Maleny Showgrounds hosts Queensland Caravan Club
Maleny Showgrounds offers great facilities for caravanning visitors.
The Maleny Show-grounds hosted the Queensland Caravan Club members between January 11th and 16th for their monthly “walkabout”.
The Club, which was formed in 1949 meets monthly for organised rallies, usually within
200 kilometres of Brisbane which are planned 12 months in advance. Each rally has a theme and the theme at Maleny is “Hawaiian”.
Attendance at rallies is generally between 50 and 100 caravans. Members relax in an informal and
friendly atmosphere and enjoy a variety of social activities. Often during their stay in local communities the caravaners attend events and sporting clubs within that precinct. Have a happy Maleny stay and comer back soon!

Government out of touch on mental health and suicide prevention support
Government out of touch on mental health and suicide prevention support Sunshine Coast MP Andrew Wallace has slammed the Federal Government’s decision to cut psychologist visits as a kick in the guts for Australians seeking mental health treatment.
On the same day Suicide Prevention Australia called on the Albanese Government for urgent support, Health Minister Mark Butler announced patients would only be able to claim Medicare rebates for 10 visits to a psychologist instead of the 20 visits introduced by the Coalition Government in August 2020.
“Labor is completely out of touch with the needs of the Australian people, and they are patently out of their depth,” Mr Wallace said.
The Federal Member for Fisher said the Liberal National Party were committed to mental health and suicide prevention as evident in the former Coalition Government’s investment to double the number of individual Medicare

According to data released by Suicide Prevention Australia, more than one in three (38%) Australians know someone in their personal life or networks, who has died by or attempted suicide in the past 12 months.
The peak body’s findings showed cost-of-living and personal debt remained the number one issue driving elevated distress.
“I am deeply disturbed by Labor’s latest betrayal to the most vulnerable people who need our help,” Mr Wallace said.
“Labor turned their backs on our first responders, cutting funding for their mental health care before the Coalition pressured the Albanese Government to backflip last month.
“Prime Minister Albanese must reverse this heartless decision.”

What is happening to Brisbane’s Cross River Tunnel
The Princess Alexandra Hospital, Queensland’s largest has been forced to make big budget cut of $9 million from the frontline at Princess Alexandra Hospital at a time the Queensland Health Crisis is worsening.
Doctors and nurses will face cuts “equivalent to closing 2 wards.” It has been revealed that surgeries were already being slashed at the hospital due to concerns over its anaesthetics training accreditation.
The PA Hospital is facing more pressure than ever and it is now being asked to make more budget cuts. This budget cut at the PA hospital will result in further forced cuts to surgeries. These cuts will have serious impacts on some patients.
Patients are the ones who lose when our hospital staff are under resourced and overburdened.
POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY Queensland Youth Justice Minister Leanne Linard
Speaking in early 2021 about “Youth Bail”.
Ms Linard has ruled out making breach of bail a crime for teens, saying to do so would not impact ofending. Te minister also said investing in early intervention programs would have a bigger impact on youth ofending in the long run.
Maybe Children’s Service Department needs more support!!!!
The Minister in November 2022 dismissed questions about the release date about the exact contents of the recent Bob Atkinson review of causes of youth crime. The Palaszczuk government has had the final report since arch 2022. Why has it not been released and will it ever be publicly released?

Licensed Roadworthy Inspector on the premises
Queensland Road Toll is “On the rise”
The year 2022 saw 299 people lose their lives on Queensland roads. This is the most since 2009, when 331 people died.
This included12 people who died after they drove their vehicles into flood waters.
It has long been known that the “fatal 5” –speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, seatbelts and mobile phones are the main causes of serious road incidents.
Whilst governments have a role to play in reducing this tragic road toll, it is important to remember that drivers too have responsibilities as a driver on the roads. These lives are people, our relatives, not just statistics.
Need a Roadworthy Certificate?
Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy. All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

Since January, 70% of cats and dogs coming into RSPCA Queensland haven’t had a microchip. The worrying statistic has prompted the charity to issue a warning to pet owners this holiday season. “With increased storms, fireworks, and people going on holiday, we do see an increase in lost and found calls about pets,” says RSPCA spokesperson Emma Lagoon.
“If your cat or dog isn’t microchipped, or if the microchip has out of date information, it’s harder for pets to be reunited when they enter council or shelter facilities.”
More pets with microchips and up-to-date details would see fewer animals being placed up for adoption.
Ms Lagoon says, “When owners can’t be found or they don’t come forward to reclaim their pets, these poor animals then have to start all over and look for a new family to love them.”
RSPCA Queensland was able to successfully reunite nearly 3,000 animals with their owners last year.
The RSPCA’s Top Tips for pet owner peace of mind:
• Get your pet microchipped and registered –ask your local vet.
Why
If you want your home to remain as comfortable as possible during the summer months, you should consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of excessive moisture in the air. With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.
Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.
Click on the advertising at right to purchase directly online and have it home delivered.
• Unsure if your pet is microchipped? Ask your vet.
• Check your pet’s chip details are up to date – visit www.petaddress.com.au
• Getting a new pet – check their chip before taking them home. If you do purchase, or get an animal, the original owner will need to sign over ownership on a change of ownership form before the microchip registration company can change the pet into your name.
• Ensure your pet wears a collar with your contact number visible, council registration tag or RSPCA VIP tag.
• Going away for the holidays? Register your pet with RSPCA’s Home Alone service. If you do lose or find a pet, you can notify RSPCA’s Lost and Found team on 1300 363 736. For a small fee our Lost and Found Team can also assist in searching for your pet by conducting shelter and council database searches and across social media pages.

Lithium-ion batteries could be a danger
Now that Christmas is over it is obvious that many people have received gifts and tools that are powered by lithium-ion batteries. Batteries are particularly a risk when being charged.
Whilst the percentage of this type of batteries causing damage is low the incidence of battery fires is climbing, as more and more household goods become battery charged. it is important that users handle them and charge them under safe circumstances.
Initially, it is vital each device only ever be connected to the correct charger. Lithium-ion batteries should never be overcharged. ,They should in fact be disconnected from the charge when it has reached maximum charge.
It is best to charge larger devices outside the home and away from ignitable objects such as clothing or material. Both the battery and device should never be left in direct sunlight, or in an area where they can overheat.
Batteries should be treated as hazardous waste and there are many places to get rid of them for free. To put out large lithium-ion battery fires, use a foam extinguisher containing CO2, powder graphite, ABC dry chemical, or sodium carbonate.

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets? We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.
Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Ms Brittany Higgins has gained a finalised compensation claim against Senator Reynolds, Liberal frontbencher Michaelia Cash, and the Commonwealth Government. for an undisclosed sum which will not be advised t the request of Ms Higgins. Subsequently claims against the two politicians were subsequently dropped.
Say that again; Ms Higgins has received a cash payout for a night of unknown behaviours and it will be fully paid for by the Australian taxpayer. This behaviour was not verified by a subsequent very expensive taxpayer funded trial, so who really knows exactly what the truth of the situation was.
The original claim included $2.5 million for future economic loss, past economic loss, general damages of future assistance with at-home care and past and future out-ofpocket expenses of a further $150,000 - in total about $3 million.
It should be noted that this claim was settled after just one day of mediation discussions between the claimant and the Federal Government. The personal injury claim was commenced only on December 2nd, 2022.
For those who are a little cynical it would not be hard to believe that one or other of the parties had a lot to hide so that it could not be aired in a civil court proceedings. This is just one of a large number of civil claims brought against the various levels of government for behaviours that were mostly brought on by the claimants putting themselves into situations that were problematic and unadvisable.
In this instance the original trial was aborted because of juror misconduct. Even though a new trial was possible the public prosecutor decided not to re-list the trial, so there is no way to test the evidence. Neither party receives finalisation to this matter and will always carry the stigma.
Perhaps by taking this civil action to trial would have brought about some clarity about this incident as the onus of proof is at a lesser level to prove.
It is important that the truth comes out to remove any cloud over the character of the innocent party. Should it be that one party was guilty as charged then it is equally important that justice is done and also seen to be served with proper punishment or fair treatment is given by the legal system.
Once again the Australian taxpayer is expected to “carry the can” for some individual’s poor decisions and behaviour.

Italian prisoners of war in Australia were Italian soldiers captured by the British and Allied Forces in World War II and taken to Australia. Between 1941 and 1945, Australia received custody of 18,420 Italian POWs.
The Italian prisoners of war were more than just a POW. They were fathers, brothers, sons and husbands from across Italy and from diverse backgrounds and occupations.
A little known fact to many Malenyites is that during WW11 there were prisoners of war living within the Maleny - Kenilworth area. These prisoners were working on farms to help fill the labour shortage as many Australian males were away at war. The Australian farms had been left basically manless.
Whilst the official Prisoner of War Camp, officially known as Q7 PWCC was situated in Elizabeth Street, Kenilworth prisoners actually lived on local farms.
During WW11 the sending of Aussie males to war led to a shortage of labour on Australian farms. Australia had to accommodate nearly 20,000 Italian prisoners of war. Was there a solution here?
A plan was developed by the Australian government to allow Italian POWs to work on local Australian farms without any guards. The majority of the Italian POWs who worked on farms created strong relationships with the farmers and the local community.
Kenilworth was the home of Italian Prisoner of War Camp Q7 PWCC between 1944 and 1946. It housed approximately 150 prisoners.
Long termed residents would remember Mrs Beryl Newton. She was an ex-school teacher and she and
her husband had a dairy farm at Curramore. She remembered two Italian prisoners of war being sent to their home farm. They were no trouble and worked happily for the most part, and were very glad to be out of the fighting. Whilst language barriers between the farmers and the Italian POWs often was a problem causing some misunderstandings there mostly was a way to make themselves understood. Some did had some understanding of english before arriving in Australia. When Australian farmers and Italian prisoners of war were thrown together into new and strange situations they learnt to adapt. They were issued with clothing, underwear and footwear by the government…The clothing had been dyed burgundy red. When washed the burgundy red dye would come out in the washing copper. Much of this clothing was discarded Australian uniforms, cleaned, repaired and now dyed a burgundy colour, mostly well worn. The colour was conspicuous, to make POWs stand out in a

crowd. These red uniforms were loathed by the Italians for various reasons.
Over time they become very depressed if they received no letters from their family at home. They knew that fierce fighting between the Allied and German forces was taking place up the length and breadth of Italy, so they worried about their families safety.
Most families treated them as one of the family and included them at the table for breakfast, lunch and dinner. As a result many Aussie families savoured a new meal; spaghetti. This was eaten by the Italians in copious quantities.
One of the prisoners made rings out of coins with "jewels" out of coloured tooth brush handles. The other did exquisite holy pictures with threads pulled from a scarf that he had brought with him. Other prisoners worked on a number of other farms in the area, including around the Witta area. They were found to be diligent workers mostly and caused little trouble within their communities. To many communities the POW’s were not treated strictly as they should have been . Even though they were not to mingle within communities they often did.
At the end of the war, in accordance with the Geneva Convention, all Italian POWs had to be repatriated to Italy. It was not until 1947 that repatriation was completed because of a shortage of ships following the end of the war.
On their return to Italy many found that there were no jobs, little food and little hope for the future for them or their families.
The first Italian POW’s returned to Adelaide on the 30th November 1948 as assisted migrants. They were the first of a stampede of former POW’s. .
As many had formed such strong bonds with Australian families who were able to sponsor their return to Australia, many subsequently sought to returned to Australia as migrants under The Assisted Migration Scheme of 1951. Thus they began long lives as valuable Aussies.
Many of these migrants worked on major infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads, dams, hydroelectric plants, railways throughout Australia. Projects such as the Snowy Mountain project and the national highway around Australia would have been very difficult to complete without the influx of the Italian migrants.
In North Queensland the sugar cane industry was growing at a fast rate and many Italians headed to North Queensland.
Cutting cane was hard work but the Italians were used to that so they found work there and many subsequently were able to purchase their own farm. Once they themselves became established they began to sponsor their relatives to come to Australia also. When many Italians came to Australia they thought Aussies “Were a Weird Mob”, but soon fitted into their communities.
In 2019 Joanne Tapiolas completed research into Italian Prisoners of War in Australia. The results can be seen at: https://italianprisonersofwar.com/

Australian-made On-grid
RedEarth Energy Storage is proud to announce that its Troppo-4841 battery module is the first Australian-made battery approved by Australia’s Clean Energy Council (CEC), making it the most advanced, high energy density, compliant Australian battery on the CEC list.
The versatile 4.1kWh Troppo battery module can be used on grid or off grid, to substitute old lead acid battery banks, as part of a RedEarth integrated ‘Personal Power Plant’ or with other reputable inverter systems. The Troppo will be made available as part of its integrated systems, or supplied to the industry as a standalone product.
The Troppo-4841 includes a display that shows the state of charge as well as voltage and current, making it the easiest battery for installers to install, and easy for customers to see at a glance how much electricity they have in their batteries.
The most popular solar batteries are now lithium-ion based batteries. You should expect your lithium home batteries to last between 10 and 15 years under normal conditions.
Running a battery flat or over-charging it can also cause damage to a battery, leading to a reduced lifetime. RedEarth uses intelligent batteries, with software to protect the battery cells from these situation. RedEarth systems are designed so that individual batteries can be replaced as required without changing the whole system.
Your solar battery will perform at its best when installed in a cool, dry place.
Installing a solar storage system can increase the value of your home, whether you choose to stay and reap the rewards yourself, or sell, and make the most from your additional equity. So, whether you are a homeowner or landlord, consider solar an investment, not an expense, and choose a system that can adapt to changing energy needs.
When you combine smart energy consumption with the long-term efficiency of a solar battery, you’re on the right path to saving money. But like any big investment, it’s important to know how to get the best out of your system so you can maximise the benefits available to you.

What is a director ID?
A director identification number (director ID) is a unique 15-digit number given to a director (or someone who will become a director), who has verified their identity with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). It’s free to apply and while directors need to apply for their own director ID, they'll keep it forever even if they: change companies; or stop being a director; or change their name; or move interstate or overseas.
Timing
The Corporations Law requires if you were appointed as a director before 31 October 2021 you must have a director ID However, if you are appointed as a director you MUST apply for a director ID before you are appointed.
Who needs a director ID? You need a director ID if you're a director of a: company aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation registered Australian body, for example, an
incorporated association that is registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and trades outside the state or territory in which it is incorporated foreign company registered with ASIC and carrying on business in Australia (regardless of where you live).
If your organisation has an Australian business number (ABN) find out if it is registered with ASIC. company, which will have an Australian company number (ACN)
registered Australian body, which will have an Australian Registered Body Number (ARBN) registered foreign company, which will have an ARBN Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations have an Indigenous Corporation Number (ICN) and may also have an ABN.
Conclusion
ASIC is responsible for administration of the director ID, under the Corporations Act and it is a criminal offence not to apply on time.
If you need help and support, you can contact your solicitor, or tax agent, to help decide if you need to apply for the director ID.
At Easton Lawyers our Senior Associate, Michelle Kleinig would be happy to assist you, understand your obligations under the Corporations Act, please don’t hesitate to contact us on (07)5494 3511

to the
So, what are you doing after this trip?” is a question n that’s been asked to me many times by what I’d assume at this stage would be hundreds of people I’ve had the pleasure of striking up a conversation with on my journey so far. To answer that question will require time as I don’t really know just yet.
Ive got a reasonable idea. I have a pile of sketchbooks and paper worth of ideas and notes. Everything from road graders with cranes towing double decker buses converted into trailers, right through to tractors with Detroit diesel truck motor conversions.
Inside those notepads are calculations, measurements and diagrams from many nights spent sitting at my camp throughly designing and sketching scaled down ideas from right around the country. There are some messy scribbles in there as well as the precision work as a result from me sitting at 35kph in the middle of the Desert highway behind the wheel or from a sudden BINGO idea at 2 am in the morning.
But all in all there’s a lot and at the end of this journey I’ll have to sort through them all and figure out what I like and what ideas can be built.
The longer this trip takes the more experiences I’m being exposed to and the more people I have the privilege of meeting and learning from.

Last Circus show for the year!
It has been a long time away from family and friends so I made the trek via plane back to home at Maleny for 2 weeks over Christmas to be with the family.
Last year I missed Chrissy and spent it in Darwin. I was threatened by my entire family that they would hunt me down if I didn’t comply with the request to return for this past Christmas .
It was good to be back on the farm for a couple weeks and to catchup with some mates before returning to Perth to continue the journey in the new year.
Another Big Announcement
Early December saw the total amount that I have handed over to my favourite charities pass the $150,000 mark.
Make sure that you look after your matesTreat them all well!.
There are no places for bullies or abusers.

Maleny High School Opening 1954
From the mid 1950s, Maleny parents urged the Education Department to open a Secondary Department at the Maleny State School. Children wishing to gain secondary education had to travel to the Nambour High School where they boarded weekly, or were sent away to boarding schools.
Parents at the one teacher North Maleny School were asked if they’d agree to their school closing and this school was transported into the school site in Cedar Street. At the beginning of 1954 the Maleny Secondary Department opened with 27 students enrolled. The Principal was Mr Herbert Hughes, the staff were Mr Ernest Whatmough, Miss Janet McRobert & Miss Doreen Brown.
The official opening of the school was performed by the Hon G Devries, Minister for Education in October 1954.
