Tickets are still available for this Drive-In Blues Concert at the Maleny Showgrounds this Saturday! You’ll need tickets for your car to get in to rock on with these fantastic bands and musicians, including super star rocker Kevin Borich.

Maleny local legend Kevin Borich recorded his rst single with Astor Records at age 12 and his music career has now spanned 56 years.

Borich is a quintessential stalwart in the Australian and New Zealand music scene, Penning hits such as 'Gonna See My Baby Tonight' and 'No Turning Back’.

Kevin Borich is a founding member of New Zealand's hit band the La De Da's, The Kevin Borich Express & Australia's legendary The Party Boys.

It’s great value too - cram as many as you (legally!) can into your car and see all 4 bands for just $50 per car.

The bands will be videoed

onto a massive LED screen with state of the art technology and FM sound transmitted to your vehicle.

With restrictions eased a little, you’ll be able to eat, drink, dance and be merry in and beside your car. Yummy hot food will be available, with catering by Maleny Hotel.

Bushrangers Football Club The Maleny Bushrangers Rugby Union Club has announced that their 2020 senior men’s team has had to withdraw from competition because of COVID 19 conditions and the relocation of a number of players.

It is expected that the team will be back for the 2021 season.

The club is elding an U17 girls team. Training commences on Thursday July 16th and the rst game will be played on July 24th. Under 17 girls coach, Greg Engle said any people still wishing to join the team should contact the club on 0409053537.

The club trains at the Witta Recreation Club grounds.

A New Of cial Guinness World Record

We did it! The Australasian Dark Sky Alliance outreach group, headed by Dr Ken Wishaw, one of our local astronomers, recently organized a successful world record attempt to learn more about, and measure light pollution. The attempt was successful, with the new world record now of cially recorded.

If your club or organisation is an associate member of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club then you can publicise your club results and news in this, our “Community Billboard”.

Over 10,000 people from 49 countries participated. More exciting news that emerged is that the data collected from South East Queensland shows that Maleny and the Obi Obi Valley is the LAST dark sky region on the SEQ coast.

Energy Queensland has just made available a range of low light pollution street lights and ttings but unfortunately, they are not the default choice. We need these in South East Queensland in general, and Maleny in particular, so now the evidence is in, we all need to lobby for protecting our endangered heritage of dark skies.

The Australasian Dark Sky Alliance (ADSA) is an independent non-pro t charity formed to educate the public and policymakers about night environment conservation. Light pollution is the fastest growing pollutant around the globe, with scienti c research showing an average increase year-on-year of more than 2%.

First match back post Covid tennis shutdown - what a great day out!

Remember, resilience is not a trait that people either have or don’t have – it is developed through the involvement of thoughts, behaviours and actions, all of which can be learned and developed in anyone.

Rewards of RESILIENCE As one of the rst tenets listed in our Maleny State High School’s Mission and Values, resilience is a vital skill for navigating life’s ups and downs.

The de nition of resilience in the Oxford Dictionary states it as: 1 : The capacity to recover quickly from dif culties; toughness.

TIP : Support them to build resilience by guiding them to ask these questions: (source: Kids Help Line)

2 : The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.

What can I do to get back on track?

Resilience is the psychological strength to cope with pressure, setbacks, calamities and a range of hardships that confront us in life. When life situations get out of whack, resilience is the one value and ability we need the most to get us through challenging times. This makes resilience an important life skill.

I can’t control everything, so what is in my control?

Can I change something I’m doing to make things better?

•

What can I learn from this?

•

Who can help?

•

How can I move forward?

According to Beyond Blue, resilience is shaped partly by the individual characteristics we are born with (our genes, temperament and personality) and partly by the environment we grow up in — our family, community and the broader society. While there are some things we can’t change, such as our biological makeup, there are many things we can change.

Bottom line: resilience is not entirely genetic. Resilience is built.

Resilience is essential for our mental health, irrespective of our age or socio-economic background. Studies show that young people with greater resilience are better able to manage stress, which is a common (and often rst) response to challenges and dif cult events, whether experienced in the school, home or social setting.

John Dabell (former school teacher and now writer and author of “Every Day is a School Day”) explains that resilience is at the very heart of wellbeing and is made up of the 7 C's of Resilience : competence, con dence, connection, character, contribution, coping and control.

Supporting children and teens develop social and emotional skills through these 7 C’s paves the way for success in both school and life generally.

Here are some things everyone can do to develop their own resilience (source: Kids Help Line) The fact is, things can go wrong when we least expect it, and the peaks and valleys of life can be emotionally tiring.

Our resilience can help us not only cope with and manage the presenting challenge, but also develop our ability to accept the unchangeable and bounce back … stronger than before.

Maleny RSL Friday night Social Meals are Back

At last we are able to eat together again, albeit 20 at a time, and share our lockdown stories but not our viruses.

5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop News Now that we are well and truly in to winter there will be a change in our regimental training schedule.

Museum open at the same time to allow the public to explore our museum. There is a fascinating collection of Boer War era Light Horse equipment bout to become a future new display in the Beersheba Museum.

Our next training session will be on Saturday 25th July commencing at 11.00 am on the Ziza Field on the Maleny Precinct.

Around Division 5 with Cr Winston Johnston

Since the 2020/21 Sunshine Coast Council budget was handed down on 25 June, I have received con rmation of additional funds to be expended within Division 5.

During this nancial year there will be approximately $1.48 million spent on Hunchy Road at Palmwoods, funded by council in partnership with the Australian Government via the Black Spot Road Safety Program.

and $200,000 to upgrade the roads and a large solar power system at the Maleny Showgrounds.

I would like to extend my congratulations to these two groups on receiving this funding and I look forward to seeing the nished projects.

In an endeavour to keep everyone informed, I am placing on my FB page all development applications and decisions made in relation to Div 5. In addition, there is information on council’s Budget, Grants, before and after photos of various works carried out in the division and many other items of interest.

Now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing slightly, I am at long last able to get out and about more within the division and would welcome the opportunity to attend functions, events and meetings with the various organisations I represent.

Additionally, the Queensland Government has con rmed the allocation of further funds under the Works for Queensland program, with $500,000 to upgrade amenities at the Palmwoods AFL grounds

The Maleny Film Society is screening again with limited numbers and a COVID-19 safe plan.

General Screenings and Members only Screenings will be running with smaller audience numbers.

Members are reminded to book early to avoid disappointment. Book at the Maleny Visitor Information Centre. Bookings for each lm will open up the morning after the previous lm. Any remaining seats will be available for non-members at the door prior to screening.

The next screening will be on July 27th with a matinee at 3p.m. and an evening screening at 7.15p.m. The movie on show will be “The Good Liar”.

Imagine their delight when the Friends of Pattemore House discovered a wood plane that once belonged to Maleny pioneer, Francis Dunlop (Jr) in a box of tools, kindly donated by Ron Hankinson. He is a Dunlop descendant who married Judy, a Pattemore descendant.

Francis Dunlop was also the rst treasurer of the Masonic Lodge in Maleny, that was originally named Dunlop Lodge in his honour in 1913.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Musings from a newly minted croquet player

The division 4 championship kicked off to an interesting beginning on Thursday with Priscilla Vickers and her new terminator mallet beating Wallace Roy 9 -3 in the opening match.

He is attempting hoop 4 on lawn 1in style –good stance, backswing and focussed on the back of the ball. It is no surprise that he successfully made the hoop.

In the afternoon Helen Uhlmann was defeated by Wallace 3 –11. It is heartening to see such erce competition in this division.

Priscilla and Wallace played a practice game on Sunday with rain looming to nish 10 all. Ken Barker and Vince Carbery could not resist the lawn and irted with the imminent rain to play a shortened game where Ken ended up ahead 21 –4.
