The art and design department has a long history of success and a strong reputation within the school and local community. Achievement at GCSE and A-Level is of a high standard with students progressing onto a range of art and design courses at university. Pupils have continued to experience a diverse range of extra-curricular activities which promote creativity and inspire and reward achievement, including regular lunchtime craft and photography clubs, in-house workshops, visiting artists/designers and trips to galleries and places of interest. Venues recently visited include the British Museum, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bradford Media Museum, Kew Gardens, Twycross Zoo, the V&A, Chatsworth House, Manchester Museum of Costume and the Knitting and Stitching Show. Pupil success is celebrated by holding an annual art and design exhibition which includes exam candidates’ work and selected pieces from younger girls. Winning pieces from our annual house art competition are also shown. This year we had the pleasure of welcoming the Mayor of Charnwood to our exhibition as well as friends, relatives, and parents. It is a fabulous showcase for the department and for recognising the achievements of the pupils. Our textiles collection at the annual Leicestershire Schools’ Fashion Show is always well received and highly publicised. LHS Life | October 2013 | 5
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award LHS has enjoyed another successful Duke of Edinburgh season with more girls than ever signing up for the award at all levels. This year has seen the awarding of our 200th Gold Award, a significant milestone in the history of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at LHS. Congratulations and huge thanks to Miss Todd whose involvement in D of E over the last 30 years is to be recognised at Buckingham Palace later this term.

This was taken on the first morning of the qualifier expedition. During the night a badger had entered the camp, dragged a rucksack from the outer tent and devoured one girl’s entire food supply!

The end of an era: our 2013 leavers joined with their peers from LGS, parents and staff from both schools to bid farewell to LES at the Leavers’ Ball in July, only to return to celebrate their academic successes at the annual Senior Prize Giving in September. The guest of honour this year was Old Girl, and former deputy head girl, Ms Liz Warner, founder and CEO of the TV production company betty. Also pictured is the joint leavers’ musical, an exuberant performance of Back to the 80s and an informal year 13 group on the girls’ last day in school.
