Community Bene t Fund Six hinterland community groups have bene ted big from the latest Gambling Community Bene t Fund round, with local not-for- pro t organisations sharing in a bumper $114,141 Glass House electorate allocation For the Maleny area the Maleny District Sport and Rec Club received $9,350 has been awarded to produce a business plan for their future.

“The MDSRC have come up with some fantastic ideas over the years, and they provide a lot of support to other community groups.

I am keen to see what they come up with this time.”

Also the Hinterland Music Club received $6,800 to purchase audio equipment and stage stools.

The GCBF provides sizeable grants to Queensland not-for-pro t community organisations with revenue sourced from gaming taxes.

Maleny Scout group celebrates

On SATURDAY 22 MARCH 2014 the Maleny Scout Group celebrated 88 years of scouting in Maleny at the Maleny Historical Museum. The photo below showed many past scouts who joined the group over the years.

They had fond memories of Scouting in Maleny, led by Troop Leader, Mr. Vic Waddell (Emu). He went on to become Field Commissioner for Queensland.

The photo below shows many former Maleny Scouts who went on to become valuable Maleny citizens and the “backbone” of the community.

Maleny and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. is an incorporated body representing the business community since 1986. It is now known as Maleny Commerce.

“Smiley” the movie with Colin Petersen

Colin Petersen was a long timed Maleny resident who had his “brush with fame” in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Today he considers himself a Malenyite/Redclif an resident. In 1956 he played an typical Aussie mischievous lad. This wasn’t his only movie character as he also appeared in “The Scamp”, a 1957 British drama lm directed by Wolf Rilla and starring Richard Attenborough. He them appeared in “A Cry from the Streets” in 1958. Contemporary critics had high hopes for ten-year-old Colin Petersen.

Smiley is a 1956 comedy lm directed by Anthony Kimmins and starring Colin Petersen. It was based on the 1945 novel of the same name by Moore Raymond who co-wrote the lm with Kimmins.

It tells the story of a young Australian boy who is determined to buy a bicycle for four pounds, and along the way he gets into many misadventures. Let us hear the story as told by Colin.

miley Greevins is a cheeky, mischievous, imaginative little boy who lives in the small town of Murrumbilla in the Australian outback.

It is an American-British lm based on the 1945 novel of the same name written by Moore Raymond. The lm was made in 1956 and is set in Australia.

His father Bill is a poor drover who is often away from home. Much to the exasperation of his overworked wife, Ma Greevins, Bill is also very fond of the drink.

The Director, Anthony Kimmins wanted to nd himself a tough Aussie boy with a smiling face.

Smiley is determined to buy himself a push bike and so he takes on odd jobs in an effort to save up enough money. But Smiley always seems to get caught up in some sort of misadventure.

After interviewing over 2000 boys to play the part of Smiley it was well known local house painter, Colin Petersen, then aged 9, who was nally chosen to play the role of Smiley. Colin said that he got the gig by chance. He had had an of cial audition at the New Farm Cinema in Brisbane. He missed out.

After returning to the cinema later in the day to see what was happening he had a chance meeting with the director, Anthony Kimmins. Colin smiled as he said, “Kimmins was more impressed with the way I was dressed when I returned dressed as a typical 9 year old boy instead of in my best clothes.

Smiley is a classic Australian lm that will delight audiences of all ages.

Colin said that lming started in late October 1956, with the township of Murrumbilla being created on an estate at Camden Park. Filming nished just eight weeks later. Post production work was done at Pagewood Studios in Sydney.

Pagewood Studios had been established in 1930’s as The Nations Film Studios but had just nished a major upgrade to take advantage of the introduction of television into Australia. The Studios were state of the art for that time.

Camden Park was the property of the McArthur Family. The McArthur’s introduced Merino Sheep to

Australia were co-stars in the movie, actors such as Chips Rafferty, Leonard Thiele, Bud Tingwell and many others who went on to lead long careers in the Film and Television Industry.

This led to a further audition in Sydney which resulted in me getting the part.

“Smiley” the movie with Colin Petersen

Colin remembers that many of the buildings used for lming were already established on the property however some shopfronts and the hotel front was built to use for lming.

He continued, “It was necessary to bring several truckloads of soil in to cover a roadway on the property because it was bitumen and a dirt road was necessary for lming.”

The lm is often described as unusually frank in its depictions of Australian life of the time, especially for a children’s lm.

This lm was made for a British company and directed by British writer-director Anthony Kimmins, using mostly American money.

Twentieth Century Fox partnered with Alexander Korda’s London Films as a way of ‘thawing’ their frozen cash assets in Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia’s Government still had a wartime restriction on exporting American dollars at the time.

Colin Peterson later moved to Britain and enjoyed a successful career as a child actor and musician. He appeared in a movie alongside Sir Ralph Richardson.

Colin said, “In 1958 was when I got

a hell of a shock because acting had become my life. My mother suddenly announced, ‘ We’re not doing any more lms Colin, it’s time you went back to school”.

He had attended Humpybong State School at about the same time as the Gibb Brothers and this is where Colin got his introduction to the drums as a member of the marching band. This connection led to Colin becoming the rst non family member to join the Bee Gees as their drummer. He remained with the group until 1969.

During his time in Britain he was part of Music Royalty which included the Beatles, LuLu, the Bee Gees where he was initially an equal partner in the group until he had a disagreement with the group’s manager, Robert Stigwood who was was an Australianborn British-resident music entrepreneur and lm producer.

He returned to Australia in the 1974 and moved to Sydney and worked as a house painter. He subsequently moved to Maleny where he continued as a house painter.

Council unveiled a 70-metre monument connecting Redcliffe Parade and Sutton Street, and renamed the alley ‘Bee Gees Way’ Redcliffe.

From time to time Petersen performs in a tribute show that takes the audience through the highlights of the Bee Gees interspersed with anecdotes from his own time with the band. The tribute band is called the Bee Gees - Best of the Bee Gees.

They just don’t make music like that anymore!.

What are Hard Wax Oils?

Hard Wax Oil After Care

Hard Wax Oils are a blend of natural oils and waxes which are designed to protect internal timber surfaces. The wax content keeps the oil suspended in the surface of the wood for longer. Unlike lm coatings, the pores of the timber are lled, and the timber pores are ‘saturated’ which will allow no room for anything else.

Ongoing maintenance will depend on how the surface is treated so to extend the life of your coating it is important to care for it correctly. Good care and maintenance are the key to keeping your surfaces looking amazing and it is essential to use the correct cleaning products. It is a myth that ingredients such as eucalyptus, citrus etc are good for cleaning timber. They will in fact help with weakening the coating and reduce the durability and sheen. So please do not use any citrus, eucalyptus, ammonia or caustic based cleaners on your beautifully nished surfaces and oors.

Under normal circumstances 2 thin coats is all that is required. Anything more than this will result in over application and the coating will be weaker not stronger.

A timber surface that is treated with Hard Wax Oil is resistant to water and dirt because of the saturation.

The wax component forms a hard layer, and this layer gets harder over the years meaning maintenance is required less frequently.

To apply the oil to oors, the preferred method is with a micro bre short nap roller and a paint tray. Do not use sponge, mohair or lambswool rollers or speed brushes as these hold too much oil and over application will occur In contrast to other nishes such as polyurethane or lacquers, timber surfaces that are nished with Hard Wax Oil can breathe freely and the coat of wax remains elastic so it will not crack, peel, ake, or blister.

Fiddes Cleaning products are a non-abrasive, rinse free formulation that require no rinsing and will dry smear free.

For timber ooring Fiddes Wood Floor Cleaner is the way to go. This is a concentrated product which will maintain the surface and keep your ooring looking just lovely! Dilute 2 capfuls into 4 litres of water and mop those oors.

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is extremely easy to spot repair.

Mask around the scratched boards with painters’ tape, lightly sand with a ne paper and apply a coat of Hard Wax Oil.

Queensland Crime Stoppers recognise Maleny’s Marsha Marsha Lindenthal of Maleny has over a long period of time completed many hours as a volunteer to a number of local community groups, including Crime Stoppers.

Marsha has become heavily involved with many Maleny community groups, most notably through her interest in photography.

She is regularly seen at groups such as Pattemore House, Maleny Precinct, Maleny Show, With Festival GENERAL MEETING … 26th Usual time 915am for a along with many other groups where she provides 930am start. Maleny SES looking Maleny Catholic Church celebrates 100 years for volunteers The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maleny reached a

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies.

By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, ood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

milestone birthday in 2024 celebrating 100 years in the community. The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maleny opened and was blessed on 4 February, 1924 . It was built on land donated by a parishioner at the time, Patrick Daley.

It was a timber and tin building cost 860 pounds to build.

The Daily family was from Irish pastoralists who settled on the Range in the late 1800s.

The original church building was replaced with a larger brick building in 1974.

As part of this celebration they have commissioned a book, “‘The Heart on the Hill’ written by author and historian Elizabeth Caffery.

Following a Mass celebrated by Most Rev Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of the Brisbane Archdiocese and Maleny Parish Priest, Rev Joshua Whitehead and former Maleny Priest, Fr Kevin Smith a plaque commemorating the centenary was unveiled, dedicated, and blessed by Archbishop Coleridge.

The Mass concluded with the placement of a time capsule to be opened in the year 2049.

Maleny Visitor Information Centre The Maleny Visitor Information Centre is a not for pro t, long-standing, independent community service, run by volunteers. The Centre is a ticket selling agency for Maleny Film Society movie screenings along with a range of quality souvenirs and postcards, with a distinctively Maleny avour along with information about places and events around the area.

The Centre is situated at 2/23 Maple Street, Maleny. It is open 7 days a week between 9.30am-4.00pm.

Queensland Police administrators either “just do not care or have no idea about crime”.

Juvenile crime is out of control in Queensland and the government has no idea as to how to get it back under control except to throw more money at it and then wipe their hands of the matter. The government and the justice system has become soft on offenders in the name of social justice.

There is no easy x, but the road that we are presently travelling is not working. High speed chases are not allowed and in the name of safety this most likely was a reasonable decision, but another method of intercepting those criminal driven vehicles must be available to stop those vehicles. This is the very reason why the control precision immobilisation technique was introduced.

On the Gold Coast a police senior of cer, Senior Sergeant Arron Ottaway allowed of cers to ram the stolen Volkswagen being driven dangerously on major roads. As a result he has been stood down and investigated for allowing this action. This could result in him being sacked or having his rank downgraded.

Tyre-de ating devices, or stingers, were used to de ate the tyres in an attempt to stop the vehicle but the driver continued to drive dangerously for a further 18 minutes on on the vehicles rims before being rammed by a police vehicle in a practised manoeuvre called the PIT ramming action.

It must be remembered that frontline police have to make splitsecond decisions regularly to preserve the safety of community members. When they do make those decisions they should be supported.

One of the problems with modern policing in Queensland, and it started after the Fitzgerald Inquiry is that too many police reached very senior positions having progressed their policing career through of ce positions and as a result mostly they have very little actual policing experience. Often those of cers would be placed in a “relieving street position” for a short period of time so that they can put on their job applications that they do have “street experience”.

This then restricts their thinking when as senior of cers they have to make major decisions effecting the operations of street experienced police. To them doing the paper work is more important than actually doing the job. Hence we now have the situation where crime, especially with juveniles is out of control.

It is time for people to take responsibility for their actions and if they cant then accept the consequences..

Truthful Jones tells us that his uncle Mick from Ireland visited him in Maleny. Uncle Mick took Mum and their son Pat to Brisbane for the rst time. Mum had an appointment with a doctor, so the two men went off for a walk along Queen Street.

As they passed a building, the door opened automatically. They decided to go in, having to dodge as the doors tried to close before they were properly inside.

“Gosh, Dad, I hope we can get back out again,” said Pat. While in the auditorium, they watched as a woman, old and wrinkled, hobbled past. She made her way to a marble wall and a section of it mysteriously slid open. The woman stepped in and the wall closed behind her.

Dad and Pat stood watching as a counter above the door climbed from 0 to 20. It paused for a few moments and then counted back down to 0. There was a ‘ding’, the wall opened and a beautiful, spry young woman stepped out, walking brightly out of the building.

Dad stood, looking slackjawed at his son, Pat . Then he twigged!

“Son, go get your mother…! She needs to go into that room and come out just the same as that last lady!”

Moral: You can never put anything past those relatives who visited Truthful from Ireland can you!

DYING WITHOUT A WILL: WHAT HAPPENS? With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny In the last two issues I have been discussing the requirements of a valid Will. I thought it would be a good opportunity to continue the train of thought with what could happen should you die without a valid will. If a person dies without a valid Will, that person is said to have died “intestate”.

Dying without a valid will or ‘intestate’ can be very detrimental to your loved ones and also very expensive. Not only have you given away your ability to decide how your estate is to be distributed and to whom but you also run the risk of the costs of administering your estate increasing drastically and your estate being distributed to unintended bene ciaries.

One example of an unintended bene ciary is an estranged spouse from whom the deceased was not formally divorced. That estranged spouse will share in the deceased’s estate under the Queensland intestacy rules despite the deceased and the estranged spouse not being in a relationship at the time of death.

The Succession Act sets out the rules to be applied in situations of intestacy. Here are some examples: •

If you are married/de facto with no children, your spouse takes 100%;

•

If you are married/de facto with one child your spouse takes the rst $150,000.00 plus the household contents. Assets after this are divided equally between the spouse and the child

•

If you are married/de facto with two or more children your spouse takes the rst $150,000.00 plus the household contents.

Assets after this are divided 1/3 for the spouse and 2/3 equally between the children.

It happens just so quickly Recently it was nearly curtains for me… 10pm driving back to camp, I’d just been at Dominos In Coolalinga getting my tea. It, might’ve been some good karma paying me back because I’d just got a homeless fella a pizza (a $10 one but still) anyways. I’d just got driving barely south of Coolalinga and some muppet with high beams and spotlights full on, I could barely see him, then after ashing back he turned them off and he was practically… right… in…front…of…. Me, in my lane on the wrong side of the highway, going full tilt.

It’s a duel lane carriageway, I just thought he was on the closest side of his side but nope, wrong side, I swerved so I went didn’t have a head on, it’s bucketing down. I held it on the road and kept on going, rang the cops… hopefully they nd him before a road train comes along and cleans that clown up… far out…

I’ve seen some stupid sh*t but that’s shaken me up properly… if I wasn’t paying attention… if I’d been looking the other way… I don’t wanna think about what would’ve happened but it wouldn’t have been a positive outcome…. Streuth.

“McLean’s Maleny Bakery and Cafe” burnt down, 1951” The Maleny Bakery and Cafe building was destroyed by re in Maleny on the 26th May 1951 at about 7a.m.. At the time it was owned by Cos Freelegas. The Maleny School of Arts, the building that was situated on the left of the cafe was also burnt to the ground.

Luckily, a sudden wind change at the height of the re saved a number of other Maple Street businesses. Just when the re ghters’ task seemed hopeless, the strong wind changed from west to the east and dropped considerably.
