Since the beginning of the year there has been a continuing period of rain falling in our area. As a result our roadways have taken a beating and many pot holes have developed.

These potholes are not only makes that section of roadway dangerous for drivers, but can cause a lot of damage to tyres and vehicles, and this results in expensive repairs.

The state of some of these potholes has prompted renewed calls for our community to be the eyes and ears for damaged roads and to dob in a pothole or report damaged roads.

The Council always appreciate the community’s assistance is locating and alerting us to any repairs needed, especially on local residential streets.

Sunshine Coast Council crews and contractors have been busy clearing debris and assessing our roads to make sure they are safe.

Before you report potholes or damages, please rstly check if the road is owned by the local council road or the State Government. You can quickly check this by visiting Queensland Traf c Road Lookup website at: https://qldtraf c.qld.gov.au/lookup.html which tells you if you should contact council or the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

This step before you submit your request will ensure the repair job is directed to the correct road owner to get the job done quickly!

Past Maleny Library stalwart honoured for tireless dedication Peg was a true stalwart of Maleny, working tirelessly both formally and informally for the bene t of her community. Her legacy has been formally recognised, with a new plaque installed in her memory at Maleny Library.

The original Maleny library opened in the annex of the Maleny School of Arts Hall in Maple Street, Maleny in 1932.

Unfortunately, in 1951, a re gutted the building, including the library section. The hall was rebuilt on the same site and renamed the Maleny Community Centre.

Peg returned to volunteer and manage the library until 1978. She spent much of her life servicing and restoring the library. She raised money for the Library by renting out books from a small collection saved from the re and the funds raised allowed her to buy new books to rebuild the library catalogue.

In the 1990s, the Maleny Fruit Barn, then adjacent to Tesch Park, on Coral Street, was bought by the then Caloundra City Council and refurbished to become the new library. The present-day Library was of cially opened on 1 May 1998 and was named “The Peg Burnett Library”.

I've long advocated for Queensland's burgeoning space sector, and I'll continue to make the case to the new government that Queensland is the PERFECT place to invest in the space industry. The aim is to bring the research into translation and commercialisation capabilities. his transformational project will not only unlock so many new opportunities, create thousands of new jobs, but it is urgently needed to help reduce the daily heavy congestion on the Bruce Highway between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.

Maleny Show - another great success!!!

Recently in Parliament, we debated the Building and Other Legislation Amendment Bill. I focused on amendments which would see treated greywater able to be used in things like cooling towers and ushing toilets.

They involve many community members in differing roles and it was not until COVID shut them down for a couple of years that we realised just how important they are to our community.

Population growth, climate change, the need for more sustainable buildings and more mean that there is an increased need for innovative ways to use and re-use water.

Each year around 1.5 million Queenslanders attend these shows which contribute $10 million to local communities. The shows would not happen without the dedication and hard work of 135,000 volunteers.

As usual the various exhibits in the different categories were of a very high standard - congratulations to the exhibitors in all sections.

This table in the photo was was treated using Liquid Glass to ll in the imperfections in the wood and then coated in Northane for a fantastic nish by HSC student Cooper Vallance who was completing a woodwork art and design project.

Another use is to coat pressed ower art work after it is complete.

When only the best will do!

Ingredients 4 x 200g porterhouse steaks, fat trimmed 500g “microwave in a bag” mini white potatoes 2 carrots, peeled, cut into batons 1 bunch broccolini, trimmed 1 cup frozen peas

Heat a lightly oiled chargrill pan or barbecue on high.

Cook steaks for 3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Rest for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook potatoes in packet for 4 to 5 minutes on HIGH (100%) or until tender, adding carrots, broccolini and peas in a microwave safe container for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender In a non-stick frying pan heat oil over medium-high heat.

Add onions and cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until softened.

In a jug, prepare gravy according to packet instructions.

Add gravy to pan, season and stir to combine. Simmer for 1 minute or until heated through Serve steaks with gravy and vegetables. Sprinkle with parsley, to serve.

1 tsp olive oil

Tips to make it a good meal!

1 brown onion, thinly sliced 29g packet traditional gravy mix Chopped parsley, to serve.

Use any type of steak for this recipe – eye llet, scotch and rump would also work well.

Substitute potatoes with shoestring or sweet potato fries Any vegetables of choice would work well and can be microwaved – snow peas, green beans, broccoli, and squash, to name a few.

“Ask The butcher. Skip the expensive beef if you’re cooking it well Most butchers like their beef on the rare side. If you prefer well done, go for it, but you can probably skip the most expensive steaks.

Even though it is still raining - don’t forget your bush re work for the next season.

Bush res can affect anyone, anywhere in Queensland.

Even though the wet weather continues throughout our area landowners cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to getting ready for a potentially damaging bush re season. The recent spell of wet weather will ensure that there is a large load of combustible re fuel on the ground when the next re season arrives. Because of this it is important that preparations have been made prior to the season starts.

During a bush re, your safety and the safety of your property depends on your preparations and the decisions you make. Make your bush re survival plan now and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property.

Whilst the Rural Fire Volunteers are always happy to assist, it is not their place to ensure that all property owners have completed their bush re safety work around their properties.

Residents and land owners should now be contemplating their bush re plan, and maintain their properties by keeping gutters clean, removing overhanging branches and overgrown vegetation around property structures, removing unnecessary debris and ensuring driveways are kept clear for access.

Maleny and District residents are getting an early start to winter and may face days of strong winds and plummeting temperatures. Maleny temperatures have been recording as low as 6 before climbing to just 16 degrees during the daytime.

These low temperatures are accompanied by wind gusts ranging from 26 knots up with peak gusts in excess of 90 kilometres per hour. With the ground still so wet from the recent prolonged rain trees are at risk of blowing over without warning. It is important to consider this risk when parking or playing around them.

The wind and trees also play havoc with power lines so keep away from fallen lines.

What to do if you need assistance

The decade of the 1950’s in Australia sees the birth of the 'prosperous Australian society', with a time of full (male) employment and a boom in babies and marriages.

A quiet demographic revolution is underway thanks to ongoing immigration. original Australian record and the artist who made it to number one in Australia was the decade for Slim Dusty and his song, A Pub with No Beer in 1958 was the rst original Australian record that made an Australian artist to become number one in Australia.

In the decade of the 1950’s most people in Australia lived in or near cities. They were proud to be subjects of the Queen and believed that they lived in a fair and just democracy.

During the 1950’s Australians lived in a more prosperous time. They had much smaller houses, but much bigger back yards. This gave plenty of space for the playing of cricket or kicking the footy, a vegie garden, chooks, often still an outdoor dunny, a Hills Hoist, a detached garage, a shed, a lemon tree, and probably a few other fruit trees.

Often that cricket game or footy kicking happened in the street. For a kid, everything was an adventure. There were no digital

devices in the 1950’s.

Women’s fashions consisted of oral, polka-dots, or cherries printed fabrics for day wear.

Melbourne saw the games of the XVI Olympiad, or the 1956 Olympic games.

These 43rd Olympic Games were the rst Olympics to be staged in the Southern Hemisphere as well as the rst to be held outside Europe and North America. This was the beginning of the careers of Betty Cuthbert and swimmers, Dawn Fraser and Murray Rose.

It was not until the 1st March 1975 that colour television was introduced.

The fties were de ned by beautiful design, bringing the good-looking, affordable 48-215 (FX) to Australians. Production was booming and by the end of the decade, over 500,000 Holden's were produced. It was during the 1950.s car ownership soared in Australia.

This decade saw the fondly regarded FJ Holden followed by more modern designs like the FE and the 1958 FC. By this time, Holden outsold the nearest competitor by two to one.

In 1956 the era of teenage rebels nicknamed bodgies (the blokes with their Bodgie haircut) and widgies (their sheilas) following the screening of the rst rock and roll movie, Blackboard Jungle. In 1956 these youths attempted to nd their place when they rioted in the name of “street rock and roll” at the intersection of Albert and Charlotte Streets.

The riot started after the bodgies and wedges queued for hours to get a seat at the Australian premiere of Rock Around the Clock.

The population of Brisbane in the 1950s was just over 500,000. Pubs closed at 6 pm resulting in the so called ‘six o’clock swill’. To get around, people caught trams that trundled along Queen Street, and out in all directions to the suburbs.

Brisbane still had deliveries from the baker and milkman. One always awaited the aroma of freshly baked bread on lifting the lid of the bread tin. A van also would come around with fresh fruit on display for housewives to come.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions There is about to be a new branding on Queensland Transport infrastructure. The branding will feature on new smart ticketing systems, staff uniforms, web pages, signage, posters, and printed materials, as well as on buses, ferries, trains and trams.

The Transport Department spent $110,640 in external development costs on creating the brand’s colour palette and updating the logo.

A spokesman for TMR said that the move was about being more visible, user-friendly and modern after having the same branding for almost 20 years.

The original logo signi ed the combining of the various forms of public transport when they came under the same administration.

From Above to Below

The $110640 does not include signage at stations and stops, on vehicles, uniforms and printed materials. No anticipated cost of this replacement has been publicised, however it could run into millions of dollars.

First comment is “what was wrong with the original logo and is it going to improve the quality of public transport in Queensland or increase services to the public?”

The TMR has not advised which company or companies were engaged for the external development of the new logo and branding or if the contract went to tender.

This change reminds the tax paying public of the change of name, at great expense to the taxpayer of the Lady Cilento hospital to The Queensland Children’s Hospital in 2018. The anticipated cost of that change was about one million dollars, again with no service bene t to the taxpayer.

With all the problems that are confronting both the Health Department and the Transport Department surely these changes pale into insigni cance. Whilst this money is being spent the Queensland Premier continues to complain about the amount of money that comes from the Federal Government.

Please spend taxpayers hard earned money in providing better services - not on whimsical bureaucratic ideas.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true. - No Bulls##t” Truthful was recently lamenting about the trials of his youth. It all seamed a long time ago he thought.

He thought that is was evident that so many things that went wrong over the years.

Truthful remembered that he had long heard about the story of a long family tradition. It seems that his father, his grandfather, and his great grandfather, had all been able to walk on water on their 18th birthday.

On that particular day, they would walk across the lake to their local pub, ‘Murphy’s Bar’, for their rst legal drink.

Truthful remembers when his 18th birthday arrived, he and his friend Mick took a boat, rowed out to the middle of the lake, and then Truthful stepped out of the boat.

He immediately sank and nearly drowned.

He was only saved by Mick, who managed to pull him back into the boat.

Furious and confused, he went to see his grandmother and said, “Gran ’tis my 18th birthday. So why can’t I walk across the water, like my father, me grandfather, and his father before him?”

Grandma looked deep into Truthful’s troubled eyes, looked at him with kind, benevolent eyes and said, “Because they were all born in January, and the lake was frozen over; you were born in August, ye fecking eejit!!”

Morale: There is always a logical explanation to most things in life.

Credit Reports!

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny Credit reporting concerns the recording of an individual’s credit worthiness and notes information about a person’s identity, any loan applications made, when the individual or a lender accessed the information and information about defaults. The credit reporting regime is regulated by the Commonwealth Privacy Act and the Credit Reporting Code of Conduct and can be done by any corporation. In Australia Veda Advantage (previously Baycorp Advantage Ltd.) and Dunn & Bradstreet are two major credit reporting corporations.

When an individual makes a loan application the lender would most likely seek to access that individual’s credit report as part of the loan approval process. This access is noted on the individual’s le as well information about the name of the lender and the amount applied for. However the credit report does not record the success or otherwise of the individual’s credit application nor will the Privacy Act allow the recording of any other personal information such as political af liations, religious beliefs, criminal history, medical history and sexual preferences.

for more than 60 days, whether an individual is bankrupt, when a cheque for more than $100 has been dishonoured twice and when, in the opinion of the lender, the individual has committed a serious credit infringement such as acting fraudulently.

The Maleny Coat Rack is up and running at the usual place, outside of the Maleny IA store.. The Maleny Coat Rack is a notfor-pro t venture, managed and maintained by Suzi Lough of Ra' Yoga and Lifestyle Maleny and Sue Krucker of Maleny State High school. The vision is to initiate charity and change, through supporting our communities needs.

There are hangers on the rack, so please feel free to hang your unwanted coats, jackets, jumpers and cardie on the rack. If you are feeling the cold and need a coat then simply nd one your size and rug-up..

Please NO other garments, other than those mentioned above to be put on the rack, we can only accomodate the above items.

REIQ Real Estate Predictions for Sunshine Coast

According to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ), median home prices rose 1.8 per cent from July to September 2021. Local government areas (LGAs) featuring tourism attractions and Greater Brisbane are popular among buyers, and growth in some regions remains strong despite market volatility.

The Sunshine Coast’s property market has been one of the hottest in Queensland but experts are predicting a steady 12 months ahead. The Sunshine Coast, stretching north to Noosa and south to Caloundra, has the highest median house price of any regional area in the country.

The REIQ expects prices to remain steady in 2022, or even a slight incline as early trends showed fewer buyers in the market, but also beside that is an ongoing low supply of properties for sale.

A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said Caloundra South (Aura), Palmview and Beerwah East Major Development Area were listed as major expansion areas.

The spokesperson continued that the Beerwah East has long been the council’s preference for the location of green eld development to help house up to 200,000 extra residents estimated to move into the region before 2041. Even Maleny is

presently seeing a growth in housing numbers with the imminent development off Tallowood Street and then off Teak Street which together brings over 150 new blocks in the town area.

This area will remain popular with buyers who wish to maximise opportunities alongside railway upgrades taking place for Landsborough and Beerwah. These areas are also were appealing due to their easy air links to both Sydney and Melbourne.

It is even possible that Sunshine Coast house prices outpricing the Brisbane housing market soon were realistic.

The Sunshine Coast Council is presently implementing a new planning scheme which is intended to be in place by 2024.

The planning scheme was a set of planning principles prepared by council to guide what can be built and where. As a result the council wants local residents’ feedback about their local areas. A council statement said the intent of the scheme was about making sure the right development happens in the right locations.

The council realises that the approach would be that it would not be a “one size ts all” approach to local development.

Sunshine Coast Council about to roll out Green Bins Over the next few weeks the Sunshine Coast Council will begin to roll out a new garden organics bin to residences. The expanded garden organics service start as from 11 July 2022.

These Garden organics bins will be emptied fortnightly, on the same day as your general waste bin. The cost for the fortnightly garden organics service is $62.10 per annum.

The Hinterlandgrapevine Online News Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top” “Sam has rst Vote” May 21st was a day of importance as it was my rst time doing an election, (lol), wasn’t sure what to expect, rocked up and there were all these jokers with cor ute signs in hand trying to give me bits of paper with names and logos on them, they seemed confused when I accepted one from each of them. After a bit of a wait I got handed a long bit of paper in a cardboard box booth thingy and told to put down at least 6 numbers for who I reckon is decent, now half of the names on there that apparently “everyone knows who they are” as one bloke put it , I didn’t know from a bar of soap, and the other half i had only seen bagging each other out on the telly and Facebook non stop, so I made some guesstimates on who I recon sounds ok All up went pretty well, didn’t get arrested or blow up the “zooks” motor which currently has the distinct rattle of buggered tappets that can be heard from 2 blocks away. (getting xed soon) Also I avoid politics like the plague because it always ends in a ght of epic proportions.

The Great Moscow Circus is also here in Darwin. I was please to accept their offer and support and was able to raise $500 for my charities during only the 3 shows I’ve attended so far with many more to come in the near future. Thanks!!

am has recently had to restore his favourite Akubra following it giving him a long period of good use in protecting his face and head from the harsh sun.

Sam says; “ There. is still a lot of good use in it.

To part with it would be like parting with a close friend.”

This is me wearing it in my “going out mode” when I was a guest at the Moscow Circus. I will have a bit more to say about the Moscow Circus soon.

Celebrating End of WW11 - 1945 - Maleny In Australia the 15th August 1945 was recognised as VP Day and was as much a celebration of the end of the war as it was about impending peace. Australia’s government declared VP Day a public holiday and crowds ooded the streets of towns.

The Maleny Community celebrates the end of WW11 with a parade up Maple Street, Maleny in 1945.

This photo was taken looking south on Maple Street, Maleny towards the building that now holds “Piece of Green”. Many of the buildings still remain. Even rear in parking still exists. From the number of people in the photo it would appear that the entire population of the district, all dressed in their best “Sunday clothes” turned out on the day.
