With the problems at the present time one can go back to February, 1940 It was hoped that the City Electric Light C would link up Maleny with Woodford as part of the rural electricity scheme.

The Maleny area ultimately would feed electricity from Nambour and before the end of February Montville was also linked to the Nambour Electricity Sub Station. This brought electricity to the Sunshine Coast hinterland for the rst time.

The City Electric Light Company originally operated from Fortitude Valley in Brisbane and supplied electricity to Brisbane City and for the cities tramway and electric buses.

The rst practical use of electricity was for lighting in the Government Printing Of ce in George Street in April 1883.

The Queensland Attorney-General, Shannon Fentiman has announced that she has signed a Notice of Appeal into the sentence of the man jailed for killing Katherine Leadbetter and her partner Matthew Field when he struck them with a stolen car in January 2021. Ms Leadbetter was pregnant with the couples baby at the time of this incident.

Ms Leadbetter was the daughter of long time residents of Maleny. She had attended both the Maleny schools.

The uninjured teen driver of the stolen vehicle involved in this incident ed the scene but was later caught and detained by a nearby resident after he tried to steal another car nearby.

During the trial the court was shown distressing footage showing the teen's erratic and dangerous driving in the 20 minutes leading up to the crash as well as the moment of impact with the pedestrians from a number of angles.

During the trial the court was told that the teen's "reckless" and "dangerous" driving had simply been been to "satisfy his own sel sh needs”. “This put other road users and others at risk — that risk on this occasion came to pass with the deaths of Mr Field, Ms Leadbetter and their unborn child.”

He was sentenced following his conviction as a juvenile earlier in June, 2022. He received a 10-year sentence for more than a dozen charges including two counts of manslaughter. The judge, Justice Martin Burns ordered that he be released from custody after serving just six years.

In handing down his sentence the Judge said; “This is a case of gross negligence and must surely fall within the worst category of such cases."

Following complaints by the parents of the victims that the ruling was labelled "grossly inadequate" a petition to appeal the sentence garnered more than 46,000 signatures.

In making the complaint the families of Katherine Leadbetters Ms Leadbetter and Mr Field said the sixParents year jail term fell short of what the community expected, and they were serving their own "life sentence”.

The families continued to say that their life sentence started on Australia Day last year, the day of the collision, will never end".

Landsborough Road to get repairs

Finally….some good news for our roads! Nine months after we reported the road surface literally sliding down the hill on the “climb” out of Landsborough, work will commence shortly to repair Maleny-Landsborough Road. Works will occur Sunday to Thursday nights and should take about a week.

I know there are plenty of other roads that need desperate attention - Mt Mee Road from D’Aguilar to Dayboro, Maleny-Kenilworth Road at Cambroon and the Montville Road to name just three.

I’ll keep pestering TMR until they’re xed too.

Cambroon home destroyed by re

A home to two at Cambroon was destroyed by re on Tuesday June 7th at about 11p.m. Two people living in the house had self evacuated uninjured before re crews arrived.

Fire ghters worked for ve hours to control the blaze. The dwelling was destroyed by the re.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokesman said nine crews, including urban and rural re ghter trucks, were called to the Maleny Kenilworth Rd home about 11.20pm Tuesday. The re spokesperson said that the house was already engulfed in ames on their arrival.

A police spokesperson said that the re is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

With the colder weather now upon us it is a time when house res are more apparent.

Most fatal res are preventable. By taking some basic precautions it is possible to minimise the risk of a re in your home.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions What is the price of a life? The cause of death on our roads and who it effects is not discriminatory.

Matthew Field and his pregnant partner Kate Leadbetter, who grew up in Maleny and is the daughter of a wellknown local family, were killed when 17-year-old ran a red light in a stolen car, crashing into a truck in Redlands on January 26th, 2021. At the time the driver of the vehicle was the drunk and high. Following the collision the offender then ed the scene and attempted to steal another car before being apprehended.

Matthew Field and his partner Kate Leadbetter were doing nothing more than walking their dogs on a footpath.

Many families unfortunately know all too well how it feels to have a close relative or friend killed in just the blink of an eye due to some driver’s inattention or wanton disregard for the law of the land.

The teen who took the lives of young parents-to-be when the stolen car he was driving crashed into them while he was high, drunk and on a suspended licence has been jailed for 10 years, but he will be released after he has served six years behind bars.

Justice Burns in this case found that there were special circumstances and instead of having to serve the whole prison time ordered that he serve only 60 per cent, taking into account the defendant’s remorse, plea of guilty, and steps taken to rehabilitate.

How can that be when the teen was already on bail for driving offences, including evade police from a previous incident.

But, in a cruel twist, he will be released on the sixth anniversary of the horror incident.

The offender in this instance can then resume his life, but for the parents and friends of the deceased persons they can never resume theirs. Their lives have ceased as they previously knew it and will never be the same again. Only parents and close friends know the real grief and sorrow that the teenager had caused. Where is the justice in this.

The teen offender is now completing his Grade 12 education in detention, along with a number of other courses to assist with nding employment when he is released.

These are bene ts that he most likely would not have found outside of prison.

The son is astounded. “But, Dad!” he protests, “You've been a good Catholic all you life! You're delirious. It's a priest ye be wanting now, not a minister.”

The old man looks up at him and says, “Son, please. It's me last request. Get a minister for me!”

“But, Dad,” cries the son, “Ye raised me a good Catholic. You've been a good Catholic all your life. Ye don't want a minister at a time like this!”

The old man manages to croak out the words, “Son, if you respect me and love me as a father, you'll go out and get me a Protestant minister right now.”

The son relents and goes out and gets the minister. They come back to the house, and the minister goes upstairs and converts him.

As the minister is leaving the house, he passes Father O'Malley coming quickly through the door. The minister stares solemnly into the eyes of the priest. “I'm afraid you're too late, Father,” he says. “He's a Protestant now.”

Father O'Malley rushes up the steps and bursts into the old man's room. “Pat! Pat! Why did ye do it?” he cries. “ You were such a good Catholic! We went to St. Mary's together! You were there when I performed my rst mass! Why in the world would ye do such a thing like this?”

“Well,” the old man says as he looks up at his dear friend. “I gured if somebody had to go, it was better one of *them* than one of *us*.”

The 190’s better become known as “The Swinging 60’s” The 1960’s was really the decade that begun the “new technological age”, the moon landings were a technological marvel for that period. It was also a period of hot rods, pin up girls, and old-school rocking tunes and who could forget “The Beatles” and student protests and the beginning of the push for equal women’s rights. n the 1960s, the restless rst wave of "babyis now recognised as one of boomers" were just learning to spread their adult the de ning moments of the wings; to be able to vote, and, importantly for feminist movement in some, to drink in Queensland pubs. At this time Australia. drinking age and voting age was 21 years.

The 1960’s saw the beginning of a battle for civil liberties in Queensland

Everyone remembers where they were on the 23rd November, 1963 when news was broadcast of the murder of the President of the United States of America, President John F. Kennedy. Remembering also where they were when they received that letter advising if they had been conscripted into the army or not to go to Vietnam. march between the Queensland University into the city. During the three hour demonstration police and marchers swapped punches in scenes of mob protest which saw some 114 protestors arrested in scenes never before seen in Brisbane. The marchers were demonstrating against Queensland Government regulations in respect to the right to free speech and public protesting and the protection of civil liberties.

These protests continued well into the 1970’s on a much broader scale. Those protests were soon added by baby boomers who were at the forefront

of the anti-conscription protests of the 1960’ and 1970’s. The issues surrounding the Vietnam War and conscription divided Australian society.

Once arrested the protesters were taken to the city watch-house where there were a lot of lawyers and people sympathetic to the movement who bailed the protesters out. Much of the bail money was put up by the Trade Unions. Most protesters did not turn up for court and had their bail forfeited. For many it was a time to assert some authority and “have a bit of fun” at the same time.

In March 1963 Queen Elizabeth once again visited Queensland.

In June 1964 the British pop group “The Beatles arrived in Brisbane and played four concerts played at Festival Hall over two nights (29 & 30 June 1964.

The Gold Coast, a coastal city in the State of Queensland, is a metropolitan region south of Brisbane. This area saw a signi cant boom in popularity which grew starting in the 1960s A sell-out audience of 5000, including The Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith and his wife Lady May attended the concert.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to actually hear the concert because of the noise from the crowd, but no body appeared to care. It was enough to just be there.

The 1960’s saw the beginning of a battle for civil liberties in Queensland

Queenslanders listened as the rst man walked on the moon. The 1960s was one of the most tumultuous and divisive decades in world history – including in Queensland and Australia.

Australia Airlines (TAA) Lockheed Electra carrying 43 passengers and six crew on board Flight 408, the last Sydney to Brisbane ight for the day.

The hijacker, Alex Hildebrandt, wielded a sawn-off .22 calibre ri e, as well as a bomb: two sticks of gelignite attached to a battery. He demanded to be own to Singapore.

Hildebrandt was sentenced in Queensland to three years in jail for attempted murder, then because the aircraft was over New South Wales seven years in a New South Wales jaIl for attempting to destroy an aircraft.

Queenslanders take fondly to the 1960s TV series, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. That show captured, not only Queenslands imagination but the whole country's imagination. It also showcased Australia to the world. The programme shows some typical adventures that Sonny (Garry Pankhurst) and Skippy shared in Waratah National Park.

The series attracted a who's who of Australian actors as guest stars.

Queenslanders watched Australian television broadcasts of the live coverage of the Apollo II moon landing on the morning of July 16, Apollo 11.

Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins sit atop another Saturn V at Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. Everyone now remembers that famous broadcast from the moon; "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Then as he actually stood on the moon surface Neil Armstrong said, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

Also in 1961 the West Indies cricket team toured Australia for the 1960–61 season under the captaincy of Frank Worrell. Both Worrell and the Australian captain, Richie Benaud, encouraged their teams to play attacking cricket. The rst Test of the ve match series ended in a dramatic tie, the rst of only two instances in Test cricket.

The famous ABC commentator, Alan McGilvray left the ground at four o’clock to return home to Sydney, saying that the match was over. He later admitted that that was the worst decision of his life. Most likely the winning card came from Australian bowler, Alan Davidson who took 6 wickets — 11 for the match.

Classic Australian Movie Time!

The Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club will be showing the multi-award winning classic Australian docudrama movies, The Back of Beyond and The Last Mail from Birdsville (each approx. 1 hour in length) on Sunday July 3rd at 2.30pm at the Maleny Community Centre.

The movie was released in early 1950 and was seen by thousands of Australians and when Queen Elizabeth 2nd saw the movie, she awarded the truck driver, Tom Kruse an MBE.

John Heyer's 1950's Aussie adventure lm following Tom Kruse along the Birdsville Track was the winner of the Absolute Grand Prize at the 1954 Venice International Film Festival and nominated for a 1955 BAFTA lm award for Best Documentary Film.

The second doco is from 2000 when Tom Kruse drove the last mail from Birdsville in his original restored truck followed by 400 people from Birdsville to Adelaide. He carried over 7000 letters.’

Dolly’s Dream was set up in memory of Amy “Dolly” Everett, aged 14 years who took her life after an extended period of bullying and cyberbullying.

Dolly left behind her parents Tick and Kate and sister Meg, who are now focused on using the money that has been kindly donated by he community to help prevent other families from going through the same devastating experience.

Outside the Maleny Sawmill in the Blackall Range Sawmill workers prepare felled logs for the Maleny Sawmill in 1894.

The landscape around the town was dotted with huge tree stumps and pockets of regrowth and virgin scrub.
