COVID alert

HAMILTON Island is on COVID alert after a group of visitors were identified by Queensland Health officials to be on the island after coming from a Covid-19 hotspot in Victoria. Meanwhile, in an update, Queenslanders who have left Victoria the past 14 days are being urged to check the list of interstate exposure venues now.

MACKAY City Centre has its share of rooftop birds – lorikeets, doves, pigeons and pee wees – but it’s never seen anything like what’s flown in for the Mackay Festival of Arts.

As The Trashmen once crooned, in their 1963 hit, Surfin’ Bird, “…a bird, bird, bird, bird is the word”.

And word on the street is people love them!

The inflatable birds are more fabulous than featured, though, and they’re hanging 10 off the roofs and structures of Mackay’s Artspace, Showgrounds Big Shed, Rydges Hotel, and Bluewater Lagoon and Bluewater Quay.

Their roost in Mackay will be a brief one, however; with the flock set to take flight on July 25 – and then it will be, yes, you guessed it: Bye Bye Birdie!

The work made its world premiere at Brisbane Festival in 2020 when Brisbane Festival artistic director Louise Bezzina commissioned the colourful Messengers of Brisbane installation as a beacon of hope for the city following an extended COVID-19 lockdown.

And in the spirit of hope there are many around town hoping to see them make a seasonal festival return to our fair city!

Car fatality

A WOMAN has died in an accident on the Bruce Highway near Bowen. A 60-year-old El Arish woman died this week in a single vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway, near Bowen.

Preliminary information indicates the vehicle the woman was driving was travelling south when it left the highway around 10.30am crashing into a gully.

The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Job skills

THE Morrison Government is calling for expressions of interest to join its Local Jobs and Skills Taskforce for the Mackay Employment Region. It is one of 26 new Taskforces being established across the country as part of the Government’s $276 million Local Jobs Program. Member for Dawson George Christensen said the taskforce will help identify key employment and training priorities for the region.

Businesses brace for potential strike

By MEREDITH PAPAS MACKAY businesses are taking a deep breath and bracing for potential strike action by one of the country’s biggest trucking companies.

National action by Toll truck drivers is becoming increasingly likely as enterprise bargaining negotiations between Transport Workers Union delegates and Toll management representatives.

And Toll is not the only company in the crosshairs with StarTrack, FedEx and Linfox all locked in similar stalemates.

Throughout the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, the companies are responsible for the transportation of stock and supplies for hundreds of small local businesses – all of which would be hard hit by strike action. And that’s not to men-

tion the tens of thousands of deliveries for online shopping, medical supplies and transplant body parts, postal, food and other consumables which are delivered throughout the regions daily.

Mark Mifsud, of Mifsud’s Fresh, is one of the fortunate ones – or at least, he hopes so.

He has contracted the same trucking company to supply stock to his business for about the past 20 years and he’s pretty confident that even if the country’s major trucking players fell into strike action, he’d be better off than most.

That said, if the strike was to spread further the implications would be dire, and he said he felt for those businesses who stood to lose out as a result.

“If our trucking company couldn’t deliver to us, then we would be out of stock

in probably two days and we wouldn’t last a week,” Mr Mifsud said.

“And then there are the businesses, restaurants, corner stores, sporting clubs that we supply to – they would be impacted as well.”

Mr Mifsud said the foundation of the 20-year relationship his business had built with their trucking contractor was the mutual regard they had for the drivers and their safety and wellbeing.

“These guys are North Queenslanders and they’ve been in business for about 30 years – and we have been with them for probably 20 or so of those,” Mr Mifsud said “We have a very good understanding that if a driver looks tired or there is an issue, then we let them know and make sure they’re looked after.

“The simple fact of the matter is, you cannot be in business if you don’t look after your people. You have to look after your people.”

TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine said Toll workers had kept North Queensland well stocked throughout the pandemic.

“They support Queensland’s farming supply chains and keep communities connected with essential supplies like fuel, food and medicine,” Mr Kaine said.

“But now their jobs are under attack, despite the record profits made by the wealthy retailers whose goods Toll workers carry.

“Workers have been left with no choice but to pursue strike action to protect their families’ future.”

Mr Kaine said Toll sought to bring in a fresh workforce, and outside hire on more precarious work arrangements, with worse pay and conditions.

He said the full-time workers would be those most at risk by the move.

“These are workers who’ve given years of loyalty to the company and proudly supported Australian communities.

“They will be pushed out or forced onto lower wages and less safe conditions.

“Transport workers do not take a decision to strike lightly.

“They understand how important their jobs are, and will make responsible decisions.”

For he’s a jolly good centenarian TALK to anyone about Henry Kingston and they’ll tell you about two things: His laugh and his big personality!

And when you meet him, you can see they are spot on!

Henry turned 100 at the weekend and thanks to family and friends from throughout the state – and even a few from interstate – he had a ball!

“Well, yeah, I guess it is a bit of a milestone I have reached,” he said.

“When we pulled up in the car (arriving at his surprise birthday lunch at Mackay Marina on Sunday) I thought, ‘who are all these people? I think I’ll go home!”.

“What a lovely surprise though.”

Thankfully, Henry stayed the distance at his party – which was the second in his honour, after another surprise gathering at his home at Cascade Gardens.

During the celebrations, Mayor Greg Williamson paid tribute to Henry, reading tributes from Mackay Regional Council, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Governor General David Hurley and Queen Elizabeth.

The latter attracted some banter from the crowd, in light of the recent passing of Prince Phillip.

“You might be in with a chance there, Henry,” came a call from a younger member of the crowd.

The comment was met with a nod, a knowing wink and a smile.

And his secret? Well, if laughter is the best medicine, Henry must be living proof!

Countdown for Whitsundays NINE weeks and counting! The Whitsundays Arts Festival (WAF) Committee is delighted to report continued financial and in-kind support for the 2021 Festival taking place from 17-19 September on the Airlie Beach foreshore.

WAF successfully procured grants from Festivals Australia and the Regional Arts Fund, both Commonwealth programs.

These grants go a long way in supporting the new performing arts component and the fabulous lantern installation and community workshops. University students nominated

CQUNIVERSITY’S vocational education and training excellence has once again been recognised with five students nominated across two regions in the 2021 Regional Queensland Training Awards.

CQUniversity has four finalists in the Central Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards, in the categories of Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year, ATSI Student of the Year and Equity VET Student of

the Year. Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year finalist, Jack Mitchell of Mackay, studied a Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade as a Fitter and Turner, and is employed by Jennmar Australia.

Certificate III in Business student Litia Pitt of Moranbah is nominated in the ATSI Student of the year, as is Certificate II in Engineering student, Latitia Briggs. Litia works for Isaac Regional Council, while Latitia is

employed by BHP Operations Services.

Mackay Regional Council employee Liticha McMullen was nominated in the Equity VET Student of the Year category, for her efforts while studying a Certificate IV in Human Resources. CQUni also has a finalist in the North Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards, with student Benjamin Jones bveing nominated.

Bendigo provides scholarships BENDIGO Bank Community Bank Sarina has awarded three CQUniversity Mackay students a career boost with $16,000 in scholarships to support their studies.

The students were recognised as the 2021 Community Bank Sarina CQUniversity Higher Education and Apprentice Scholarship recipients at a ceremony held on the CQUniversity Mackay campus.

Bachelor of Accounting student Elleni Williams and Bachelor of Science (Honours) student Stephanie McBride will each receive $6000 over the three years of their degrees as recipients of the Higher Education Scholarships.

“To be awarded this scholarship is a huge honour

and privilege. It is also a great responsibility to be the recipient of this scholarship as it can be used as a platform to share my journey and encourage others to find theirs,” Stephanie said.

“This scholarship will not only assist with my tuition fees, but also serve as a strong motivator to encourage me to keep pushing through with my study and career goals.”

Elleni agreed and said receiving the scholarship motivates her to achieve more and work harder through her studies. The scholarship definitely helps to minimise the financial stress that goes with a university degree,” she explained.

Historic study for Islander community

By DAVID LORNIE ACADEMICS and university students are currently in Mackay to study the history of the region’s South Sea Islander population.

The project, Archaeology Collections and South Sea Islander Lived Identities, is looking into Islander histories and aims to raise awareness about the community’s past in Queensland society.

It is hoped this will contribute to a sense of Islander identity, both now and going forward.

The group has been working closely with Mackay’s Islander community for the last four years in order to discover Australian South Sea Islander lived identities.

Last week, the researchers were at the Old Homebush Mill, a late 19th-early 20th century sugar mill. They were studying workers’ cottages, particularly in the areas where Australian South Sea Islanders had lived.

Dr Geraldine Mate from the Queensland Museum, who is a lead worker on the project, explained its scope.

“We’re doing this through three different things. One is around archaeology, one is around understanding objects and the other is about cultural landscapes,” she said.

“As part of the project, we’ve been working to understand the important places to the community and looking at places where maybe we can do some mapping or do some archaeological work to

investigate more about the ways South Sea Islander people lived in the past.”

Current public health issues have not made it easy for the team, with lead archaeologist Dr James Flexner locked down in Sydney for the duration of the dig.

“It’s been a bit of a journey, particularly with the pandemic interrupting all of last year’s fieldwork and impacting this year’s

fieldwork as well,” Dr Mate said.

“We did excavations this week at Homebush but didn’t identify what we were looking for.

“But we’ve also been doing landscape mapping while we’ve been up here and we’ve been doing community workshops, looking at things like objects that are meaningful to people in terms of exploring identity.”

Offer to help find orphan graves

By JOHN BELL A KIND offer has been made to find the unmarked graves of 19 babies and very young children buried at Bucasia.

These babies and very young children were buried opposite Mackay’s St Josephs Orphanage on grassland next to the beach.

This thoughtful offer has been made by Mackay geophysical contractors, Russell and Charlotte Swanson, who have already found an unmarked grave elsewhere in Mackay.

dar is widely used by police and archeologists to find underground features without disturbing the ground.

“I will go out there and donate my time over a weekend to find them,” Russell Swanson said.

“It would be nice to mark these children’s graves, so people know what they went through, even if it was 135 years ago.

“People need to hear and read about their lives. It’s a honour to help and to enable people to respect them.”

Russell’s wife Charlotte added

that she had done an internet search and done a lot of reading about the deaths of Mackay’s 19 very young children.

“These babies and childrens’ graves do need to be found and it’s a sad story that almost no one knew about, which has to be and must be told,” Charlotte said.

“I also think that it is very sad that 10 more children died within six months of being transferred away from Mackay’s orphanage at Bucasia. A further four children died at the Mackay hospital.

“I for one would like to solve the mysteries about these poor chil-

dren and my heart goes out to them, especially as their parents didn’t want them.

“My heart also goes out to the nuns who tried to care for them when there was nothing they could do and had to watch and bury so many of their very young charges.”

Mackay historian and archivist Doug Petersen has spent years completing detailed research and has published a book about Mackay’s St Joseph’s Orphanage and the St Joseph’s cemetery across the road, which cared for 126 children between 1879 and 1885.

Black Throated Finch under threat THE beautiful Black Throated Finch will be the subject of a presentation by researcher Juan Mula Laguna at Mackay Environment Centre on Wednesday evening (July 28, 2021) at 6pm.

In 2019 the Black Throated Finch was declared Australian Bird of the Year after voting by bird lovers all around the country, since then its population has plummeted.

The bird came to national prominence when the Queensland Government rejected Adani’s Black Throated Finch management plan after strong advice from scientists that the plan would

push the bird further towards extinction. The bird has been driven close to extinction by destruction of its habitat. Over the past 20 years about 80 percent of the bird’s remaining habitat has been lost to development. Its largest remaining home is at the Adani Carmichael mine site. A recent survey of bird numbers at the site showed a decrease of 82 percent in the population.

“Our community was outraged when the Queensland Government approved Adani’s flawed management plan. It now appears that our worst fears are coming true,” said Mackay Conservation Group campaign manager, Sunny

Hungerford. “This presentation by PhD candidate Juan Mula Laguna will provide detailed information about the Black Throated Finch, and what it needs to survive.

“Once people hear about the plight of this unique Australian species they will understand why its habitat must be protected. Extinction is forever. We must not lose this beautiful bird.”

The presentation will be at the Mackay Environment Centre and also available on Zoom.

HISTORY: A 1901 certificate of residency for an Islander closely with Mackay’s islander population, many of whom are descended from the original sugar industry labourers who were brought as cheap workers from places like East New Britain, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

“The Australian South Sea Islander community has been really welcoming to us and we’re working with them,” Dr Mate said.

“So it’s about what the community is saying is important to them, the stories that are import-

ant to them. Outputs are important to them in terms of being able to pass on stories to younger generations in different ways – whether it’s through school-based material or through online or or publications and so on.

“And I think the community – and I can’t speak for them – from what people have said to us, is that getting the history out there and known is a really important part of this project.”

Rehab roadwork REHABILITATION works are planned for popular back road Glenella-Richmond Road. Mayor Greg Williamson said this section of road between Mackay-Habana Road and Holts Road needed repair.

“Council understands that the section of road is a popular travel route as it provides an alternative to the, at times, busy Mackay-Bucasia Road (a state-controlled road),” Mayor Williamson said. “As part of the upcoming rehabilitation works, the road will also be widened and culverts works completed,” he said.

On average, 2500 motorists use Glenella-Richmond Road daily. Council crews will be on-site from mid-August until December. with this road closed to through traffic for about five months, weather permitting. Mayor Williamson said provisions had been made to ensure that the 2021 Hand Heart Pocket River 2 Reef Ride wouldn’t be significantly affected.

Punched in face A 24-year-old South Mackay man has been charged after a man was allegedly punched in the face last night in Mackay City.

It will be alleged at 9.05pm a man was standing in the taxi rank on Wood Street when he was approached by a 24-year-old man, who then punched the man in the face.

As the victim fell to the ground, police will allege the was punched in the face again.

The 24-year-old man then ran from the scene.

Police located the man nearby on Gregory Street, and after a brief struggle with officer, he was restrained and arrested.

The victim was transported to hospital by Queensland Ambulance Service for treatment to facial injuries.

The 24-year-old man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and obstructing police in the performance of their duties.

POWER: Bikes lined up, ready to roar

Bike ride still on WELL, this is what you have all been waiting for.

After a successful group ride and drive last year to Midge Pt, we have decided to make it an annual event.

So, this year we have decided to go a little further north.

We will head up to Conway Beach, then up to the Shute Harbour lookout, then back to Flametree Beach then finally the Whitsunday Sailing Club for lunch.

Heading back home is at your own leisure.

This isn’t a race, this is purely a social/leisure ride.

Lock in August 1, 2021 into your calendars. If the weather doesn’t play our game, we will postpone the event. We will begin our journey at 8.30am sharp from the old info centre, Nebo Road, Mackay this year and we are happy to pull up at the Conningsby Servo, Kolijo Servo or Calen to pick up anyone else that wishes to join us from those spots.

Even though we call it a ride, people who wish to drive their cars are also welcome. We appreciate there are people who prefer four wheels over two.

We are also happy for learners to come along for the ride as long as they have organised their own escorts.

Creek project

MACKAY Regional Council Mayor Greg Williamson said weather permitting, works will start between Schofield and Finlayson streets to protect and stabilise the Seaforth Creek.

“A massive 900 cubic metres of rock will be used to complete these protection works on Seaforth Creek to help stop erosion,” Mr Williamson said.

“A total length of 165 metres of bank protection in this second stage includes extending the rock protection on either end of work done in 2017.

“This will provide greater protection from erosion for the creek bank and council assets and some trees in the work area will be removed and replaced with more appropriate species.

“The works will be completed Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 6.30pm and on Saturday, from 7am to 5pm, Traffic control will be in place for the duration of the works.”

Maddie plea The Member for Whitsunday, Amanda Camm MP, is calling on the Queensland Government to reunite Maddie Newton with her family after the tragic loss of her father in the Bruce Highway crash last week. “I am calling on the Queensland Government to prioritise a fully vaccinated nurse to be reunited with her family and be prioritised for exemption above sport stars,” she said. Meanwhile, police are calling for dash-cam footage and witnesses after Maddie’s father, 60, was killed in an accident on the Bruce Highway near Rise and Shine Road. Hes died following a three-vehicle crash in Pindi Pindi on Friday, July 16.

Seaforth hub set to go ahead No offences THE detailed design of Seaforth’s planned Esplanade recreation hub is expected to be completed within weeks and construction will start next year.

JFP Urban Design Consultants were appointed by the Mackay Regional Council in May 2021 to work on the initial masterplan for the Seaforth Esplanade Reserve.

Mackay Regional Council’s successful consultation has been welcomed by the Seaforth community.

Association President Lyn Prince said the Hibiscus Coast Progress Association and Sport Association had nothing but praise for community consultation and couldn’t fault the Mackay Regional Council’s interaction.

“We’ve had half a dozen interaction meetings and it was the total opposite of ‘this is what your going to get’,” Lyn smiled.

“Instead, we had a really good working relationship or a team effort with the Council, where we were invited to throw up all our ideas.

“Our community had a really hands-on involvement and when we said when we didn’t like this or that, Council officers asked us what we would like instead.

“Landscaping on Seaforth’s foreshore was a real issue and where we would like to place things like footpaths, which were resolved – even before the final plan.

“So we got most of what we asked for and you couldn’t get a better Council to work with.”

Mayor Greg Williamson explained that Council will transform the Seaforth Esplanade into a vibrant and exciting space where residents and visitors can spend quality time with their families.

“The new Seaforth Recreation Hub will showcase Seaforth’s swimming enclosure as its centrepiece,” Greg Williamson said.

AROUND 1000 people turned out to watch the Mackay Cutters take on the Norths Devils over the weekend. Local police were pleased with the behaviour of patrons at the event with no offences detected within the gates. A number of traffic offences were detected, including: • Three infringement notices for speeding offences • One infringement notice for an unregistered motor vehicle • One infringement notice for exceed carrying capacity after a passenger was located in the boot of a vehicle • One infringement notice for an expired licence.

Mayor Williamson said the plan is to create an all-abilities water play area to replace the old wading pool.

“This will include an oversized splash pad area with water jets and sprays which will be modelled on local marine life and corals, plus a 15cm shallow pool which will replicate ocean tidal movements.

“The new customised shelters will help shade the water area and traditional play equipment.”

Vehicle damaged Clear, robust vision AN UNKNOWN person has damaged the front drivers side door of a white 1993 Mitsubishi Triton utility which was parked in the driveway of an address on Elizabeth Street, North Mackay at about 12.30pm on July 17.

At this time, the residents of the home heard the engine of the Mitsubishi Triton start up, followed by a loud bang.

The residents moved from inside of the house to the front yard and observed the Triton wedged into their front fence.

They also observed an unknown white sedan quickly driving away from the area.

Anyone who may have information about this matter is encouraged to contact police as soon as possible.

If you witness any suspicious behaviour, regardless of the time of day, please report the matter as soon as possible.

IDENTIFYING a clear and robust vision for our Greater Whitsunday region was the focus of a workshop hosted by Regional Development Australia Mackay Isaac Whitsunday (RDA MIW) earlier this week.

As part of the Australian Government’s commitment toward long-term regional development, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications contracted RDA MIW to work with regional stakeholders to create the region’s Development Strategy and Roadmap.

RDA MIW has received support through a working group guiding the development of the Strategy and Roadmap.

The first workshop in this two-part series set the scene, with stakeholders putting forward a regional vision. Attendees were presented with information and context of economic priorities, and had the opportunity to offer their input.

BETWEEN 5pm on July 16 and 4am on July 17, a home on Baker Street, Bowen was broken into. Entry was gained into the home after damage was caused to a side window. Once inside the home, a bedroom was searched and car keys were taken from a bedside table. The keys were used to steal a silver Toyota Hilux utility which was parked at the address. The stolen Hilux was found at 11.20am on July 17, on a dirt track at Gordons Creek, Bowen destroyed by fire.

Police are appealing for anyone who has information about the offense to come forward.

HOW many superheroes are there in Mackay?

The answer? Lots.

You know what, we are all superheroes in our own way. We have Mum and Dad superheroes, volunteer superheroes, people who cook the BBQ at Mackay Gymnastics heroes, some who drive buses for Central School on their excursions.

There are so many.

Last weekend there were dozens of people dressed as superheroes down at Mackay Hockey for the big Saturday Mental Health Round.

All men’s teams had specially made superhero designed jerseys, kids wore their favourite costumes and you know what, it started conversations about mental health.

Every year we become more and more open in discussing it and days like this makes it even better and easier. Plus it gives us the opportunity to

see who actually fits into their jerseys and who doesn’t. That’s for another discussion, just as I put down my second doughnut while typing this story.

A few weeks ago there were a bunch of superheroes who went and played rugby league against a Townsville side. I went down and waved them all off at BB Print Stadium with Marty Bella leading the chorus and I’ve got to say, superheroes was an understatement. They are all heroes in my eyes.

Have a think about who is a hero to you right now? Your kids? Your parents? Your partner?

Maybe your next door neighbour who yells out gudday on a Saturday afternoon as you’re mowing your quarter acre in Andergrove. They are all heroes.

If you can’t think of a hero in your life right now, take a walk inside and have a look in the bathroom mirror. See that person? Yep. That’s you.

One amazing superhero and don’t you forget it.

Now put down the muffin, roll up your sleeves and give yourself a pat on the back. Just don’t pull a muscle doing it. We’re not getting any younger.

I WAS listening to a program recently about early education and the importance of allowing young children to explore their creativity and imagination as part of their development and experiential learning about the world around them.

They were talking particularly about clay and art work and the message that came across was that you can learn a lot about the child not only from how they engage with the activity but also what they create.

They also described that, up to a certain age, children engaging in these activities just start with a blank page or piece of clay without any external influence or suggestions and go from there.

They don’t compare what they create with others or judge it as good or bad, artistic or not, they are just enjoying the experience and creating work that reflects their imagination in that moment.

Around the age of five is when self-esteem starts to develop as part of our overall self-concept and we may become more critical of ourselves and our abilities as we start to compare ourselves to others, particularly if we feel we come up short. If that continues, then by the time we reach adolescence, our self-esteem based on experiences, external influences and pressure is creating an internal dialogue that is likely to be negative and we then tend to judge ourselves harshly.

Anyway, these concepts have got me thinking the last few weeks (and in part as to why I was indisposed and having to miss last fortnights’ column), so I thought we’d look into these themes a bit this week.

“Cradle to Grave” (or even “Cradle to Cradle”) is an approach that should be adopted more fulsomely when it comes to both our health and education systems.

Our body includes the mouth and the mind, and it comes in many forms. Properly funding Medicare to include dental and mental care is essential and the budget should be given the teeth (pardon the pun) to tackle these issues in a full and holistic way.

When it comes to the NDIS, I am so sick of hearing lately about its’ budget as “blowing out”. Bullsh*t! If that what it costs to give people comfort, capacity, and dignity to lead their best lives then so be it.

No one bats an eyelid when we spend many

factors more billions of dollars on industrial death machines like fighter jets and submarines.

On education, from early care right through primary and high school, to VET (TAFE) and university should be fully publicly funded.

This is a no-brainer. (Awesome pun number two!)

Starting early is the key (“First Five Forever”), then whatever education journey is best suited to an individual, it should be supported to be realised. In turn our entire society benefits.

A good start will be to redress the massive disparity in federal funding of tens of billions of dollars between public and private schools.

And how can certain private schools claim and keep millions in Jobkeeper when primary school teachers pay for supplies out of their own pockets and thousands of uni staff are sacked and excluded from any support?

These basic things are investments not costs. Note the difference.

“But how will we pay for it all?”, I hear you cry. There are 122 billionaires in this country who have more money than could be possibly spent in many lifetimes.

I reckon they could stump up a bit more tax to cover it. And don’t forget about those

tax dodging multi-national corporations. No life or civilisation can prosper (or even exist) without a functioning natural world. So with the ocean literally on fire and Germany being being washed away from two month’s worth of rain in just two days, it’s good to hear that the new chief of AEMO (who runs our national electricity grid) is looking to have it able to run on periods of 100 percent renewables by just 2025.

A big step in the right direction for action on climate.

Finally, since we last spoke NAIDOC week occurred with the usual platitudes from state and federal governments.

Maybe in Queensland, restoring the Native Title that was extinguished for Adani, and nationally, implementing the Uluru Statement From The Heart are tangible actions that “Just Tell the Truth” and “Heal Country”.

human, it’s easy to form judgments about situations, events and other people based on our personal view of the world through our unique version of reality and what we believe is right and true or not.

While passing judgment may not always be harmful in its intent it is frequently negative and therefore has the potential to be damaging to ourselves and others - particularly if we become stubborn and inflexible in our view.

So, we all do it at times but why do we judge? It can be because we want to make sense of something but only have certain information to go on, so our brain fills in the gaps and leads us to an assumption.

The situation, event or person is something that challenges our own thinking and perception of reality or has us feel threatened in some way. If we stop for a moment to consider what it is for us, we may realise that most of the time we know very little about what’s really happening, we may only have fragments of information or have overheard or misheard something all of which may lead to misinterpretation and incorrect conclusions.

We all struggle to understand ourselves and our motives at times, so judging others and what they are doing or not doing is absurd. If you find yourself making a judgement then it’s worth reminding yourself that we don’t see people as they are, we see them as we are (and vice versa), therefore whatever you are judging them about is something you need to pay attention to in yourself.

Challenging? Yes and also worth keeping in mind for next time.

Feds looking after casuals George

DID you know that casuals can convert to permanent work after one year, thanks to changes made by the Morrison Liberal National Government in March this year?

This includes miners who are employed as casuals.

At my insistence, the Morrison Liberal National Government put draft laws before the parliament as early as 2019 to allow casual miners to convert to permanent work.

Sadly, those draft laws didn’t get through the parliament because Labor blocked them in the Senate. Thankfully, a second attempt has seen the laws pass parliament.

Now, if a casual worker is doing the same work as a permanent worker for more than 12 months, their employer must write to them offering them permanency of work. There are only two exceptions to this: (1) if the employer is a small business and (2) if the employer has a valid reason not to offer permanency (such as the casual worker is working on a time-limited

project). There have been many myths around this issue of casualisation which need to be cleared up.

The first is around this new law itself. Some have suggested that unscrupulous employers will be able to sack casual workers before their 12 months is up, but this is wrong as such actions could constitute unfair dismissal.

In recent years, Fair Work has made such rulings relating to workers in similar circumstances.

There is also the partisan claim that casualisation has been allowed to proliferate under the Liberal National Government.

This is patently wrong as the current Fair Work laws were created by the Labor Party.

These Labor laws are what big companies have been using to keep casual workers on for years on end, essentially doing full-time work.

Despite that, the rate of casual workers as a proportion of all workers has remained steady for more than 20 years, and the most recent rate is lower than at any point under the former Labor Government’s time in office.

Far from encouraging casualisation, the Morrison Liberal National Government has delivered to casual employees a new, universal, legislative pathway to permanent employment.

Watch when shopping, as there are some brands that use the word “compostable” creatively.

They basically need you to jump through hoops to deal with their “privately compostable take somewhere special we don’t have time to take them to” instructions.

As you would by now have noticed, we are all about simplicity.

The ideas we share have to be able to be incorporated into a busy household and schedule or they

just aren’t going to happen.

What is compostable packaging?

Compostable items are made from biodegradable materials.

These break down into viable nutrients and improve soil quality.

Who doesn’t want that?

Some biodegradable packaging when broken down, becomes micro plastics.

These will still take more years than in our life time to break down. Clearly this is not optimal.

Look for the word COMPOSTABLE not the word bio-

degradable. Everywhere in our homes, lies an opportunity to shop consciously for goods with compostable packaging.

Lunch boxes, sandwich coverings, shipping mailers, laundry detergent boxes, cling wrap, baking paper and dozens of other items now offer a compostable option.

Are we missing something important? Let us know.

It’s hard to fathom that we are making packaging that lasts beyond a lifetime for products we use in some cases for just minutes.

Cannot afford a strike AS WE continue through the throes of COVID-19 induced economic whitewash, our Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday businesses have continued to show a degree of mettle and innovation that has made us the envy of other regions throughout the country – and indeed, the world.

Certainly, in these regions, we were largely spared the chaos and downturn which befell others, and the reasons for this are as diverse as they are argued.

Throughout the pandemic we have relied on our personal and business supply chains to keep our own wheels moving.

So, the risk of this now being brought into doubt – and the widespread impacts which could be brought to bear if that risk becomes a reality – is not something we can relegate to the “not now, too busy” basket.

Toll is currently at the centre – and leading the fray – around enterprise bargaining agreement negotiations with Transport Workers Union (TWU), but other transport heavyweights, StarTrack, FedEx and Linfox are also in the ring, poised at various rounds of the bout.

What’s scary, is that the TWU has lodged its application for Protected Action with the Australian Fair Work Commission and within two weeks we could be seeing the first of these big companies on strike.

Things could get ugly.

RHM (Red Heads Matter) is about to steamroll cities and towns throughout Australia, and the Mackay region won’t be spared.

Simmering tensions will intensify and get red hot.

We’re up for a blue. If you thought BLM caused a stir, wait until RHM ignites the flame.

Even small rural towns will be affected because redheads make up two per cent of the popu-lation so any town with at least 50 people is likely to be strongly represented by at least one fiery fraternity member.

You see, until now people with red hair — gingers, ginger nuts, carrot tops, Fanta pants, or rangas as they are referred to — have suffered the taunts and humiliation in silence, preferring love to war.

I was an overtly proud member of the ranga club until my hair divorced me. Now I’m a paid up member of the Society of Skinheads.

My TV cartoon hero, Cartman, founded the Ginger Separatist Movement in South Park about 20 years ago but it took the mushrooming offence industry to build its influence here in Oz, and rangas have finally said enough is enough.

Oh please, don’t play innocent with me.

Don’t pretend you didn’t know the word “ranga” was derived from Orangutan, and/or from the Latin “Orange Utan” meaning red pubic hair.

Everyone knows that.

So be honest.

“What? Kiss a ginger?” he exclaimed.

“My old man used to threaten me with a good kick up the ginger if I didn’t behave.”

Then he told the old public service joke: “He sat on his ginger all day, doing nothing, but he did nothing so well he got promoted.”

That sort of comment makes me reminisce about the “good old days” when people had fun with our language.

Ginger was an abbreviation of ginger ale, and became rhyming slang for “tail”.

It was first recorded in 1955 in J. Morrison’s book Black Cargo: “Stone the crows! I’m sitting here with fifty thousand bags of flour under my ginger.”

Of course freckles go hand-in-hand with red hair so that word too is often used to refer to the rear end of the anatomy.

Way back in the 70s comedian Barry Humphries said, “I too believed that the sun shone out of Gough’s freckle.”

On second thoughts, maybe I won’t start working in the offence industry.

Peter said that offering a good price was one thing, but he credits CMR’s success to the level of service he and his team provide.

“You have to give good service and have the equipment to give good service.

“We didn’t start with much, but as the business grew, we made sure our equipment grew to continue that high level of service.

Now we have forklifts, four excavators, two semi-trailers (one with a tipper) and four other trucks.

“We have more than 300 bins to collect the metal now. When I first came to Mackay I used to weld them by myself”.

Peter then said that the level of service a business can provide also comes down to the people you have working for you.

GOOD PEOPLE “You’ve got to have good people working for you.

“I’m pleased to say that we have, and have had for some time, a good crew of people. We have our guys here who have been here almost as long as I have, around a decade.

“We try and look after our workers. The company has done well, and it’s done well because

of the people we have working for us.

CMR’s General Manager Wayne Hennessy is one of those people, having worked for the company for more than seven years.

“He looks after his people, he looks after his customers and he looks after the community. He’d give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. That’s the kind of guy he is.

Something you may not know about Peter.

WOOD CHOPPER Peter used to be a competitive wood chopper, representing Queensland in chopping. He would regularly compete in the big shows including the EKKA and the Sydney Show. After he stopped chopping competitively, he gave back to the sport for many years as a steward.

CMR is fast becoming a family legacy, with three of Peter’s children working in the business.

“Ronny my son, Gary my sonin-law and Patricia my daughter all have roles to play.”

CMR isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

“12 years in business here in Mackay and we’re still growing, we must be doing something right,” Peter added. “If we pick up eight tonnes of material from someone, they get paid for eight tonnes.

“It’s not rocket science.

“There is no magic in running a business, it’s just hard work.”

Sugar heads up

STRONG pricing and a collective of world economic drivers are singing a sweeter song for cane growers throughout the Mackay, Isaac, Whitsunday regions.

The Oct21 ICE 11 raw sugar contract bounced off a low of 16.73 USc/ lb last Tuesday before trading up over 100 points to a high of 17.78 USc/lb on Friday, closing last week up 2.5 percent.

Brazilian crop progress for the second half of June was released by UNICA (the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association) last Monday, with cane crush figures coming in above expectations due to quality production weeks in the Sao Paulo state.

Cane harvested this season to date was reported to be 210.9 million tonnes compared to 230.4 million tonnes at the same time last year, with sugar produced at 12.3 million tonnes compared to 13.3 million tonnes in 2020.

The Indian Sugar Millers Association released its first estimate of the 2021/22 Season Indian crop at a forecast 31 million tonnes of sugar. This is virtually the same as their 2020/21 Season production but still lower than the market consensus.

Just as ICE 11 sugar prices have been range bound for the past two months,

the net speculator position has followed a very similar pattern, trapped in a 185,000 – 250,000 lot net-long position. The latest Commitment of Traders report dated 13 July reported specs reduced their position to 194,000 lots net long.

Markets continued to trade in a risk-off tone last week as the US Dollar strengthened and the Aussie Dollar (AUD) underperformed after the extended Sydney lockdown was expanded to Melbourne. The AUD slipped from its high of 75.83 US cents last Tuesday down to a low on Friday of 73.92

US cents. For the third month in a row, the US consumer price index (CPI) was much higher than expected, printing at 0.9 percent month on month – more than double the market consensus.

Almost half of this figure can be attributed to a 10.5 percent month-onmonth increase in used car prices which are now statistically 45 percent higher than at this point last year.

Despite the US Fed continuously reassuring that this inflation is only transitory and is expected, markets remain fearful that it could be more enduring and lead to an earlier interest rate hike.

SUGAR prices headed north this week, tipping $524.85 yesterday.

With this year’s Crush gaining momentum throughout the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions, Mackay Sugar and Wilmar factories are going well and reporting strong CCS and tonnages.

Mackay Sugar crushed a total of 216,287tonnes last week with an average CCS of 13.13.

The mills respectively crushed 63,198tonnes at Farleigh with CCS at 13.25, 90,097tonnes at Marian with 12.81, and 62,991tonnes at Racecourse with 13.48 CCS. Wilmar’s Proserpine Mill crushed 88,633tonnes of cane last week and averaged 13.63 CCS. Cane Supply Manager Tony Marino said throughout put for the mill was above budget and field conditions had been favourable to harvesting, shoring up a good supply of cane to the mills.

Plane Creek Mill crushed 63,803tonnes of cane in the past week, with CCS averaging about 12.75.

Some factory issues slowed production throughout the week, and overnight drizzles and showers during Wednesday resulted in a five-hour cane supply shortfall.

eCup a great solution to plastics ban

TO TACKLE increasing pollution and the environmental damage associated with plastics, Queensland is set to become the second state after South Australia to ban single-use plastics.

From September 1 this year, the sale and supply of single use plastic cutlery, straws, plates and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups will be banned. It will be illegal for businesses, restaurants, cafes, takeaway food shops and supermarkets to supply and sell these items.

Any plastics item that is 100 per cent compostable will be exempted from the ban.

The implication for our sporting, social and wedding industries is enormous. Having a beer at the footy currently involves a single use plastic cup. After every home game for the Mackay Cutters hundreds of throw-away plastics cups will end up in landfill or even the ocean.

Careers and study expo MACKAY Northern Beaches State High School is set to host the 2021 James Cook University Career Connect.

The event is being held at the school on August 4 from 11am until 6pm and is open to both school students and the public. JCU Career Connect aims to promote employment and study opportunities for students as well as people looking for a career change or to re-enter the workforce.

The event will allow businesses, training organisations and tertiary education providers to showcase their organisations and the employment and training opportunities that are available in the Mackay community.

JCU Career Connect spokesperson Tracey Hocking said, “We realise that some young people have to relocate to pursue their chosen career path but all too often we see them making this decision without realising what is available right here in Mackay.

When I was studying my HR Degree. I also completed a major in Human Relations and Communications, and it was through this course I learnt some life changing knowledge.

One of which was the scientific differences between the male and female brain function but that is not what this column is about (and that combined with generational and temperament differences deserves a whole column to itself).

Obviously in this course we studied communication, and despite this, for years I thought that listening was merely another communication skill. After many years of specialising in people, I am now convinced it is, in fact, a gift. So many people don’t do it well. I had to practice this.

Being an extrovert, I often think through my words and as those who know me can attest, I always have a lot of words to speak. What I have learnt in my wisdom and maturity, is that you can’t talk and listen at the same time.

You need to calm your thoughts, stop your words, and truly listen. When you do this, a world of opportunity opens that wasn’t there before!

For many years, I have been attending business networking events with relative ease (give

or take a few awkward moments) and people have asked me “How do you do that? How do you enter a room of people you don’t know?” I have always told them to take three open questions with you and remember that people enjoy talking about what they do.

My present-day self would say “Introduce yourself and then ‘listen’ to what they say. The conversation will flow, and it will be through genuine interest that it develops!

You cannot listen to what the other person is saying when you are trying to remember the next question you had stored to ask. Happy listening, people.

She’s young, energetic and caring TRACING FACES The stories behind our local region’s real people THE last thing on the mind of most 13 year olds is starting a business, but Jacinta Larsson is not your average teen.

She has been hard at work, not only developing a business but helping others in the community as well. It was her community spirit which brought Beachy Designs to life.

Through her business making and selling scrunchies, Jacinta has helped out charities such as Kids Helpline and Mackay Animal Rescue Society. Her desire to help others is truly inspiring.

With this in mind, Mackay Local News journalist Jacob Cumner knocked on Jacinta’s door with a head full of questions.

JC: How long have you wanted to start your own business?

JL: A few years.

JC: What inspired you to start your own business?

JL: My Dad had his own business for my whole life until we moved to Mackay last year.

My Mum also has her own business and is very creative and she gave me the idea to make and sell scrunchies.

JL: Around five months. I started in March 2021 just before the anti-bullying-day campaign.

Sarina Show set to be a real rip-roarer THERE is nothing like a country show and the Sarina Show has made a name for itself as one of the region’s favourite events on the showtime calendar.

Sarina Show President Mal Langdon said this year’s event was shaping up to be one of the biggest events in the show’s history, especially in light of the hiatus taken by most events last year in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Show Society committee, led by Mr Langdon and vice presidents, Ron Gurnett and Steve Wesche, have worked hard to make the most of the break, ready to launch into what promises to be a new beginning for the popular event.

Some things, though, will never change and they

are still at the heart of the event, which will be held on July 31 and August 1.

Once again, the Show will coincide with the annual Sarina Show Society Rodeo, held in partnership with the Central Rodeo Cowboys Association.

There will also be the combined fine arts pavilion, ring events, woodchop, sideshow alley, prime cattle, stud cattle, entertainment and a bar!

One of the traditional mainstays of the Sarina Show event is the crowning of the Sarina Show Girl and Sarina Rural Ambassador.

This year’s Show Girl is Josephine Dahtler while Ashton Solli was named Sarina Rural Ambassador.

Both will travel to the Ekka in Brisbane in August for the State Finals.

Local Farmers Lunch a great success

WELL, I predicted last week that it would be a great success and I’m so happy to say that my belief proved to be true.

The Greater Whitsunday Food Network delivered another iconic “Local Farmers Lunch” event as part of the 2021 Mackay Festival of Art program. This event could only happen with the support of our incredible sponsors: Mackay Regional Council, Mackay Waterfront, 4MK, Star FM, Moss on Wood and The Flackyard.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson endorsed the support of the council, saying, “It was great to see a sell-out crowd at the Greater Whitsunday Food Network Farmers Lunch celebrating local produce, cooked by local chefs and served by local high school students. Certainly, it makes me feel very proud to be a civic leader in this region”.

Our team of student volunteers from Mackay North State High School did a fantastic job as they honed skills for their Cert 2 in Hospitality at the fine dining event. Thank you also to their dedicated teachers, who also volunteered their time to supervise their students.

We love Dave Perkins from 4MK. He is a staunch supporter of the Food Network and our Farmers Market, and we thank him for volunteering his time to be a stellar MC for the day. 4MK also gave away two tickets to the sell-out event with the lucky winner, Sue Philp, the happy recipient saying, “When I’m home the radio goes onto 4MK, I heard Perko mention

the tickets, and I was excited when I won.

I’m so grateful for winning the prize, and it was a terrific prize for GWFN and 4MK to give away. I enjoyed eating the different food and fine dining experience.

I really appreciate all the work that went into one event”.

GWFN committee Deb McLucas, Naomi Rays, Ian Mason gave their time to keep the event running smoothly. Deb McLucas- GWFN president, expressed that “One of the best outcomes was in building the connections between some amazing local chefs who will continue to champion our local produce in their own kitchens after the event.

We were also thrilled to have sixteen hospitality students from North Mackay State School working with us. They did a fantastic job serving and attending to the guests throughout the lunch. We expect that many will be inspired by this experience and will continue their study towards a career in hospitality”.

Sarina Sugar Shed’s team served up delicious drinks. At the same time, Andrea from Coffee Service Packaging was instrumental in helping GWFN deliver a waste-free event with her donation of bio-degradable cups, and thanks also to Auscan Worm Farms for the compost bins.

The waste-free process started during food prep at Moss on Wood. Collecting waste right through until students cleared the last plate, closed the waste loop, supplied to some delighted worms, and turned into compost.

And right now, the available produce is looking beautiful. Of course, up here were blessed with an abundance of bananas that our friends in the southern states would envy.

RESEARCH: At the Mackay Renewable Biocommodities Pilot Plant in Racecourse, QUT’s Heng-Ho Wong explains to a group of cane growers the scientific research under way using sugarcane trash as a feedstock

Biofuture investment a deal sweetener meeting agreed the region already had the essentials to attract world players including plentiful biofeedstocks, green energy, good quality and reliable water, and access to ports and airports.

Biofutures is a subject that has been talked about for many years, however now looks to be the most promising time I have seen in all my years in the sugar industry.

We are being told that genuine commercial players are eager to look at our region to base their manufacturing and export operations here.

The idea is that manufacturers who

MACKAY’S sugar industry could sweeten the deal when it comes to attracting world players to invest in the region’s biofuture.

Representatives of key industry sectors and all levels of government gathered this month at the Resources Centre of Excellence to create an actionable plan. The

currently use petrochemicals to make plastics and other synthetic products will use a clean green bioproduct in the future – and hopefully it will be made here in Mackay.

Australia is already the second largest exporter of raw sugar in the world and in Mackay we are in the box seat by producing one third of that tonnage annually.

There’s always going to be bulk raw sugar exported to a number of countries across the world.

But the cane we grow can also be a feedstock for a whole host of clean green biofutures opportunities.

Moreover, to feed 9 billion people across the world by 2050 we will need plant proteins to create future foods, that will be in addition to other protein sources currently available.

Cane growers will grow much more cane if they are guaranteed a return on it. The key is that the whole value chain from the farming business to end product processors must share in the income stream.

Of course, sugar cane is not the only crop with possibilities in our region. Others are the fallow crops that may be grown by growers in their crop rotations. With

only short distance transport requirements to a processing plant here for the production of biofuels, future foods protein production or a host of other bio products, including biomedical developments in the region, this could well be a gamechanger.

The first meeting has been a success in sharing information and collaborating between the different sectors.

It shows the promise of what may be possible with a collective mindset, a collective focus, and a collective energy to drive this opportunity forward.

Classic Car Club revs up in community IT HAS been a busy time for the Mackay Classic Car Club.

Last weekend members travelled to Waverly Creek to man the “driver reviver”.

Members organised food, sleeping arrangements and cars for the weekend away.

On Friday those cars who were still in town enjoyed the NAIDOC parade and chauffeured Elders from the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

Richard Collier made a statement in his red MG TF with the beautiful Miss NAICOC Jayla Yasserie.

Russell Prince in his FX Holden had a lively drive with Elders Cissy Griffin, Shirley O’Donnell and Denise Waite.

The ladies searched high andlow for seatbelts, but of course the “Old Girl” is from an era of no seatbelts or indicators.

HIGH FIVE: The Festival attracted a range of participants and audiences

Another successful literature festival

By CHLOE DANIEL AS THE sun sets on another successful Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival, 5000 children around the Mackay region now have a new appreciation for their favourite books and the brilliant minds behind them.

Held over the course of three days, the festival boasted excited children, eager adults and inspiring authors connecting through their love of literature.

Catering for children of all ages, Whitsunday Anglican

School was filled with smiles gazing up at a talented line-up of well-known authors including Saroo Brierley, Tristan Bancks, Gaye Chapman, and Ruben Meerman.

Whitsunday Anglican School graduate and Monash University student Jayatee Banerjee was involved as a volunteer this year, helping to ensure the event remained COVID-safe.

“I really enjoyed [the festival]…I got to meet a lot of authors and learn about their perspectives and life stories…it was really inspiring,” she said.

“I was able to meet Saroo Brierley…that was definitely the highlight for me!” She also said that walking around, all that could be seen were the smiles on children’s faces who had travelled from as far as Western Queensland to attend.

“It’s amazing that regional students are able to see their favourite authors in person…interact with them and learn more about the people behind the stories they all love to read,” Miss Banerjee said.

Being her first year attending, Whitsunday Anglican School year 8 student Sarah Smith said she

found the experience very exciting.

Miss Smith said her cohort were able to watch the presentations of around six authors; however, Tristan Bancks (actor, filmmaker and author of Two Wolves, The Fall, as well as the Tom Weekly book series) was her favourite.

“He was a really good speaker and very interesting,” she said.

“I think [the festival] is a great way for younger people to learn that reading is really important, and it just brings a lot of people together as a community.

“I am definitely looking forward to it again next year.”

Founder and Director of Imagine Home Loans Mackay Alan Pedersen has attended a total of four Literary Dinners which he said never cease to amaze, with Friday night’s guest speaker Saroo Brierley’s presentation being no exception.

“What usually draws me to the dinners is the calibre of the guest speakers and authors, they never disappoint,” he said.

The night’s MC David Cameron recalled positive comments he had heard from children during

the week on their experiences with the authors, which especially resonated with Mr Pedersen.

“What those kids said about how [the authors] interacted, their message, and how they inspired people…was brilliant,” he said.

Living a short distance out of Mackay, Mr Pedersen said the travel time means very little for an event of this degree and nature.

“I have to travel about 70 kilometres…[but] I would go a lot further than that for this festival,” he said. “It’s definitely worth it for the calibre of the people they have at the dinner.”

Not just for kids

FUSION Dance Arts is not just for kids! Adults can get in on the fun as well, with owner-principal Jocelyn Cowper flexing her personal training skills as well.

The fitness studio has been operated alongside the dance school for more than six years and it offers adult fitness training in both Marian and Mirani.

“We do hip classes, strength training boxing sessions, mixed sessions and specialise in BLT - Bums Legs and Tums,” Jocelyn said.

“There are also nutrition lessons, programs and challenges, and every term there is an outlet specifically designed for mothers.

“This is for mums to have some time by themselves and for them to build confidence in themselves and work on themselves not just physically but mentally as well.”

Jocelyn said the children and parents classes were designed to work hand-in-hand, which was important for families living in the region’s more out-lying communities.

“It really is great for escapism and mental health and to get out of the house and build a larger social circle which is a great outlet,” she said.

Mumu, earth-cooked fish

By DAVID LORNIE LAST week I wrote about Kokoda Fish, a Papua New Guinean way of preparing raw fish.

That particular dish is found mainly in hotels and restaurants but if you want real grassroots fish cooked the way the villagers would traditionally serve it, you can’t go past the mumu.

A mumu is simply a hole in the ground used as a sream oven.

Food cooked this way is unlike anything found in Western countries. I believe the Maoris have a version called hangi.

To make a mumu you dig a pit in the ground, with the depth dependent on the amount of food you are cooking.

Then you light a wood fire in the pit with plenty of timber to form burning coals (coconut shells are also good for this as their coals burn really hot and slow).

FRESH: Reef fish ready for the mumu The real heat for cooking a mumu comes from river stones which are placed on top of the burning coals.

When the fire has died down and you are left with glowing embers, the stones will be hot enough for cooking the fish.

Another way to get the stones hot is to build a big fire next to the pit, throw the stones on and, when the stones are hot enough, chuck them into the pit. I’ve seen this done in the PNG Highlands but they cook pigs rather than fish.

Regardless, the pit is usually lined with banana or other leaves.

Traditionally, the whole fish are wrapped in leaves but foil can also be used. The fish is seasoned with garlic, ginger, salt and whatever other flavours you feel like.

Coconut milk can also be added before the fish is wrapped up and placed on the stones for cooking.

Whatever accompaniments you have for the fish are also wrapped and put in the pit – sweet potatoes, tapioca, corn and pumpkin are traditional favourites.

Greens or kumu, such as pumpkin tips, aibika and choko leaves fresh from the village garden or market, are also added.

The food is then covered with leaves, cardboard or newspaper – this is where your trusty old copies of the Mackay Local News come in handy – and covered with soil.

The food is then left to cook underground for about an hour – like a BBQ, the timing is something you get a feel for, but it’s hard to overcook a mumu as the stones eventually lose their heat.

COOKED: The fish are ready to be eaten Then, when ready, you dig up the soil and remove the food.

Mumu food is moist from the steam, richly flavoursome, smoky and delicious. It’s so good that once Heston, Ramsey and those other Michelin blokes hear about it, they’ll be charging you the big bucks to enjoy mumu food.

In the meantime, take the time to give it a crack. It’s a tasty and fun alternative to the classic

family Aussie BBQ and easy to make. All you need is a backyard, some firewood and river stones.

Next week, we’ll look at the Tolai Aigir, an East New Britain varient on the mumu. It’s sensational and just talking about it is making me hungry.

REVHEADS: There was plenty of action at the drags

Huge weekend for drag racing IT WAS a huge weekend for Palmyra Drag Racing Club with the “Keep the Speed off the Streets Test and Tune” and “PDRC Club Champs Round Four”.

President of Palmyra Dragway Glen Cunningham said plenty of people came to test out their cars, race against mates and have a play on the track with their vehicles.

“We had 84 race cars showing up,” Glen said. “We had people from as far north as Cairns and as far south as Gladstone, as well as around the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac region.

“A lot of the upgrades we have made to the track really attracted a large amount of attention,” he said.

Plenty of spectators showed up for the events and more events are expected in the coming months.

“We have some big events coming up with October being a big month for us. (We have) Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars coming up from Sydney which we will have ten of in Mackay,” Glen said.

“At the end of October we are holding the Australian championships.”

Blood, sweat and beers for classic Holden THIS 1978 model VB Commodore is a very special one as the owner got a hold of it just before he turned 15.

It was sitting in the next-door neighbour’s yard and seemed like a cool first car, so it was purchased for basically a box of beer.

The owner then built it with his Dad and learnt how to drive in it. His Pop painted her in Dad’s shed.

They worked on it every weekend and the family project started taking place with the

added yella terra head/cam/carby/manifold/ extractors and other good bits.

He was the coolest kid in year twelve and drove it whilst being a first year apprentice.

It was then pulled off the road for a V8 swap and seven years later it was black, with a built 355 powered Holden engine with early heads which ran an 11.6 down the strip.

After many more upgrades and another engine change the car currently has a cast VN headed 383 Holden engine in it and has now

dipped into the nines. This is hands down one of Mackay’s nicest and fastest naturally aspirated 100 percent street cars, and also possibly one of the oldest registered VB Commodores on the road.

It was one of the first Commodores off the production line. This car has seen a lot of frustration, blood, sweat and beers and, of course, money. But it’s worth every minute when you can strap in it send it down the strip and take the family for a pub feed on the weekends.

Origin Three, too little too late Skye

Gregory Skye on Sport IT WAS a case of “too little too late” for our Queensland State of Origin team this year, but… and it’s a BIG but… we were able to stop NSW from claiming a clean sweep.

Sometimes we just have to take what we can get!

While Freddie (Brad) Fittler smiled for the cameras and claimed the shield, I have to believe that there’s that little voice inside (I like to think it’s the face of Fatty Vautin and he’s wobbling his head with his tongue in the side of his cheek) reminding him that it’s been 21 years since a NSW team claimed the clean sweep. So again, as Queenslanders, we take these small victories and look ahead to 2022.

Without a doubt, the 2021 NSW State of Origin team were collectively the better team, both on paper and on the field. Interestingly enough, both New South Wales and Queensland were missing key playmakers in the respective games they lost; so can a team’s success really come down to two or three play-

ers? In my opinion, absolutely!

We saw the Queensland Origin reign during the Thurston, Smith, Slater and Cronk era and when you surround these key playmakers with strong support, you reap the results. While skills are certainly integral, let’s not underestimate the sense of “team” that players of this nature bring to the table. Much like Ash Barty recently credited “their” win at Wimbledon… plural, as in ‘her team’s’ win.

Ash understands and recognises that even in an individual sport, you don’t reach greatness without a team beside you. Great rugby players know their place and their job within the team and great players will build comradery and a level of cohesiveness that will result in some absolute brilliant football, which we witnessed in Game Three.

One could argue that the dominance of inform Panther players in this year’s NSW team was the key to their success and we could liken this to the Smith, Cronk and Slater combination that proved formidable for many years. However, a team is not limited to six or thre players, but it can definitely form a solid foundation. If you throw in some pure talent like Thurston, Gagai, Ponga, Munster, Holmes, Tedesco, Trbojevic and Addo-Carr who seamlessly partner and work with any player to create opportunities, breaks, assists and tries, you’re well

on your way to a successful on-field formula.

Let’s not forget that it’s integral to give the in-form young guns game time, because any teams future is reliant on their success.

So, my takeaways from Origin 2021: n Never underestimate the true grit and determination of a team with something to prove, both to itself and its supporters. n Key playmakers are the foundation of a great team, but strong team players who play for something bigger than themselves are integral to success. n Mackay and the greater Central Queensland region has produced some of the best players we’ve ever witnessed on a football field. n While Ben Hunt had a cracker Game Three, I found myself yelling at the TV “why can’t you play like this all the time”… so for me, the jury is still out.

All I can say is bring on the 2022 State of Origin… and let’s hope Josh Addo-Carr intercepts the ball so we can see Cairns local “The Hammer” (Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow) put his foot down. Now there’s a race I would like to see!

The U-14s Tsunamis came up against third place Storm Hurricanes for the second time this season.

A tough start to the game with the Hurricanes defense proving too good in the first half, keeping the Tsunamis scoreless.

The team fought hard in the second half to

bring the ball down court and into the attacking circle, eventually breaking the line of defence, to put 14 goals on the board.

Even with a surge in the second half, the Tsunamis were too far behind to come back for a win.

FANS of the World’s Greatest Race, get ready, get set and go. Mackay is running its own greatest for the second year.

The car event was organised and created by Katelyn Edmonds and a group of friends. They found like-minded people and Mackay Random Adventures was born, followed by Mackays Greatest Race.

The aim is to find clues and solve riddles to get your team to the final destination. This will be a team event – each team must consist of one vehicle per team. It is a 2WD compatible event.

The minimum occupancy of the vehicle must be two with a diver and a navigator. The maximum is how many you can legally fit in your car.

The event came about whenKatelyn was spitballing with her friends about what kind of adven-

ture to create and asked, “what if we came up with a sort of world’s greatest race?”

The end result was the car race where 35 teams joined in. This was much larger than Katelyn expected.

“We got such hype on this event that we decided to do it annually, so this is the second year running it,” she said.

“This year already we have 18 teams signed on, with many more coming after they find out whats going on with work and finding baby sitters.

“This all started off as just a one-day event and it just blew up” she said.

This next event will be held on August 29 at the Mackay city gates and will be for 130kms over three to four hours.

Registration fees are $20 and everyone is urged to drive safely.

Big event turnout

AROUND eighty cyclists and runners challenged themselves in very cool but sunny conditions for the 6.4km ascent from Netherdale to Eungella Chalet.

The perfect conditions suited the athletes as the cyclists started first with runners following one minutes later. All athletes were vying for the prestigious Torque Tyre & Trailer Spares perpetual trophy where the gold medal winners for male and female cyclist and runner are inscribed in history.

A respectful one minute silence was also observed by all at the start line for former Mackay Road Runners Queen of the Mountain, Laura Pettifer who tragically passed away in 2008 in a cycling training accident.

Laura was a superbly talented triathlete who attained a high level of success with her cycling and running in particular. Laura was very involved in helping other

athletes get the best of themselves, so much so, that her Mother, Veronica donates prizes and a perpetual trophy to the first two junior male and female runners from their 3.2km start every year since her passing.

Joely makes 100-game milestone

By STEPHEN THOMPSON JOEL Ramsdale joined the 100 club with the Moranbah Bulldogs over the weekend in the U-7s against the Whitsunday Sea Eagles on Saturday.

100 club games is an awesome milestone, Joel has been a household name at the Bulldogs since his arrival always giving his best for his mates and the club week in week out.

Joel moved up from Victoria with his family and after settling into town, like many at the time, had no homegrown opportunity to play the game he loves.

He began by training with the Women’s team in 2016 and then

joined in on the Friday night commute to Mackay with the Thompsons and the Coldreys to play with the Magpies and didn’t he look good in Black and White? But then again they all do!

When opportunity arose to play for the Bulldogs with the entry of the U-12s back into the comp, he jumped on board and never looked back.

He was and is a pleasure to coach, initially a timid yet hungry little left footer running off half forward and through the midfield.

He has grown in these roles as his body matured and has become a very reliable player and leader in the U-17s and Senior footy teams with pace to burn and skills

to match.

Like a handful of other players in the U-17s, he pioneered the U-14s team and now the U-17s, paving the way for all of our junior boys and girls that have somewhere to ply their trade on Saturdays in matches with the Bulldogs.

Joel rose through the ranks and has been involved in many representative squads including the Mackay Crows, Capricornia School Sport and the Gold Coast Suns Academy where he has excelled and is admired by his peers and inspired young footballers wanting be just like Joely!

He has won countless awards, including an Mackay AFL Runner

up League medal in the Under 14’s and earned a long-awaited premiership medal to hang around his neck in 2020.

As the club has grown he has been able to play senior football and I’m sure this would be one of his fondest memories in his footy career to date.

We can’t wait to see what the future holds for a mature young man and a fantastic footballer.

Joel is lucky to be part of such an incredible family full of love and support for his love of Aussie Rules.

Volley tourney on way

CITIBEACH Volleyball Mackay has announced its once a year tournament is coming up fast for July 30, 31 and August.

This tournament is played against Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns players.

All towns are competing for best centre and the players also compete for the best male player best female player. This is only one leg of the series.

President of Citibeach Volleyball Mackay Jacintha Brownsey said, “On the Friday night we will have social threes on the Saturday starting first thing in the morning we will

have men and ladies pairs go off first thing in the morning after that there will be mixed pairs.

“Our most competitive pairs would be our ladies pair and men’s pairs after that come, mixed players, then that night we will have a BBQ.” On the Sunday morning there will be men fours and ladies fours starting off then after that, there will be after lunch will be the mixed fours.

There will be a tournament in each town.

Townsville has already happened and Mackay players represented well there.

Joel is also super lucky to have football pedigree in his family with his grandfather Peter Chisnall playing on a wing for his mighty Kangaroos in the 1975 VFL premiership.

We are grateful for the time and knowledge Peter has given and passed onto our junior players when he has been able to travel and visit Joel and his family.

ON FRIDAY in Proserpine Bowls, Toby and Harry Craig representing St Catherine’s came through two tight tussles of games and a three-end tie breaker to win the Mackay District section of the All Schools Cup Challenge. They now go to Pine Rivers in August for the State play off. By a stroke of fortune Mackay District has been invited to send two teams this year. On Wednesday there were 12 players in the afternoon of social bowls so they decided to enjoy the luxury of the numbers and play games of Pairs. They had Sue and Mark Pepyat from Geelong, Carol and Nev Smith on an extend family visit from Racecourse at Swan Hill and Bob Preston from Camden enjoying the warm hospitality.

Short round

IT WAS a short round of fixtures for Airlie Darts this week with only four matches taking place, but four important matches nonetheless. It consisted of four of the top players who are in contention of finishing the season in the top four, but couldn’t afford a slip up now. First up was the run away leader Jamie Woods who can start to see the finish line now with only seven rounds to go after today, and he put on another solid display dispatching of Nathan O’Hara in fine fashion 6-0. Next up was Andy Peel and Ross Gallichan. Both Andy and Ross have a lot to play for in this match. Andy, a top four spot and Ross to try and take his eighth spot back.
