Vaccination is our best defence and our only way forward out of this COVID-19 pandemic. As the National Cabinet has set out in its four stage National Plan, the more people that get vaccinated, the sooner we will get back to normal life. We are now receiving one million doses of P zer vaccines per week so this should speed up the number of vaccines given.

As of 15 July 2021 9,806,809 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Australia. We anticipate reaching 10 million vaccinations by the end of the weekend.

Be Cautious of Internet Scams Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details, Stay Smart Online says.

The scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare bene ts and claims.

Almost three quarters of our over 70s are protected, and more than 58 per cent of over 50s are protected. In total, more than one third of the eligible population aged over 16 are now protected.

If you click on the link in the email you are taken a replica of the real myGov website. You’ll note the URL includes ‘.net’ instead of ‘.gov.au’, which is an indication the website is not a legitimate Australian Government domain!

All 2,566 Commonwealth Residential Aged Care Facilities have received both a rst and second dose and more than 50% of NDIS participants in residential accommodation have received at least one dose.

If you input your login details you are directed to also enter your secret security question and answer, before you’re taken to the fake Medicare website to input your bank account details.

These emails and web pages feature myGov and Medicare design and branding, making them appear legitimate.

The rst 1 million doses in Australia took 45 days to administer, while the second million doses took 20 days.

However, the roll out is now speeding up fast, and the most recent two million doses took 8 and 7 days to administer respectively. This is only going to get faster in the coming weeks.

Remember, clicking on the link and sharing your details gives these scammers access to your personal information, which they then use to steal your money and identity!

Another interesting fact is that according to the ACCC’s latest Targeting Scams report released recently Australians lost over $851 million to scams in 2020, a record amount, as scammers took advantage of the pandemic to con unsuspecting people.

Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre purchases a “Sleepbus” The Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre recently revealed that 769 people within the Maroochydore community were living rough on the streets.

second Sleepbus would be purchased thus allowing for separate short term sleeping accommodation for men and women.

Each pod will have mattresses and pillows, they also have a little TV, and a USB port so they can plug in their iPads or mobile phones to charge up.

As a result it was decided in July 2021 that the Maroochy Community would fund a Sleepbus to provide safe, temporary, overnight accommodation to people sleeping rough.

In total the buses will sleep 40 each night. The sleepbuses, are built in Melbourne, and each will provide 20 pod beds with toilets.

The busses also contain an animal ior pet pods as well as onboard storage space for the storing of belongings. These are located under the bus.

Sleepbusses are not a permanent solution for a person but a stepping stone that gives them some rest to get themselves together.

Access to a safe, comfortable and safe place to sleep means better mental and physical health and ultimately, a chance to take a breath to work on a pathway out of homelessness.

Apart from the provision of the Sleepbus the service is also looking for some volunteers.

This is an awesome hands-on role for someone who likes a chat.

The Service Volunteer role can be either a night or morning shift.

This rst Sleepbus is now under construction and the $100,000

that it costs has now been reached.

We have already successfully been fundraising for the blue bus, and all inclusive bus, and now we are turning our attention to a second pink bus. Pink sleepbus are for women only (and their children).

Venues and Centres throughout Maleny are all using the ‘Check In Qld’ app. Its use is an ongoing government requirement to assist in tracing and supports the safety of our community, visitors and all the volunteers working in venues throughout Qld, many of whom are in the 'most at risk' category.

Maleny Bowls Club Historic Notice

The Maleny Hotel has partnered with the Maleny organisation - Speak Up Now - Stop Domestic and Family Violence group in Maleny. The hotel has sponsored drink coasters to be used throughout the pub and bistro areas with the message 'See Something - Say Something', and include a phone number to contact for help.

Those who work in hotels regularly witness abusive behaviour - the new coasters underline that such behaviour is not acceptable, and that bystanders can help by speaking up, and offering help to victims. The Speak Up Now group is a collaboration between the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, the Rotary Club of Maleny, and Zonta Blackall Range whose aim is to reduce the number of domestic and family violence incidents within our community.

They are doing this by raising awareness of what each of us can do to help children, women, and men to live a life free of violence and abuse.

Ingredients

Middle Eastern beef and pine nut pizzas 1.

Preheat oven to 200°C (180° fan-forced). Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper.

2.

Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook mince for 3 to 4 minutes or until browned. Add garlic and spices and cook for a further minute or until fragrant.

3.

Meanwhile, microwave pumpkin on HIGH (100%) for 2 to 3 minutes or until just tender. Drain.

4.

Place one Lebanese bread on each of the prepared baking trays.

Divide the pizza sauce between breads, top with mince mixture and sprinkle with onion, tomatoes, cheese and pine nuts. Cook in oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until bread is crisp and cheese melted.

5.

Top pizzas with baby spinach, coriander and yoghurt. Serve with lemon wedges.

500g lean beef mince 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 300g butternut pumpkin, peeled, cut into 2cm pieces 300g rm tofu diced into 2cm pieces

2 wholemeal Lebanese breads (30cm) 2/3 cup pizza sauce with garlic, onion & herbs 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced

You can also use pre-made pizza bases which are available in wholemeal and gluten free.

Beef strips would also work well in this recipe as a substitute to mince.

Cheddar, blue or goats cheese could be used instead of mozzarella.

4.

Substitute spices for 1 tablespoon Moroccan seasoning.

Winter is a time for Fatal House Fires

Winter is a prime time for house res and many of these result in serious injury or even death. Most preventable re fatalities occurred in owneroccupied houses. These res were mainly caused by: smoking materials • heaters • electrical faults • cooking • candles.

• Smoke alarms were not tted in most of the homes where deaths occurred. In those that did have them, 31% of them were not working.

The absence of working smoke alarms can increase the possibility of a fatal re by 60%.

The installation of smoke alarms forms one part of a Home Fire Escape Plan. It is vitally important that every family has a complete Home Fire Escape Plan which all occupants of your household practise and understand.

In a house re the safest area for breathing is near the oor where the air is cooler and cleaner.

Volunteer with Maleny RFB We are looking for volunteers

Maleny RFB is part of Rural Fire Service Queensland. The Maleny Group covers over 100 sq kilometres and have 3 re ghting trucks and 1 Command Vehicle. The group also assists other volunteer groups.

We are always looking for more volunteers so if you think you can help come along and join our friendly group.

Maleny SES & RFB Crews have to comply with the COVID lockdown as with everyone else, however should their services be needed they will still attend and carry out their duties as necessary.

Sunshine Coast residents are being strongly urged to get a COVID-19 test even if you have the slightest symptom or if you are unsure if your symptom is COVID-19 related.

If you have one of the following symptoms fever, shortness of breath, cough, diarrhoea, sore throat, fatigue, runny nose, nausea, loss of smell or loss of taste – please make arrangements to get tested immediately.

Did you know that you can download an App from your App Store from where you can request assistance from the Queensland SES. This app makes it easier and quicker to summons assistance when you or your property are in danger or potential danger associated with ood or storm in Queensland.

Another way in which you can prepare for the future is to download this app onto your phone for easy and quick use.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions We are all tired of the constant limitations and lockdown within our communities in attempts to contain the COVID virus. We are also not going to get through this pandemic until the majority of Australians are vaccinated against the virus.

Another thing that is for certain is that the world is not going to be the same as it was before. The Genie is out of the bottle and it is not possible to put it back. We naw have to learn to live to a new set of rules. We just cannot just oat along as we are now. Irrespective of the changed circumstances, like it or not, life must go on.

Given the heightened risk of people becoming infected with the COVID virus, ATAGI’s advice in responding to such an outbreak of the COVID-19 delta strain is that anyone who has received an AstraZeneca vaccine more than 4 weeks ago should contact their vaccine provider to arrange their second dose as soon as possible. ATAGI advice is that the bene ts to people aged 60 or over of being vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine strongly outweigh the risks That is the of cial advice. Many people are not willing to get this vaccination because of fear of the side effects. Many more people die from the actual virus than from any side effects of the vaccine. So it is important to reduce the impact of the virus on individuals.

As with any medication there is some risk - that goes for everything in life, there is always some risk.

Too many people are being advised by Dr. Google and Social Media and are taking that advice as being the best advice available. Nothing could be further from the truth.

It is true that the vaccines are not going to stop one from getting the virus or spreading it, but it will certainly be less serious and less infectious.

It is important to speak frankly with ones personal doctor about personal risks. I have done that and my doctor of some 40 years and my heart specialist both advised AstraZeneca vaccine start immediately. I have now had both doses, with no problems as have both those medical people and their families.

It is important that we all get in quickly and get vaccinated and at present the best solution is to start the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The violence that we saw recently by those wanting to cease the lockdowns is not only unnecessary, but shows ignorance and a lack of compassion for all other Aussies.

Being vaccinated is a critical step to move beyond the current pandemic situation and get our lives back into some normality.

When a new young priest came to town, the funeral director asked him to hold a grave side service for a homeless man with no family or friends.

The funeral was to be at a cemetery way out in the country. This was a new cemetery and this man was the rst to be laid to rest there.

The priest was not familiar with the area and became lost. Being a typical man, of course, he did not ask for directions.

He nally found the cemetery about an hour late. The back hoe was there and the crew was eating their lunch. The hearse was nowhere to be seen.

He apologised to the workers for being late. As he looked into the open grave, he saw the vault lid already in place.

He told the workers he would not keep them long, but that this was the proper thing to do. The workers, still eating their lunch, gathered around the opening.

The priest was young and enthusiastic and poured out his heart and soul as he preached. The workers joined in with, “Praise the Lord,” “Amen,” and “Glory!”

He got so into the service that he preached and preached and preached, from Genesis to The Revelation.

When the service was over, the priest said a prayer and walked to his car. As he opened the door, he heard one of the workers say, “I never saw anything like that before and I’ve been putting in septic systems for twenty years.”

Morale; Even people of the cloth need to ensure that they are aware of the circumstances of the situations in which they nd themselves. Sometimes it is hard for new arrivals.

About the Maleny Library As told by Mrs Peg Burnett Mrs. Peg Burnett was Matriarch of the Maleny Community. Among the many voluntary positions she has held in the Maleny Community during her lifetime has been ensuring that the Maleny Community has only the best library facilities available.

When the rst Hall - The Community Centre - was built in 1908 and rebuilt in 1913 a room in the front of the building was set aside as a Meeting Place. As well as the local sporting bodies & charities using the room, music, speech and dancing along with the Maleny Literary & Debating Society all used this room.

McLean manned the library for a few years, then, when fairly established, Miss Betty Blacklaw was appointed as a paid librarian and managed the library until she married in 1931.

About 1916 Mrs Jack (Grigor) and my mother Mrs Andy McLean (both ex school teachers) realised that Maleny needed a library.

They were both members of the Hall Committee, so had no trouble in persuading the rest of the committee of the need.

I opened the library on Tuesday 2pm-5pm, Friday 10am-3pm, and Saturday nights from 7-8pm before the pictures began. I was paid 7/6 per week. Previously, Betty had used a card system, but we introduced a ledger system which was considered to be more ef cient.

As the Hall had been built under the umbrella of The School Of Arts, they applied to the headquarters in Ann Street Brisbane for some help in stocking a library.

A nucleus of a library was supplied by the School of Arts and further books bought by the local committee. Mrs (Grigor) and Mrs

I resigned from the library when I married (married women didn’t work then) and several other librarians carried on until a re gutted the building in 1958. A couple of hundred books were saved and when the Hall was rebuilt the Committee asked that I re-establish the library.

I applied for the job and was successful, so went to Brisbane to the Ann Street Library for some training for about three months.

We dusted off the old books and appealed for donations of books to get the library up and running.

I might add that we got heaps of Readers Digest & Book Club books, but all were very welcome.

We charged sixpence as a book borrowing fee, and that money was used to purchase further books. We built up a reasonable collection, but there was not

Readers paid a yearly subscription and books were free. We bought our books directly from the publishers - Hodder & Stoughton, Heineman and Collins mainly - in England, and from Dymocks in Sydney when on sale.

Meanwhile, the Landsborough (now the Caloundra) City Council moved towards establishing a library in Caloundra. They previously had a School Of Arts Library, as we did. At this time the Library Board of Queensland was interested in establishing mobile libraries to service country people so a Regional Mobile Library was established servicing the Caloundra, Noosa and Maroochy shires, with headquarters in Caloundra.

The library bus was purchased and stocked, and took to the road with Jim O’Hara as Driver/ Librarian. He was soon everybody’s friend and we were all sorry to lose him when he retired.

The books from the Maleny Library were purchased by the Board for $1,100 - the money going back into our Hall funds.

As Maleny’s population mushroomed the need for a State Library with all modern amenities found in today’s libraries was vital so the Caloundra Council moved to that end.

pictured left, being situated on the tranquil bank of the Obi Creek and tucked in on one side by Apex Park ensures that the Library remains a favourite reading place.

Its facilities not only provide recreation reading material for the hinterland community but important resources for people studying.

There are many bene ts to being a library member, including free Wi-Fi, recreational and information services and programs, and a specialist heritage section within Nambour Library.

In 1991 the library service commissioned a new computer system The old Fruit Barn in Coral Street, Maleny was purchased in 1997 and was converted into the beautiful library that we have today. It was of cially opened in 1998.

Other resources available at the library are ve public access computers providing word processing and internet facilities, an electronic reference section with CD roms, a toy library section for the young and a community meeting room.

In 2020 the Maleny Library received a major upgrade which included new carpet, shelving, signage, paint throughout and furniture.

The library also provided a meeting place and helps to ll that gap in our village life.

Maleny - Blackall Range Lions Club in our community

Lions club members are men and women who strive to make a difference in their local community as well as in communities worldwide. Their volunteer efforts go beyond the support of vision care, to addressing unmet health and education needs worldwide.

The Lions club of Maleny-Blackall Range is one of the largest Community Service Clubs on the Sunshine Coast.

Maleny - Blackall Range Lions Club meets for a Business Meeting at the Maleny Uniting Church Hall on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6.30pm. The monthly Dinner Meeting is generally held at The Orangery,10 Mountain View Rd, at 6.30pm on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

Special club events such as Club Changeover and Christmas Party may be held at different venues.

We are holding a Free Bonsai workshop on September 4th at our store at 31 Coral Street, Maleny.. The workshop will run for approximately 3 hours. This is a FREE workshop.

The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwar ng. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees.

Purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the viewer, and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity for the grower. The Japanese art of bonsai is believed

to have originate about the 6th century This workshop will be conducted by Jeff Reed a member of the Sunshine Coast Bonsai Society.

Sam and his trusty beast came to the rescue and pulled us through!.
