The lives of residents living in Chiang Mai adapt to the changing times. We get up early to find something to eat at the market where meat and vegetables are sold among other items. When we want something, we automatically think of the market. Today, we have people standing in line close to us buying the same product. Next to the market is the 7-Eleven and the items sold in 7-Eleven come from the market. In general, market means a social gathering for humans to exchange and trade. In terms of economics, it means exchange or trade regardless of physical location.

Yunnan Market Location: Charoenprathet Road, Soi 1 (behind the Night Bazar, Chiang Mai) A. Muang, Chiang Mai. Time: every Friday at 5 a.m. – 1 p.m. In front of the Ban Haw Mosque is the location of a unique market set up by Yunnan Chinese and Chinese Muslims that is distinctively different from other markets in Chiang Mai. The festive mood starts early at dawn until the sun is at high noon. Shops and stalls by merchants of the two ethnic groups sell their goods on the property that used to be owned by the late Civil Master Chuang Liangruekiet. Here, you’ll find fascinating food and produce made from natural ingredients such as Puk Rice (Khao Puk) made from sticky rice crushed with black sesame seeds then grilled on an open fire topped with pure sugar cane. It’s an all-natural snack that smells and tastes so heavenly. Another favorite snack is corn pancake with sizzling corn on a pan skillfully cooked by a Muslim merchant.

Further in, you’ll find hard to find local vegetables both leafy and tuber in different forms and sizes, dilled vegetables Yunnan style spiced up with various chili and a touch of sourness, marinated tofu with chili used for seasoning fish and the famous thin pork slice Yunnan style. A must for all visitors to try is the local favorite Yunnan overnight rice patty (Khao Raem Fuen) eaten cold or hot. The shops are always crowded with people enjoying this traditional snack which could be eaten there or order a take away with all the assorted condiments generously packed by the merchant. And the ultimate take home prize is the Yunnan ‘Dew Meat’. The process of curing meat is to marinate the meat with salt letting the flavor seep into the meat. The meat is then hung from a tall pole to let the dew drops slowly preserve the meat. The price is as high as 600 baht per kilogram but the taste is worth every dew drop. The market itself is like a mirror reflecting the simple way of life for people of different ethnic groups mainly the Chinese, Muslims and local Thais living harmoniously from past to present. The diversity of food culture, religion and ethnic never created any conflicts as all are united under one flag, one nation.

Fe atu re バーンホー、雲南マーケット場所：チェンマイ県ムアン郡ジャルーンプラテート通りソイ１日時：毎週金曜、5:00-13:00 イスラムコミュニティー、バーンホーは、中国雲南省の人々と中華系イスラムの暮らすコミュニティーで、チェンマイの一般の市場とは、扱う商品がまったく違う。夜が明け始める頃から市場は活気づき、陽が頭上に来るまで開かれている。中国雲南とイスラム商人の扱う様々な商品がずらりと並ぶ。ここは嘗て、上級公務員の自宅だった。一般に人々には物珍しい商品も多い。例えば、カーオ･プックは、黒米のもち米を蒸してゴマと練り合わせ、火であぶったもの。ゴマが香ばしい、黒砂糖のソースをかけて頂く健康志向のお菓子だ。自然の香りとコク、甘みが楽しめる。玉蜀黍の生地を上げたものは、西洋人子供に言わせれば、玉蜀黍のパンケーキだが、イスラムの女主人が生地を揚げる音をきくと思わず食べてみたくなる。市場の奥へ進むと、大小の根菜類など、珍しい野菜たちが売られている。すっぱ辛い雲南漬物の種類も豊富だ。真っ赤な唐辛子も色々、豆腐と唐辛子を発酵させた魚料理のソース、雲南スタイルの豚料理を売る店もある。屋台で売られている雲南の郷土料理カオレームは是非とも試して欲しい一品だ。熱いものと冷めたもの2種類あるが、店は多くの人で賑わっている。お持ち帰りもでき、女主人が薬味もちゃんと入れてくれる。そして、この市場で外せないのが雲南ハム( ヌアナームカーン)、雲南の人々の保存食で、塩漬けにした肉を干し、肉汁の旨味を凝縮させたもの。高級食材で、お値段の方も1キロ600バーツと安くはないが、お試しあれ。バーンホー市場は中国人とイスラム、地元チェンマイの人々が長く共存してきた歴史を見せてくれる。文化と宗教、民族が混沌としたコミュニティーだが、争いごとはなく、タイという国のもと、同じ大地で平和に暮らしている。 Corn Pancake Cook by Muslim Woman

Local Market Thong Kai in Town Location: front of Thong Kai Temple, Irrigation Canal Road, next to the entrance of the Ratchaphruek Royal Garden Royal. Time: around 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. This market is a favorite among local people living in that area and tourists who often visit. This is the market that vividly paints the villager’s simple way of life that can be fully experienced and easily accessed to since it is not far away from the city. Most produce are local vegetables, seasonal insects, fish caught from ponds and local dishes I just couldn’t resist tasting. The popular shop among locals and tourists is the fresh fish stall where you can have fish prepared and ready for cooking once you get home. You’ll have a variety of Tilapia, Striped Snake Head fish, Carp or even Goby fish. A little further along the temple’s wall, you’ll find rice for people, birds and chickens. In the past, the living condition for villagers was poor because they had no sustainable livelihood. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until after His Majesty the King visited the LaHu villagers that living condition began to improve through the development and establishment of the Mok Cham Royal Project. Villagers in the area were finally able to make a living turning one poor village into an effective agricultural community offering tourist attractions such as plant nursery demonstration, organic fresh produce for sale such as delicious mangos, Japanese pumpkin, Chinese bitter gourd and taste fresh passion fruit juice. Other activities include homestay experience highlighting the simple way of life of the people embraced by the Kok River and the boat cruise along the river that reflects the villagerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bond to the flow of life.

How to get there

From down town Chiang Mai, take the Highway No. 107 Chiang Mai-Fang for 109 kilometers into Highway No. 1089. Stay on the road until you get to Kilometer 37 and turn left and continue for 200 meters. All private vehicles can be used to reach the destination. There is also public bus running from Chiang Mai to Mae Eye. Green-tailed Sunbird Aethopyga nipalensis ミドリオタイヨウチョウ This tiny 14cm long bird is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, northeast India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet and Vietnam. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. In southeast Szechwan and Yunnan, it lives in open highland woods with moss-covered trees above 1,400-2,745m. sea level. There are two subspecies inhabiting in Thailand. In sexual dimorphism, the color of the male and female are different. The above photo displays a unique species of male from Doi Inthanon, Northern Thailand. Its head is dark green, throat and tail feathers glitter with metallic gleam, upper back is maroon and a patch of crimson under the chest area. For the female, body top is dull yellow-brown while the lower surface is a combination of pale yellow and sober hues. Sunbirds are similar to hummingbirds in South America. With a metallic shine on plumage, its color dynamically changes depending on the angle of light that hits it.

スズメ目タイヨウチョウ科の小さな鳥です。インド亜大陸の北部から北東部、チベット南部・南東部、中国南西部、インドシナの海抜1,400 －2,745mの広葉常緑樹林や二次林に局地的に分布しています。タイには２つの亜種が生息しています。オスとメスの羽色が異なる性的二型で、美しい写真はタイ北西部のドイ・インタノンの固有種のオスです。頭、喉と尾羽はメタリックの暗緑色、上背は栗色、上胸は黄色、下胸に深紅色の斑があるのが特徴です。中央の尾羽は３センチ以上伸長します。メスは、体上面はにぶい黄褐色、下面は淡黄色と地味な色合いをしています。タイヨウチョウは南アメリカに分布するハチドリに類似しています。類縁関係の離れたこの２つのグループには、共通点があります。それは、羽装に金属光沢をもち、光の角度によって色彩が変化します。どちらも花の蜜を主な餌とし、先端がブラシ状の環状の舌で花蜜を吸い取ります。また花に集まる小さな虫を飛びながら捕食するのも似ています。通常はペアか単独で生活していますが、しばしば数羽の鳥が休むことなく、か細く笛を吹くような声をたてながら一緒に行動しているのが見かけられます。ドイ・インタノンの山頂付近では割りあい容易に見ることができます。

Wat Moobun （ワット･ムーブン寺）

【はじめに】 Wat Moobun（＝豚+鼻でものを探す）は、以前はあまり知られない廃寺であった。チェンマイ都を創成する場所を探しにルア族の故地を訪れたメンライ王が、后の夢に基づいて発見した金の豚の物語が、寺の縁起である。復興が始ったばかりで、資料もあまりない寺をとり上げるのは、チェンマン寺よりも古い歴史をもつ寺の存在を紹介するためである。まとまった資料がないので箇条書きでの紹介になる。ホイケーオ滝やシーウィチャイ師の像の近くにある、ルア族の古い都（ウィアン･チェトリン =都+７つの谷）の中に隠れている古刹に行き、700年の歴史を偲ばれることをお勧めする。地元でもこの寺を知る人は少ない。【場所】チェンマイとは比較にならない長い歴史をもつルア族の集落、Wiang Chet Linに行くのは簡単である。チェンマイ動物園まで行き、ドイ･ステープへの参拝道路を少し歩くとシーウィチャイ師の像に着く。そこから滝とは反対側に続く道を下ると、すでに古都ウィアン･チェトリンの中である。木立の間に池を見ながら1kmほども歩くと建設中の建物やプレハブ群の間に古い仏塔が見えてくる。古い都の西端にある廃寺である。【ルア族】ルアは、チェンマイの先住民族で、彼らが造った都／集落の多くは円形で、まわりに城壁をもつ。伝承によると都には市柱があった。ルア族の王ビランカは、ハリプンチャイのチャマテウィ女王に敗れた。Wat Moobunから指呼の間、動物園の中にある仏塔のみを残す廃寺Wat Khu Din Khao（=仏塔+土+白）も 658～757ころにルア族によって建立された。ここにもChiang Mai 都よりもずっと古い集落があり、チェンマイ動物園は、この寺の境内に造られたものだと書く情報がある。

【Wat Moobun】ランナー初代のマンライ王が、チェンマイ都より１年早く建立した。二つの寺名がある。★Wat Choti gun swannaram［choti =ピカピカ光る、gun=ブタ、swanna= 金、aram=寺］★Wat Moobun（Moo=ぶた、bun=鼻で餌を探す）仏塔はLamphunのWat Phrathat HariphunchaiのSuwanjedee 仏塔を模して造られた。寺は荒廃と復興を繰返して今日に到る。復興中の廃寺で、住職はドイ・ステープ寺の住職が兼任している。また、復興中の寺にも拘らず、十数名の僧と数十名の初心僧を擁する。【諸施設など】現在、本堂はない。古い仏塔の他に、完成しているのは大きなサーラー・カンパリアン（Sala kan prian）だけ、ウボソットは建立中である。基本的なことを付記する。サーラー・カンパリアンは僧の勉学のための施設であるが、この寺では宗教行事にも使用されている。他の資料にはないことを付記する。ステープ山への登り口、シーウィチャイ師の近くには、この寺を含め3軒の寺がある。約700 年の昔、クーナー王とスマナテラ師が白象の背に乗せた仏舎利の安置場所を求めてこの山に登ったときには、けもの道のようなものしかなかったものと思われる。そんなジャングルの中にムーブン、シーソーダ、およびクーディンカオの三寺があった。シーソーダ寺はクルバ･シーウィチャイ師が1934年に建立した新しい寺である。上記したように、仏塔のみが残る廃寺のクーディンカオ寺の、かつての寺領にチェンマイ動物園が造られたという話があるが、信頼できる資料がない。ステープ山一帯はルア族などの聖地であり、その人たちの信仰によっても建立・維持されたのだろうと思われる。

日本人の留学生の生活天田薫 My name is Kaoru Amada and I am 22 years old. My hometown is Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. I am an exchange student at Rajabhat Chiang Mai for 1 year. My university in Japan is Tenri University and I am majoring in Thai. I have a Thai name, Kao Hom, given by my Thai friends. There is an MOU between Tenri University and Rajabhat Chiang Mai University for an annual exchange program that only occurs in Chiang Mai and no other provinces. Why did you choose to study in Thailand? I like living in a country with warm tropical climate. When I was 18 years old I have been exchange studied in Singapore. I have many Thai friends. And I want to travel in Thailand. In the future if I come back to Japan I want to study Thai language in other university. How do you like living in Chiang Mai? Life in Chiang Mai is fun and not hectic like in Bangkok but transportation is hard to come by because there’s no sky train or bus route available. I usually use the service of red taxi when I need to get around. What markets have you visited in Chiang Mai? Just Central Market (Kad Luang) and Thanin Market Compare to Japanese market, how is Thai market different? Markets here sell fresh inexpensive produce but its popularity does not cause chaos. On the other side of the scale, Japanese market is quite lively as local merchants call out to customers inviting them to taste food and buy products. Presently in Japan, fresh produce markets are disappearing due to consumer’s switch to shopping more at the supermarket.

はじめまして、天田薫です。タイ人の友達がつけてくれたタイ語のニックネームはカオホーム（香り米）です。今、22歳で、神奈川県出身です。天理大学からの学生です。交換留学生として1年間にラチャパット大学で勉強しています。日本の大学は天理大学です。

どうしてタイで勉強しにきましたか？温かい国が好きです。そして、１８歳の頃シンガポールに留学た際、同じ学校のタイ人留学生たちととても気が合って仲良くなり、タイにも遊びに行き、タイがとても好きになりました。帰国後、タイ語を勉強できる大学に入り今に至ります。

チェンマイの生活はどうですか？チャンマイはバンコクに比べゆったりとした雰囲気の街です。でも、交通は結構大変です。電車やバスがないからです。どこかに行きたくなったら、よく赤い車に乗っています。

タイの市場に行ったことがありますか？はい、あります。ワロロット市場とターニン市場だけです。

タイの市場と日本の市場に比べるとどう思いますか？タイの市場の商品が安くて、新鮮なものがたくさんあります。市場なのに、全然活気がないように感じました。私は日本ではあまり市場は身近な存在ではなかったですが、日本の市場は賑やかで、商人たちは大きい声でお客さんに商品を案内します。現在、日本の市場はどんどん少なくなっています。人々は市場よりもスーパーで買い物をするようになっています。

チェンマイに住んでいる日本人に何が進めたいと思いますか？簡単なタイ語を覚えられば、生活が便利になると思います。例えば、買い物する時や場所を聞く時などです。そして、私のもう1つのオススメの場所はメーリムにあるコンパンサターン（タイ陸軍の施設）です。タイ語と英語のみですが、３００バーツで乗馬もできます。たくさんの馬がいて、山が近く景色がいいので、とてもいい感じです。

Any advice you’d like to give to Japanese people living in Chiang Mai? I would suggest they remember simple Thai words and sentences like asking for price and directions because it’s really necessary for daily living. Knowing some useful phrases will make life more convenient for you. Another place I would like to recommend is Pack Squadron at Mae Rim District (Thai Military Base) which is embraced by majestic mountains and home of beautiful horses. Here, international visitors can ride horses with riding instructors who can communicate in English. Service fee is only 300 baht.
