One evening while at the Promenade MRT Station in Singapore, I was standing right in front of the ticket machine. Yes, this was my first time travelling in Singapore. Among the chaos and confusion, purchasing a ticket from this square machine became such a difficult thing to do.

Fortunately, every cloud has its silver lining and a good-looking woman appeared to give me a hand. With her charming Singlish accent, my MRT angel showed me how to buy a ticket (How lucky I was!). Coincidently, we both were heading to the same station, Bras Basah. Before I could even get a word in, she quickly bent her head and kept scrolling at her smartphone happily. For what seemed like a split second, we reached our final destination. I didn’t even catch her name.

The only thing I remembered was the ticket cost of 2SGD. She left with a smile along with her smartphone. Me, I continued my journey alone to Singapore Art Museum.

The rhythmic sound of the train on its track slowly mesmerizes us for miles while we look out through the train window as the train hypnotically cruises past vast rice fields and the emerald forests.

D u r i n g t h e t r ai n r i de , o u r bodies sway to its spellbinding tempo bouncing back and forth to the rhythm of the law of gravity. Hawkers and venders line up along the way tempting us with the smell of local food floating through the air. This ultimate charm remains unchanged.

If we turn back the hands of time to 1887, for the Siamese (now known as Thai people), the means of transportation was limited to boats and carts. By the royal command of King Rama V of the Chakri Dynasty, railway routes were surveyed for comfort traveling for the people of Siam. The first state railway line was established by the Thai Government in 1887. From Bangkok to Korat, the distance was 265 km. It was the turning point for Thais to travel farther than before. If we were born in such a time, we would absolutely be awed by the iron horse the moment we first saw the smoke from a steam locomotive spurting out smoke stack. It would totally fascinate us.

With the success of the first railway line accomplished, other lines later branched out throughout the country. Thai people became dependent of the “Train” as their main form of transportation.

From steam locomotives to diesel locomotives, the general public can choose from various types of trains that were designed for particular purposes such as express train, sleeping coach, sprinter train, first class, second class and third class.

Above all, Thai railways always check to make sure that the train will bring you safely to your destination.

緑の野原と森林の山々が入れ替 わり立ち代る風景を眺めている 間、鉄道の機械音が道中ずっと混 ざり合っている。 重圧に任せて体が揺れる。食欲をそそる食

べ物の匂いが通路を漂ってくる。食べ物を売り 歩く人とのおしゃべりにいつでも花が咲く。列車

の上で過ごす魅力的な時間は未だに失われるこ とはない。

時計の針を戻してタイ暦２４３０年に遡って

みると、シャム王国の国民たちは牛車や運河を 利用してあちこち旅行していることだろう。ラッ タナゴーシン王朝のラーマ５世の時代、シャム王

国の国民たちが快適に旅行できるようにと考え て、チュラロンコーン大王は鉄 道の線路を建設 するための土地調査を行う勅命を出した。タイ

暦２４３９年、タイ政府によるタイで最初の線路 がバンコク－ナコンラーチャシーマー間に建設

された。距離にして２６５キロメートルになる。

このことはタイの交通と長距離旅行にとって重 要な転換期となった。もし私たちがその時代の 人だったら、蒸気機関車の頭部を付けて白煙を 噴出している鉄の馬の姿を目にしてどれほど驚 いていることだろう。

最初の線路の建設が終わってから、路線は

タイの全ての地域へと拡張された。人々は旅行 したり訪問したりする時、主に“鉄道”のサービス

に依存するようになった。蒸気機関車からディ ーゼル機関車の時代へと変わり、現在では特急

列車や急行列車、快速列車、普通列車、さらに、

座席車両、寝台車両、普通車両、そして冷房車両 など多種多様のサービスを選べるようになった。

しかし、どの車両や種 類を選んでも、タイの列 車は必ず乗客を安全に目的地までお連れするこ とができる。北路線では、列車は終着駅のチェ

ンマイまで到着するために、高山の中を突き進 み、さらに４箇所のトンネルを通過しなければな らない。当時では建設が最も困難な路線であっ

た。けれども、この路線の魅力は今日に至っても

色褪せることはない。その中でもKaeng Luang と Saphan Tha Chomphuでの朝の風景は特

に素晴らしい。イサーン(東北)路線はウボンラー

チャタニーとノンカーイまで建設された。これ

によって北イサーンと南イサーンの人々の生活が 結ばれるようになった。鉄 道の車両はとてつも なく広い高原の田野を昔ながらに日々走り過ぎ ていく。

Moreover there are very good inter-provinces connecting railway system: Northern Line: the Northern rail line to Chiang Mai runs through 4 tunnels and hills. It was said that the construction of this Northern line was truly an uphill battle but worthwhile as you can admire the sunrise in the morning, especially at Kang Luang or Ta Chompoo Bridge.

Easthern Line: the railway where North Eastern main line in Nong Khai and South Eastern main line in Ubon Ratchathani linked the people from the two regions together.

Under a vast plateau, the train rides through rice fields and open fields day by day without fail.

Southern Line: the train runs through the tranquil plantation of v e r dant r u b be r tr e e s. A l thou g h the scenery rolling by the train window may differ from day to day, the charms of travelling by train still remains. The bond between Thai people and train society is inseparable.

なることだろう。もしかしたら、旅行の間に出会 ったものによって、終着地での目的はあまり大切 ではなくなるかもしれない。自然の美しさは目か

The Island of Eternal Impression 3 h o u r s o f f l i g h t t i m e f r o m Chiang Mai to Singapore flew by quickly as we settled comfortably in our SilkAir Business Class full leather seats, whilst enjoying a signature Singapore fare “Nasi Lemak” - fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk. As we bid farewell to the friendly SilkAir crew, we got a chance to witness why Changi Airport was truly an ideal stopover destination!

One could catch a free show at the movie theatre, be amazed by the 5 themed gardens, enjoy free wifi, relax at the designated resting areas or simply shop till you drop at any of the 350 retail outlets!

As we exited the airport, our next stop was to Resorts World Sentosa, an integrated resort, which offers a

world-class theme park, Universal Studios Singapore™ (USS), hotels, spas, meeting and incentive venues.

Let us imagine being a hero, where we rescue the world together with Optimus Prime and battle against the forces of evil, right here on the 3D Transformers thrill ride at USS! Then, we visited the Far Far Away castle and took a photograph with Shrek and his Princess Fiona and danced along with the 4 mischievous penguins of Madagascar!

The fun continued as we explored the world’s biggest aquarium right h e r e i n S i n g a p o r e a t t h e South East Asia (S.E.A) Aquarium, and was amazed by the 100,000 underwater creatures of over 800 species. We were even allowed to touch and feel a sea star!

Then, we came face to face with the fishes and sharks at the world’s biggest glass tank of 8.3m tall and 36.0m wide.

As we waved goodbye to Resorts World Sentosa, we headed excitedly to Flight Experience™ where we got to experience what it was like to be a SilkAir pilot. SilkAir, in February 2014, began its conversion from an all Airbus to all Boeing 737 fleet. Seated inside a real Boeing 737-800NG simulator, we put on a Captain’s hat, and tested our flying skills as we flew over the Himalayas and tried to land the aircraft at Paris!

Alas, the day ended and we had to say goodbye to Singapore as we continue our journey with SilkAir to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the world’s biggest archipelago. To be continued…

Rimping Supermarkets make people “feel at home” and that eventually made them feel loyal to the exclusive products, as well as to particular stores.

Why do you think people trust the Rimping brand?

“I like to think it is because our philosophy has always been to place customer care before commercialism, and similarly people before profits. That outlook came quite naturally because from our humble beginnings, we very much enjoyed listening to what customers wanted and we tried hard to provide it. If that meant giving shelf space to some ‘exotic’ imported products which gave little financial returns, we were still rewarded by seeing the pleasure and satisfaction it created. Over time, we experienced a different kind of “return” as many became loyal customers doing their entire household shopping at Rimping.”

Helping Hands is another initiative run by Rimping which supports orphans at a local boys’ home.

How did you get involved with this particular venture?

“I have always been grateful that I was born into a caring family and received a good education. I have also been intensely aware of the many orphaned or disadvantaged children who, with no education, are often condemned to a lifetime of low-paid employment.

When I first visited the Chiang Mai Home for Boys, I was impressed to see that they were trying to address this problem and genuinely wanted to help.

We decided to do this on a sustained basis by funding a total ‘education package’ for a selected group of diligent hardworking boys through school, to graduation from university or technical college, and into secure employment.”

“Our fifth supermarket branch, which offers a very compact but comprehensive range of our main supermarket items, was opened in Maya Mall in Huay Kaew Road, just up from the Rincome intersection, in January 2014.

How about your Guest House business in Chiang Mai? Hiroki: Most of our guests are mainly Japanese with others as Koreans and Westerners. We have continuous guests coming in throughout the year. Most of them knew us from the website and word of mouth. We have very reasonable prices for every guest. We found that travelling and studying Thai Massage are the main purposes of our guests for visiting Chiang Mai. In the future, I have plans to expand the business to Cambodia because of meeting many new friends. The guest house is like a foundation business which helps me extend to other businesses, which have already been included in my plan, such as international trade, real estate, and yoga and fitness center.

Behavior: A large beautiful bird that is bigger than a little sparrow of 17 c.m. in total length. The males have glossy velvet violet feathers on the head and upper parts of the body. The blackish tail has a white tip, and barred outer feathers.

The most spectacular feature is the brightly iridescent violet chin and upper breast. The belly is white with broad black, green or violet bars. Mature males also have a red eye-ring. The females have mottled, greenish-bronze upper parts and a dark brown crown. There are white markings around the eyes and sometimes on the forehead. The central tail feathers are greenish while the outer feathers are reddish-brown with greenish bars.

The Violet Cuckoo is found in Bangladesh, the Andaman, Indian subcontinent and South East Asia.

Normally this is a rare resident bird that inhabits the evergreen forests and deciduous forests of 600 m above sea level or less in Thailand.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. It is also seen in gardens, orchards, and rubber plantations. Violet Cuckoos favors insect, but also eat assorted fruit.

They have been seen shaking hairy caterpillars to remove the stomach contents for consumption. They forage by creeping up and down branches, but they can also fly catch on their wings. Cuckoos are brood parasites and lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. The males are active and vocal during the breeding season in order to attract mates. Once they have mated, the females become secretive as they search for appropriate nests in which to lay their eggs. Violet Cuckoos are sunbirds and spider hunters.

沢のある暗赤褐色で、わずかに緑色を帯びてい ます。顔から体の下面は白色で、黒い横縞があり

ます。嘴は明るいオレンジ色、アイリングは赤色

です。インド亜大陸北東部、インド洋のアンダマ ン諸島、中国南西部、東南アジアに分布してい ます。タイでは通常は海抜600m以下の落葉樹 林や常緑樹林に生息する稀な留鳥です。
