Welcome to Loughborough Grammar School

Statement of Aims

Our mission is to prepare young men for a fulfilling life through fostering achievement, aspiration and empathy.

We know boys and how to motivate them. We believe that high expectations are central to their success, helping to foster academic rigour and a love of learning for its own sake. We understand that a sense of achievement is also created through our hugely varied programme of extra-curricular activities which enable boys to feel fulfilled and to develop their character, resilience and teamwork. The following five values underpin a Loughborough Grammar School education.

Curriculum

Year 6

All pupils follow a broad curriculum which includes English, Mathematics, Art, Computer Science, Drama, French, Games, Geography, History, RE, Music, PE, PSHE, Science and Spanish.

Year 7 and 8

All pupils follow a broad curriculum which includes English, Mathematics, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, French, German and Spanish, Games, Geography, History, Latin, Music, PE, PSHE, Physics and Religion and Philosophy.

In Year 8, pupils also study Design and Technology and Drama. They continue with two languages chosen from French, German and Spanish.

Year 9

Pupils will continue with most of the subjects studied during Year 7 and 8, namely English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Games, Geography, History, PE, Physics, PSHE and Religion and Philosophy. They continue with the two languages chosen in Year 8.

Pupils also choose two additional subjects from Art, Classical Civilisation, Design and Technology, Drama, Classical Greek, Latin and Music.

Year 10 and 11

Pupils start the formal two-year GCSE or IGCSE courses. All boys take English Language, English Literature and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, and a further six subjects from the following list:

Additional Information for International Pupils

English as a Second Language (EAL)

All pupils starting at the School from overseas have an initial assessment carried out by a qualified EAL specialist and are given a level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

They work intensively on speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar and are further encouraged to participate actively in all curriculum areas by asking and answering questions in class and by engaging in whole class, small group and paired discussions.

Years 7 to 11

Pupils identified as in need of English support are taught in small groups throughout the week.

In Years 7 to 11, pupils work towards the Cambridge English Exams at the following levels as appropriate:

Key English Test (KET – A1/A2)

Preliminary English Test (PET – B1)

First Certificate in English (FCE – B2)

Certificate of Advanced English (CAE – C1).

Years 12 to 13

Students starting in Year 12 have an initial assessment and are given a level on the CEFR which is equated to an IELTS score in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

In Years 12 and 13, these students are taught in small groups throughout the week and the lessons have four clear goals:

1. To improve students’ speaking and discussion skills – particularly vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, intonation and stress.

2. To enable students to use the English learned to participate fully in their chosen A Level lessons.

3. To help students to perform to the best of their ability in university interviews.

4. To prepare students for IELTS tests in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Curriculum Options for International Pupils Year 8

In Year 8 and 9 pupils only select one Modern Foreign Language.

Year 10

If it is felt that a pupil’s English is not strong enough to follow the GCSE English Language course, then they will be entered for the Cambridge English Examination course. This course is equivalent to GCSE and has been chosen to support pupils’ university ambitions.

The Admissions Process for Day Pupils

Admission to Loughborough Grammar School is by selection on academic merit. Parents who are considering Loughborough Grammar School for their son are encouraged to visit the School and meet the Head, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Our Admissions team work parents’ hours, not school hours. We suggest that a tour of the School is requested on a working day. We believe that this enables boys to gain a sense of the character and atmosphere of the School as well as view the facilities, talk to staff, current pupils and Sixth Form students. Boys will then be better placed to decide whether Loughborough Grammar School is a school where they feel they will be happy and thrive. Tours outside the normal working week and holidays can be arranged.

The entrance examinations for entry to Years 6 and 7 in September 2024, will be held on Saturday 13 January 2024 , however we hold regular assessment mornings throughout the year, including holidays. Please contact the Registrar for the next available date. The entrance examinations for entry to Years 8 and 10 in September 2024 usually take place at a mutually convenient time during the Spring term. Year 6 to 10 Entry

Candidates are assessed by examinations in Mathematics, English and non-verbal reasoning. We also request a completed LGS reference form and a report from the candidate’s current school.

We invite parents of candidates with additional needs or disabilities which may need to be considered for their entrance examinations, to discuss these needs with the School as early as possible so that appropriate adjustments can be considered. For example, a recent expert’s report, an educational psychologist’s report confirming dyslexia or a medical report confirming a disability, would need to be submitted to the School for consideration prior to the examinations.

Please advise Admissions if your son has, or is being assessed for, any medical condition or physical incapacity of which we should be aware.

Entrance Examinations

The entrance examination consists of written papers in English and Mathematics.

English

The ability to understand written passages is tested by means of comprehension questions. These will require, for example, the explanation of the writer’s meaning, the drawing of reasonable inferences and understanding and explaining the meanings of words.

The ability to write well is tested by means of a composition. Qualities looked for are the ability to convey meaning clearly, to write in an interesting manner, and to show evidence of liveliness, originality, imagination and thoughtfulness. The use of a wide vocabulary, variety of sentence structure and a reasonable standard of spelling and punctuation will be expected.

GRAMMAR

Mathematics

The questions are intended to test the candidates’ powers of reasoning and their ability to apply mathematical concepts. Year 6, Year 7, and Year 8 candidates cannot use a calculator but they are permitted for the Year 9 and Year 10 examinations. The examinations are all based on topics in the National Curriculum.

Year 12 Entry

We welcome enquiries from candidates interested in joining Loughborough Grammar School in Year 12.

Candidates currently in Year 11 are invited to attend a Taster Morning in the Autumn term to meet students and staff as well as to sample Year 12 lessons. Tours of the School on a working day are available on request. Candidates who wish to apply for entry in September 2024 should submit a completed Registration form, which can be found on our website. All candidates are interviewed by the Head or Deputy Head. References, a report and a copy of predicted grades will also be requested from the candidate’s current school.

Conditional offers are made based upon GCSE grades or international equivalents. Our minimum entry requirements are as follows:

A Level entry is 30 points across the best 5 GCSEs and a minimum of grade 5 in English

Language and Mathematics GCSE

Grade 7 in the subjects being continued at A Level is recommended. In Mathematics, grade 8 is expected

The Admissions Process for International Pupils

Entry examination procedures for international pupils are as follows;

Years 6 to 10

Entrance examination papers in English and Mathematics.

An interview with our EAL specialist, via Skype or Teams, is also conducted for all international candidates.

Year 12

Predicted GCSE grades (or equivalent) or by examination in Mathematics and English. If it is not possible for a student to visit the School, examinations may be taken either at the student’s current school, through the British Council or through the parents’ appointed Agent.

Applicants from Hong Kong may also take examinations through the Hong Kong Overseas Examination Authority.

English as a Second Language

All boys starting at the School from overseas have an initial assessment carried out by our qualified EAL specialist, Mrs A Slater, and are given a level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in speaking, listening, reading and writing. We use PASSWORD for the online assessment of English.

Child Student Visa

We are delighted to be able to welcome international students to the School. Not only are they able to benefit from a UK education but they enrich school life and enhance the experience of domestic pupils. All international pupils must have a Child Student visa to allow them to study in School. Similarly, the School must have a Licence issued by the UK Home Office that allows it to recruit overseas pupils. With the School Licence comes a number of continuous and on-going responsibilities that we must comply with at all times. Any school that does not do this will prejudice the licence and may have it withdrawn by the Home Office. Where this occurs, all international pupils have to leave the School and make a new visa application. The impact, therefore, on pupils and the School can be very serious.

In order to ensure that pupils and parents comply with the UK Government’s requirements on visa entry, the School has instructed Newland Chase Education, a UK immigration law firm that specialises in student visas and school licences, to complete and submit all visa applications, whether these are overseas applications, or renewal visas in the UK. This will not delay the process and we would appreciate your co-operation in this matter. You can rest assured that the visa applications are in the hands of experts.

If a pupil turns 18 years old, they may carry on with their course until their permission to stay ends. If they want to do further study in the UK, they will have to apply under another category.

Pupils joining from another school in the UK must have a visa application sponsored by this school in place, before they arrive at Loughborough Grammar School. If your child is transferring from another school, Newland Chase Education will assist with this process.

Upon arrival at the School, a Biometric Residence Permit will be issued. This is a plastic bankcardsized card which contains a computer chip with details of the Leave to Remain.

The Biometric Residence Permit will be for the duration of the Course (i.e. GCSE or A Level), therefore a new one needs to be applied for when the course is completed and before moving to a new one (i.e. moving from GCSE to A Level, or from A Level to Degree).

These are for Years 6, 7 and 9 entry. The entrance exams for Year 8 and Year 10 are typically taken in the Spring term.

We welcome applications and will assess boys at all times of the year. Applications can be taken for immediate entry if a space is available.

Taster Days

Prospective pupils are always welcome to spend the day at the School.

Fees

Fees are reviewed annually for the following year.

Registration Fee

The registration fee for Day pupils of £100 should be sent with the Registration form. For overseas/ Boarding applicants the registration fee of £130 should be sent with the Registration form. Please make payment via bank transfer, and refer to the Registration form for the bank transfer details. Payment may also be made via debit or credit card or cheque, payable to ‘Loughborough Schools Foundation’. The registration fee is non-refundable.

Acceptance Deposit

An acceptance deposit of £400 is payable on acceptance of a place and is returned when pupils leave in accordance with the Foundation’s Terms and Conditions.

*The sum of £2,500 will be deducted from the first term’s fees.

Please note that fees are due on the first day of each term. Payment may be made by bank transfer, direct debit, debit card, credit card or the School operates a monthly payment plan. For overseas students, payment may be made by bank transfer or by credit card. For credit card payments, standard charges will apply.

Scholarships and School Assisted

Places (SAPS)

Academic Awards/ Scholarships

The Foundation offers a number of honorary awards for entry to Year 7 which are awarded on academic merit. All candidates are considered for these awards without the need for any further application. These have no financial value but confer considerable prestige. Scholarships are not awarded at Sixth Form.

It should be stressed that selection for awards is not affected in any way by whether or not the candidate is also applying for a full fee paying place. Academic merit is the sole criterion for scholarship awards.

Music Awards

Music Scholarships are available at Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12. We welcome applications from both internal and external candidates; an offer of a Scholarship is conditional on gaining entry to one of the Schools in the Loughborough Schools Foundation.

Music Scholarships are available by audition in January to exceptional practical musicians, whether instrumentalists or vocalists. They provide the framework for a comprehensive partnership between the pupil and the Music department. Music Scholarships will be tenable for the duration of a pupil’s time at the Loughborough Schools Foundation, subject to annual review, and comprise individually tailored support with performance practice, music theory and aural skills, unrivalled ensemble experience and full access to the Enhanced Music Programme. Scholars must be enthusiastic and able musicians, who can demonstrate their passion for the subject as well as their technical skill. They will be mentored throughout their time at School to ensure they become the best musicians that they can be.

School Assisted Places (SAPS)

SAPS may be awarded to pupils whose parents are unable to pay the full school fees and all applicants for financial support are thus means tested as part of the application process. These awards are designed to assist those pupils who have demonstrated the potential to benefit from the education and opportunities provided by Loughborough Grammar School and who would actively contribute to the ethos and community spirit within the School. The awards are subject to review and will continue through the pupil’s time at School for as long as it can be demonstrated that they are benefiting from the educational provision, and there remains a need for financial assistance. SAPS are awarded by the Head, who will consider a number of factors before making a decision and it is important to note that the academic merit of pupils as well as the financial situation of the parents will be taken into account when considering the award. Sadly, it is not possible to offer support to all those parents whose financial circumstances warrant it and making an application does not guarantee that financial assistance will form part of the offer. In order to be considered for a SAP, it is necessary to complete and submit a Statement of Financial Circumstance Form with relevant supporting documentation, by no later than 31 October 2023 Please note that we are unable to consider late applicants for means tested financial support and the award verification process may include a home visit. Parents/Legal Guardians will be notified by the end of January whether or not a financial award is being made and the exact amount.
