Dear friends,
A Message from the Executive Director
Thank you for taking the time to review our Annual Report and for being an integral part of the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club community. Your support is vital to our mission to serve and empower kids and teens in New York City and helped make 2023 another successful year.
We recognize that every young person who walks through our doors is on a unique journey, shaped by the ever-evolving world around them. Recent years have been a testament to our resilience as an organization, a community and our city as a whole. Our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our members remains steadfast, and we continue to reflect and update our programming to best support the individuals and communities we serve.
This year emphasized the crucial role of support systems, mentorship and opportunities for our members to thrive. Acknowledging Madison’s significant legacy and our responsibility to youth in the post-pandemic era, we continue to work toward meeting the evolving needs of our members. In 2023, our communities faced unprecedented obstacles, ranging from trauma and food insecurity to learning setbacks and growing mental health challenges. Thanks to you, we’ve stepped up to meet these needs. Madison continues to support its communities by providing healthy food and supplies, academic scholarships and workforce development opportunities to both members and alumni and investing in our staff through social-emotional and mental health training.
Our organization has taken significant actions to address our financial challenges, however, despite these challenges, our Formula for Impact persists. Crafting emotionally and physically safe environments for young minds is our top priority. The recruitment of top-tier youth development professionals continues to weave a culture of achievement and belonging at our Clubhouses, ensuring our programs are educational and fulfilling for every member.
As we embark on a new year, we are filled with optimism and ready to put our plans into action. On behalf of Madison, I want to express my deepest gratitude to our entire community for enabling our enduring mission to serve and uplift New York City’s youth. Your involvement as a member, family member, partner or donor is invaluable. We eagerly anticipate the incredible achievements of our members in the coming year, and we hope you will remain by our side, playing a critical role in their inspiring journeys. Together, we will continue building a legacy of empowerment and possibility for the children and teens of this great city.
Sincerely,
Tim McChristian Executive Director Madison Square Boys & Girls Club
THE MISSION
of Madison Square Boys & Girls Club is to save and enhance the lives of New York City boys and girls who by reason of economic or social factors are most in need of its services.
Madison’s work centers on its three priority outcome areas:
Academic Success pages 6-7
Good Character & Citizenship pages 8-9
Healthy Lifestyles pages 10-11
Madison’s programs are grounded in the Formula for Impact , our research-based theory of change, and our approach to positive youth development. Youth have the optimal Club experience when members feel physically and emotionally safe, have fun, receive support and recognition from caring adults who set expectations for them and have a sense of belonging. These elements underlie everything we do and guide any related programming or staffing decision.
Formula for Impact
We bring these elements to life in the following ways:
Safe & Friendly Environment.
When youth walk into our doors, they feel welcomed, at ease to be themselves and inspired to engage with others and be part of the community. They know they can count on Madison to provide a solid and consistent presence in their lives and a source of solace and guidance as they navigate life’s transitions.
Open-to-All & Adaptable.
Beyond our staff, Madison cultivates a familial environment in our Clubhouses. Peers support each other, and older youth help younger ones, creating a shared experience in which everyone feels responsible for one another.
Madison knows that all youth are not the same, so our structure is flexible to allow us to serve youth with different needs differently. For some, Madison is a drop-in place where they come to have fun once in a while or seek help with a specific challenge. For others, Madison is a second home, a place to go every day after school and achieve particular goals, such as getting help with homework, developing STEM skills or having the chance to dance. Madison welcomes and accommodates all. We give kids and teens choices to empower them to engage with what interests them.
Relationship-Driven & Staff-Reliant.
At its core, Madison is sustained by and achieves success because of relationships. Our staff is our secret sauce, making the program viable because no matter how compelling the content is, if members do not connect with the staff, they will not want to participate. Our staff is unique because they are excellently trained, come from local communities our youth can identify with and because they love youth. Many were Club members as children, so they can relate to our members’ experiences. Staff become mentors and, often, surrogate parents to members.
Fun. Madison’s programs are anything but a continuation of school. Our activities are engaging and our attitude is playful. We encourage members to work hard to achieve their goals and show them they can do so with a smile. We teach the importance of balance and that there is a time and place to be serious and a time and place to be goofy and light-hearted. Play is the root cause of learning; curiosity fuels skill development and intellectual growth, so Madison programs encourage youth to imagine and experiment, taking the driver’s seat in realizing their dreams.
Opportunities & Expectations.
Madison seeks to allow youth to learn and grow, develop academic, social, and leadership skills, express their creativity, and make college a reality. Along with opportunity, we set expectations and hold youth accountable so they hold themselves to higher standards and achieve beyond what they think is possible.
Acknowledgement & Celebration.
At Madison, no member goes unnoticed. We acknowledge each individual’s presence, opinion, pain, needs, talents and dreams. We celebrate each member’s contribution and recognize their achievements. We showcase members’ work, post birthdays on a public wall calendar and display trophies to honor our members’ lives and accomplishments.
With the above elements in place, our programs build on our members’ strengths, meet them where they are in their development, and foster within them a sense of belonging, empowerment, usefulness and influence that builds self-confidence and self-esteem.
Madison offers a comprehensive educational curriculum to enhance school learning. Our Academic Success programs foster a love of learning, providing mentorship, homework help and college and career exploration. We aim to ensure members graduate high school with a future plan by offering personalized support, STEM education and after-school enrichment throughout the school year and during the summer. Madison’s goal is to guide members from elementary to high school graduation with a view of college and career success as viable and achievable goals.

These caring corporate citizens have partnered with us to find innovative ways to help our young people reach their full potential. We thank them for their ongoing support and commitment to furthering our mission.
Thank you to…
Through its generous multiyear investment, Amex not only provides financial support but also brings its powerful backing and a shared commitment to empowering youth from underrepresented communities. The Amex team has mobilized a dedicated group of colleagues to participate in various volunteer opportunities, including our Food Pantries, mentorship programs, holiday gift-giving initiatives and college and career panels. Their unwavering commitment extends to scholarships for our graduating seniors, active involvement in special events and representation on our Madison Council and Board. We deeply appreciate the strong bond we have forged and are excited for our continued collaboration.
Garden of Dreams makes magic happen for our members both within our Club walls and beyond. Time and again, the Foundation has demonstrated unwavering loyalty and dedication to our mission. In conjunction with our capital campaign, Garden of Dreams fully refurbished our John E. Grimm III Clubhouse in the Bronx and outfitted all of our Clubhouses with state-of-the-art Notes for Notes recording studios. Garden of Dreams has also unlocked life-changing opportunities for our youth — scholarships, game-day tickets, meeting with sports stars and celebrities and the chance to perform in a talent show at Radio City Music Hall. Thank you for helping our youth
The Grubhub Community Fund has committed to a three-year investment that bolsters Madison’s mission, particularly our Healthy Lifestyles programming. Thanks to their substantial support, our Clubhouse kitchens have become vibrant centers of activity. Our members learn cooking skills, explore kid-friendly recipes and acquire the knowledge to establish lifelong healthy habits. Grubhub’s support is vital to youth and families who rely on our Clubs, and we are deeply grateful for their generous support.
realize their dreams!
The Power of Partnerships
This long-standing partnership is truly multifaceted, with Invesco representatives serving on our Board and Madison Council and supporting our annual events. Invesco also participates in the Equity Collective, a consortium of asset management firms committed to introducing diverse youth to finance careers. Through our collaboration, Invesco employees mentor our youth, providing resume development, mock interviews and leadership training. Their support ensures the continuation of our high-quality programs, preparing youth for successful futures.
For over 19 steadfast years, Hearst has stood shoulderto-shoulder with Madison, unwavering in their commitment to our mission. Year after year, they have supported our hallmark fundraising events — Christmas Tree Ball, Youth of the Year Dinner and our Fore the Kids Golf Tournament. They provided crucial support during our Building Hope Campaign and critical relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hearst’s ongoing generosity, active involvement and Board representation have truly amplified our impact and bolstered our ability to provide the best facilities, programs and services for the youth we serve. Their support is truly invaluable.
This year, the Wells Fargo Foundation amplified its commitment to Madison through a substantial grant to bolster our financial literacy programs. This contribution empowers more young people to acquire the skills that pave the way toward workplace readiness, financial stability and lifelong success. At the 2023 Youth of the Year Dinner, we had the privilege of honoring Wayne Hewett, a corporate board member of Wells Fargo, and celebrating his contributions as well as those of the company in ensuring our youth are prepared for great futures. We deeply appreciate Wells Fargo’s representation on our Board, generosity, partnership and belief in our mission.
We are grateful for the opportunity to deepen our partnership with Morgan Stanley over the past several years. Through board representation, Madison Council membership and employee engagement, our collaboration has blossomed. At our 2023 Youth of the Year Dinner, we had the privilege of honoring Boys & Girls Club alum and Morgan Stanley Executive, Mandell Crawley. The company’s remarkably generous investment as a presenting sponsor continues to inspire and uplift our mission, and we remain very grateful.
Madison is immensely grateful for our partnership with the New York Yankees and their foundation. They provide critical programmatic support for our two Bronx sites: the Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse and the John E. Grimm III Clubhouse. During the pandemic, the Yankees supported our Food Pantry program, aiding families in need at a time of growing food insecurity. They also donate a suite annually for our Yankees Fundraiser event and have given our Madison members countless unforgettable experiences, including game tickets, home-plate ceremonies and the chance to meet their heroes on the field.

Mrs. Mele Gaudieri joined Madison’s Board of Trustees in 1970 and served until her passing. She was dedicated to Madison’s mission for more than five decades, leaving a tremendous legacy of generosity and kindness. She remained a constant and joyous presence at many Christmas Tree Balls over her 53-year tenure.
Mrs. Mele Gaudieri will be dearly missed by the Madison family, yet her legacy lives on in the amazing potential in NYC youth. Our deepest sympathies go to her family and friends. We will continue to celebrate her life and honor her legacy through our important work.
