hosting Circus or the poetics of risk, an exhibition which sets out to “review and reinterpret the companies, artistes, festivals and shows that turned the para-theatrical scene in Catalan-speaking regions on its head in the 1970s”. René also recommends two small and very clever art spots, the Iguapop (C/ Comerç, 15. www.iguapop.net +34 93 31 00 735 mon 5 pm – 9 pm tue - sat 11 am – 2.30 pm and 5 pm – 9 pm. free) and Maxalot (C.de la Palma de Sant Just, 9. info@maxalot.com www.maxalot.com) galleries. Both galleries are rich and vibrant centres for the latest in graphic design, street and contemporary art, and illustration. Iguapop is currently showing the weird and wonderful animation of Víctor Castillo through until December 2005. From 09 December 2005 until 14 February 2006, Maxalot will be highlighting the work of Joshua Davis and his Artmaking Machine, a show that demands that participants become part of the creative process themselves by adding to a randomly generated growing art work that will be printed at the end of the exhibition. Barcelona is not just a feast for the eyes, but is well known for its rich and varied Catalonian cuisine. René

rates two current favourites. One is Paco Meralgo (c/Muntaner, 171, xamfrà Còrsega. + 34 93 43 09 027. 1 pm – 4 pm. 8.30 pm – 1.00 am), which serves high-end Catalan tapas. “Don't miss the tuna carpaccio,” our transplanted Suede insists. Then “skip desserts and head down to Dolco, an all dessert restaurant that will leave you smiling with joy”. Quite a recommendation! Tourists often wonder how the Catalans survive a life of late dinners and even later clubbing and yet still make it to the office the next day. Barcelona by night has so much to offer it is almost impossible to say no to going out and even more difficult to make a choice. Dry Martini (www.drymartinibcn.com Aribau 162-166 6:30 pm-2.30 am closed sun) is a classic, as well as classy, Barcelona nightspot that René says, “qualifies as one of my top favourite cocktail bars worldwide. If that is too calm for you, try nearby Toscano Antico (Calle Aribau,167. 7.30 pm – 10.20) for the best cocktails in town, funky music and great energy”. Of course a great pastime when visiting any great city is to do some shopping. The passion and flair that the Barcelona inhabitants have for living shines through in

their vibrant and extroverted style and there are great stores for fashion and more. “For clothing, men or women, Jean Pierre Bua (avinguda diagonal 469. +34 93 43 97 100. www.jeanpierrebua.com) always has an impeccable selection. For music go to Wah Wah” (C/ Riera Baixa, 14. www.wah-wahsupersonic.com +34 93 44 23 703). Wah Wah is a small legendary outlet in the Raval neighbourhood and is considered a paradise for record collectors and aficionados. For books, head to Altair (C/Gran Via, 616 (between c/ Balmes i Rambla de Catalunya) + 34 93 34 27 171 www.altair.es. 10 am – 2 pm. 4.30 pm – 8.30 pm). Every great city has some special magic about it – unique cuisine, striking colours – something that makes it like nowhere else. Barcelona is so original. People from all over the world fall head over heels in love with it. We asked René to leave us with a very special experience, unique to his adopted home. He told us that something that Barcelona offers is the fact that you can go skiing in the morning (in the Pyrenees, about 90 minutes away) and be back at night to go and surf the last waves! How cool and hot is that? || Mary Carey
