, we find ourselves in this current invasive weed mess. Also regrettably, many new and even long term residents think that invasive weed trees like camphor laurel, narrow/broad leaf privets and Chinese celtis (elm) are lovely trees. Nothing could be further from the truth.

They are not called invasive weeds because they are good for our environment, they are called that because they rapidly destroy our environment, scenic views, valuable prime agricultural land, waterways and some species also pose a serious annual health risk to sufferers of hay fever and asthma.

In addition, other smaller invasive weeds are spreading exponentially in the Hinterland.

Those weeds include, morning glory, giant rats tail, mist weed, giant devils fig, groundsel, Japanese sunflower, madeira

vine, cats claw creeper, red lantana and numerous others.

Whilst some of these invasive weeds may seem attractive or pretty flowering shrubs, those who understand the nature of these plants, detest them because of the damage they do to our natural environment as well as the annual cost of control to both farmers and the community in general.

To fully understand why they are a problem, consider this old factual adage regarding weeds, “One years seed is seven years weeds”.

This is because their seed can lay dormant in the ground for up to seven years before germination.

Many environmentally minded people talk about sustainability, when discussing our natural environment. I strongly support sustainability but ask, “What is sustainable about pouring chemicals upon our land, year after year, in an endeavour to control the spread of invasive weeds?”

generations, is to eliminate the host plants and through persistence and hard work, pull out the newly germinated plants before they flower to repeat the cycle of another seven years of germination and continual hard work.

Since elected to Council in April, I have endeavoured to educate other Councillors and Bio-security Staff, in an endeavour to lift the profile of invasive weeds and obtain increased focus and spending on weed control.

However unless property owners, our State Government and all dedicated environmental community members understand the magnitude of the problem and work with Council to control and eliminate all invasive weeds, then we are doomed to failure and the Hinterland will rapidly become a weed infested wasteland, lacking in agricultural production, visual amenity and habitat for much of our native flora and fauna.

This is a call to arms for all residents to support my efforts to get all levels of Government to act before it is too late.

You can assist by demanding that our Council and State Government act now by allocating sufficient funding to control this urgent environmental and economic issue.

With the State of Origin football over the next couple of weeks on television these terrific little meat pies will be great for munching on.

They are often referred to as Australia's national food and during sporting event are great little behaviour watchers as eating them soothes the mind.

Cool pies well before serving, as filling will be very hot. Eat by hand or with knife and fork, as desired, depending on how refined your behaviour is.

Recipes from Jeremi Australian Meat Pies Step 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Grease a 12-cup muffi n tin.

Step 2 Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef and onion in the hot skillet until meat is browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. (Drain and discard grease.) Add 3/4 cup water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, bouillon cubes, oregano, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until combined, about 10 minutes.

Step 3 Mix 1/4 cup cold water and cornstarch together in a bowl to form a paste; stir into meat mixture. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes more. Remove from heat.

Step 4 Use a 4-inch biscuit cutter to cut the pie crusts into 12 circles. Line each muffi n cup with a circle, pressing into the bottom and sides. Fill each with the meat mixture. Use a 3-inch biscuit cutter to cut puff pastry dough into 12 circles.

Top each fi lled muffi n cup with with a circle and seal edges together. Brush pastry tops with beaten egg.

Step 5 Bake in the preheated oven until crusts are brown and fl aky, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool in pan before removing pies, about 10 minutes.

Maleny SES Volunteer group Maleny SES Deployment Maleny SES members have joined other groups from around the Sunshine Coast, NSW & SA helping out in the Ipswich area after the big hail storm on November 5th.

As a result of this storm about 3000 requests for assistance have been received from the Ipswich and Logan areas.

To see the amount of Damage first hand that this storm has done is an eye opener.

As part of your emergency plan, think about what you will do and what your options may be to get help if you need it. Include a battery powered radio in your emergency kit and ensure that you keep your mobile phone fully charged.

Listen to local ABC Radio will assist you to keep up to date with emergency message.

Massive damage was caused by giant hail stones to most roofs in the area.

It’s going to be a long road to recovery for those communities.

Police News Neighbourhood Watch Scammers

Police are aware of a scam in which the caller poses as a Neighbourhood Watch Queensland (NHWQ) member or representative and is selling advertising within a NHWQ journal or magazine.

Please be advised that NHWQ DOES NOT sell advertising space associated with ANY resources.

Whenever receiving a request for investment/ payment, don’t commit to anything during the call.

Police encourage you to be vigilant with your research. If the caller has your interest and you are keen to participate, ask questions including, callers name, contact phone number, business name, the purpose of the magazine/journal and alternative payment methods. Then do your own research and make you own inquiries including making contact with the business the caller is purporting to represent, to verify the legitimacy of the request.

It is important to remember that you can never be too careful when it comes to handing out your information or money.

So far this year Scamwatch has received over 18,000 reports of these scams, an increase of 40 per cent compared to reports across all of 2019.

People aged 24 and under reported losing more than $4.1 million to threat based scams and women reported losses three times higher than men and it is believed that scams are generally under-reported in Australia.

As a result of those scams Australians have lost

over $8.8 million to threat based scams, and young people are reporting the highest losses. It is important to remember that Australian Government departments, Federal, State or Local will never send pre-recorded messages to your phone or threaten you with immediate arrest for outstanding debts to them.

COMBINED PROBUS CLUB OF MALENY Inc. After the easing of some of the Covid restrictions Probus will recommence their monthly meetings on Nov 25, the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Probus was formed to meet the need for companionship of their peers and mental stimulation for retired business and professional men and women.

The Club's vision is to promote and foster Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. Although the Probus Organisation was originally founded for retired PROfessional and BUSiness people the organisation welcomes retired members from all walks of life.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts

Border Opening - Covid Just a quick thought - just how quickly the Queensland borders were opened once the state election was over. It was also amazing just how quickly Covid -19 disappeared when it came to selling tickets for the third State of Origin football in Brisbane on November 18th. They are expecting over50,000.

Who says these decisions are not made for political reasons - but based on medical decisions alone!

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” that he was flying from Brisbane to Perth to visit his son and daughter-in-law.

Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Adelaide along the way because of bad weather. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft and stretch their legs. The plane would re-board in about 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind. One man did noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.

He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, “Kathy, we are in Adelaide for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?”

The blind lady replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a See-ing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sun-glasses.

People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre needs volunteers!

Volunteers are Urgently Needed at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. There are a number of roles that need mose help.

Kitchen Help

The Centre can always use help in their kitchen, no experience is necessary and only a smile is required! There is preparation to be done the day before the Thursday Community Lunch and assistance in serving on the day Garden Help The upkeep of the community garden includes weeding, watering, planting & pruning. Any help big or small, would be very much appreciated as the garden’s produce supplies the Thursday community lunch.

Front Desk The wonderful front desk volunteers are there to greet everyone who comes through our front door. If you enjoy meeting people or answering the phone this may be exactly for you. Minimal computer skills would be a bonus but not essential.

Once endorsed, the Sunshine Coast Heritage Plan will inform the development of the annual Heritage Levy Program, funded by the Heritage Levy.

As an incentive at this busy time of year, early birds who complete the survey will receive tickets to a drive in Christmas movie at Maleny.

Last week some of the Maleny State High School Year 10 and 11 students were completing their Roadcraft Driver Education program, learning and practising the skills of responsible driving.

Witta - A Short History Once called Teutoburg it had a name change during World War 1

so as not to sound too German!

Situated some 8kms north west of Maleny, the area known as Witta, once called Teutoburg, was first settled by German immigrants in 1887 and has a wonderful history of early settlement, dedicated hard work and strong family values.

'Maleny' was transferred to the settlement on the Obi Obi Creek.

The town was declared as called Witta on 18 May 1916, and recorded in the Queensland Government Gazette on 20 May 1916. The reason for the town’s name change was not spelt out in the Government Gazette but during the years of the First World War anti-German sentiments were being expressed and people and places with Germanic sounding names came under close scrutiny by members of the public and by some government officials.

These early settlers are believed to have come from the Teutoburgh forest region of Munster, in northern Germany.

They came bringing their farming heritage and set about clearing the land to create outstanding dairy and crop growing country, which it remains to this day. The area was noted for its crops, cheese and wine, as well as the timber industry.

The Witta Sawmill, owned by the Tesch family and established in the 1910s, was a major business in Witta, eventually expanding to Caloundra and Landsborough.

A town reserve was surveyed there in 1888 and, interestingly, it was first called 'Maleny', but the local residents lobbied for the name to be changed to Teutoburg.

To extinguish any doubts about their loyalty the people of Teutoberg petitioned for a name change for the area, and the area was renamed Witta which is

believed to be a corruption of the word “Weyta” meaning dingo or wild dog in the Kabi Kabi language.

A school was opened in 1892, first called the Teutoberg Provisional School and becoming the Teutoberg State School in 1909.

The school closed in 1974 but still plays a key role as a community centre with shady areas, picnic tables and toilets. A School of Arts was opened in 1908 by Harry Walker, M.L.A. All About Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club

Vale Kevin Howell

Members of the Maleny Cultural & Historic Society from the Maleny Pioneer Village wish to acknowledge and pay a mark of respect to their President, Kevin Howell, who passed away in the early hours of November 6th at the Maleny Hospital.

Kevin had been undergoing cancer treatment for some time, but his condition deteriorated quickly and his passing was peaceful & comfortable. Kevin also belonged to the Maleny & District Men’s Shed. He was a mainstay of the Blacksmith’s Shop there as well as a member of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club.

He was the current President of the Maleny Cultural & Historical Society.

The thoughts of the members of all of the above organisations are with Kevin’s wife Rita and his family.

Museum Open Day

At the recent Maleny Historical Society Open Day a rare collection of porcelain dolls was unveiled. The collection of about 600 rare dolls and their glass cases was the life’s work of doll artisan Louise Cogzell.

The collection is valued at over $80,000.00. The dolls will take pride of place at the Museum.

Did you know that before 1926, in towns and cities everywhere, the first motorists shared the streets with horse-drawn vehicles.

In Queensland they also shared the same traffic laws.

You would be fined if you drove through intersections or around corners at a speed above 4mph, which was an average horse speed, or if you parked your vehicle at the curb with the engine turned off and the park brake applied and were at too great a distance from your vehicle or away from it for more than 15 minutes you were fined £2.

If the £2 fine was not paid, these motorists faced 7 days in jail. Did they complain that it was just fund raising for the Government.

Motorists were also clearly discouraged from coming into towns. Oh! how things have changed - try getting a park in Maple Street at any time now!

Elder Abuse Forum in Maleny Elder abuse is a neglected aspect of Domestic and Family Violence, so SPEAK UP NOW Maleny and Blackall Range will host a free forum targeting this serious problem at Maleny RSL on Tuesday December 1 at 10.30am.

As well as physical and emotional abuse, elders often suffer abuse of power by those entrusted with their care. It is expected older people from our community as well as those who care for them would attend this important information program.

The forum is free and all are welcome. A complimentary morning tea will be served and it will continue from 11am till 12.30.

Proceedings will open with a 40 minute movie of a play ‘Piano Forte’, written by staff at the Suncoast Community Legal Service. This is a fun and easily accessible way of introducing the issues of elder abuse and the pitfalls associated with Wills and Enduring Powers of Attorney.
