Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Grant Applications now

Calling all not-for-pro ts – start prepping your grant applications now!

It’s a brand new year and as not-for-pro t community groups start planning their crucial fundraising events and activities for 2021, Sunshine Coast Council is reminding volunteers to plan their Major Grants applications now with up to $210,000 on offer.

Council’s Major Grants offer up to $30,000 for infrastructure projects and up to $15,000 for other projects. Applications for round one are open 1 February to 15 March.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said a temporary reduction in co-funding requirements for Major Grant applications was now in place for the next round, designed to assist community groups with their projects.

“We know how dif cult fundraising has been this last year and while things have improved for many, this opportunity will give a helping hand to organisations whose fundraising activities are still ramping up,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Council is keen to support community groups with projects that can start and nish quickly and in turn, support local economic activity.

“Co-funding requirements will be temporarily reduced from 75 per cent to just 50 per cent for requests over $15,000, and co-funding will not be required for requests between $7500 and $10,000 for applications for the round closing on 15 March 2021.

“We’re also encouraging as many community groups as possible to prepare in advance and not leave their project planning and applications to the last minute.

“This is a good time of year to reach out to other community groups to collaborate and plan the projects which help make the Sunshine Coast a thriving community.”

In 2020 council provided approximately $5 million in total community grants including $795,048 in COVID-19 Community Response Grants to 201 community groups.

In my capacity as the Federal Member for Fisher it is important that I keep our community up to date with matters that could impact you and that of your family.

As we head into year two of the pandemic it is more important than ever that we continue to do all we can to protect the lives of our fellow Australians. The rst COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the P zer vaccine.

The P zer vaccine has met strict standards for safety, quality and ef cacy. The TGA provisional approval is for individuals 16 years of age and older. Two doses will be required – at least 21 days apart. In Australia COVID-19 vaccines will be rolled out in ve phases over the coming months and, over time, will involve more than 1,000 vaccination administration sites.

We understand that vaccines work. They save lives and they improve lives. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there at the moment, as well as a lack of access to information about the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines as they become available.

The purpose of this letter is to assure you of the facts.

Australia has one of the most rigorous and advanced medical regulatory processes of anywhere in the world. All vaccinations must progress through the TGA’s stringent regulations.

The TGA is part of the Federal Department of Health, and is responsible for regulating therapeutic goods including prescription medicines, vaccines, sunscreens, medical devices and vitamins. Almost any product for which therapeutic claims are made must be entered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) before it can be supplied in Australia.

When any company, including those that supply vaccinations, wants to sell a prescription-only medicine in Australia, the TGA checks the evidence rst, and only approves medicine if the balance of bene t and risk is acceptable for a particular condition.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell Welcome upgrades made to Landsborough-Maleny, Hovard and Alfs Roads in Bald Knob TMR have recently advised that they will be installing and upgrading line marking where Hovard and Alf's roads intersect with Landsborough-Maleny Road at Bald Knob so that drivers can better identify which vehicles have priority when multiple vehicles enter or exit the two side roads.

Super proud of our young apprentice who has just passed his rst I-CAR course.

Travelling Jackaroo getting close to “hitting the road” Sam Hughes is a 17 years old and from February 2021. He will be driving his fully restored Chamberlain 9G tractor around Australia towing a 6.5m long trailer with a plane mounted on the roof.

We will continue to send our team to update their knowledge on the new cars that are being released. This way we can repair your car the correct way to keep you and your family safe.

The trip will be fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial and more pending. The trip will be a long one with many ups and downs, so he has set up a fund to keep the tractor and trailer on the road, not as a donation page for the charities, but to cover any mechanical issues or other problems that may be encountered on the road and throughout the journey.

I-CAR is an industry based Not for Pro t organisation and has a worldwide presence including the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

These issues could be anything from a new starter or punctured tyre to a catastrophic engine repair, as at its core this is a 50 year old tractor taking up to a 13,500km trip on rough dirt roads.

I-CAR training ensures that every person in the collision repair industry who completes the ICAR Training Courses has the information, knowledge and skills required to perform complete and safe and quality repairs for the ultimate bene t of the consumer.

Early Maleny

through the eyes of Harold Brooker (dec) (Harrold Brooker (now deceased) was part of the Maleny pioneering Brooker family.

He saw many changes take place in the Maleny district before his death in the late 1990’s. His brother, Bert passed away only recently (2002). Unfortunately, both Harrold & Bert took many memories of the development of the district with them. Chris Brooker (Bert's son and Harrold's nephew) and his family still live in Maleny.

Today when we drive our four wheel drive vehicles on bitumen roads we can only imagine the dif culties that our parents had to sustain. These conditions were not generations ago, but in the living memory of some of our town’s current residents.

Harold Brooker remembers the years when it rained continuously for six months, turning the byways into nothing but mud from fence line to fence line. time was in Cedar Street, the present site of the Maleny kindergarten, it was impossible to go faster than a trot because of the mud.

Mudgeeraba where the family worked on a dairy farm milking 420 cows a day through race bails, by hand.

“You soon got sick of cows,” said Harold.

Coming from a large family of ve boys and two sisters, Harold soon learnt what it was like for a family to work together as all the family had their chores to do each day.

“Life was always pretty tough, but I have no complaints.”

When the railways opened up in the early 1890s, horse drawn vehicles gathered at the main station yards in Landsborough, Palmwoods and Nambour, waiting for passengers to arrive and transporting them to camping spots beside the sea or to guest houses in places like Montville, Buderim and Maleny.

Harry Lyons from Maleny, in addition to his garage and mechanical business, operated a car rental business and bus depot from the lower end of Maple Street.

Times certainly have changed.

Harold remembers having sixpence to spend one afternoon after school so he bought six pence worth of chocolate.

He ate the lot on the way home that day. He got so much that he was sick before he got home, painting the road half the way.

One day we had just had enough so dad called it quits and we shifted to Pimpama. Ironically, the dairy we had just left then got milking machines.

In 1923, he pioneered the first motor service between Maleny and Landsborough and in October 1938 he took over the main contract and passenger service from Albert Benhrendorff.

When we look down the streets of Maleny today it is hard to imagine wagons ploughing through mud up to the shafts - in fact, says Harold Brooker, the mud was so deep that it came up to the tow boards where the carters used to carry their corn beef so that the salt didn’t rust the milk churns.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Early Maleny through the eyes of Harold Brooker (dec) (Continued from Page 3) The family eventually returned to Maleny, via Beaudesert and Gympie.

Like their father before them, the younger Brooker family saw the transport industry as their destiny, Father Brooker having horse and bullock wagons carrying butter and general cargo between Maleny and Landsborough, Brothers Bert and Arthur also went into the transport industry with cream, milk, mail and school runs in the Witta and Curramore area.

Harold also joined the transport industry when, in 1950, he found work with Watson & Sons as a taxi driver in Maleny.

Harold had sustained serious injuries in 1946 following an industrial accident at the Maleny Co-operative store when he fell from about 10 meters onto a concrete oor whilst trying to stop water damage to the store during a cyclone.

It was believed at the time that he would not walk again, however he did better than walking again, he was able to nd work as a taxi driver.

There were three taxis in Maleny at that time. People weren’t as mobile in those days. Cars were not generally owned by people. At the start to holiday periods it was nothing to have up to seventeen bus loads of people bring brought into town from the Landsborough Railway Station by Watson’s Transport.

Even then, Maleny depended on the tourist industry for some of its sustenance. Most people stayed at the pub or the guest house.

Nephew Chris also went into the transport industry as director/owner of Goldlink Petroleum, B.P. Agents for the

Sunshine Coast-South Burnett Area.

Now Chris Brooker’s daughter, Joanne is the proud owner/operator of a Maleny school bus run. So the transport tradition with the Brooker family and Maleny moves into the next generation.

In one family generation from horse-wagon on mud based roadways to 22 wheeler semi trailers travelling at over 100kph on bitumen roads carrying bulk fuel.

Knitfest Maleny is “on” in 2021 Knitfest, the Yarn & Fibre Festival in Maleny once again will be held on the 3rd and 4th July, 2021.

This will a weekend of fun, knitting, crochet, bre arts, 27 workshops, 100 trade and market stalls, Music, displays and demonstrations.

The theme for this year is “There’s a Dragon in my Garden”.

Vale Una Lyon Message from Maleny Senior Citizens Maleny Senior Citizens President, Margaret Martin. “It seems to be a sad time. I regret to say that our Life Member, Una Lyon, passed away today Friday at 5am.”

Aunty Una Lyon has not been well for sometime and has been in and out of hospital in the last few months. Cap Lyon , her husband, was with her as was her family.

Mrs Una Lyon, nee Martin was born on the 21.05.1927 in the Maleny Hospital.

Ms Martin continued, “Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. When funeral arrangements are known I will let everyone know.”

“Some Good Painting Tips” Re-painting a room is a good quick way to give it a freshen up and even change the look and atmosphere without it costing the earth. It will even add value to your home, especially if you are selling. A good paint job is not dif cult or messy to get if you follow a few basic rules and don’t try to cut corners.

Handy

The best way to clean walls ready for painting is to use sugar soap. Brush walls to remove surface dirt.

Dissolve half a cup of sugar soap in 5L of water and apply with a sponge or cloth, then rinse off using a clean damp sponge.

Decorative detailing, such as trim and mouldings, needs to be carefully sanded to get the best result.

The most effective way is to use a sanding sponge.

Sponges conform to the shape of the timber work and can get into crevices that sandpaper can’t.

They also apply even pressure and make it easy to cut down rough spots.

Before applying new paint, aky paint needs to be removed or the new coat won’t adhere and will eventually ake off as well.

Protect oors with cardboard or plastic drop sheets which are inexpensive, or both.

Hold the brush handle between your thumb and fore nger, resting your ngertips on the top. Dip half the bristles in the paint, then wipe on the side

Preparation is the key to a good paint job, so make sure the walls are clean, aky paint is removed and trim is sanded before you even get out the paintbrushes and rollers.

It is important to prepare the walls and protect surfaces to minimise mess and get a perfect nish.

Disposable gloves not only keep your hands clean when painting, but they can also be used to prevent your brush from drying out when taking breaks. It minimises clean-up, too. Use a twist tie around the handle to keep air out.

We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under ve dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Pro ts from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

You too can do your bit to help and there is no ghting in the aisles over the toilet paper!

No ghting “terrorist shoppers” in the aisles and no shortage - that has to be a bargain.

Just a note on just one project that is now complete.

Last year we donated $10,000 to one of our partner organisations, Shining Hope for Communities to build brand new toilets that will provide proper sanitation to thousands of people in Mathare, one of Nairobi’s oldest informal settlements.

Just some updates on how the project is going, that we wanted to share with you! After all, none of this would be possible without your support.

As of September 2020, the toilets are completed! The new toilets in Mathare don’t look exactly like what you might have in your home. Technically, these toilets are pour- ush latrines tted with lids and piping that connect to a septic tank. After use, residents pour water into these latrines in order to ush waste into the tank – a safe and hygienic means of waste removal.

Isn’t it amazing just how times and fashions change!

These latrines were built in lieu of more traditional toilets because it was impossible to access a sewer line. Also operated are 5 water kiosks in Mathare By expanding their water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programming into Mathare, they’ve made sure that thousands more people have access to clean water. The water kiosks are tted with solar lighting panels to guide people safely at night.

Police on patrol in Adelaide spotted a car being driven through the city at about a.m. one night last week with the number plates as in the photo below:

One would just have to wonder why the police would intercept this vehicle as it was innocently being driven through the city.

The number plates had in fact been painted over and hand painted with different characters and a helpful message.

An inspection and enquiries revealed the driver was disquali ed and his vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.

He was reported for driving while disquali ed, with a defaced number plate, and at night without lights.

Who would think that the police would be suspicious of this vehicle and would need to check on the driver’s identity?

Recipes from Jeremi Pepper-crusted Lamb with Plum Chutne

Fillet of Lamb rib eye llet of lamb ½ cup mint jelly

Preheat oven to moderate 180°C (375°F).

¼ cup ground pepper

1.

Brush lamb with mint jelly.

2.

Place pepper on a greaseproof sheet and roll lamb llet to coat evenly.

½ cup canned plums drained and chopped

3.

Place lamb onto an oiled baking dish and bake for twenty minutes.

⅓ balsamic vinegar

4.

Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing

Plum Chutney ½ cup cranberry sauce

Plum Chutney

2 tablespoons sifted brown sugar

1.

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring slowly to the boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.

2.

Reduce to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until the mixture thickens.

3.

Chutney can be made up to three days ahead and stored in the refrigerator until required.

4.

Serve with baked potatoes, baked garlic and a salad of green leaves topped with fried bacon and bottled french dressing mixed with yoghurt, salt and pepper to taste.

Maleny SES Volunteer group News Sunshine Coast SES Open/ Recruitment Day The Maleny SES Group played their part in the Sunshine Coast SES Open Day at the Nambour Show-grounds on the weekend of January 30th - 31st.

This Open Day is an important event in the annual recruiting program for all Sunshine Coast SES Groups.

Maleny RFB is part of Rural Fire Service Queensland. The Maleny Group covers over 100 sq kilometres and have 3 re ghting trucks and 1 Command Vehicle. The group also assists other volunteer groups.

Team work is the key to a successful operation. On the night of February 15th Maleny & Nambour and District State Emergency Service Groups participated in a joint landsearch eld exercise to locate a missing person.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts It is only a couple of weeks since we last thought about the short-comings of the Child Justice System with the tragic death of Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field walking their dog in Alexandra Hills in a freak accident by a drugged up 17 year old in a stolen car Only a couple of weeks on and here we are again dealing with the death of another innocent young person in North Queensland at the hands of a young driver in a stolen vehicle.

In between the two recent events how many times have we heard on the nightly news of young drivers in stolen vehicles driving dangerously on our roads putting innocent Queenslanders at risk of death or serious injury.

Inevitably when the offender is caught it is ascertained that they are serious habitual repeat offenders and more often than not are again on bail for other similar offences.

OK; I can already hear the bleating of those who believe that the “softly - softly” approach and those who believe in the individual persons civil rights starting to ark up about any talk of some more restrictive action being taken against offenders.

I just wish those same “do-gooders” would stand up for the rights of the innocent law abiding Australians who also live in our society.

It is obvious that the present system is not working and it is progressively getting worse, not better.

Several decades of soft against against serial offenders is not working - in fact it is being mocked at by the offenders. Even civil libertarians need to have a re-think - they do not have all the answers.

Time has come for a change and a different style of action being taken. Who has all the answers?

I don’t believe that anyone has a solution that is 100% perfect but to continue on the same projection is simply a further plan to failure.

There is no simply cause of this problem and it will take a dedicated justice system to come up with the right answers, but major changes must be taken. Maybe some “eggs will get broken” in implementing a new system but it has to be tried.

“I bought it today,” the grand- on says.

“With what money?” Truthful asks.

Truthful knows what a new F150 cost.

“Well,” the grand-son says, “this one cost me just fteen dollars.”

The boy’s father looks at him like he’s crazy.

“Who would sell a truck like that for fteen dollars?” he says.

“It was the lady up the street,” says the boy. “I don’t know her name – they just moved in. She saw me ride past on my bike and asked me if I wanted to buy her F150 for fteen dollars.

“Oh my Goodness!” says the father. “Maybe she’s mentally ill or has Alzheimer’s something. Truthful, you better go see what’s going on.”

So Truthful walks up the street to the house where the lady lives and nds her out in the yard calmly planting petunias.

He introduces himself as the grand-father of the boy to whom she had sold a new Ford F150 truck for fteen dollars and asks to know why she did it.

“Well,” she says, “two days ago my husband left on a business trip. Yesterday I got a phone call from his boss and found out that he really ran off to Hawaii with his secretary and doesn’t intend to come back.”

“Oh, my goodness, I’m so sorry,” Truthful says. “But what does that have to do with my grand-son and your truck?”

“Well, this morning he called and told me he was stranded because he got robbed of his wallet with all his credit cards and cash. He told me to sell his new F150 and send him the money. So I did.”

Maleny local Natalie Gauci is among 11 Sunshine Coast region creative arts workers to share in more than $65,000 in Regional Arts Development Funding (RADF).

The Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence Group for the Maleny Hinterland area recently visited the Maleny Historical Society Village at Maleny.

The 2007 Australian Idol winner received $5,000 for the development of her new album, ‘Pictures of Mars’.

Other successful applications included music and theatre development as well as a diverse range of screen and interdisciplinary projects.

Podcasting was a popular developmental area with two projects, ‘an adaption of A Girl’s Guide to War’ and pilot series, ‘That old queer’, netting more than $14,000 in funding.

Natalie who was also a contestant in The Voice in 2020 said the album was in the early development stages and would comprise nine songs for release over a four-month period alongside an online TV show and launch event in Caloundra on 28 February.

“I will be writing, producing, arranging and recording these new songs at my home studio in Maleny, where I hope to create music that brings joy and lifts people’s spirits,” Ms Gauci said Council holds three RADF grant rounds each year with the latest round of applications attracting 22 diverse applications..

During their visit a donation of $500 towards their local projects. It was given as a way of recognising their contribution to helping eliminate / reducing domestic and family violence.

The donation was jointly given by the Maleny Cultural Historical Society along with The Maleny Horseless Carriages Club, and the Maleny Mens Shed.

The Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence Group is self funded to receive such donations helps the group to continue their work within our community.

Farewell lovely Lady “Until we meet again” Maleny has lost another of its Matriarch of one of Maleny’s pioneering families, Enid Joyce Cox. Enid was born on the 21st December 1920 in Eumundi and passed-on the 22nd January, 2021 As a child growing up in the depression, the highlight of the year was a trip to Gympie to do the Christmas shopping and to receive a treat from a spring activated mechanical donkey at Cullinan’s Store.

The journey was made in the buggy pulled by to draft horses.

Enid said it was a heavenly day full of surprises and we thought it was just marvellous.

Be Aware of Scams The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Scamwatch has warned scammers continue to use the spread of COVID-19 to take advantage of people across Australia.

Scamwatch received over 5,170 scam reports mentioning coronavirus in 2020, with more than $6.2 million in reported losses since the outbreak of the pandemic.

However, investment scams were the worst overall for the amount of money Australians lost in 2020, costing them more than $66.4 million.

Dating and romance scams were also costly taking $37.2 million from Australians.

December was the worst month for losses from scams, with Australians losing more than $22 million in a single month.

Enid and her late husband, Alf had eleven children. After Alf returned from WW11 the couple share farmed on Enid’s parents farm on Maleny-Kenilworth Road.

People over the age of 65 lost the most to scammers in 2020, suffering more than $37.6 million in losses.

Enid was never scared of hard work and the farm was brought into proper shape and began to ourish.

Another talent that Enid acquired was how to bake the perfect sponge cake, for which she was well renowned.

Her secret, according to herself was that the our had to be “properly sifted - no short cuts.”

Maleny District locals gathered at the Witta Recreation Club grounds on February 6th to watch a live screening of the funeral from Gregson + Weights chapel in Caloundra.

Following the service friends remained to talk over past good times, and some not so good over a cuppa and some scones.

Pride of Workmanship Award Melody Fanti from IGA Maleny couldn't make it to our Pride of Workmanship Awards night last year due to an IGA event the same evening.

Eventually, we all found a day to present the award to Melody, who runs the IGA Bakery Dept.

She was stoked to get recognition for what she sees as just doing her job. Owen Gray, store manager, said that Melody stood out because she always considers the entire store and not just her department.

In 1916 the McLeans purchased Vetter’s Bakery and after adding the top storey this became their home and business.When the local farmers were visiting town, there was nowhere for them to have a cup of tea. Frances realised this need, and thus McLeans Café and Bakery was established.

An ef cient refrigeration system was installed which enabled the café to offer ice-creams, soft drinks, milkshakes, small goods, fruit and vegetables as well as a wide variety of baked goods and wedding and birthday cakes.

In 1940 Andrew and Frances retired to Caloundra. They kept ownership of the building and leased the business to E.S. Millinerand in 1949 to Kosnos Freeleagus. Unfortunately the 1951 re destroyed the café and the School of Arts.

The vacant block of land was purchased by Wally Burnett.
