FARMER David Luke and his bulldozer – an inseparable pair and no stranger to the pages of Mackay Local News – are back on mining giant, Adani’s, radar. Maintaining he is a victim of chance and denying any deliberate action, Mr Luke’s trusty yellow partner broke down in the middle of Moray Carmichael Boundary road, the only available access connecting the mine to the neighbouring cattle properties. An active voice in the community, Mr Luke has been fighting a long battle against the miner, claiming Adani’s Bravus Resources had not paid its bills and honoured contracts to build an access road to the mine. In a bold move in March, Mr Luke threatened to use their bulldozer to block the mine-access road and stop thousands of trucks and the Carmichael coal mine construction. Destiny apparently has acted in Mr Luke’s favour, as his truck ended up blocking the road for a few hours. As a result, the police were called to assist with the vehicle’s removal. In a note to the press yesterday, Adani said that “at approximately 8.30 am, the dozer was removed, and the road has now reopened.”

BULLDOZER: David Luke on his big machine earlier this year. “We continue to work with Isaac Regional Council and Queensland Government to resolve the final design features for specific sections of the Mine Access Road, and this process is nearing completion,” the statement said. Despite the incident, Mr Luke’s unhappiness with the coal mine still grows. He claims that the company is falling short of its commitments in delivering an alternative road. Added to this is the safety question involving the whole community in the area.
“There is the noise, body light, and safety of animals or horses across the road in front of a house.” Hundreds of trucks and cars use Moray Carmichael Boundary road daily to reach the mine, hardening even further the residents living in the region. “(The road) is vital because it’s my right to get here or get past it to get to the properties. Now, they (Adani) are using the road as a mining access road. So it is no longer a
country road,” Mr Luke pointed out. Bravus has told Mackay Local News that it had, “agreed to fund some fencing and a temporary road away from Mr David Luke’s property, which Isaac Regional Council will construct. “The permanent road upgrade, which will be even further away from Mr Luke’s property, will be built as part of the overarching Mine Access Road upgrade that is currently underway,” the statement said.
