There’s a Dragon in my Garden Knitfest is an exciting weekend Yarn & Fibre Arts Festival to be held on July 3rd and 4th, 2021. It is a celebration of bre arts and crafts, embracing the whole local community.

The theme for this year is “There’s a Dragon in my Garden”.

This is a magical festival for families to discover new skills, talents and creativity using bre arts including knitting, crochet, basket weaving, spinning and weaving, felting and lots more.

You can ride the Free Yarnbombed bus as it travels up and down the Festival Precinct so you can get a window seat to see all the attractions and the best yarnbombing. The precinct stretches from Macadamia Drive, Maleny near the new police station through Maple Street to Knitfest Central

returning via Coral Street which is situated in the Maleny State School Auditorium where there will be various workshops and a trade show. On the Saturday the MACG will be holding workshop in Maleny Showgrounds The bus will then return to the start point via Coral Street and Myrtle Street.

Knitfest is a COVID friendly event and will be following Covid safety procedures during the event.

Nominations open for Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme community reference group

The Sunshine Council is in the process of preparing a new planning scheme and it is expected to be completed in 2024. The planning scheme is a regulatory document used to guide and manage future growth and development within our local government area.

The community members are intended to represent a range of interests and demographics to ensure we form a group that is representative and inclusive of our diverse Sunshine Coast population.

The main purpose of the Community Reference Group will be to provide input and guidance to council about the best ways to engage with the community during preparation of the new planning scheme

Barry Watts should not get parole!

Lynda and Barry Kingi, the grief-stricken parents of Sian Kingi are appealing to all Queenslanders to help them keep the monster who murdered their daughter behind bars.

Sian Kingi was abducted in Noosa, raped and murdered by Watts, with the help of his then-wife Valmae Beck, on November 27, 1987.

Lynda and Barry Kingi have launched a petition calling for the Queensland Parole Board to reject Barrie Watts' bid for parole.’

Her body was found a week later, 15km away in bushland. This was one of the most horri c crimes in Queensland history.

The signatures would go to the parole board and the Australian government.

Watts pleaded not guilty to all charges but was convicted by the court process. It was not until 2009 whilst being interviewed about the disappearance of Helen Mary Feeney, last seen in

Former police commissioner Bob Atkinson, who investigated and arrested Watts said he believed Watts would still be a danger to the public.

Keeping Watts in custody is not necessarily about people being further punished it is about.ensuring that he cannot repeat his actions and take another innocent life to satisfy his lusts.

The LNP have – as on all matters of birth, death and life – allowed a “conscience” vote on this legislation.

As such, I am free to vote as I choose, not bound by any particular stance the party might have.

I have spent considerable time trying to decide whether I should vote as per my conscience or on behalf of the collective (or majority) conscience of the electorate I represent. What has caused me considerable anguish this time is that I believe my conscience requires me to vote differently than the electorate might want me to.

Those who know me personally, know I place signi cant value on the sanctity of life. I have a strong personal faith in God and believe that life has special intrinsic value regardless of how young, old, healthy, sick, able-bodied or disabled that life might be. As such, on matters of birth and death, I feel strongly that I should vote in favour of “life” and against laws such as these.

Having said that, I also strongly believe that no one should die in pain or distress. Nor should a family member watch a loved one experience such. I have. Like every one of you who has contacted me to date. Which is why I am disappointed

these laws were introduced during National Palliative Care Week and at a time the palliative care sector remains underfunded and misunderstood. The head of the Australian Medical Association was even more strident saying: “I’ve always thought voluntary assisted dying is a sign of hopelessness that you shouldn’t get with a properly funded and supported palliative care service.”

I know my personal views are not shared by many in the electorate of Glass House. I, therefore, strongly encourage locals to make submissions to the Parliamentary Committee’s inquiry into the legislation.

Be be careful when purchasing second hand vehicles from backyard sales As motor vehicle traders struggle to restock second hand car yards and trouble with the importation of new cars and parts during the coronavirus pandemic there has been a rise in the number of backyard operators selling cars to the unsuspecting public, mainly through Facebook or Gumtree as a private seller.

Insured vehicles that cost more to repair than they are worth – are being written off by the insurance companies and sold as “parts”.

Back yard car dealers are purchasing these cars and because second-hand cars are scarce repairing them then the cars are pushed out and returned to the road.

In Queensland a backyard mechanic requires only a roadworthy certi cate and a vehicle ID check to register a written-off vehicle, with no physical inspection on the quality of the work or parts.

On Sunday July 4th between 10.30am and 11.45am at the Maleny Community Centre, 23 Maple Street, Maleny you can gather with lovers of crime writing for a much-anticipated Sunday Morning Talking Crime, a stimulating morning with four acclaimed crime authors.

An Italian Artist Auctioned Off an ‘Invisible Sculpture’ for $18,300. It’s Made Literally of Nothing.

Abstract art is a work that asks you to activate the power of the imagination. Personally I like art to be more life-like and I can either see it or feel it.

Well known true crime author, podcaster and journalist Matt Condon will guide the conversation with Emma Viskic, an award winning crime ction author, Hedley Thomas, Walkley Award winning investigative journalist, podcaster and author and Ben Hobson, author of Snake Island, an impressive novel from a rising star of Australian crime ction.

Italian sculptor Salvatore Garau said of his sculpture that you don’t see it but it exists; it is made of air and spirit.

With this sculpture you really just tap a square and call that a sculpture. The sculptor said the art work is a vacuum and is nothing more than a space full of energy, Invisible photo and even if we empty it and of “Buddha in there is nothing left it still Contemplation.” exists in the mind of its creator and this is what the buyer paid for.

This talk will be all the more interesting with the announcement of the death of Gary Dubois who died in the Maryborough Correctional Centre about 4.30am on Monday June 7th.

He was due to give evidence at a re-newed inquest into the re bombing of the Whisky Au Go Go which killed 15 people on the 8th March 1973.

The buyer was given a certi cate of authenticity along with the instruction that the work must be exhibited in a private house in roughly a ve-byve foot space free of obstruction.

Along with Vincent O’Dempsey, Dubois was also involved in the death of Barbara McCulkin and her two daughters, Vicki and Leanne in January 1974. These deaths were allegedly committed about the perceived knowledge of the Whisky Au Go Go nightclub re bombing.

The 1958 Meadows Frisky Sprint Prototype was designed by Gordon Bedson and Keith Peckmore.

It had a berglass body, tube chassis, 34bhp 3cyl 592cc rear engine and weighed just 690lbs.

The Frisky Sprint never made it into full production because of nancial problems.

This vehicle was eventually destined to become the Australian Zeta Sports which was built by Lightburn Engineering produced in South Australia between 1963 to 1965.

Fewer than 400 vehicles were produced.

The designer went on to design Stirling Moss's famous 500cc Formula Three car.

Porterhouse steaks with onion gravy

4 x 200g porterhouse steaks, fat trimmed 500g “microwave in a bag” mini white potatoes

1.

2 carrots, peeled, cut into batons

Heat a lightly oiled chargrill pan or barbecue on high. Cook steaks for 3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Rest for 5 minutes.

2.Meanwhile, cook potatoes in packet for 4 to 5 minutes on HIGH (100%) or until tender, adding carrots, broccolini and peas in a microwave safe container for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender.

1 bunch broccolini, trimmed

3.In a non-stick frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until softened. In a jug, prepare gravy according to packet instructions. Add gravy to pan, season and stir to combine. Simmer for 1 minute or until heated through.

1 cup frozen peas 1 tsp olive oil

4. Serve steaks with gravy and vegetables. Sprinkle with parsley, to serve.

1 brown onion, thinly sliced

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions Becoming a parent is a very important point in a persons life, it should be much more than a quickie and then the abandonment of the resulting young child.

A large number of young children, both male and female are not taught anything about respect or their civil responsibilities.

No longer can schools effectively castigate their students for bad or poor behaviour and thus the bad behaviour is simply made repetitive for those students.

Too often parents try to become. young peoples “best friends” and thus there too is no sense of discipline metered out for poor behaviour..

With the daily news reports continuing to bring advice of continuous serious youth crimes such as serious assaults, arson, stealing of vehicles, break and enter of houses and businesses - all committed by children, many aged under 10 years of age it would appear that Queensland Government has given up on trying to nd solutions on youth crime.

Their next thought is to simply raise the age of criminal responsibility so that those offences do not appear on the states criminal data.

Areas such as Townsville, Gold Coast, Redcliffe, Caboolture and Logan being continually “held to ransom” by gangs of young youth. Nobody is prepared to stand up and deal with the problem as kids as young as 10 terrorise neighbourhoods.

When caught and placed before the Court to be dealt with they merely get a slap on the wrist and then saddle up the next night to do exactly the same thing.

The Youth Justice Act needs an immediate change so that breach of bail as an offence applies to indictable offences and to all offences against person and property.

Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged!

It is long past time that Governments merely talking about addressing youth crime is suf cient. There needs to be some requirement for parents and guardians to take responsibility for their young children.

“Son, go get your mother…!”

In the last 40 odd years there have been major changes in our society and how our society behaves. There is an enormous hidden cost to society for these youth crimes and it is a cost to all of us.

The only thing about youth crime is that there are no easy answers and no single solution to the problem. Simply locking up the young is not the answer. Everything and all suggestions should be seriously considered.

Mr. W. Gregor and Mr. M. McCarthy approached the Undersecretary to the Department of Public Instruction, Mr. J. G. Anderson to have a teacher made available. As a result of this approach the establishment of the Blackall Range Provisional school in 1886 was made. It was rst sited in a small building near home of the late Joseph McCarthy at Wootha.

The teacher was Mr. William Verrant and 12 students were enrolled. The rst semblance of the school in the near present town of Maleny was in a slab hut owned by Mr. W. Livingston. He was one of the original selectors.

He also had some teaching knowledge.

From this modest slab hut he taught not only his own children, but other settlers children from the area.

At the same time approaches were made to the Education

Butter Factory was established in 1904 it became obvious that the school should be built near the factory site.

The Lands Department made a grant of about ve acres and it was decided to site the school in North Maleny. This area being considered the most promising area for children of school age.

A move was begun to have a more central school in the district and in 1912 land for the schools of was acquired on a site originally selected by Mr John Pitt and brought from Mr E.J. Dixon to £35.

The school was called the Maleny Township State School. This name was changed to Maleny State School in 1915.

Later with the coming of more settles to the district another approach was made to the Department and a provisional school called Maleny was opened July 1897. This school was situated just a few hundred yards from Mr Livingstone's original slab hut.

The school committee was asked to pay one fth of the cost.

Mr Dixon donated land at Obi Obi Creek for a swimming pool. This is the pool situated within the Maleny show grounds today. This pool is still popular with children today.

He was appointed teacher and remained so until 1909 when he sold his properly unless the district. For a short time the school worked in conjunction with the Teutoberg School, later, in 1926 it was renamed the Witta State School. Both schools sharing half-time the teacher.

When the Teutoberg School was only two years old it enjoyed an important occasion with an of cial visit from Mr. William McGreggor, Governor of Queensland.

The site for the rst school was in Cedar Street, where the Girl Guides Hut is today. The school open its doors on April 22, 1913 as Maleny Township School enrolling 36 pupils on the rst day with numbers reaching 52 a week later.

years ago and is still a very active member of the Maleny community.

Conondale area just north west of Maleny and it became the Eleman Creek State School.

The original building for the Maleny North school was closed down and sold at the end of 1913. Later, North Maleny school was established in the area. It was opened on February 27, 1922.

Another small school that served the area over a period of time was the Curramore State School. It would be dif cult to think about the history of schools in the Maleny area without mentioning a school mistress called Miss Roberts.

This school was closed down in 1960 and the building was transported to Kenilworth.

Miss Clare Kaeshagen was the rst teacher. It was one of a number of small schools opened throughout the district during the various stages of development.

It remained until closed in 1953.

The schools all became integrated within the Maleny State School with the advent of school transport services.

Another one of the small schools was the Witta State school, originally known as the Teutoberg State School. This school was opened in 1892. It was subsequently closed in 1974.

Today, that same building is now in Kenilworth where it is used as the local scout den.

From about 1940 onwards it became the goal of the educationally minded citizens to secure a secondary part for the Maleny State School. Eventually, the Department of Education agreed to provide for future development of the present school. A site in Bunya Street was purchased. This is the site of the present Maleny State School.

She was transferred to the Curramore State School in 1936 and taught there until the school was closed. Miss Roberts married local dairy farmer, Bill Newton and she stayed living in the Maleny area. Today, aged in her 90’s she still resides in Maleny and is well known throughout the community.

In 1953 with the required number of pupils wishing to enter high school seemingly assured, a committee representing all district bodies petitioned the then Minister of Education Mr G. Devries and the Director of education Mr Watkin to press the claim for high school facilities.

The Secondary

Department open for classes in February, 1954 with 23 students.

The head teacher was Mr. H. Hughes and the school was of cially opened by Mr Devries in October 1954.

In 1957 a start was made on the erection of the high school wing and in 1958 it was occupied by the students.

The primary schools new move to the site in time for the 1959 year with the of cial opening by the then Premier of Queensland, Mr. F. Nicklin, later Sir Francis nickel and on March 7, 1957.

The golden jubilee of the school was celebrated in 1963 and was marked by gala day in the school grounds.

The Secondary school remained co-located with the Maleny State School until 1987 when the Secondary Department became the Maleny State High School and shifted to a new site in Bunya Street, Maleny where it remains today.

Today there are approximately 750 students from the Maleny District attending this high school.

Many of those students travel by bus from outlying parts of the the district.

Apart from other important elds of education the Maleny High School students can also complete studies in agricultural studies and breed their own herd of stud cattle.

In 2021 the students attended Beef Australia 2021 in Rockhampton where they gained exposure to important messages about the agricultural supply chain and their place within it.

This program aims to educate primary and secondary students about the origins of their food and bre and raise the pro le of careers available in agriculture while showcasing the Australian cattle industry.

Improperly installed, operated, or maintained, wood burning replaces are potential sources of house res.

It is important to ensure that the chimney is clean and free of creosote.

Creosote is a highly combustible fuel that burns intensely. It is a aky, black deposit which is easily removed by brushing with a chimney brush.

Burn only seasoned, not “green wood”. Burning “green wood” creates more soot and creosote.

Regularly remove ashes from the wood stove into a metal container. Check to see that the chimney cap is in good repair, and is structurally sound.

Even with the proper precautions, a home heating re can still occur. Extreme care should be taken, especially where younger people are in the area to ensure that do not get burnt or otherwise injured.

Maleny RFB is part of Rural Fire Service Queensland. The Maleny Group covers over 100 sq kilometres and have 3 re ghting trucks and 1 Command Vehicle. The group also assists other volunteer groups.

Secure your vehicle number plates

Police from around the The Sunshine Coast have received over 400 complaints of number plate thefts last calendar year and this year 148 have so far been reported.

Number plate theft is of great concern to police, as they are being used by people to commit more serious crimes such as robbery, break and enter and stealing offences.

What many people do not realise is that offenders use stolen number plates in an attempt to make their identi cation more dif cult.

Local police would like all motorists to look at ways of preventing the theft of number plates from their vehicles.

One-way screws are available free of charge from most Police Stations or can also be purchased from auto retailers.

The removal tools for these screws are restricted for sale and are also available at local police stations for use.

Would you leave your credit card around complete with security number? Why give your vehicle identi cation to a criminal? It is important for motorists to help reduce crime by securing your vehicle number plates with screws that cannot be removed with conventional tools.

Winter Vegetables for Subtropical Areas

There are vegetables that do well in subtropical areas such as southeast Queensland. The vegetables that ourish in these areas are: Peas - Shallots - Turnips - Radishes Spinach - Broccoli - Broad beans - Lettuce Cauli owers - Onions - Spring onions It is suggested that you site your garden a position that receives about six hours of sun, away from trees that will rob the vegies of nutrients and water.

Soil preparation is vital. For every square metre spread 300g organic fertiliser (Organic Extra or Organic Link), 100g gypsum, spread 5cm of compost/manure over and fork in.

This is another reason for shopping local!

Baroon Pocket - Pre Dam

This is what Baroon Pocket looked like pre the dam being constructed. The red arrow indicates approximately where the present boat ramp is from the Maleny side. Baroon Pocket Dam was built across Obi Obi Creek and completed in 1989 and when full holds approximately 61,000 ML. It was a joint project of the Maroochy and Caloundra Shire Councils to supply water locally.
