Dear friends,
Thank you for reviewing our Annual Report and for being an essential part of the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club community. Your support has been vital to our mission of serving and empowering New York City’s youth, helping us create meaningful impact throughout 2024 and positioning us for continued success.
This year was especially meaningful as we celebrated Madison’s 140th anniversary — a testament to over a century of dedication to creating brighter futures for New York City’s youth. This extraordinary milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to helping generations of young people discover their passions, build confidence and pursue their dreams. Our Clubhouses are more than just buildings — they are incubators of ambition where dreams take flight. Through programs in dance, sports, academics and more, young people develop the skills and resilience they need to transform aspirations into achievements.
2024 was a year of growth and momentum. After several years of financial challenges, we embarked on a promising new chapter. Youth enrollment increased compared to the prior year, reinforcing the vital role Madison plays in providing safe, nurturing spaces for young people to thrive. Our collective efforts have strengthened our programs, ensuring that every child who walks through our doors has the resources and support they need to succeed. As you’ll see in this report, Madison continues to be a launching pad for dreams.
Throughout 2024, we recognized the persistent challenges that shaped our communities — from food insecurity to housing shortages and mental health concerns. Thanks to your generosity, we responded with critical resources, including nutritious meals, academic tools and emotional wellness programs. Building on that foundation, this year marked a period of renewed optimism, innovation and resilience. With your support, we continued to expand opportunities for our members, equipping them with the skills and confidence to build brighter futures.
As we continue to celebrate this extraordinary 140th milestone, we remain steadfast in our commitment to expanding and refining our programs to better serve the evolving needs of New York City’s youth. On behalf of Madison, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our entire community — your involvement as partners, donors and advocates makes it possible for us to continue being a place where big dreams find their wings.
Here’s to another year of impact, growth and opportunity as we honor Madison’s legacy and work together to empower the next generation to dream big and unlock their full potential.
Sincerely,
Tim McChristian Executive Director Madison Square Boys & Girls Club
of Madison Square Boys & Girls Club is to save and enhance the lives of New York City boys and girls who, by reason of economic or social factors are most in need of its services.
Madison’s work centers on its three priority outcome areas:
Academic Success pages 6-7
Good Character & Citizenship pages 8-9
Healthy Lifestyles pages 10-11
Madison’s programs are grounded in the Formula for Impact , our research-based theory of change and our approach to positive youth development. Youth have the best Club experience when they feel physically and emotionally safe, have fun and a sense of belonging, and receive support and recognition from caring adults who set expectations for them. These values drive everything we do, from our programming to our staffing.
We bring these elements to life in the following ways:
When young people enter our Clubhouses, they feel welcomed, comfortable being themselves, eager to connect and inspired to be a part of the community. They count on Madison for stability and support as they navigate life’s transitions and challenges.
Madison recognizes that every young person is unique, so our structure is flexible to meet diverse needs. For some, Madison serves as a dropin space for occasional fun or help with specific challenges. For others, it becomes a second home — a place to go every day after school to achieve goals like completing homework, building STEM skills, or pursuing a passion for music. Madison welcomes and supports everyone, providing kids and teens with opportunities to explore their interests.
Staff-Reliant. At its core, Madison is driven by relationships, which are the foundation of its success. Our staff is the cornerstone of our programs, ensuring their impact goes beyond great content. No matter how engaging the activities are, it’s the connections members form with our staff that truly make a difference. Our team is exceptional — highly trained, rooted in the local communities our youth call home, and driven by a genuine care for young people. Many of them were Club kids themselves, giving them a unique ability to relate to and inspire our members.
family within our Clubhouses. Members support one another, with older youth guiding younger ones, creating a culture of shared responsibility and belonging. This close-knit environment ensures that every individual feels valued and connected.
Staff members often become mentors and, in many cases, surrogate parents, providing a level of care that extends far beyond traditional roles. Madison fosters a strong sense of
Fun. Madison’s programs are far from an extension of the school day. Our activities are exciting, and our approach is full of joy. We inspire members to strive for their goals while showing them that hard work can be paired with a positive attitude and play. We emphasize the value of balance — knowing when to focus and when to have fun. Play is at the heart of learning, with curiosity driving skill development and intellectual growth. Madison’s programs empower youth to dream, discover and take charge of their own journeys.
Madison is committed to supporting youth in their journeys of learning and growth, equipping them with the essential tools to develop their academic, social and leadership skills. We empower members to explore their creativity and to make college a reality. Beyond offering opportunities, we believe in setting high expectations for our youth, and encouraging them to push beyond what they think they can achieve.
At Madison, every member is seen and valued. We take the time to recognize each person’s thoughts, needs, talents and aspirations. We showcase member’s work, post birthdays on a public wall calendar and display trophies to honor achievements.
Madison provides a comprehensive educational curriculum to enhance school learning. Our Academic Success initiatives cultivate a passion for learning, delivering targeted mentorship, academic assistance, and comprehensive college and career guidance. By offering personalized support, STEM-focused enrichment and year-round programming, we help our members progress from elementary through high school with clear pathways to future success. Our commitment is to transform educational experiences and expand possibilities for every student, ensuring they graduate with confidence and strategic life plans.

On December 1, 2023, we rang in the holiday season with friends and supporters at Madison’s 57th annual Christmas Tree Ball, held at the magical Cipriani 42nd Street. The event, featuring dance and vocal performances by Madison members and inspiring stories of triumph from Madison alums, raised over $1 million to support Madison’s mission to uplift and empower kids and teens in New York City. The evening included its signature silent and live auctions, providing guests the chance to win once-in-a-lifetime experiences and prizes.
Madison Council’s 5th annual Mardi Gras MAD-squerade was held March 1, 2024, at Tanner Smith’s. A signature cocktail event, the evening featured a silent auction and brought together young professionals from across NYC. Raising nearly $28,000, the event celebrated honoree Andrew Todres for his commitment to serving and empowering kids and teens.
Madison’s 30th annual Fore the Kids Golf Tournament was held at Baltusrol Golf Club on August 12, 2024. Over 100 golfers turned out to support Madison and enjoy a day of golf followed by dinner and an exciting live auction overlooking the course at sunset.
Over 400 guests attended Madison’s 12th annual Youth of the Year Dinner on May 15, 2024, at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers. The evening honored Youth of the Year ambassadors from each Clubhouse, celebrating our members for their outstanding achievements, demonstrated leadership and academic success. Our five Youth of the Year inspired supporters and friends of Madison with their stories of personal triumph in the face of extreme adversity. MADISON MEMORIAM
Madison Square Boys & Girls Club mourns the loss of Steven Salomon Elbaum, an extraordinary leader, friend and advocate for youth. Steven joined the Madison Board in March 2019, serving on the Brooklyn Advisory Board, on the Board of Directors (2019-2025), and most recently as Chairman of the Board (2023-2025). His impact on our organization was profound, setting a standard of excellence and compassion that will forever be woven into the fabric of our institution.
Alongside his family, Steven co-founded the Elbaum Family Clubhouse in Brownsville, Brooklyn — his childhood neighborhood — a lasting testament to his vision of empowering young people and creating opportunities for future generations. His profound impact, generosity and unwavering commitment to Madison’s mission will forever be remembered. We extend our deepest condolences to Steven’s family and loved ones.
