From the Office of the Superintendent Dear Bullfrog Families, I want to send a heartfelt thanks for making our new school year one to remember. While we have all learned new ways to communicate and support our children over the last couple years, we are embracing the new normal of working together to stay safe and ensure our students are learning.

The State of Texas is requiring public schools to provide accelerated learning to all students who have areas in which improvement is needed. Students will receive 30 hours of accelerated teaching and learning with the expected goal of growing instructionally to exceed one year’s growth. We are ready to meet your child’s needs and move them forward socially and academically. The instructional staff is always more effective with parental support and input. Your expectations and continued backing will allow us all to achieve the instructional gains we want for your children.

With the continued concerns related to COVID, we continue to strongly encourage masks.

Within our district we provide cleaning materials for every classroom, and hand sanitizer, and we also remind our students to wash their hands. Our cleaning crews disinfect classrooms each night, along with a disinfectant spray conducted several times each week.

There is a COVID dashboard on the LWISD website for your review. We also send out letters to the elementary classrooms and secondary campuses when there are positive cases. Each campus nurse has the COVID rapid tests and secure rooms should a student or school employee need to test.

Throughout the year we expect some changes to be given from the Texas Education Agency regarding instruction and we will communicate with you the requirements for the Lake Worth Independent School District. Please check your email and social media for updates.

As I visit the campuses, I see happy students who are ready to learn and to enjoy their friends and teachers. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the children and families of Lake Worth ISD. Thank you for sharing your children with us and for your continued partnership.

HELLO FROM MILLER LANGUAGE ACADEMY Hello, Bullfrog Families!

Miller Language Academy has been thrilled to welcome your learners back to campus. We have enjoyed seeing our students grow and explore throughout the start of our school year.

Although last year was challenging, this year we were excited to welcome your families back on campus during our Muffins with Mom event and our first annual Grandparents’ Breakfast.

In the coming months, we have the opportunity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and the return of our Fall Festival on October 15th. Events will include face painting, a photo booth, bounce house, and much more!

In addition, we have implemented a new social and emotional learning curriculum, Character Strong. Character Strong is a program that focuses on cultivating a culture of self-regulation, kindness, and responsible decision making for our students.

LCMS Celebrates Grandparents Day

Friday, September 10, 2021 Lucyle Collins Middle School scholars and staff celebrated Grandparents Day. Grandparents from all over the district and out of town came to celebrate their special day with their grandchildren.

Our families were treated to a pastry breakfast with fresh fruit and hot coffee. LCMS Student Ambassadors and Cheerleaders served as hostess, greeters, and translators.

Our Bullfrog Grandparents were able to share their educational experience when they were in middle school, for example, how did they get to school, what activities were they involved in, their favorite middle school class, and their fondest school memory. Many students learned that their grandparents walked to and from school, what sports or activities that their grandparents participated in, and Grandparents shared they were the star of the girls basketball team and they wore long skirts as a part of their athletic uniform. A few of our Bullfrog Scholars were surprised to learn that their grandparents only went to one school that housed all ages of students.

LCMS recent retiree Mrs. Wilson joined in on the celebration by having brunch with her previous students. Individual photos were taken of each family with a special appearance by our school mascot. The backdrops and cards were created by LCMS Art scholars. Our CIS Department assisted in ensuring a great time was had by all who attended our special event! LCMS scholars and staff will continue to Rise Up and look forward to celebrating many more special occasions and family engagement both in person and virtually.

Howry STEAM Welcomes Grandparents

by Christi Allen Howry STEAM Academy recently hosted a group of special guests—Grandparents!

Students invited their grandparents to visit Howry for a special breakfast in honor of Grandparents’ Day. The event, coordinated by School Counselor Jeanne Chestnut, provided a moment for students and grandparents to connect at school. Howry STEAM Academy values school-family bonds and hopes to make this an annual event. Check out Howry STEAM Academy on Facebook for updates on more upcoming family events.

A Voyage Home

On July 3, 1976, a five-year-old boy was sleepless in a hotel room in Piedras Negras. His grandfather had accompanied him, his mom and two brothers on the trip. The boy longed to go back to his home where his aunts and grandparents lived. He left Hidalgo de Parral, Chihuahua, México. Never to return.

Early the next morning a taxi cab picked up the boy and his family. He said goodbye to his Abuelito. It was a short drive to the bridge with the Rio Grand River flowing below. On the trip the boy was taught by

his mom if asked where he was born to say, “In Pearsall, TX.” At the border the boy was asked where he was born and he responded, “Pearsall, TX.” Within a few hours he was reunited with his father. It had been years since he had seen him. July 4,1976, was a metamorphosis. It was the boy’s independence of less opportunities. In two weeks, he began kindergarten in Henderson, TX. He did not know any English. Not one word. Life was difficult, but the boy overcame. He achieved the American Dream. The boy became a teacher and teaches 5th grade math at Miller. His name is Mr. Rivera.

The Lake Worth Education Foundation has partnered with the community to provide resources to enrich teaching, inspire learning, and maximize innovative opportunities for all students in the Lake Worth Independent School District.

UTA is hosting free virtual SAT Math prep workshops. The workshops are open to all high school students. The platform will be over Google Classrooms. Students will have to register online, have a Gmail account, and have access to a calculator. The first session starts on Saturday, September 18, 2021. There will be English and Spanish presentation available, and mentors will help students sign up for their FSA IDs.
