A sad couple of weeks all around for the Maleny

community

August 2025 didn’t go off with a happy note with the news that Conondale and Maleny patriarch, Mrs Glenda Braden, had passed away on July 27th. She and her late husband, Kevin, had long lived in both Conondale and Maleny and were Glenda, nee Watson and Kevin Braden, were from Conondale, where they had a dairy farm and were famous for the Conondale school bus run prior to moving to Maleny. Glenda was beautifully farewelled by a large crowd of family members and long-time friends.

Then on the 8th of August, 2025, ex-local Councillor, Francis Raymond (Frank) Geritz, passed away. Frank, who has lived in Caloundra for a number of years, was previously a long-term Maleny resident. He previously had been a councillor with both the Landsborough Shire Council and remained when it was amalgamated into the Caloundra City Council.

His funeral will be at Gregson and Weight Funerals Home, Caloundra, on Monday, 25th August 2025, at 11:00 am.

Queensland and the Sunshine Coast lost a steadfast champion of our area with the sad passing of Mark McArdle on August th, 2025.

He has been incredibly active over sixteen years in the Queensland Parliament as the Member for Caloundra until he took the tough decision not to contest the 2020 State Election as a result of a continuing serious health problem. Even so, Mark continued lobbying for our area right up until his passing.

From 2012 to 2015, Mark was Queensland’s Minister for Energy and Water Supply, when he developed a plan to secure the state’s water supply and a plan to ensure a more resilient and cost-effective energy system.

At the time of publishing, no funeral details had been released. One thing all the above was that they were all very busy in their communities. Every community needs community members such as the three mentioned above to take those communities to higher levels of livability. R.I.P. all! And thanks.

Vicki Heading named Glasshouse Great!

We’re celebrating the remarkable individuals who make our community shine with their dedication, kindness, and hard work! This week, we proudly honour Glass House District Tennis Club President, Vicki Heading!

Born and raised in the Glasshouse Mountains, Vicki has spent many years working across both the Glasshouse and Maleny communities. From volunteering at hinterland events to serving on numerous committees, clubs, and associations, her passion for community is truly inspirational.

Vicky was part of the Maleny Swimming Club for 17 years, where all three of her now-grown children learned to swim. She also devoted 25 years to Maleny Quota alongside an amazing group of local women.

Second only to family, tennis has always held Vicki’s heart. She first picked up a racquet as a junior member at the Glass House Tennis Club and later joined the Maleny Tennis Club, playing an active role with the Maleny & District Tennis Association. After

Koala Surprise in Reesville!

A recent thermal drone survey has revealed something incredible — Reesville, just west of Maleny, is one of the most densely populated koala habitats in northern South East Queensland!

51 koalas were detected across just under 100 hectares of private land — a huge leap from previous estimates of 0–22 koalas per 100 hectares. As we head into koala breeding season which extends to between August and February, it’s a crucial time to help keep our furry friends safe. Koalas are on the move looking for love, so here’s how you can help.

Call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or your local wildlife rescue if you see a sick or injured koala. Slow down when driving through koala habitat areas. Report sightings (healthy or not) on the free QWildlife app.

On this day in history - August 15th

August 15th is Victory in the Pacific Dayor 'VP Day’. It's a date that Australians should never forget.

On 15 August 1945, Japan accepted the Allied Nations' terms of surrender following the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan Australia's Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, then announced that the war was over.

On VP Day, we remember Australia's war efforts from 1942 to 1945 in the Pacific region, including in Singapore, Borneo, Malaya, Papua, New Guinea and New Britain. Over 17,000 Aussie troops lost their lives while fighting in the war against Japan, some 8,000 of whom died in Japanese captivity.

Thoughts & Opinions

Juvenile recidivism

What causes such destructive behaviour?

As Queenslanders show real concern for juvenile offenders being incarcerated in Queensland Watch-houses, there is little apparent concern about why they need to be incarcerated at all. Why are so many juveniles not only turning to crime but are becoming serial recidivists?

Juvenile recidivism refers to the tendency of young offenders to re-engage in criminal behaviour after having been dealt with by the justice system. It is a significant concern for communities, as repeated offending not only impacts public safety but also limits the young person’s chances of rehabilitation and future opportunities.

A range of factors can contribute to juvenile recidivism. Social and environmental influences are often major drivers— youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, unstable family environments, or areas with high crime rates may have limited positive role models or support networks. Decades of research have documented the link between socioeconomic advantage and child wellbeing.

Education gaps and poor school engagement can also increase the likelihood of reoffending, as limited skills and qualifications restrict lawful employment options. School disciplinary policies rarely acknowledge the central role of family circumstances in contributing to a child’s challenging behaviour.

Peer influence plays a powerful role, with association with delinquent peer groups reinforcing criminal behaviours and normalising antisocial conduct. Mental health issues, substance abuse, and unresolved trauma further compound the problem, making it difficult for young people to break cycles of offending.

Inadequate rehabilitation programs or insufficient postrelease support can also lead to recidivism, as youths may return to the same circumstances that contributed to their original offences. Addressing juvenile recidivism requires early intervention, targeted support, and community reintegration strategies to offer genuine alternatives to reoffending.

Incarceration alone does not rehabilitate young people. It only exposes them to more violence. The emphasis should be on good science, primary prevention, and early intervention.

Truthful Jones says And he swears that it 100% true - No Bulls##t”

Truthful tells us that he recently went for a bike ride with a friend who was riding his Harley along a Victorian beach road when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and, in a booming voice, God said, "Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish."

The biker pulled over and said, "Build a bridge to Tasmania so I can ride over anytime I want."

God replied, "Your request is materialistic; think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind."

The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, "God, I wish that I, and all men, could understand women. I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy."

God replied: "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?"

Even the “Good Lord” knows his boundaries when it comes to allocating his miracles!

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is known for its durability, ease of use, and beautiful finish—but if you’re not handling it the right way, you could be using more than you need or shortening its shelf life. , Here are a few simple ways to make your Hard Wax Oil go further and work harder for you.

Apply Thin, Even Coats (Always)

Less is more when it comes to Hard Wax Oil. The formula is designed to penetrate and protect with two thin coats—no more, no less. Thick application won’t give you extra protection; in fact, it may lead to tackiness, uneven sheen, roller marks and longer drying times.

• Use a 4mm micro roller or a smooth coat brush

Stevie the Security Dog

at the Maleny Paint Shop enjoys gardening

Stevie the daschound spent most mornings in the families veggie patch, a raised garden teeming with tomatoes, lettuce, and silverbeet. His helper was an unlikely friend— Cyril, a three-metre-long carpet python with a fondness for sun baking near the zucchini. Stevie would keep Cyril from sleeping with a bossy bark.

Each morning, Reggie trotted down to the veggie garden sniffing the soil and chasing off any bold pigeons who dared eye the lettuce. Meanwhile, Cyril would slither out from under the porch and coil peacefully in the sunlight, watching the scene like a gentle guardian. Reckon they looked like the most unusual scarecrow in Maleny.

• Spread the oil thinly and evenly—don’t overload the surface

Applying thin means better coverage and a smoother finish—with less product used overall.

Thin it Out (If Needed)

Over time, if storing your Hard Wax Oil in the tin and that tin has been open for a while, Hard Wax Oil can thicken slightly due to the coating oxidising. If that happens, don’t toss it.

You can thin it with a small amount of White Spirits to return it to an ideal working consistency.

Reggie barked sharply if a possum rustled in the nearby fig tree. Once, he even chased a rogue rabbit clean out of the patch. And Cyril? He kept the mice at bay, silently patrolling the borders come nightfall. Together, the duo tended the garden like a small army. Not a leaf went unturned, not a slug unspotted. Stevie and Cyril grew the best veg in town—not that they had green thumb between them. This scaly snake. and stubby-tailed mates daschound were always proud of their garden!.

My Hints: Not all whites are white so consider carefully!

Choosing the right shade of white for your home may seem simple. In fact, it’s a lot trickier than you think. There’s white with hues of red, hues of blue, green, grey, yellow-it’s endless!

There are two distinct groups: cool whites or warm whites. Cool whites tend to suit more contemporary, modern homes with a lot of natural light and windows, while warmer whites suit those more traditional properties that may not have as much natural light.

It’s important to consider lighting when you’re selecting your paint. Take home some sample pots and experiment by painting several large pieces of cardboard and place them on different walls in the room that’s going to be painted and check the effects.

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

POWER OF ATTORNEY - WHEN AND WHY IS IT NEEDED?

With Tove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The purpose of appointing someone as your attorney is to ensure that you have someone decisions for you when you are unable to do yourself.

There can be a multitude of reasons why you will need someone else to act on your behalf – you may be travelling overseas where communication is difficult or you may be experiencing a serious health problem such as lengthy hospital stays or loss of mental capacity. This is where a Power of Attorney comes in. The grant of a Power of Attorney can either be made as a general grant for a particular purpose and for a particular time frame as long as the purpose of the grant does not relate to medical or personal matters; or as an enduring grant for an unlimited time frame for financial, personal and health matters.

It is important to distinguish between a grant of power of attorney and a will. A grant of power of attorney can only be used when the person granting the power is alive. Should that person die, then the grant of power of attorney ceases to be of effect and the Will takes over.

Everyone should consider appointing someone to act as their enduring attorney. The choice of an

attorney should be taken with a lot of care and thought and should be someone you have complete trust in. When appointing someone as your enduring attorney you can specify exactly in which circumstance that person will act as your attorney. An example is the circumstance where you have been assessed by a medical practitioner as having lost capacity. To remove someone as an attorney is also possible by you expressly revoking that power.

By appointing an enduring attorney you are protecting yourself against the possibility that should you one day lose capacity to manage your own affairs you will not put your financial position at risk. It is an insurance policy worth having!

Now is the time to start planting your veggies!

With winter almost gone and a warmer summer about to arrive then get those veggies in a bit earlier. Some vegetables to consider include; radish, beans: bush and climbing, beetroot, carrots: tom thumb, chillies, cucumbers, tomatoes, spring onions and squash and zucchinis are reasonably swift at producing too. The increasing amounts of warmth and light stimulate flowering and new growth in a wide variety of vegetables. To enjoy the fruit of your labours during summer, plant as soon as possible as it gets warmer. When growing in the ground prepare the soil by adding and digging through good quantities of organic matter such as, compost and well-rotted animal manures such as cow or chicken. Then rake your garden bed soil level and water well.

It is a good policy to start seeds off in pots. This makes more efficient use of limited growing space in your gardens.

Also remember that the ground can be can be very dry at this time of the year, with the westerly (EKKA) winds creating more problems for our poor plants, so keep an eye on water levels in the soils.

A downside of warming weather is increased pest activity. Keep an eye out for early infestations because controlling them now can help curb population buildup later.

The Pacific War, sometimes called the Asia–Pacific War or the Pacific Theatre, was the theatre of World War II fought between the Empire of Japan and the Allies in East and Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and Oceania.

The War in the Pacific brought the war to Australia's doorstep, with the mainland facing attacks and the threat of invasion. Key campaigns included Kokoda, Milne Bay, and Bougainville, with Australian forces also involved in Borneo.

Australia’s war in the Pacific between 1942 and 1945 was a defining chapter in the nation’s military history, as it faced direct threats to its own territory for the first time. Following the outbreak of war in the Pacific in December 1941, when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and swiftly advanced across Southeast Asia, Australia found itself thrust into the front line of a regional conflict that would reshape its military alliances and national psyche.

The fall of Singapore in February 1942 was a seismic event for Australia. Singapore had long been regarded as a vital British stronghold in the region, and its capture by Japanese forces shattered the illusion that Britain could protect Australia.

Over 15,000 Australian troops were taken prisoner during the campaign. In response, Prime Minister John Curtin made a historic shift in foreign policy, stating that “Australia looks to

America” for its future security. This marked a turning point in Australia’s strategic alignment, as U.S. forces under General Douglas MacArthur began operating from Australian soil.

The most immediate threat came with the bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942. On that day, 188 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town, ships in Darwin Harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor and Java during the war.

This was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power

on Australia, killing over 230 people and causing widespread panic.

In the months that followed, Japanese submarines attacked Sydney Harbour and ships along the Australian east coast. For many Australians, the war was no longer a distant European affair—it was on their doorstep.

coordinated campaigns to retake Japaneseoccupied territories. However, tensions occasionally surfaced over command structures and strategy. By the final stages of the war, Australian troops were involved in mopping-up operations in Borneo and other areas, tasks often viewed as secondary to major U.S. offensives in the Philippines and beyond.

Australia’s military played a critical role in halting Japanese expansion, particularly in the rugged jungles of New Guinea. The Kokoda Track campaign, fought between July and November 1942, became symbolic of Australian endurance and sacrifice. Facing a determined Japanese advance towards Port Moresby, poorly equipped and outnumbered Australian troops—many of them young conscripts from the Citizen Military Forces—fought in appalling conditions. Casualties ran high among the Australian units engaged in the defence of Port Moresby. New Guinea Natives worked as carriers, trekking up and down the arduous track, with heavy loads of food and ammunition going forward and wounded men on the way back. The Australians could never have sustained themselves without the labor of these locals.

Their eventual success helped prevent a possible Japanese invasion of mainland Australia.

Australian forces also played a leading role in the subsequent offensives to drive back the Japanese. Battles at Milne Bay, Buna, Gona, and Sanananda were brutal and costly but marked turning points in the Pacific war.

At Milne Bay in particular, Australian troops achieved the first outright defeat of Japanese land forces, a significant morale boost for the Allies.

Between 1943 and 1945, Australian forces increasingly operated alongside American troops in

At home, the war effort transformed Australian society. Conscription was extended, women entered the workforce in large numbers, and the economy shifted to support military production. Rationing, blackouts, and air raid drills became part of daily life, while the presence of tens of thousands of American servicemen altered the cultural landscape in many towns and cities.

The war in the Pacific formally ended with Japan’s surrender on 15 August 1945, known in Australia as Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day. The actual unconditional surrender was signed on September 2nd, 1945.

Over 17,000 Australians died fighting in the Pacific theatre, and many more were wounded or captured. The conflict left a lasting legacy, altering Australia’s sense of identity, its military posture, and its global relationships—particularly with the United States, which became its most important ally in the post-war world.

The War in the Pacific ending in 1945, culminating in Japan's surrender, had profound and lasting consequences, including the emergence of the United States as a global power, and significant

the wattle trees are beginning to f lower, National Wattle Day is a day of celebration in Australia on the first day of September each year which is the start of the Australian spring.

The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is Australia’s official floral emblem. There are more than 1,000 Acacia species and they grow across every state and territory of Australia

Not too long ago I noticed that the Wattyl trees along Landsborough Road were beginning to flower.

Working in a paint shop one sees lots of different people, mainly tradespeople. Whilst mixing paint for a painter recently I asked him if he knew the meaning of Wattle Day.

He replied; “Well, it was named after the well-known Australian paint brand

Although not an of holiday, Wattyl Day has become an industry-recognised occasion, often marked by gatherings at local hardware stores, TAFE colleges, or community sheds. Paint suppliers sometimes host barbeques, product demonstrations, giveaways, or training sessions to celebrate the profession and acknowledge the often under appreciated skill and craftsmanship involved in painting and surface preparation.”

I then said that National Wattle Day is celebrated on the 1st of September each year and holds special significance in Queensland, as it coincides with the time when many Acacia species – commonly known as wattles – are in full bloom across the state.

Other native Acacia species such as Acacia fimbriata (Brisbane wattle) also bloom around this time, showcasing Queensland’s floral diversity.

Communities across the state often mark the day with tree plantings, school activities, and environmental awareness events. In recent years, Wattle Day has also become a time to reflect on Australia’s shared identity, multicultural community, and the importance of caring for our

Did you Know that on?

The 15th of August, 1969, the Woodstock Festival opened in Bethel, New York, on Max Yasgur's Dairy Farm. Performers included Richie Havens, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, and Joan Baez. This first festival was all about peace and love.

Woodstock will be forever remembered by many in different ways depending on their personal experiences. For many, there were not enough toilet facilities or first-aid tents to accommodate such a huge crowd that turned up to experience this event.

Whilst many described the atmosphere at the festival as chaotic, there were surprisingly few episodes of violence, though one teenager was accidentally run over and killed by a tractor, and another died from a drug overdose.

Since the original Woodstock, there were three other Woodstock festivals in total: those being in 1969, 1994, and 1999. At the 1999 festival, three people died at the festival as extreme heat posed a big problem for the festival-goers.

There were also plans for a 'Woodstock 50' in 2019; however, it did not go ahead!

pring marks the start of the Sunshine Coast’s dry season –and bushfire season. Even after a wet winter, just one week of warm weather can dry out the ground and increase the risk of fires. The coast’s bushfire season officially starts in the dry season at the beginning of August.

SNow’s the time to prepare your home, family, and business.

“A well-prepared home is easier to defend and reduces the risk to surrounding properties.”

Here’s how you can get ready:

Around the Home

Clear gutters and roof debris.

Trim branches and mow lawns.

Remove flammable items from around the house.

Install mesh screens and seal gaps.

Vegetation Management

Reduce foliage near paths.

Trim low branches.

Improve firebreaks.

Access & Safety

Make sure your house number is visible.

Ensure fire trucks can access your property. Prepare evacuation and emergency kits.

Update your Bushfire Survival Plan

Importantly. - don’t forget your pets and know your risk. Check your postcode on the Queensland Fire Department’s website to see your bushfire risk level.

Have a contingency plan. Think ahead: What if you're not home? What if roads are blocked? What if you have guests?

Stay informed.

The nature of the bushfire changes the potential risk to homes and properties in its path. A wellprepared home is easier to defend and reduces the risk to surrounding properties. Even elementary things such as trimming overhanging trees or cleaning out house rainwater gutters make a difference.

Visit Council’s Disaster Hub and the QFD website for resources and updates. There, residents are able to familiarise themselves with and gain an understanding of the bushfire season and how to prepare.

Maleny, Conondale, Landsborough Rural Fire Service volunteers are working hard alongside their partner agencies to make the most of favourable conditions for hazard reduction burning.

It is important to remember here that the men and women at the front line battling bushfires and saving local flora and fauna are volunteers dedicating their time to the community.

Now is the time to prepare your property ahead of bushfire season.

Remember, if you need a Permit to Light Fire, contact your local fire warden.

Bushfire preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together for a safer, stronger Sunshine Coast.

Don’t forget Father’s Day 2025

Don’t forget your father on Sunday September 7th. In Queensland, Australia, Father's Day is always the first Sunday of September.

Father’s Day is a day to say thanks and show appreciation for fathers and father figures who inspire and support a child with guidance and kindness. Many Australian families gather together on Father's Day to make a real family day of celebration.

Just what is the perfect present for a dad or a carer? Perhaps a handmade card, a special drawing, or even just a big hug. It is the thought that counts.

Father’s day started in the early 1900’s in USA, but Australia didn’t really fully embrace it until the 1960’s.

Maleny SES looking for volunteers

Maleny State Emergency Service Group is looking for some volunteers to help get our community through the next disaster season.

You can put your desire to get involved to good use and serve our community. An easy way to do that by becoming a State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer.

Active SES members perform a diverse range of functions to respond to local, state and national disasters and emergencies. By joining the SES you may respond to many different types of activations as a result of disasters and emergencies.

An SES volunteer has an opportunity to participate in and develop a variety of emergency and rescue skills, including chainsaw operations, flood boat operations, road crash rescue and land search.

Not only will you be helping your community, you will make some great mates along the way.

Volunteers are given training to ensure that they have enough skills to be able to handle whatever task you need to do..

“How

Who remembers what occupied the site where the new petrol station now exists between Bunya Street and Lawyer Street, Maleny.

For many years people were used to school busses being driven into this driveway as the home the base for the Heading Family School bus fleet. The properties were demolished to make way for the petrol station that now occupies the site.

School buses in Maleny have played a vital role in connecting students to their educational opportunities, especially for those in the surrounding areas. The history of these services is intertwined with the development of public transport on the Sunshine Coast, according to the Sunshine Coast Council.

A significant milestone was the recent implementation of a subsidised bus service from Mooloolah Valley to Maleny State High School, addressing a long-standing need for accessible transportation. The extended Heading family is still heavily involved with the running of school busses for both the Maleny State and Maleny High Schools
