Our brightest stars shine on stage THE stars shone brightly in Mackay last week as hundreds of performers competed in the 74th annual Mackay Eisteddfod. Competitors ranged from the seasoned to the completely inexperienced, and all took to the stage like professionals, eager to make up for time lost as a result of COVID-19 cancelling last year’s event. Thanks to Keeara and Reece Photography, Mackay Local News is thrilled to bring you the pictures. See P32-33
RESPECT: Veterans lay a wreath for the fallen.
Victory Day marked VICTORY in the Pacific Day was marked on August 15 in Mackay. Local leaders, veterans and others gathered to mark the day which celebrates the 1945 victory of the Allied Forces against the Japanese in the Pacific. For Australians, this meant
that the Second World War was finally over. The Pacific War saw some of the largest naval clashes in history and heroic battles were fought by the Australian troops in our backyard. SEE REPORTS PICTURES, P4-5

POLICE SPEAK UP ON CRIME RATE THE latest Mackay region crime stats have been released. This week, Mackay Local News asked residents how they felt about the crime rate
in the region, as part of the weekly Vox Pop and most were concerned about the type and rate of criminal activity in the region. The upshot is that while our police are
doing a great job where they can, residents believe every crime impacts their community. The number of crimes doesn’t matter. STORY, P2. EDITORIAL P10
