MR. QUESNEL

Oakwood’s 27th academic year. During the 2021-2022 school year, we gradually returned to normal operations following COVID-19 as we had a full slate of athletics, live performances of our music concerts and main stage production, Matilda, and the return of popular in-person events like Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, the International Festival, and a graduation that was fully open to the public. This year is already off to a terrific start with an increase in enrollment and that familiar and warm sense of Oakwood community on campus.

The 2021-2022 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the members of our school community gave so graciously of their time, talents, and financial resources to our school and its students during the previous school year. Every gift has a direct impact on the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhances the broad range of programs offered at Oakwood. Without this generosity and commitment, Oakwood truly would not be the special place that it is, and for that I thank all of you on behalf of everyone who works and learns here every day

Two years ago, we opened the Oakwood Innovation Lab in the Upper School thanks to the generosity of four families This lab provides our older students with a fully integrated environment that supports hands-on, personalized, projectbased learning on topics including engineering, coding, circuitry, pneumatics, sustainability, robotics, graphic design, video production, and much, much more. Having seen students thrive in this learning environment, five additional families stepped forward last year and made it possible for Oakwood to install and open a Lower and Middle School Innovation Lab in Monk Hall this fall That lab is now providing similar age-appropriate learning opportunities for students in grades K-7. Special thanks go out to the following donor families for making this new lab a reality: Jeff and Shannon Longshore, Robbie and Kristel McLawhorn, Russell and Anna Norris, Jeffrey Potter and Anna Imhoff, and Jim and Rachel Speicher

also saw Oakwood hold a fundraising disc golf tournament and receive gifts from a number of families and local businesses that will enable us to build an 18-hole disc golf course on campus this year. This course will be utilized in our PE classes during the school day, will be open to the public outside of school hours, and will host disc golf tournaments to help bring people to campus and broaden Oakwood’s exposure in the community

In addition, 2021-2022 saw Oakwood accept our fourth Monk Family Scholar to campus for the 2022-2023 school year thanks to the generosity of the Bill and Agnes Monk Family Foundation. Named in honor of longtime Oakwood supporters Bill and Agnes Monk, in early 2019 the foundation established a donor-directed endowment fund in order to provide a renewable tuition scholarship for new students entering Oakwood in grades 9 through 12 Oakwood will now have four Monk Family Scholars attending our Upper School going forward in perpetuity.

Other major areas of support for Oakwood in 2021-2022 include:

Countless volunteer hours from the members of our Oakwood community;

Annual Fund contributions of $155,000, including 100% Board, 89% faculty and staff, and over 70% parent participation; The 2022 virtual Blue Jean Ball, which grossed over $65,000; Corporate Partner support of over $90,000, plus $15,000 inkind gifts.

Oakwood has had only one mission throughout its history: to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world Having graduated our 14th class of seniors this last spring, we are continuing to see the incredible impact that our alumni are having on our world, and that impact will continue to grow with each graduating class. Your continued generosity is critical as we continue to deliver on our mission by preparing our students to become the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow

With warmest regards, Dan Quesnel, Head of School

Our Mission

The Oakwood School seeks to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world

A vibrant culture of philanthropy has sustained our ability to fulfill Oakwood’s mission for 26 years. Together we help every student attain his or her personal best. Tuition, of course, plays the largest role in our ability to serve students; yet, it only covers 93% of our annual budget.

We are fortunate to have widespread support for the school’s top giving priority the Annual Fund which benefits every student, in every classroom, every day The Fund is critical to the school’s operating budget and is the reason we so deeply appreciate broad participation from our entire Oakwood community: parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and staff, parents of alumni, and friends of the school.

The annual Blue Jean Ball Auction & Gala and our Corporate Partners contribute to operations and special projects enhancing the Oakwood experience for our students.

Also important to the school’s short- and long-term sustainability are gifts to restricted and capital projects, as well as endowment and scholarship funds. These gifts support the facilities, infrastructure, and programs necessary to deliver a 21st century learning experience

These combined philanthropic efforts and the generosity of our school community help provide our students with an exceptional educational experience and opportunities that go far beyond the classroom ensuring that Oakwood graduates are ready to thrive in college and beyond.

Oakwood parents, Robbie and Kristel McLawhorn served as our Annual Fund Co-Chairs They shared, "We led this year ’ s Annual Fund as a means of recognition and thanks to Oakwood and its teachers and staff who have done so much and established a strong history of outstanding education They continue to ask, 'How can we be better?'"

Robbie and Kristel lent their wisdom and creativity to this effort, tirelessly led a team of dedicated parent volunteers through text-athons, and rallied our current parents and faculty and staff to all-time high Annual Fund participation rates! Their belief, passion, and love for Oakwood are truly remarkable! Thank you Kristel and Robbie for leading this important campaign for Oakwood!

Now open!

Due to the generosity of five donor families, The Oakwood School will be installing a new Innovation Lab for students in kindergarten through seventh grade in time for the start of the 2022-2023 school year!

The new lab, which is being planned and built in partnership with Creative Learning Systems, will provide our younger students with age appropriate learning opportunities similar to those in our Upper School lab. The lab will allow students to master next generation skills like critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration.

This lab was made possible by the support of a number of families Their vision and generosity will benefit our current and future students for years to come, and we cannot thank them enough

Special thanks go out to Upper School Innovation Lab facilitator Chris Young for his tireless work in building our STEAM program and creating Rho Sigma Omega

Adding a second Innovation Lab, expanding our STEAM offerings to our younger students, and founding Rho Sigma Omega are additional steps forward in differentiating Oakwood as the best school in the area
