‘New’ vaccine technology is decades old

By DAVID LORNIE ACCORDING to the World Health Organisation, there are over 200 vaccine candidates for COVID-19 being developed.

“Of all the vaccines that are studied in the lab and laboratory animals, roughly seven out of every 100 will be considered good enough to move into clinical trials in humans. Of the vaccines that do make it to clinical trials, just one in five is successful,” the WHO said.

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the government body tasked with approving vaccines for public use in this country.

Vaccines must meet strict standards. Before a vaccine is registered for use, it is tested extensively during development and then in thousands of people. Testing first begins with laboratory research, then animal studies and finally human clinical trials. Clinical trials involve testing the vaccine in volunteers, and are conducted in phases.

The TGA has currently approved three vaccines for use in Australia, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine which have been in use for some time. The Moderna vaccination has also just been approved by the TGA. The Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines use a technology which packs messenger RNA (mRNA) inside tiny fat droplets which instruct cells how to make the spike protein.

Unlike vaccine approaches that use either a weakened or dead whole microbe or parts of one, this type of vaccine just uses a section of genetic material that provides the instructions for specific proteins, not the whole microbe.

DNA and RNA are the instructions our cells use to make proteins.

These vaccines deliver a specific set of instructions to our cells, either as DNA or mRNA, for them to make the specific protein that we want our immune system to recognise and respond to.

The mRNA molecule is incredibly unstable — it’s so easy to break down it needs to be transported in super-cold conditions.

It has no ability to integrate into DNA, so there’s no risk of ‘end of times’ human mutations occuring.

Unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, which store the instructions in single-stranded RNA, the AstraZeneca vaccine uses double-stranded DNA delivered in an engineered virus. These viruses have been further crippled by deleting chunks of their genome so that they cannot replicate, further increasing their safety.

Like all medicines, the vaccines can have side effects.

The TGA said, “The overwhelming majority of these are mild and resolve within a few days. The Therapeutic Goods Administration closely monitors suspected side effects. Importantly, adverse events reported to the TGA are often not caused by the vaccine itself”.

Possible side effects of a jab are tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, fever and nausea. Other rare side effects have been noted.

“We are closely monitoring rare reports of blood clots with low blood platelets following the AstraZeneca vaccine,” the TGA said.

The TGA is also closely monitoring reports of myocarditis and pericarditis following the Pfizer vaccine.

For the past eight years Keeara and Reece Photography have been capturing the memories and moments of literally thousands of talented Mackay singers, dancers, dramatic artists and performers.

From soloists, to dance troupes, choirs to ensembles, there is scarcely a moment of the eisteddfod either they, or a member of their team, won’t be tucked away inconspicuously stage-side ready for the perfect moment.

“We started this to help us fund our kids’ extra-curricular activities to be

With three kids – all of whom are talented performers themselves – the couple was able to be there for their performances, while offering a specialised service to performance schools throughout the region.

Fast forward eight years and a few pictures here and there has evolved into tens of thousands of images throughout each eisteddfod and the processing of at least 3,000 images a day for the duration.

And no, that is not a typo!

“We do this because we love it, obviously, and now we are doing eisteddfods farther afield.

“Seeing the kids grow up and seeing them on stage every year is something re-

ally special to be a part of.

“We missed out on the eisteddfods last year because of COVID, but we are extremely excited for this year and that it is able to go ahead. “ As well as the eisteddfods, Keeara and Reece have become a go-to for the creative arts community throughout the Mackay and Isaac regions, covering events such as Art on Show, dance events, school formals, graduations and awards, dance and performing arts studio concerts, studio images and Mackay Show.

The latter is something they give their own time to, capturing imagery for the Show Association as a community service.

Giving back – and going above and beyond – is how they roll.

“We both grew up here and we love going back to places like our old schools and being a part of something we have special memories of ourselves.

“Where we can give something back, then we do. For us, it is about being part of something we love and being there for our kids as well.”

Mackay Eisteddfod started yesterday (Wednesday, August 11) and will be held in two sections.

The first instalment will be staged at the MECC and CQ Conservatorium from August 11 – 22 with the second to be staged from October 2-17.

Postponed WILMAR Sugar Australia has made the difficult decision to postpone its Invicta Centenary community celebrations due to ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19.Planning was well advanced for a full day of Centenary events to be held in Giru on Friday. Burdekin Regional Operations Manager Paul Turnbull said the decision to defer the community celebrations until later in the year was not made lightly. “We’re all very disappointed that we can’t celebrate the milestone with the Giru community next week but our number one priority must be to protect (people’s) health.”

Sugar ship

THE first raw sugar of the 2021 season has shipped out of the Port of Mackay. Local growers looked on as raw sugar produced at Wilmar’s Plane Creek and Proserpine mills was loaded into the MV Mareeba bulk carrier. It was destined for Sugar Australia’s Yarraville Refinery in Melbourne where it will be processed into a wide range of sugar products for the iconic CSR Sugar brand and for Australian food and beverage customers. The Mackay Port tour was organised by Wilmar’s Plane Creek Grower Marketing Consultant Angus McKerrow and Mackay Sugar Terminal Mechanical Supervisor Hamish Beveridge to give cane growers greater insight into the sugar supply chain.

Study invite

CQUniversity Australia is inviting prospective students to try out possible study options at a series of new and interactive open house events. The Open House events have replaced the regular on-campus open days to ensure that participants get a more hand-on experience while also being COVID safe.

The events have been specifically designed to immerse guests in the course environments in which they would be studying, allowing them to experience campus facilities in a hands-on way. CQUniversity said the format of the events would allow attendees a chance to explore study options.

Sweet meat, it’s hard to beat

THE (Queensland) Australian Meat Industry Council’s (AMIC) annual Central Queensland Region Sausage King, Best Butchers Burger Smallgoods Competition was held at the Souths Sharks Football Club in Mackay recently.

As part of the Australian Meat Industry Councils state-wide annual events calendar, these competitions have been going for over 20 years and attract over

a thousand entries per year across the regions Central Queensland is always a hotly contested event and a sure sign that regional Queensland AMIC member butchers see the value of being part of this iconic event.

The competition consisted of six sausage, two burger and six smallgoods categories.

The winners progress to the State fi-

nals to determine which butchers are truly entitled to wear the crowns for best sausage, best burger and best smallgoods in Queensland.

State winners will then go on to compete at the National Finals in February 2022.

Entries were judged on the uncooked and cooked appearance of the product in various categories. The entries were

then taste-tested for flavour and texture amongst other measurements, with points awarded for presentation of the product and the creative new recipes that the butchers come up with each and every year.

Celebrity judges and local industry leaders and AMIC meat industry sponsors and partners were judges across the event.

Easy riders go forth

By LIAM LEONARD OUR recent social ride day was a great day out. The fog cleared by the time we got to The Leap at about 8.45am on Sunday.

But we did get held up in roadworks along the way and we lost about an half hour from those delays as well as a half hour break at Bloomsbury for a stretch.

We pulled up in Proserpine briefly to discuss some ride changes due to time. We went from Proserpine straight up to Shute Harbour lookout.

We had a 15 minute break there before we were informed by one of our friends that access to the beach at Flametree was restricted due to Land and Resort developments.

So from there we rode back to the Whitsunday Sailing Club for lunch which was being well supported (extremely busy) by locals and travellers as well as us riders.

Lunch was amazing. After lunch, most of us were ready to be a carpet snake and have a nanna nap. Most of us riders then went our way back home.

Some of us detoured to Conway Beach on the way home for a quick look then headed back to Mackay. We returned home just before 5pm.

It was excellent to have a massive variety of bikes too. From tourers to cruisers to road bikes to trail bikes.

Konvoy 4 Kids rolling into town

THIS year’s Konvoy 4 Kids event will be held this Sunday, August 15 from 10:30am to 3:00pm.

Each year, thousands of kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs, get support from Variety the Children’s Charity when they need it most.

Over the last 10 years, the QLD Variety Bash teams 69, 50 & AW409 in Mackay have proudly raised over $214,000 for children in need.

In Mackay, cars 69, 50 & AW409 hold many fundraising events throughout the year and their biggest event is the annual Konvoy 4 Kids.

This is a convoy of trucks that travels from Sarina Showgrounds along the Bruce Highway to

Mackay Showgrounds before celebrating with a family fun day at the Showgrounds.

Their mission is to empower Aussie kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs, to live, laugh and learn.

The vision is for all Aussie kids to attain their full potential regardless of ability or background.

The event will also have free rides for kids and market stalls.

You won’t go hungry with various food vendors on site.

Get your photo taken with the Variety Bash Barbie Car. Get involved with the Games on the day with prizes to be won. There is also live entertainment with Anette Worthington and you can cuddle a farm animal at the Free MAD Animal Addiction Barnyard.

Man dead

An 18-year-old Bowen man has died following a collision near Nebo Sunday morning. Early information suggests just before 5:30, a car and B-double tanker collided head-on at Teamsters Gully, approximately 20km east of Nebo on the Peak Downs Highway. It appears prior to the incident the truck was heading west hauling diesel fuel. The 18-year-old passenger in the car passed away at the scene.

The 18-year-old driver has been transported the Mackay Base Hospital with a non-life-threatening head injury. The truck driver received minor injuries.

Service says ‘Bravus’ for $100,000 rescue bonus BRAVUS Mining & Resources has continued its support for RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter, with more than $100,000 donated to the service since construction on the Carmichael mine and rail Project commenced.

Bravus Mining and Resources Head and Communications and Community Kate Campbell said the company was proud to support the service, which provides a lifeline to people in northern and central Queensland.

“Regional and rural communities throughout central Queensland rely on RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter to respond to emergencies when distances or locations are challenging and our Project is no exception to this,” Ms Campbell said.

“RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter has provided life-saving services to some of our people and contractors when they have been in need throughout construction of our Project and we’re extremely grateful for their support. “The RACQ CQ Rescue team can get a patient from the Clermont area to the hospital in Mackay in a little over an hour compared to nearly four hours by road.

“We’re proud to contribute to the service that provides so much for regional Queensland,” she said. RACQ CQ Rescue is community funded, and services an area four times the size of Tasmania with round-the-clock operations 365 days a year.

RACQ CQ Rescue CEO Ian Rowan said the community was indebted to Bravus who had all committed to donating $50,000 to the not-forprofit service, which was absolutely vital to the sick and injured within Central and Northern Queensland.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have such vital support from a high-profile partner which ensures we can have a world-class aeromedical helicopter service on our doorstep and available anywhere, anytime throughout Central Queensland,” Mr Rowan said.

“RACO CQ Rescue is a vital part of emergency support for all workers in this region and it’s reassuring to know organisations like Bra-

vus appreciate the value of supporting our helicopter and that with their commitment we can continue to provide our vital, lifesaving service to anyone in a time of crisis,” he said.

Bravus Mining and Resources is also pleased to once again sponsor the RACQ CQ Rescue Helicopter Gala Dinner on 20 August this year and Bravus has also donated a signed 2021 Cowboys jersey to be auctioned on the night.

Since construction has commenced on the Carmichael Project, Bravus has donated and partnered with near 100 community organisations across north and central Queensland, contributing more than $1.5 million dollars to date.

THE Coral Sea Clinical Research Institute (CSCRI) is conducting an early phase clinical trial investigating therapeutic proteins produced in spirulina that are being developed by Lumen Bioscience, Seattle, Washington USA. McCallum Reality Check! Coordinator (Rivers & Reef) Mackay Conservation Group I WONDER whether there are people reading this who have business ideas that they aren’t sure will return a profit.

You’re not alone.

However, some businesses seem to find it easy to get a helping hand from government to do the work that should be their own responsibility.

Last week the Federal Government announced that another $12.65 million of taxpayers money would be given to a private company, Bowen River Utilities, to enable them to complete their Final Business Case for the proposed Urannah Dam and irrigation scheme. That’s on top of $10 mil-

lion previously handed over to the same private company in 2019 to finish their detailed business case and $3 million in 2018 for a preliminary business case.

Another $2 million has been handed over to the hydro scheme that has been tacked on to the project, possibly to give it a green tick.

That’s a lot of taxpayers money being given away to a private company to work out whether their business idea stacks up.

In February 2021, Bowen River Utilities said they had completed their final business case and would release it later that month.

Nothing has seen the light of day. Last week another $12.65 million was given to the project to do work that the company says it has previously completed, presumably with the $10 million handed out in 2019.

the cost of developing their business plan and obtaining all the approvals necessary to start it up.

Of course, a private company has to make a profit to survive.

If the Urannah Dam did ever go ahead it would have to sell the water at a price that covers the cost of construction and maintenance as well as returning a reasonable return to shareholders.

Who would end up paying for that? Of course that would be mostly farmers. The same farmers who have said that current water prices are too high.

Mackay Conservation Group agrees with farmers in the Lower Burdekin who say that the best solution to water security is water efficiency.

Purchasing new irrigation equipment that doesn’t use as much water costs money but nowhere near the cost of constructing a new dam.

Urannah Dam was first proposed in the 1960s.

It didn’t stack up financially then and it still doesn’t.

Back to work pack EMPLOYERS in Central Queensland may now be able to start claiming up to $20,000 under the Palaszczuk Government’s $140 million revitalised Back to Work program. The program, which offers incentive payments to employers that take on disadvantaged job seekers, has already helped more than 3,100 people in CQ into work. Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer said that applications for initial payments to employers were now open. “Investing in skills and backing small business are at the heart of our COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan because we believe wherever you are in Queensland, you deserve the chance to get a good job,” Minister Farmer said. “Since 2016, the Back to Work program has seen more than 25,800 people get into work because of the assistance provided to more than 12,100 employers.

CENTRAL Queensland’s next generation of doctors are one step closer to achieving their career dreams as applications have now opened for CQUniversity’s new Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine) course. The course is part of an Australian-first university and hospital partnership between CQUniversity, The University of Queensland, Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service that will enable up to 40 doctors a year to be trained across Central Queensland and the Wide Bay. Students will complete the threeyear CQUniversity Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine) course with CQUniversity, before moving into UQ’s four-year MD program. Dr Sonia Saluja, Head of Course for the CQUniversity Bachelor of Medical Science (Pathway to Medicine) explained that the opening of applications was an important milestone for the partnership and future of healthcare delivery in the Central Queensland region.

$2m for cancer AUSTRALIA’S largest fun run/walk for breast cancer research, the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic, has announced a donation of $2 million to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The MDC donation – more than double 2020’s donation – will fund vital research to improve the detection, prevention and treatment of breast cancer and help to improve the lives of the 20,000 Australian women who will be diagnosed this year. “To have over 50,000 people take part in the Mother’s Day Classic Local across 75 locations nationwide was so inspiring during a global pandemic,” Mother’s Day Classic CEO, Zara Lawless, said. We were lucky that our community was still able to come together this year, albeit in smaller and more informal locations across Australia. The inspirational MDC community spirit was as strong as ever, showing that nothing will get in our way to raise money for breast cancer research.”

Zero-risk approach ‘crazy’ George

ROAD deaths are far too high and need to be reduced at all costs.

Despite police action, people still speed and break other road rules.

Despite all the road safety education, multiple avoidable accidents still occur on a daily basis.

Despite the record government funding being poured into road safety upgrades, the road death toll does not dissipate. o tough measures are needed to get the road death toll to zero.

Life-threatening head injuries can be avoided by requiring every driver and passenger in a car to wear a safety-rated helmet just like racing car drivers must wear.

Speed limits should be universally reduced to 40 kilometres an hour with mass deployment of police to enforce that reduced limit.

Defensive driving courses should be made available to everyone, on a voluntary basis of course.

But if you don’t undertake such a course then there may be roads you’re restricted from driving on, such as highways because, after all, you’ll pose a danger to other drivers.

Anyone who opposes these strict measures must really just want people killed on our roads.

If you haven’t guessed yet, I’m being sarcastic and don’t believe in a single proposal I’ve suggested above.

A zero-risk approach to road deaths such as I’ve outlined may be noble, but it’s misguided because of the severe inconvenience it poses to

society, the negative impact on the economy and the crimp on liberty.

Yet when it comes to a virus it seems our political elite are willing to trade away the terrible impacts on society, the economy, and liberty to achieve zero deaths.

Masks are mandated in certain areas.

When COVID cases hit a certain number or there is a single death, cities are put in lockdown.

While vaccines are voluntary, there is the ongoing coercive threat of domestic vaccine passports which will restrict the unvaccinated from participating in certain things that the vaccinated can engage in, like crossing a state border, going to a sporting event or getting a job.

Road deaths in Australia exceed deaths from COVID-19. They would likely still exceed deaths from COVID-19 even if we didn’t have any restrictions.

Yet hardly anyone would tolerate such onerous measures as safety helmet mandates, temporary 40kmh speed limit reductions and restrictions on drivers who hadn’t undertaken defensive driving courses.

While all these measures would reduce deaths on our roads, possibly to near zero, they will never be accepted.

No one in political life would dare seriously suggest those opposed to any of those measures actually want people to die on our roads.

Meanwhile we have to put up with mask mandates, lockdowns of cities and perhaps restrictions on those who choose not to be vaccinated and our political elites say those who oppose such measures must want people to die from COVID-19. Not true. They just oppose the ongoing government overreach and restriction on freedom, which is driving many of us crazy.

TWENTY years ago today my son was born.

To this day it is still one of the most beautiful days of my life. My son was my first born closely followed by my daughter in 2004 and I reckon they both have made my life so much better.

20 years ago. Think about it. How time flies so quickly.

2001 was a busy year around Mackay. We got the trusty Victa out of the shed and mowed parts of our streets before they brought in gutters in South Mackay. True story kids.

In 2001 I drove a white Magna, enough said about that car please. There were no tiny traffic lights at the airport. You could turn onto Paradise St at Mackay High. John Farnham still hadn’t said goodbye yet. The Bluewater Lagoon on River St was still 7 years away, and it was the year that the world welcomed one beautiful little boy, my son. What a day it was.

I loved it. I guess when your first born arrives you really have no clue about what to do until you have

to do it. Having this little man arrive with a lot of noise and crying makes you think about your own life. What you’ve done, what you’ve achieved, and what plans you’ve got.

Let’s just say not all my grand plans and dreams came true back then and many years following, but I can say being a father is a beautiful thing.

Over the last 20 years I’ve watched this little man grow so fast. From the time I lost him in the canefields of Glenella, to taking photos of him on the teacups at the Pioneer Valley Show. I’ve watched him make videos on a new electronic tablet thing called an iPad. He grew out of clothes quicker than a quarter mile run takes at Palmya Drags.

I’ve heard and seen many board games, beach walks, dog walks, fast food experiences, birthday candle blow-outs and tears when I’ve had to travel back to work.

Being a distant parent has never been easy but you reap what you sow, or so I’ve been told. In 2021 being close to my children, especially my son who’s blowing out 20 candles this weekend, is one of life’s greatest experiences. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

There are many times in my life when it feels like it was just yesterday that my world changed for the better. It has, every single day. Happy Birthday, Jordan. Love you, Dad.

Jacobsen Zero Waste Whitsundays Meatless Mondays Wouldn’t it be amazing if every restaurant and cafe in our region had a Meatless Monday special on their board each week? How groundbreaking would it be if our region embraced cooking a meat free meal at least once a week every week of the year. The benefits are going to come as a bit of a surprise.

History of Meatless Mondays Meatless Monday and Wheatless Wednesday were created by Herbert Hoover as a result of food shortages during World War 1. Of course this was for different reasons than the environmental impact.

Recent Popularity of Meatless Mondays The campaign was started in 2003 by Sid Lemer, the Founder of The Monday Campaigns, in association with the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future. This is a more recent global campaign designed to lower our overall meat consumption for our health and the environment.

Why Would I Bother Doing This?

Per kilo of protein created by kidney beans uses approximately 18x less land 10 x less water 9 x less fuel, 12 x less fertilizer and 10 x less pesticides than

one kilo of protein from beef.

These are staggering statistics.

Oh and here is one more: Skipping one serving of beef every Monday for a year saves the equivalent emissions to driving 348 miles in a car.

Based on current data and consumption patterns, if everyone on the planet went without meat for one day per week, we could reduce emissions by an estimated 1.0 gigaton per year. That’s equal to taking 273 million cars off the road.

2.5 million or 12.1 per cent of the Australian population already eat a vegetarian diet. Don’t worry, we aren’t asking you to do that. If you did, you would be an environmental rock star, but for now we are asking you to take a deep breath and plan for one meal a week without animal protein.

But What If I Go Hungry?

This does not mean you will be eating without flavour or feeling hungry at the end of the meal. Vegetarian and vegetarian-vegan cooking has come a very long way.

You will not need to sacrifice your favorite dishes, as absolutely every menu you could imagine can be veganized.

Plant based recipes are plentiful. Search up whatever you would love to be eating. For additional inspiration join our FB group where we post a simple Meatless Monday recipe every week and encourage each other to incorporate this way of eating into our routine.

It is easier than you might think.

If you are on the go, the plant based sections in the supermarket have excellent plant based alternatives.

MEAT: Can you live without it?

Biodiversity and species loss.

We know this region and Australia in general is intrinsically tied to primary industries. Unfortunately the impact on the planet is worth stating.

Livestock production is the biggest human contributor to species decline and has led to over 60 percent decline in species populations since 1970.

Other inconvenient statistics include that nearly 15 percent of global greenhouse gases emissions come from the production of meat, dairy and eggs.

The water it takes to produce meat is highest in beef, and it takes four times as much water as the same volume of vegetables.

Work Life Journeys

140 YEARS. It’s an incredible milestone and one which Blacks Real Estate deserves to be proud of.

Being in – and staying in – business for any duration is something to be celebrated; especially with the extent of change most businesses need to endure throughout their lifetime.

But whether for a short time, a long time, or be they a stayer like Blacks, every single business in our region plays a part in making out business community what it is.

First established as HL Black and Co, back when Mackay was still very much a pioneering town, the business was to grow and develop to become one of the commercial mainstays – not only of the region, but, more acutely, of the Mackay City Heart.

True to its roots, and ever-adherent to its most fundamental principles, here is a business which has managed to find that rare balance: it has nurtured growth while staying deeply rooted in its origins.

To make that happen, you need more than the sentiment of the townsfolk.

As anyone in business will tell you, that sentiment and loyalty – the ‘we’re local so support us’ mentality – simply doesn’t cut it anymore.

I HAVE been hearing a lot of conversation lately about Freedom (and no, I am not going to write this column about my views in the current COVID environment).

What I am going to talk about is respect, because to me, the two are closely related.

I have raised my children to believe that everyone has the right to their own opinions, choices, and faith…as long as it does not have a negative impact on others. Respect that right.

You don’t always have to agree with them, but you do have to acknowledge and respect that

they have a right to make their own choices and the freedom to have their own opinions.

We have to take that same respect into the workplace and accept that not everyone will work in the same manner you do and that doesn’t make them less effective!

Years ago, I had two consultants in my team. One was a neat freak, and she had a place for everything (okay, that may have been me) and the other had a wide and proud ring of paperwork surrounding her desk. Needless to say, Captain Chaos had also visited her desk.

And, just to top it off, she was very good at her job!

I know, I bet you are thinking “but how” like I did when she first joined my team. To this day, I can’t tell you how she managed to be so efficient amongst the mess. I can however tell you she gained my respect, and highlighted for me that we are all different, we have

Brought undone by mould blobs OH NO! What’s that? Is that mould?

These shrill, bordering on hysterical, words poured from the mouth of my normally calm and controlled better half about two years ago.

She was looking at the shower recess in the ensuite. The thought of having a small spot of mould in the tile grouting looked like producing a heart attack or at least a dramatic fainting spell.

Fast forward two years. The renovations are nearly complete.

Yes, we progressed from getting a cleaning agent to remove the mould, to a full-scale ensuite renovation.

I was budgeting about $5 to $10. I have now shelled out millions — well, thousands anyway.

Looking down the barrel of financial ruin has been part and parcel of my long married life but I can’t remember a previous occasion when I was undone by a spot of mould.

But I’m not here to tell you about renovation money munching.

It’s a lot more serious than that. It’s been the mental trauma, the psychological torture, and the never-ending mind games that has almost did me in.

At the start we transitioned from spot cleaning the grouting to getting in a professional cleaner, then to “let’s think about” retiling the shower recess.

When I heard the words “let’s think about”, I knew I was in trouble. There was a bigger project in mind. Little did I know it would entail six weeks of construction, disruption, confusion, frustration, and possible destitution.

How could grout cleaning morph into the entire ensuite being demolished and everything in it — I mean everything — being replaced. Not even light switches escaped the purge.

My daily routine also morphed dramatically. It started with, “What type of mould remover will I get?” It is now, “What do you mean I can’t use my regular soap?”

Honest. I have been told that, because of the type of tiles now installed, only certain types of soap can be used. My favourite brand, which has faithfully kept this Adonis-like body cleansed for decades, has been banished.

But that revelation came late in the piece. The lead-up was even more traumatic.

Do you have any idea how many magazines include bathroom renovation features which provide the “latest trends” on a monthly basis, with the latest trends changing in each edition?

YUM: Or not so yum. Look out for mould spores the shower and vanity fittings which were changed because they clashed with the towel rails which were changed to match “changing looks” as depicted in magazines.

The vanity had to change because the new fittings clashed with the colour of the shelves which clashed with the new vanity top which had to change to match the new fittings. (I think that was the sequence. Whatever it was, it took several months to decide).

The mirror had to be replaced because the existing one was “showing signs of age”, meaning it clashed with the “new look” as depicted in at least one magazine.

By the way, did you know there are 63, give or take a couple, of shades of grouting colour? Selecting the right one takes at least one week of serious thought, phone calls to friends and relatives, and daily visits to the tile supplier.

I must stop now. My head hurts. (And it might hurt more if/ when SHE reads this).

I FEEL very fortunate in my role as I connect with members, community and stakeholders most weeks at our Greater Whitsunday Farmers Market.

Walking around the Bluewater Quay precinct and chatting to people doesn’t really feel like work! I also like to plan any stakeholder meetings on Wednesdays so that everyone gets to enjoy the market ambience.

Talking about our members, the Greater Whitsunday Food Network team is very excit-

ed to announce a new role within our organisation: Member Engagement and Communications Coordinator.

This position has recently been advertised and I encourage anyone with a suitable skillset who is passionate about fresh produce to apply.

While writing the position description, I got so enthused about the prospect of filling this role and the benefits that the new position will offer to our loyal members. If you know of a “engagement star” get them to check out the details on our Greater Whitsunday Farmers Market Facebook page.

Recently I was chatting at the markets with Denise from Pure N Natural Honey about one of her byproducts – Wax Blocks. Denise said “It has a lot of uses from making lip balm, shoe polish and sustainable food wraps.”

ter Kefir, I started chatting with Aileen Valencia, who remarked that she has been coming to the markets for a while and recently had become very curious about water kefir.

Racing lemons for worthy cause

THE Shitbox rally is a race from Mackay to Darwin. Racers must drive a rundown beast to great lengths in the hope of raising money for a great cause, the Cancer Council.

Mackay Local News cadet reporter Jacob Cumner caught up with some local speed demons.

Fire-fighter and Border Force Officer Tell us a bit about the shitbox rally We are Team Rawburns and we are participating in Shitbox Rally Spring 2021. This rally will see us driving our Shitbox (worth $1000 or less) from Mackay to Darwin with 550 other participants from across Australia.

Shitbox Rally is not a race, rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable. Travelling across Australia via some of its most formidable roads and remote communities. This year, the rally will take us from Mackay to Charters Towers, onto Chillagoe in Cairns, across to Normanton, Hells Gate and Borroloola, before making

our way to the home stretch of Mataranka and finishing in Darwin! This year the rally aims to raise $2m for Cancer Council, which is used to fund cancer research projects nationally. Since 2009 Box Rallies has raised over $22 million and is the largest funder for the Cancer Council in Australia.

To date we have fund raised $6185 with special thanks to many friends, family and members of the community that have kindly donated to our cause. We also undertook numerous hours of paddock and lawn maintenance services for donations that helped us to get over the line.

A special mention must go out to our major sponsor ICON Cancer Center.

Icon centres are a combination of day oncology hospitals that deliver chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders, radiation oncology centres and comprehensive centres that bring both day oncology and radiation therapy under one roof. Shannon is lucky enough to have an Icon center in Mackay and is carefully monitored by her amazing Oncologist Dr Zia Ansari.

How long does the race normally take?

Its a rally over seven days with the objective of all vehicles completing the entire journey working together as a team to get everyone over the line.

Tell us a bit about the beast you plan to enter this year?

She’s a 1982 Toyota Celica with purple velour seats and pop up headlights! She was donated by a local Mackay family who heard about our fundraising and wanted to help.

This car survived all the kids learning to drive and has been handed down through their family, and now onto us.

How did you hear of this event?

We have taken an interest in charity rallies for a long time as we love to travel Australia visiting small and remote communities.

When they announced the route for 2021 would be Mackay to Darwin ... we knew it was meant to

Is there a reason that you love this race?

Everyone near and dear to us, know the battle we have fought over the last 11 years with Shannon’s cancer journey.

Shannon was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010 at just 30 years old. She underwent six months of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the tumour. Four years later, the cancer returned in her liver and lymph nodes.

Another six months of chemotherapy, major surgery for a liver resection and follow up radiation therapy. We still aren’t out of the

woods yet, in fact we are anxiously awaiting results of a node located on Shannon’s lung in her last CT scan, but are in a much better place than 11 years ago.

This February marked six years without treatment for Shannon, a place that seemed so far away not that long ago and fingers crossed we continue this way! We want to give back to the cancer council and hopefully help some-

one else get to this point as well. If we can raise awareness, and especially awareness for bowel cancer in young people, and we can encourage even one person to go see their GP if something isn’t right, then we’ve completed our task.

We also currently have some very close and loved friends fighting similar battles and we would love to be able do something in honour of them as well.

URANNAH DAM Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce summed it up nicely on the announcement of an additional $12.65 million for the Urannah Dam project this month when he said ‘Water is wealth and a dam is a bank’. This transformational job-creating project will create a new agricultural footprint in the wider Mackay and Whitsundays region.

The Morrison Joyce Government has invested almost $26 million to get this project off the ground and to the point where the proponents can start pouring concrete. We are going to see activity on this dam within the year.

One of the lasting legacies from my time as the Member for Dawson will be the Urannah Dam and what it will deliver for our region into the future.

DELIVERING FOR OUR REGION NORTHERN INSURANCE WIN Work is under way on the establishment of a reinsurance pool to cover cyclones and related flooding in North Queensland thanks to the Morrison Joyce Government’s $10 billion government guarantee. This means the cost of providing insurance will be lower and these savings will be passed on to consumers and small business in the form of lower premiums. It means we in the North will present less risk for insurers, so we’ll have more players in the market. For those in strata, we are also investing $40 million into a North Queensland strata title resilience pilot program.

WALKERSTON BYPASS Work on the long-awaited Walkerston Bypass project will be kicking off next month, and we will all be relieved to see this two-lane rural highway in place, connecting the Peak Downs Highway west of Walkerston to the Mackay Ring Road at Paget. This bypass will take all those heavy vehicles safely away from the village of Walkerston and schools in that vicinity. Key features include a new flood-free bridge over Bakers Creek and three new road overpasses above the local cane railway network.

FIXING THE BRUCE Anyone who has taken a drive on the Bruce recently will know there is an incredible amount of work underway to address the entrance to Mackay, to provide more overtaking lanes, and to improve safety by widening the highway and installing centre-line treatments to reduce the potential for crashes. The latest announcement on work just beginning is $44 million for works between Proserpine and Bowen. This adds to $39 million for safety upgrades under way between Mackay and Proserpine, and $120 million ongoing works on the Mackay Northern Access Upgrade. I thank you for your patience while we get this work done, which ultimately means a safer driving environment for all of us.

BLACK SPOT PROGRAM A fix for the city intersection at Sydney and Alfred streets intersection will be delivered under the 2021–22 Black Spot Program. $503,500 will be invested to modify the roundabout approaches and install new pedestrian refuges with traffic island protection and new signs, making it safer for both motorists and pedestrians to navigate this busy spot.

MANUFACTURING AND BIOFUTURES Regional Jobs and Investment Program (RJIP) - Consolidated Engineering Plastics Products received a $420,000 grant to expand their Diacon conveyor safety systems manufacturing facility in Paget which will mean new local jobs.

Maintenance and construction contractor CQ Field Mining Services awarded $1 million through the Manufacturing Modernisation Fund to transform METS service for future growth which also means new local jobs.

I was fortunate enough to visit the fantastic, job-producing Carmichael Mine project in April this year with Minister for Resources Keith Pitt. At the time they were still excavating dirt, but they have since struck coal! To see a project of this scale that I fought so hard for in full flow, with dump trucks and diggers in perfect unison was very rewarding. And to see the amount of jobs it is producing for locals is even better.

A fishy tale, winner of the Nobel Prize THE ocean and fishing feature heavily in literature from all around the world.

Many novels have been written which revolve around fishing, one of the most notable in Western literature being Earnest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. This short heroic novel published in 1952 earnt the famed author the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The novel also contributed to Hemingway winning the 1954

Nobel Prize for Literature. It was also his last major work of fiction.

The story tells of an aging fisherman who engages in an epic battle to catch a giant marlin.

The main character is an old Cuban fisherman named Santiago, who has not caught a fish for 84 days.

Convinced that his luck must change, Santiago takes his skiff far out into deep waters where he soon hooks a giant marlin.

With all his great experience and strength, he struggles with the fish for three days, admiring its strength, dignity, and faithfulness to its identity; its destiny is as true as Santiago’s as a fisherman.

He finally reels the marlin in and lashes it to his boat.

Seas are around the metre mark but will increase to 1.5m during the day.

Swell is below a metre. Tidal swing isn’t too bad with a 3m-3.5m change between the morning low and the early afternoon high, it’s just the wind that may be the drama.

Drag your butt down IT’S time to rev it up for the Palmyra Drag Racing Club champs round five that will be held over the weekend.

Gates open tomorrow at 3.00pm Keep the Speed off the streets (test & tune) is Friday afternoon from 5.00pm.

Qualifying times will start from 10.00am with the Racing taking place at 2.00am and the finals held at approximately 6.00am.

If you were a lucky winner in Round four and pre-entered then your entry is already done for this round and you do not

have to enter again. There are early start times to avoid the dew in the afternoon/evening.

Spectators/Crew tickets will be available at the gate.

Everyone will be required to check in via QR code at the gate.

Camping is available on site for racers and crew only with a BBQ For racers and crew at the Trophy presentation on Saturday night.

There will be officials visiting to ensure we are all doing the right thing and there will be no grey area when ensuring the rules are adhered to.

Annual Pioneer Valley car show revs up for action

By ANTHONY AZZOPARDI THE Pioneer Valley Classic Car Club brings you our annual Car Show event Dad’s Day in the Valley.

People come through the gates to enjoy the largest family oriented Show and Shine in Mackay Region. covering over five Acres in Railway park precinct along the Main street of Mirani. It is hosted by the Pioneer Valley Classic Car Club, this Show and Shine, event that provides something for everyone in the community.

It is always well attended by Mackay locals as it is held within the Railway Park Precinct along the main street of Mirani. SES, Rural Fires and QPS assist us with the road closure and the event is screened off and detours around the park are in place.

For the past 10 years we have had in excess of 160 exhibits and numerous market stalls, vendors and trade displays and have raised over $120,000 for local charities.

The children are well looked after with the Petting Zoo, rides and jumping castles, and the Pioneer Valley Machinery Preservationists Society will have their old machinery on display,

This is along with numerous food vendors and market stall holders on the day.

Lifeline and all the shops in the Main Street of Mirani are open, along with the Mirani Hotel.

Mayor Greg Williamson will be presenting trophies on the day.

Our trade displays show off their wares, including: Shannon’s Insurance, Drive by Nature, S.E.S and Rural Fires, various Car and Bike Club Displays and Model train display and many more. The vendors, markets and display staff work tirelessly throughout the day to keep everyone fed and happy.

All proceeds this year will go to the Broken Ballerina Foundation.

Hard going WINDY conditions made for hard going in Saturday’s monthly medals at the Proserpine Golf Club. The ladies’ winner was Sherri Meade with 72 nett, from Ann Gardel 77, Tiina Randemae 79 and Marieta Smith 80 on a count back.

The pin shot winner was Lyn Muller. In the men’s comp, Allen Roberts was A grade and overall winner with nett 67. Michael Cragg was runner up on 70. In B grade, Lance Lloyd was the winner on 69 nett and Mick Kavanagh runner up on nett 70.

The C grade was taken out by Sam Marschke, 70, from Craig Hutson on 76.

Cool runners take up Eimeo challenge MACKAY Road Runners enjoyed a very cool start to their Sunday morning with the popular but challenging annual Eimeo Pub 5km, 14km run from the Pub’s carpark precinct.

Commencing from the starter’s hands at 7am, over thirty runners enjoyed the Eimeo Pub’s location and world renowned vistas before commencing the downward trek onto magnificent Mango Avenue towards Dolphin Heads, Blacks Beach and Eimeo Villages.

Club President, Tim Magoffin welcomed new runners and existing club members before advising the very technical course which was very accurately signed and set up by Andrew Short and Tim. The 5km course through to Dolphin Heads and return was flat and fast com-

pared to the 14km event which took runners through the winding streets of Busuttin Avenue and beyond for a tricky loop around the Eimeo State School before linking up via the same course for the return trip to the finish line.

Although the handicap start event had backmarkers, Mick Scholer and Joe Grech wait thirty-five minutes for their start, Joe Grech came storming home first ahead of the rest of the 14km competitors.

Joe and Mick’s performances were impressive as they showed no signs of fatigue after their Townsville Marathon event the previous weekend. Exceptional performances also came from June Bradley, Jo Skinner, Glynis Forse and Jose Short who were involved in 38km and 80km cycling events and 25km and 55km running events at the Eungella

Mackay Mountain Marathon last Sunday.

All runners enjoyed perfect running conditions, although five k’ers were just warming up, then crossed the finish line...race done!

This Sunday’s Mackay Road Runners’ Signature event will be the North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) Open and Podiatry Mackay Junior Magic Mile will commence from the start of the Breakwater.

The Club Championship event also welcomes casual day runners and all members to partake in a quick or slow 800 metre sprint out onto the beautiful breakwater before returning to the finish line. There will be open and junior sections with cash prizes and vouchers for BACKMARKERS: Mick Scholer and Joe Grech winners in each category.

Sarina bowler flirts with history

By RITA HUGHES SARINA bowler Brad Bettiens is believed to have made history by being the first to take out the club’s A and B Grade singles in the same year.

Looking back there is no trace of this happening at least over the past 45 years.

Brad defeated Doug Gidding 25-12 in the A singles after previously beating Ross O’Neil in B singles.

Congratulations to Ivy Henshaw and Clare Stevens for making it through to the semi-final of the Ladies District Champion of Champion Pairs,

unfortunately not winning after going down 24-19.

Men’s 3 Bowl Triples threw up a tight match.

After being 21-all on the 21st end, then having to play an extra end, Dennis Maddern, John Large and Kevin Barnes defeated Reg Stevens, Sam Campion and John Kerr 22-21.

Three new younger bowlers showing their bowls skills, Brodie Boswood, Luke Mills and Jason McMullen defeated Greg Hughes, Col Gleeson and Brad Bettiens 23-16.

Bowl carney THE Annual Proserpine 200’s Bowls Carnival will be played this weekend. Thanks to our major sponsors Hotel Metropole, Bartz’s Plumbing, Cane Country Tyres and Whitsunday Transit for their support of this event. There will 18 teams playing off for $4500 in prize money so it has attracted some top notch bowlers from Mackay through to Cairns. Play will start at 9.00am Saturday morning. The Mens champion of champions pairs was played at South Suburban on the weekend. Unfortunately our team of Nathan Dodds and Scott Hamilton had to withdraw due to illness. The Mackay team defeated The Northern Beaches team in the final.

Tough comp

THE Whitsunday Pearls and Tsunamis faced some tough competition with a double header weekend leading into the final games of the season. Under 12 Pearls took on Wests Roar in round 12, new combinations in the shooting circle showed a lot of promise with the Pearls taking a convincing win, 21-1 against Roar. MVP was awarded to Ella Howson for amazing shooting and feeding the ball into the circle. The shooting circle worked well together but struggled to send the ball through the net in windy conditions. The Pearls eventually went down by 5 goals, 14-19 for only their second loss of the season.

End in sight for Airlie

WITH 22 of the 26 rounds completed in Airlie Darts, and the finish line in sight, there were just four matches this week.

They all had repercussions for fourth place. Three out of the four players who are hotly contesting that fourth spot were in action, with Seamus Rose’s match against Jamie Woods postponed until this week.

First up was Jamie Maher and Nathan O’Hara. Nathan has had a tough first season in the league, but has improved with every match. Last week he arguably played his best game

Last year I made it into Capricornia so I was lucky enough to represent my region in U13 hockey.

Speedway fans in for a treat SPEEDWAY fans are in for a treat this Saturday night from 6pm, when the Bowen Showgrounds roars to life with the sound of 14 Solo motorcycles gunning their engines at the start tape for the Bowen Industrial Hire ‘Bowen Bonanza’.

Supporting the Solos will be a great line-up of Sidecars, Classic Sidecars, Junior Solos and Formula 250 karts.

A great show is assured with the riders all keen to grab a share of the $7000 prize pool. Locals are also well represented among the Formula 250 Karts, with Brett Smith and Jenna Heidke keen to take a few dollars of the prize money from track regulars Kyle and Jason Sondergeld.

The sidecars will put on their usual high adrenaline show, with the showdown between the Brodie Cohen/Josh Murray and Tyler Moon/Adam Lovell outfits being a precursor to the Gary Moon Memorial next month.

“The team at North Queensland Speedway Riders & Supporters Club have been hard at work preparing the track, which is a favourite amongst the riders in the state.

This race meeting is the start of an exciting six-week period for motorcycle racing enthusiasts in the district, with the Don River Dash being run in early September, and the Gary Moon Memorial speedway meeting on 25 September.

“We hope to see lots of spectators out enjoying this event and the others after it,” said club president Matt Pilcher.

Big weekend for ponies THIS weekend will be the biggest weekend for the Sarina pony club holding their annual sporting gymkhana on August 14. The Annual John Arthurs Memorial six Bar starts on completion of the Gymkhana, and the Horse Sports which is open to all non pony club members on Sunday. The competition will be open for juniors U7s all the way up to U26s seniors with a wide range of events to participate in. Jackpot Barrel is in the afternoon and the Sarina pony club will be playing a movie on the outdoor cinema on the Saturday night for all the kids who are camping there on the night. Cash prizes are up for grabs.

HUMP: BMX’ers take to the track

BMX Winter Carnival gets hot MACKAY and District BMX Club’s Walkerston Winter Carnival was held on Saturday.

The day had plenty of fast racing, a few spills and volumes of loud cheering.

Around 200 riders from throughout Queensland competed.

A highlight of the day was the winner of the nine year old Boys Holeshot award, Jett Howe, of Moranbah.

He won a Bike Tracks Australia Jersey.

It was also great to see the return of local Superclass rider Jessica Doring to

racing, after a three year period off the bike.

Joseph Costa of Cairns was the quickest on the day, winning the Redfox Superclass Men. With local riders Tristyn Kronk placing second and Peter Little in third.

In the Walkerston Fuel Superclass Women, a crash in the finals allowed Townsville’s Ashleigh Gunn to take the crown, with Proserpine sisters Isabella Allan in second and Kira Allan in third.

Both Superclass Men and Women competed for a prize pool of $1000 each.

Kuttubul (in green) take on Slade Point

THE final regular season round of Mackay Rugby Union took place over the weekend.

Three big games with finals spots still on the line it was always going to be the most exciting round to date.

In game one, the third placed Kuttabul Camelbok took on fourth placed Slade Point. This was always going to be a close match and it did not disappoint.

Slade Point won a thriller, 26 v 25.

In game two the undefeated Whitsunday Raiders travelled to Mackay to take on Cellar dweller Brothers at Leprechaun Park.

Although Brothers never dropped their effort and intensity, they were outclassed 86 v 7 by a finals bound Raiders.

The third game saw a Grand final rematch held up at the Bowen Recreational reserve. Although Mackay managed to cross late in the match for some consolation points the Mud Crabs took the match 49 v 12 in an exciting showdown.

How long have you been playing with the Wanderers? I played with them from u6s to u12s.

What has been the toughest match this season? This season probably the Sarina Crocodiles.

What is your favourite position to play? probably second row or winger or lock uhh second row because I like to get the ball and tackle and 58 because I like to pass the ball around.

What’s your favourite thing about football? Just hanging out with mates having a ball. It’s an awesome sport just get involved make new friends have fun on the weekend.
