Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter “History of the RSL Maleny Hall” Standing gracefully by the Obi Obi Creek as if it has been there forever, it may surprise you to learn that the well-loved Maleny RSL Hall was brought, Meccano-like, piece by piece, from Maryborough and re-erected where it stands today. It was purchased from the Air Force for £2,000. It’s a great story, recorded by RSL historian Frank Beattie on the RSL website and reproduced here. https://rslmaleny.org.au/rsl-hall/hall-history/ The land where on which the Maleny RSL sub-branch building stands was originally part of a parcel of land selected and purchased by Francis Dunlop, who was

granted title to 160 acres to build a homestead in 1880. The land was returned to the crown in 1896. In 1938 a memorandum of agreement was drawn up between Mr William Burnett (owner at the time of the Maleny Hotel) and the three trustees of the then RSSAILA (Returned Soldiers Sailors and Airmen’s Imperial League of Australia). The agreement called for the trustees to maintain the land in a clean condition, not sell the land without prior written approval of Mr Burnett, and pay a yearly rental of one shilling for ten years. On the 28th January 1946, building forms were obtained from the Department of War and Industry
