Taking us for fuels! Or are Mackay motorists just a bunch of whingers? FUEL prices are on the up and… OUCH! You, dear readers, are not happy at all. Motorists throughout the region are feeling the pinch and making it known. And worse, there’s not a lot that it seems we can do about it when it all stems from a squabble in the Middle East over how much oil each country should be allowed to produce. So, if you ever thought something in the Middle East couldn’t

possibly affect you at the petrol bowser in little old Mackay – you’ve clearly been mistaken! Throughout the state, prices for unleaded, premium unleaded and have spiked during the past few weeks with some servos in Queensland’s South East reporting prices of $1.75 and higher. The Petrol Spy website shows fuel prices ranging from around $1.32 right up to $1.49 a litre throughout our region. When we posted about fuel prices on the Mackay Local News Facebook Page on Wednesday

afternoon, the comments came thick and fast – with most stating there were better prices to be had in locations such as Moranbah and Sarina, while Mackay servos were criticised for their higher prices. Many readers also, understandably, questioned the vast differences in prices servo to servo – often between those within close proximity of each other. RACQ spokeswoman Clare Hunter said “petrol prices are not unusual, compared to the rest of Queensland”. GO TO PAGE TWO

Mine needs to dig deep for our jobs and communities LOCAL Jobs. Local procurement opportunities. Local community investment. It’s a simple mandate, and it is what’s now being called for follow-

ing the announcement this week that Pembroke Resources has secured a $175 million loan provision for its proposed Olive Downs project. The finance provision was ap-

proved by the board of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) this week and comes with a tenor of 10 years, for the development of what’s officially known as the Olive

Downs Steelmaking Coal Complex. Work on the construction of the mine is expected to start this year. GO TO PAGE TWO
