Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter “Maleny Players Present…..” Maleny Players presents Playhouse Creatures by April De Angelis, directed by Catherine Steer-O'Neill. (By arrangement with ORiGiNTM Theatrical on behalf Samuel French, A Concord Theatricals Company.) Playhouse Creatures is a comical but at times, dramatic tale highlighting the dif culties of the rst English actresses overcoming regulation, lack of rights in the theatre, audience expectation of sexual performance, the right to become shareholders and playwrights. Before the Restoration of Charles II, women were not permitted to perform in English commercial theatres. Most of the problem of trying to get audiences to
accept the sight of women on stage lay with the male audience. Sometimes literally.... as some actresses did have lower moral standards but many were serious about their art and did it without becoming a mistress for extra perks and pay. Audiences expected nudity and frolics onstage but the actresses wanted to act in real plays and wanted to play the female roles in the plays by Shakespeare for instance. Once they started this revolutionary change, they could not be stopped, hence today we see women upon our stages. A fabulous play from the Maleny Players, offered in an intimate theatre setting in the heart of beautiful Maleny. This play contains Strong language/sexual references MA 15 + . Performances are on Friday April 22/23/24/29/30 and 1st May. Evening performances 7pm Matinees each Sunday 2pm www.malenyplayers.org or directly at https://wwwtrybooking.com/BYEJX
