One such attraction is the historic ride on The Mary Valley Rattles from the Historic Gympie Railway Station along the Mary Valley line out to the Amamoor Rail station.

On the weekend of Saturday the 21st August from 9.30am something very special will be happening at the historic Gympie Station making this day an extra special day to visit the Rattler.

The train then departs Amamoor at 12:00pm. arriving back at the Gympie Station at 1:00pm.

The Noosa & District Pipe Band will Pipe the train off as it leaves the station.

The train is pulled by a C17 locomotive. This class was overall the most numerous class

Partnership helps ght pest plants’ invasion

Commitment to protect native wildlife renewed

Landholders are urged to join the ght against pest plants as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s renewed commitment to weed them out.

Following ongoing positive results, Sunshine Coast Council will continue its program to protect native wildlife by preventing and controlling declared feral animals in the region.

On the 22nd July Council endorsed a 12-month Biosecurity Surveillance Program at its Ordinary Meeting. Council of cers will proactively monitor the extent of invasive plants across the region and partner with landholders to manage target species on their properties.

The feral animal prevention and control program targets speci c declared species throughout the Sunshine Coast Council area - wild dogs; feral goats, cats and deer; European foxes and rabbits; and Indian Myna birds.

Those being targeted include groundsel bush, cat’s clawcreeper, reweed, giant rat’s tail grasses and salvinia. Landholder support to council is critical to the program’s success.

Results from the survey program last year found that 28 per cent of properties proactively inspected contained invasive weeds.

Not only do pest plants replace more productive grasses, they invade and compete with pastures, destroy native wildlife habitat.

The 12-month program will start on 6 September 2021.

They also affect livestock that eat the plants, all of which can have a huge economic impact on our farmers.

Council’s Biosecurity Surveillance Program involves council of cers assisting landholders with education materials and equipment to help manage invasive plants on their property which will help landholders meet their legal obligations.

During the 12-month program, council of cers will inspect privately owned properties equal to or greater than 4000m2 within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area.

The program will run from 6 September 2021 to 5 September 2022. Of cers will visit properties to determine invasive plant presence, monitor the effectiveness of control measures being undertaken, collect samples and provide information and education to help property owners control invasive weeds.

Time to register your pet

The annual Sunshine Coast Council pet registration period is coming up in September so now is the perfect time to make sure your pet’s details are up to date.

If you have moved to a new house, your pet has recently been desexed or microchipped or your pet has sadly passed away, it’s important to ensure council has the correct details before registration renewals are sent out late August.

Registration costs just $15 if your dog or cat is desexed and microchipped and it’s free, if you have a current pensioner card.

Period to pay Council rates extended

Sunshine Coast residents have been given an extra week to pay their rate bill as the local council moves to help residents affected by the recent Queensland COVID lockdown. Residents now had until 27 August to pay their rate bills without incurring interest.

Ratepayers who cannot make their rate bill payment by the extended date of 27 August are encouraged to apply to enter into an interest-free payment arrangement.

There is a range of convenient online payment options available to pay your rate bill, including BPAY and by phone on 131 816. Check your rate notice to see all the ways you can pay.

To set up a payment arrangement to pay your rates by fortnightly or monthly instalments residents can log into MyCouncil, contact council by phone 07 5475 7272 between 8.15am and 5pm, Monday to Friday., or email: rates@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au before 27 August. Don’t forget that the early payment discount no longer applies to council rates.

Telstra to allow FREE Public Phone Box Calls

Telstra recently announced that local or national calls to a xed line or Australian mobile from a Telstra payphone would no longer incur a charge.

The move means the days of scrambling for 50 cents in change, or devising a code involving a predetermined number of rings were effectively over.

Australia’s payphone network remained useful for students, homeless people and in emergencies in urban areas.

Telstra also advised it had no plans to remove any of the pay phones, and the number of phones the company maintained was determined by the federal government.

There are still approximately 15,000 public phones around the country from which some 11 million calls are made, including some 230,000 calls to emergency services such as “000”.

The estimated cost to Telstra to allow FREE pay phone calls is expected to be about $5 million annually.

Many vulnerable Australians don't have access to a mobile phone so it's really important for them to break down that sense of social poverty, social isolation to connect with a friend, or to connect with a service. Also it will assist those who are urgently leaving a dangerous domestic situation.

Pay phones also play an important role in emergency situations such as through the bush res, cyclones and oods in keeping people connected. Pay phones are not connected through the mobile network so are more resilient during natural disasters.

r Wallace, Federal Member for Fisher says Australia’s major online wagering operators, including Sportsbet, Ladbrokes and bet365, have pledged to support new measures that will pave the way to bring internet betting laws in line with those that govern casinos, TAB outlets and gaming lounges and already ban cash advances from nearby ATMs. This is going to help a lot of people struggling with problem gambling. For many months I have been leading a campaign in Canberra to ensure that we apply the same rules online that we apply in the real world - if you, rightly, cannot gamble with a credit card in a casino or TAB then you shouldn’t be able to bet with a credit card online.

Credit cards allow problem gamblers to lose not only all they have but much more than they have, at high interest rates, harming themselves and those around them. This announcement from the gambling industry is an important step forward and I will be making sure I keep up the pressure for change.

Responsible Wagering Australia CEO Brent Jackson said his members had acknowledged concerns expressed by policymakers and the community. He said they would be developing measures to bring the online environment into line with gambling at clubs, pubs and casinos where credit card use is prohibited. It will be illegal for a betting company to accept a credit card online.

Rural Land Grants now available Rural landowners in the Sunshine Coast Council area can apply for nancial help to complete on-ground environment projects on their private property, with Expressions of Interest for Sunshine Coast Council’s Landholder Environment Grants now open.

Grants of up to $15,000 are available for projects like bush regeneration; reducing sediment loss on farms; controlling environmental weeds; modifying nonboundary fencing to make it wildlife friendly; revegetating degraded areas; and to establish vegetation corridors and buffer zones. Only private rural landholders can apply.

An acquittal report must be submitted by the applicant detailing project outcomes and how funds received from council were spent. This should align to their funding agreement. A. ll grant funding must be acquitted and must be completed online.

Successful applicants will be advised ten weeks after full application closing date.

The grants are funded by the Environment Levy and delivered on council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy objectives.

Applying is a three-stage process: Submit an Expression of Interest before 30 August 2021.

Plastic pollution is a growing problem and when it ends up in the wrong place, To support students living in the Glass House electorate who wish to further their quali cations after completing it can negatively impact the health of our Year 12 (either at university, in a trade or TAFE), I have communities, our environment and wildlife. developed a bursary for year 12 school leavers – the Joyce Newton OAM Memorial Bursary.

It is in honour of my good friend and community advocate Mrs. Joyce Newton. Joyce sadly passed away in 2018 of Motor Neurones disease.

This bursary is designed to provide nancial assistance to help school leavers with the costs associated with moving to their place of learning, and the purchase of books, IT, trade tools and/or other necessary requirements.

It is now Magpie breeding season “They are protective of their young”

Magpie breeding season has begun across the Sunshine Coast and residents are asked to remain tolerant of this protected and iconic native animal when walking or riding near Magpie nests.

Please do not throw things at magpies or chase them. Stay away from their nests and young, especially birds that are learning to y. Magpies were very clever, remembering faces in their neighbourhood.

Picking up a edgling bird, a young bird that has just left the nest could be seen by the parent bird as threatening its young and it may trigger swooping behaviour.

Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years and can identify individuals by their facial features, even recognising all the people in their neighbourhood.

When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground.

Magpies see cats, dogs and other magpies as intruders - it’s not just people they swoop. Research shows that only about 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop.

National Wattle Day “Australians celebrate National Wattle Day on September 1st” The Golden Wattle is Australia’s national oral emblem, it’s a symbol of Australia, our national colours that our sporting teams proudly display, and it represents us all.

The rst celebration of Wattle Day was held on 1 September 1910 in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

NSW changed the date to 1 August in 1916 because that allowed the Red Cross to use the earlier owering and more familiar Cootamundra Wattle rather than Golden Wattle.

Australia is the land of the wattle with approximately 1,210 different species of wattles, belonging to the genus Acacia, and nearly all of these, about 98-99% only occur in Australia.

The golden wattle, is a tree of the family Fabaceae native to southeastern Australia and it grows to a height of approximately 8 m and has phyllodes ( attened leaf stalks) instead of true leaves.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations used acacias routinely for a very wide range of purposes: from food and medicines, to utensils such as digging sticks and barbs, weapons (clubs, shields, boomerangs, spear throwers, spear shafts and heads), for musical instruments such as clap sticks; rewood, ash, glues, string, dyes and waterproo ng, sandals and head decorations, ceremonial items and seasonal signals.

And this knowledge was taught word-of-mouth from generation to generation for tens of thousands of years.

Since 1915 wattles and wattle groves have been planted in memory of fallen Australians as a living way of remembering and honouring the lives and sacri ces of those servicemen and women who did not return home from war.

Ford Falcon XD Prototype The late 70s and early 1980s was a turbulent time for the motor industry, on the back of the fuel crisis Below is a rare photo that I came across of a Ford Falcon XD Prototype.

The XD Falcon shape was made between 1979 and 1982.

In the photo you will notice the rounded bottoms of the side windows which look smoother than the squared of windows eventually used in the production model.

Note the very coupe-ish style and the extra side window area which was considered for the Falcon as well as the waistline at the read door which was still quite high and the severe treatment at the base of the “A-pillar”.

800g lean beef mince

Giant Cheesy Meatball & Spaghett

3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 1 tbsp Italian seasoning mix 1 tsp dried chilli akes

1.

Combine all the meatball ingredients in a mixing bowl except the bocconcini and olive oil. Season.

Mix everything together until well combined and sticky. Divide mixture into four portions, 200 grams each. Roll into meatballs. Then use your thumb to make a deep dent in the centre of each meatball.

Fill with a bocconcini, pinch mince together to seal cheese inside then roll back into a giant meatball.

2.

Heat oven to 150ºC. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add meatballs to the pan in batches, cook for 5 minutes or until browned on all sides. Then place meatballs on a tray lined with baking paper and transfer to the oven while you prepare the sauce.

3.

Heat another tablespoon of olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Add onion and garlic, sauté for 3 minutes or until onion is soft and translucent. Then add tomato paste, keep stirring and cook for 1 minute.

4.

Add crushed tomatoes, chilli akes, bay leaves, thyme leaves and 1 cup water, season and stir well.

5.

Turn the heat to medium, add the meatballs to the sauce, stir gently until all meatballs are nicely coated in the sauce. Cover the pan slightly with a lid and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the sauce thickens.

6.

Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package instructions.

7.

Drain pasta through a colander, and put the back in the same pot. Add a cup of the marinara sauce to the pasta and stir well.

8.

To serve, dish the spaghetti and place each meatball on top. Ladle extra marinara sauce over the meatball and pasta, sprinkle with parsley and grated parmesan.

Marinara Sauce 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, peeled and nely diced 2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 140g tomato paste 2 (400g) cans crushed tomatoes 1 tsp dried chilli akes 2 bay leaves 3 sprigs of thyme, leaves only 1 packet (500g) spaghetti Parmesan cheese, to serve 3-4 parsley leaves, ne chopped

When planning a prescribed burn for reasons such as wild re suppression, hazard reduction, timber production management and weed control considerations should include the local conditions, e.g. weather, landforms, infrastructure, and safety of animals and people.

People living on bush blocks and surrounded by bushland are always susceptible to bush res. When an unexpected bush re approaches it is then too late to formulate a bush re plan. Now is the time to prepare your family and property so everyone knows what actions to take to survive.

Medical Emergency requires Helicopter On Sunday August 8th the Group was called upon to assist at the Maleny Show-grounds where a Life Flight helicopter landed to take a medical emergency patient to the Brisbane Royal Woman’s Hospital.

This is just one of the tasks that the group is called upon from time to time to assist with at very short notice.

On the day of any planned burn consideration should be given to conditions such as weather and site condition suitability. These conditions include, temperature, humidity, wind-speed and wind direction. Thus it is possible to conduct a cool burn and not effect the fauna and ora too much.

You can work with QFES and your local council to prepare a bush re management plan tailored to the needs of your property. It is not good enough to just light the re and leave it unattended to burn itself until it burns out. This may have been an approach many years ago, but no more.

Weather wise this is a good time of year to nalise your bush management plan and tidy up those areas that ,ay become problematical later in the year when the hotter weather conditions are upon us.

Don’t put if off until it is too late.

More than 170 people have died on Queensland roads this year, including 10 Sunshine Coast residents whose lives were tragically taken too soon. This is already up from a total of 6 last year with 4 months to go.

Recent Queensland Police Service data suggests the state is on track to have 300 Queenslanders die in fatal crashes in 2021. it had been more than a decade since the state had 300 deaths in one year on Queensland roads.

Take Care there are ticks about!

Pets - People and ticks are things that don’t mingle very well. Tick bites can lead to bacterial diseases like Queensland Tick Typhus. They can can also lead to Mammalian Meat Allergy (MMA), which means you can no longer eat red meat. But more common many people suffer allergic reactions to tick saliva. These can range from mild, where the bite gets red, swollen and in amed, to life threatening anaphylaxis.

There are 70 species in Australia and at least 16 bite humans.

Ticks can make you really sick. Diseases i9n animals can be fatal if not properly treated, so all dog owners should take immediate steps to protect their animals.

In Maleny tick season can vary each year, depending greatly on weather patterns. Generally, the of cial season is September through to midsummer, in February. Yet in South East Queensland, we start seeing tick paralysis cases earlier in the year, and often all year round. But generally we see a surge in ticks in August and September, when the temperature and humidity starts to rise.

Under favourable conditions, a second life cycle may result in a second peak in May. However, infestation by adult ticks can occur at any time of the year when conditions are suitable, even in mid-winter.

Tick Paralysis is condition caused by a species of tick found on the eastern seaboard of Australia called Ixodes holocyclus. These ticks are very proli c in Maleny and surrounds, making tick prevention ESSENTIAL to prevent serious illness and death.

Ixodes holocyclus is known as a ‘3 host tick’ because the tick goes through three development phases – each requiring a blood-meal from a warm-blooded host. Typically, larvae hatch form eggs in late February to April or May, followed by nymphs from March to September or October and then gradually the adult population from August to February, peaking around December.

All dog owners are strongly encouraged to have their dogs on a tick control program, regularly check their dogs for ticks, and be on the lookout for signs of any unsuspected illnesses.

I am sure that local Maleny veterinary Services can provide you with all the necessary information to keep those precious pets safe at this time of year.

With snake season about to start, it is so important that all pet owners have a think about snake awareness and making sure their pets are safe this season.

More importantly snakes like an easy meal so eggs are a much more attractive option because wild chooks are a bit harder to subdue. Golf balls (or similar) can be a very effective stand-in for real eggs when the snake comes slithering. It has been found that one fake plastic meal, and the snake will lose interest for good.

The main things to think about are snake proo ng pets enclosures like chicken coops, guinea pig enclosures and bird aviaries. If the enclosures are not snake proofed correctly, then its basically a buffet waiting for snakes to arrive.

Please make sure there are no gaps around the enclosure and very small chicken wire is used to secure all sides of the enclosure so snakes can’t get in.

By keeping your property rodent-free you will go a long way to making your property a lot less attractive to snakes as it is the rodents that the snakes are initially chasing, the chooks just happen to be there.

Snakes can atten themselves so even large snakes can squeeze through the tiniest gaps if given the chance, so make sure you have a sturdy, secure coop.

If you do nd a snake on your property, don’t panic! Handling a snake without training is dangerous, and most people are bitten attempting to remove or kill a snake.

They didn’t come into your garden to hurt you so keep an eye out for snakes on the move as we move closer to spring time!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts and opinion Now that Brisbane has been named as the scene of the 2032 Olympics it will be very interesting to see whose names are lined up as part of the administration of the games.

With such public expenses the list will be long.

Undoubtedly, there will be the list of ex-politicians eager to get their names back into the public purse and many decisions will be made along political party lines, irrespective of the persons ability or circumstances.

The State Government predicts economic bene ts in the billions of dollars and jobs for the next 20 years for hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These predictions are always very optimistic, but just how often does those promising predictions come to the fore?

A Queensland Government report identi es that the 2032 Olympic Games will deliver economic bene ts for the 10 years leading up the games and then 10 years after. Games Organising Committee costs are estimated at costing $4.45 billion total for the staging of the Games but there will be at no cost to Queensland as those costs will be offset by: •

An International Olympic Committee contribution of at least $2.5 billion; and

•

Revenues such as sponsorship and ticket sales

Those costings were completed in 2019, before the world changed with the Covid pandemic. There is only one thing guaranteed and that is that the running costs of the games will increase at a rate above in ation.

It should be remembered that the 2016 Rio Olympics cost over $13 billion US dollars whilst the 2021 London Olympics cost $14.8 billion US dollars.

In an attempt to ensure gaining the Olympic Games for Brisbane in 2032 one could guarantee that there would be little or no mention of costing over runs. One only has to over view other major government project to see how costs always get “blown out”.

The federal government will cover half the cost for the 2032 Olympic Games, should frontrunner Brisbane be con rmed as the host. Once again it is public money.

An important question that should be pondered is; “Is the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games really about sport or is there another agenda running in the background?”

In hosting the Olympics many cities end up going into debt because they hosted the games and basic community needs are neglected.

Maleny Neighbourhood News

The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre relies heavily on community donations and funding to carry out the many services provided to local people.

One of those services is the Maleny Women’s House. The Maleny Women’s House provides transitional short termed accommodation for women and children from Maleny and the surrounding area who are experiencing the risk of homelessness, or are currently homeless and need to move into appropriate and physically secure housing.

MNC has found that assisting women to move into more stable housing can often take 2-3 months.

The Women’s House however is NOT a women’s shelter for women eeing domestic violence.

For further information about being able to access this facility contact the Housing Manager – Katherine Miller on 0493 110 523, to discuss eligibility and assessment process.

Recently the members of the Maleny Masonic Club rallied to the assistance of the Neighbourhood Centre and presented a cheque for the amount of $5000 to go towards costs associated with the Woman’s House project.

Anro Asia Runs aground on Bribie Island Do you remember when the Anro Asia cargo ship ran aground at the northern tip of Bribie Island on the 29th October, 1981 whilst entering Moreton Bay?

It will be 40 years since this incident occurred drawing crowds on the shores of Caloundra's Happy Valley to watch the weeklong recovery event.

board, allowing tug boats to tow the vessel free. Also removed was 1100 tonnes of bunker fuel.

Want a Low Maintenance Garden - try Succulents Low maintenance, easy-care, good-looking greenery?

Succulents are the answer!

With the huge array of varieties, textures, tones, and shapes, it's never been easier to design your very own succulent bowl that will take pride of place on your bench top, balcony or garden.

Step 1: Layer some rocks or pebbles in the base of the pot if you have them - this will help with drainage.

In 1907 the Maleny Hotel was built by Harry Bate & Sam Sallaway, for Joseph Alfred Pollock, the rst licensee, using locally pit-sawn beech timber. Months later the licence was transferred to Mr ACK Cooke.

The hotel was sold to the Burnett Family in approximately 1921 and a second storey was added.
