Maleny Dairies truck involved in fatal accident One of the semi trailer trucks from Maleny Dairies was involved in a fatal road accident at the intersection of Roys Road and Dianella Road, Beerwah about 3.50pm Monday, November 29.

Accident at Booroobin In another local accident at about 9a.m. on Friday December 3rd a woman was injured when her vehicle was involved in a single vehicle accident on Stanley River Road, Booroobin when she collided with an embankment.

The female driver was initially trapped in the vehicle. The Life ight helicopter attended the scene. The female suffered shoulder and back injuries and was conveyed to hospital in a stable condition The Queensland Police Service (QPS) and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) are urging motorists to drive to conditions as Queensland prepares for a wet 2021-2022 Queensland disaster season.

A police spokesperson said, “As we now enter Queensland’s disaster season, police want all motorists to consider what they need to do in order to make it home safe in wet weather.”

Since the start of 2021, a total of 261 people have lost their lives on Queenland roads, 14 more than the same time last year.

Remember if the road is ooded - “don’t risk it”.

“Make a kid’s Christmas” Sharing or telling stories is an important way to support your child’s early literacy development.

“Painting over smoke damaged areas” Whether from

re damage or simply from constant cigarette smoke;

painting over smoke damaged areas is dif cult to get right!

The composition of smoke stains is dependent on the composition of the material that has been burnt to produce the smoke. Some smoke stains may contain high proportions of carbon particles but others can contain a wide variety of both solvent and water soluble substances. Wood and paper fires produce large amounts of carbon but plastic can produce many types of contamination.

The initial treatment of all smoke related stains must involve the washing of the surface using a Heavy Duty Sugar Soap and a sponge or soft cloth, working up from the bottom of the wall to avoid running of the stain over other work. Allow a few minutes for the Sugar Soap to penetrate the stain and then thoroughly rinse off with clean water.

Smoke from cigarettes produces nicotine deposits that will produce stains through the applied paint coatings. It must be assumed that on any smoke damaged surface, both water and solvent soluble substances will be present.

If you have leaking pipes or roof, you'll know what a waterstain looks like. When your walls get wet, it can create a brownish-yellow discoloration called a water-stain then this product is also good for them..

Coverage of this product is up to 10 square metres per litre, depending on the porosity of the surface being coated.

Two coats of Stain Block Sealer may be required depending on the severity of the stain and the effectiveness of the pre-cleansing

Recipes from Jeremi Coconut Curries Sausages

When only the best will do!Ingredients 6 beef sausages

Step 1 Brown sausages in a pan, cutting in half in the pan, so they cook through.

6 potatoes chopped 2 celery stalks diced

When sausages are almost cooked, add onions and celery, and cook until just soft.

2 carrots chopped 1 onion chopped

1.

400 g canned diced tomatoes

Add carrots, potatoes, garlic and salt and pepper.

2.

Add curry powder and stir until fragrant.

1 tbs crushed garlic

3.

Add stock and tomatoes and mix well. Allow to simmer.

4.

Place mixture in an ovenproof dish and bake at 180C for approximately 10 minutes.

5.

Add 1/2 the coconut milk and stir through.

Cook for a further 5 minutes. Leave in a hot oven whilst making the rice.

6.

Place rice in a pot with the remaining coconut milk, cover with water and cook until rice is soft.

2 tbs curry powder 2 cups Chicken Style Liquid Stock 375 ml Carnation coconut milk 2 cups rice *to taste *to serve 1 pinch salt and pepper *to taste

Use 1/2 of the 375ml can of coconut milk for the sausages, and add the remaining half to the rice.

New Public Health Measures for Businesses from 17th December

From 17th December when Queensland is forecast to reach the 80% double vaccinated milestone, hospitality and entertainment venues, including festivals, will only be permitted to allow entry to patrons and staff who are fully vaccinated. Since 19th November people have been able to link their vaccination certi cate into the Check In Qld app. Customers and staff will continue to use the app to assist with prompt contact tracing.

Don’t use your phone when driving!

A eet of cameras used to monitor mobile phone and seatbelt use in Queensland will be used permanently.

The current penalty in Queensland for using a mobile phone behind the wheel is $1033 and four demerit points, while the ne for not wearing a seatbelt is $413 and three demerit points.

Statistics show that driver distraction presently contributes to almost 20 per cent of serious injuries and 12 per cent of all fatalities on Queensland roads.

A survey found hat one in 42 drivers were detected illegally using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

Who knows - you might just get a ride to the lockup in this modern police vehicle, pictured right.

Maleny Historical Memories “How Times Have Changed” by the late William (Bill) Penney

Maleny’s rst sale yard for cattle and pigs was situated at what is now Cooke Park. It was later shifted to beside the hotel, across the creek, out of town – where Woolworths is today. Here is an interesting history, told by the late Bill Penney, about how the animals were collected weekly from far and wide and sold at the Maleny sale yards.

Bill Penney recalls: When I came to Maleny in 1935, the saleyards were situated on the same site as they are today, and were operated by Stephen Porter and Co Stephen went to the war and, sadly, never returned. The business was carried on by his brother Chas, until after the war when his nephew-in-law, Guy Cuthbertson, came along to run the business.

My involvement started around 1950. In those days they were selling pigs and calves once a week, and cattle once a month.

Each Monday morning, we would take the Fargo truck around the farms in Maleny, and the old International truck would go down to the Conondale area. It carried a set of platform scales to weigh the pigs and calves as they were loaded. Those farmers were immediately paid by cheque.

The Maleny animals were loaded and brought to the saleyards where they were weighed, and, later, the owners would come to town and get their money.

Darling Downs bacon factory in Brisbane on his behalf. Other pigs were consigned to the bacon factory on behalf of the owners.

These were tattooed or re branded for identi cation by the owner before being taken to the railway. The calves were sent to the meatworks. Collecting the cattle was a busy time. We (Wally Ferriday and I) would leave from home at 5 or 6 o'clock in the morning, load our horses onto the truck and go down to Conondale, sometimes to Cambroon, to start the ride back.

We picked up cattle on the way, going into the farms that had cattle for sale. By the time we got to Fritz's farm, Mrs Grey would be waiting with a cup of tea and sandwiches (God bless her!).

By now we would have anything up to forty head of cattle. Our next stop would be Max Grundon's where we would have lunch (maybe 2 o'clock) leave the cattle in the yards and ride back

By that time it could be nearly dark and we had perhaps 100 head. Quite a few times we drove the cattle into Maleny by the lights of the boss's car.

By the time we put them in the "Tinner Paddock" (which is now part of the Porter's Farm Estate off Fig Street) it would be 9 or 10 o'clock at night.

Next day it was off to Wootha, Boroobin and North Maleny. Jack Eite would collect from Reesville.

while! He nished up in the maternity section before being headed off and returned to the mob, much to the delight of the nursing staff.

The cattle had to be in to the saleyards, and the ones collected from the Tinner Paddock, before the sale could start around 1 o’clock.

After the sale, the cattle would have to be taken back to the paddock and kept until there were railway trucks availabe, or the meatworks wanted their cattle. It was nothing to have 300 head of cattle in the paddock for days.

Occasionally they would break out, and then the fun would start - nding them all again.

We would have to take the cattle out to grass every day until they were sent away. We would take them along the Witta-Maleny Road. One person would go out as far as the Cement Hill and the other would stay at Reesville Road, spend the whole day there as the cattle grazed, and then bring them into the paddock at night.

Later, the same bull went into Tytherleigh's shop in Landsborough and quickly cleared the shop of its staff. No damage was done, thank goodness.

Some years later, the saleyards and business were sold to E.J.Cranney, who carried on as before until he passed away. It was then taken over by present owners, Boxsells, who have continued the business for many years.

Slowly things have changed over the times. Trucks started to pick up around the area, and so today everything is brought in by truck and taken away as soon as the sale is nished. You don't see a horse or dog around the yards much these days.

Sometimes we were lucky enough lo get all to the railway at once. Other times it happened a few truckloads at a time.

Maleny Visitors Information Centre Christmas Party Volunteers from the Maleny Visitors Information Centre showed their heels at their 2021 Christmas Party at the Maleny RSL Hall on Wednesday December 1st.

This Christmas “get tog ether” was the culmination of another year of volunteering for the Visitor Information Volunteers assisting the Maleny community in advising, in a friendly manner, the tourists “where to go”.

The volunteers all agreed that it was a very ful lling way to help our community businesses. They were also very appreciative of the RSL staff, Chris and Clarke who assisted with “refreshments” during the night.

Journalists from the local news paper decided to interview her.

The interviewer asked questions like how it was to be a newlywed in her 90s.

“This isn’t my rst husband, so it’s not much different than the others,” she replied with a smile.

“Oh? How many husbands have you had?” the interviewer inquired.

“This one will be my fourth,” she replied. ”I was married in my 20s to a banker, then in my 40s to a circus performer. After that I married a preacher.”

“What does your current husband do?”

“Oh he’s a funeral director.” The interviewer laughed and then asked how she came to marry these men from such different backgrounds and personalities.

“It always made sense to me,” she replied. “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

MORAL: It is important that one has ones priorities right when they make important decisions and those decisions should t with the priorities.

What do you know about the Pumicestone Passage

Pumicestone Passage, also known as the Pumicestone Channel, is a narrow waterway between Bribie Island and the mainland in Queensland, Australia. The northern extent of the passage is at Caloundra, while at the south is Deception Bay. It is less than an hour’s drive from our Maleny homeland.

It is a marine park and has 24 islands and is bounded by 240 kilometres of shoreline. The Park supports large numbers of migratory waders, or shorebirds. It is also the home to dolphins, sea cows and turtles all of which feed on the sea grass beds in the area.

Mathew Flinders was the first European explorer to enter Moreton Bay in 1799 on the Sloop H. M. ‘Norfolk’ . He and his crew spent two weeks exploring the bay.

With Covid still evident and curtailing our “getting away” from it all, then why not take a cruise around the Pumicestone Passage.

Ferryman Cruises from Bribe Island are close to Maleny, convenient and a great day out.

How many of us have taken a tour of the area and found out just a bit more about our areas history and the ecology of the Pumicestone Passage. Well, we recently visited the area to nd out just what is available right on our doorstep.

The Pumicestone Passage inhabits mangroves, saltmarshes, sand ats, coastal dunes and seagrass meadows, making the perfect home to dugongs, dolphins, turtles and over 350 species of birds including around 24 species of migratory shorebird. It is all within an hours drive from Maleny.

About to buy a property, but not sure how to allocate ownership?

It’s important to understand how you’re going to own your property. If you’re buying a property with another person, you can own it as joint tenants or tenants in common and this is usually dependant on the relationship between the parties and how you want to own your property.

Joint Tenancy In a joint tenancy the parties to an agreement for the purchase of property individually hold an undivided equal share of the property. Where both parties purchase the property together, there is no speci ed percentage as to who owns what. A joint tenant does not have the right to transfer or sell their interest in the property.

In order to remove their interest, they must apply to have the joint tenancy severed which will transfer that interest to the other joint tenant.

Furthermore, it should be noted that there can be more than two joint tenants to the agreement although it is most common to see joint tenancy in the form of a marriage like partnership.

“Sam attracts “a new bird”!”

t’s been established that due to necessary repairs to Slim the Tractor, Sam will have to see out the wet season in Darwin.

But the best news by far is that the Travelling Jackeroo, Sam Hughes from Maleny, reached a fantastic milestone on 23rd November. As his blog that day reported, his fund-raising efforts have raised an amazing $50,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia!

Congratulations Sam, Maleny is so proud of you.

Meanwhile, we thought you’d like to see that Sam knows how to attract the birds check out this cute little hitchhiker Sam picked up recently at the Berry Springs community market!

Safer communications is now making me safer.

My trip through rural West Australa oce I get to set off again has been made safer with the provision of an advanced satellite phone by the company Rent a Sat Phone. I’ll be able to stay in touch where normal phones wouldn’t work.

The recent rescue of the Wes Australian family in the Simpson Desert because they had good communications made me realise how important communication is when travelling in remote areas.

Maleny Ambulance 1980’s Formed in 1915, the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade Honorary Centre situated at 50 Maple Street, Maleny quickly grew to cater for the growth in population in Maleny. The Ambulance Centre remained on that site until a new Centre was built and occupied in 1994 at 8 Bean Street, Maleny opposite the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. This was previously the site of the old Maleny Hospital.

The Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital was opened as a private hospital on 1st August 1920 with Dr Anderson as the Medical of cer and Matron Gorringe as his aide.

Today the building is the home of Imeldas Shoes and the Maple Street, Maleny bus stop. The photo at right shows the present Ambulance Station which was opened in 1994.
