Why I Give

“I came to Loughborough in 1955 to attend the University, then called the College of Advanced Technology, to study Aeronautical Engineering Whilst studying I met Joan in 1958 and married in 1959 the day after I graduated.

Joan was a pupil at LHS from 1947 to 1953 and had many stories to tell about her school days, which I learnt about in the 62 years we were married She made friends easily and there were two special friends she met at school with whom she kept in touch with for the rest of her life

During the COVID crisis, Joan received a letter inviting her to contribute to the Completion Fund, set up to help support pupils whose parents were suffering financially because of COVID Joan’s happy times at school and a visit that had left a good impression prompted her to make a positive response, and a donation was sent and acknowledged Then in October 2021, a letter arrived giving the total raised for the Fund, stating how it had helped so many pupils and inviting Joan to the annual Tableaux and Carol Service Sadly, Joan had lost her battle with cancer about two weeks prior to receipt of the letter The letter triggered the idea in my mind that more help to the School would be a fitting tribute to my beloved wife and be of great benefit to LHS and its pupils Several conversations later, having discussed various

options, I decided to support a young lady in the Sixth Form for two years This was discussed with my two adult children who summed up the situation by saying “This would be a much more meaningful memory of our Mum than a lump of granite with her name on it in a memorial garden”

Late in 2022, the first Joan Davis Scholar wrote summarising her first term As well as being a talented young lady, it was clear she was being well taught and encouraged to pursue a variety of interests, some of which involved helping junior pupils in the School My perception of LHS being a real quality education establishment increased and spurred me to fund a second Joan Davis Scholar to start in September 2023

has been a bright light in the complete darkness of these challenging times, not just for Yara but for all of us. Knowing she is safe, happy and thriving is a profound relief for our family.”

The impact of Yara’s scholarship is evident in every aspect of her life. Her determination to learn English through EAL classes has unlocked her potential in the classroom, enabling her to participate fully in lessons and make remarkable progress. Her growing confidence has also sparked a passion for subjects like Computer Science, Art, and Maths, which she hopes to study at A Level Yara also became a member of the High Academic Potential Pupils club at LAS, where she presented her project at a special presentation evening

Beyond academics, Yara has found joy and expression in the Arts A talented dancer, she captivated the audience with a stunning solo performance at the LSF Dance Show, showcasing her creativity and performance skills. She has also joined a range of cocurricular activities, including the Newspaper Club and the Art Club, as well as being on the Handball and School Library teams.

Tom Rees, Head of LAS Upper School, notes: “Yara actively participates in a wide range of co-curricular activities, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment in everything she does Her contributions to the School community are truly inspiring”

For Yara and her family, the Scholarship has been life changing Roman explains: “Thanks to you and the Sisters of Providence, our lives are much better than they would have been if Yara couldn’t attend Loughborough Amherst School Your support helps our family sustain itself and live in peace, knowing that the most vulnerable member of our family is thriving. We are forever grateful.”

Robert’s Story

When Robert (LGS 2018) first attended The Foundation’s Masterclass programme as a 10-year-old, he was captivated by the opportunities at Loughborough Grammar School The vibrant classrooms, the buzzing debates, and the chance to push boundaries inspired him However, for Robert, whose family couldn’t afford the fees, attending LGS seemed like an impossible dream That didn’t stop him With the quiet determination of a child who had glimpsed his future, Robert went home, printed out the application forms for the School and for a bursary, filled in what he could, and handed them to his mother with one question: “Can we see if it is possible for me to attend LGS?”

Thanks to the generosity of donors who funded his bursary, Robert’s dream became a reality. “Attending LGS changed the course of my life,” he reflects. “I am incredibly thankful that people have provided such significant donations that have given me the opportunity to benefit from an incredible educational experience.”

At LGS, Robert threw himself into every opportunity. From debating competitions to STEM challenges, House events to choir rehearsals, he found joy and purpose in exploring new horizons “What I enjoyed most about LGS was the sheer variety of opportunities it offered,” he says “My fondest memories include debating competitions, House events, and

entering countless STEM-related competitions – all moments that built lasting friendships and taught me the value of teamwork and perseverance ”

One of Robert’s proudest moments was organising a STEM week during his GCSEs. Determined to make it unforgettable, he invited top names ranging from a Nobel Prize winner to the Secretary of State for Education, TV presenters and the Lord Mayor Over 30 accepted. “I’m not quite sure how the Headmaster and staff agreed

to it on reflection,” Robert recalls, “but LGS gave me their complete support and backing to pursue the areas I was passionate about” The event was a success, and his confidence in leading and creating grew

LGS instilled in Robert values that have shaped his life and career

“LGS taught me resilience, adaptability, and how to make the most of every opportunity,” he explains “I learned to collaborate with others, think critically, and lead with confidence These experiences gave me the foundation to pursue my passions and overcome challenges whenever they arise, whether personally or professionally.”

Robert’s path after school was as unique as his journey to LGS

Abstaining from a traditional university route, he became the first pupil from LGS to undertake a degree

apprenticeship in Business Management He now works as a Senior Business Analyst for BSI, driving large-scale international projects, and is one of the youngest Chartered Managers in the UK In 2021, he founded The Honest Travel Company, a luxury travel agency specialising in tailor-made holidays

Reflecting on the role of donations, Robert said, “Your generosity didn’t just change my life; it continues to ripple through my career and the contributions I now strive to make to others. Your support is an investment in the future, and I am deeply grateful for it.”

Today, as a Governor of The Foundation, Robert is passionate about giving back and ensuring the next generation has access to the same transformative opportunities he received

“Your support has the power to change lives, just as it changed mine. By funding a bursary, you’re not only opening doors for a student – you’re fostering a legacy of opportunity, ambition, and achievement that benefits society as a whole.”

Amy’s Story

Growing up in Leicester as a child of Chinese immigrants, Amy’s parents always valued education but were unfamiliar with the British schooling system. Finding the right school for their daughter felt like a distant dream

“My parents always valued learning,” Amy (LHS 2016) recalls. “They’d thought about independent schools but knew they couldn’t afford the fees The idea of a school like LHS felt out of reach”

Amy’s primary school played a key role in shaping her educational path “My school was really good to me and had been giving me extra work to do,” she explains. “The Headteacher pointed out that the feeder secondary school wouldn’t offer the same level of challenge Then she suggested my parents look into LHS and mentioned that bursaries and scholarships were available if I did well on the entrance exam ”

A top-performing student, Amy not only passed the exam but emerged as the top scholar of her year, earning both an academic scholarship and a generous bursary “Without this bursary, attending an independent school would have been out of reach, and my educational journey would likely have taken a very different path,” she says

The bursary didn't just provide access to exceptional academics; it opened doors to a wealth of experiences that shaped Amy's future The financial supporting

relief allowed her family to focus on supporting her studies without the constant worry of tuition fees, enabling Amy to thrive throughout her seven years at LHS

Adjusting to life at LHS initially came with some nerves. Amy vividly remembers the entrance exam day, overhearing other pupils talk about horse riding and hockey, activities far removed from her own experience However, with the support of her teachers and the opportunities offered at LHS, those nerves quickly gave way to confidence

Reflecting on her time at school, Amy highlights the High School's crucial role in shaping her journey to becoming a doctor “LHS offered resources that were essential in my journey: mock medical interviews, career support, and personal recommendation letters from teachers who had guided me for seven years ”

One moment that stood out for Amy was when her form tutor overheard her discussing the challenges of finding medical work experience “He immediately stepped in and arranged a week of work experience for me at the local hospital through his neighbour This gesture showed how invested my teachers were in seeing me succeed.”

Beyond academics, the bursary gave Amy the chance to immerse herself in school life From performing with the School Band on a music trip to Prague to joining the Politics Society

and taking flute and piano lessons, these experiences were pivotal in shaping her life.

“One of my fondest memories was the Prague trip,” she shares “It was one of my foremost experiences in travel, friendship and independence.”

These opportunities enriched her education and helped fuel her lifelong interest in politics, which remains relevant today in her career in public health

Amy reflects on the life-changing impact of the bursary she received, saying: “If I were to speak to anyone considering supporting bursaries, I would say that it is an investment not only in a student's education but in their entire future.”

Her gratitude to those who made her education possible is immense “Their generosity allowed me to grow, learn, and pursue a career in public health and medicine, a career that suits me well and makes a difference in society”

As she reconnects with friends from her school days, Amy continues to cherish the memories and experiences that LHS gave her The bursary didn't just change the course of her education; it shaped the person she has become.

“Looking back, I know none of this would have been possible without the support I received, and for that, I will be forever thankful”

the music lives on Because of you...

The William Charles Recording Studio, a state-of-the-art facility within the Music department, is testament to how donations can inspire creativity. This cutting-edge studio, equipped with a professional-grade mixing console, advanced acoustics, and worldclass recording equipment, has been transforming the musical experiences of pupils since its launch.

The Studio was made possible through the remarkable generosity of Dorothy Huston, who funded the project in memory of her late father, William Frederick Charles (LGS 1876) William attended LGS, becoming a Governor in later life and founding the renowned Zenobia perfume shop He had a passion for innovation

Today, that passion lives on through the recording studio that bears his name, empowering pupils to push creative boundaries and unlock their full musical potential

Since its opening, the William Charles Recording Studio has become a vibrant hub of musical collaboration and education It has enabled the Music department to expand its capacity to teach A Level Music Technology, a course that attracts students excited about contemporary music and modern production techniques

generosity transcends time Because of you...

Legacy gifts can have a profound and lasting impact on the future of our Schools and pupils long after a person’s lifetime. By remembering Loughborough Schools Foundation in their Wills, alumni and friends are helping create life-changing opportunities for future generations.

These generous contributions support everything from scholarships and bursaries to vital capital projects, ensuring that talented young people can access an exceptional education in purpose built facilities

We are sincerely grateful for these gifts and the transformative power they have

The Arthur Shepherd Legacy

Arthur Shepherd (LGS 1914), a successful businessman and visionary, left a lasting impact through a gift in his Will His legacy, carefully invested by The Foundation, has supported scholarships and bursaries while funding key capital developments across the campus Most recently, it has helped to completely renovate the LGS Sixth Form Centre, turning it into a vibrant, modern space that encourages independent study and collaboration

Relatives of Arthur Shepherd attending the opening of the LGS Sixth Form Centre

In 2024, we celebrated the opening of the newly refurbished Tower and Sixth Form Centre This transformation has significantly enhanced our facilities and student experience The grand opening brought together members of the Shepherd family to honour Arthur’s connection to LSF, which spans four generations As the state-of-the-art facility was unveiled, we were reminded of how Arthur’s vision continues to shape and benefit future generations of pupils

The ‘Legamus’ Project

As a tribute to Beryl’s love of Classics, the gift will support the development of the ‘Legamus’ project Currently, the LHS Library holds a small collection of Latin novellas, which are used by Key Stage 3 pupils to further their academic growth in Latin The project encourages pupils to read, reflect, and write reviews on these novellas, honing their linguistic and critical thinking skills. Thanks to this gift, the number of books available will increase the amount of Latin texts and introduce a selection of books on Classical themes in English to engage pupils studying Classical Civilisation.

To further enrich the pupil experience, the School will dedicate a special space in the Library to house these resources, which will be known as The Stringfellow Collection This initiative will fuel a sense of discovery and encourage pupils to connect with classical literature beyond the classroom.

The Stringfellow Classics Bursary

As well as the Library, the gift in Beryl’s memory will also create the Stringfellow Classics Bursary This bursary will allow pupils to explore the wonders of the Classical world firsthand by supporting visits to museum exhibitions, theatre performances, or classical sites within the UK Such experiences will deepen students’ appreciation for the ancient world and bring their classroom learning to life

Beryl’s Enduring Impact

Beryl’s career at LHS was marked by her ability to connect with students and cultivate their academic potential “I really enjoy the rapport you get with a class,” she once reflected. “I get a great deal of satisfaction from interesting others and seeing them achieve”

Her dedication to learning and her deep love for Latin and Greek remain at the heart of these new initiatives, which will inspire pupils to explore, achieve, and share their love of Classics for many years to come.

Remembering Ed

When Ed Thorpe (LGS Staff 1964-1996) passed away in May 2023, his passion for rugby and cricket left a lasting impression on those who knew him Determined to honour his memory, alumni and friends generously donated to establish the Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund. This Fund ensures Ed’s legacy continues to inspire and support young sportsmen at LGS

In consultation with Ed’s family, friends, and LSF Sport, a grant scheme was created to help LGS families The Ed Thorpe Memorial Grants provide financial assistance to pupils pursuing excellence in rugby and cricket Grants can be used for specialist equipment, kit, transport to fixtures, training, external coaching, and tour costs

The Fund has made a meaningful impact and here are just a couple of examples of how Ed’s legacy is shaping the lives of young athletes

Ed and a rugby team of alumni in 1985

Ted and Toby, talented cricketers at LGS, have benefitted from the Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund.

Ted, a Year 10 pupil, plays for LGS under-15s, under-17s, and the First team, as well as representing Derbyshire CCC under-15s. With the intensity of his playing schedule, kit wears out quickly Thanks to an Ed Thorpe Memorial Grant, his family was able to secure the equipment he needed.

His father shared: “This grant has made a big difference Thank you for helping Ted pursue his passion and grow as a player.”

Toby, a member of the LGS First XI and Quorn’s men ’ s First team, also found essential support through the Fund. With his only cricket bat damaged, he applied for a grant to replace it with a more durable, highquality option

His family shared their appreciation: “We were ecstatic to receive the grant. It’s allowed Toby to perform confidently at school and in club cricket. Thank you so much to the donors of the Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund.”

Thanks to the generosity of Ed’s friends and former pupils, the Fund continues to make a real difference, enabling pupils to thrive in the sports Ed loved so dearly. The Ed Thorpe Memorial Fund will continue to support budding cricketers and rugby players at LGS, ensuring Ed’s passion for sport inspires generations to come

Thank you for helping us honour Ed’s memory and empower our pupils on and off the pitches.
