Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter Comet Leonard from the Maleny Observatory his amazing photo of Comet Leonard was taken by Brisbane Astronomical Society’s Will Conlon at the Maleny Observatory (situated at the Maleny Golf Club) on January 2nd 2022. The comet had been visible through binoculars for a few weeks prior, before passing behind the sun – but it won’t be back for another 80,000 years, making this photograph, described as ranking as one of the best in the world, all the more remarkable. The astronomers were lucky enough to experience their rst cloudless, moonless night in months on Jan 2nd, making it a great evening for star gazing and photography. Light pollution readings taken that night at Maleny and throughout the Obi Obi valley con rmed that our region is still the darkest place in Coastal SE Qld and ranks with some of the darkest skies in the world.

2022 Stargazing The astronomers will recommence Public Stargazing on Saturday March 5th 2022, weather permitting, with Society member nights continuing throughout summer.

On moonless nights the astronomers are able to chase all the deep sky objects not visible on moonlit nights. Why not become a member and join them - at the same time, supporting what they do? No equipment or knowledge is required, just curiosity! Find out more and keep up to date with all their activities at: https://www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastAstronomyQLD_

No Plans to Extend School Year The Queensland Government Health Minister Yvette D'Ath says the 2022 school year won’t be extended, with revised lesson plans allowing the full curriculum to be delivered to Queensland students over the condensed semester. This means an extra week proposed for Term 4 will not be necessary. Almost 13 per cent of Queensland's 5-11 year olds have now received a Covid vaccine, with the state's Education Minister Grace Grace explaining there has been a positive response in the decision to delay the school year. Ms Grace also says the planned extra week to the school year would now not be needed, following revised lesson plans and talks with education stakeholders.
