EDITOR’S TALK Make Love, Not War

On the 1st of September 1939, Germany officially went under the iron fist leadership of one of the most power craze dictator of all time, Adolf Hitler, who ambitiously declared that he will lead Germany to rule the World. That insatiable crave for power later became the downfall of World War II. Every continent echoed the sounds of gunshots and bombs exploding. Ultimately, it became the most bloody and widespread war in history. On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon, I and my team got a glimpse of the historical past of World War II by driving through the crooked path into the Northern part of Thailand to the peaceful town of Khun Yuam district of Mae Hong Sorn Province. This was the same route that the Japanese Army used to retreat after surrendering to the War. At that time, as much as over one hundred thousand Japanese soldiers wandered into Khun Yuam with fatal injuries that eventually cost many of them their lives. Though previously played the role of men behind the enemy line, the villagers did their best to tend to the soldier’s wounds as an act of humanitarian. The special bond shared between the people of two nations is represented by stories and pictures throughout this special issue. At the Thai – Japanese Monument in the center of Khun Yuam town, assorted bullets and bombs are displayed in an orderly fashion on the shelves along with many well preserved soldiers’ uniforms neatly hung in their glass showcase. One might stand in discomfort among such hostile environment if it weren’t for one major detail: the tips of the guns were beautifully decorated with colorful flowers to spread the message of love. *Corrections: In the article “Residence Guide; The Golden Wells” of Issue 86 in September, the words “The Three Kingdom Monument” should have been printed as “The Three King Monument”. WAR And FRIENDSHIP 戦争と友情

Fascinating black and white photographs document the period when the Japanese soldiers lived in Khunyuam district.

On that faithful morning of December 8th, 1941 The Japanese marine troop landed on Siam’s coast with the intention of using it as their victory passage to conquer the two colonies of Great Britain, Myanmar and Melayu, after their declaration of War. This tiny chapter in history, seemingly minute yet filled with so much significance, played its role in the Greater East Asia War story. At that time, the most notorious railway of destruction in Kanchanaburi was revealed to the world along with its deadly casualties of war prisoners from the West. While all eyes were on this treacherous construction, other railway routes were also built in Thailand such as the Pai-Khunyuam route in Mae Hong Son province. It was built by hired local labors and multi-nationality war prisoners who created a pioneer road from Mae Hong Son to Myanmar. Khunyuam had originally been used as a Japanese military base but in 1945 when Japan lost the war, the road from Mae Hong Son to Myanmar became the designated path for withdrawing troops out of Siam. Though the 4 years of War had caused so much destruction and human casualties, friendship with no known boundaries rose above all adversities. The cruelty of war could not cast its shadows upon the strong bonding that illuminated the kindness of mankind. The severity of the damage cause by this tragedy is a lesson in history that we cannot brush aside and perhaps we should learn not to repeat the mistakes of a handful of power hungry people.

西暦1941年12月8日朝、戦争宣言を行った後、日本国軍の兵士が、イギリス領となっていたミャンマー、マラユーと対峙するため、軍艦から兵力をタイへ上陸させた日だ。これもアジアブラパー戦争で起こった史実の1つである。ビルマへ向け、タイ国内に様々な鉄道路線を開設したが、メーホンソン県にあるパーイ－クンユアム間の鉄道路線もそのひとつ。工事は地元の人々を雇って行われたが、この鉄道建設が、メーホンソン県からビルマへ通じる最初の道となった。当時日本軍は、クンユアムをベースキャンプのひとつとしていた。19 4 5 年、日本軍の敗戦が明らかになると、開設された道は、皮肉にも日本軍が敗走する道となった。たった4 年間ではあったが、戦争という名の下、多くの犠牲を払うこととなった。しかし、この道で、人々の移動にまつわる様々なエピソード、人間同士の絆、国境を越えた友情が生まれた。これらの史実が、今私たちを再び歴史に向かわせ、歴史から学ばせようとしている。戦争は、人間同士の温かい交流が生んだ友情物語を消し去ることはできないと。

The community is located in the mountainous embrace sharing the borders of two-nations (Thailand-Myanmar). A unique culture flourished among the diversity of the two different nations for long time. This key route from Khunyuam to the Shan state of Myanmar leads directly to the sea in Mawlamyaing. It was well noted that Khunyuam became the most important CarryOn animals merchandise junction in the frontier of Thailand and Myanmar. Many goods from Myanmar were distributed to many areas in Northern Thailand as the community commercially prospered peacefully with its deep cultural roots and simple way of life. Soon after World War II was declared, countries in Asian continent including Siam, automatically joined the war. The Japanese troop began its military invasion in Siam by taking control over Bangkok and went up North as far as Khunyuam. The once peaceful town was forced to face the change…when the first Japanese army’s jeep drove into town along with the first Japanese troop. Because of Khunyuam’s significant strategic location, it was used as the military base to send soldiers to the battlefield in Burma. At that time, the Japanese army decided to expand the road for military maneuvering purpose and hired many local people as labor. This road became an important strategic route for the Japanese to fight against the Allied forces (Burma and India). From the moving in of Japanese troop to the labor hiring in Khunyuam, it brought more trades and negotiations between soldiers and villagers. Amidst the entire chaotic war situation, emerged a friendship that grew in time even after the war ended.

豊かな自然が残る山麓にある町で、二国間(タイーミャンマー)を繋ぐ国境付近にある。様々な民族が集まって生活するこの町には、太古から自然と独特の文化･慣習が育まれてきた。クンユアムを走る道は、シャン州やモウラミャインの町にある海岸へと続く重要な道で、かつてクンユアムは、タイーミャンマー両国を隊商(ウアターンマーターン)が行き交う、国境の主要な貿易都市であったことは余りにも有名だ。ミャンマーからの商品はここに集められ、北部タイの各都市へ流されていった。ここに住む各民族の文化や素朴で静かな生活習慣にも、かつて栄えた商業都市の面影が見え隠れする. しかし、第2次世界大戦が始まると、タイも例外とはならず、世界中が戦争に巻き込まれることとなった。日本軍は、タイにも司令部を置き、バンコクへ進軍すると、北上して、クンユアムにもベースキャンプを配置した。素朴な生活が営まれていたこの地も、日本軍の最初の車両が、町に入ってきたときから、変化を迎えることになる。戦略の変更により、クンユアムは、ミャンマー各地へ物資を供給する日本軍の輸送拠点となり、道路拡大の必要性が生まれた。多くのクンユアム住民が道路建設労働者として借り出され、連合国側のミャンマー及びインド軍と戦う先方隊へ物資を供給するために利用する道路建設が、クンユアムの人々が昔からミャンマーとの貿易に利用してきた道を拡大させる形で行われた。日本軍が地元の人々を労働者として雇用する中で、住民と兵士との間に物の売り買いや交渉を通して、また、共に生活する機会が生まれ、これが戦時中に育まれた住民と軍人たちの友情物語の始まりとなった。

War And Friendship Though the first appearance of the Japanese troop frightened and alarmed all villagers in Khunyuam, the soldiers’ friendliness and consideration melted away any feelings of doubt from all the villagers’ mind. Unlike other war zones, the villagers did not need any bunkers after all because no threats could be felt. Uncle Joliya Upara, one of Khunyuam’s villagers who had a personal experience from the war at that time told us that “At first when I heard from the government that we had to build bunkers because the Japanese troop was moving into our village and everybody was so scared. But when they finally showed up in our village, it was different from what we had expected. They did not hurt us but they came with wartime necessities and shared them with us such as medicines and clothes. Moreover, they helped us during harvesting as well as other agricultural activities. At that point, commercial trading between the troop and the villagers began. At that time, I was working for one Japanese soldier as a water carrier. I also made Moji from our sticky rice and sold them to the Japanese soldiers and they really liked it. We used Burmese to communicate because we knew the language already and the Japanese also knew it from the time that they spent fighting in Burma. I thought business was great because we helped each other out. I never heard anything about any conflicts. The road construction was completed without any violent incidents. On the day that they had to retreat because Japan lost the war, it was one of the scariest times ever. Many of them were infected with Malaria, fatally injured from the bombs and many were missing limbs. We tried hard to save them. We did whatever we could do at that time until the final day that Japan announced it had surrendered and called all their troops back. I remembered that I was very sad like many of the villagers. We all cried because we wanted them to stay with us. Many soldier tried to escape from going back, like Sergeant Fukuda who fell in love with Grandma Keaw. Their love began from simple trading and finally ended with marriage. But sadly, Sergeant Fukuda was eventually sent back home after the war ended. Their love story lives on in the memories of the people in Khunyuam till today.” The story of Grandma Keaw and Uncle Joliya is a reminder that love and friendship can blossom among the worst war scenario no matter what nationality, race and culture they are. Love and friendship will prevail in the end.

戦争と友情日本軍の進駐は、静に暮らしていたクンユアムの住民に驚きや多少の恐怖感を与えたり、また、他の駐屯地では街の中に穴を掘って、防空壕が建設されたりはしたが、クンユアム郡には不必要であった。進駐してきた日本軍が、とても親切で彼らが互いにあるものを分かち合うことができたからだ。初老のジョリア･ウパラは、クンユアム住民のひとりで、日本軍と生活を共にした経験を持ち、当時をこのように語っている。“政府から最初に(日本軍の進駐を)聞いたときには、防空壕の建設が必要で、軍の駐屯がとても怖かったよ。でも、進駐してきた日本軍は、決して私たちに手を出さなかった。それどころが、当時、村人たちが不足している必要生活物資、例えば、薬品や服などを分け与えてくれた。また、稲刈りなどの農作業も手伝ってくれ、そのうち兵隊さんとの間で物の売り買いが始まった。当時僕はまだ幼くて、日本軍の将校に水を運ぶ仕事をしていた。また、もち米をこねて生地を作って餡を包み、もち(大福)の様なお菓子を作って売っていたけど、そりゃー良く売れたよ。日本の兵隊さんがいつも買ってくれた。兵隊さんとのやり取りは、ビルマ語だった。村人はビルマ語が分かったし、ビルマから帰ってきた兵隊さんは、ある程度のビルマ語が分かったから。当時は我々にとってとても景気がよかったよ。お互い助け合っていたからね。問題が起こったことを聞いたことは一度もなかった。道路建設の工事も我々も喜んで協力したし、虐げられるようなことはなかった。戦争に敗れて日本軍が、引き上げてきたときは、とても怖かったことを覚えている。マラリヤにかかる兵士や爆撃で負傷した兵士もいてそりゃー驚いた。足や手を失った兵士もいたけど、結局村人全員で彼らを助けたよ。敗戦が宣言されて、彼らが国へ帰還するように命令を受ける日まで。その日は人生でも一番といえるくらい寂しかったね。涙を流して帰りたくないと訴える兵士もいた。中には、身を隠して帰らなかった兵士もいる。ゲオおばさんと福田軍曹は、物の売り買いを重ねるうちに親しくなり、結婚した。その後も２人は、後に福田軍曹が帰還するまで一緒に生活した。でも、２人の恋物語は、今もクンユアム住民の心に深く刻まれ、語り継がれているよ。” ゲオおばさんとジョリヤおじさんの話は、戦時中にでも、民族や人種、文化が異なろうとも、人々が愛し合い、友情を深めることができるということを私たちに語りかけている。

In Remembrance Of Our Friends Peace and war often go hand in hand but what humanity can’t really live without is peace. World War II left much devastation accompanied by tragic loss of loved ones that no one wanted to happen. Many places in Khunyuam became a graveyard for more than 7,000 Japanese soldiers never made it back home. It was a war path for the “Fallen Japanese Soldiers”. After the war, this small town returned to its peaceful state again. Today, the stories of the friendship between the two nations continue to be passed on from one generation to another. Past and present is represented by a historic Thai-Japanese monument keeping the memories alive reminding us how wonderful life can be when we live in peace and harmony.

記憶に残る友へ戦争と平和は共存しない。そして、平和は世界の人類が望む共通の理念だ。先の第二次大戦では、私たちが望むものとは最も遠いところにある多くの深い傷跡、喪失と別れを残した。クンユアム郡内の至る所に、７千人に上る日本兵士たちが眠っている。住民たちとの協同で建設された道が、皮肉にも日本兵士の遺骨が眠る道と化した悲劇。戦後は、この小さな町に、かつての静かで素朴な生活が戻ってきた。住民と兵士が育んだ友情物語は、深く歴史に刻まれ、今も世代を超えて伝えられており、クンユアムタイ・日本友好記念ホール博物館が建設されている。ここには、今も住民の胸に残る思い出とエピソード、遺品の数々が収められており、互いの愛が世界を繋ぐことができるのだと教えてくれている。

What is the feedback response from the Japanese about living in Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai? Most Japanese who have been living here in Thailand for a long period of time are retirees. They chose Chiang Mai because of the similarity of mild climate to that of Japan but with one exception of difference in the area of transportation, which makes living difficult without sufficient rail train system.

今年のタイ、特にチェンマイでの長期滞在に対する日本人の評判はいかがですかタイで長期滞在する日本人の多くは、比較的高齢の退職者層で、彼らがチェンマイを選んだ主な理由が、日本の雰囲気に似ているということです。ただ、交通の便が悪く、移動が困難です。チェンマイには鉄道もありません。

What is the key issue that you would like to concentrate on concerning the needs of Japanese in this seminar? Now, I am worry about Thailand’s economy because Thailand has just gone through a coup d’état with a new prime minister recently appointed into office while Japan has never had a coup d’état in its history. Therefore, longstay tourists understandingly worry about their own safety and this may cause a decrease of the amount of longstay tourists in the future.

今回のチェンマイ訪問で、山田さんが伝えたい日本人の要望とはどういったものですか私が今、一番不安に思っているのがタイ経済です。タイはクーデターが起こって様々な変化があり、首相が誕生したばかりです。日本はクーデターの経験がありません。ですから、日本人はタイへ渡航することに、安心、安全面で不安を抱いており、観光客減少に影響を与える可能性も否定できません。

What message would you like to leave with the authorities? I would like to suggest to the entrepreneurs and longstay related residents to present additional information about Chiang Mai because the province has so much more to offer than just low cost of living and beautiful scenery. I would like to see new interesting prospects of Chiang Mai being presented, such as delicious local Northern food and stunning temples. Finally, I noticed that there are many books and magazines for tourists but mainly in English. Since most Japanese are not good in English, more books and magazines should be published in Japanese so more information could be shared in a wider range of circle.

山田さんから何かメッセージがあればお願いします私は、ロングステイ事業者及び関連諸機関に、新しいチェンマイを魅せてもらいたいと思っています。チェンマイの魅力は、街が美しく、生活費が安いことだけではないからです。事業者たちが、例えば、北部タイの郷土料理やお寺など、新たな視点でチェンマイの魅力を打ち出していくことが重要と考えます。最後に、もう１つ、私が目に付いたことですが、日本語の書籍、刊行物がまだ少なく、より充実させて欲しいと思います。日本人の多くは、英語でのコミュニケーションが余り得意ではないからです。

【場所】ワロロット市場付近から、行先を確認して黄色ソンテオに乗ればよい。チェンライに通じる幹線118号を北上すること30～40分（20km弱、料金18B）で寺の麓の市場に着く。道からは右手に有名な仏塔が見えるので他の手段でも迷うことはない。寺に通じる300段を超える長い竜の石段を登るのはドイ･ステープ寺の場合とよく似ているが、規模はステープ寺には及ばない。

【概要】市内から外れたこの寺を取上げる理由を書く。寺は2012/05/29に王室寺院に昇格した。ラーマ9世84歳を祝賀してタイ全土から20寺が王室寺院に昇格したが、その中に選ばれたのである。ピン川より東では初めての快挙である。2012/08/24に行われた祝賀行事を見学したが、寺や信者の喜びは大変なものであった。50報をこえる資料を調査したが情報が乏しいので、一部は項目を列挙するにとどめる。

【紹介】(1)公式には1112年の建立とされるが、伝承では釈迦が布教に来られたときまで遡る。寺の麓にある蓮池につがいの竜が住んでいた。霊光を見た竜は若者に変身し、蓮を持って釈迦の許に参じた。それを愛でた釈迦は髪の毛を竜に与えた。竜は小さな石の仏塔を作って安置した。メーサイのサソリ寺と同様の縁起である。元の寺名は髪毛を意味する「センケート」であったが、次第に転じて「サケット」になった。ウィスンカマシ（正式認定）が1918/02/07であることを考えると、その間に大変な紆余曲折があったことが偲ばれる。 (2)仏塔は古いものの上に新しいものを被せた形で、中に入ることができる。(3)ジャトラムック様式（四方に正面がある）の本堂の内部には他では見られない近代的な壁画が描かれている。(4)小さなウボソットは閉じられており入れない。(5)金の仏塔にある４つのスンのそれぞれに仏像が安置されている。(6)竜王の蓮池までは約1km、見るべきものはない。(7)本堂の入口にラフーの像がある。もともとは魔物に分類されるものであるが、次第に寺などの守護神に昇格した。

B r ow n F i s h O w l Ketupa zeylonensis ミナミシマフクロウ Behavior: Originated from a big owl family, its fulllength is approximately 49-54cm. generally inhabiting the warm subtropical and humid tropical parts of Asia continent and some offshore islands while widely distributed in Indochina Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, China and the Southeast. The bird inhabits the land and trees forest near water up to 800m above sea level; it is a rare resident bird in Thailand. It uses its long grasping claws to fish near the surface diving from the trees on the banks of the river that flows through the forest. It preys primarily on insects, large fish, frogs and crabs. The upperparts are reddish brown and heavily streaked with black or dark brown feather. The underparts are buff with pale whitish color highlighted with dark streaks and finer brown barring. The throat is white and can be conspicuously puffed, while the facial disk is indistinct. The irises are yellow, the feet a shade of duller yellow, and the bill is dark. Different sexes do not differ in appearance except for size. Breeding season is from December to March. It lays 1-2 white eggs, often placed in an old stick nest belonging to other birds, otherwise in a rock crevice or similar surroundings. Incubation is 38 days or

somewhat less, and the young fledge for flight after about 7 weeks. Bird’s Voice: a deep tu-hoo-hoo or a soft hup-huphup-hup-hup-hup or a loud hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu-hu. 全長４９－５４cmの非常に大きなフクロウ目フクロウ科の鳥。羽角と呼ばれる耳のような羽をもち、外見は近縁の日本の“シマフクロウ”に似ています。インド亜大陸、スリランカ、中国南東部とインドシナに分布しています。タイでは平地から海抜800ｍまでの水場近くの森林や樹木が散在する広々とした土地に生息する、稀な留鳥です。夜行性で、森林に流れる川のほとりの樹上から急降下して水面近くの魚を、長い爪で掴み捕ります。主に魚、カエル、カニや大型の昆虫を捕食します。多くのフクロウ類は羽音を減らす構造の羽を翼にもちますが、魚食性のミナミシマフクロウは水中の魚を狙うため、羽ばたくときの音を消す必要がありません。そのため羽は硬く、バサバサとうるさく羽ばたいて飛びます。鳴き声は低く張りのある声で悲しげに鳴く“hup-hup-hu”や笑い声が急激に高くなったような“hu-hu-hu-hu hu hu ”の鳴き声を発てます。繁殖期は１２月－３月。地上３０ｍまでの岩棚、岩の割れ目、樹洞、樹木に着生したシダの株、古い大きな猛禽類の巣に営巣し、わずかにクリーム色を帯びた白色の卵を１－２個産みます。
