THAT is the question as many as 700 people could be asking tonight.

And those 700 people are not just who you think they might be.

The face of homelessness is changing in the Mackay region and the scariest thing is that most people are just two pay slips away from finding themselves in the same situation. St Vincent de Paul Society Housing NQ Manager Raeleen Etelaaho said on

every given night in Mackay region, there were between 650 and 700 people - including whole families - who were either staying in charity-paid motel accommodation or they were sleeping rough.

CELEBRATION: The above photos show some of the activities at MacKillop’s 25th anniversary celebration

MacKillop celebrates Silver Jubilee ON SUNDAY the MacKillop Catholic Primary School community came together to celebrate 25 years of learning, faith, and friendship.

The school opened its doors in 1995, with foundation Principal Dr John Lyons, and today continues its traditions under the leadership of current Principal Mrs Allison Blakey.

With an enrolment of 183 students, MacKillop Catholic Primary School

prides itself on offering all the opportunities of a larger school, while maintaining a caring, personal approach that comes with being a small family-oriented, community school.

In recent years, the school has undergone significant refurbishments and now boasts a new administration area, under covered lunch area and canteen, library media room, new learning support room and outdoor learning space, new Prep and

OSHC room and outdoor Prep area as well as a new senior playground.

Whilst these new capital works were acknowledged at a formal Blessing and Opening Ceremony earlier in the week, Sunday’s celebrations, were not only a culmination of 25 Years of “Faith and Service”, but also an opportunity to host an Open Day and showcase to the wider community of Mackay just what this beautiful school has to offer.

While Bill’s Amusements provided rides for the children, Let’s Waffle and Coastal Coffee provided the sweet treats and ‘In the Booth’ ensured students both past and present were able to capture a moment in time!

There were market stalls, a cake and plant stall, memorabilia displays and an art show. Entertainment was provided

by Dance Express, the Holy Spirit Drum Corp, Musicorp teacher and past student

Homelessness a huge problem in region FROM PAGE ONE That’s only the tip of the iceberg, with these figures representing only those who can be “counted”, Ms Etelaaho said.

She said the numbers did not factor in the couch surfers, people staying with friends, those living out of a single room in someone else’s house or those in hostels or boarding houses, or having to find ad hoc accommodation night to night.

“You can go to just about every motel in the Mackay region, on any given night and you will find families there who have nowhere else to go,” Ms Etelaaho said.

If you think you know what the face of homelessness looks like in our region, think again.

Ms Etelaaho – who coordinates St Vincent de Paul’s housing across the greater Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and Tablelands regions – said the Mackay homelessness rate was about on par with the other regions, and was congruent with rates reported along the Queensland east coast.

She said people moving to the region, having heard of its low unemployment rate and still relatively low cost of accommodation (when compared to other regions), made up a considerable portion of those finding themselves without a place to stay.

“This is the highest level of migration from other regions – or other parts of the country – since 2018,” Ms Etelaaho said.

“They are coming here having not made any plans.

“I can see why they are seeing Mackay as attractive, but many known no one in Mackay, they think they will come and get a job and find a place to stay.”

With rental properties attracting up to 30-40 applications once on the market, it’s just not that easy – something an increasing number of our region’s families are now finding out first hand.

Ms Etelaaho said Vinnies was fielding visits and calls from between one and four families a day – all of whom were either already homeless or who were at high risk of

“Mum had lost her job and the income was no longer there for them to keep their house.

“And this is just one case. We have other families which are having to be separated – and kids stay with friends or relations so there is some stability for them while Mum and Dad try to find something more permanent.”

Ms Etelaaho said an increasing number of families were also being forced to move out of their accommodation because landlords were looking to take advantage of a surge in property values.

“We cannot blame them, though,” Ms Etelaaho said.

“These are people who have been scraping by for years with very low rents and now they have a chance to sell the property now we are coming out of the downturn and property values have improved.”

It’s a vicious cycle, she said. And it has changed what homelessness looks like.

doctors coming to work here who are having to find and rent out a room in someone else’s house so they have somewhere to live, and everyone from our emergency services to people coming for work are finding themselves in a similar situation.

Pets, too were a barrier for many seeking accommodation.

“There are RTA (Residential Tenancies Authority) changes also coming into play which will ease some conditions for people with pets, for instance, because that is another barrier to gaining a rental and there are many people who will choose to be homeless over losing their pet.”

While workforce casualisation, contract work and the ebb and flow of our regional economy has painted a grim picture for those at risk of homelessness, people need not feel powerless or lose hope.

“We know there is a shortage of houses; and we know there has been an allocation of $18.3million by the State Government to improve the availability of public housing although these are not immediate solutions.

“The best thing people can do is look after their tenancy. Make sure you read your mail. Make sure you understand what your requirements are.

“Anyone who is notified that they need to leave are given two months’ notice so this time needs to be used wisely and tenants cannot leave it until the last minute.

“The worst thing anyone can do is lose hope. There is always something that can be done and it might take time but there are good outcomes.”

Show a hit OVER 10,000 north Queenslanders enjoyed the Sarina Show.

Show Committee Vice-President, Ron Gurnett said the Sarina Show was much busier than the last pre-COVID Show in 2019.

“It’s also been good to see a much bigger sideshow presence and the Sideshow Management Guild has done a wonderful job,” Ron beamed.

“Our Committee brought forward the date for the Sarina Show by a week, so it didn’t clash with the Ekka.

“Next year, if we can get more helpers, we will pull down and re-erect the Cairns Ferris Wheel at the Sarina Show.

“A highlight of the Sarina Show is that it is the first time that both the highly competitively appointed positions of Rural Ambassador and Miss Showgirl for Central Queensland have come from Sarina and from our Show Committee.

“Each Show Society appoints a Miss Show Girl and a Rural Ambassador to represent Central Queensland after competing for selection in Yeppoon.

“Alston Salli and Josie Dahtler both had to present to our Sarina rural Show committee, answer questionaires and be cross-examined in Yeppoon, so they could represent Central Queensland and then compete in the statewide competition at the Ekka in Brisbane.”

Alston and Josie said it has been a good opportunity to represent Central Queensland and we both opened the Sarina Show on Saturday night.

Alston added that she is ‘keen to get more younger generation people involved and I will mentor them, so hopefully, they will run the Sarina Show in the future’.

Drug driving

THOUSANDS of alleged drug drivers have been detected on the state’s roads during a fourmonth proactive road safety enforcement operation run by the Queensland Police Service (QPS). Operation Tango Anaconda, which commenced on March 1, focused on deterring drug driving offences through high visibility random drug testing. Over the course of the operation, 21,787 tests were conducted with 3,892 drug drivers detected. Acting Inspector Paul Algie said on average around one in every six (1:5.6) drivers intercepted throughout the operation tested positive.

“It’s disappointing,” he said.

JT’s airline flying to Whitsundays FAR North Queensland aviation operator Skytrans has announced two new services offering business and leisure passenger greater access to key regional areas.

For the first time, Skytrans will operate return flights between Cairns-Whitsunday Coast Airport-Rockhampton. These services will depart five times per week and commence from September 13.

The regular flights connecting Cairns to the Whitsundays will allow greater access for Far North Queensland into resorts on Hamilton, Daydream and Hayman Islands.

Skytrans Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne said “the Queensland owned company was proud to be expanding its services” Mr Milne said “the new services be-

tween Cairns-Whitsunday Coast Airport-Rockhampton would position the company to grow strongly as demand picks up” “The big winners will be locals who live in Cairns, the Whitsunday region and Rockhampton because they will have additional choice and we are committed to delivering the best service possible for these local communities,” Mr Milne said.

Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox said “it was exciting that the Council owned airport had inked a deal with Queensland owned airline Skytrans that would deliver another 44,000

seats annually to the Whitsunday region” “We are excited to add a new airline partner that will increase our national domestic connectivity as well as international connectivity when the world reopens post the Covid pandemic” “The Whitsundays is one of the most popular domestic holiday destinations and with an additional 44,000 seats annually via Skytrans, we can welcome more visitors to our backyard, in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef,” Mayor Willcox said.

In addition to the announcement of the Whitsunday route, Skytrans will commence flying today from Cairns to Horn Island in the Torres Strait.

Raw water BLOOMSBURY residents are being asked to conserve their water supply. The call comes with the treatment plant struggling to treat the raw water supply due to poor raw water quality. Council will be carting water to the township today to supplement supply and reduce the isk of dirty water. Residents are encouraged to avoid watering their lawns, washing cars or filling up swimming pools until normal system operations resume. Council is investigating the development of an additional bore to reduce issues associated with water quality and supply risks in the future.

Rugby visit

RUGBY league fans are set for an absolute blinder when former legends of the game visit for a charity match in the Isaac region this September. Isaac Regional Council has given its backing to the International Legends of League to stage an exhibition game against an Isaac All Stars team at Darryl Brooke Oval and school visits on 16-18 September 2021.

Mayor Anne Baker said the knock-on effect for local communities through re-activating events during COVID is part of Council’s goals to deliver programs targeting the wellbeing of Isaac’s youth.

Knacker-bound horses saved

SARINA horse lovers Madeline Kocass and her mother Alyson are two of over 70 pony club horse owners who have saved and rehomed ex-racehorses.

They believe there are hundreds of “Second Chance Racehorses” in Queensland that have been given a good home and trained for show jumping, for dressage at pony clubs, for event management, polo, polo-cross and for private use.

“About one third, maybe more pony club riders get a “Second Chance Racehorse” when young riders get up in age and get better,” Alyson Kocass explained.

Madeline comes from a horseriding family and both her Mum and her grandfather also rode in the past.

So with family support and encouragement over the years, Madeline has had four ponies to compete in pony club events.

But Madeline’s new seven-yearold thoroughbred called Rockstar, has enabled her work towards com-

Small bird causes big stink THE Mackay Conservation Group has not backed down on its claims that the Black Throated Finch is being pushed closer to extinction by Adaini/Bravus mining activities.

The claims are strongly refuted by the mining company.

The Conservation Society cited a report provided to Adani by Woongal Environmental Services in 2020 which they say “shows that there was a dramatic decrease in observations of the birds at the mine site in the previous year. In the 2018 dry season 1026 birds were sited by Adani’s environmental contractor.

“During the dry season of 2019

only 119 birds were observed.

That’s a reduction of 88 percent.

“In their 2021 report Woongal says they have ‘provided the results of the initial two-year population estimate to Bravus via a stand-alone memo’.”

They said the bird’s most important remaining habitat is on the Adani mine site.

However, Adani/Bravus has set aside 33,000 hectares as alternative habitat for the Black Throated Finch which is much larger than its open cut mine.

The Conservation Group believes that this land “is not of the same quality as the land on the mine site itself. (The Woongal report)

shows that in 2020 there were a total of 398 bird sightings on the mine site and only 29 in the offset area. It is clear that the offset is not preferred habitat for the Black Throated Finch,” they said.

“To put it in human terms, Adani could build a convenience store on every street corner in Mackay but people would still prefer to shop at the major supermarkets because they know they can buy everything they need there.”

The mining company however, said they have done “extensive research over the past decade on the black-throated finch into nesting, breeding, feeding habits and movement patterns. Our third-party scientific experts noted that a

Coking, thermal coal future hot COKING and thermal coal have undeniably strong futures, based on Asian economic growth and demand for electricity. Although the public perception is that thermal coal is in inevitable decline, the hard data indicates just the opposite.

The BBMC July luncheon attendees were treated to a dual speaker event this month – Mark Gresswell, Director, Commodity Insights and Nick Jorss, Executive Chairman, Bowen Coking Coal. Both speakers strongly affirmed the buoyant future of coking and thermal coal, backing up their assertions with economic data from around the globe.

Global perception Mark pointed out that global perceptions of coal are largely framed by the North Atlantic players – USA and Europe. Both those continents have access to relatively cheap gas

According to Commodity Insights’ research, “Asia will account for over two-thirds of global electricity demand growth by 2040. Asian electricity generation growth will be equivalent to the current generation of North America plus Europe. This will be supported by over 150,000MW of new coal-fired capacity being built

across Asia. And regarding steel, the potential for growth in consumption from the current low per capita level is massive.”

Conversely, Asia has minimal competitive gas supply and requires coal, the cheapest energy alternative, to feed economic growth based on its strongly increasing demand for energy and steel, and its emerging economic status on the world stage.

The reality of Asian growth The reality is that forecast growth by every metric for ‘the Asian juggernaut’ will continue to create a sustained and growing demand for both coking and thermal coal.

The current strong coal prices have rebounded from sub-US$50 per tonne 12 months ago to an all-time high for thermal coal (over US$150), with high prices and increased demand also bolstering metallurgical coal exports.

According to the OECD, in 2019 Asia accounted for 42 percent of global GDP. This will rise to 54 percent by 2050, and Asia will include 4 of the world’s 5 largest economies (China, India, Indonesia and Japan).

Supply-side challenges While the outlook is decidedly bullish on coal exports from Australia, supply-side challenges threaten to

hamper the country’s ability to meet forecast demand.

The regulatory approval process is sluggish to respond to calls for rationalisation, and sourcing capital is becoming an issue as banks and financial suppliers bow to negative social pressures. Overall, Mark forecasts that “slowing of supply and ongoing demand growth will result in a period of high prices and ‘super-normal profits’ for coal producers globally.”

Nick Jorss, Executive Chairman, Bowen Coking Coal (BCB) reiterated Mark’s overall optimism for the future of the Queensland coal industry.

The Bowen Basin owns the most favourable geography for seaborne coal to Asia, and Bowen Coking Coal are poised to emerge as the Basin’s next significant coking coal producer.

Local bush medicine KEVIN McPHERSON is a local indigenous businessman making use of his people’s cultural knowledge.

Kevin is the founder and operator of Macgumby, the producer and distributer of fine bush medicines and ointments.

“I’m a Barada Man, this is my clan group.

Our country is out on the Marlborough, Sarina inland highway, in the Lotus Creek area,” Kevin told this newspaper.

“That’s where my grandmother’s country is.

From there you go to Clarke Creek, turn right to go to Issacs River then go over to my grandfather’s country. It’s all Kabalbara, we have another clan group out there called Yetimarala.”

Kevin explained how his thriving business began.

“In 2017/2018 I went out to a little town called Mitchell in Western Queensland and they were handing back what you call the Yamba, it was a block of dirt where my father grew up and everything like that.

“Then the Government come and made a move on the Mitchell and surrounding areas.

They had a fiftieth anniversary, and my cousin was there and she is a very intelligent person with bush medicine and bush plants and she was making Gumby Gumby soap.

“So, this is where it all started from and got me interested.”

Gumby Gumby is a native tree with healing properties and Kevin’s people have been using it for thousands of years.

“It is a medicine tree, its good for healing the inside and the outside, you can eat the leaves, I eat the leaves, you can boil it up for tea,” Kevin said.

“It’s a very sacred medicine tree, we have

FOUR CQUniversity-trained VET students nominated in Central Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards CQUniversity’s vocational education and training excellence has once again been recognised with four students nominated in the 2021 Central Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards.

CQUniversity has four finalists in the categories of Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year and Equity VET Student of the Year.

Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year finalist, Jack Mitchell of Mackay, studied a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade as a Fitter and Turner, and is employed by Jennmar Australia.

Airlie impacted

FEW people have felt the impacts of Covid-19 on Australia’s live music industry more than Airlie Beach Festival of Music founder Gavin Butlin.

Due to the pandemic, Mr Butlin and his team were forced to cancel the 2020 festival, as well as a host of satellite events for that year, including the national Passport to Airlie competition.

This year, against all odds, the festival is fullsteam-ahead for November 5-7, and the search for Australia’s next big original live music act is now well underway.

Mr Butlin said Passport to Airlie heats were kicking off in seven locations across the continent, and he urged music lovers nationwide to support their local entrants, as well as buying tickets to the main event.

“We understand consumer confidence is low across Australia, particularly now that in some states lockdowns have become a way of life, but we are determined to give our stellar all-Australian line-up a platform in paradise to play from and we are committed to bringing live music back to the fans,” he said.

TOURISM Whitsundays is excited to launch the new business events virtual reality site inspection and destination marketing videos that will be an imperative tool for distribution across the website and social media platforms for The Whitsundays, the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

Thanks to funding received from Business Events Australia, Tourism Whitsundays partnered with tourism operators to develop the virtual reality tour.

The headsets will allow users to immerse themselves into The Whitsundays and experience all that our diverse region has on offer while ‘Siri’ guides users through the journey. Riptide Creative were appointed to complete the project.

Local author’s fourth book AFTER the success of her three previously published children’s books, Debbie Brooker, a local Mackay author has published her fourth book.

Her latest book “Thoughts are Free” (Die Gedanken Sind Frei) is a small adult chapter paperback, published by InHouse Publishing in Queensland.

Debbie writes from her heart, based on real-life and her experience.

This latest book came about from her love of history, her travel experiences in the 1980s and a very special friendship that began in 1975 with her then East German penpal, Gerlind.

Mostly the story is true, although names have been changed so as not to identify anyone and a little fiction to bring it into context with the current

times we are living. With this in mind, Debbie says her book fits into the genre of Memoir and Historical Fiction.

It has been recommended to women in their 20s and really anyone who has ever been in their 20s, have travelled, have penpals, love history and value friendship.

Friendship, travel and modern history happening around us can have a profound effect on a person’s way of thinking and ultimately their life choices if there is the freedom to make those choices.

Once your mind is opened and stretched it doesn’t go back to what it once was.

The story follows Emma who is given a box of letters that belonged to her

mother. The letters unravel a story of two girls’ friendship encircled by world history events at opposite ends of the world.

Although they have never met in person, their friendship is so important to each of them for individual reasons.

Where you are born in the world may determine how you live, but your dreams and thoughts are yours alone.

The book retails at $15 a copy.

More COVID help THE COVID-19 hardship grant for not-forprofit sporting and community groups has been extended. Mackay Regional Council allocated $250,000 in funding as part of the 2021-2022 budget, with sporting and community groups able to apply for up to $2000 to assist with the impact of COVID-19. Applications have been extended and close at midnight on Tuesday, August 31. Mayor Greg Williamson said the application process was simple, with approvals elegated to the CEO. “Funding is available to any not-for-profit group in the region that has lost revenue due to the impacts of COVID-19 or incurred extra expenses to make their day-to-day operations COVID Safe,” he said. “Applicants just need to show hardship by providing copies of their treasurer’s reports for the last two financial years. “The grants can be used to cover operational expenses or to support initiatives that will nsure the ongoing viability of organisations into the future.

STANDING IN RESPECT: Andrew Clough was a man who touched the minds and hearts of many people, spearos and others with his warm personality and outgoing nature. He had a love of the sea and the creatures in it. Around 1995 Andrew made Mackay home where he settled himself into the Mackay Down Under Skin Diving Club. During his time in Mackay Andrew was able to clock up some impressive QLD and Australian records. New Year’s Eve in 2002 Andrew lost his life and soon after the Mackay Down Under Skin Diving Club gave life to a new spearing competition that reflects what and how Andrew speared. As a result, the “Cloughy Challenge” was born. This year the event was held last weekend

Cassar-Daly pumped for Mackay show FROM FRONT PAGE When asked what he loved most about Mackay Cassar-Daley said, “It is a place that really affected me, when I was very, very young.

“I started touring through there when I was in my twentys, and I remember the first time I went through the town - it was in 1990.

“I crossed over the river to go to the northern side.

“It was just an amazing thing; it was top of the tide, it just grabbed me, and from that moment on I just thought, ‘wow I got to get back here and do some more shows’,” he said.

The last time he was in town, Cassar-Daley played at the Northern Beaches Bowls Club,

with his daughter.

“She still talks about it. People are very much in to their music, and I think that’s the reason it’s really appropriate that this festival is held in Mackay.”

“I have known Graeme Connors for a long time, and he is a good mate of mine, “When you know the people are invested, not only with money but with their hearts as well, it makes you want to do the best for the show.

“Mackay is definitely a big town but it still has a small town feel to me.

“People nod their heads or say G’day, or lift their finger off a steering wheel and that’s what this town is all about.”

Cassar-Daley really believes this event will be special for the Mackay region, saying there is “a lot of good that will come out of it”.

“There is a lot of good will in this show, and one thing I will say is we need local support.

“Because a lot of people can’t travel, obviously people can’t travel interstate, so we need people from the surrounding areas because I think this show will be quite special,” he said.

Troy Cassar-Daley will be performing on Sunday August 22 from 6:20pm to 7:20pm and is looking forward to catching up COWBOY MUSIC: Troy will be playing both kinds. Country. And Western on stage with fellow musicians.

This is what Qld Road Rules state with regards to roundabouts: Who gives way at a roundabout?

When approaching a roundabout you must give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout.

When is the correct time to indicate on and off a roundabout?

If you are taking the first exit to the left, you indicate left.

If you are taking the second exit going straight, you don’t indicate entering the roundabout but as you exit the roundabout you indicate left.

If you are taking the third exit turning right or making a “U” turn, you indicate right when entering the roundabout and as you exit the roundabout you indicate left.

When to turn off a multi-lane roundabout You can position your car to be in the correct lane at a roundabout by looking for signs, lane markings and arrows when approaching the roundabout.

Unless traffic lane arrows indicate otherwise, if you want to: • turn left, use the left lane • turn right, use the right lane • go straight ahead, use either lane.

So, this week, I would like to talk about setting realistic expectations. These are very important on both a personal and professional level.

On a personal level, we each set our own expectations. We expect a certain level of treatment from others, and we decide what behaviour we will and will not accept.

If you are a leader in the workplace, your role is to set expectations that others need to adhere to. At times, this can be a tough gig! Soften the challenge by being honest. When you set honest expectations, you give a realistic view and allow people the opportunity to meet those expectations. Or they could decide the job is not for them and you have not wasted time in recruiting and training someone who will not fit into your environment.

Let them know about the culture of your workplace, the values and behaviours that underpin that culture and what is expected to successfully fulfil the role.

Set them up for success!

YOU can’t wipe the smile from my face.

This time last week Mackay was a sea of colour as we waited with baited breath for our first NRL game in years to start.

The much anticipated clash between heavy weights, my Sydney Roosters and Parramatta Eels happened so quickly, we didn’t have a chance to take a breath and absorb. It was over as quickly as it got announced. No sooner did the players fly in at 4pm, they were gone as quickly after 10pm on their private plane back to NRL Bubble Heaven.

When the NRL said they were bringing a top grade game to our fair city we collectively gasped as to who that could be. When Uncle Greg Williamson told us it was two of the most successful clubs in the history of the game, I nearly fell over.

I knew then it wasn’t the Cowboys or Broncos, so I got my ticketing fingers at the ready.

Online tickets sold out in a matter of minutes, people cried, and I jumped for joy as I had my tickets in my red, white and blue hands and no one was taking them from me. Not even my COVID restricted Dad in Sydney could steal them from me.

Last Thursday couldn’t come quick enough

for the legion of rugby league supporters.

Gatesopened at 5:30 to BB Print Stadium and I reckon my Levi’s were sitting in Row A at 5:32pm all in readiness for the bloodbath that was to come.

Let’s just say the 28 to nil Roosters victory result wasn’t the game we were expecting but hey I’ll take it any day of the week.

Sure we couldn’t shake our favourite players hands, or even get a close selfie with them due to COVID after the game but this didn’t stop me from stalking the heck out of all of them.

FYI. I may or may not have been the bloke who whilst wearing a COVID mask was easily led into the media press room to hear from the coaches and a very happy Jared Waerea-Hargreaves on his 250th NRL game victory. No I couldn't get a photo as my identity would have been blown but I was smiling behind the surgical grade cloth.

To the other 4925 other people in the stadium, thank you for being my friend. The Parramatta fans behind us went quiet quickly and then quickly turned their attention to the kid who ran onto the field. I won’t repeat the words they were chanting, but I will say even my 81 year old Dad would be shocked in a funny way.

Can’t wait for game two in Mackay! Come back Roosters. We all love you up here.

I promise I won’t stalk you this time. Honest.

Looking forward to seeing what a Federal-style ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption) will uncover. Oh wait, we don’t have one.

This news got me thinking more generally about the accountability of those elected to represent us, and that justice must not only be done, but be seen to be done.

Interestingly, there is a new proposal being put forward by a movement of activists and le-

gal scholars seeking to make “ecocide” an international crime within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. I wonder if those responsible for repealing Australia’s (at the time) world-leading climate laws in 2014 might be feeling a little nervous?

Currently, our very own federal environment minister has argued in an appeal against a landmark Federal Court ruling that she does not have a duty of care to protect Australian children from climate harm caused by the potential expansion of a coal mine.

I suppose this is also in keeping with the government seemingly not wanting to have a duty of care for aged-care residents, citizens still stranded overseas, children in detention, refugees, those part of the NDIS, the unemployed, whistle blowers, alleged rape victims in parliament house, or

Bennett HUMAN behaviour is fascinating isn’t it?

Potentially confusing, confronting, delightful, unkind or generous by turns, sometimes in the space of a few minutes, and the challenge is that we’re not consciously aware of our own behaviour or its impact on those around us.

We talk a lot about behaviour in our work with groups and individuals, building their understanding around what drives it and the triggers that can cause us to react rather than respond. That’s different for everyone of course because it’s a combination of our unique life experience, values, beliefs personality and myriad other aspects, and can be either effective or ineffective, working for or against us.

Think of a time when someone’s behaviour irritated you, it might have been a one off or perhaps it was a repetitive behaviour that aggravated you over time, and if you’ve experienced that, did you let them know about it? How did that go? An unacceptable behavioural trait may seem inconsequential, but very often its impact is not.

Depending on our nature and our experience we might be quite comfortable to tell the person about it, however for many people concern about how the person may receive our message may stop us from saying anything even though it’s troubling us. In a work context offering feedback could create problems depending on who is responsible for the behaviour and their nature and therefore their ability to take it as constructive and fair. What if it’s your boss? On

the other hand, what are the consequences of saying nothing?

It can be even more daunting outside the workplace; it may be your partner, sibling, child or best friend and therefore you may feel as though the potential risk of their reaction outweighs any possible benefit.

It is important though. Ineffective or unacceptable behaviours wear us down over time and staying silent may cause us to erupt at a future point and our message will come out all wrong, fuelled by emotion and much more likely to be poorly received. The wrong message to the wrong person at the wrong time about the wrong topic is recipe for disaster.

What if it’s your behaviour and someone brings it to your attention? How would you handle the feedback? Would you be defensive and push back or take it with good grace and adjust the behaviour?

Either way, poor behaviour left unchecked causes a negative ripple that can be contagious so it’s important and valuable to bring someone’s behaviour to their attention provided it’s done in a caring, respectful and supportive way. When we focus on the impact of their behaviour on us without making any judgement about the person, it’s much easier to keep any emotion out of the message.

Remember that it’s human and common to demonstrate ineffective behaviour at times particularly if we are in a stressful situation, unwell or tired and it’s possible to bring it to our awareness in a way that enables us to make a more effective choice.

“WATER is wealth and dams are banks.”

Those were the words of Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce as a further $12.65 million in Federal funding was announced to get the Urannah Dam project to shovel-ready stage.

These funds will get the final two hurdles, the geotechnical and environmental assessments, out of the way and see concrete poured before the end of 2022.

Make no mistake, this is not funding for some airy-fairy study, it will get the project shovel-ready. There are private investors with funds ready to flow and the key proponents of this project, Bowen River Utilities have been doing all the hard yards behind the scenes to get this dam built.

Unfortunately, the reality is that major investors don’t want to put their money into these kinds of projects for fear that they’ll collapse at the environmental stage.

It’s a sad state of affairs that greens groups

have made major infrastructure projects too risky for private investors to get behind.

Mackay Conservation Group and other green activist organisations are still campaigning against Urannah, despite the overwhelming support for the dam to go ahead within the North Queensland community.

How can anyone campaign against shoring up our water supply and building a 1,000-megawatt pumped hydro plant which will provide energy for the region? Will these greenies ever be happy?

Remember, this is a 1.5 megalitre dam which will deliver over 1,800 jobs and open up a whole new agricultural footprint.

That investment in agriculture may shock those lefty environmentalists who are so used to blaming our farmers for everything from the reef dying to cow fart-induced climate change.

But forget all that noise from the green antagonists, Urannah Dam will get built; it’s inevitable.

This funding is a is a show of support from Canberra. It’s a statement that the Morrison Joyce Government is investing in dams, it’s backing jobs and growth North Queensland and it’s securing our future economic prosperity.

Viljoen Professor CQ University WELCOME to the first edition of my new fortnightly column in the Mackay Local News (MLN) - it’s an honour to have been given this opportunity.

With the loss of many print versions of regional Queensland mastheads last year, including our own paper in Mackay, it’s great to see MLN putting their faith in this wonderful community to bring a new publication to life in order to report on matters that are important to us. I am sure this paper will be welcomed by the community at large, who are keen to have their stories told, events publicised, and opinions heard.

In the form of an introduction, I have lived in Mackay for over 11 years however also appreciate that I have a couple of years to go before I can claim to be a ‘true’ local.

I am originally from South Africa and have a background in Industrial and Organisational Psychology.

I am currently CQUniversity’s Associate Vice-President for the North Queensland and Hinterland Region which include oversight of the CQUniversity operations at the City and Ooralea campuses.

Higher education is vitally important in regions such as Mackay, and now, more than ever, regional universities such as CQU are critical to Australia’s productivity and to the social fabric of our nation.

Scraping by until payday WE HAVE all be there at one time or another – just scraping by and hanging out for the next payday.

For some it comes from a run of bad luck. For others it is the way life is when juggling often low-paid casual jobs to make ends meet. And that’s without adding the gut-wrenching realities of life – be it divorce, domestic violence, the death of a loved-one, an injury, being retrenched … the list goes on.

Thankfully, most of us have the means and wherewithal to ensure we are galvanised enough to withstand most of what life throws at us – although, as we have seen in the past year or so, absolutely nothing could have prepared us for COVID, and now we are all left wondering what ‘unforeseen’ might be next.

Some are not so fortunate.

Certainly, there are cases where it could be argued that a situation might have been brought on – or at least might have been prevented – by those in the muck. But largely, and as we can see by our story on Page 1 today, homelessness has a new look – and if you though looking at grotty old men with matted hair and missing teeth, who were tucked up in a shelter at night was tough, this new face is a whole lot harder to take in. (And yes, this is a ‘stereotype’ but it’s what many people immediately thing of.)

WE HAVE a wide variety of presenters at 4CRM which add positively and creatively to our wide variety of music.

Can you guess which very talented presenter this is?

“My time at 4crm began about 5 years ago.

I walked in the door one day to check things out and was on air the next morning. I now do the breakfast program on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as occasionally filling in at other times. I produce Radio Church on Sunday mornings at 8am.

“I had previous experience at two community radio stations in rural Victoria. As well as presenting a breakfast program five days per week, I was on the board of both stations; Pres-

ident of one before moving to Mackay; and trainer for prospective new presenters at the other. Since becoming involved in community radio I have undertaken several Professional Development programs.

“Prior to all this, I had studied in the USA and earned a double degree at university in Theology and Communication Arts, which is comprised of radio, television and print journalism and production.

“Eclectic! That’s probably the best way to express my tastes in music. However, my favourite genre is rock and popular music from the mid-60’s to mid-70’s.“I enjoy volunteering and making a positive contribution to the life of others. For example, prior to COVID, I spent several months each year travelling the outback as a volunteer for Aussie Helpers meeting and supporting our Australian farming families.

“I enjoy jogging at parkrun each week and

am a member of the Mackay Road Runners club. I’ve also motorcycled to many parts of Australia and enjoyed riding track days and marshalling at MotoGPs, Superbikes and Formula 1 races.

“I am also a Pastor at Beaches Baptist Church, Rural View (part-time).

“Apart from meeting other presenters at 4CRM I really enjoy interacting with listeners either on the phone or meeting them out and about.”

Doctors. Nurses. Teachers. Emergency Services. Families. Casually employed or contract mine workers. People coming to Mackay in the desperate hope of making a living and making a future for themselves – and often offering a skills for a gap screaming to be filled.

These people are in the school drop-off line. They have cars. They have things.

They don’t have homes. It’s not for a lack of trying either – on the most part, anyway.

“I got this after my grandfather passed away. I got it from State of the art tattoo here in Mackay it was $160 and it was one of my least painful tattoos. It’s just his star sign.

There will always be the deadbeats and the no-hopers for whom life’s just too hard. Ironically, there are social safety nets in place to catch them when they repeatedly stumble and fall. But what about the middle ground? What about those who befall tough times and just need a bit of a go for a bit of a time?

Certainly, there are some solutions on the horizon. As there always seems to be. And I am always slightly bemused at the fact we always have a bevy of long-term solutions which seem not to yield much value in the ‘long term’.

This new face of homelessness is not the kind likely to be shifted to the outer suburbs, nice and out of sight, when something like the Olympics comes to town. But it has far more insidious and economically dangerous outcomes for our region.

This issue needs to be addressed – and it cannot fall to the incredible work being done by those like Raeleen Etelaaho and her team at St Vincent de Paul Housing. If not addressed, we will see a simple example of cause and effect: If you were a doctor, a teacher, an engineer, a tradesperson or a member of our essential services would you drag your family to a place where you’d be at risk of not finding adequate housing?

Probably not.

So, while these things are always more complicated than they seem, the maths is not that hard.

Sort our housing crisis and the rest falls in place. It’s a lesson we were taught in the last boom. The big question, though, is did we actually learn?

It told me “Your participation is important. You can complete your form now by following these steps.”

Hold on, the census wants to know where I’m staying and who’s with me on August 10. If I had filled it out “now”, as they said I could, that would have been more than a week before August 10.

How could I possibly know for certain where I would be and who would be with me on August 10. I might be on the wrong side of the grass by then. How could incorrect information “help make important decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and business”?

And would I be fined, posthumously, for providing false information?

---------------Sign in a local restaurant at the entrance to the toilets. “Please sanitize your hands to stop the spread of COVID”. Silly me. I always thought going to the toilet as enough incentive to wash your hands when you were eating. Thank goodness for COVID. ---------------“I wrote a letter,” said KRudd (of the Kevin07 variety), when claiming/disclaiming credit for getting extra doses of Pfizer vaccine for his worshippers.

Local twirlers dance away to victory LOCAL twirlers Sienna Skaines and Lara Taylor received the Overall Awards at the Twirltastic Competition held on Saturday at Mackay North State High School Community Hall.

Sienna, 8, received the IDA Encouragement Award from the judges for displaying confidence, developing technique and enjoyment on the floor in performances.

Lara, 15, received the IDA Most Outstanding Trophy for a twirler who has excelled in sections throughout the day.

This award is based on the overall tabulated results. Lara placed first in all individual events - Strut, Solo, 2 Baton and Dancetwirl. Lara and her pairs partner

Yarra Taylor also received first in the pairs event.

The competition was hosted by International Dance Affair, with athletes from Rockhampton and Mackay competing in individual, pairs and team events.

Judges Judy Vidulich, Susan McDonald, Nadine Pace, Raelene Taylor and Angela Coleman were kept busy throughout the day.

Susan McDonald commented on both the development of the twirlers and the wonderful atmosphere of the minor competition.

“Considering this is the first competition held in the region this year, it is a credit to the coaches to view the progress of the athletes since 2020. The wonderful

camaraderie between competitors shows the respectful friendships these twirlers have established.

I look forward to judging these athletes again at the Queensland State Titles in September on the Sunshine Coast,” Susan said.

Twirling is a unique sport which incorporates handling of the baton to create visual patterns, close in and around the body and by releasing the baton into the air.

Development improves execution of dexterity, smoothness and speed. Twirling also teaches expression of the body through dance and movement, incorporating acrobatic arts adapted to baton twirling to create risk and excitement.

Industry reaches out to young people KEVIN

IN THE past weeks sugar prices have been moving higher than has been experienced in the sugar industry for some time.

With the return of greater confidence, CANEGROWERS Mackay is reaching out to young people in our industry who may be starting to think more seriously about careers in the sugar industry.

To build confidence, CANEGROWERS Mackay will sponsor two students aged between 15 and 20 who are the children of cane grower members and who are interested in undertaking the exciting new Entrepreneurial Learning in Action course.

The course is currently being

offered to agricultural students at North Mackay High School, thanks to Agrifutures Australia, a research and development organisation working to advance agriculture, funded by the Australian Government.

For the past three years AgriFutures and business education company, Startup.Business, have run the program in schools around Australia to help students learn about running an agri-business and solving local problems in agriculture.

Interested students from other schools can also participate in the entrepreneurial course online outside of school hours through Startup.Business Education’s website https://startup.business/ entrepreneur-course/ The course normally costs $100 and takes about six weeks or about two hours per week. At the

end of the course students receive a certification badge that they can display on their resume. Participation via Zoom at the Brilliant Business Kids Festival on 15 October is also included.

CANEGROWERS Mackay is offering this opportunity to two of our members’ children to give them the chance to meet other agricultural students around Australia and broaden their horizons about an exciting future in agriculture - particularly in the sugar industry.

Farm demonstration In another initiative for growers who are hoping to use more agtech on their cane farms, CANEGROWERS Mackay and

Aerial Asset Control will hold an onfarm demonstration of a large drone in action on a Sunnyside farm on Friday 13 August (weather and planting schedules permitting!).

The demonstration aims to assist farmers to decide whether a contractor using a drone to apply agricultural chemicals on their farm would be an affordable, convenient alternative to having to do it themselves or having to use a helicopter.

The drone is also capable of mapping a farm to determine feral pig hotspots and to locate weed infestations. Of course, the drone is not only useful in the cane industry so come along if you want to talk about the opportunities in other agricultural industries, mining, tourism, search and rescue, fire control and regional councils.

Powerline near misses With a high number of near misses between cane harvesters and powerlines already this season, CANEGROWERS Mackay has come to an arrangement with Ergon to display 10 Rotamarkers on farms from Carmila to Kuttabul and west to Benholme to show growers their usefulness in making powerlines visible when harvesting near them.

CANEGROWERS Mackay Member Services Officer, Michelle Martin who organised the installation of the Rotamarkers, says each marker costs only about $100 (ex GST) and are installed

by Ergon at no cost.

“The rotating motion of these red and white markers draws the

eye and ensures that harvester operators can see the powerlines when operating near them,” she said.

“To order one you just need to complete a Powerline Marker Application Form available on Ergon Energy’s website (www.ergon. com.au – search on Powerline Markers) and return it to Ergon Safety Advice (safetyadvice@ergon.com.au).

“Ergon then processes the work order and forwards it to Network Performance Officers here in Mackay who will arrange a quote and installation.”

Rotamarkers are of course a useful safety device for all businesses which have high equipment and machinery which must operate near powerlines.

Helping with men’s mental health MENTAL health, is something that should be taken seriously and sharing feelings for men has never been easy. With so much emphasis on the male gender to be hard and unemotional, sometimes we forget we are human.

Enter Frank Cowell, 67, a local who is doing his part for men’s mental health.

Jacob Cumner interviewed Frank, the founder of the International Men’s Day Mackay Inc, incorporating Shed Happens Mackay, to get some insight in to how this event really helps the men in our community.

JC Occupation?

Retired soldier- 25 years service as an Infantry soldier JC How long have you been working?

I worked for over 45 years continuously and retired four years ago, due to Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis JC Organisation? International Men’s Day Mackay Inc, incorporating Shed Happens Mackay JC How long have you been with this organisation?

Since it’s inception three years ago JC When did you get involved

with international Men’s Day? I initiated the celebration of International Men’s Day (IMD) here in Mackay three years ago.

JC How did you start the organisation in Mackay?

I formed a committee from my Shed Happens Leadership Group and we organized it among us. I consulted with Warwick Marsh of Dad’s4Kids who is the Convenor of International Men’s Day for Australia.

JC Why did you decide to start up the organisation in Mackay?

The six pillars of IMD align with the ethos of Shed Happens.

For the past twenty years I have been involved in the ‘manhood’ arena of teaching.

If you ask a man today to define the term manhood, he will struggle to give a succinct answer.

If you ask him when he became a man, again he will struggle to define the moment. My goal is to address this gap in understanding, IMD goes some way to identifying the things a man should be thinking about and modelling.

JC How did your get appointed to the presidency?

We had an initial meeting and I was voted in. I have been voted in at an Annual General Meeting unopposed all three years.

JC How many years have you been running this?

We only hand out one award and that is Mackay Man Of The Year, there are prizes for the two runners up. This award started in 2020.

To recognise a man who aligns with the six pillars of IMD in his everyday life. He will most likely not be well known

We are not predominantly a fund-raising organisation. The fund-raising is a result of sponsorship of IMD Celebrations.

Goldfish, stunningly beautiful pet fish OFTEN overlooked and among the most common fish in the aquarium hobby are goldfish.

Goldfish can be distinguished from koi and common carp by the absence of barbels or “whiskers” in the corners of their mouth. Through selective breeding, many “fancy” goldfish strains sporting different body shapes, colours and fin types are available today.

They include comets, shubunkins, fantails, orandas, ryukins, moors, telescope eyes, celestial eyes, bubble eyes, butterfly tails, pearl scales, wakins, lionheads, ranchus and many more.

Fancy goldfish can become stunningly beautiful and command high prices.

All varieties of goldfish are the same species – Carrassius auratus. When properly cared for, goldfish can live over 20 years in captivity.

Considered cold water fish, goldfish can also be kept in heated aquariums.

The optimum temperature for fancy goldfish is 68° to 74° F. Rapid changes in temperature or water chemistry can be harmful, if not fatal to goldfish.

A tablespoon of aquarium or sea salt per five gallons can also be used to help keep goldfish in good health. Maintain good filtration and change 10 percent of the water weekly or 25 percent every two. Don’t forget to treat tap with Water Conditioner before refill.

Goldfish should never be kept in bowls, small aquariums or any unfil-

tered container!

In addition to having relatively high oxygen demands, they grow to be quite large and generate a significant amount of waste, which can be harmful if allowed to accumulate. Common goldfish, make excellent outdoor pond fish and are known to survive relatively cold winters. Fancy goldfish, such as orandas, ryukins, moors and others, can also be kept in outdoor ponds, but are more vulnerable to predators and must be brought in during winter in harsh climates.

In aquariums, adult common goldfish, comets and shubunkins should have at least 20 gallons of water per fish, while adult fancy goldfish should have at least 10 gallons per adult fish.

The filter should be slightly over-sized to accommodate high waste production and additional aeration is recommended when goldfish are kept at warmer temperatures.

Larger goldfish will eat many types of live plants, with the possible exception of Cryptocorynes, Java fern and Anubias, although they may uproot these, too. Avoid decorations with sharp edges and abrasive rocks such as lava and tufa, which may tear delicate fins as well as eye sacs on bubble eyes, celestial eyes, moors and telescopes.

Goldfish like to forage in the substrate, so avoid jagged or crushed glass gravel. Provide adequate water flow but avoid strong currents.

Teach them how to fish FISH, as a staple food source for people since we trod the earth, also plays a large part in our religion, philosophy and mythology.

One of the most famous metaphors using fish is the saying, “give a person fish to eat and you will feed them for a day, teach them how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime”.

Jesus, in the four New Testament Bible Gospels, famously fed 5000 people on five loaves of bread and two fish.

This is known as The Feeding of the 5000.

Some refer to it as the “miracle of the five loaves and two fish”; This story is reported in several

of the Gospels and the Gospel of John tells us thatt Jesus used five loaves and two fish which were supplied by a boy to feed a whole bunch of starving people.

Whilst he was there, he exhibited his trademark compassion and also healed their sick for them.

Now, you don’t have to be a churchgoer to enjoy the Bible.

It’s no accident this book is still around and guiding people after so many years.

There are lessons of morality to be learnt that make us better people.

For those of you who haven’t picked up a Bible lately, here’s the story of the fishes as outlined in Matthew 14:13-21.

We are now into August 2021 with some partly cloudy weather predicted over the next couple of so days but with the New Moon on Saturday and Sunday it brings some really great fishing so still get out and wet a line over the weekend!

The skies will be clearing up bringing beautiful Queensland weather during the week so if you don’t get out over the weekend do try to get some fishing in during the week if you have the time!

I want to quickly write about the ‘Hooked on Mackay’ Facebook page and if you haven’t already go give this page a like! It’s all about Mackay, packed with videos on where,what,how to catch and cook fish in the stunning region we are lucky to live in!

It’s got updates on everything you need to know to make your next fishing trip a success, cheers to all involved!

Over the next week I am focussing on catching a feed of whiting at the beach with my lil lad. It’s as easy as packing up the snacks, the hats, the sunscreen ,the fishing gear and having a day down at the beach.

Any beach is a good beach to catch whiting and the tides do play an important role. I like to fish the incoming tide for whiting although it can involve a fair bit of walking. I like to choose a beach that has a fast incoming tide, with the tide it brings the fish looking for a feed.

I like to look for light wave crashing, nothing too strong as I can’t feel my light gear when the fish are biting. When holding onto your bait and your rod I saw this great fishing hack from this young lad online where he has cut out two holes in an ice-cream bucket and tied it around his waist so that he had his bait there ready to go for when the whiting are biting!

Like I have written before I like to use the small handlines when fishing for whiting and as light gear as possible. If permitting I try not to use a sinker at all, but at times this can’t be avoided so a light ball sinkers on a running rig is my go to and with that I let the bait slowly sink to the bottom.

I constantly check my bait to make sure that it is always fresh and the small fish do win the battle of nibbling my bait off before a decent fish does but, hey that is fishing!

It’s a great day whether you catch or not and refer to your fisheries website for all the details but I did a bit of a Google and Trumpeter (winter) whiting have no legal size limit but a posession limit of 50 applies.

Sand whiting (summer) whiting, golden-lined whiting and Northern whiting all have legal size of 23cm and a combined possession limit of 30 in total. So you heard that guys, get out and catch some whiting!

The best way to prepare these species for the table is to dust in a bit of flour and pan fry in butter! Yum! I hope to see you out and about and getting amongst it this month! Untill next week, Mackay Community, Happy Fishing!

It houses a Th 400, Haltech Platinum sport ECU an Torque Power single plane.

He has always had a love for drag racing and this car was the perfect fit for him when he bought it. It has had two stages of rebuilds where it ran 12.50 and now an upgrade where it runs 11.30.

Drag racing has always been apart of Scott’s and his brothers’ lives since they were young and they’re pretty worried about the younger generation these days missing out on what we loved so much as kids.

Bare Bones, still showing the world how it’s done BARE Bones racing team had a killer weekend at Newman’s Excavations 100 in Moranbah!

Saturday morning Bare Bones prologued first in class, never had they ever done that before.

This had the team super hyped for the rest of the weekend. Each heat the team continued to lead the class with constant times and consistent driving (although there were a couple scenic tours).

Final heat for the weekend, only 200m from start line they managed to slash a tyre.

Les said they were not stopping for a flat, so the team raced a whole two laps on a flat tyre.

This little setback had the team rather upset thinking they had lost the first place they had held all weekend. However, the results told a different story.

Dads rule at Pioneer Swimming Club THE kids of Pioneer Swimming Club reckon their Dads rule!

And it’s true on so many levels.

For the first time in the club’s 43-year history – and as a rarity among many junior clubs throughout the region – the Dolphin’s committee is an all-Dad affair!

The committee – made up of President Damien Noon, Vice President Craig Robinson, Secretary Jason Mulvogue and Treasurer Lee Parkes – was voted in at the club’s AGM held earlier this year.

Quick to take the plunge, the foursome is already making waves, introducing a new schedule of fundraising activities and actively seeking out sponsors.

“The club was started in 1978 and this is the first time in our 43 years that we have had an all-Dad committee,” Mr Noon said.

“The previous committee has done a great job and we are in a good place to pick up and move forward with some new ideas and take a new direction with fundraising and sponsorships.”

Mr Noon said the club had a list of projects and priorities it was raising money for in coming months and encouraged businesses and individuals to come forward if they thought they could help.

“We are already grateful to have some funds for a new club marquee, which has been greatly welcomed, and we are always looking for funding for our coaching and admin costs for carnivals and training.

There is also the cost of our travel when we are competing at events across the state.”

DADS: They rule Club stalwart, and long time committee and club member, Lee Parkes, said the club was able to train all year around because of the heated Pioneer Pool, with Squad training six days a week – across five afternoons and three mornings - and short course training held at the ARC (Aquatic and Recreation Centre) each Sunday.

Other big ticket items the club is seeking funds for include: Mr Parkes said squad swimmers were selected and trained under the experienced eye of coach Igor Demin.

He said trials for the upcoming season would start on September 16 – just over a month away – with swimmers of all age and ability encouraged to ‘come and try’ with no obligation.

Dolphins swim best times AT THE 2021 Short Course Transition Meet over the weekend, all 20 Pioneer Dolphins who attended the meet swam personal bests with an outstanding result for all swimmers.

Thirteen families made the trip up to Townsville over the weekend for the last Short Course carnival of the 2021 season.

President of Pioneer Swimming Club Damien Noon said, “These are fantastic results for our Dolphins.

“They have trained hard, some swimmers training up to six days per week. Their hard work has paid off, and we are extremely proud of all of our swimmers” he said.

Pioneer Club Coach, Igor Demin, said, “We’ve been working hard as a team and training well during winter.

“It is very rewarding to see everyone in our team swimming personal bests on the weekend.

“I’m really looking forward to the upcoming long course season and working on the momentum gained over the last couple of months,” he said.

Stevie Brand (13 years old) swam a massive PB of 2 min 23.28 seconds in her 200m breaststroke event.

Hayley Woodwell (16 years old) swam some amazing times in her first carnival.

Pioneer trio, Zanthia Noon, Ella Bounden and Jade Bounden swam a time trial at the end of the second day of competition as they were very close to state short course qualifying times.

Ella Bounden (11 years old) successfully qualified for the Qld Short Course Sprint Championships in Brisbane in two weeks time.

Gregory Skye on Sport AS Shakespeare wrote: “To be or not to be? That is the question”. That was the long-debated question hanging over the heads of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the last 18 or so months.

But, here we are mid Games in Tokyo and if it wasn’t for the ‘crowdless’ stadiums and mask wearing athletes, one could argue that for us armchair critics, it feels very much like competition as usual. But without a doubt, this year’s class of 2020 Tokyo Olympians will go down in history for their triumph in the face of adversity in the form of a global pandemic.

I’ve been particularly buoyed by our Australian Swim Team, so much so that at the tender age of 40 something, I’ve wanted to get into a pool and smash out some laps and even wondered if there is an Olympics for old people.

I know there’s the Masters Games, but you know, I want to aim higher even though I’m the furthest from an elite athlete that you could possibly come across.

Even so, as a sports fanatic, the Olympics has reignited my competitive dreams.

In amongst the competition there came the news that Brisbane will host the 2032 Olympics, which was met with mixed emotions by Queenslanders. I get that not everyone loves sport and I get that people don’t want their tax dollars spent on building sporting infrastructure when we can’t find a pothole free road in all of Mackay… but… for me, I look beyond the economic benefit vs. deficit.

I look around at our regional Queensland grass roots athletes who will have the opportunity to com-

pete not only on home soil, but Queensland soil. I mean if a 40 year old woman has been inspired by our Australian athletes, I know there will be some 10+ year olds out there thinking “I want to do that” and it’s 100 percent achievable!!

From athletes like Logan Martin from Logan QLD winning gold in the inaugural BMX Freestyle event to our very own Gold Medalist and Eimeo Surf Lifesaving Club Nipper, Meg Harris… it goes to show that with determination, hard work and the desire to be the best, we too could have the next Olympic hopeful sitting across the dinner table from us. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Mackay knows how to produce elite athletes and we have a long list of Olympians hailing for our backyard.

Mackay has some first-class sporting facilities and while this will bode well for our budding athletes in the immediate future, it will also hold us in good stead in the lead up to 2032.

Acclimatising prior to major international events is very common, so we as a community have 10 years to build on our existing infrastructure, which will not only be an asset to the wider sporting community, but will also help our cause to host an International team in the lead up to the Olympics. While the economic benefits of Mackay potentially hosting a national and / or international sporting team for acclimatising purposes would be significant, there will also be benefits for aspiring athletes. Recently the Australian Rowing Team were training in Rockhampton prior to their departure for Tokyo and I know any junior rower would have been sitting on the banks of the Fitzroy in awe of the professionalism, athleticism and speed of these athletes.

So please don’t underestimate the psychological effect on aspiring athletes of hosting a team at this level. If it lights a fire in the belly of just 1 junior who goes on to compete for Australia, it’ll be worth it!!

For me personally, I say bring on BRISBANE 2032 and I bet you $50 we’ll have a Mackay athlete competing in at least one sport.

Chris is champ PROSERPINE Golf Club’s open champion for 2021 is Chris Dunn, from the Black Springs club, who had a gross score of 104 for the 27 holes.

Chris won in a play-off with Mackay’s Kyle Dowde on the first play-off hole when he birdied it. Kyle took out the A Grade gross, from runner-up Mat Bower, Proserpine, on 107.

Nett Winner was Bruce Winn, Rockhampton, 103 from Jon Miller, Proserpine, on 104. In the B Grade, Gary Scotford was the gross winner with 121, from runner-up Chris Forrest 124.

South clash

THIS weekend will see the Men’s Champions of Champions Pairs played at Souths Suburban bowls club. Proserpine’s pairs winners Nathan Dodds and Scott Hamilton will be competing. Their first game will be against the Mackay Club Pairs champions Tony Gibson and Mick Walsh at 1.00pm Saturday.

Some local members travelled to Ingham on the weekend to contest their fours carnival. Luchie Gardel, John Fielding (Airlie Beach), Wayne Handley and Gavin Milne finished third for the weekend, only dropping one game. Other members played in the Sarina fours Carnival. On Wednesday, there were 17 players for a game of social bowls.

Top sorted

WITH only five weeks to go for Airlie Darts in the season, the top two spots seem to be all but sorted, but there’s still a lot of darts yet to be thrown. Jamie Woods continued on his merry way with a 6-1 win over Dick O’Hara, throwing his second 160 check out of the season as well as 3 x 140’s in that match. Gene Birse followed suit with his 6th bonus point win of the year defeating Aaron Paull 6-0. Ross Gallichan came from behind to beat Garry Robbie 6-4 and further establish himself in the eight. Garry hit a nice 174 in that match. Joe Wilson has a firm hold on 3rd place with a 6-0 bonus point win over Nathan O’Hara.

Umm, the running would have to be the best thing.

Probably teamwork, I think.

Center or wing attack because I get to run around a lot.

Ever since I was I grade three or two. I started with net set and go.

What’s your favourite thing about netball?

Just making friends and playing it in general.

What’s the most thing to remember on the court?

Watch your stepping and passes.

HAVING A GO: The youngsters have a nice hit out

Softballers hitting home runs IN LOCAL softball, Saturday saw the Hawks Bobs Warriors U14 team defeat Dragons Get The Power 16-10.

Bobs Warriors’ Miley Burrows slammed two home runs. Alexis Armitage, Grisel Fernandez and Cooper Maluga picked three walks each to get on base and scored runs for Warriors. Serayah Nugent was the only one to take a catch the entire game.

Akki Puramshetty and Tilly Stokes picked walks to get on base

for the Dragons. Akki and Riley Greigton were the only players to cross the home plate twice.

Both teams have been working hard with their catchers and pitchers. The results really are starting to show.

Meanwhile the T-ballers aged four to seven years are having a great time each week. Parents help the little ones all have a hit and then go out to field. Fantastic to see support from the parents for the up and coming junior players.

U12 Rookie Ball with approximately 30 players each week are right into the swing of playing with Dragons,Angels and Hawks combining together to create the fun for the kids. Most are aged 7-10, Boys and girls learning skills ready to advance up to the U14 competition.

Teams to represent Mackay have been selected and coaches appointed. Alan James has been appointed coach for U16 boys, B Men and Open Women. John Nash is assistant coach for open

women and Steven Baxter for B Men. Jass Adlam has been appointed as coach for U16 girls, Donna Reid assistant coach for U18 girls.

Abe Kilgour will once again coach the A men’s team. There will be two men’s team going away to compete at the state championship in Redlands.

Mackay Softball Association will one again host the U16 Boys State Championships September 18-20.

Anywhere, I just love it all.

Just start practising shooting or midcourt and just start running.

Massive mountain sports event Barry

Scoble On Your Bike THE cooler winter months in the Mackay region bring on mountain biking events and none better than the Mackay Mountain Marathon which was held this past weekend up the beautiful Eungella National Park.

The boys from Corry Cycles have been running this event over the last eight years and this year the trophy for the 80klm changed its name from the Platypus Trophy to the Jeff Rafferty Trophy which Jeff made himself.

Jeff, sadly passed away in 2019 but he was a stalwart of mountain biking, helping Evan and Ryan find the trails that we have the pleasure of riding in this event.

The marathon event is growing in popularity with four hundred plus competitors and boasts some of the best scenery as you look down the Pioneer Valley. Some years it is cold, raining or foggy however this year it was a pretty mild morning temperature wise with a bit of fog at the start but cleared up to be a beautiful warmish winter’s day.

The Mackay Mountain Marathon has running competitors as well as the mountain biking which is a bit funny because both groups think the other is crazy for their chosen sport.

The race starts at the Eungella cricket ground then heads along the road towards Broken river, the 15klm riders follow the bitumen to Broken River they then enter the walking trails passing by Sky Window look out and some the most amazing rain forest, even through a tree.

The walking trails are only allowed to be ridden for approved events such as this one, the trails pose a lot of obstacles and challenges like narrow tight corners with drop off on the sides and slippery moss covered concrete stairs up and down, muddy tight corners, fallen trees and logs.

THis was all while trying not to fall off and maybe catch a glimpse of the views whilst riding back towards the finish at the iconic Eungella Chalet with its breathtaking views.

The 38klm and 76klm riders turn off the road to Broken River at the Diggings Loop road and ride dirt roads once again crossing Broken River further downstream with no bridge this time; luckily this year the water was only knee deep.

After the crossing we head up four-wheel

drive tracks through dry bush land with steep rocky climbs that seem to go and on and on.

The descents are fast but become technical when at speed with large loose rocks, water bars and wash outs causing some riders to fall; this is adventure racing.

The riders then enter onto the Eungella Dam road and have a fast ride back to the old quarries and pop out just up from the Broken River Bridge and drop into the walking trails and head back to the Chalet finish line, possibly looking for a refreshment.

There were many incredible efforts from all of the riders, taking out line honours and the Jeff Rafferty Trophy this year was Ethan Weiss with an amazing time of 3hrs 43min and Anne – Marie Kehres in the women’s for the 80klm ride, the 38klm men’s Glenn Debel and women’s Kristen Rowlands, 38klm E-Bike Wolfgang Rehberg and in the 15klm Cody Weiss and women’s Alisha Rust.

Riders know how much they put themselves through to get results and everyone is trying their hardest to get PB’s and finish safely.

Congratulations to the Mackay Mountain Marathon team and everyone involved that made this event possible, we will see you all again next year.

About two years.

What’s most important to remember about netball?

To watch your feet and pass the ball to people and make sure they aren’t being defended so you can pass the ball to them.

What’s your favourite position to play?

Centre because it involves a lot of running and I like running What’s the thing you love about netball?

My teammates and being able to play and being able to be with my friends.

What would you tell other kids to get them involved?

How fun it is and if they love sports then it’s just a good sport to play.

Eva Dunwell Club: Brothers Age: 11 TEAM: The girls pose for a picture

Pearls, Galaxy in tight match THE U-12 Pearls faced Galaxy Clusters in a tight game at the weekend. Great defensive intercepts and movement in the attacking circle saw the Pearls come out victors, 18-14.

MVP was awarded to Anika Shields. Star player from Round 10 was awarded to Brina Kelly, as voted by the team.

U-14 Tsunamis took the court twice on Saturday for their round 11 and round 14 games. A hard day at the office taking on the number one and number two teams in their division.

The Tsunamis took on DAS Dynamites in their first game, the Dynamites defence proving too good with the Tsunamis going down 62-13. MVP was awarded to Rhylee Hiscox

and Ellsie Hinton. Game two saw the Tsunamis up against top of the table Galaxy Asteroids. The Tsunamis created some great plays in the centre court and managed to make a few turnovers. However, the strong Galaxy defence saw the Tsunamis defeated, 71-14. MVP was awarded to Lily Sainsbury.

Bowling with courage

By RITA HUGHES BOWLERS were amazed by the courage and stamina of Sarina’s oldest bowler Ken Willan, 96, competing and enjoying the game at the club’s Men’s Fours Carnival on the weekend.

Ken was among Sarina bowlers competing in a weekend of five games, with 28 teams involved.

Teams came from Ayr, Townsville, Proserpine, Rockhampton, Emerald, Longreach, and Mackay district clubs.

Dave Peet, Steve Ridolfi, Sean Murphy and Peter Blackburn of Mackay’s Souths Suburban won the carnival.

In ladies competition, the triples final went to Coral Brad-

ford, Jan Flanagan and Leanne McGeough who defeated Karen Baker, Carmel Kirwan and Ivy Gidding 28-18.

Brad Bettiens won the men’s B singles final, defeating Ross O`Neil 25-10.

Ladies Consistency: Penny Roots d Margaret Phillips, 11694, BB Smith d Kathy Mathews 114-96.

Men’s B Grade 4s: Jamie Adams, Allan Summerville, Rod Mills, Bryan Burrows d Ted Sands, Allan Madden, Denis Bradford, Harold Mansfield 23-17.
