2020 GLASSHOUSE SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS WINNERS Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell was thrilled to finally announce the winners of his annual Glass House Small Business Awards at Hideaway Weddings in Beerwah recently.

The event, the culmination of almost two months of nominations and voting, was a glitzy evening. It brought together small business owners and employees and the local Chambers of Commerce to celebrate all that small business is and does for the region.

“For a while there I thought we weren’t going to be able to hold a Glassies Gala this year due to COVID. We usually have the event in May, to coincide with Small Business Week, but had to postpone due to social distancing and isolation requirements” said Mr Powell.

“I’m glad we did because we had a full house last night – we met the COVID cap. So many nominated businesses and employees turned up to celebrate.”

“As always, Glass House locals cast an extraordinary number of votes for the nominated businesses and employees – nearly 4,000!

While the silver “Glassy” is chosen based off the number of votes received, the bronze and gold are selected by a panel that includes the Chamber Presidents. It is always difficult to choose those winners due to the quantity and quality of entires, and we deliberate over the options for a long time before picking winners.”

“Every silver winner who was chosen by popular votes won by and slides in their respective region. It’s great to see that our communities value and recognise the hard work that small businesses and employees do in contributing to our daily lives.”

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston Barung Earthworks on Maleny Precinct completed I am pleased to advise that the Barung Landcare Bulk Earthworks, Parkland Drive, North Maleny Project portion of the Barung Landcare Community Gardens redevelopment has been completed.

Works included;

Maleny Showgrounds reminder

Unfortunately some dog owners are abusing the privilege of using the Maleny Showgrounds as an off-leash dog area.

During recent weeks some irresponsible owners have allowed their dogs to enter the playing fields during games and training. This is extremely dangerous for both dogs and players.

In addition, some owners are failing to clean up after their dogs, which is a health and biosecurity risk to other users.

There have been disturbing instances of uncontrolled dogs being aggressive and dog excretion being plastered on the padlocks of the buildings at and around the soccer club house.

This is extremely disappointing, please remember these are shared grounds and dog owners must ensure their dogs don’t disturb anyone else using the facility.

Maleny resident - Brian Baillie 04.12.1925 - 22.09.2014 In our community we have a lot of people with very specific abilities and many of them have had amazing lives. It regularly astounds how these talented people find their way to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

This week we look at the life of Brian Baillie. Brian Baillie was for some time the Senior Vice President of The Maleny Community Centre. It was during that time that the Maleny Community Centre went through a major upgrade - the first major one since it was built in the 1950’s.

rian and his wife Cynthia purchased a farm house and some land in Maleny in 1976. Brian and Cynthia had six children and all the family had an interesting past before settling in Maleny.

At the age of 14 during the early years of the World War II Brian ran off to sea as a Deck Boy/Ordinary seaman. Over the war years and up until 1951 Brian maintained a seagoing career.

When asked about memorable incidents, Brian Said, "At one stage of the war the ship I was on was in the Caribbean and through enemy action list its bow. We limped into Panama and were in dry dock for six weeks.

Coming from England, I had never seen a banana. We were allowed to use the American Forces canteen and their banana splits were the biggest and the best without exception and I had one a day for six weeks. I am not quite so keen on them now."

In 1951 Brian met Cynthia, married and they came to live in Brisbane.

was founded by the Vestey family of England to carry their chilled beef from Argentina and other South American countries, where they had large cattle ranches and freezer works.

The Vesty family also had large cattle interests in Australia.

The company was formally registered in 1911 and the first ships were registered with Lloyds Register of Shipping between 1912-1913.

Prior to World War I Blue Star Line ships carried perishables to England from China and Asia.

During World War 1 the Blue Star line carried beef to supply the allied armies in France.

On arriving in Brisbane Brian got a job as Stevedore Supervisor with Brisbane Wharves and Stevedoring Company. This company was then the largest wharf owning and stevedoring company in Brisbane.

Over the next two decades Brian became General Manager of B.W.W.D. This company was owned by the P.&O. Shipping Line (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company - P. & O.).

He soon became a Director of P. & O. Australia and later Managing Director of that company.

P&O in those days was involved in cruises, holiday resorts, shipping agencies, stevedoring, container terminals, bulk cold stores and food distribution.

Offshore supply vessels and seagoing contracting were also important tasks carried out by P.& O. Shipping Lines.

The P. & O. Shipping company has had a long history as a shipping company trading between England, Australia and Asia.

From 1840, less than 60 years after Australia was first settled, following consultations with the British Admiralty, P & O operated a regular mail service, initially contracted to run to Alexandria in North Africa, but to be extended to India within two years. By 1850 this service had grown to include not only Mediterranean ports but also Bombay, Ceylon, Calcutta, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. In 1852 the mail service was further extended to Australia.

In the 1970’s P & O had become the operator of the Heron Island Resort off Gladstone at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. From there he led P & O Australia into the tourist industry when P & O purchased the Cradle Mountain Lodge in Tasmania and immediately set about upgrading the facilities.

In the late eighties the Baillies moved to Sydney where they remained for thirteen Years. Remaining with the P..& O. Shipping Line he became Vice Chairman of P & O ASIA with offices in Hong Kong and London.

In the 1980s, P&O sustained its operations in Australia with the help of SS Oriana, which was transferred to the Australian market. In 1988, P&O Group purchased Sitmar Cruises in 1988, after which it branded TSS Fairstar under the P&O Holidays Australia banner

In 1986 Brian was one of the innovators who masterminded the privatisation of Malaysia's Port Klang terminal with P&O Australia as manager and

P&O Maritime managed the design and build of the research supply and expedition icebreaker Aurora Australis, which is owned, managed and crewed by P&O Maritime.

In 1993 the Baillies took up full time residence in Maleny in the farm house they had bought in 1976.

A major renovation took place and the house became the Baillie's haven, having views along the entire Sunshine Coast coastline.

Over the next decade the Baillies enjoyed Maleny life and the Maleny Community.

Brian sadly passed away at home in Maleny on the 22nd September, 2014.

His Funeral Service was held on Wednesday the 8th October 2014 at the Maleny Catholic Church, and this was followed by his burial at the Witta Cemetery, Witta Queensland.

Should this happen then Maleny Dairies will keep bringing more local dairy farms on board thus keeping them going financially.

GREAT NEWS!!!!! Wednesday Night Bowls will resume on Wednesday 14th October 2020.

The club's Games Director Miles Allen will be making contact with those of you who have previously played encouraging you to once again join in the fun of Wednesday Night Bowls.

Given the last night games were played was in March of this year there will be some fine-tuning required to ensure a successful return.

Miles has indicated that for the first two weeks, 14th and 21st respectively, there will be an opportunity to confirm team numbers and their composition whilst ensuring both weeks are as sociable and as fun-filled as possible.

The 'competition' will kick-off in earnest on 28th October for an 8 week season finishing in midDecember.

Coinciding with the recommencement of Wednesday Night Bowls will be the return to keg beer, small bottles of white and red wine, your favourite soft drinks and the famous burgers.

The cost of the evening will be $17.00. This will cover the cost of the game and the lovingly prepared burger. Once again raffles will be held and prizes awarded.

To conform with COVID - 19 Safe Plans, under which the club must operate, bowlers will receive their food in individual take away containers.

You are encouraged to arrive by 5.45pm so that you are able to

sing in, make your payment and possibly purchase a refreshment and be ready for food service at 6.00pm for the commencement of bowls at 6.30pm.

The added responsibilities as a result of social distancing requirements and recording attendance details will add to the workload of the volunteer workers and thus an earlier arrival will help to ensure operations go smoothly for all concerned.

Ingredients 450 g potatoes halved peeled 1/4 cup milk 25 g butter chopped 2 tsp olive oil 2 x 400 g scotch fillet steak (beef) 1 eschalot finely chopped 1 tsp fresh thyme 1 tbs marsala 1/3 cup thickened cream 25 g gorgonzola crumbled 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce 200 g green beans

Equipment •

1 frying pan

1 potato masher

•

2 saucepan

Scotch Fillet Steak with Blue Cheese Sauce and Mashed Potatoes Step 1 Place potato in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Season with salt. Bring to the boil. Boil for 30 minutes or until tender.

Step 2 Drain well. Return to pan over low heat for 1 minute to dry out. Remove from heat. Add milk and butter and mash using a potato masher until smooth. Season.

Step 3 Meanwhile, season steaks. Heat oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook steaks for 1-2 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to a plate. Cover with foil to keep warm.

Step 4 Add eshalot and thyme to same pan and cook, stirring, over medium heat for 3 minutes or until softened.

Step 5 Add marsala and cook, scraping base of pan, for 1 minute or until wine evaporates.

Step 6 Add cream and cheese and stir until combined. Cook for 2 minutes or until sauce starts to simmer and thickens slightly. Add Worcestershire sauce. Season with pepper.

Step 7 Meanwhile, cook beans in a small saucepan of boiling salted water for 4 minutes or until tender. Drain well.

Step 8

Serve steaks with mash and beans. Drizzle over sauce.

Bring the steaks to room temperature before cooking.

Big thank you to Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club for letting the group use their club house roof to train It’s a vital part for our members to keep the knowledge and skills update in preparation for the coming storm season. One never knows what is around the corner so it is necessary to keep all skills “up to date”.

From this you can see that it is important for rural landholders to ensure that they carry out appropriate maintenance at the appropriate time of year to reduce the possibility of fire, or ensuring that any fire can be controlled.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts On driving around the area one can only be dismayed by the amount of litter seen along the sides of the roads. One is left to wonder just how it gets there. Is there some mean fairy going about in the dead of night carefully planting it just so that the roadsides look untidy?

Litter is bad for animals and people. Plastic waste suffocates, disables and kills thousands of animals each yearLittering is one of those things that no upside Litter makes an area look dirty and uncared for, unpleasant to be in and less likely to be used and enjoyed by the community. Litter dropped in streets pollutes areas and can end up in our waterways.

Great news for the Maleny Pool!

Local State Member of Parliament, Mr. Andrew Powell has had a number of representations made bringing his my attention the Maleny Pool.

The Maleny Swimming Pool has always been a very high priority within the Maleny Community, not least from the late Mrs. Joyce Newton. Mr Powell said, “Your community spirit in Maleny never ceases to amaze me!”

As a result he has worked with the Maleny State School principal as well as the Department of Education to waive fees, undertake maintenance and prepare the pool for the oncoming warm season which are fast approaching

Maleny is very fortunate in that from time to time service clubs and some individuals take it upon themselves to tidy up roadsides. It is unfortunate that they have to do this as it would be just so easy if everyone did the right thing and not throw their waste out of their vehicles onto roadways for somebody else to clean up.

Cigarette butts are a big problem for the environment and arguably are more of a threat than any other litter item as they take so long to break down.

How much effort does it take to not make the mess in the first place - just a case of thoughtless and selfish people who care little about their surrounds.

It is extremely caring when the area when the faeces is left on an area that is used by others as a playground or sporting area.

He continued, “Councillor Winston Johnston Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council and I have worked to make the regular operating payments to the swimming club upfront rather than arrears. As a result, the swimming club will shortly be advertising for a pool manager and it wont be long before the pool is open again!”

Failing to do the right thing with respect to animal faeces is a health his for others - others who may just happen to be someone close to the offender.

“Having this matter finalised with a very satisfying solution needs thanks to be given everyone who wrote to me, Cr Winston Johnston and the Department of Education.” said Mr. Powell.

Please, always do your part to dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully and over time your actions will make all the difference.

Maleny Show Society Maleny Show Grounds its a new fence

Maleny Show Society volunteers have been busy working on the erection of a new front fence at Maleny Showground. The Sunshine Coast Council owns the grounds.

The new fence materials were funded

by Ex-councillor Jenny McKay and work is now being carried out by from left to right in the photo, Ian Aldred, Colin Sinclair, Ron Tincknell, Matthew Howard, Dean Power and David Beard.

Apex on the Front Foot

Another Saturday meant another concrete project for the members of the Apex Club of Maleny.

Here they are helping the Maleny Cricket Club to fill in concrete to the practice pitches at the facilities on the Maleny Showgrounds.

The Maleny Cricket Club sincerely thanks the Maleny Apex lads and Weston Earthmoving for these much needed renovations to their training nets.

Absent on the day was another volunteer, Rick White.

Don’t forget that this weekend is the Maleny Spring Fair which is at the Maleny Show-grounds on Saturday October 3, 2020, between 8.30am and 4pm It is being hosted by the Maleny Garden Club so please come along to the Showgrounds Pavilion for plants from garden club members as well as plants from nurseries.

Sustainable Living & Gardens With Grahame Staines

Sustainable Living & Aquaponics ESTABLISH A NUTRIENT RICH GARDEN BED WITHOUT SOIL OVER KIKUYU GRASS The two most common reasons for not growing vegetables, that are bought up in conversation with me, are “my soil is no good” or “I can’t stop the weeds and grass”.

Twice now I have established a garden with no soil, that I have made over kikuyu grass using nothing on the ground to stop the grass growing through the bed and both times I’ve ended up with a nutrient rich, weed free, grass free garden producing a wide variety of organic vegetables.

This process is possible to achieve with very little labour and very little cost.

The procedure is as follows.

1.

Identify where you want your bed established.

2.

Mow the grass down in that area as low as possible with your hand mower or ride on.

3.

Lay a bed of cow manure down to cover the area.

This can be purchased bagged cow manure or cow manure from your local farmer. Wet or dry is suitable, just need a good coverage across the bed.

4.

Lay a bed of brown leaves down. Any leaves that breaks down well or any partly broken down leaf matter.

5.

Last layer is lawn clippings.

This layer can be one metre high. Keep layering on top every time you mow.

A few extra things to do and avoid as the bed breaks down.

Dig a spade edge around the bed 150mm deep.

This will stop all grass entering the bed.

Do not touch the bed, that is, turn the layers over, it isn’t necessary.

3.

Dig all of your kitchen waste into the bed, except oils, meat and dairy. Part the layers to bury the kitchen waste. If animals start digging the bed up, lay some mesh over the top, it won’t smell and in 3 or 4 days it will be gone. This will encourage worms into your bed.

4.

Water the bed intermittently to

keep the bed moist, but not wet.

Sunshine Coast Police warn of QPS phone number scam Local Police are warning residents about a scam using a Queensland Police Service (QPS) phone number to legitimise a government or Australian Taxation Office (ATO) impersonation scam.

In this instance, the criminals are using a practice known as caller ID spoofing where they inappropriately manipulate the telephone network to indicate the incoming call is from a different number (in this case, a QPS number).

The scam starts when the criminal calls the victim and impersonates a government department.

They advise the victim that they have an outstanding fine or fee with them (for example, the ATO).

While this type of scam has been doing the rounds for some time, police are concerned this version of the scam has an additional layer which may result in more members of the community falling victim.

The second part of the scam involves the criminal calling the victim from what appears to be a trusted or well-known government phone number and impersonating an employee from the organisation, in this case, a police officer to legitimise the scam.

The criminal posing as a police officer threatens the victim with arrest or states they will commence legal action before demanding a form of payment.

Queensland Police officers will never: ✤

Contact you to ask for your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or bank details

Ask you to transfer money out of your account

✤

Ask you to withdraw cash to hand over to them for safekeeping

✤

Send someone to your home to collect cash, cards or your PIN

Police have commenced enquiries regarding this scam and the illegal use of the police number.

Truthful Jones says that he has new neighbours and a few days ago their two boys were playing football when one of the boys was attacked by a vicious Rottweiler.

Thinking quickly, the other boy rips a board off the nearby fence, wedges it down the dog’s collar, and twists, breaking the dog’s neck.

A local News reporter hears about the incident and rushes over to interview the boy. “Young Lions Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal,” he starts writing in his notebook.

But I’m not a Lions fan,” the little hero replies. “Sorry, since we are in Maleny just assumed you were,” says the reporter, and he starts again.

“Bronco’s Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack,”! he jots in his notebook.

“I’m not a Bronco fan either,” the boy responds.

The reporter starts again: “Maroons supporter risks life in heroic rescue” “I’m not a Maroons fan either,” the boy responds.

“I assumed everyone in Maleny was either for the Lions, Broncos or the Maroons. What team do you cheer for?” the reporter asks.

“We are both from Sydney and I’m a Blue’s fan,” the boy says.

THIS Weeks JOKE The old lady handed her bank card to a bank teller and said, “I would like to withdraw $500” . It couldn’t have happened in Maleny as most banks have now closed here.

Ma'am, you have $35 million in your account and our bank doesn't have so much cash currently.

Could you make an appointment and come again tomorrow?

The teller told her, “For withdrawals less than $2,000, please use the ATM.”

The old lady then asked how much she could withdraw immediately.

The old lady wanted to know why.

The teller told her any amount up to $250,000.

The teller returned her bank card and irritably told her, “These are the rules. Please leave if there is no other matter. There is a line behind you.”

"Well, please let me have $250,000 now", she requested. The teller did so quickly, then handed it very friendly and respectfully to her elderly client.

The old lady remained silent for a few seconds, then handed the card back to the teller and said, “Please help me withdraw all the money I have.”

The old lady put $500 in her bag and asked the teller to deposit the balance of $249,500 back into her account.

The teller was astonished when she checked the account balance. She nodded her head, leaned down and respectfully told her, “My apologies

Moral of the story is “Don't be difficult with old people, they spent a lifetime learning the skills.”

Sunday afternoon drive!

Take this lazy Sunday drive to Imbil, just about 45 minutes from Maleny. Enjoy a couple at the pubs or take away cafes. Take a trip up to Boorumba Dam.

nly about 45 minutes drive from Maleny is the rural township of Imbil.

With a population of only about 1000 it still has that rural country Queensland feel.

The town takes its name from the Imbil pastoral run which was named 1857 by the pastoralists Clement Francis Lawless and Paul Lawless. Imbil is a Kabi word referring to the bamboo vine, and is also used to refer to a lagoon below the Imbil station house.

Imbil is the largest town in the Mary Valley and is the gateway to Borumba Dam which is about 20 minutes drive to the north east of Imbil. Lake Borumba is perfectly tailored to swimming, boating, water-skiing and fishing.

Imbil State Forest joins the town and provides immediate access to magnificent forests, deep gorges, spectacular views, walking tracks, scenic drives and grassy camp sites near rainforests and mountain streams.

Imbil’s early history came as a result of gold being discovered in 1851 by J.C. Bidwell. This was short lived until a second find in 1868 along the creek flats between Bellbird Habitat to the present town of Imbil, along which is now called Diggins Road. This led to the establishment of a shanty town and extensive diggings in the area - now Imbil.

Following the failure of the gold diggings the areas economy turned to agricultural throughout the Mary Valley.

The timber industry began in the 1850s with the arrival of the cedar-getters. Today the area has large reserves of soft timber feeding a local saw mill.

What does the photo to the left have to do with Maleny? How many of you can tell us where and when it was taken?

For those who are more recent arrivals to Maleny the photo was taken during the construction of the Baroon PocketDam which is on Obi Obi Creek.

Baroon Pocket Dam was constructed at the head of a local area known as The Narrows on Obi Obi Creek in 1988 and completed in 1989.

It was a joint venture of the then Maroochy and Caloundra Shire Councils to provide a domestic water supply for the Sunshine Coast.

Since the 1st January 2013 the dam has been under the control of SEQ Water. It is an ungated dam, meaning that when it reaches 100 per cent capacity, water flows over the spillway and safely out of the dam.

When full the dam holds 61,000 ML of water.

An intake tower allows water to flow from the dam through a 2.5-metre (8.2 ft) wide, 2.5kilometre (1.6 mi) long tunnel under the Blackall Range to the Landers Shute Water Treatment Plant on the outskirts of Palmwoods.

Who uses this water Water really is a basic necessity of life. Without water we cannot exist.

Processed water from Baroon Pocket Dam is now supplied to residences and businesses in the Sunshine Coast area as well as to Brisbane areas.

The plant operates 7 days a week - 24 hours has a treatment capacity of 140 megalitres per day.

The Landers Shute plant utilises both hydroelectric and solar power. The hydroelectric system has a maximum output of 324 kilowatts. Solar generates around 3 kilowatts of energy per day.
