s it really Christmas time again? As always, none of us truly knows where the year has gone and now 2022 will soon be history. Just like Esch2022? Not at all! For one thing, a warm welcome awaits you in the municipality of the month, Kayl/Tétange, until the end of December. They already celebrated the big musical success “Den neie Mineur” based on the graphic novel about Jean Schortgen, the first worker elected to the national parliament, in September. Currently, the exhibition “The Great Industry” curated by the Lithuanian artist Auksė Petrulienė is running until the middle of this month in the new MUAR – Musée vun der Aarbecht (Museum of Labor) in the Musée Ferrum at the Schungfabrik, a former shoe factory in Kayl/Tétange, which is already an established venue for cultural events of all kinds. These kinds of collaborations with the other European Capitals of Culture – Kaunas in this case – always make me particularly happy! This month, Europe is in the spotlight again, with the cross-border project “Eden Europa” and its closing event “Landscaper X” at L’Arche in Villerupt but also thanks to the exhibition “Pure Europe” at the Möllerei in Belval. What is Europe like today and what will it look like tomorrow? Just like our partners – the Luxembourg and French municipalities, the project partners, the remixers, and everyone else who contributes to the success and continuity of Esch2022 – we are concerned with the future. Because the adventure will continue! And that’s what we’ll be talking about in January. The European Capital of Culture will accompany you into the new year and into a future that we can shape together. Happy Holidays!

oël est déjà de retour ? Une fois encore, l’année a défilé trop vite, et 2022 appartiendra bientôt au passé. Alors faut-il craindre le même sort pour Esch2022 ? Absolument pas ! Un accueil chaleureux vous est réservé à Kayl/Tétange, la commune du mois, jusqu’à fin décembre. Le succès de la comédie musicale « Den neie Mineur », d’après le roman graphique en hommage à Jean Schortgen, premier ouvrier luxembourgeois élu à la Chambre des députés, a été célébré en septembre. L’exposition de l’artiste lituanienne Auksė Petrulienė, intitulée « The Great Industry », est visible jusqu'à mi-décembre au nouveau MUAR – Musée vun der Aarbëscht (musée du Travail). Il se situe au musée Ferrum, nouvel espace du centre culturel Schungfabrik, belle reconversion de l’ancienne manufacture de chaussures de Kayl/Tétange. Ces collaborations avec les autres Capitales européennes de la culture sont toujours pour moi un immense plaisir ! L’Europe est à nouveau – et doublement – sous les projecteurs ce mois-ci avec l’événement de clôture du projet transfrontalier « Eden Europa », intitulé « Landscaper X », à L’Arche de Villerupt et l’exposition « Pure Europe » à la Möllerei à Belval ; regards sur l’Europe d’aujourd’hui et visions de futurs possibles. Un futur qui nous concerne autant que nos partenaires – les municipalités luxembourgeoises et françaises, les partenaires des projets, les remixeurs, et tous ceux qui font exister et feront perdurer Esch2022. Car l’aventure continue ! Vous en saurez plus en janvier. La Capitale européenne de la culture nous – vous – accompagne dans la nouvelle année. Ensemble, dessinons l’avenir dont vous faites partie ! Connue pour sa Schungfabrik, la commune présente une belle dynamique et attire toujours plus les familles.

la petite entreprise de Mathias Hubert devint rapidement une véritable usine employant 25 ouvriers à ses débuts en 1912, contre 70 cinq ans plus tard. Sa spécialité ? Des chaussures de travail pour mineurs dotées de bouts en acier. Suite au déclin de la sidérurgie, la Schungfabrik finit par fermer définitivement ses portes en 1966, avant d’être rachetée par la commune qui, dès 1990, en fait son centre culturel. L’endroit accueille aujourd’hui de nombreux événements et s’est doté d’une annexe hébergeant depuis peu le musée Ferrum. Ce dernier rassemble un musée de l’histoire locale et une galerie dédiée aux œuvres du peintre Emile Kirscht, ayant vécu dans la commune de 1913 à 1994. La cessation de l’extraction minière et le départ de nombreuses industries ont permis à la nature de reprendre ses droits sur les terres environnantes, offrant aujourd’hui à la commune des circuits de randonnée ou de mountain bike portant les traces des activités passées, mais riches d’une faune et d’une flore denses, peuplées notamment d’orchidées et de papillons rares.

omptant aujourd’hui 9 711 habitants, Kayl/Tétange a vu sa population augmenter au cours de ces dernières années. Jeunes couples et familles choisissent en effet de plus en plus de s’installer dans ces deux localités. Réunies depuis 1891, elles sont situées à la frontière française, à proximité d’Esch-sur-Alzette et de Dudelange, deux des grandes villes du sud du Luxembourg. Ce qui attire ces nouveaux habitants ? Une offre séduisante en matière de logements, la proximité de la nature et les nombreux investissements faits en faveur du développement des infrastructures et du bien-être de la population. Après avoir longtemps vécu de l’agriculture, Kayl/Tétange s’est transformée en commune sidérurgique lorsque des gisements de fer ont été découverts dans la vallée de la Kayl – traversée par le ruisseau Kaylbach. De nombreuses personnes sont alors venues s’y installer afin de répondre à la demande de main-d’œuvre des usines environnantes. Surplombant les arbres et visible de loin grâce à son sommet conique surmonté d’une croix, le Monument national des mineurs, érigé en 1978, témoigne de cette époque et rend hommage à tous les mineurs ayant perdu la vie dans le cadre de leur profession. À proximité, impossible de manquer la petite grotte où se niche la « Léiffrächen » (Vierge bien-aimée) représentant Notre-Dame des Mineurs et qui constitue un lieu de pèlerinage depuis 1753. Durant l’ère sidérurgique, Kayl/Tétange a également attiré de nombreux industriels sur ses terres, à l’instar de la fabrique de lampes pour mineurs Pierre Schiltz, de la fonderie Massard toujours en activité aujourd’hui, ou de l’emblématique Schungfabrik. Pouvez-vous nous présenter votre commune ? JEAN WEILER : Avec presque 10 000 habitants de 86 nationalités différentes, Kayl/Tétange est une commune agréable, entourée d’anciennes exploitations minières aujourd’hui réinvesties par la nature.

Could you present your municipality? JEAN WEILER: With almost 10,000 inhabitants of 86 different nationalities, Kayl/Tétange is a pleasant town surrounded by former mining sites that have been reclaimed by nature. What is your vision for the town between now and 2030? We have to prepare for expected demographic changes, which we are able to do thanks to the Housing Pact and our Kayl-Nord project, which will accommodate 3,800 inhabitants. We will also have to adapt our schools and sports facilities and our public transport network to cope with this influx. Obviously, all these new developments are being carried out with a view to reducing the use of fossil fuels, which is why we are focusing on solar energy and sustainable construction. We are also taking care to integrate nature into our new neighbourhoods, with islands of greenery, in order to make these places friendly and pleasant for future residents.

Quelle est votre vision pour la commune d’ici 2030 ? Nous devons préparer l’évolution démographique attendue au sein de notre commune, ce que nous sommes en mesure de faire grâce au Pacte logement et notre projet Kayl-Nord qui pourra accueillir 3 800 habitants. Nous allons également devoir adapter nos infrastructures scolaires, sportives et notre réseau de transports en commun pour faire face à cet afflux. Évidemment, tous ces nouveaux aménagements sont réalisés dans une optique de réduction des énergies fossiles, c’est pourquoi nous misons sur l’énergie solaire et sur les constructions durables. Nous prenons également soin d’intégrer la nature au sein de nos nouveaux quartiers, avec des ilots de verdure, afin que ces endroits soient conviviaux et plaisants pour les futurs habitants.

a modest shoemaker’s shop, Mathias Hubert’s small business quickly became a real factory employing 25 workers when it opened in 1912, and 70 five years later. What did it specialise in? Steel-capped work shoes for miners. With the decline of the steel industry, the Schungfabrik was finally closed in 1966, before being bought by the municipality, which turned it into a cultural centre in 1990. Today the site hosts numerous events and has recently been extended to include the Musée Ferrum. The latter includes a local history museum and a gallery dedicated to the work of painter Emile Kirscht, who lived in the area from 1913 to 1994. The closure of the mines and the departure of several industries has allowed nature to reclaim its rights over the surrounding landscape, creating a number of hiking and mountain biking trails for the town that bear the traces of past activities but that are rich in flora and fauna, including rare orchids and butterflies.

ith its 9,711 inhabitants today, Kayl/Tétange has experienced a significant population growth over the last few years. Young couples and families are increasingly choosing to settle in these two villages, which were joined together in 1891 and are located right on the French border, close to two of southern Luxembourg’s largest towns, Esch-Alzette and Dudelange. But what is it that attracts these new residents? The housing on offer, the proximity to nature and the numerous investments that have been made in terms of infrastructure and the well-being of the locals. After living from the land for a long time Kayl/Tétange became a steel-making community when iron deposits were discovered in the Kayl valley, through which the Kaylbaach flows. Many people moved here to meet the demand for labour in the surrounding factories that cropped up. Overlooking the trees and visible from afar thanks to its conical apex topped by a cross, the Monument national des mineurs (National Miners’ Monument), built in 1978, bears witness to this period in history and pays tribute to all the miners who lost their lives in the course of carrying out this work. You can’t miss the small cave close by where the “Léiffrächen” (Beloved Virgin) representing Our Lady of the Miners can be found. It has been a place of pilgrimage since 1753. During the iron and steel era, Kayl/Tétange also attracted entrepreneurs and industrialists, such as Pierre Schiltz and his mining lamp factory, the Massard foundry, which is still in operation today, or the emblematic Schungfabrik. Esch2022, un succès pour la région Sud Esch2022, a success story for the southern region

Depuis plus d’un an, les équipes de Esch2022 travaillent pour faire de cette Capitale européenne de la culture un succès. De nombreuses avancées ont été réalisées dans chaque volet de ce projet sociétal pour initier les actions de demain. Nancy Braun, Directeur Général d’Esch2022, nous l’explique. For over a year the Esch2022 teams have been working to make the European Capital of Culture a success. During the various phases of this societal project, they have made a lot of progress in order to initiate the actions of tomorrow, says Nancy Braun, CEO of Esch2022. 10

NANCY BRAUN : L'offre culturelle représente 80 % du programme établi dans le cadre de Esch2022 et affiche un fort potentiel de développement. Le titre a permis à de nouveaux espaces culturels de voir le jour à Esch-sur-Alzette grâce aux investissements de nos partenaires et des communes de la région. Ces dernières ont conçu pour cette année des programmes composés de différentes initiatives amenées à perdurer. Citons par exemple la fête des Brandons à Käerjeng ou le projet « De Ris geet op d’Rees » qui a permis à Bettembourg de se connecter avec ses villes jumelles et Kaunas. Nous avons également souhaité donner les premières impulsions à une participation citoyenne pour encourager le public à se tourner vers la culture.

En matière de tourisme, quelles sont les avancées notables ?

Nous avons essayé de placer la région Sud sur la carte. Nous avons pu nous connecter aux acteurs régionaux et nationaux que sont l’Office Régional du Tourisme et le Luxembourg for Tourism. Notre désirions nous inscrire dans la stratégie nationale et régionale. Nous avons donc travaillé ensemble sur plusieurs projets. De nouveaux produits touristiques ont été développés : le Minett Trail imaginé depuis quelques années, le Minett Cycle ainsi que le Time Travel Belval qui présente le passé d’un site grâce aux nouvelles technologies.

Le développement durable est également un thème cher à Esch2022. Qu’avez-vous mis en place pour favoriser ce dernier ?

Dans ce domaine, nous avons développé la charte ELO.lu avec le ministère de l’Environnement,

du Climat et du Développement durable. Une initiative que nous aimerions voir se développer au niveau national, voire européen. En effet, cette charte intéresse d’autres ECOC qui souhaitent s’en inspirer. L’accessibilité fait partie de cette charte. Pour la garantir, nous avons établi un partenariat avec Cultur’All, que nous voulons renforcer à l’avenir. Dans chacune des directions prises, nous avons toujours fait en sorte de collaborer avec un partenaire déjà en place au niveau local, régional ou national pour développer ensemble des projets qui soient pérennes.

Dans le cadre de cette ECOC, vous avez multiplié les collaborations. Quels sont leurs bénéfices ?

Nous avons mené pour Esch2022 une réflexion sur la création d’une plateforme rapprochant les porteurs de projets à la recherche de sponsoring ou de soutien financier et le secteur économique désirant encourager le développement culturel. L’outil Business for Culture Club (BFCC) pourra être très utile pour donner un visage à cette collaboration. La dimension européenne est aussi importante puisque 30 % de nos projets sont en lien avec les capitales partenaires : Kaunas 2022 et Novi Sad 2022. Cela fait partie de notre ADN. De futures capitales européennes de la culture nous approchent pour travailler ensemble. Nous les connectons à notre réseau de partenaires présents sur le terrain et qui pourront les aider. Enfin, la coopération transfrontalière a permis de renforcer le développement de projets culturels entre acteurs luxembourgeois et français, et de désigner un coordinateur culturel chez nos voisins. L’Arche à Villerupt a par exemple été inaugurée cette année et deviendra un important partenaire pour notre pays. La question de la mobilité et du développement touristique représente également un grand défi pour notre collaboration.

English What cultural developments have been achieved by the ECOC (European Capital of Culture)?

NANCY BRAUN: The cultural agenda makes up 80% of the Esch2022 programme and has great potential for development. This title has allowed us to create new cultural spaces in Esch-Alzette thanks to the investments of our partners and the region’s municipalities. This year, the latter designed programmes featuring initiatives that will continue to exist beyond the end of the year. For example, the Brandon Festival in Käerjeng or the “De Ris geet op d’Rees” project, which allowed Bettembourg to link up with its twin cities and Kaunas. We also wanted to create the first impulses towards citizen participation in order to encourage the public to turn to culture.

Il s’agit en effet d’un tremplin pour différents sujets qui existaient mais nécessitaient une impulsion. Ce titre est généralement perçu comme un accélérateur. Dans notre cas, il a permis la mise en place d’actions que nous n’aurions jamais imaginées aussi rapides, comme la rénovation du bâtiment que nous occupons : la Möllerei. C’est une satisfaction pour nous d’avoir pu mettre en place ces différents axes en équipe et avec nos partenaires. Nous sommes fiers d’avoir pu contribuer au développement de ce projet sociétal qui, nous l’espérons, aura un impact. Personnellement, je suis curieuse de voir la suite.

In the field of tourism, what have been the most important developments?

Le 22 décembre, vous célébrerez une remise de flambeau. Plus qu’une clôture, il s’agit d’un renouveau. Dans quel état d’esprit abordez-vous cet événement ?

Sustainable development is also a theme dear to Esch2022. What have you put in place to foster that?

Le 22 décembre, notre structure exécutive remettra le flambeau à tous nos partenaires, qu'il s'agisse des partenaires de projet, des communes, des sponsors, tous ceux qui ont participé au projet. Ensemble, nous avons posé les jalons pour que tous ces partenaires continuent à travailler sur le projet et que l'impact souhaité puisse être atteint. L’équipe de Esch2022 a joué le rôle de locomotive, tirant le projet pour le faire avancer. Avec les idées et compétences de notre équipe nous avons pu enrichir les différentes facettes du projet ECOC. Le moment est venu pour nous de passer la main. Cependant, un tel projet ne repose pas sur une année uniquement. C’est une aventure à mener collectivement pour créer un impact à long terme. Nous avons vu en 1995 et 2007 ce que ce titre de Capitale européenne de la culture pouvait apporter. Il s’agit d’un outil important au niveau européen pour fédérer la culture et les intérêts communs. Dans un contexte marqué par les crises et la guerre, nous réalisons à quel point la culture nous lie. Ce rapprochement des populations au niveau local, régional, national mais aussi entre pays permet de conserver une certaine cohésion.

We tried to put the southern region on the map. We were able to connect with regional and national players such as the Office Régional du Tourisme (Regional Tourism Office) and Luxembourg for Tourism. We wanted to be part of the wider national and regional strategy. We worked together on several projects and new tourist products have been developed such as the Minett Trail, which was conceived a few years ago, the Minett Cycle and Time Travel Belval, which presents the history of a site through new technologies.

In this area we have developed the ELO.lu charter with the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development. This is an initiative that we would like to develop at national and even European level. Indeed this charter is of interest to other ECOCs who wish to draw inspiration from it. Accessibility is part of the charter. To guarantee accessibility we established a partnership with Cultur’All, which we want to strengthen further in the future. At every turn, we have worked with an existing partner at local, regional or national level to develop lasting projects together.

You increased the number of collaborations within the framework of this ECOC. What have the benefits been?

For Esch2022 we explored the creation of a platform to bring together project leaders looking for sponsorship or financial support and the economic sector hoping to foster cultural development. The Business for Culture Club (BFCC) tool could be very useful to give a face to this collaboration. The European dimension is also important since 30% of our projects are linked to our partner capitals: Kaunas 2022 and Novi Sad 2022. This is part of our DNA. Future European Capitals of Culture have

approached us to work together and we have connected them to our network of partners on the ground who can help them. Finally, cross-border cooperation has made it possible to strengthen the development of cultural projects between Luxembourg and French stakeholders and to appoint a cultural coordinator in our neighbouring country. L'Arche in Villerupt, for example, was inaugurated this year and will become an important partner. The question of mobility and tourism development is also a major challenge for us to work on together.

Is the European Capital of Culture title a springboard for these different areas?

It is indeed a springboard for various topics and themes that already existed but needed a boost. The title is generally perceived as an accelerator. In our case it has allowed us to implement things that we would never have imagined could happen so quickly, such as the renovation of the building we occupy, the Möllerei. It’s gratifying for us to have been able to develop these different areas of focus as a team and with our partners. We are proud to have been able to contribute to the implementation of this societal project, which we hope will have an impact. Personally, I am curious to see what happens next.

Nevertheless, such a project cannot be based on one year alone. It is an adventure that must be led collectively in order to create a long-term impact. In 1995 and 2007, we saw what the European Capital of Culture title can offer. It is an important tool at the European level to raise awareness of culture and foster common interests. Against the backdrop of crises and war, we realise just how much culture binds us. Bringing people together at local, regional, national level, but also between countries, allows us to maintain a certain cohesion. If every stakeholder (be that project leaders, partners or politicians) recognises the importance of what we have developed together in recent months, this ECOC will have a major impact for years to come.

Avantpremière « Gant de Pied »

En 1955, deux cinéastes amateurs membres de l’ACE (Amateurs Cinéastes Esch), Levy et Laux, réalisent un film en 8 mm sur le fonctionnement de la fabrique de chaussures Hubert Frères à Tétange. En 2017, Mady Laux, la fille de l’un des deux réalisateurs, confie le long-métrage au Centre national de l’audiovisuel. L’œuvre est alors numérisée et il est demandé au compositeur Pol Belardi de concevoir une création sonore qui accompagnera la première projection du film. C’est donc dans le cadre de Esch2022 que le public pourra enfin découvrir le film des deux cinéastes lors d’un live cinema. Le compositeur sera présent pour interpréter en direct la bande sonore réalisée pour l’occasion. In 1955, Levy and Laux, two amateur filmmakers and mem bers of ACE (Amateurs Cinéastes Esch), made an 8mm film about the Hubert Frères shoe factory in Tétange. In 2017, Mady Laux, the daughter of one of the two directors, entrusted the feature film to the Centre National de l’Audiovisuel. The work was then digitised, and composer Pol Belardi was asked to create a soundtrack to accompany the film’s first screening. Now, as part of Esch2022, the public can finally view the two film makers’ work during a live cinema event at which the composer will perform the soundtrack he created for the occasion. Christian Mosar, director of the Bridderhaus and the Konschthal, will give a lecture entitled “Just fir iwwert de Canapé” on the art of Helen Buchholtz’s time. Works from the City of Esch-Alzette’s collection will be presented as part of the event. Antoinette Lorang will also give her talk “Biergerlech Wunnkultur zu Esch”, in which she discusses how culture influenced the development of the town’s bourgeois housing from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1930s. The lecture will cover how the steel industry and the economic upturn drove the creation of new residential areas.

Le baryton Tomás Král se produira devant le public avec le pianiste Matan Porat et interprètera des œuvres de ces artistes lors d’un concert. Les spectateurs pourront découvrir des chansons très appréciées de la compositrice Vítezslava Kaprálová, elle-même élève du compositeur Bohuslav Martinu. Issu de la collaboration entre le Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), le Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, le Rocklab (Rockhal) & l’Université du Luxembourg, le projet THE SOUND OF DATA utilise des données scientifiques (données sur le trafic, historiques ou de scanner corporel 3D) pour générer des sons grâce au principe de « visualisation ». Ces derniers sont ensuite utilisés par des musiciens pour composer des morceaux et les interpréter sur scène. Le DJ et artiste interdisciplinaire Max Cooper ainsi que le musicien électronique Valery Vermeulen se produiront tous deux sur la scène de la Rockhal pour présenter au public le résultat de ce travail. Une parfaite occasion de créer des ponts entre le monde de la recherche et celui de la musique pour une rencontre unique et surprenante. THE SOUND OF DATA project is a collaboration between The Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), the Rocklab (Rockhal) & the University of Luxembourg. It uses scientific data (from traffic data, historical data as well as 3D body scan data) to generate sounds through the principle of “visual isation”. Musicians then use these to compose songs and perform them on stage. DJ and inter disciplinary artist Max Cooper and electronic musician Valery Vermeulen will take to the Rockhal stage to present the project’s results to the public. It’s a perfect opportunity to build bridges between the worlds of research and music and witness a unique and amazing encounter.

« Nous voulions mettre en relation un grand récit dominant et des contre-récits. » “ We wanted to compare the dominant narrative with the counter-narratives.” It is more a matter of raising questions so that the public can form their own opinions. Europe is not just a territory, the idea is a more blurred than that. There is the European Union for example, but also other Europes...who makes up those? Many are asking themselves this question today... The exhibition revolves around six clichés about Europe: white, cultured, rich, Christian, old, patriotic. Why? Because these are all ideas that need to be qualified for a public that may or may not agree with them. For example, Europe has certainly had a relationship with Christianity since the Middle Ages, but in reality there is a great diversity of religions, and it is also the most atheist continent in the world.

L’exposition s’articule autour de six clichés à propos de l’Europe : blanche, cultivée, riche, chrétienne,

vieille, nationale. Pourquoi ce choix ? Car ce sont autant d’idées à nuancer, à destination d’un public qui peut y adhérer ou pas. Par exemple, l’Europe a certes une relation avec la chrétienté depuis le MoyenÂge, mais en réalité il y existe une grande diversité de religions, et c’est aussi le continent le plus athée du monde. Pouvez-vous nous parler du contenu et de la scénographie de « Pure Europe » ? L’exposition contiendra des textes, des photos, des vidéos, des objets, des installations. Elle est

Le projet de résidence artistique et pédagogique « On pourrait faire le tour du Monde » invite des photographes, auteurs, une écrivaine et une géographe à investir la zone transfrontalière comprise entre la France et le Luxembourg. Dans ce contexte, une exposition documentaire trace des lignes entre le passé et le présent de la région industrielle. The artistic and educational residency project “On pourrait faire le tour du Monde” invites photographers, authors, writers and geographers to capture the essence of the industrial frontier regions between France and Luxembourg to create a documentary exhibition that traces links between the area’s past and present. Samuel Bollendorff et Mehdi Ahoudig se sont intéressés aux dizaines de milliers d’ouvriers, cadres et petites mains affluant vers le Luxembourg depuis la France pour y travailler. Tous deux sont partis à leur rencontre, ont enregistré leurs témoignages et les ont photographiés. Ils invitent le public à écouter ces récits et à s’immerger dans des paysages photographiques et sonores au travers d’une exposition. Un voyage interactif à effectuer jusqu’au 5 février à la Massenoire.

Interested by the lives of the tens of thousands of executives, tradespeople and blue-collar workers who flock to Luxembourg from France to earn their living, Samuel Bollendorff and Mehdi Ahoudig went out to meet them, recorded their testimonies and photographed them. The public is now invited to this exhibition to listen to these stories and immerse themselves in the images and sounds of the workers’ world. You can take this interactive journey until 5 February at the Massenoire.

Spieglein Spieglein miroir miroir Une exposition sur les autoportraits et les selfies. An exposition about self-portraits and selfies.

The project “Spieglein Spieglein - miroir miroir” is an itinerant, interactive exhibition that invites individuals to photograph themselves as they interact with photographic-mirror installations housed in booths and telephone boxes. Participants are then encouraged to share their photos via their networks. The snaps will also be collected by independent artist Jessica Theis and will be available for viewing in an exhibition opening on 8 December. The exhibition will focus on the art of self-portraits – or selfies – which have become so popular on social media but which were also embraced by history’s great painters and photographers, from Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Andy Warhol.

Le projet « Spieglein Spieglein – miroir miroir » consiste en une exposition itinérante et interactive. Cette installation photographique-miroir prend forme dans des boxes et cabines téléphoniques et invite le spectateur à se photographier en dialogue avec l’installation. Il lui est ensuite proposé de partager ce cliché sur les réseaux. Les photographies rassemblées par l’artiste indépendante Jessica Theis sont à découvrir dans le cadre d’une exposition dont le vernissage se déroulera ce 8 décembre. Cette exposition s’intéressera à l’autoportrait, le selfie, qui suscitait déjà l’intérêt de grands peintres et photographes, de Rembrandt à Van Gogh en passant par Warhol, et devenu très populaire sur les médias sociaux.

Stëmme vun der Schmelz

À l’occasion du 10e anniversaire de l’ancien site industriel Waassertuerm + Pomhouse et dans le cadre du projet « our archive. your story. », le CNA organise l’exposition « Stëmme vun der Schmelz ». Pour ce faire, le Centre national de l’audiovisuel s’est associé à l’artiste Michel Feinen et à la scénographe Anouk Schiltz. Ensemble, ils ont rassemblé des témoignages, objets et documents et ont également rendu hommage aux anciens travailleurs en installant des traces audiovisuelles durables sur le site. Le public est invité à découvrir cette immersion multimédia dans le passé de ce lieu symbolique jusqu’au 1er janvier 2023. Pour clôturer l’exposition, une visite guidée sera réalisée avec l’un des 19 témoins ayant travaillé sur ce site. « Ensemble même si différents », c’est plus de 90 événements organisés en 2022 à Esch-surAlzette, donnant la parole à des personnalités de nationalités, d’origines et de convictions différentes : concerts, conférences, expositions et moments conviviaux, en majorité gratuits, permettent ainsi de déployer des idées et des concepts uniques. « Promouvoir avant tout les valeurs humanistes qui nous rassemblent est notre objectif premier, explique Paul Nilles, coordinateur du projet. Nous avons aussi à cœur de provoquer des rencontres et de mettre en lumière les acteurs locaux, associations et artistes. » En décembre, le thème de la solidarité est à l’honneur. Le week-end des 10 et 11 décembre

se tiendra Solidamix, une exposition par 18 associations humanitaires, un cycle de conférences à la synagogue et un week-end entre exposition, conférences, visites et repas au Centre islamique Gazi Isa-Beg. Trois concerts se tiendront à l’église Sacré-Cœur, avec des chants de Noël et le groupe de musique africaine Filiband. Une exposition de 27 crèches représentant chaque pays européen, ou une conférence d’Alex Langini sur les architectures des églises luxembourgeoises sont également prévues. L’un des moments forts de décembre sera la conférence invitant Jean-Claude Juncker, le cardinal Hollerich et l’anthropologue Gilles Reckinger sur le thème « L’Europe en 2022 : désastre, défi ou espoir ? ».

Giving voice to personalities of different nationalities, origins and convictions through a series of (mostly) free-of-charge concerts, conferences, exhibitions and enjoyable moments, it has allowed unique ideas and concepts to be developed. “Our main objective has been to promote the humanistic values that unite us,” explains Paul Nilles, project coordinator. “We are also committed to encouraging meetings between people and highlighting local contributors, organisations and artists.” December champions the theme of solidarity. On the weekend of the 10th and 11th, the Solidamix exhibition, which has been organised by 18 humanitarian associations, will take place. It will feature a series of talks at the synagogue, alongside a weekend of exhibits, conferences, tours and meals at the Centre Islamique Gazi Isa-Beg. Three concerts will be held at the Sacré-Cœur church, including Christmas carols and one with the African music group Filiband. An exhibition featuring 27 mangers, each representing a European country, and a lecture by Alex Langini on the architecture of Luxembourg churches are also planned. E roude Fuedem duerch de roude Buedem Le projet « E roude Fuedem duerch de roude Buedem » s’intéresse de près aux légendes locales de la région du Minett. Remixées par Maskénada, un collectif d’artistes pluridisciplinaires, ces histoires ont été transportées dans six communes à travers des randonnées artistiques performatives. Parmi ces parcours sonores deux sont disponibles en balade sonore. « De sëlwer-roude Rack » emmène le public au Ellergronn pour découvrir comment vivaient les femmes de chevaliers au début du Moyen Âge. « Malleus Maleficarum 2.2 » invite les participants sur la colline du Haard pour découvrir la puissance des femmes d’aujourd’hui et d’autrefois : politiciennes, entrepreneuses, ouvrières, et tant d’autres. Ces deux itinéraires se veulent interactifs et nécessitent l’utilisation de l’application GOH.

Découvrir la région Sud grâce à la réalité augmentée, c’est le principe de ce projet organisé en collaboration avec la Naturschoul Lasauvage. 14 circuits sont proposés au public pour parcourir pas moins de 13 localités luxembourgeoises et françaises que sont Aumetz, Bettembourg, Differdange, Dudelange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Kayl, Käerjeng, Lasauvage, Mondercange, Pétange, Rumelange, Sanem, Schifflange et Villerupt. Pour explorer la région Esch2022, les visiteurs disposent donc d’un compagnon de voyage numérique sous la forme d’une application de

réalité augmentée : « discovARminett ». Ils pourront ainsi s’immerger dans l’histoire des différentes communes et explorer plus de cent lieux touristiques, culturels et historiques incontournables. The project “E roude Fuedem duerch de roude Buedem” examines local tales from the Minett region. The legends have been transformed by Maskénada, a collective of multidisciplinary artists into performance walks within six municipalities. Two of which have been reworked into audio tours. The first, ‘De sëlwerroude Rack’ invites the public to the Ellergronn to discover how the wives of knights’ lived in the early Middle Ages. The second, ‘Malleus Maleficarum 2.2’, welcomes participants to the Haard hill to discover the power of women – politicians, entrepreneurs, work ers, and many more – today and in the past. Both are interactive, appbased (GOH) trails.

This immersive psychogeographical sound walk, created by Catherine Kontz and Sarah Grange in collaboration with the CNA and the local water administration, invites participants to explore the city centre of EschAlzette and its hidden river. Thanks to a map created by local artist Ben Carter, the public can actively engage in the rediscovery of forgotten and hidden aspects of the city and its surroundings. Following the watercourse, participants can enjoy a 360° sound experience that includes music, poetry, interviews and archive material, transforming the environments along the route into a living theatrical backdrop. They will also have the opportunity to take part in small performances that bring the landscape and history to life. Walking, listening and recomposing the everyday sounds of Esch Ce projet, mené par l’urbaniste sonore Trond Maag et l’architecte sonore Andres Bosshard, invite les promeneurs à parcourir trois itinéraires pour découvrir l’art de la marche sonore ainsi que les environnements acoustiques de la ville. Le parcours « Fading thunders of Belval » plonge les visiteurs dans le quartier de Belval et ses structures d’acier aux immenses dimensions. « City stories » initie le public aux stratégies visant à rendre les villes plus vertes et les invite à s’intéresser à l’héritage acoustique de la cité-jardin. Enfin, « Memories of the blue noise » attire l’attention sur les bruits et sons occultés de l’Alzette qui s’écoule sous la ville. Waterlight Graffiti Écrire des messages éphémères faits de lumière. Writing ephemeral messages with light. Conçu par l’artiste Antonin Fourneau, « Waterlight Graffiti » consiste en un mur composé d’une multitude de LED qui s’illuminent au contact de l’eau. Plus l’installation est humide, plus elle brille. Le public est dans ce contexte invité à venir faire un tour au SKIP où l’œuvre interactive est installée. Les plus curieux pourront tenter l’expérience de peindre avec la lumière en laissant libre cours à leur imagination et ainsi s’essayer au graffiti mais aussi au dessin de manière éphémère lors d’un workshop. En effet, les messages composés de lumière s’effaceront à mesure que l’eau s’évapore. Pour un tel résultat, une panoplie d’outils et de pinceaux seront mis à disposition des petits mais aussi des plus grands. multitude of LEDs that light up on contact with water. The wetter the installation, the brighter it glows. The public is invited to visit SKIP, where the interactive work is installed. Workshop – Let’s paint Début décembre, l’artiste Lisa Junius propose aux enfants, à l’occasion d’ateliers collaboratifs, de découvrir les techniques de peinture sur grands formats. L’artiste guidera les participants tout au long du processus de création et de composition d’une toile de 10 m de longueur afin de mimer l’esprit des peintures murales caractéristiques du street art. Pour les adultes, l’artiste, accompagnée de la danseuse Sayoko Onishi et du musicien contrebassiste Emmanuel Fleitz, joindront leur forces lors d’une soirée afterwork pour proposer au public du SKIP une performance sur le panneau « Waterlight Graffiti » de l’artiste français Antonin Fourneau. Une soirée qui s’annonce féerique en cette période hivernale et de préparation des fêtes. The Kayl/Tétange commune has strong historical links to the steel industry and its labour force. In the “Remix” spirit of Esch2022 European Capital of Culture, a threepart project to revitalise this heritage and make it relevant to modern audiences has been born. First, Binsfeld published a graphic novel by Charles Meder et Marc Angel on the life of Jean Schortgen, the first workers› deputy in Luxembourg’s parliament. Next came a musical featuring a troupe of amateur actors supervised by professionals. At the end of September, this group of thespians succeeded in gathering a 1,100-strong audience at Schungfabrik and creating a tableau on stage featuring 160 actors and musicians. The scene represented 150 years of social and political struggle. The third part of the project – a play entitled ‘Den Neie Mineur’ – will be performed in December. La commune de Kayl/ Tétange possède un patrimoine lié au monde du travail et de la sidérurgie. Héichkultur amplaz Héichuewen

Since 2010, Richtung22 has been producing satirical films and plays that encourage audiences to reflect on the nature of contemporary life in Luxembourg. Their pieces address the nation’s historical and economic context and attempt to decipher the identity of the modern country and its inhabitants. With the project “Héichkultur amplaz Héichuewen”, the group looks at the 50 years of structural changes in the steel industry and the story of southern Luxembourg’s reinvention. The latter is presented as a shortterm and dramatic upheaval. Following “Esch ass Dout!” at Socle C and “Barbara contre Esch City Plus” at Plancher des Coulées, Richtung22 will perform a third play, “Frontaliers”, that retraces this structural transformation and the local resistance it inspired. 19, 20, 21 & 22.12.2022 CENTRE SOCIOCULTUREL A. Empire of a Faun Imaginary Plongée dans l’inconnu. Dive into the unknown. Ce spectacle sans paroles emmène le public en terrain inconnu où l’humain et le non humain dialoguent et où les frontières entre les mondes implosent. Quatre artistes se livrent ici à une chorégraphie. Entre frottements et métamorphoses, l’alchimie des corps, des sons et des objets compose un cosmos à la fois beau et étrange proche de la magie. De la force tranquille d’un mammouth à la viscosité d’une flore subaquatique, Simone Mousset a imaginé « Empire of a Faun Imaginary » suite à la pandémie, en s’inspirant de l’actualité internationale désastreuse. Cet univers hybride invite chacun à faire preuve d’imagination pour se plonger dans cet inconnu. Choreographed by four artists, this wordless performance takes its audience into an unknown land where humans and non-humans interact, and the boundaries between their worlds implode. Filled with friction and metamorphosis, the show

is haunted by an alchemy of bodies, sounds and objects, creating a nearmagical cosmos that is both beautiful and strange. Put together in the wake of the pandemic and informed by the disasters reported in world news, Simone Mousset’s “Empire of a Faun Imaginary” features a hybrid universe that showcases everything from the quiet strength of a mammoth to the viscosity of underwater flora. Produisant des films et pièces satiriques depuis 2010, le collectif Richtung22 a pour objectif de permettre une réflexion sur le Luxembourg contemporain, d’aborder les contextes historiques et économiques et de décrypter l’identité du pays et ses habitants. Avec le projet « Héichkultur amplaz Héichuewen », Richtung22 s’intéresse aux 50 ans de changements structurels qu’a connus la sidérurgie et à l’histoire de la réinvention du sud du Luxembourg. Ces derniers sont mis en scène comme un bouleversement à court terme et dramatique. Après « Esch ass Dout ! » au Socle C et « Barbara contre Esch City Plus » au Plancher des Coulées, Richtung22 propose une troisième pièce pour retracer cette transformation structurelle et la résistance locale : « Frontaliers ».

« L’heure bleue », musée installé en pleine nature, est dédié à une œuvre d’art inspirée du phénomène éponyme. Cette plateforme est accessible jusqu’au 22 décembre pour observer chaque jour cette singularité. Une publication à ce sujet verra le jour en 2023.

Pour marquer la clôture du projet « EDEN EUROPA » et se tourner vers l’avenir, Sayoko Onishi et Emmanuel Fleitz de Man’ok & Cie ont décidé d’inviter l’artiste visuel Michaël England à se produire avec eux à L’Arche. Tous trois revisiteront la création chorégraphique et musicale de Man’ok & Cie « Landscaper, ici même à ciel ouvert » dédiée aux jardins et espaces naturels et jouée dans divers endroits de la région. Ensemble, ils créeront ainsi « Landscaper X », une performance dansée, sonore et augmentée. L’objectif du projet « EDEN EUROPA » mis en place par Man’ok & Cie est de tisser des liens entre les habitants de chaque côté de la frontière à travers des pratiques artistiques et la construction scénographique urbaine.

Publication du livre « Le Journal de Reddy » Ce projet porté par l’auteur Alain Giorgetti, en collaboration avec Esch2022, a permis aux élèves des classes de CM1-CM2 de l’école primaire Jules Ferry de Russange de créer un album jeunesse sur l’héritage de la région du fer. Cette création fait suite à une série d’ateliers et de visites. Book Launch “H – The Notion of Humanist Photography” Le CNA et la Kaunas Photography Gallery ont décidé de travailler ensemble dans le cadre de Esch2022. Pour créer un nouveau format de collaboration, ils ont cherché à combiner deux projets existants, partageant le même objectif de rassembler les créateurs du monde de la photographie : les « Portfolio Days » (organisés tous les trois ans par le CNA) et le Magazine de Kaunas « Į » (publié chaque année). Le résultat, basé sur une commande photographique, traite d’humanisme et prend la forme d’un livre qui sera présenté dans les deux pays.

Working within the framework of Esch2022, the CNA and the Kaunas Photography Gallery have come together to create a new collaborative format. The new venture combines two existing projects that share the same goal of bringing together creators from the world of photography: ‘Portfolio Days’ (organised every three years by the CNA) and ‘Į’ Kaunas’ magazine (published every year). Based on a photographic commission, the result deals with a designated subject and takes the form of a book that will be presented in both countries.

To mark the end of the “EDEN EUROPA” project and with a nod to the future, Sayoko Onishi and Emmanuel Fleitz of Man’ok & Cie have invited visual artist Michaël England to perform with them at L’Arche. Together, the trio will revisit Man’ok & Cie’s music and dance creation “Landscaper, ici même à ciel ouvert” to create a new augmented piece of choreography with sound, “Landscaper X”. The original “Landscaper ici même à ciel ouvert” was dedicated to gardens and natural spaces and performed in various regional locations. The aim of the EDEN EUROPA project, set up by Man’ok & Cie, is to forge links between the inhabitants living on opposite sides of the border through art and urban scenographic construction.

“L’heure bleue” is a museum set in the middle of the countryside dedicated to an artwork inspired by the phenomenon of the same name. It is open every day until 22 December to allow people to observe the blue hour of twilight for themselves. A publication on the subject will be published in 2023.

Russange COMMUNE

Un village tourné vers ses voisins, sa population et son histoire. A village turned towards its neighbours, its people and its history.

Dans le cadre d’Esch2022 Capitale européenne de la culture, les élèves de la classe de CM1-CM2 de l’école Jules Ferry ont réalisé un album jeunesse sur l’héritage de la région du fer. « Le Journal de Reddy » est le fruit d’ateliers menés par l’auteur Alain Giorgetti et l’illustrateur Vincent Bailly, et est notamment inspiré de visites sur le territoire environnant. « L’aspect le plus intéressant et le plus plaisant d’Esch2022 Capitale européenne de la culture fut à mon sens l’association de toutes ces communes françaises et luxembourgeoises, note le maire JeanJacques Bourson. Cela nous a permis de nous

rencontrer et de faire sortir les gens de leur isolement. » La rue principale de cette commune de 1 200 habitants est toujours bordée de maisons accompagnées de granges, symboles d’une « petite commune agricole mosellane typique », selon le maire. Un village en plein développement : avec son lotissement en construction, Russange atteindra les 2 000 habitants dans la décennie à venir. Un nouvel ensemble scolaire est déjà en projet ; le premier élu évoque aussi la nécessité d’une résidence pour personnes âgées dans un futur proche. « Nous allons continuer à aménager

« Esch2022 Capitale européenne de la culture nous a permis de nous rencontrer et de faire sortir les gens de leur isolement. »

« Patchwork », pièce interprétée par des danseurs hip-hop du Luxembourg, raconte la rencontre au Grand-Duché d’individus venant d’horizons différents. Elle invite également le public à se questionner sur la définition d’identité. En effet, comment se forme, se déforme ou se transformet-elle au fil des expériences et des hasards de la vie ? Cette manifestation, alliant notamment breakdance, house et popping, s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet « Identity » porté par l’ASBL KnowEdge. Un musicien et quatre danseurs explorent sur scène la question de l’identité de l’individu et font par la même occasion découvrir l’univers des danses urbaines et les valeurs gravitant autour de cette culture. Chaque représentation sera suivie d’une rencontre débat.

« La rencontre au Grand-Duché d’individus venant d’horizons différents. » “ Individuals from different backgrounds meeting in the Grand Duchy.”

As part of Esch2022 European Capital of Culture, pupils in the CM1-CM2 class at the Jules Ferry School have produced a children’s album on the heritage of the so-called iron region. Le Journal de Reddy (Reddy’s Diary) is the result of workshops led by author Alain Giorgetti and illustrator Vincent Bailly and was inspired by visits to the surrounding area.

“Patchwork”, a dance piece performed by hip-hop dancers from Luxembourg, tells the story of individuals from different backgrounds meeting in the Grand Duchy. The show invites audience members to question how we define identity and how that definition is formed, deformed and transformed through a lifetime of experiences. Combining breakdance, house and popping, the work forms part of ASBL KnowEdge’s identity project. As well as exploring notions of individual identity, the performers – one musician and four dancers – introduce the world of street dance and its cultural values. A discussion will follow each performance.

“The most interesting and pleasant aspect of Esch2022 European Capital of Culture has been, in my opinion, the way all these French and Luxembourg municipalities have worked together,” notes the town’s mayor Jean-Jacques Bourson. “This has allowed us to meet and bring people out of their isolation.” The main street of this 1,200-strong community is still lined with houses with attached barns, symbols of a “typical small agricultural community in the Moselle region,” according to the mayor. The village is under development mode with a new housing estate being built that will see Russange reach the 2,000 inhabitants mark in the next decade. A new school complex is already planned and the town’s most senior representative also recognises the need for an old people›s home in the near future. “We will continue to develop Russange for the whole population,” he says. “We are fortunate in that we have managed to retain a village identity while being close to many services and shops, particularly on the other side of the border.”
