Maleny Show Society Amenities Upgrade Cr Winston Johnston advises that the Maleny Showgrounds Amenities Upgrade is proceeding well, despite the weather we have experienced.

Works are expected to be completed by April 30th in time for the Maleny Show.

Construction on Radditz Bridge, Conondale continues

Bridge Creek Road, Maleny

Of the new Raddatz bridge has started and is expected to be completed in June 2021, weather and site conditions permitting.

Floodway Renewal Bridge Creek Road where it meets with Wells Road Maleny the end of it serviceable life and has been identi ed for renewal.

In mid March, the construction site received signi cant rainfall which has delayed the ability for works to be undertaken.

Further to this and due to the high volume of similar works being undertaken throughout Southeast Queensland, the contractor has been signi cantly delayed in the procurement of the piling and bridge deck components for the new bridge.

The existing concrete structure will be replaced with a new concrete structure to improve road users and ease of future maintenance by council.

To progress the works as quickly and safely as possible, the Eastern Mary River Road will continue to be closed to through traf c at Raddatz bridge until early June 2021, weather and site conditions permitting.

The new oodway will be distracted in the same location as existing oodlight delivered unnecessary clearing and disturbance.

Some undergrowth and vegetation immediately provide suitable room construction of a site access track.

Signage will be in place to advise road users of the temporary road closure.

Fauna spotter catches will be on site during excavation and clearing to ensure the well-being of any wildlife.

The detour will continue to be along Eastern Mary River Road and Maleny-Kenilworth Road via Cambroon or Conondale. There will be no through traf c along East Mary River Road at the bridge location.

Personnel will be on site from 6:30 am and construction work will be between 7 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Property access will remain unobstructed for the duration of the project and council make every effort to minimise construction.

Sunshine Coast Kids Only Library Card Sunshine Coast Libraries have collaborated with local author and illustrator Philip Bunting to create a new Kids Only library membership card. The card features the Pythonidae Bookmunchii Sunnycoastius, aka the Common Bookeater Python.

Traf c management measures will be in place for the duration of construction. Travel across the oodway will be permitted with the construction of a temporary single lane side track. Some delays will be expected.

Library membership is free! Bring your children in for a visit over the April school holidays to join up to get their very own Kids Only card. The cards have been created with the rm belief that every child needs a Library card.

Please allow for extra travel time during this period.

CCTV and Bluetooth Technology for Road Safety The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will soon begin works to install closed circuit television (CCTV) and Bluetooth technology at various locations across the Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast region as part of the jointly funded $293 million Road Safety Program, with the Australian Government contributing an overwhelming $226.7 million across the State.

"TMR has undertaken formal speed limit reviews on two sections of Maleny–Kenilworth Road.

As a result of the speed limit reviews, the 80km/h zone will be reduced to 70km/h from the existing 60km/h zone near Dixon Avenue at Maleny to near Sidney Lane at Witta. This reduction is over an approximate 3.2km length of the road.

In addition, a short section of the 80km/h zone on Maleny–

Kenilworth Road on the eastern side of Conondale will be reduced, with the 60km/h zone in the township of Conondale to be extended west to the intersection with Meadow Lane.

This speed limit reductions were endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Speed Management Committee.

This committee included representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Council and TMR. Works are scheduled to start during the week commencing 29 March 2021 and will take approximately three days to complete, weather and conditions permitting. TMR's contractor will complete the works between

Public transport we need on the Sunshine Coast - Heavy RAIL on the Camcos corridor “A message from local Federal Member for Fisher, Mr. Andrew Wallace” No-one could deny that public transport on the Sunshine Coast is a mess. People are voting with their feet and while the buses and trains that we have are less than half full, our local roads and the

This project is in line with the present scheme to duplicate the North Coast Line between Beerburrum and Landsborough stations (around 20km in length) as well as station upgrades, new park ‘n’ ride facilities and new rail passing loops between Landsborough and Nambour.

This scheme is also well behind the “needby” date.

The humble tyre is so important to the safety to your vehicle and they have changes in design over the years. It has come from “rounded” wedges or timber to steel rimmed wheels to the pneumatic tyre.

Recipes from Jeremi Roasted lamb leg with potatoes and mint sals

2.5kg bone-in lamb leg

Preheat oven to 170˚C.

6 sebago potatoes (or other potatoes), scrubbed and cut into wedges

In a food processor combine 5 garlic cloves, thyme, rosemary, oregano and half the oil. Season. Process until nely chopped. Spread over lamb.

1 cup (250ml) chicken stock

Place lamb in a roasting dish lined with paper. Scatter around potatoes and garlic bulbs. Add stock, cover with foil and roast for 1 hour. Remove the foil, drizzle potatoes with remaining olive oil and roast uncovered for a further 40 minutes or until lamb is cooked through and potatoes are crisp.

Ingredients

½ bunch at-leaf parsley, leaves picked and nely chopped 1 bunch mint, leaves picked and chopped 1/3 cup (80ml) grapeseed oil

Finely chop remaining garlic clove and combine with the parsley, mint, grapeseed oil and vinegar. Season.

2 tbs chardonnay vinegar (or white wine vinegar)

Serve the lamb and potatoes with mint salsa and micro mint.

Around 5.30pm, hikers noti ed police after coming across the man, who they believed to be confused and aged in his 70s.

A search between the top waterfall and entrance involving police of cers and the Dog Squad into the night has failed to locate the unknown man.

The man is described as Caucasian, around 160cm in height, wearing a grey hat and shorts.

Anyone who may have seen the man or knowns of anyone hiking in this area matching the description is urged to contact police immediately.

- No Bulls##t” The Little Rocky Creek Boy Scout’s Camp at Landsborough near Glasshouse Mountains once contained an old timber slab and iron settler’s hut. A bush re destroyed it few years ago- but its tragic-comic story lives on.

Only one day after Brisbane suffered another lockdown which caused extensive nancial damage to many Queensland small businesses as a result of healthcare workers working in the Princess Alexander Hospital Covid Infection Ward becoming infected with Covid from an Aussie returning from overseas.

Truthful says that the settler who built it was found in the bedroom one day, his head split with an axe. Top of the list of suspects was his wife, who was a bad-tempered shrew, but she had vanished. The mystery was never solved.

From time to time travellers camped in the abandoned hut, until word got around that it was haunted by a ghostly female gure dressed in a long nightgown. A teamster and his Irish-born wife, who were either ignorant of the story or very brave, moved into the hut soon after.

When the teamster was away the wife stayed there alone, apparently untroubled by the ghost.

A sloppy administration error saw dozens of nurses turned away from receiving the vaccine on April 2nd at the Royal Women’s Hospital. How is it that arrangements for immunising their own staff are apparently beyond their own administrative ability.

One cold winter evening a swagman (who knew the hut’s reputation but fancied himself a match for any ghost) came to the hut and, not knowing it was occupied, entered and settled down on his blanket. To his horror a gure appeared at the bedroom door- a woman in a long nightgown. The swaggie was terri ed and his rst reaction was to run, but his legs refused to move. Then the gure spoke (with an Irish accent and barely disguised mirth): ‘I’ll put no curse on you, man, if you go and chop all the wood that’s outside the door’.

This is in spite of in October 2018 the Queensland Government hired ANOTHER ONE HUNDRED bureaucrats for the Health Department to sort out problems there.

The swagman did as he was told. He had a large pile of wood chopped before his courage returned and he decided he had had enough. He pitched the axe into a hollow tree and headed back to the hut to get his belongings. Inside, he looked over his shoulder and saw the night-gowned gure again, this time standing in the doorway he had just entered. Something looked different about it and when it spoke the Irish lilt was gone. ‘Where's the axe? Where's the axe?’ the gure screamed at him.

This was also in spite of, at the time not being ale to supply much needed equipment.

Also, the government were not paying the suppliers in a timely manner for the equipment that they did supply.

Would it not have been better to have hired extra front line staff to ensure that the health requirements of Queenslanders were attended to instead of the apparent mal-administration of the Queensland Health Department by over paid middle ranked bureaucrats who continue to make below average decisions about the health needs of Queenslanders.

‘What does it matter,’ the swagman replied, ‘I’ve chopped all the bloody wood!’ He tossed a bottle at the gure- it passed straight through.

‘I put a curse on you for seven days,’ screamed the shrewish spectre.

That was too much for the swaggie, who fainted and fell to the oor.

He woke next morning to nd the teamster’s wife bending over him.

‘Begorra,’ she said with her soft Irish burr, ‘what a ne job you did with the rewood. Get up man and I'll make you a hearty breakfast.'

When the swagman stood up he felt something long, strange and hairy in his pants leg. He felt inside and discovered the result of the ghost’s curse- he had grown a tail.

This is not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on an administration computer system that is still not working effectively.

The story goes that he took to the hills and was not seen for the next seven days, after which he returned looking normal but swearing never to go near Rocky Creek again in his life.

So all of you ex scouts who attended the Rocky Creek Scout Camp, you just don’t know how lucky you were to leave the place unaffected!

Sam Visits RFD Base

lim has been in the workshop for the past few days getting radiator repairs and various adjustments/things done.

Sam visited the RFDS Base at Charleville where he met Flight Nurse Diane Dowrick who showed him around the base which commenced operations in 1943.

I owe a massive thanks to Brendan Humphreys for xing slim and to Dalby Radiator Works who xed the radiator.

After having spent a very enjoyable week in beautiful Roma Town I’m off to Charleville.

Sam and Slim join Roma Easter Parade Sam and Slim were invited to join in the Roma Easter Parade on Saturday April 3rd. He was there for the day doing donations before camping up for the night and leaving Sunday morning Towards Charleville.

Whilst in Roma Sam and Slim made history as the rst time the drag strip at Roma has ever had a tractor on it. Slim set a cracking pace at 45km/h on the strip, much to the amusement of the dragsters doing 150mph.

ANZAC DAY MALENY 2121 Following cancellation in 2020 the Maleny District 2021 ANZAC Day commemoration events will go ahead as "normal", with dawn services to resume and the march to be held along Maple Street, Maleny commencing at the intersection of Fig Street at 10.15a.m. culminating at the Maleny RSL Hall for the Memorial Service commencing at 11a.m.

This will be proceeded by a service at the Maleny Soldier’s Hospital at 9.45a.m. “Lest We Forget”

ANZAC’s still on duty With ANZAC day just around the corner it is timely to remember the ANZACS from all wars who put their lives on hold and went off to “ ght to keep Australia strong”.

There is a saying that “Old Diggers don’t die they continue to stand ready to keep Australia strong and Free!

During the recent wet weather this Digger at the Taree RSL War Memorial at Fotheringham Park did not let the ooding deter him from his duty.

Vision is to “To Save and Display Maleny's History Some Maleny history with Harvey Bryce Landsborough was originally known as Mellum Creek, the locality was rst taken up for farm selections in 1871. The rudimentary settlement was used as a stopping point for Cobb and Co coaches making the run to the Gympie gold elds.

Street Light comes to Maleny

The magic of turning on street lighting in Queensland rst happened in 1882 in Queen Street, Brisbane. People gathered to marvel at bright white light.

Some Queensland towns like Croydon in the far north did not have access to electricity until 1980. Others like Richmond, Julia Creek and Boulia had to wait

until the 1950’s to access electricity whilst others like Boyne Island waited until 1960 and even today some pastoral areas are still powered by diesel generators.

When Landsborough township became the centre of the Landsborough Shire Council and after the council was set up in 1912 the town areas were beginning to become established.

It was not until the late 1930’s that electricity came to Maleny. Until this farms had their own generators and they were used primarily for running their milking plants and some lighting.

During this time NO wagon actually damaged the light.

As a consequence the Landsborough Shire Council decided that these areas needed street lighting and so they proceeded to erect town lighting.

The City Electric Light Company Construction Gang had been pushing through the countryside erecting the North Coast 33kV feeder from Brisbane, via Woodford, Maleny and Montville to Nambour.

Not the ef cient system that we have today, but a gas system based on acetylene gas.

The original gas lamp can now be seen at the Maleny Historical Museum.

The rst such light was located in Landsborough in the centre of Landsborough township. It was provided and lit by Landsborough and Maleny businessman. John Tytherleigh.

In 1888, Tamworth became the rst town in Australia to supply electricity for street lighting., It then began to supply electricity to businesses and dwellings.

It was soon followed by a similar light for Maleny. This light was erected in Maple Street in front of Cooke Park.

Ironically, the rest of the world had only just began to use electricity in 1882. Brisbane was the rst city in Australia to use electricity commercially and that was in 1883 in the Government Printing Of ce.

At that time Cooke Park was a cattle and calf sale yard. At this time there were up to 32 wagon teams using the area to deliver,

COMBINED PROBUS CLUB OF MALENY Inc.

On March 24 the Club had their AGM and elected the committee for the coming year. The people elected are Barbara Hays, President – Alison Frew, Vice President – Anne, Boyle, Secretary – Susan Myring, Treasurer.

Additional Committee members elected are Di Begbie, John Dalziel, John Gyzemyter, Stan McCallum.

After the AGM formalities we had our guest speaker Dr Gary Bacon AM give us a wonderful animated talk about the life of a not well known but eminent Australian, a public servant, surveyor, explorer, and member of Qld Parliament, Sir Augustus Charles Gregory (1819-1905).

The Club meets at the Uniting Church, Maleny Landsborough Road, Maleny, on the fourth Wednesday of every month except January and December. Members meet from 9.30 am and the meeting commences at 10.00 am.

Approximately 20 minutes is devoted to Club business and reporting to members after which the guest speaker is introduced.

The speakers normally speak for about 45 min. on a wide variety of topics which is then followed by a substantial Morning Tea. Throughout the year the Club organises various trips and outings which may include luncheons, excursions to places of interest and occasionally trips away.

Night-time feral animal surveyin Sunshine Coast Council advises residents in the areas of Kenilworth, Conondale and Cambroon that council of cers will be performing routine night-time feral animal surveying in these areas between Monday, April 19 and Wednesday, April 21.

Report sightings of feral animals in your area to council. Council of cers are available to assist with education and action for landowners to minimise the impact of feral animals on their property.

Data collected from these surveys is used to inform and assess the effectiveness of council’s feral animal control programs and to assist with targeting problem areas.

Sunshine Coast Residents told “Australian Flag is an Eyesore” Who could believe that an elderly Queensland couple living on the Sunshine Coast have been told that the Australian Flag is an “eyesore”.

Julie and Vaughan McLeod are proud Aussies who have raised the nation’s ag in the backyard of their Sunshine Coast unit every morning since the ‘90s.

The McLeods claim they received permission to y the ag when they moved into their unit complex in 1997, but now cannot nd the actual permission.

But the body corporate has said no approval was granted and as the couple have been unable to provide written evidence it existed, it must be taken down.

Mrs. Julie McLeod said that this decision was is “insult” to my husbands service to Australia as a member of the RAAF. “I can’t understand it myself, because the agpole is out the back and they can hardly see it from their units and it’s been here for 24 years

Now the couple is locked in a Mr.. McLeod said, “I see the ag bitter feud with their neighbours as part of my culture, I served in over an act of the Air Force under patriotism after ——————————————————— Mrs Julie McLeod said; that ag and anything a neighbour that seems complained that “The ag is not going disrespectful to the the ag was an anywhere”. ag causes me “eyesore.”

It is amazing just how small this world is and who you see on your travels.

Maleny’s Rubatuba is an accordiontuba multicultural folk duo and we often see their music as they busk in Maple Street, Maleny.

Rubatuba performed in the colourful Albert Street walkthrough on Wednesday, the 7th of April for Brisbane's City Sounds Pop up Series.

“It gave us a great opportunity to play and interact closer to the people walking to and fro. The acoustics were ideal for our acoustic instruments.”

Françoise Smith is a classically trained pianist and Steven John has a Liberal Arts Degree in music performance (USA) and has played in international symphony and opera orchestras.

Believed to be about 1950 What a difference 70 years makes!

This photo shows the intersection of Beech, Maple & Cedar Streets, Maleny with the original hospital on the hill. The original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital served the community until a new facility was built and of cially opened on 17 October 1987.

A couple of cows on the road as there often were in the days long gone. The person on the left is thought to be Ted Kelk who was the grade 8 teacher at the Maleny State School.

Oh what a difference 70 years makes. Just imagine cows grazing contentedly “on the road” at this intersection in 2021.
