Our Founder:

A family man with a vision. A vision to improve the fortunes of his family. Started out with zero capital, yet Passion in his heart, and worked hard to fulfill his dream to become an entrepreneur. His values were the roadmap to creating a formidable institution, Lumax.

Our Inspiration:

A young lad, the eldest of six siblings, gave a shoulder to his father’s dream from a tender age. He understood his responsibilities early in life and relentlessly worked alongside his father. He spent his days honing his business skills and nights acquiring formal education. He is the man who took Lumax from its nascency to be recognized as a leader in Lighting and live his father's legacy of 'Customer First'.

Journey with a Vision...

Over 75 years of history

The journey of Lumax started in a small 18 feet x 18 feet room at Bahadurgarh in Old Delhi, in preindependent India and today it has become one of the major players in the Indian Automotive Industry.

Our founder, Shri SC Jain, was a man with a Vision. On a fortuitous train journey, Shri SC Jain started talking to another passenger who owned a glass bangle factory in Firozabad. As time went by, they turned from acquaintances to friends.

A little while later, when Shri SC Jain was walking

back from work one day, he noticed the headlights of an imported car, one of the few in the city, was broken. He took the broken glass to Firozabad and asked his friend to make a temporary mould. His friend gave him 100 glass lenses for headlights. He sold it for a handsome profit at Kashmiri Gate market, the largest aftersales market for auto components.

In 1945, he founded a partnership firm called 'Globe Auto' as a trading concern and that's how the journey of Lumax began...

The First Steps

In a short time, from a trading house, Globe Auto became a fully-fledged manufacturing company, with Enfield India and Standard Motors being its first customers. Shri SC Jain further expanded the business, building a strong foundation for Lumax as a Group. Mr DK Jain built on his father’s legacy and expanded the business from a trading company to a conglomerate that has the lion’s share of the market in the Indian Automobile Lighting and Gear Shifter business. Mr DK Jain was just 19 years old when, he joined the company and started travelling and meeting customers. Slowly but surely, he started gaining confidence and built a good rapport with his customers. Standard Motors, Enfield India and Escorts became very important customers, and this led to a long and fruitful business relationships.

Starting with a small order for Telco headlights, the company became a valued partner of Tata Motors and, in mid 1970s, their plant in Pune also helped build their relationship with Bajaj Auto.

By the late 1960s and 1970s, Mr DK Jain had set up the company’s first manufacturing plant at Mayapuri and subsequently at Jamshedpur.

The foundation of ‘Customer First’ approach by Shri SC Jain reflects his attitude where everyone he dealt with was a customer, so he treated everyone with the same Respect and Valued everyone.

Leading Light

When asked to develop relationships with OEMs by Shri SC Jain, Mr DK Jain became the face of Globe Auto and his first customers were Enfield India and Standard Motor Products of India. It was a time of trials and triumphs. But the qualities that carried Mr DK Jain through were his unflagging confidence and his patience and ability to listen.

When Mr John Taylor from Standard Motors admonished him, for quality issues related to Rear View Mirrors, Mr DK Jain stood quiet and kept saying sorry again and again.

Later, Mr Taylor wrote to Shri SC Jain, saying "I must compliment your son and his patience of listening". Mr DK Jain's perseverance, patience and the art of understanding the customer had saved the contract.

Mr DK Jain's Human Resources professor taught him that when people come for interviews, they are usually nervous and bit disoriented entering an unfamiliar environment, hence one should make them comfortable first.

He applied this knowledge later while recruiting people and realised small gestures by him made a big difference. People felt more attached to the company, as they were looked at as individuals and not just as another cog in the machine.

A crisis at Bajaj Auto with its German supplier of headlamps which would take 2 weeks to resolve was eventually resolved within four days when Mr DK Jain's promise to Bajaj Auto of 500 pieces was kept by his Sikh foreman at the Rohtak Road factory, when Mr DK Jain told him he would get him a bottle of whiskey. The motivation was such that the Sikh foreman and his team worked 24 straight hours for four days and got the 500 pieces ready.

CANNOT SAY NO TO THE CUSTOMER

“Once over drinks, Mr Jain in Bajaj Auto, an old stalwart, someone who knew both my grandfather and father, told my father: ‘DK, you are a Jaini, but you still eat non-vegetarian food’ and my Dad, in a lighter vein, said: ‘You never asked me to quit. But since you are my customer, I’ll do this for you.’ And he stopped having non-vegetarian food from that day and hasn’t touched it to this day. That was how deep his customer-centricity was.”

Partnership beyond borders

In 1981, Lumax Industries Private Limited was established after taking over the partnership firm, Globe Auto Industries, and was publicly listed on the stock exchange as Lumax Industries Limited in 1985.

40 Years of partnership with Stanley Electric Co., Japan

Lumax entered into an equity participation with Stanley in 1994. Mr DK Jain also became the president of Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) in the same year.

In 1997, when Hyundai came to India, Lumax tied up with SL Corporation, Korea for a joint venture and set up a plant to cater for 100% of the lighting needs for Hyundai.

When the Japanese entered the two-wheeler (Hero Honda, now Hero MotoCorp) and car segment (Maruti Suzuki India) in the 1980s, they completely revolutionised the technology and thinking of the Indian auto industry. This is when Lumax signed a technical licence with Stanley Electric, the leading lighting makers in Japan.

Owing to this collaboration, Lumax Industries became the single source provider for Maruti Zen, one of the best-selling cars from Maruti stable and became a name to reckon with, in the industry.

The 3 generations of entrepreneurs, believing in the Trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh - the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer. Associating their business very much to the Trinity, their grandfather was the creator, father Mr DK Jain worked hard to preserve it and build it further. but unlike Shiva, the third generation is not the destroyer but the inheritors and custodians of this legacy.

Today, the Lumax-DK Jain Group is a force to reckon with in the automotive sector. Apart from almost four-decade old relationship with Stanley Electric Co. Ltd., the group has many other successful joint ventures and technical agreements with highly regarded companies worldwide.

Travelling the globe, building relationships, establishing partnerships, keeping the philosophy of ‘Customer First’ at its core, Lumax has built long-lasting bonds and associations with its customers and partners in business and beyond.
