Council gets award for internet Cable

unshine Coast Council has been awarded the Australian Achievement of the Year Award at the MAV Technology Awards for Excellence for the delivery of its International Broadband Submarine Cable project.

The MAV Technology Awards for Excellence recognise outstanding team and individual efforts in the use of technology to improve service delivery and efficiency to local government organisations or communities.

Award judges commended council for delivering an amazing project and noted that the cable would provide Queensland’s first direct international data and telecommunications connection to global markets.

Council facilitated the connection of a new international submarine cable to Maroochydore in March, following an international submarine cable contract agreed between Sunshine Coast Council and RTI Connectivity Pty Ltd (RTI-C).

This award reinforces the council’s position at the forefront of thinking outside the square, securing new revenue sources and pursuing opportunities to generate economic and employment growth as a major

dividend for our residents, supporting our aspiration to be Australia’s healthy, smart, creative region.

Sunshine Coast Council shared the top gong with Alpine Shire, a Victorian Regional Council. The two projects will now be Australian entries in the 2021 LOLA International Awards for Excellence, competing with local government entries from New Zealand, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom and Belgium.

The winner will be announced in November 2021 at the LOLA Conference in Florida, USA. International Broadband Submarine Cable project fast facts: The submarine Cable project includes the installation of a 550km undersea fibre optic cable which will connect the Sunshine Coast to the

7000km Japan-GuamAustralia (JGA) submarine cable.

The cable, which is laid on or buried under the sea floor, connects to the cable landing station adjacent to the new Maroochydore City Centre project.

The Sunshine Coast International Broadband Network project will help stimulate local business, generate new investment, and improve telecommunications diversity to Australia’s east coast.

The cable will help to future proof the Sunshine Coast’s telecommunications capacity and increase our region’s smart city capability by ensuring access to important data networks.

The Sunshine Coast International Broadband Submarine Cable Project is forecast to deliver up to 864 new jobs and stimulate $927 million in new investment in Queensland.

Council will continue to play a facilitation and partnership role to ensure the opportunities from the cable are realised.

New walking trail paves way for environmental discovery Come and explore the new trails opening at the Maleny Community Precinct wetland, accessible off Porters Lane.

With more than two kilometres of trails, the network offers an easy walk through the wetlands with the chance to spot dozens of native bird species, frogs and other waterloving wildlife.

I would like to acknowledged the efforts of former local councillor Jenny McKay and retiring Unitywater chairman Jim Soorley in bringing the trails to fruition.

Around Division 5 with Councillor Winston Johnston Sunshine Coast Council will undertake the resurfacing of Rangers Road, Balmoral Ridge between November 9th and 20th weather permitting. Restricted on-street parking will be in place between the hours of 7am and 5pm. Parking vehicles on a bicycle path, footpath, shared path, dividing strip or a nature strip may result in a parking infringement being issued in accordance with the Council’s Local Laws.

Residents will be able to access their homes however delays may occur while machinery is in operation. On-street parking will not be available while works are in progress.

Due to the nature of these works, vehicle movement in the area will be restricted when works commence. In most cases, properties will only be

inaccessible for a maximum of 15 minutes. If required, immediate access to your property by emergency vehicles will be arranged.

Local traffic will be able to access their properties during working hours as indicated above and traffic management measures will be in place to ensure safe conditions for all pedestrians and motorists. The final phase of works to be conducted, includes the reinstatement of road surface line marking and signage. These activities may be conducted outside of normal business hours in the interests of reducing traffic congestion.

Road safety is critical to Council’s operations and we ask you to please drive safely and cautiously whilst these works are underway.

When only the best will do!

Ingredients 4 x 200g porterhouse steaks, fat trimmed 500g “microwave in a bag” mini white potatoes 2 carrots, peeled, cut into batons 1 bunch broccolini, trimmed 1 cup frozen peas 1 tsp olive oil 1 brown onion, thinly sliced 29g packet traditional gravy mix Chopped parsley, to serve.

Heat a lightly oiled chargrill pan or barbecue on high.

Cook steaks for 3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Rest for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook potatoes in packet for 4 to 5 minutes on HIGH (100%) or until tender, adding carrots, broccolini and peas in a microwave safe container for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender In a non-stick frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat.

Add onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until softened.

In a jug, prepare gravy according to packet instructions.

Add gravy to pan, season and stir to combine. Simmer for 1 minute or until heated through Serve steaks with gravy and vegetables. Sprinkle with parsley, to serve.

Tips to make it a good meal!

Use any type of steak for this recipe – eye fillet, scotch and rump would also work well.

Substitute potatoes with shoestring or sweet potato fries Any vegetables of choice would work well and can be microwaved – snow peas, green beans, broccoli, and squash, to name a few.

How Television has changed since it first came to Australia What most people don’t realise it that television was first developed in the 1920’s when James Logie Baird demonstrated it in 1926, however it was actually first thought about and proved possible in 1884 by a German student Paul Nipkow who developed a spinning disk that could project pictures that appeared to be moving because of the spinning action.

The word television was first used at the Paris World Fair in 1900. In 1911 the first pictures using Nipkow’s principal were transmitted via electrical wires, however the pictures could not be made to move as with the spinning disk but were static.

Television today is in almost every house and with most houses having not one or two of the latest television sets but numerous.

Each person now needs their own television set so as not to miss their own particular show.

Today’s viewers of television want all the thrills and features of digital television in 3D and with the latest in sound and extra wide screens.

The full time transmission of television in Australia was being considered as far back as the mis 1940’s, but it was not until the then upcoming 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne that serious consideration was given to introducing it to Australia.

It was July 1956 that television broadcasts were first introduced in both Sydney and Melbourne with the first official program being on TCN 9 Sydney on September 16th. The ABC began transmissions on November 5th in Sydney.

Whilst Sydney and Melbourne first saw television in 1956 it was

not until 1959 that Brisbane first received its first regular broadcasts. It was not until well into the 1960’s that regional towns throughout Australia began to receive their first broadcasts.

It was the mid to late 1960’s that saw television sets begin to be found in most Australian homes.

Through television defining incidents such as the assassination of the US President Kennedy quickly were brought to the attention of people all around the world. No longer was the average individual shielded from bad news as that news was broadcast directly into homes on a daily basis.

Today, that same type of information is broadcast into homes as it happens.

Whilst colour television was first broadcast in Australia in 1967 it was not until 1975 that regular broadcasts became the order of the day.

It was the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games that really pushed for some speed to ensure television came to Australia.

American television programming had a huge impact not only on American culture, but the culture of Australia and the world.

Many have dubbed the 1950s as the Golden Age of Television.

Right from the start television made itself felt in world politics.

Political speeches were shorter and politicians and commentators alike began to think and speak in “sound bites” that fit the medium.

It was virtually the end of “The Political Stump speeches” where the rollicking stump speeches would typically contain boasts, jokes, or insults directed at opponents.

Many of the politicians of the time were very adapt at drawing local crowds to “stump speeches”. This is now a political talent lost.

What we watched on Television!

Initially many of the programs that were broadcast on television were offshoots of popular radio serials and shows.

One of the most popular shows at the time was “Disneyland”. It had been used by Walt Disney at the time to promote “Disneyland” which was opened in 1955. It went on to become one of the longest running television shows through the many updates. In Australia it first ran on the ABC but went on to become a Sunday night staple show at 6.30am. It introduced many young child actors to viewers and they went on to a lifetime of acting.

It could be said to be still running today through the Disney Channel on payTV. As in America many of the shows for the then foundling television came from companies that were producing shows for radio, such was Crawford Productions. In Australia initially almost all television shows came from the USA. Crawford Productions, a brother and sister act soon became one of the major television productions in Australia, producing for that period high quality serials on a regular basis, serial such as “Homicide”, “Consider your Verdict” “Division 4” and many others.

Homicide became the template for a large number of Australian produced shows on television.

Homicide owes its existence to a radio predecessor, D24, which ran for 10 years on radio before the introduction of television These shows introduced faces who were to become household names

and to remain in the Australian entertainment industry for decades to come.

‘Many shows had social comment' episodes where a wide range of issues, such as youth gangs, hitch hiking, road safety. to name just a few were explored.

The style of these programs was very simplistic compared to the way that programs are filmed today.

Programs had a rough format to work with, lacking in sophistication and, with the barest of budgets, didn’t have much emphasis on production values.

Many shows, such as Bob Dwyers “Pick a Box” were simply converted from a radio program to television. Another Show, Theatre Royal was adapted from a live vaudeville theatre that had operated in Brisbane since 1881.

Between 1949 and 1959 it was the domain of George Wallace Snr and his son, George Wallace as comedians. It was in 1957 that George Wallace started televising the show on a Friday night on BTQ Channel 7.

Following its closure in 1959 the show as filmed in the BTQ 7 Studios at Mt Cootha. The show was broadcast in black & white.

The show came to an end in 1968 after George Wallace Jr. had a stroke ad was unable to continue on with the show.

Many of the stars of that show went on to become household names in the Queensland television scene.

Isn’t it amazing just how entertainment and television has changed in the last 50 years!

Maleny SES Volunteer group mourns the passing of Former Group Leader Lloyd Larney.

Lloyd was the inaugural Group Leader of the Maleny SES Group passed away peaceful surrounded by family on Saturday 24/10/20 at Erowal.

The Maleny SES Group was officially formed in February 1982. Lloyd was the inaugural Group Leader and continued in that role until September 2010, 28 Years.

During that time Lloyd was also an original member of a community group, Maleny Community Disaster Fund that donates funds to victims of disasters within the 4552 postcode area. This group was at the time formed by the Maleny Rotary Club.

During the time of his leadership he oversaw the acquisition of equipment including; Toyota Troop carrier, radios, Barramundi boat, mobile phone, Mobile HQ Caravan and trailers with equipment to allow us to perform our functions.

Lloyd was also closely involved in planning and building the present Headquarters of Maleny SES in the Maleny Showgrounds.

In 1993 after a serious accident at Witta Lloyd assisted in community fund raising to purchase important rescue equipment which included the Jaws of Life for the Auxiliary firefighters. This equipment was not being provided to the Maleny community in the then near future.

Also provided was a fully equipped SES traffic management trailer along with all the SES training required to safely operate it.

Lloyd is missed by all those that served with him in the State Emergency Service. Our thoughts are with his wife, Shirley and family, Michael and Kerry.

The barman is amazed, but gives the rabbit a pint of beer and a ham and cheese toastie.

The rabbit drinks the beer and eats the toastie. He then leaves.

In walks the rabbit and says, 'A pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie, please barman.'

The barman says, 'I'm sorry rabbit, old mate, old mucker, but we are right out of them Ham and Cheese Toasties.'

The rabbit looks aghast.

The following night the rabbit returns and again asks for a pint of beer, and a Ham and Cheese Toastie.

The crowd has quietened to almost a whisper, when the barman clears his throat nervously and says,

The barman, now intrigued by the rabbit and the extra drinkers in the pub, (because word gets round), gives the rabbit the pint and the Toastie. The rabbit consumes them and leaves.

'We do have a very nice Cheese and Onion Toastie.

The next night, the pub is packed.

In walks the rabbit and says, 'A pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie, please barman.'

The rabbit looks him in the eye and says, 'Are you sure I will like it.'

When he is cleaning down the now empty bar, he sees a small white form, floating above the bar.

The barman says, 'Who are you?

To which he is answered, 'I am the ghost of the rabbit that used to frequent your public house.'

The barman says, 'I remember you. You made me famous.

The crowd's bated breath is ear shatteringly silent.

The barman, with a roguish smile says, 'Do you think that I would let down one of my best friends. I know you'll love it.'

The crowd is hushed as the barman gives the rabbit his pint 'Ok,' says the rabbit, 'I'll have a and toastie, and then pint of beer burst into applause as This Week’s Special and a Cheese the rabbit wolfs them coming to a Pub near you! and Onion down.

Toastie.'

The next night there is standing room only in the pub.

One year later, in the now impoverished public house, the barman, (who has only served 4 drinks tonight, 3 of which were his), calls time.

Coaches have been laid on for the crowds of patrons attending.

The pub erupts with glee as the rabbit quaffs the beer and guzzles the toastie.

The barman is making more money in one week than he did all

He then waves to the crowd and leaves....

You would come in every night and have a pint of beer and a Ham and Cheese Toastie. Masses came to see you and this place was famous.'

The rabbit says, 'Yes I know.'

The barman said, 'I remember, on your last night we didn't have any Ham and Cheese Toasties. You had a Cheese and Onion one instead.'

The rabbit said, 'Yes, you promised me that I would love it.'

The barman said, 'You never came back, what happened?'

'I DIED', said the rabbit.

'NO!' said the barman. 'What from?'

After a short pause, the rabbit said …'Mixin-me-toasties'.

Police News Report Stolen Number Plates Police received three reports of stolen number plates on the Sunshine Coast Area over the night of October 15-16th.

Crimes of this nature are of great concern to the community, as stolen number plates are often used by offenders in attempts to make their identification more difficult while committing further offences. If your plates are stolen and not reported this could cause problems of identity for you. Offenders often look for cars of similar description as to the receiving vehicle to steal the plates from.

This year, there have been 339 number plate thefts reported in the Sunshine Coast Police District, with 16 of those incidents occurring in October.

One way to make your number plates more secure is to use one-way screws to prevent your number plates from being stolen. Oneway screws which cannot be removed with conventional tools.

The removal tools are only available at local police stations and are restricted for sale.

One-way screws are available for purchase from leading auto retailers, or you can drop into your local police station for further information to prevent number plate theft.

For a limited time, some local stations throughout the district have supplied of these one-way screws that will be distributed to the local community for free.

Owners are encouraged to regularly check their number plates and report any thefts to police immediately.

Don’t forget that Operation Spring Break, the state-wide road safety operation with the aim of stopping lives lost and serious traffic crashes and improving road safety over the busy school holiday period is presently underway and will continue into the first week of students returning to school. http://www.hinterlandgrapevine.com

An Old Codger’s Thoughts “Are we over governed?”

Do you think that Australia is over governed?

Australia has three levels of government, all of which create their own rules that effects decisions we make in our lives. It is often suggested that if we are not already in danger of becoming the world's most over-regulated country.

Ever since Federation claims have been made that Australia is over governed. It is suggested that Australia is on a par with the United States and Canada in respect to levels of government control.

The situation that Australia has with three distinct levels of Government, all with their distinct responsibilities could be an efficient method of providing Australian citizens with the services that are needed.

However, because of the way in which finances are distributed, mainly from the Federal government through the GST tax means that there have been extra lives of administration created to overview the distribution those taxes and how projects created with that money are overseen.

This situation allows a very damaging situation of the various levels of government “passing the buck” in respect to the non-provision of certain services or poor delivery of those services.

The extra administration often soaks up much of the funds allocated for projects.

Should there be a reduction in the levels of government from three to two with more distinct boundaries of responsibility could be a more efficient manner of government. It could also save a lot of taxpayers money.

This would allow either a lower rate of taxation or provision of increased service levels with less taxation sped.

Not only being more efficient, two distinct levels of government would allow a more standard set of rules.

With community members now being more mobile shifting interstate should be more fluent, for example, similar education and health standards where ever a person resided.

There is good reason to believe that stronger regional governance within the federal system will deliver longterm social, economic and environmental benefits and more transparency in governmental decisions.

Maybe it is a question that should be seriously considered.

All About Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club Serge Doumergue was out with his 1925 Citroen 5CV on Saturday October 3rd with it on display at the Montville Pop up markets at 130 to 132 Main Street Montville.

There is no wonder that he received some offers to buy it, but he says, “she is not for sale.”

The Citroën Type C was a light car made by the French Citroën car company between 1922 and 1926 with almost 83,000 units being made.

The first colour in which it was made was yellow,(a pale " grapefruit " yellow) which earned it the first nickname “petite citron“ (little lemon).

This car accounted for nearly half of Citroen's sales and became the first European popular automobile.

The Maleny Handmade Markets will be held at the Maleny Community Centre on the 7th and 8th November. between 8a.m. and 3p.m. This is a great opportunity to Shop Local for Maleny - just in time for Christmas shopping!

This is a great opportune its to find out just a bit more about the areas history and find out about other groups that are active in the area which might provide new interests and new hobbies.

On Remembrance Day Please Remember!

Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year.

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards fighting to protect the nation.

Sustainable Living & Gardens With Grahame Staines

Sustainable Living & Aquaponics STORING When it comes to growing potatoes, it's quite easy, but when it comes to storing them, well that has been our nemesis.

Storing them here in Maleny Queensland, means the difference between growing potatoes for our needs all year round or not.

Having the ability to store them for 2-3 months is that difference.

Our latest experiment has been to store them in an old timber chest and cover them with pine chip.

POTATOES

After curing our potatoes between two hessian bags for 14 days, we have successfully stored them this way for 2 months without any deterioration.

Concerns were raised when we started this experiment about the potatoes taking on the pine chip taste, fortunately that did not occur.

We realise that the time of year will alter these results, especially through summer, however this is an experiment and as such, time will tell. As of now, our home grown potatoes have not wrinkled or sprouted and they are as good as the day we covered them.

Avoid storing potatoes in plastic because it leads to moisture retention.

Storage of your potatoes in a cool, humid, and dark place (45 to 50 F is the ideal temperature range will help to increase the length of time that storage of potatoes can be maintained whilst keeping them in good eating condition.

Why should I eat potatoes?

Potatoes are one of the most popular vegetables throughout the world.

They an be a very healthy part of a meal as long as you don’t you start noshing into greasy French fries, chips and all the processed junk and salt that goes with them.

When?

Entry to Mooloolaba approximately 1950 It was a fuel and food stop at the Caloundra intersection on the Bruce Highway about 1930.

When the township was first surveyed it was known as Mooloolah Heads, deriving its name from the river, which was named from an Aboriginal word perhaps referring to the schnapper fish plentiful in its waters (the 'mulu') or the 'mullu', the red-bellied black snake. The change of name to Mooloolaba came about in 1920, to distinguish the nascent township from the developing township of Mooloolah.

Mooloolaba's beaches and river boating were particularly patronised by Buderim people, who had the choice of the Wharemoane boarding house or cottages along the river. The surf life-saving club began in 1922.

The main drawback at the time was access, with a boggy, sandy headland track along the coast.
