ΙΙ. Project "Language policy in Ukraine"

Purpose: to find out the essence of the concept of "language policy"; to investigate the history of the formation of language policy in Ukraine; to analyze the peculiarities of language policy formation and implementation at the current stage; trace the two-way influence of language policy on the general development of society.

Algorithm of work on the project: definition of the problem, topic, goal; formation of tasks; grouping; working out the course activity, research options; division of duties; generalization of research results; presentation’s preparation; publication of results; evaluation, mutual evaluation, self-evaluation; reflection.

Project description. To complete the project students are divided into four groups. Group of historians: researches the peculiarities of the formation and implementation of language policy in Ukraine during different historical periods. Group of linguists: clarifies the meaning of the concepts “language policy”, “language planning”, “language education”. Group of lawyers: studies laws, Constitution of Ukraine, normative and legal acts which regulate language policy in the state. Group of politicians: studies the issue of language policy influence on general development of society, Ukrainian-russian bilingualism, possibility/impossibility of functioning of two or more state languages in Ukraine.

The final product. The group of historians presents a video film or multimedia presentation based on research materials. The group of linguists presents the dictionary of terms. The group of lawyers submits for consideration a collection of normative legal acts on the implementation of language policy. The group of politicians suggests ways to improve language policy in Ukraine.

Lesson plan.

I. Introductory speech of a teacher. Announcement of the theme and purpose.

II. Representing the micro-projects.

III. Evaluation of students’ performance. Mutual evaluation. Self-assessment.

IV. Reflection.
