THE residents of Campwin Beach have had enough.

Some in the small beach-side hamlet are threatening ‘vigilante justice’ if something is not done about a huge spike in crime in their neighbourhood.

Every night, residents are reporting yet another incident where a home, shed, yard, car or boat is being broken into or property is either vandalised or stolen. Elderly residents are being terrified by intruders in their homes and the whole community is fearful – and furious, with some threatening they might need to arm themselves to keep themselves and their neighbours safe.

Blame is being cast upon a group of youths living in a nearby ‘half-way house’ – one resident even received a note of apology from one of the kids living there.

Residents are working with police and are supporting each other via social media groups. And an informal Neighbourhood Watch now giving residents at least some peace of mind.

A RECENT analysis of the vocational enrolment trends at CQUniversity shows that TAFE level study isn’t just for school leavers and young people, with vocational course enrolments up across most age groups and the average age of a VET student being 30 years old. The university said the average age statistic is a long-standing and consistent one, and is due to the fact that people realise the benefits of holding a vocational qualification.

A WORKFORCE shortage is leading Mackay Animal Care Centre (RSPCA Queensland) to urgently call for local volunteers willing to help dogs and cats in search of a new home.

Susan Armstrong, Animal Care Manager, says the centre has several roles to be immediately filled. Foster carers (primarily for medium to large dogs and adult cats); adoptions and admin assistant; dog care; gardening and maintenance; drivers; and community crew (for fundraisers and events) are open opportunities.

“Interested people can apply to volunteer online via www.rspcaqld.org.au. There is a specific section for volunteering and which area you want to volunteer in, for example, Mackay,” Ms Armstrong said.

“Normally, we require 1×4-hour shifts per week for three-months’ commitment. A love of animals and good animal experience is a bonus.”

Volunteer shifts usually are from 8.30 am to 12.30 and from 1 pm to 5 pm. The centre operates seven days per week. Currently, ten cats and six dogs are available for adoption, while the other animals on site are still in the process of getting adopted.

According to RSPCA Queensland, many dogs and cats in their shelters have had a rough start, which means they will be in long-term care as they recover and learn to trust humans again.

Heading up to her third year as a volunteer at the Mackay RSPCA, Carol Dempsey cannot hide her emotions when describing her tasks as a foster carer.

“I love it. I do three shifts a week. It is the most rewarding volunteer job you can ever do, especially if we get little tiny baby kittens that need to be bottle-fed,” Ms Dempsey said.

“Seeing them grow into independent little kittens, so they can go to a new home, is the most amazing feeling.”

Ms Dempsey also emphasised the need for

more volunteers. “We definitely are desperate for volunteers, volunteers. We just don’t get enough and we are always looking for reliable people who love animals,” she said.

Dozer dodges death

By DAVID LORNIE DOZER the Dog is a lucky guy indeed.

Somwhere along the line, he had picked up a poisonous tick and, as far as can be gathered, was cast on the street by his owners.

Perhaps they couldn’t afford the vet treatment which can run into hundreds of dollars and more.

Without medical help and scavenging for whatever food scraps he could find, Dozer’s time was running out.

Enter the Mackay Animal Rescue Society (MARS).

“Dozer was found wandering the streets underweight and not in the best of health,” said MARS President Peta Kelly.

“Dozer came to us via the Animal Management Centre (The Pound) when we received a call asking for help with a dog that had a paralysis tick and was going downhill fast.

“We collected Dozer and rushed him straight to Better Pet Vets for treatment. He was hospitalised at the vets for four days for the tick treatment and associated complications, as well as a discovered chest infection that required treatment.”

Though on his last legs, Dozer fought hard to survive.

“A plea to the public raised just over $900 to go towards his treatment costs and MARS was so overwhelmed with the generosity of the animal-loving community,” said Peta.

Dozer was moved to a foster carer’s home where it was thought he would take up to a month to recover.

But Dozer is a tough guy and surprised everyone with his fast recovery. Within a couple of weeks he was back up to speed.

“One look at him and we knew we had to meet him,” Jessica said.

“We instantly fell in love with him when we met him and had to bring him home. Seeing what he had been through, at only two years old, we knew that he needed to be

in a loving home and we think he is perfect for our little family.”

Customers in Marian and Mirani are set to have access to ultrafast broadband following NBN Co’s announcement of the latest tranche of suburbs and towns across Australia that will become eligible to upgrade to NBN’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, welcomed today’s announcement

by NBN Co identifying the locations of an additional 300,000 homes and businesses which will be able to access ultrafast internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps (one gigabit per second, otherwise known as 1,000 megabits per second – or blazing fast broadband).

“This is a further step towards delivering on NBN Co’s commitment as part of the $4.5 billion network upgrades announced last year, that two million premises presently on the fibre to the node footprint will be able to order a service of up to 1 Gbps by the end of 2023.”

Minister Fletcher said.

Work on the 1.1 million premises in the Fibre to the Node network areas selected for up-

grade is underway and today’s announcement takes the total footprint to 1.4 million premises selected.

Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, said that as well as the benefits that faster internet can provide, this investment by NBN Co will provide a much-needed boost to economic activity and employment in the region.

“The commencement of these works by NBN Co will create jobs for the Marian and Mirani community and support local businesses by allowing them to take advantage of the benefits that ultrafast broadband can provide,” Ms Landry said.

Farewell to ‘Queen’

By CHARLIE PAYNE SARINA’S queen of the cent sale Jenny Miotto is about to abdicate.

After 25 years of cent sales and other fundraising Jenny has raised about $300,000 for the children’s charity the Variety Club, plus large amounts for Sarina community groups who have teamed with her to host events.

She is joining with the Sarina cheerleaders group Prime Cheer for a cent sale at Bob Wood Community Hall on Sunday, September 12, and is planning for a major event at the same venue on December 5 as her finale.

“I’m trying to wind down, I’m trying to pass it on,” she said.

“I’ve always been a part of Variety, and I always will be.”

But Jenny will continue supporting Variety, starting with promoting and helping one of its major events, the Jet Trek, which starts at Mackay on March 22 next year.

About 60 jet ski riders will make their way up the coast over six days to Port Douglas near Cairns, calling in at Bowen, Townsville and Mission Beach.

She said raising money

for Variety was rewarding.

“You can see where your money goes; the kids get so excited when they receive their items.

“Whether it’s helping the blind kids, or wheelie walkers, or a little child who gets a guide dog which becomes their life support, it’s wonderful to see.”

While Jenny has headed the organisation of her many cent sales, she emphasized that it was not all about her.

“It’s not just me who has raised the $300,000, it’s been a friends and family affair,” she said. “My family all help: my mum Margaret, my daughter Lisa who does the catering, grandkids Jaxon and Lahni, brothers Don and Darrel, and nephews Kane, Tom and Anthony. They all love doing it.

“My son Scott and daughter-in-law Norelle are the next generation of support for Variety.

“We also have had great support from the people involved with the community groups which have teamed with us for sales.”

These include Sarina’s scouts, the Patriots motorcycle group, RSL, bowls club, Sarina Arts and Crafts and the men’s shed, all of which have raised valuable

AnN ALLIANCE of 21 community, medical and legal groups in Queensland representing doctors, nurses, ambulance officers and terminally ill Queenslanders has written to state MPs urging them to support the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill (2021).

The bill is due to be debated in parliament in mid-September. The open letter urges MPs to vote YES to the legislation, saying more than 80 percent of Queenslanders are in support of allowing eligible terminally ill people, who are suffering intolerably, a choice about dying.

The cent sale is an important step for the Prime Cheer cheerleaders, who

one day hope to have their own training venue.

The club of 60 girls aged from 5 to 17 trains at the Sarina Darts Hall under coaches Lauren Malayta and Sammy Cole.

Although only in its second year, the club competed in a regional competition in

Mackay with five teams and won placings in all categories.

“We want to become more established so we’re seeking support from our community through grants for a shed and talking to the council about acquiring some land,” Lauren said.

“At the moment it’s allgirl, but we’d love to have some boys join us,” she said.

The cent sale on behalf of the Variety Club and Sarina’s Prime Cheer cheerleaders, Bob Wood Hall is on Sunday, September 12.

Pensioner peed off, by George

SHE likes to make a point, but Patrice46 – or namely, Patricia Rolt – was rather taken aback by email correspondence from George Christensen, labelling the outgoing Federal Member for Dawson as “thick” and “rude”.

It all started when Patricia sent an email to Mr Christensen at 7.42pm on Tuesday, August 10.

The subject line of that email read, “Are you sure masks don’t work?”.

In the body of the email appeared a meme likening mask-wearing (or otherwise) to urinating on someone in the event that neither, one or both were wearing pants at the time.

(We know it’s a toughie to explain, so the meme in question is pictured on the front page.)

Prompt in his response, George replied, at 8.54pm: “Nice explainer. Do you piss your pants, do you? Not sure that’s got anything to do with masks”.

At 8.32am the following day, Patricia responded: “You are obviously thicker than I originally thought. Also, quite rude – I’m sure the local newspaper and the constituents of Dawson would love to see your reply to me”.

Then, on August 27 she emailed Mackay Local News, stating: “I was alarmed to see George Christensen stand up in parliament and announce that face masks don’t work, so I decided to email his office with an analogy. The emails are listed below. Patrice46.”

When we approached Patrice46, asking her to speak with us and have her photo taken, she replied with a polite “No thank you”, citing that she was not “interested in any notoriety”.

“I am an old-age pensioner and am due to get my second AstraZeneca vaccination in two weeks, and am unable to understand the mentality of the COVID deniers and those that are an-

ti-vaxxers and can’t follow simple stay at home requests unless it is essential to leave home for medical help, essential food supplies, etc,” she said.

“What is really infuriating is when people who are supposedly representing others (eg.

George Christensen) do something so irresponsible and in such a public place.

“It is also my understanding that he attended a protest about loss of freedoms.”

Patricia then cut and pasted a piece of writing from the internet which represented her feelings on this matter. It’s too long to publish here.

“long line” of similar correspondents seeking to make a point. “The emailer shouldn’t get too upset” he said.

“They join a long line of rude or abusive emailers who’ve copped a blunt response back from me over the past 11 years.

“And yes, they’re often shocked that a MP would dare take them on at their own level.

“If you dish it out, you have to be able to take it, in my books. They normally don’t try it on again after that.”

And as for the topic at hand?

“I would think that wearing a mask to stop an aerosol virus is nothing like peeing your pants and not being able to pee on other people’s pants.” Mr Christensen said.

“Then again I’ve never tried it myself which is why I asked the emailer if they had.”

IN A first for the industry, the Connecting Coal Conference Queensland will present decision makers from seven major metallurgical and torbanite projects based in the Bowen Basin who have all come together to present their plans for construction and development. Vital role NEW research reveals green sea turtles and dugongs play a crucial role in protecting the health of the Great Barrier Reef, by helping vital seagrass meadows flourish. The two animals, known as marine mega-herbivores, eat mostly seagrass, and regularly ingest seagrass fruits and seeds. A recent paper co-authored by Dr Samantha Tol during her PhD candidature with James Cook University found once seeds are passed in the mega-herbivores’ faeces, they decreased the time to germination in one species of seagrass by up to 60 per cent, and increased the chances of germination by up to 400 per cent.

Not open BLUEWATER Lagoon will not reopen as planned this week as council is investigating serious structural issues. A new reopening date is unknown until the extent of the structural concerns is determined, and a plan is put in place to remedy them. Mackay Council will keep the public updated and in the interim is providing free entry at the Mackay ARC on Saturdays and Sundays. Mayor Greg Williamson said staff recently identified the lagoon was losing a significant amount of water towards the end of the winter shutdown. He said preliminary investigations showed damage to pipes in the complex.

Sport stars

FOR 30 years the North Queensland Sport Foundation (NQSF) has been recognising and celebrating the north’s sports stars.

This year, after a 2020 hiatus, the Foundation, of which Mackay Regional Council is a member, is going all out. Awards and thousands of dollars in prize money will be presented across seven categories. Nominations are now open and residents are encouraged to nominate our local sports stars. Council said the NQ Hall of Fame would be included in the 2021 NQ Sportstar Awards in Charters Towers on October 30.

Beach communities fight back

By JULIANO OLIVEIRA CAMPWIN Beach and Sarina Beach communities are staggering under a succession of crimes, with daily reports of break-ins and thefts prompting residents to start a state petition.

Social media channels fed by locals are overflowing with bleak and sobering stories. Last week, a frustrated break-in attempt at an elderly resident’s property gained the spotlight. As a result, she is now afraid of leaving home.

Due to the escalating crime, an outcry for responses against the offenders has started to pop up frequently.

“I’m prepared to cause an act of war on these people,” wrote a resident to Mackay City Council.

The community describes the offenders as teenagers and occupants of a halfway house run by the Integrated Family and Youth Service Administration (IFYS) situated within the region. Lately, the organisation has

been accused of allegedly leaving its youngsters unsupervised after 10 pm.

“Cars and caravans have gone, homes and sheds have been broken. Most of the homeowners have the general belief that it’s related to what’s being described as a halfway house that moved into the Lake Area late last year,” said a resident who, fearing reprisals, asked not to be identified.

“I have been here for some years, and I certainly haven’t seen crime rates like this before. We are a little community that’s probably a reasonable proportion of older residents and older homes. This means they’re easier to break into and less likely to be heard. I have had to increase security around my home. For example, my lights are on at night now, something

that I didn’t use to do.

“I’m looking at upgrading other elements of my security.”

A petition to the Queensland Government requesting the removal of the juvenile accommodation to another area has been brought forward by a group of residents.

In addition, there has been a push for the same purpose with the Council.

“This is where we’re starting. It’s almost like a bit of a reaction to a natural disaster,” a homeowner said.

Residents have spoken with Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson and Mirani MP Stephen Andrew, who pledged to support better community safety action.

Home break-in

MILTON Street resident Clair Smith had her house broken into on Sunday, 22, amid NQ’s Rock’n Country celebrations.

While she was away from the house for a few minutes to buy dinner, Ms Smith came across traces that something wasn’t normal when she returned home.

The front screen door had been melted away entirely by flames and the mat at her back door was on fire.

“That was a big indicator someone had been by because we always shut our door,” she said.

Upon entering the house, Ms Smith saw that her TV was out of place. Draws had been rummaged through, and her PlayStation 4 ripped out of the wall.

“I called out to my housemate (who was at home during the incident) to see if everything was OK. She said she hadn’t noticed anything because of the noise coming from the festival,” Ms Smith said.

Police officers on the scene described the offenders as a small group who break into properties and set fires around the latches of screen doors so that they can reach in and unlock the door.

“I’m angry that these people are so confident doing what they are doing, and it bothers me that they are making people scared. So please keep checking your doors and checking on your neighbour,” Ms Smith said.

“Some young offenders have been identified for those offences. So yes, some have come from these residential care houses, but others have not.

So it’s not entirely true to say that all the offences have been committed by young people housed at those locations,” Inspector Armitt said.

“We’ve been engaging with the residential care facility. We’ve been doing that since early this year. There are a number of kids who’ve since been rehoused in other locations.

“Obviously, when trouble arises, we’ll liaise with the residential care facility to seek good outcomes for the community. We don’t want the community or the surroundings to become targeted for crime. At the same time, we’re also talking about children, either through neglect or abuse or other issues are also in need of care, regardless of their own offending behaviour.”

“A number of premises are left open. Some vehicles are left open with casing, ignition and things like that. And although it’s an idyllic place to live, people still have to take responsibility for their own personal security and just do their best to deny criminals the opportunity to commit offences,” he said.

Mackay Local News has contacted IFYS by email and telephone but no reply has been received as yet.

Pets pilfered TWO hand-raised young lambs and one piglet have been reported stolen from a petting zoo on Andergrove Road, North Mackay.

According to the Queensland Police Department, between 6pm on August 29 and 6am on August 30, criminals entered a locked and fully fenced yard to steal the animals. Access is obtainable to the yard from vehicles by the nearby Lenesha Drive.

Devastated, MAD Animal Addiction has called the robbery “Ridiculous” on its Facebook page. Simultaneously, the petting zoo has received several messages of support from the community.

“That is so sad. My grandkids love it when we go past your little paddock,” posted a resident.

Police treating dead body as murder

THE Queensland Police Service has announced that it will treat as a homicide the investigation around human remains found on a rural property at Ilbilbie on Sunday.

Mackay Detective Inspector Tom Armitt said on Monday (30) there are strong indications that the dead body belongs to missing woman Rene Latimore, of Koumala.

“We strongly believe that the person found is Rene Latimore, who has been missing since August 9. Due to circumstances, we are conducting a homicide investigation from here.

“We are appealing to members of the public that anyone who’s had any contact with Rene in the lead up to her going missing; any conversations that they had, what the state of her mindset was at that particular point in time.

“Any fears or concerns that she expressed to them, any contract that they had made with them. It’s vitally important that we know, we really need to discover anybody who’s had any contact with Rene leading up to her disappearance.”

“Some people just have to spoil what others love. I really love going for a walk to feed the animals and taking the kids when they visit,” said another comment.

The body was found in the same rural property in which a neighbour had supposedly run down Mackay City Councillor Martin Bella in a separate incident. Recently, the politician bought the property at Ilbilbie where Ms Latimore lived with her family.

“I understand that the property’s been in the possession of the family for quite some time (previous owners) and only recently was purchased,” Inspector Armitt said.

“When I say recently, it is that the family have not left that property yet, and I’m not sure on the financial transfer or whether that has been finalised at this particular point.”

Respect, discipline need to be instilled A BOLD nation-building proposal to combat youth crime and foster our youth’s sense of self-worth and identity been put forward by a leading Mackay men’s mental health advocate.

It addresses issues that go to the heart of who we are as a society. It affects us all on a hyperlocal, state and national level.

Titled “National Commitment”, the proposal has been outlined and submitted by retired infantry soldier and current Mackay Local News columnist Frank Cowell.

Frank is the founder of International Men’s Day, Mackay, which incorporates Shed Happens, Mackay. His proposal was sent to Dawson MP George Christensen some time ago by Frank and he is keen for it to attract wider public attention and debate.

The paper is presented below. We’ll be seeking input and comments from local, state and national leaders on this issue. We’ll also seek input from people working in the field of youth issues, social services, law enforcement and men’s mental health.

And importantly, we’ll be asking, you, our local community members for opinions and input. Have a read of the proposal below and let us know your thoughts.

Training method All participants to complete three months in barrack basic training, three-six months specific employment training and 12-18 months onthe-job training.

After the full time commitment is completed, participants are to complete two lots of two-week continuation training per year to maintain and be updated in skills and abilities.

Eligible personnel All persons living permanently in Australia, naturalised or not, on turning 18 years of age. Handicapped or disabled persons are to be assessed and employed where able, in consultation with a selection panel and carers.

Functions Government: 1. To develop the infrastructure to provide full time barrack accommodation to support the commitment; 2. To professionalise all existing volunteer organisations so that participants in National Commitment can be employed; 3. To provide a structure for National Commitment to be implemented; 4. To provide incentive for training organisations to expand and provide the training professionals to support National Commitment; 5. To provide incentives to business to employ personnel on parttime commitment; 6. Initiate a Highway Patrol or-

ganisation as part of the Federal Police and standardise road rules nationally.

Private Enterprise: 1. Provide a percentage of job placements reserved for personnel on National Commitment; and, 2. Allow personnel on part-time commitment to be paid a small percentage of their wage while away training and/or on deployment.

Training Basic Training would include the following subjects: 1.Physical Fitness; 2. Nutrition; 3.Team building; 4. First Aid; 5. Foot drill; 6. Personal financial management; 7. History - indigenous, European, Middle Eastern; and Government.

quired to spend the first 12 weeks in a slimming and fitness program to lower their weight to a standard where training can be conducted.

On completion they could begin basic training.

Those handicapped or disabled personnel could be placed on a modified program to cater to their abilities.

Aptitude and psychological testing conducted during basic training would be used as a guide to possible employment opportunities.

Employment categories National commitment would include the following employments: 1. Defence; 2. Emergency Services; 3. Civil Support; 4. Environment; 5. Social Services; 6. Health and welfare.

Conclusion National commitment will ensure that unemployment among the youth is reduced severely and will give youth a renewed pride in their country.

Racial and sex discrimination will be reduced while the population will be skill enhanced in life and vocational skills.

“Firstly, we all come out of the womb on equal footing and it is our experiences and input by trusted adults that shape our ideals and behaviours, good and bad.

“Secondly, when we learn anti social behaviours that have us breaking the law, there must be a process to bring us back to within societies legal guidelines.

“Thirdly, we must remove people with anti social behaviours from the influences that cause or incite them to reoffend.

“Fourthly, we must build up their self respect and give them meaningful work at the end of any program.

“The people we associate with will drive our behaviour, positive encouraging people will build us up, negative discouraging people will keep us down only to reoffend.”

Mackay just like home for Raj MOVING to Mackay was a bit like coming home for Bangalore-born Raj Krishnaswarmy.

“The sugarcane, coconuts and mangoes remind me of my hometown in India, along with the warm climate and friendly faces,” Mr Krishnaswarmy (pictured right) said.

The new Mackay resident has taken on the Finance and Operations Manager role at Mater Private Hospital Mackay, moving north from Geelong where he lived for the past two years.

“I saw the role advertised in Mackay and thought it was an amazing career opportunity,” Mr Krishnaswamy said.

“It’s a great chance to work for a care-focused organisation and to make a sea change to somewhere warmer.

“My role will focus on sustainability and future planning in all areas of the hospital, including workforce management, relationship-building within the medical community, capital planning and designing new service offerings.

Free financial help LOCAL primary producers and rural businesses will continue to have access to free financial counselling until 2024 with further joint funding by the Australian and Queensland governments. Federal Minister for National Recovery and Resilience, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie, said the Rural Financial Counselling Service in Queensland would receive over $10.6 million from the Australian Government to support Queenslanders in rural areas who are doing it tough. “The Australian Government is investing more than $61 million nationally over three years in the RFCS including an additional $5 million boost announced as part of the 2021-22 Budget,” Minister McKenzie said.

“On the back of droughts, floods and other challenges, Queensland primary producers and rural businesses have taken a hit with the loss of the backpacker workforce and tourism due to COVID-19. “The Australian Government is committed to providing this valuable service to rural and regional Queenslanders.”

Palliative care boon THE Federal Coalition Government has committed $8 million in funding to the Fitzroy Community Hospice which will provide access to comprehensive community-based palliative care to Central Queensland.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the 12-bed facility based in Rockhampton will be the first regional Hospice in the state and will provide dedicated, holistic end-of-life care in the community and support families and carers. “Adequate access to palliative care in Central Queensland has been a concern raised with me for some time,” Ms Landry said. “I met with staff and board of the Fitzroy Community Hospice in June and I am pleased this centre will be able to support and guide patients and their families through the most difficult of times when it is up and running. “I fought hard for this service as it is absolutely crucial that comprehensive access to community-based palliative care is available in Central Queensland.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Barnaby Joyce, credited Ms Landry for her fierce advocacy for her electorate.

OUR region’s more remote communities are about to be connected like never before thanks to the new GW3, BHP and Telstra Smart Transformation initiative. The Smart Transformation Advisory Councils (STACs) in Moranbah and Dysart – along with partners BHP, Telstra and the Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) - has announced a $3.5 million project to provide enhanced digital connectivity to both towns to support current and new businesses and industry; schools and community groups. With the support of major funders BHP and Telstra and assistance from the Federal Government, the project will allow both towns to enjoy faster and more reliable internet speeds, as well as capitalise on opportunities stemming from the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and support the communities’ ongoing pandemic recovery. Smart Transformation aims to support these two towns transform and access the opportunities new technology provides.

‘Magic’ virus killer Measures put in place by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) during the COVID-19 pandemic are here to stay, after having created flow-on benefits for the business.

Early last year, the RFDS implemented the use of a fogging agent to disinfect aircraft following the transfer of potentially infectious patients.

Now, MicroSafe Australia’s product Nanocyn is being used to disinfect aircraft prior to the transfer of immunocompromised patients, as well as during regular cleaning activities. The Flying Doctor often transports patients with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients. RFDS (Queensland Section) State Manager Aeromedical Nursing Jacinta Jones said it takes just 30 seconds for the product to work its magic. “In just 30 seconds, the technology can kill viruses and bacteria, making it the perfect solution to clean and disinfect the aircraft which may transport up to seven different patients each day,” she said.

Making care easier

LOCAL NDIS participants can now more easily find the support they need with the booking app and website Kynd now catering for our region.

Kynd simplifies the process of finding and booking NDIS support workers.

It allows NDIS Participants or their families to connect and directly book support workers, rather than waiting for large organisations to respond.

Taking out the middleman enables people with the right skill set – and also similar interests – to more easily connect, allowing for meaningful relationships and genuine help.

The site was conceived by Queenslander Michael Metcalfe whose introduction to

the disability and carer sector was through a family incident.

“Back in the day, with family, Mum had a fall at home and suddenly Dad had to jump in and be a fulltime carer. This was the thing that kind of opened our eyes to both the disability space and the care space and just looking at how support works in Australia,” he told this newspaper.

“And I was pretty shocked to find out how it didn’t work, even a couple of years ago. I had a background in building experiences and building services so decided to build a new one.”

The site has now been opened up to people all across Queensland, including our region.

“We aim to provide a faster, easier system than dealing with the NDIS itself,” Michael said.

MACKAY LOCAL NEWS • “The number one (benefit) is speed. So instead of all the delays, all the paperwork, complexity of trying to find an organisation – or sign up to a company – all someone needs to do is jump on the website and they can start browsing different people. So it can happen really quickly. We’ve actually had people get together in less than two hours, in the same area.

“The next one is price. And price in the disability space directly relates to ‘how many hours of support a week does that give me?’

“So, if people have that flexibility to just mutually agree the right hourly rate they think is fair together, it’s a better relationship. It’s also better for the support worker and hopefully means the NDIS participant is also getting more support for their needs.”

So far, Michael has received some good feedback from the public.

Newspaper supports charity Mackay Local News’ office has become the newest collection point of Share the Dignity in a joint effort to raise awareness towards women’s public health.

Share the Dignity is an organisation that acts in favour of women and girls experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough, by distributing sanitary items to those in need and works to end poverty in Australia.

Period products and hygienic items can now be dropped at Suite 5, Level 1, 45 Victoria Street, Mackay CBD. Do-

nations will be distributed to registered foundations across the region.

During a visit to the newspaper, the charities’ coordinator for Mackay, Bessie Thornton, explained the obstacles faced by the organisation in Central Queensland.

“Unfortunately, we don’t easily get the kind of products. Although we serve as about 20 charities, we don’t often get all the supplies we need,” she said.

“Currently, we are looking for 775 pads, 875 tampons, 350 incontinence and 10 cups. To get in contact with the organ-

Mackay Local News eEitor Meredith Papas said the decision to support Share the Dignity and volunteer as a drop-off point for the organisation was an easy one to make.

“We are all about empowering the people in our community who are working to make a real difference and that is exactly what Share the Dignity is doing,” Ms Papas said.

“When we work with our community, it is all about a real and sustainable

effort - whether it be through our columnists, giving light to serious issues in the region or through supporting groups and events which support others.

“There is nothing more powerful than working with like-minded people especially when it comes to making real shifts in our communities - and that’s what we do.

“Share the Dignity is an incredible organisation and they are thinking way beyond the obvious, making the kind of change we want to be a part of and support.”

“It’s been going good, good,” he said. “We’ve been really surprised with, just the uptake in different parts (of Queensland). We always wanted to know ‘is it the same in different regional cities as well?’

“I think it’s reflecting the trend that people want absolute choice and flexibility about the person they choose for support. So not having a stranger turn up – we think it’s all driven by that. They want the exact person that they think is right for them or their family member.”

One in five Queenslanders has a disability – with many unable to access the help they need due to the shortage of support workers through traditional methods.

NDIS figures show there are over 91,000 people registered on the NDIS in our state, but there are just 2550 providers to service their needs.

Grim news on vocational training LAST week marked National Skills Week – a chance to celebrate the value of apprentices and trainees and recognise the importance of hands-on vocational training.

Significantly, National Skills Week was preceded by the release of survey results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, that found more than a quarter (27 percent) of Australian businesses are having difficulty finding suitably skilled staff.

Of the businesses having difficulty finding staff, 66 percent cited applicants not having the required

skills as the reason and 32 percent cited international border closures as a reason.

There can be little doubt that we are in a skills shortage crisis, but it begs the question, how did we get here?

In part employers, particularly big employers, are just not investing enough in training. But it’s mainly a result of the Federal LNP Government which has been importing skilled workers from overseas to meet the labour shortage instead of investing in training opportunities for Australians.

Importing labour may be cheaper than training our own, but the COVID-19 pandemic has totally exposed these vulnerabilities.

Since 2013, the Federal LNP Government has cut $3 billion from TAFEs, traineeships, apprentices.

There are 115,000 less apprentices across Australia

Bennett ONE of my favourite metaphors is the story of the two monks who set out from their monastery on a journey to a far-flung destination.

One of the monks, an older, wiser sage, was a quiet and considered man whose inner light of wisdom had been acquired over many years of contemplation and meditation.

The second monk was younger, energised and enthusiastic, keen to be on the road and to see the sights of a world barely known to him.

Importantly, one of the key rules of the Monastery was that the monks had no contact with women. With this in mind they travelled, often at night, avoiding the villages and main roads on the way to their destination.

On the third day the rain came and the creeks and rivers rose rapidly.

So rapidly, that when they approached the crossing that would normally have been used, it was flooded.

The older monk, knowing of a second crossing higher up stream, set off with his protégé in tow. Coming to that crossing they could hear cries for help and in the middle of the stream was a woman who was trapped by the rising water and in fear of being swept away.

Without hesitation the older monk crossed the rapids, picked the woman up and carried her safely across to the other side of the stream where he calmly put her down and progressed on his way. The young monk seeing this followed and, in his outrage at this action against the rules, began to chastise and rebuke the old man.

He continued to harangue the older monk even as they walked and eventually – as the rain ceased – they found themselves in a clearing. A beautiful forest glade where the sun pierced through the canopy and the water glistened on every leaf.

Here the old man took off his satchel and outer robe and finding a spot where the sun indicated he sit, rested calmly against a rock and, with a sigh of contentment, observed the beauty around him.

The younger monk started again with his angry words until the old man lifted a quiet palm and said simply; “I put that woman down several hours ago, my son. You are still carrying her.”

It resonates doesn’t it? What are you still carrying that you need not?

The results were disastrous. Some unscrupulous providers ran poor quality courses enriching themselves at the expense of taxpayers, students, and the viability of our TAFE system.

Regional residents were also at a greater disadvantage because TAFE is often the only quality provider available in regional centres.

It is a shame that eight years of neglect has gotten us into this mess.

Hypocritically the Morrison Government was just recently trumpeting their big spending on training during National Skills week, trying to pass off the necessity of pandemic spending as a virtue.

Too little too late, I say.

That is over 1000 fewer training opportunities for locals. No wonder local businesses are facing a skills crisis and no wonder we don’t have enough skilled workers across all industries being trained up.

This is an urgent area we need to address to ensure we are training the right people here at home, especially our young people.

QUEENSLAND Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk claims to be protecting Queenslanders from COVID-19 with business-destroying border closures, but her government has failed miserably to protect Queenslanders from skyrocketing crime rates.

Under the Queensland Premier’s watch, crime - and particularly juvenile crime - has spiralled out of control.

Stats from 2015 to 2020 show: n Juvenile assault in Queensland is up 47 percent n Juvenile break ins are up 51 percent n Juvenile robberies up 183 percent n And juvenile motor vehicle offences up 158 percent Sadly, our regional towns are bearing the brunt with numbers showing: n Juvenile assault in Townsville up 78 percent n Juvenile assault in Mackay up 98 percent They’ve had more than six years to fix this issue, but it keeps getting worse.

Queenslanders are fed up. We are already seeing that play out through acts of vigilantism.

Our people are not being protected and are taking matters into their own hands.

We need policies that support the victims, not the perpetrators.

We should be aiming to first protect the community and second to reform the individual.

Boot camps would remove juvenile criminals from community, instil discipline and teach the value of hard work and productivity.

NBL1 teams. It’s been a difficult season all round, but this weekend we’ve stepped it up even further, and yes I’ll be there.

This Saturday is our hockey grand final day down at Harney Street and Bridge Road. There’s going to be people everywhere cheering on their favourite teams after a massive year with the white ball. I won’t be playing as we have been knocked out, the less said about that the better.

All the fun starts early with the A grades going into the afternoon. I will be there as well.

In the middle of all this action on Saturday is the annual Relay for Life at the Botanic Gardens. This year we’ve changed it up so instead of finishing on Sunday morning after sunrise, we are now walking from 2pm Saturday and finishing at 10pm that night.

It’s a great opportunity to remember those we’ve lost to cancer and how we can all raise money to fight this terrible disease. My Mum will be top of my mind for sure. There’s still time to get a last minute team together or just join us on the day and walk. I’d love to see you there.

So with all this activity I reckon get out and enjoy it.

Skills Week a chance to rethink Pierre

Viljoen Professor CQ University NATIONAL Skills Week wrapped up last week and invited Australians to ‘rethink’ their ideas of what Vocational Education and Training (VET) is all about and the role it can have in preparing people for the future of work, especially in a post-pandemic economy.

Held annually, the vision of National Skills Week is to raise awareness on the diversity of careers which can be realised through VET, the skills for an economically viable future, and the incredible range of new jobs and skills in demand for the future.

I have seen first-hand the impact that

VET-trained graduates have had in our region and its economy and am proud to lead a campus that paves the way when it comes to job-ready VET graduates in Mackay.

On the topic of VET in Mackay, one of the emerging areas of VET training is electric and hybrid electric vehicle maintenance.

Increasingly, industry and society more broadly is considering employing renewable and alternative energy sources in vehicles and machinery which spurs the need for specialist mechanics and technicians to service and maintain these vehicles.

One of my medium-term priorities is to see an electric and hybrid vehicle training hub established right here in Mackay, as part of our contribution to future-proofing VET in the region.

Finally, before closing off, I was really pleased to hear the news that two CQU Mackay trained students recently won in

their respective categories at the CQ Regional Queensland Training Awards.

Certificate III in Business student and Erub woman Litia Pitt, who works at Isaac Regional Council, was named Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, and Certificate IV in Human Resources student Liticha McMullen, who works at Mackay Regional Council, was named Equity VET Student of the Year.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both women on their achievements.

The wins truly demonstrate the quality of our vocational education and training at CQUniversity.

KENNETH WILLIAMS: Slightly more famous than Skinhead.

Almost famous? Me too. Well, maybe QUESTION: What would happen if a leading male actor strode naked onto the stage during rehearsals — in the all-together, tackle-obvious, full-frontal, unvarnished, starkers, Adamite, as naked as the day he was born — when the script didn’t demand a nude appearance?

ANSWER (options): (a) He would be ushered off stage and locked in his dressing room until police arrived; (b): @metoo would string him up by his dangly bits and feed him to the baying crowd; (c): The ABC would hold an independent inquisition to find him guilty of whatever Four Corners decided he was guilty of; OR (d): The cast and crew would laugh, point to the “obvious” bits, and ask him if he had been just taken a cold shower?

This is, of course, a hypothetical question because that sort of behaviour would never occur in the Australian theatre scene. So why did I pose this hypothetical question? I’m glad you asked.

I have just read a book titled Almost Famous. It was written by my old mate Robin Hawdon. Never heard of him? Of course you haven’t. He’s the almost famous one — Almost Famous Robin, or AFR for short.

Heard of a bloke called Kenneth Williams? Thought so. He’s famous — Carry On movies and so much more. Well, on one occasion Williams thought it would be a great joke to burst on stage during rehearsal wearing nothing but a smile followed by a theatrical worried look.

I know this because AFR’s book relates the story and gives an intimate insight into the people we all think we know well — Wil-

liams and many others. It contains a lot of information about the theatre, movies, the “stars” of yesteryear, and much, much more.

You see, AFR was one of them — a flickering star of screen and stage. He’s a friend of mine. He’s a neighbour.

Would you believe he was in with a fighting chance of being James Bond after Sean Connery had made “Bond, James Bond” a household name? No kidding.

But Connery is not the only “name” he associates with. Try Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud, Penelope Keith, Patrick Cargill, Lauren Bacall, Charlton Heston, Deborah Kerr, Pe-ter O’Toole, Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, Sarah Miles, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Lemon, Maggie Smith, Dudley Moore — the list just goes on and on.

AFR is a proud Pom and his wife Sheila (stage name) is a lapsed Welsh lady, struggling with being branded a Pom by colonials but proud to have such an Aussie-sounding name. More about this bonza little bewdy at another time.

AFR and Sheila, who now have some sort of fly-in-fly-out Aussie citizenship, have been permanently thrust upon us for the past 18 months by COVID-19 — one of the few corona-virus blessings.

But they are, at times, a strange couple. They spent last Christmas at Uluru. I know some First Nations people who would not go anywhere near that burning mound of rock in the middle of summer.

Talk about mad dogs and Englishmen.

While AFR was almost famous as an actor, he is a very accomplished writer having churned out numerous books.

But his real claim to fame is his success as a playwright. Heard of The Mating Game? That’s one of his. His plays were seen all around the world until COVID hit and stage lights went out.

Almost Famous is very entertaining reading.

FOOTNOTE: If I know someone who is almost famous, am I sort of, maybe, almost close to being almost famous? No? I didn’t think so.

THIS week we are going to talk about mentors in your work life.

Now these mentors can be official or unofficial, and they contribute to your knowledge and add undeniable value to your professional life.

Of course, these mentors can also be on a personal level, but that conversation can be left for another day.

Before I started my business, I had many coffee catch ups (and I stress “many’ )with some very smart people who were successful in their own right. They were kind enough to offer me guidance then and continue to do so along my business journey.

I had been a Branch Manager for 15 years in an established organisation. I had never started a business before, and I definitely didn’t need to put the ba-

sic foundations in place as they were already there. I had whole divisions to support me and set me up for success. Starting a business was new territory to me, and my mentor’s advice guided me and helped me set up these foundations. They were open, honest, and knowledgeable, and were kind enough to share their time.

I started my business in late 2019 (yep, that’s right, just before COVID hit our lives) and this meant the permanent recruitment side of my business could continue to operate but it was difficult to develop the HR services.

This is where we go into a business and support their HR needs and we had to be careful with contact in 2020. So, needless to say, this year I decided this that I had to get better with branding, so the businesses were aware of our support service.

Now, sales and branding have never been my gift (although I have managed people in my teams who excelled at it) so I decided I needed a sales mentor.

One of the first people I spoke to when I was thinking about starting my own business had local, regional, and national branding and sales experience. He is brilliant at that stuff (you know who you are).

By now I am sure you know where I am going with this, and you would be correct - I asked him for a coffee. To cut a long story short, I asked him if he would consider being my mentor and his response: “I would be honoured” (his words not mine).

Great leaders enjoy supporting others, you just need to ask.

As I have said for many years, if you want to be successful at something, ask someone who already has been, for a coffee.

Don’t be afraid and don’t forget to shout.

RESPONSIBILITY: Don’t seek position and fame. Live your life with integrity as a man.

Responsibility and Reward LAST week we looked at a definition of manhood as proposed by Dr Robert Lewis in his book, “Raising a Modern Day Knight”.

The definition contained four main ideals, Reject Passivity, Lead Courageously, Accept Responsibility and Expect the Greater Reward. We looked briefly at Rejecting Passivity and Leading Courageously.

This week let’s examine Accepting Responsibility and Expecting the Greater Reward.

Accepting Responsibility is something that does not come naturally to us. Whenever we do something wrong our natural reaction is to look for a way out so that we escape punishment.

A good example is when pulled over by the Police for a traffic infringement, our first reaction often is to come up with an excuse for the infringement. It must be interesting to be a Police Officer and hear some of the excuses that come out of some mouths.

But accepting responsibility goes right to the heart of our integrity. Integrity is one of those few things that we actually own and only we can give away. Unfortunately, it is often traded for very short term gain through a lie, only to be found out some time later, once lost, it is very hard to regain.

What exactly is domestic violence?

WHEN you hear the words “Domestic violence” what do you think it means? It’s a great question and not as easy to answer as you may think, because you can be living in an abusive relationship and not even realise it, like I was for many years.

Too many years in fact.

I look back now and can see how ironic it was that I rescued a young woman because she was being abused by her boyfriend at the time and I was actually living in an abusive marriage. I recall being mortified and getting emotional when she showed me the bruises on her body. So much so that I wouldn’t let her go back home to him and instead moved her in with my then abuser and two small children immediately.

Being born into a world where I saw my

father get physically violent with my mother and in a world where those who should have protected me, but instead harmed me in many ways, led me to form unhealthy relationships. From early on into my adulthood, I had a warped sense of what love meant.

My first abusive relationship was physically abusive and very violent at times, so there was no mistake in my mind what was happening to me and hence why I got out relatively quickly from that one, compared to abusive relationship number two.

That one was the sneaky one, the one whose abuse slowly chipped away at my self worth and confidence, until I became a shell of a person who was unable to function as a human being should be able to function.

That relationship very nearly killed me and if I had of stayed there for much longer, I am certain that my life would have ended differently.

The thing about coercive control, which

is a term now used to describe people like my number-two abuser, is that it’s a like a very slow and painful way of being tortured, but you don’t realise it until you have escaped and for some victims, they don’t survive.

In the beginning the biggest red flag would have been the jealousy that he displayed to the point where he would abuse any man who dared to look at me and scold me if I dared to call him out for his behaviour. But he had a way of turning it around into his way of showing me how much he loved me. Or the way that he would control where I went and with who and somehow would turn it around to make out that it was because he cared about my wellbeing.

The reality was that he just wanted me all to himself and enjoyed the control that he had over me. He was so possessive that my mother noticed and one day

A real man accepts responsibility for his actions and doesn’t walk away or hide when the going gets tough, regardless of the penalty.

The man who stands up gains respect, which brings us to the fourth ideal, Expecting the Greater Reward.

In our society success is often measured in terms of material wealth, prestige of position and fame. These things are promoted as must haves to be successful.

However, these things are not the greatest reward. For example working to gain wealth, how much is enough?

What gets neglected along the way?

Striving for position and fame is exhausting and lasts only as long as the mask doesn’t drop. It also brings with it several downsides, eg. lack of privacy, scrutiny of every aspect of your ‘perfect’ life.

The greater reward comes with living by the first three ideals of Rejecting Passivity, Leading Courageously and Accepting Responsibility.

If you do these things in your day to day life, you gain honour, respect and dignity in your family and community; this is the Greater Reward.

Maintaining your integrity and being known as a man of honour will bring its own reward as people put their trust in you and your dealings with them.

If in business, these qualities will bring their own reward as your reputation grows. The quest for wealth, position and power is temporary whereas the Greater Reward is eternal.

Worse was the day that he pointed directly at me at my friend’s place over lunch saying “you wouldn’t think that she used to be a model” because I had put on weight.

Put on weight!! I put on weight because of him and was on many types of medication at one point. This caused me to gain weight, just to be able to cope with the anxiety that I had every single day because I was constantly walking on eggshells around him.

When I did get intoxicated he used to say to me “you’re escaping reality”. I remember thinking to myself and probably blurted the words out to him on occasion, that I was escaping reality alright, I was escaping him.

Reflecting on how he treated me, it’s easy to see that he was nothing but an abusive bully who had instilled fear in me

from very early on into our relationship by saying to me that if I ever left him and got with another man that he would hunt us down and kill us both.

He sure as hell didn’t deserve to have me as his wife for all of those years. But it’s well over now and I have a husband who adores me and I have two amazing sons which make every single thing that I went through with him worth it. Instead of him breaking me like he almost did, I healed and now use my experiences as a way to help others break the cycles of domestic violence.

Domestic and family violence comes in many forms and doesn’t mean that you have to have to be hit or walk around sporting a black eye to be a victim of abuse. It affects people from all walks of life and if you don’t make the choice to break your cycle of domestic and family violence, the wheel will continue to spin through the next generation and so on. Glimpse of exciting robotics future YEAR NINE students from Central Highlands schools were given a glimpse into exciting new career pathways at workshops with resources sector professionals.

At ‘Beakers.Bots.Build’, more than 50 students from throughout the region spent the day with industry mentors, immersed in hands-on activities in robotics and programming, chemical processing, and engineering and design.

The workshop, attended by 50 students, was delivered by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA), supported by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA).

QMEA’s Manager of Skills and Education, Matthew Heskett said that the workshop was designed to give young people valuable insight into the realities of working in the sector now and into the future.

“Thanks to rapidly advancing technology, there are really rewarding opportunities available to young people entering the resources sector,” he said.

“School students in Blackwater and Emerald are familiar with the mining industry and may have family members already working in it. This workshop showed them exciting new STEM-related careers in coding, programming, chemical processing, and engineering and design.”

BMA Asset President James Palmer said the BMA representatives relished the opportunity to showcase the cutting-edge work they are doing in the resources sector.

“Students are thrilled when they are given a chance to apply what they are learning in STEM at school in a real-world context. Workshops like this one encourage strong teamwork and communication – and have the power to shift their perspectives on what a career in mining and resources looks like,” he said.

Bringing back hope and positivity

WHAT makes a person a hero? Is it the cape? is it the powers?

We believe it could be the power to listen and to be a friend. Something as simple as that can save a life.

Jacob Cumner caught up with Barb Hill who does tremendous work for the people of Mackay through a number of groups which offer support with those who need it in the community.

She also runs Barb Hill Coaching & Mentoring Age:42 Occupation: Life Coach and Support Worker, Mental Wellness advocate, Volunteer in a number of committees related to Mental Health and Suicide Prevention JC : What is the most important thing to you about your work?

BH: I have a number of job roles that all intertwine.

In my support work role I am a strong advocate for encouraging independence and versatility, highlighting and working with my clients’ strengths, passions and aiming high for goals.

In my coaching role is similar although in different contexts. I work with various people from various backgrounds (men or women) and have coached single parents, young

adults, addicts, business managers and even a member of parliament.

Using the various “tools” I have including NLP, Epigenetics, Energy work, Hypnotherapy and Timeline therapy I design each client session individually, dependent on what their needs and goals are.

I love that coaching is different from psychology...My aim when working with someone is taking them from where they are to where they want to be...But ultimately it’s up to them on how fast they get there. Everyone is capable of greatness and I take my role seriously when I am assisting people to uncover it within themselves.

The most important thing to me about my work is seeing people rise from Victim to Victor, From Tragedy to Triumph.

We all have a story, and a past and that does not define us or who we are. Comeback stories are extremely powerful

fed up with where they are in life and wanting more.

They often have had quite a challenging story which led them to where they were before connecting with me. Some have been stuck in a rut and feeling lost in the mental health system and feel they have tried everything else.

Coaching can be tough, can be challenging and triggering however growth comes from pushing into the edges and owning your power, taking responsibility and moving forward…although with the techniques I use, I don’t keep people stuck in their trauma or their story.

They don’t need to share a great lot at all in fact. These people have often told their story so often that it is keeping them stuck in the past and in their trauma. I love when I see “the shift” in people when we work through that and release it. My passion is particularly assisting people own their power in whatever form it may take…As personal power, once it is ignited reflects in business aswell as relationships. A happy manager equals happy staff equals happy business!

BH: I am a mum to four awesome teenagers and also an angel baby mum. My daughter passed away in 2005 to SIDS. I am usually not far from a beach even when working. I love helping other people in professional and personal life.

I am known in my coaching network as “Aunty Barb” and known

CARING: Barb lifts other people up. by most for my love for hugs. I love to laugh and be out doing anything fun. It lights me up volunteering in various capacities. I love to sing. I am not going to be hitting a stage anytime soon but my audience is usually my support clients riding in “the red rocket” and we usually end up doing duets in the car while on the way to a beach or park.

Life hasn’t always gone to plan…I have my own path I have journeyed down, that’s why I am so passionate about what I do and why I do it. I have struggled with mental health battles and addictions and been given various “labels” in the past, have been down in the pit of darkness where I felt that everyone

was better off without me and that suicide was the only answer.

Not that long ago I struggled with not being able to speak properly and developed a stutter … my kids even called me “The rapper”, now I don’t stop talking! I was in the mental health system for a while and also had support workers.

I am living proof that what I do with my coaching clients works….

This is what I did to get well again.

I have been a co-author of two collaborative books which were released last year, sharing my story in those. I am very open about my journey as it shows others who may be struggling that they can rise and come through strong. You are

JC: Why did you get into this line of work?

BH: As I previously touched on, I had my own journey into the darkness after losing my daughter in 2005. I had other life challenges throughout my life but after losing Charli it was a slow downhill spiral, after that which actually took a number of years for me to spiral out of control and hit rock bottom.

Which then became a blessing as I got the help I needed and set me on the path to wanting to “give back” and ultimately learning the processes which gave me my life back. I am strong mental wellness advocate, and the mental health system is amazing but it can only provide so much help.

Coaching for me was where the real transformation happened. I became medication free and the happiest I have ever been. I am living my life how I wish it to be. It is always a work in progress though and challenges still do pop up from time to time. There is no such thing as being fully recovered…I am human as much as anyone else, however I know the tools to help myself and recognise when I need to go “refill my own cup”.

Get tickets to see half-shell green heroes

Visitors to the famous Mon Repos turtle-education and conservation centre will soon be able to book tickets to get up close to the ocean’s ‘heroes in a half shell’.

Following the announcement earlier this year of 446 new solar panels to power the popular tourism destination, supporting 14 jobs as part of Queensland’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan, Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said tickets for the popular nightly Mon Repos Turtle Encounter went on sale from 10am oyesterday.

“The Mon Repos Turtle Encounter is the only rang-

Those planning on heading to Mon Repos over Summer are encouraged to book early with ticket numbers limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“If you miss out on tickets to the nightly Turtle Encounters, visitors can plan a day visit to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre which has been fully redeveloped to provide an immersive and interactive turtle experience.”

Bundaberg MP Tom Smith said the centre is one of the best nature-based tourism experiences in Queensland.

“The nightly encounter is a vitally important oppor-

er-guided turtle encounter on the east coast and is a turtle-y amazing way to see these majestic animals up close,” Minister Scanlon said.

“Mon Repos is home to the largest population of nesting marine loggerhead turtles in the South Pacific and is critical to the survival of the endangered species.

“Hundreds of loggerheads return to Mon Repos to lay their eggs every year.

“The tours are enormously popular with over 12,000 visitors participating in the nightly Turtle Encounter.

“We’ve purchased an additional 42 hectares of land to double the size of this important conservation area, and

tunity for rangers and our volunteers to educate visitors about the importance of our conservation efforts and how we can all contribute to the survival of the species,” Mr Smith said.

“Last year around 365 loggerheads, nine flatbacks and one green turtle visited the Wongarra Coast during the turtle season.

“Approximately 150,000 eggs were laid last season and we saw a successful hatchling rate of around 80 percent, which was an improvement on the last four turtle hatching seasons.”

The Mon Repos Turtle Encounter tours run seven nights-a-week throughout turtle season which runs from early November to late March. Bookings can be made online through at Bundaberg Region Tourism.

ACCESSING fresh seasonal produce every week is what Farmers Markets are all about.

Creating new recipes based on seasonal produce has always been a joy for me. After selecting my produce, I immediately find myself thinking about the myriad of options to best put it to use.

This week I decided to create something to take along to our GWFN meeting. Made only from market produce, my two dips, Sweet Potato and Beetroot, were extremely popular and it

only reinforced to me how simple it is to create deliciousness when you start with items that are fresh, local and grown with love.

For the Sweet Potato dip, I slow-roasted cubes of Sweet Potato and Garlic then blended those with cream cheese, lemon juice and seasoning.

My Beetroot Dip was also simple to make. Slow roast the Beetroot and garlic then blend with a drained can of cannellini beans. Great for gut health!

With Father’s Day happening this weekend, I decided to catch up with the Emma from Shore

HARVEST: Ex-servicemen and women will be helping farmers get their crops off this season.

Veterans mobilised through grain FORMER Australian servicemen and women have swapped tanks for tractors - in a bid to relieve pressure on Queensland farmers crippled by COVID-19 workforce shortages.

Operation Grain Harvest Assist launched nationwide today (Thursday 26 August 2021), and will see Aussie veterans stationed on grain farms throughout the state - bolstering the supply of local workers to help with this year’s bumper grains harvest.

With increased workforce shortages limiting many parts of Australia’s grains supply chain, the initiative (a joint collaboration between AgForce, WA Farmers, ex Australian Defence Force servicemen and women, and Grains Producers Australia) will recruit willing workers with the transferable skills needed to operate heavy machinery and carry out other harvesting jobs.

AgForce Grains Board President Brendan Taylor

said the operation was much needed in Queensland, and thanked veterans for putting their shoulders to the wheel during tough times.

“The second consecutive year of this global COVID pandemic is presenting many complex challenges to manage for grain producers, especially securing enough workers to harvest and optimise the value of what’s forecast to be a $15 billion grains crop,” he said.

“It really helps to ease the burden when ex-defence force

personnel reach out like this, and their help is very much appreciated.”

Retired Royal Australian Armoured Corps Lieutenant Colonel Garry Spencer AM said the initiative was a “win win” for everyone involved.

“We know COVID-19 has greatly reduced the supply of grain harvest workers from overseas, with more than 100,000 fewer backpackers available this year, compared to 2020,” he said.

“That’s why we put our heads together with grains industry leaders and devised a plan of attack that’ll help not only farmers, but also benefit our people by giving them the option to get out and work on farms, thus creating a sense of satisfaction and valuable income at this vital time.

“Driving a tank or piloting aircraft in a military manoeuvre is surely a great segue to working on farms and using heavy machinery such as harvesters with auto-steer, GPS

guidance and air-conditioning.”

Mr Spencer said the priority was to ensure the “troops” received proper support, guidance and advice, through volunteer co-ordinators available throughout the operation.

Two Facebook pages will link workers to harvest jobs – one for farms in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, and the other for WA and SA. He said this would ensure proactive management

of key issues such as labour agreements, employment conditions, training programs, accommodation arrangements, and travel eligibility (as essential workers under COVID-19 rules) in different jurisdictions.

Mr Taylor said Operation Grain Harvest Assist complemented other strategic policy initiatives pursued by AgForce to help battle serious labour shortages and deliver short and long-term outcomes.

Ag visa welcome news but timing is tight GRAINGROWERS has welcomes the recent announcement by the Federal Government to deliver a dedicated agriculture specific visa (Ag Visa) although with headers expected to start rolling at the end of September, timing will be tight.

While the Ag Visa as announced by Minister Littleproud will widen the recruitment opportunities for an uncapped number of low to highly skilled workers from ASEAN countries operational from 30 September 21, northern hemisphere countries are critical for the grains industry.

“In GrainGrowers’ recent policy survey, growers across Australia told us that labour and skills short-

ages are one of their biggest challenges and an issue for their enterprise,” said Brett Hosking, GrainGrowers Chair.

“For growers, an Ag Visa needs to be accessible to those who are qualified and have experience in grains-related jobs. The Visa announced today is great news and we thank Minister Littleproud for his commitment to agriculture and hope to see it broaden to other eligible countries where our grains workforce traditionally come from, like those in the Northern Hemisphere.”

Agriculture has a goal of reaching $100 billion per annum by 2030 but to do so, it needs the workforce.

Novel new variety lends to future farming THE Burdekin Regional Variety Committee (RVC) met earlier this year to consider the commercial merit of the most advanced experimental clones in the Sugar Research Australia (SRA) breeding program and approved the release of SRA32.

Mr Rob Milla, Chair of the RVC and Manager of Burdekin Productivity Services (BPS), explained that the committee includes technical expertise across local production, agronomy, pathology, plant breeding and milling.

“The RVC is recognised under the Queensland Biosecurity Act with responsibility for minimum disease standards and is tasked with making release deci-

sions on new varieties that improve whole-of-industry profitability,” said Mr Milla.

Dr Xianming Wei is SRA’s Variety Development Manager responsible for Burdekin plant breeding, which is expanding this year with 33,000 potential new varieties going into field trials at the SRA Brandon research station. These potential new varieties then progress to Final Assessment Trials (FATs) conducted under commercial agronomic management conditions on farms across the Burdekin. A range of specialist tests are also completed to determine the disease resistance profile, sugar quality, and fibre quality of advanced clones.

HEAVY DUTY: Watch out for farm machinery on t he roads during the crushing season.

CANEGROWERS Mackay CEO, Kerry Latter, Communications Manager, Chris Walker, and I recently had a meeting with the road safety personnel at the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

We hope to be able to put together a road safety campaign this month for social media which aims to raise driver awareness of

the large size and slow speed of our farm machinery on the roads during the crushing season.

Drivers who are travelling on the highway at 100 km/hr seem unable to comprehend that the large farm machinery on the road in front of them is travelling at only 40 km/hr (the legal speed) and that the vehicle they are fast approaching is nearly the length, size and weight of a road train!

Drivers who take last minute action and veer over to the other side of the road in order to pass the machinery (which they quickly discover is much longer than they expected) are putting themselves and oncoming traffic in grave danger. Even more disconcerting are those drivers who don’t

realise the need to slow their vehicles until it is almost too late. (This is a story which I am sure road workers are also familiar with.)

It seems drivers become complacent with flashing lights, pilot vehicles and signs.

Worse, they become abusive and get between a pilot vehicle and the vehicle it is guiding in order to try to overtake it.

Inclement weather conditions, particularly as we get closer to the wet season, when visibility is poor, make matters worse, of course. As does the need for harvest operators to drive early in the day or late at night (large contract harvest operators typically start work at 3.30 am) in order to try to miss the traffic.

CENTRAL Queensland is home to a diverse range of food from beef and seafood to sugar cane and mangos.

However, the agricultural economy relies heavily on science and innovation to support growth and sustainability.

As part of National Science Week, CQUniversity’s CQ Festival of Food showcased the scientific processes involved in the production of food through a series of engaging experiments for primary school students.

CQUniversity Senior Lecturer, Australia Pacific LNG STEM Central Lead Dr Linda Pfeiffer collaborated with industry experts to develop relevant and engaging science experiments that provide students with a unique opportunity to explore the science behind food.

The series of experiments included four different themes: Cane Train (Mackay), Meet the Meat (Rockhamp-

ton), fishing industry (Gladstone) and Ag-Tech and dairy (Bundaberg).

Dr Pfeiffer said the themes chosen were significant to the agricultural and food technology industry in Central Queensland.

“It is important for students to understand the connection between science and food production and agriculture,” Dr Pfeiffer said.

“We developed these innovative programs to imprint skills of agricultural concepts and increase knowledge of tools and systems.”

Dr Pfeiffer and her team worked closely with Northview State School in Mackay, the Advanced Technology and Innovation Centre in Rockhampton, St Francis Catholic Primary School in Tannum Sands and Elliot Heads State School in Bundaberg to record demonstrations of the experiments for future use.

“Leading up to National

Science Week, we visited four schools and with their participation we recorded experiments which are available on our website, along with the downloadable resources for each experiment,” Dr Pfeiffer explained.

Experiment materials are available for teachers to borrow at Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg campuses until the end of the year.

CQUniversity’s CQ Festival of Food was awarded $16 800 in this year’s round of the National Science Week grants.

Dr Pfeifer said active participation by schools will cement the long-term sustainability of the program.

This occurs as teachers gain knowledge and develop their skills on the scientific experiment process and implement these experiments in the classroom now and into the future.

This is a terrible situation when the growers are only doing their daily work in order to harvest their cane for sugar - which is bringing in valuable export income for Queensland.

The problem is common not only on our local roads and highways but throughout the State's cane growing areas during the harvest season (June – December).

To show drivers what they must pay at-

tention to at this time of year on the roads we hope to put together footage of large farm machinery turning onto the roads from farms and loco sidings - and in particular any footage we can find.

And, to all of the pops, granddads, step-dads, mums-who-aredads, foster dads, single dads and dad figures – you all ought to take a bow as well!

Sunday is your day – as it should be. Father’s Day originated in Spokane, Washington in the United States in 1910.

It was a day brought about by a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd to honour her own dad, William Jackson Smart, who was a veteran of the American Civil War and raised on his own his six kids.

The day first emerged in Australia in September 1936, in an article published in the Newcastle Sun. The article advocated for the day to become as “popular as Mother’s Day” – and the rest, as they say, is history.

Almost 90 years on and the

day has etched for itself a special place on our calendar. And don’t the people of our region know it.

When Mackay Local News reporter Jacob Cumner took to the streets to ask our community what their dads mean to them, he was touched by the love that’s out there!

For every single person who we have spoken to, there is one recurring theme: The time and fun we have had with our dads is what counts most!

We know camping and fishing are a big deal in our region, and by the comments from our readers, it seems Dads are leading the charge!

Then, there are the days and weeks, and hours and hours devoted by our dads to sport, dancing, art classes, singing lessons, go-kart racings, water skiing, wake boarding, bush walking,

mountain biking, swimming … you name it and the dads are there, front and centre, doing their bit – and then some!

Let’s not forget, too, the blokes who are not dads, but are incredible role models in life.

They’re the men who man up and whether they are filling the gap left by an absent dad, or

showing the importance of teamwork by working with other dads to make things happen for our kids.

Like any of these days of significance on our calendar, Father’s Day is not just a day for celebrating the great, but allowing those who don’t have that – for whatever reason - to reflect

and look at (or for) the silver linings.

Perhaps this is your first Father’s Day as a Dad, or Grandad or maybe even as a stepdad. Perhaps it is your first without your Dad. Of maybe it’s a day where the absence of a Dad weighs heavier than other days.

Whatever it is to you, take the time to reflect. There are plenty who will impose upon you the commercialism and plead with you to part with your coins to show how grateful you are.

But when it comes down to it, and as you can see by the comments here, Father’s Day isn’t about things.

It’s about time. It’s about thanks. It’s about memories made now to drawn upon on Father’s Days in future.

Happy Father’s Day to you all.

PEST: The tilapia has been likened to the cane toad.

Time to take tilapia to task Mackay anglers, it’s time to break out the tackle for a takedown of the fishy equivalent of the cane toad: the pest fish tilapia.

Reef Catchments will once again host the Tilapia Takedown at the Gooseponds, North Mackay, on Saturday, September 4. Keen fishers will gather at John Breen Park for a fun family event featuring tilapia fishing, music, jumping castles, stalls, and, like any fishing comp worth its salt: some great prizes for the pest catches of the day ¬– including island trips!

Event organiser and Reef Catchments project officer Carlos Bueno promises a reel good time for all.

“It’s a great community day. We hope the weather will be cracking, and we can get out, have fun fishing and learn something about the environment,” he said.

“Tilapia are a big issue. This event will help the community learn more about what they can do to

protect our waterways from invasive species and stop the spread of pest fish. Our native fish are already under enough pressure, with some 4000 barriers in the Mackay- Whitsunday-Isaac’s waterways, so anything we can do to help our native fish out, the better!”

When it comes to our region’s waterways, tilapia mean trouble, competing with some of our favourite species, like barra, for food and space. First detected in the Gooseponds in 2014, the 40cm Mozambique tilapia can thrive and survive in a wide range of aquatic habitats, living and breeding for up to 13 years. Because the exotic aquarium escapee is a restricted invasive fish under biosecurity regulations, there are guidelines to fishing and disposal of the species, which will all be demonstrated at Tilapia Takedown.

“The fish is a known problem in the Gooseponds. We aren’t going to eradicate this fish on this one day: but we can help control it, and we

can raise awareness of what you can and can’t do with tilapia,” Mr Bueno said.

“Even just knowing how to dispose of them properly will help: you can’t put them back in the water because they are mouth-brooders – they hold their young in their mouth.”

This project is jointly funded through Reef Catchments, the Australian Government’s Reef Trust, and Red Hot Couriers.

Saucer scallops ban LOCAL trawl fishers will no longer be able to retain saucer scallops when fishing in waters in the central and southern part of the Queensland coast.

This is to address an ongoing decline in stocks.

Deputy Director-General Fisheries Queensland Graeme Bolton said a decision to protect scallop stocks followed the latest scientific data.

“The 2021 stock assessment for saucer scallops in Queensland estimates a spawning biomass of 12 per cent of the unfished biomass in 2020, a decrease from the 2019 estimate of 17 per cent,” Mr Bolton said.

“A limit of 20 per cent of the unfished biomass is the national standard for ceasing fishing effort or harvest until the stock is rebuilt to a sustainable level.”

Mr Bolton said Fisheries Queensland has been working

closely with all stakeholders to seek feedback on management options for the scallop fishery, before finalising a decision.

“From this coming season, scallops in the Central Trawl region and Southern Inshore Trawl region will be no-take until a minimum of 30% biomass level is reached,” he said.

“Importantly for industry, fishing for other species, such as prawns and Moreton Bay bugs, will be allowed to continue in all regions under the existing regulations and scallop will still be able to be retained in the Southern Offshore Trawl region, but for a shorter fishing season.”

Mr Bolton commended all stakeholders for their cooperation and previous efforts to try to turn scallop stock numbers around.

“This decision is unlikely to be a surprise to scallop fishers. We have seen this fishery decrease in value from approximately $16 million per

year in the 1990s, to less than $1.8 million in 2019,” he said.

“Unfortunately, management action in recent years has not resulted in the rebuilding of the scallop population that we had hoped for.

“If we don’t take strong action now, there will be no scallop fishery into the future and we will likely lose Commonwealth export approvals for the trawl fishery valued at approximately $180 million per year.

“Fisheries Queensland will work with key stakeholders to review the Southern Inshore and Central Trawl harvest strategies to provide for the long-term rebuilding of scallops and to determine agreed conditions for the reopening of fishing for scallops.”

“Any changes to the harvest strategies will be subject to further public and industry consultation.”

True Street Cars charity cruise a huge success THE team at True Street Cars CQ Mackay hosted a Cruise for Charity show n shine recently to help raise funds for the Mackay hospital foundation (children’s ward).

It was an absolute cracker of a day for the Mackay car community.

What started as a small idea to get some people on a cruise soon snowballed into what would become a mindblowing event that the crew decided to put towards a good cause.

So they created the SUNDAZED Cruise for charity show n shine event which ended up seeing over 220 vehicles through the gates of the Sarina Showgrounds to park up and show off theif pride and joys.

With around 180 cars and bikes attending the 43km cruise from the

Mackay Amphitheatre botanical gardens, utilising the new ring road out to Sarina showgrounds, around 1000 people went through the gates to chave a look and support the day.

It went off with out a hitch and the organisers were very happy with everyone’s behaviour and safety. There was plenty of kids entertainment with big jumping castles, a merry go round, spinning teacups, face painting, and even balloon art, which ensured the kids had an absolute ball.

True Street Cars CQ said they would like to thank all of the sponsors that jumped on board to help them.

“We truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts to help put this great event together. Without you it just wouldn’t happen.

“To all of our volunteers you deserve a big pat on the back and also to all of our entrants it wouldn’t be an event without you guys.

“And everyone should be super proud that they have helped donate to the local children’s ward at the hospital to help in more ways then they know.

REVVED: The North Queensland Motorcross Junior Chmpionships were held in Mackay.

THE Mens Club Championship Triples were played over the weekend at Proserpine Bowls. The team of Phil Brown (subbing for Dale Haack), Luke Kinnear and Wayne Handley were victorious defeating Martin Corr, Shane Kinnear and Michael Kinnear 23 to 17 in the final.

This was a great match with neither side giving an inch.

They will now go on to represent the club at the upcoming Champions of Champions to be played at Sarina on the 11th September. In the earlier matches, Handley’s team was very lucky against the team of Peter Lawton, Barry Zillmann and Ross Reville, getting out of jail in winning 26 to 17 after trailing 17 to 6 early in the match. In other matches, Paul Alcock, Luchie Gardel (and Andrew Bell defeated Angus Craig, Marcus Craig and Toby Craig; Gavin Noonan, Todd Leys and Scott Kinnear defeated Jim Quod, Nathan Dodds and Jonathan Bye.

In the nett competition Danny York, 208 edged out Mark Rasmussen with 209, while in the B grade the winner was Vic Feldman 206 from Ritchie Aitkens 217.

Champ is back

MACKAY Table Tennis welcomed back a former champion at its Tuesday morning fixtures this week.

Pam Keune, pictured in action, was the 1964 women’s champion when the association played at the Church of England hall in Shakespeare Street.

The Bridge Road centre opened in 1971 and although Pam has lived in Mackay all her life, she had never before played in the ‘new’ venue.

Welcome back to the club, Pam! There’s always lots of action and heaps of fun at

Tuesday morning Mackay table tennis fixtures. If you’re aged 8 to 80 and

WITH Jamie Woods wrapping up the Airlie Darts league last week, there was still a lot to play for.

Fourth place was still up for grabs and a battle for eighth was on the board.

In the round, Aaron Paull (pictured) defeated Rooster Coutts 6/3, ending his chances of finishing fourth, but Rooster will still be playing finals after a great season. Aaron hit a lovely 180 in that match.

Both Jamie Maher and Andy Peel had wins over Seumas Rose and Garry Robbie 6/1 and 6/2 respectively. Jamie remaining in fourth for now thanks to better leg difference over Andy in fifth.

Gene Birse in second and Joe Wilson in third played

out a 6/5 tension-filled match which, as it stands, will be the first match up come round one of finals.

Finally, Jason Rockstroh keeps his impressive run going with a 6/0 win over Dick O’Hara. Jason finding form at the right time it would seem.

Flanagan gives best

SARINA bowler Jan Flanagan was unstoppable, playing her best bowls to defeat Leanne McGeough 111-79 in the club’s ladies consistency final.

The final of the men’s three-bowl triples resulted in a close and exciting finish.

Tom Pietzner, Ian Henshaw and Ian Gardner held on to defeat Ian Foot, Doug Gidding and Trevor Bird 19-17.

Run, socialise for Father’s Day THIS weekend, the Mackay Road Runners will have Father’s Day off.

Instead, the club will be supporting the abundance of park runners at their weekly Saturday morning 5km event from the Botanic Gardens, Lagoon Street playground, West Mackay.

All runners, walkers and supporters are most welcome to volunteer or participate on the morning with a like-minded crew who love to socialise whilst exercising.

Over the weekend, around forty runners took part in the Mackay Road Runners Trail running series event from Lamberts Beach Esplanade.

The spectacular sunny day was cool and breezy at the start, however the heat turned up literally for all runners as they progressed through their respective races.

The 7am start through the undulating soft sandy trails was described as “very challenging”, with the sun beating down throughout most of the race, although some forest coverage provided welcome relief from the humid conditions.

Shuttlewood organised a very well marked trail running route.

Runners had the option of one or three loops for the senior race and a one-kilometre distance for the junior Little Lost Bunyips. The testing event did allow for commonsense to prevail if participants needed to alter their distance in the steamy atmosphere.

There was excellent running by Paul McKenzie who comfortably sat in third for the first of the three loop 13 kilometre event. This was prior to storming home with a clear lead from talented trail running athletes Leon Ryan, Matt Graves, Tim Caddy, Gavan Porter and Andrew Short.

The female contingent also had a excellent outing ,with Glynis Forse forging ahead in the first loop to hang on for first place ahead of Ainslie Heinke, Heli Talinurm, Vicki Vickers and Jose Short.

Solid performances also came from Andrew Wallace, Simon Henderson, David Isbister, Merv Shields, Ross Connor, Carmel Mahon, June Bradley, Jaylene Harrison, Leanne Connor, Jo Hughes, Emma Johnson, Jo Ashford, Peter Ellison, Tim Magoffin, John Couldrey and Derek Woods.

Trashy questions take their mental toll and their credentials revoked for the remainder of the tournament.

There has to come a point in time where the federations/companies running the events grow a backbone and stamp out this ‘ambulance chasing’ type of reporting. Not only is it damaging to the mental well-being of the athletes, but they’re not actually doing their job of reporting on the game.

I don’t give two tosses about an athlete’s skin colour, I want to know the facts of the match; the score, the turning point, the conditions and how it may have affected the game.

Gregory Skye on Sport INCREASINGLY we’re hearing about mental health in sport, specifically from the athletes themselves.

Firstly, I want to point out that I am not trained in mental health and therefore I won’t touch on the issue itself, but I do want to chat about a catalyst that seems to be a recurring theme from athletes…the media.

When I first read about Naomi Osaka’s mental health issues, specifically with the media, at this year’s French Open, I found myself thinking “she needs to be tougher”.

But I’ve also seen some atrocious “reporting” (and I use that word loosely) which aims at achieving nothing but a trashy, sensationalised story that has nothing to do with the game.

Elite athletes know what they’re getting into when they reach that level and they know there are media obligations and they even receive specific training in how to conduct media interviews.

Tough Situation It’s a tough give and take situation, the media needs the athletes in order to write their stories, but likewise, the athletes need the media because they’re the ones paying the big bucks to broadcast / promote the sport. But… here’s where I start to question the ethics of the media.

Firstly, I want to point out that there are some extremely ethical journalists out there who continue to report the facts. However, there seems to be a new wave of trashy journalists who

BLACK? The US Open media conference. seem to attend press conferences and/ or write their stories with the sole aim of gaining a reaction and usually a controversial one.

We’ve probably all seen some of these press conferences, because they’re the ones that have gained a reaction by the athlete.

Yet it’s the reaction of the athlete that’s the headline, not the fact that the reporter stepped over the line. Coco Gauff (17 year old US Female Tennis Player ranked 23 in the world) was asked at her Press Conference at this year’s French Open: “You are often compared to the Williams sisters. Maybe it’s because you’re black?”

This one idiotic question proved Naomi’s point… post-match press conferences on the whole have become nothing short of a series of moronic questions usually having nothing to do with the match just played. So why are the athletes held to such a high standard in terms of their commitment to the media, yet the media themselves are not held accountable?

If the media continue to send journalists to ask questions purely based on gaining an adverse reaction, irrespective of the athlete’s mental well-being, why don’t the sporting federations and their communications team start sanctioning the journos?

I know you can’t sanction reporters for their lack of integrity (if you Google “Stupid Sporting Questions at Press Conferences” – it’ll blow your mind that these people are paid professionals). Perhaps if a reporter asks a blatantly offensive question, they could be removed from the press conference

Wayne Bennett Method The alternative is, athletes adopt the Wayne Bennett method… attend the press conference with a physical look of disdain of the people sitting before you and answer yes / no / no comment to EVERY SINGLE QUESTION. I can assure you, most reporters head into a press conference with Wayne knowing they’ll get next to nothing out of him… so they don’t even bother with the stupid questions, on the whole… but there’s always one!!

If anything, I would hope that the media scrum head in there armed with some highly intelligent questions in the hope that Wayne will be surprised and impressed enough with the quality of journalism that he’ll actually provide an in-depth response.

Ultimately, do our athletes need to get mentally tougher with the moronic and offensive questions thrown at them or do the media need to take a hard look at themselves and their ethics.

A bit of both perhaps. Athletes need to attend press conferences and partake in interviews as part of their job, because there are still some incredibly talented and ethical journalists out there who will do the right thing and write a story on the facts of the game.

Emotion-fueled All-Abilities game IT WAS the moment these athletes had waited for: A rematch between the Mackay Cutters and Townsville Blackhawks All-Abilities teams.

It didn’t fail to impress.

The Mackay All Abilities Cutters took to the field to face off against the All-Abilities Townsville Black Hawks on Saturday, and the excitement as they took to the field was palpable.

Both teams were pumped to head out of the tunnel and get out on the field while those in the grandstand cheered them on.

It was the second match-up between the sides this year and it went

back and forth for a while with the All-Abilities Mackay Cutters coming out on top again by a significant margin.

But win or lose both sides performed their absolute best and gave it their all.

The pride and joy for these young players was rewarded with a season medal and Cowboys bucket hat. The emotion was overwhelming for some, and it was a special moment at the game’s full-time siren.

Organisers of the event said hopes were high that next season there would be more All-Abilities teams take to the field throughout Queensland.

This is my first year with the Club. I play U14s b and U16 c.

What’s your favourite thing about netball?

I love how competitive it is and how everyone gets along and works together.

Teamwork.

Centre, because you do a lot of running and it’s just really competitive.

I have been playing for three years I play 14 c and 16 b.

What’s your favourite thing about the sport?

I think it’s just the companionship with everyone you all have something in common, and we all really like netball.

What’s the most important thing?

Its definitely teamwork. You can’t do anything without teamwork.

What is your favourite position to play?

Goal attack. I’m a little bit short for a shooter so it really pushes and makes me think about my play.

I have been playing a couple of years now.

What is your favourite position to play on the court?

GA because I do get to shoot a lot and I get to run around with my friends and all that.

What is the most important thing about netball?

Team work honestly you can meet a lot of people and friends.

What would you tell other kids to get them involved?

Honestly, it’s a really fun hobby to do for your self and others. You get to compete, have fun and do what you want.

Not to drop the ball.

Probably second row because you can smash them.
