Maleny District Sport & Recreation Club Community Newsletter From Maleny Redbacks to Cricketing Superstar Nick Selman commenced his cricketing journey with the Maleny Cricket Club as a junior Redbacks, rising through the ranks to the lower grades at the Glasshouse Districts CC. Nick quickly progressed through to 1st Grade with the Rangers and then on to the Sunshine Coast Scorchers Nick earned youth representative honours for Queensland at both cricket and Australian Rules. He represented Queensland in 2012-13 In the U17 National Championships and U19's in 2014-2015.

Seeking higher honours, In 2015 Nick moved to Kent and played 2nd XI. Opportunity knocked and a contract secured with Glamorgan in November 2015, where he's spent six seasons.

In the weekend of 15th January 2022, Nick, often described as an 'old school batsman', brought up 4000 runs in 1st Grade with his unbeaten innings of 137. A fabulous milestone to be acknowledged; congratulations Nick!

Maleny Men’s Shed News The Mens Shed operates on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8am to midday.

Men of all ages, backgrounds and interests are welcome. Activities include woodworking, metalworking and blacksmithing. One of the popular activities is the making of “Condamine cow bells” which was introduced by the late member, Kevin Howell.

Maleny Mens Shed is a place for Maleny men to get together, enjoy some handson activities, make new friends and talk about "men's business”.

Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club - Come & Try Day Local, Jared Ashcroft invites interested BMX riders to visit the Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club at 141 Connection Road, Glenview. The club would like to see lots of new faces for Hinterland BMX Clubs ‘Come and Try’ day on January 30th, 2022!

The club would like to welcome anyone wanting to learn about BMX racing to a come and try under the guidance of professional coaches Dirk Winter and Harry Phillips at a session between 2.00p.m and 2.40pm. The club runnings including club coaching with James resumes back on Tuesday the 1st February..

Smart Living Society Reaches Out

Are you struggling to nd affordable rental housing in Maleny to work and / or continue living here? Alternatively, do you know of someone who has been forced to leave Maleny for this reason.

Some of these people have been forced to move further a eld to nd affordable rental accommodation. The impact of this is decimating to them and to their family, friends and to local businesses and community groups.

Greg Williams, a founding and passionate Director of Smart Living Society Limited, says “There has always been a shortage of rentals in Maleny but never before to the current extent, and at such high prices. A recent report commissioned by Well Home Loans had just one property out of 612 rentals available for more than 21 days, whilst weekly rentals for houses increased by an alarming $150 per week in Maleny".

We know there are many local residents who have rented a home here for decades, who have made their lives in our town, who have contributed to our local community and are well known to other residents, however through no fault of their own, have become vulnerable.

This issue rst became apparent 6 years ago, becoming the catalyst for the formation of Smart Living Society Limited by a small number of local residents. Our goal was to create secure affordable rental housing in Maleny so long term residents do not have to leave town.

Smart Living Society Limited has subsequently been registered as a charitable organisation enabling donations to be tax deductible.

We are a dedicated bunch of local people who have been striving to accomplish our goal for several years and refuse to give up.

Our directors and members are all volunteers and our minimal administration expenses are funded from raf es and local charity events. Therefor 100% of donations are automatically banked into our charitable fund for the purpose of creating affordable rental housing Is this something that you are passionate about? We welcome your input and ideas. So please come and join us!

Over the Blackall Range – The Dairying Zone Here’s a great article, unearthed in TROVE,

published in The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866 - 1939) on Sat 28 Jul 1906.

A

nother ne centre is Teutoberg, and on top of the range from Landsborough is Maleny where there is a co-operative dairy factory and a co-operative store, both doing well.

About the year 1876 this district was thrown open for selection, when Messrs. Win. Grigor and Sons. John and Wm. Simpson, Page. Francis Dunlop, J. M'Carthy, Joseph Eyles, and the late Isaac Burgess took up land and commenced timber-getting— cedar and beech.

In 1887 the unalienated land was thrown open, when nearly all the area left was taken up. These settlers commenced to do pioneering work, and cleared the land of dense scrub, burnt the logs, and planted corn and other crops.

But farming as well as saw-milling was unremunerative on account of the dif culty of getting produce to the nearest railway station. Two sawyers started work, but were compelled to give up for the same reason.

Then Joseph M'Carthy and the Hon. A. J. Thynne called the settlers together to consider the advisability of placing a cooperative butter factory at Maleny.

This was opened in December 1904, and is now doing well.

Since the factory started, many hundreds of acres of very dense scrub has been felled, and the land prepared for cropping and dairying.

One great advantage that the whole of this district possesses is that little conservation of fodder is required. The rainfall averages 70in. or 80in. spread over the whole year (and that accounts a great deal for the bad roads).

English and other exotic grasses grow well ; paspalum dilatatum, which is seen everywhere, provides abundant summer feed, while cocksfoot, prairie, Texas blue, and Rhodes grasses provide excellent winter pasturage.

Not only are these good feed for dairy stock, but their yield is very heavy. Some of the young and enthusiastic residents talk of carrying two cows to the acre, but if they keep a beast well on two acres they will do nicely.

The Maleny Butter Factory is treating the milk of about 400 cows, owned by some forty suppliers. Messrs. Cooke and M'Carthy are the largest

dairymen, and are milking about twenty-seven cows each.

At present the output is about 15 cwt. per week, but last January 25cwt. per week was put through.

The industry is, however, developing, scrub is being cleared in all directions, and next year a far larger number of cows will be milked. The good grasses, splendid water, and high altitude all assist in the production of a high-class butter, and only a few weeks ago a report was received by the manager from London, stating that it was the best Queensland butter the rm had seen on the English market, and suggesting that regular monthly shipments should be made.

In this respect natural advantages count, as in the case of, Alstonville, on the Northern Rivers, which has a high reputation even amongst all its rivals.

A few months ago a co-operative store was started in conjunction with the factory, and has proved a boon and blessing to the district as well as a source of income to the factory.

What is Maleny Parkrun? It’s a 5km trail, 6.40 am for 7.00 am start every Saturday and you must register, just once, to be a participant as many times as you like - and its all FREE! Maleny Visitor Information Centre Says Farewell to Lea and Brownie

The Maleny Visitor Information Centre says a big ‘Thank you’ for your contribution to the the community. “You have been a valuable information source for MVIC, providing us with much fabulous fodder to pass onto locals and visitors alike over your 17 years with Glasshouse Country & Maleny News”.

Likewise you have published our stories and for this we are eternally grateful. You have adapted to the changing world through your online publication and, as such, have kept the good oil owing through all this COVID stuff!

This ground offers camping year-round (maximum 3 night stay), except during major events & seasonal blackout dates.

Road Widening - Obi Lane North Maleny resident or a participant of one of the many venues on the

Residents and users of Obi Lane and Porters Lane, North Maleny are now well used to the activities that signalled the road widening works have commenced by the Sunshine Coast Council.

A trucks and machinery depot has been constructed in nearby Obi Lane, and the Stop Go staff will be kept on their toes along Obi Lane itself.

Maleny Community Precinct and also be patient with the road workers and traf c controllers.

Works are anticipated to be completed in March, weather permitting of course.

The Woodies “A Happy New Year to one and all from The "Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild Inc” or better known as "The Woodies”. The club is located at the Montville Sports Ground and is open with all Covid Protocols in place, including social distancing and mask wearing.

(In fact, with the mask wearing (growl, growl) we are thinking about starting “A Woodies Carnival, each year“ (watch out Venice).

Anyone over the age of 18, interested in woodworking, woodturning, carving, box making or timber milling, is welcome to come along and have a look at what we have to offer.

Our work shed is open 8am to 12noon Monday to Saturday, with Wednesday opening, extended until 3pm. Hope to see you all at the Woodies Shed.

Fitness and Well Being with Chanet Kromberg I hope you are all having a good start to your week so far! Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles is what I am all about! Just a reminder that my group classes for all ages started on Monday 15th November at the Maleny District Sport & Rec Club, situated at the bottom of Parklands Drive on the beautiful Maleny Precinct.

I am offering exible and fun tness options, and cater to all age groups and levels of tness, holding classes in the morning and afternoon/ evening. My classes include: After school tness classes Mat Pilates Strength & Power BoxFit/HIIT I specialise in children’s tness, from grades 1 12 - see my website for the details or check out the timetable below. Beginner Tai Chi Classes on Maleny Precinct Tai Chi Quan for Body, Mind and Spirit. Learn this ancient Doaist exercise from Ahtee Chia who trained with the foremost Masters in Australia and China, and who has been teaching for more than 40 years.

A new block of classes will be starting up on Tuesday 25th Jan, 8.00 am at the Maleny District Sports and Recreation grounds on the Maleny Precinct.

It is an outdoor venue with shelter under a deep verandah in case of rain.

The venue is at the end of Parkland Drive, off Porters Lane, North Maleny.

There are still 2022 Rotary Calendars available!

This is the 15th year for the calendar, which is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Maleny, and its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning. When you purchase one, you are supporting the Maleny Rotary Club, that in turn allows them to support our local community needs. They are great gifts for family and friends, especially those interstate and overseas.

The Range Croquet Club - Maleny Thursday 20th looked good for a while.

Several people, Ken Barker, Donna Manning, Sarah Widin, Wallace Roy, and Lynette Evans arrived, waited for gaps in the showers to decrease, chatted, then waited some more, before nally abandoning any hope of play.

Training day on Saturday 22nd was much livelier with several people on the lawn enjoying the good weather of the morning. John McCarthy a former member of the club, club treasurer, very strong player, and a true gentleman of the sport, paid us a visit as well. We had a

great time chewing the fat, yarning over the old days.

Games resumed on Sunday 23rd with beautiful weather and freshly mown lawns. Val Carbery and Sarah graced lawn 2 drawing with 13 hoops apiece in a game which seemed to have its ups and downs to the casual observer. On the same lawn Donna and Ken could only manage a handful of hoops before Ken retired early having scored just two hoops and Donna ve.

On lawn 1 Helen Andrews and Stuart Craig teamed up to score 7 hoops while restricting Vince Carbery to 6. Wallace Roy, after a period out of play has returned to put up a good show against Lynette losing 7 – 17.

In the attached photo Stuart has cause to be happy. He has placed yellow in front of hoop 2 in a position where he can run it. As well as that he has his partner ball close by to roquet afterwards.

Play days: Thursday and Sunday 2.00 pm for 2.30. Contact Sarah for other days. Please arrive at 2 pm for games to be arranged at 2.15 and started by 2.30.

Coaching: is available on Saturday mornings at 8 am.
