EDITOR’S LETTER Hemisfair Park

I AM SO HAPPY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO BEGIN THE NEW YEAR IN SAN ANTONIO! If this is your first time visiting The Alamo City, there are many must-sees to tick off your bucket list, beginning with The Alamo itself. Then wander over to Hemisfair Park and the Tower of the Americas, which, along with an expansion of the lovely River Walk, was built for the 1968 World’s Fair and 250th anniversary of San Antonio’s founding. San Fernando Cathedral, built in 1731, is the oldest standing church in Texas, and Market Square, which is described as the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, has been in its current location since the 1890s. You will also find everything from mariachis and shopping (do not forget to take home some iconic souvenirs) to golf, go-karting and indoor sky diving, and pan dulce and tacos to Dinner Theatre and Restaurant Weeks featuring the city’s most celebrated chefs. Then, if you feel the need to work off San Antonio’s delicacies, try out hiking, cycling, yoga and barre. January’s calendar also includes DreamWeek. Celebrating its 10th anniversary with more than 200 multi-cultural experiences, this 18-day event brings together the many cultures that make San Antonio one of the most diverse cities in the U.S. Thank you for choosing San Antonio as your first destination in 2022. I wish you a bright, healthy and prosperous year!

Culinaria’s Restaurant Weeks

A FEAST FOR THE AGES By Kimberly A. Suta

When the nonprofit, Culinaria, first began, the intention was to create a festive way to bring visitors into our city and showcase local chefs and the amazing culinary talent we have here. They launched Restaurant Weeks in 2010 and it is safe to say that not only is this a great draw for tourists but locals love it just as much. Restaurant Weeks is an exceptional opportunity for diners to sample restaurants they have not visited, particularly fine dining restaurants that might not typically fit into their budget.

HOW IT WORKS Restaurant Weeks is now a bi-annual event (January/ August) that several notable San Antonio restaurants participate in every year. The next event is Jan. 15-29. Culinaria invites you to “dine out and dig in” to these prix fixe threecourse lunch and dinner menus. The set price varies depending upon the style of restaurant, which ranges from casual to fine dining, however, lunch starts at $20 and dinner starts at $35.

Botika

“The restaurants decide what they want to do, but we will guide them, if need be,” explained Ginger Robinson, V.P. of Culinaria. “It is fun to watch the creative process. Sometimes restaurants pick customer favorites and then others take the opportunity to launch a new seasonal menu.”

Since the pandemic, to-go’s are all the rage and that includes Restaurant Weeks. Make sure to check out the website to see the full list of restaurants (including menus) and choose your passion—and keep reading for some of my personal favorites! BIGA ON THE BANK Biga on the Banks is one of the most tried-and-true fine dining restaurants along the River Walk and one of my favorites for a sumptuous meal in a refined setting. For Restaurant Weeks, Biga will be offering a threecourse dinner for $45. Last year’s menu included a variety of options for each course. 12 RIO Magazine

The Tomato Curry Soup with yogurt and mustard seed spinach (1st course), Mustard Crusted Roasted Australian Lamb Rack with Texas cheese grits (2nd course) and their renowned Sticky Toffee Pudding with English custard (3rd course) spoke to me, but truly you cannot choose poorly here. Everything is a superb masterpiece from seasoned chef, Bruce Auden. As an added bonus, they also give you the option to add a wine pairing with each course. BOTIKA Some restaurants located at the Historic Pearl are participating, but you are guaranteed a delicious meal at Botika, one of the top places I like to grab a bite to eat after shopping the Farmers Market on lazy Sunday afternoons. My go-to is always the pork and cabbage dumplings in a black tea sake broth that is so divine I usually require two orders. Botika, led by Chef Geronimo Lopez, is a unique blend of Asian and Peruvian influences. During Restaurant Weeks, you can enjoy a $20 lunch or $45 dinner. Although the menu may vary, last year they offered a daily bento box and house sorbets for lunch and Gyoza, Chicken Chaufa (an aromatic Teriyaki “Brasa” Chicken with fried rice, seasonal wok veggies and corn chalaca) and house sorbets for dinner. SUPPER Supper, located inside Hotel Emma at Pearl, is a jewel unto itself with an elegant dining room that features a countertop table with a view into the kitchen. Chef John Brand makes a concerted effort to source locally, including from Pearl’s Farmers Market vendors. For the previous Restaurant Weeks, Supper featured a $55 prix fixe menu that included Crispy Cauliflower and Sprouts with Caramel Popcorn, Chili Garlic Honey and Muzquiz Peanuts as a starter choice, Country Fried and thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Make sure to visit the website to find out what exciting dishes they have coming up. AZUCA NUEVO LATINO In the Southtown Arts District, you could spend days exploring the Restaurant Weeks’ offerings. Azuca Nuevo Latino, located along South Alamo, has been a hot spot going on two decades for their Latin-inspired cuisine from Chef Rene Fernandez. It is also a popular night spot for their happy hour mojitos and caipirinhas and on the weekends for Latin dancing.

Last year, Azuca had mouths watering for their $35 dinner that featured three different appetizer and entrée choices, including Sopa de Tortilla or Cuban Nachos made with plantain tostones to start and an Argentinean Mix Grill of beef churrasco, chicken breast and jalapeno sausage, gaucho, chimichurri, grilled veggies and mashers as an entrée option. They rounded out dessert with a Coco Flan made with fresh coconut caramel custard and a pina colada sauce. LA FRITE BELGIAN BISTRO Across the street, you will find La Frite Belgian Bistro, another cozy restaurant that locals and visitors adore. Sitting at one of the patio tables feels like you have been whisked away on a mini-European vacay. They are known for their exceptional mussels, so as you might imagine, they are usually on their Restaurant Weeks’ menu. Last August, they offered both lunch and dinner. Lunch included their Mussels Mariners Provençale, Pork Parmesan Coq au vin and Chocolate Mousse. I would say to make sure to save room for dessert, but you know it is coming!

MAVERICK TEXAS BRASSERIE Finally, just around the corner, Maverick Texas Brasserie is one of the newest restaurants to grace Southtown and offers thoughtfully curated menus of scratch-made French-inspired cuisine influenced by Texas flavors and ingredients. They are reliably delicious with excellent service for dinner, brunch, curbside and delivery. They recently launched a new happy hour, which takes place every day from 4:00 to 6:00pm with discounted beer, wine, spirits and a few nibbles. For Restaurant Weeks last year, they wowed the crowd with a $35 dinner menu that included Gazpacho or a Mixed Green Salad for appetizers, Seared Lake Trout, Crispy Pork Belly or Duck Confit Leg for the main option (now, that is a tough choice!) and Cheesecake with hazelnut streusel and strawberry coulis or Chocolate Marquis with Chantilly cream for dessert. Make a list and check it twice, because Restaurant Weeks is back, baby!

FAMILY FUN

By Janis Turk

Stay inside. Play Inside. Keep Warm. Enjoy active, indoor, mid-winter thrills if a cold front heads our way.

16 RIO Magazine

Some think of December as being the dead of winter, but actually January and February generally are months most likely to bring on the big chill, like last year when Texas had that gorgeous snowfall… and that big bad freeze. Of course, many January days in SA are bright and sunny, but if by chance a cold blue norther blows in, it is best to have a backup plan for warm winter fun on a frosty day. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

GO GO-KART CRAZY! Andretti Indoor Karting & Games is a real game-changer for a winter day with the kids! Race on over to this enormous amusement hub with classic and modern arcade games, a huge multi-level go-karting track, bowling lanes and a kid-friendly casual restaurant. There are so many thrilling games, rides and excitement-filled activities waiting for the family, including zip-lining, rock climbing and a rope obstacle course. There is also a full-immersion experience called the Dark Ride Motion Theater. With good eats for the kiddos and a full-service bar called Skybar for adults, Andretti is also a great place for an indoor birthday party. You will not believe how impressive the go-cart track is. So zip on over to Andretti and see.

TEE UP! Dads, moms and kids alike love golf, and what better place to practice your swing this winter than at one of the 100+ climate-controlled hitting bays at Top Golf San Antonio? Top Golf also offers a full-service restaurant and bars, more than 200 HDTVs, free Wi-Fi, a rooftop terrace with a fire pit, private event spaces and meeting rooms and a big “Game Hall” arcade with new and retro-style games. Dads seem to really love this place, so keep it in mind this summer when Father’s Day rolls around, too.

FLY THE FRIENDLY SKIES! Have you always wanted to fly? Me, too! Now you can. At iFLY San Antonio, the ultimate thrill is riding the wind in a specially-designed wind tunnel that offers everyone an awesome indoor skydiving experience. Flyers ages three on up (the sky is the limit) can enjoy indoor skydiving, be they beginners or near expert-level repeat fliers. Folks of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities can take flight. It takes no athletic skill, just a love of thrill-seeking fun. iFLY is manned with welltrained, world-class instructors who are experts at making flying fun for everyone. They guide you through orientation and teach the basics of indoor skydiving. Then fliers will receive a flight suit and helmet and take their turns in the wind tunnel where an instructor will stay with fliers throughout the flight duration. Best of all, indoor skydiving is both limitless and inclusive, so regardless of physical or cognitive challenges, everyone has the opportunity to indoor skydive. Call ahead for more information on the All-Abilities program.

LET GO OF MY LEGO! Other fun places to spend a cold winter day include LEGOLAND Discovery Center located at the Shops at Rivercenter, where kids can enjoy the ultimate indoor LEGO® playground, interactive flight-like rides including the Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice and Mini Land with replicas of iconic San Antonio landmarks. Create megaawesome LEGO creations with other kids and learn building tips from a LEGO “Master Model Builder.” Families may want to spend an entire day here, but there are also other fun things to do nearby, like discover the world underwater right next door at the new SEALIFE San Antonio. Then enjoy a meal and arcade games at a fun family restaurant like Dave & Busters at Rivercenter, with wall-to-wall television screens, billiards, bowling and virtual reality games, and good old-fashioned American eats that the kids will love, including wings, pizza, mac-and-cheese, burgers and fries and more. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

FAMILY FUN

AMERCIAN FOOTBALL AT ITS FINEST Finally, another fun event to look forward to will take place this month on Saturday, Jan. 8, and that is the annual U.S. Army AllAmerican Bowl, which once again will be held at the Alamodome. This annual high school football game is played between all-star teams representing the eastern and western United States. Except for last year during the pandemic, the All-American Bowl has been held in San Antonio each year since 2002. In fact, 17 Heisman finalists have played in the All-American Bowl, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and former Alabama running back Derrick Henry. As of 2012, more than 175 Army All-Americans have gone on to play for the NFL. The game brings 90 of the nation’s top high school football players. In addition to the Bowl game, your family will enjoy the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band, featuring 125 of the nation’s top high school marching musicians who perform during halftime.

BUNDLE UP So, if a cold front heads our way this month, bundle up the kids, pile in the car and enjoy a cool weekend staying warm and playing hard at any one of these exciting San Antonio spots. Perfect PAIRINGS Peanut butter and jelly, peas and carrots, bacon and eggs. All of these

By Lakendra Lewis

are perfect pairings but there is no doubt one pairing is the most perfect: dinner and a show. This month, we are going to offer some suggestions on a few places in town where you might go for a nice dinner and a show. And maybe even find yourself getting into the act!

DINNER OUTSIDE THE BOX Remember when your parents told you not to play with your food? Well, now you can enjoy a play… with your food whenever you make a reservation at some of the local restaurants to watch members of the Company Theatre get up to all sorts of wacky hijinks while you dine and take in the show. This zany troupe, founded by veteran actor Damien Gillen, has been traveling the countryside for more than 25 years—10 of which have been in collaboration with Little Italy restaurant as part of the Dinnerbox Series—that presents live comedic plays at local restaurants. This month, the Company Theatre will present an encore performance of the hit one-man show, An Evening with Mark Twain. Known as America’s most celebrated humorist and greatest authors, Gillen brings the titular character of Twain to life in a show that is only one of many that have been done at Little Italy and The Lion & Rose restaurants over the years. “We just thought it would be a perfect pairing. What if I brought my touring show into a restaurant?” Gillen said of the initial idea to take the show from the stage to the dining room. “It is a small, intimate space and we tried it out and it just exploded. People just come back again and again.” The shows the Company Theatre presents, most of which are family-friendly, tend to sell out fast due to word of mouth. The troupe has a mailing list of more than 2,000 people and rarely advertises, making it, in Gillen’s words, “the best kept secret in San Antonio.”

20 RIO Magazine

Dinner/show combos are $40 at the door or can be ordered online. All proceeds go to the repair and restoration of The Humbus, the troupe’s 1971 Volkswagen Campmobile that needs $1,000 worth of repairs. This past year, the troupe presented several plays, including their annual Halloween production, The Mystery of Irma Vep; The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), with all 37 plays done by three actors in 87 minutes; and two Christmas shows, Bah Humbug! - A One-Man Christmas Carol in which Gillen, who adapted the play

from the Dickens novel, portrays all of the characters; and Merry Christmas, George Bailey! a version of It’s a Wonderful Life that pays homage to the classic days of radio.

In the meantime, Gillen is always on the lookout for other restaurants that would like to participate in giving patrons the chance to have a play… with their food.

Upcoming shows at Little Italy and The Lion & Rose include another original one-man production with Gillen called The History of Texas… in One Darn Easy Lesson!, a hysterical, historical, hyperactive hayride through 500 years of Texas in 5,000 seconds, now in its seventh year of touring Texas. The troupe will also have its annual “FUNdraiser” show that has yet to be announced.

“This is the love of my life, and we are making [audiences] laugh,” Gillen said. “Ninetyfive percent of our shows are comedies and we want to make people happy, and that is why they come back.”

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

THE DINNER DETECTIVE If you have ever fancied yourself an amateur sleuth, be sure to check out America’s largest interactive comedy murder mystery show right here in San Antonio. This show gives audiences the opportunity to put on their figurative trench coats and fedoras and solve a hilarious mystery while feasting on a fantastic meal. But do not get full too fast. You will need your wits about you to nab the murderer who is somewhere in the room seated amongst the dinner guests. Who knows? You might even be the prime suspect. Located in the Sheraton Gunter Hotel on East Houston Street, the performance is not for children. It contains some mild adult humor and does not offer up your typical dinner theatre who-dun-it, as the actors are not dressed in costume but are hidden in plain sight in the audience. Not so elementary, dear Watson! In addition to the entertainment and full-course meal that includes an appetizer, main dish and dessert, the price of admission also includes waitstaff gratuity, a prize package for Top Sleuth and a cash bar. The company also specializes in custom private events. Performance dates are posted 8-12 weeks in advance. Visit the show’s website for ticket pricing, menu details and more.

GREAT FINDS Historic Market Square

Taking Home Something to Remember By Dawn Robinette

Whether it is the beauty of the River Walk, the history of the Missions or the screaming roller coaster thrills at SeaWorld® San Antonio or Six Flags® Fiesta Texas, time in San Antonio is always memorable. Spend any amount of time in San Antonio and it is hard to leave, but saying, “See you again, soon,” is easier when you are taking home the perfect souvenir. While you cannot bottle the friendly, relaxed atmosphere or the rich history and culture that span more than 300 years or the River Walk, the right memento can mentally bring you back to San Antonio any time you look at it or wear it. To spark memories of San Antonio, be sure to take home something as special as your visit. 24 RIO Magazine

Visit San Antonio Shop

There is no better way to top off a San Antonio visit than claiming the ultimate crown, a classic hat from Paris Hatters. Stepping into this family-owned and operated shop is like stepping back in time. The cash register has been in service since the 1930s and the buffalo and bison heads that adorn the walls are throwbacks to a Texas of long ago. But there is nothing dated about the classic hats you will find covering every surface of the shop, which is what brings everyone from presidents to princesses to Paris Hatters to find just the right look. With the largest inventory in the country, there is no doubt you will find the perfect hat, too. The color and style are up to you, but the talented team at Paris Hatters will help you get just the right fit and be sure that the hat you take home with the famous Paris Hatters logo on the inside is one you will treasure for years.

If flower crowns and all things festive are more your style, a short hop away lands you in a spot teeming with color—Historic Market Square. With multiple shops, great finds, fantastic food and atmosphere, a trip to Market Square resembles shopping at a street market in Mexico. That is because it is the largest Mexican market outside of Mexico, with terrific imports and shopping set to the tune of Mariachi music and the tantalizing smells of various restaurants and food booths. And do not miss El Mercado, where you will find shop after shop with colorful linens and textiles featuring fantastic Mexican embroidery, as well as pillows and the cutest handstiched animals that will bring memories of San Antonio with every snuggle. Pottery, blankets, glassware and gleaming metalwork allow you to add a bit of San Antonio to your decor. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

For metalwork designed to add sparkle to every outift, Plaza Taxco, located in Market Square, features stunning jewelry from Taxco, Guerrero in Mexico. All of the pieces are handcrafted from locally sourced silver mines in Taxco, a “Pueblos Magicos,” or magic town, known for its sublime silver work. The pieces feature both a vintage style and a modern flair and never fail to capture collectors’ eyes. The dizzying assortment makes it hard to choose; each treasure is more exquisite than the next. The craftsmanship, paired with the quality of the metal, combines to create jewelry sure to become a must the moment you try it on. Do not miss the stunning earring and necklace sets, adding a polished look to any outfit. 26 RIO Magazine

You’ll also find Plaza Taxco in La Villita, a cornucopia of shops and restaurants housed in historic buildings shaded by tall oaks, just off of the River Walk. The area’s present harkens to its past: the artisans and craftspeople who fill La Villita have electricity and modern comforts, but they are selling their crafts the same way that shop owners and tenants did in the late 1800s. In other words, the souvenirs you will find here are unlike anything you will find anywhere else. The shops nestled in La Villita are a virtual kaleidoscope of the color, artistry, culture and flair. With clothing, jewelry, artwork, décor and more, La Villita offers memories to take home, or the perfect gift to share San Antonio with someone you love. Stop by River Art Group for an array of local artists’ works to take home. Of course, everyone knows the cry, “Remember the Alamo!”, and there is no better way to do that than by snagging a memento from the Shrine of Texas Liberty, the Alamo itself. The Alamo gift shop carries a collection of goods with the iconic silhouette of the Alamo chapel, including socks that feature the Alamo so you can literally walk in history! Do not miss the fantastic books that share more of the Alamo’s story, and who can resist a replica coon-skin cap? Bonus: purchases at the Alamo help raise funds for the building’s preservation, ensuring the Alamo is around for future generations to enjoy. No one knows San Antonio better than the San Antonio Official Visitor Information Center, so it

is no surprise that they also feature an array of souvenirs guaranteed to keep your love of San Antonio burning bright. Located just across from the Alamo itself, the center is a great resource for visitors and locals alike. When you are stopping in to learn what cool things you cannot miss as you enjoy San Antonio, you will be distracted by the center’s selection of books, pottery and clothing. You will also find artists’ prints and a great collection of Christmas ornaments, available year-round for those who like to celebrate their favorite spots by hanging memories on their holiday trees. Decade of dreamS By Susan Yerkes

San Antonio is a city of dreams, and DreamWeek brings those dreams together. The diversity of this place, where adventurers under six different flags brought their hopes for new beginnings, is reflected in the colorful swirl of cultures you will find here. Native Americans, Spanish, Germans, French, Irish and other settlers from around the world have come here seeking freedom and prosperity, and stayed to build new lives—and they are still coming.

Today San Antonio is one of the fastest growing and most diverse cities in the United States. That makes it the perfect place for January’s DreamWeek.

DREAMWEEK HIGHLIGHTS

DreamVoice Kick-Off Breakfast DreamWeek is not a week. This year, the 10th anniversary, it extends over 18 days, from Jan. 13-30, encompassing more than 200 multi-cultural events and activities that bring people from all walks of life together to learn their similarities and discuss their differences in peace. More than 150 different community organizations are involved. All of the events are open to everyone, and most of them are free of charge. It all started with an immigrant with big dreams. Shokare Nakpodia came to the U.S. from Nigeria in the 1990s. From New York he moved to San Antonio, where he founded a successful marketing and design firm. When a mayor appointed him to a volunteer commission on diversity, he became fascinated with the fact that San Antonio, where less than 10 percent of the population is Black, has one of the biggest annual Martin Luther King marches in the country. He started to imagine a way to bring people together to communicate across cultural divides about the issues King cared about— tolerance, justice and equality for all, and DreamWeek was born. Today DreamVoice LLC, which Nakpodia founded, manages the ambitious annual program. This year’s theme is “The Future.” From the DreamHour Speaker Series and provocative DreamPanel discussions to a fancy Mayor’s Ball, concerts, ethnic markets, fashion shows and sports—even a “Million Push-Up Challenge,” this year’s events range wide. But the heart of DreamWeek is the focus on inspiring dialogue, promoting new ideas and bringing people together in peace. “The underlying question for the future is: ‘Can we learn to get along?’” Nakpodia said. “We have to come together regardless of gender or religion or politics, and work towards this common goal that has been a beacon to the rest of the world. The world needs to see what it is like when people of different backgrounds live together. We are better together. And if you break bread with someone, or share the same dish, it is much harder to hate.”

CULTURE & COMMUNITY

DreamWeek’s schedule includes much breaking of bread together. The festivities open with a kick-off breakfast at the Briscoe Museum of Western Art, a historic, magnificently re-purposed library in the heart of the River Walk, where the Old West and New West come to life. A different kind of sharing will be spotlighted at “1000 Plates for the Hungry,” where church congregants and volunteers from all over will distribute food to some of San Antonio’s poorest residents. People in hijabs and yarmulkes, saris and New York runway styles and Indonesian batik sit side-by-side at lunches or panels in venues all over town, from historic neighborhoods to sleek modern buildings. College students in sweatshirts and businessmen in handsome suits share space and ideas. Recent immigrants and seventh-generation Americans share ideas and stories. If America is a melting pot, DreamWeek stirs the ingredients together. “Ten years ago we talked about diversity and civil civic engagement,” Nakpodia said. “Many thought it was idealistic. Now I think many people realize how important that is. We propose in the next 10 years to learn to map and strategize collectively for the future. This year we will focus on conflict resolution. We will allow people to adventure and mix a little more, in environments they have never been to through fear or insecurity or lack of education. A Jewish religious celebration, a Scottish dance, a Nigerian restaurant…during DreamWeek these places are safe to try. The more people we have out there, willing to engage with those they may disagree with, the more likely there will be a spark that will germinate and change all our lives.” WRITER’S BIO Susan Yerkes is an award-winning journalist and travel writer. She has traveled around the world and written about the most interesting places, from Patmos, Greece to Kota Kinabalu, Borneo. She came home to San Antonio, where she is based. She loves the history and diversity, and looks forward to the future.

Hop On-Hop Off! The iconic red, double-decker City Sightseeing© Trolleys are undeniably the most fun way to explore downtown San Antonio. But they are also the most convenient and informative way to visit all of the fabulous attractions in The Alamo City. City Sightseeing is the world’s leading Hop OnHop Off trolley tours, in more than 130 cities across Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, Canada and the U.S. After reviewing many destinations throughout the country, operations began in San Antonio in December of 2010, and the fun never stops! The unique Hop On-Hop Off concept allows visitors to experience the complete tour of downtown San Antonio, which takes about an hour, then design their own personal itinerary. “That in fact is what many of our riders do. They ride the route once to see all the stops and then on the next trip around, they get off at the stops they are interested in seeing,” says David Strainge, Owner of City Sightseeing San Antonio. Tours begin at the Welcome Center in Alamo Plaza and include 19 stops located near the most popular attractions in downtown San Antonio. With the help of informative tour guides providing live narration, visitors

receive comprehensive descriptions of both entertainment and historic venues along the route. “We really have a great group of driver/ tour guides. Each of them provides a great tour but with their own individual style and energy. They all mix in a bit of humor and entertainment, which the riders love. It is certainly about the history of San Antonio but it is also about providing a fun and entertaining experience for everyone,” says Strainge. Armed with this information, visitors can choose to begin the day at The Alamo and then venture to other world-famous attractions like Tower of the Americas, La Villita and Market Square. Or explore historic neighborhoods surrounding downtown, such as Southtown, King William and Pearl with their flourishing culinary scenes. Perhaps family-friendly attractions are on the agenda. The possibilities are limitless, and with buses conveniently picking up at each stop every 20 minutes, between 8:40am and 5:30pm, it’s easy for visitors to set their own timelines.

If your visit to San Antonio spans a few days, simply select between 1-, 2-, and 4-day passes (Purchase two days and get your third day free!). Or check out the variety of tour packages available. City Sightseeing has partnered with many downtown San Antonio attractions so adding a River Boat Cruise and a trip up the Tower is a must. Private tours are also available. Whether visitors choose to ride in the climatecontrolled lower level or experience 360-degree panoramic views with an open-air experience from the upper level, the most enjoyable and comfortable way to explore historic downtown San Antonio is aboard a City Sightseeing Trolley. And all trolleys are fully ADA Compliant and handicap accessible.

Discover Timeless Hospitality at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk Hotel Valencia Riverwalk is a 213-room luxury boutique hotel perfectly situated near fine dining, shopping and entertainment. Enjoy contemporary and stylish rooms and suites, superior amenities, fine dining in a chic setting and the utmost comfort during your stay on the scenic San Antonio River Walk. Whether you are on a leisure vacation, a romantic getaway or a business trip, Hotel Valencia Riverwalk offers an unforgettable experience. In October 2021, Hotel Valencia Riverwalk earned the honors of being named the #1 hotel in San Antonio and the #15 hotel in Texas in the Condé Nast Traveler’s 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards. The Hotel Valencia Riverwalk has earned its reputation as being the most sophisticated hotel in San Antonio by doing one thing very, very well: keeping its guests consistently indulged. The team at Hotel Valencia strives to make every aspect of your visit memorable — from relaxing in a beautifully appointed suite, to sipping a signature cocktail or glass of wine in one of the hotel’s bars, Dorrego’s and Naranja, or enjoying a meal at San Antonio’s only Argentinean-influenced restaurant, Dorrego’s. Hotel Valencia Riverwalk’s design and décor concept provides an alluring blend of Spanish Colonial and Modern Mediterranean styles. The Spanish Colonial influence represents a nod to San Antonio’s Spanish Colonial heritage dating back to the time the Missions were built, while the Modern Mediterranean flair reflects the building’s Tuscan-style architecture and the hotel’s namesake, Valencia, Spain.

Upon entering the hotel from the street, guests are greeted by a striking fountain under a dramatic staircase with custom wrought-iron railings and hand-stenciled tile risers. The stairs, as well as the elevators behind the water feature, lead to the second-floor lobby and public spaces of the hotel. Do not let the phrase “boutique hotel” fool you; there is nothing flashy or ostentatious here. The skillfully trained and attentive staff are available to attend to guests’ every need. The hotel offers such amenities as 7,000 square feet of meeting space, wedding and event venues, catering in a refreshing open-air courtyard and in-room spa services. DORREGO’S – AN ARGENTINEAN-INSPIRED DINING EXPERIENCE Dorrego’s is named for the famed Plaza Dorrego, a popular public square located in the historic San Telmo neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The restaurant draws its inspiration from the rich culinary heritage of Argentina. The innovative menu showcases fresh, local ingredients and an imaginative approach to steaks, seafood, fowl and more. The gastronomic influences drawn from

Argentina’s Spanish, Italian and French heritage are evident in the menu’s selections. The restaurant’s décor reflects the Spanish Colonial design and architectural heritage of Argentina, with a touch of Parisian bistro panache. It features Argentinean-style tile work and woods with dark metal accents. Dorrego’s also features a popular restaurant bar and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. After dinner service nightly, Dorrego’s offers an appealing small bites menu along with handcrafted cocktails, wine and beer. The restaurant also provides 24-hours-a-day room service for hotel guests. Just outside Dorrego’s is the hotel’s elegant stone terrace showcasing gorgeous views of the River Walk lined with giant cypress trees. The tastefully furnished outdoor space provides an ideal backdrop for an evening of pleasure and relaxation.

The Alamo

A MEMORABLE MISSION We are starting the list off with one of the most memorable San Antonio spots—The Alamo. Admission to this Texas history gem is free, but it is so much more than the church with the famous façade. At more than 300 years old, the long barrack is the Alamo’s oldest building, and the grounds house plenty of photo ops with bronze statues of Alamo heroes. You can also snap a pic with the largest surviving cannon from the infamous battle. The Alamo is a great little outdoor stroll with a topnotch Texas swag gift shop.

Chart House Restaurant at the Tower of the Americas

DAY 1

BEST VIEWS Nothing tops the bird’s-eye view of the city from the Tower of the Americas. Soaring above Hemisfair, this picturesque panorama is elevated even more with drinks and dinner. Feast on filet mignon and crunchy coconut shrimp at Chart House Restaurant, or just toast to happy hour at Bar 601.

THE RIVER WALK It is not a trip to SA without a stroll down the river. The San Antonio River Walk has been the backdrop to movies, weddings and family photo ops for decades. You can grab a beer from CVS near the Rainforest Cafe, and walk along the banks drinking in the open container lifestyle. Or take a ride on the GO RIO boats to get a guided tour of the iconic waterway. TEXAS EATS No matter if you walk or ride, you will inevitably cross a string of restaurant options. But smack dab in the middle of the action is the classic Texas bistro, Boudro’s. I could point you to the pollo asado or the shrimp and grits. But the real star of the menu is the tableside guacamole. There is no way to complete a San Antonio bucket list without witnessing the sultry smash of an avocado before your very eyes. Hit that prickly pear margarita while you people watch from one of the best spots on the river. FOR DESSERT Follow the sounds of the Mariachis to one of the best bakery cases in San Antonio. For 80 years, Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia has beckoned visitors and locals with its fabulous dulces and festive decor. Toss what you think you know about pumpkin spice out the window and try the dulce de calabaza.

DAY 2

El Mercado

STORYTIME  It is a sight to behold when the San Fernando Cathedral lights up with The Saga. The artistic projection is a gorgeous visual journey through our city’s history, and it is completely free to behold. On Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, when the sun sinks behind the horizon, people gather in the plaza as the cathedral is painted with the colorful story of San Antonio. TO MARKET TO MARKET You need your own molcajete. Trust me. And Market Square is by far the most fun place to shop for one. El Mercado is home to locally-owned shops with all the Mexican and Southwest wares you could want. Although this area’s days as a dedicated produce market are over, the outdoor vendors still hook it up with fresh fruit cups and cucumbers drizzled with chamoy and chile. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

TACO ‘BOUT IT  There is no shortage of amazing tacos in this city, but one of the newbies on the scene takes the creativity up a notch. Velvet Taco is slinging fresh, mind-blowing little pockets of flavor that step outside the Tex-Mex taco shell. It is an international smash up with tikka chicken and Korean fried rice, as well as plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options. The 10/10 is the slow-roasted angus brisket taco with a crispy cheeseencrusted tortilla. Wash it down with a fresh Paloma or a Ranch Water. SHRIMP BOAT  The only thing better than Shrimp Paesano, is Shrimp Paesano on a river boat. Paesano’s is a River Walk staple, but one of the most unique ways to experience this Italian stallion is aboard a floating dinner barge. Make your reservations in advance. RIO Magazine

DAY 3 Get Wild Today, we pay a visit to Timothy and Uma, the celebrity hippos at the San Antonio Zoo. The SA animal adventures have been rockin’ around since the 1800s, and the zoo now sees more than 1 million guests each year. In the summer of 2019, Kiddie Park relocated to the zoo for an even more family-friendly day of nostalgia. Beyond The Brews The Historic Pearl Brewery is a crown jewel of the city, now simply known as Pearl. With its roots in craftsmen like stone masons, barrel builders and brewers, the now hipster hub of restaurants, storefronts, market vendors and swank hotel stays still honors the site’s historic dedication to craft, quality and hard work. It Takes A Village You need only hike the steps of the historic amphitheater on the River Walk to reach the little village at La Villita. It is part artsy village, part historic site. And no worries, if you are not up for the stair climb, you can reach all the shops and galleries from the street level as well. BBQ Pit Stop If you thought you could get out of a Texas city without Texas barbecue, you thought wrong. We are diving into the land of meat-by-the-pound and scratch-made sides at Pinkerton’s Texas Pit Barbecue. Load up on prime rib brisket, jalapeno sausage and dry rub pork ribs. Or just get a Man Bear Pig sandwich and a side of rosemary bacon mac and cheese, so you can tell your friends you went to that barbecue place from the Travel Channel and Food Network. 38 RIO Magazine

A Final Toast We are making a final to cast to toast the German Texas roots of our city at Little Rhein Prost Haus. Just off the river in a centuryold building is the wurst place to grab a beer and a taste of Bavaria. On the very grounds General Santa Anna had his encampment, you can raise a half liter of Hoegaarden and toast to the completion of your San Antonio bucket list.
