FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Oakwood Community:

It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the Head of School at The Oakwood School and to write to you as we begin Oakwood’s milestone 30th academic year with increased enrollment in each of our three divisions for the fourth straight year and a capital campaign that has raised more than 80% of its goal. The 2024-2025 school year was another fantastic one at Oakwood as we opened two new building additions, won another state athletic championship, had fantastic crowds at our performances of The SpongeBob Musical, and saw our graduating seniors average over $100,000 per student in merit-based college scholarship offers. It is truly a great time to be an Oakwood Eagle as the energy on Oakwood’s campus is palpable and the sense of community is as strong as ever.

The 2024-2025 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the members of our school community gave so graciously of their time, talents, and financial resources to our school and its students during the previous school year. Every gift has a direct impact on the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhances the broad range of programs offered at Oakwood. Without this generosity and commitment, Oakwood truly would not be the special place that it is, and for that I thank all of you on behalf of everyone who works and learns here every day.

One of the greatest opportunities currently presented to Oakwood is how we respond to the growth the Greenville area is experiencing. After an enrollment decline through the pandemic, the school has seen our student population increase by nearly 50% over the last four years to match our previous high.

That growth necessitated the building of additional classroom space in Founders Hall and a new main entrance at Agnes Q. Monk Hall. This construction was completed with funds raised through our ALL IN Capital Campaign, which has already secured over $2.0 million of its $2.5 million goal. Once remaining funds are raised, we will be able to make important upgrades to the gym floor, stage, and sound system in Agnes Q. Monk Hall.

In May, Oakwood also purchased 10.5 acres of land behind the Upper School to serve as a buffer from outside development and allow the possibility of future campus expansion.

Planned development around MacGregor Downs Road has also necessitated the addition of several security and safety measures on campus, including security laminate, a visitor management system, exterior lighting, access controls, and security cameras, most of which were installed through a significant grant the school obtained.

Other major areas of support for Oakwood in 2024-2025 include: Countless volunteer hours from the members of our Oakwood community; Annual Fund contributions of $101,632, including 100% Board, 94% faculty and staff, and over 64% parent participation; The 2025 Blue Jean Ball, which raised over $89,305 and had a successful Fund-ANeed that benefitted our science program; Corporate Partner support of over $100,000; and A $300,000 security grant through DHS/FEMA.

Oakwood has had only one mission throughout its history: to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world. Having graduated our 17th class of seniors this last spring, we are continuing to see the incredible impact that our alumni are having on our world, and that impact will continue to grow with each graduating class. We now even have Oakwood alumni making a difference right here on campus with some alumni on our faculty and others becoming Oakwood parents by enrolling their own children here.

Your generosity is critical as we continue to deliver on our mission by preparing our students to become the leaders and problem solvers of tomorrow. We look forward to celebrating our 30th year with you this year and are excited about what the future holds for Oakwood.

With warmest regards,

A More Dynamic and Secure A More Dynamic and Secure Campus Campus

Dear Oakwood Community,

I am beyond excited about the new facilities and upgrades at our school this year and I am hopeful that you will have a chance to tour them. My name is Kristel McLawhorn and I wear many hats at Oakwood: Lower and Middle School parent, PSA volunteer, coach, trustee, and Capital Campaign Chair. My 3rd grader is so pleased that his classroom is across from the new LS/MS Innovation Lab. Both he and my 5th grader are excited about the new space and equipment -- "Inno Lab" days are their favorite school days!

Rob and I strongly believe that Oakwood is the premier choice for an independent education in Eastern NC, and I suspect you feel the same way. Our family is deeply grateful to the families who came before us and had the vision for this school. They went out on a limb and stood for something when it required a good deal of courage and investment, both in time and finances. Most good things are not easy, and endeavors like this are worth working for. I’m asking you to join our family in going All In for Oakwood by supporting this Capital Campaign: to honor your student and our forebears, to continue providing these students with the best education possible, and to make dreams a reality.

Our goal for phase one is $2.5 million. I am ecstatic that our community has raised $1.4 million to date; if we can meet this match, we’ll reach $1.9 million. With your commitment, $2.5 million is achievable, and then we can watch more dreams become reality as we move to phase two. The All In campaign is aimed at bringing the best to our students in a fiscally responsible manner. We look to our community to sustain our school and ask that you make Oakwood a philanthropic priority.

All the best,

Kristel McLawhorn

All In Capital Campaign Chair

VISION TO REALITY

Mr. Dan Quesnel opened our 2024 Ribbon Cutting with the following kind words:

“We want to thank Board President Jeff Longshore, Campaign Chair Kristel McLawhorn, the Board of Trustees, the Capital Campaign Task Force, WIMCO Construction and Oakwood’s longstanding relationship with the Rawls family. We especially thank teachers – their dedication to students and outstanding work in the classroom are what is attracting and keeping all these wonderful students and producing so many happy and successful graduates.

Last year, the Board and administration saw an opportunity to help secure Oakwood’s future. The recent addition of two sections of PK3 and a second section of PK4 had become a feeder that was filling the grades above them. Enrollment was up for the second year in a row in all three divisions, and we were projecting continued enrollment growth. The problem was we were running out of space for the children who wanted and deserved the opportunity for an Oakwood education.

So we took a leap of faith. We converted the main office into an additional Lower School classroom, temporarily moved the third grade classroom out of the Lower School building, scattered several administrators to the four corners of campus, and committed to building a Lower School addition and secure and welcoming visitors’ entrance and main office. Rather than turn children away, we made the decision to build these additions while we raised the funds for them.

Poor Ms. Christine spent the year running the main office out of a space that was barely big enough for her and her squirrel memorabilia, let alone for all the students and visitors she welcomes each day.

Thanks to that leap, I am proud to announce we are now up in all three divisions for a third year in a row and are approaching a historically high enrollment without compromising class sizes or the quality of the education we offer.

And today we officially open our Lower School addition complete with 2 new third grade classrooms, a permanent home for our LS/MS Innovation Lab, a faculty work room, and a LS coordinator’s office. We are also opening the new visitor entrance, main office, and a front desk and reception area worthy of Ms. Christine and the many guests who visit Oakwood.

The journey does not end today though, as that leap of faith was not only that enrollment would continue to grow, but also that our community would show the faith in us that we have shown in them.

So before we cut this ribbon, I wanted to thank those of you who have already committed to our capital campaign and encourage the rest of you to join us.”

CELEBRATING OUR NEW SPACE

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

With momentum for the ALL IN Capital Campaign at a high, a dedicated alumni family issued a challenge to our community - if we could raise $250,000 in six weeks, then they would match that amount.

So many people joined us as we focused our collective energy, expertise, and resources towards creating a brighter future.

Led by our Campaign Chair Kristel McLawhorn, supportive Board members and loyal volunteers, we set out to meet the challenge. The excitement was electric as we continued to gain momentum to meet our fundraising goals.

Dr. Trey and Kristi Sloan kicked-off the challenge by donating the inaugural gift, in honor of Brody (5 ) and Iggy (K). The Fairbrothers were one of many families to follow: “We want to see Oakwood continue to serve our community and grow by leaps and bounds. This is why it has been so important for our family to support the school through volunteering and philanthropy." We couldn’t have said it better!

Together, we are ALL IN! Our six week fundraising total was a remarkable $603,350.

This generated an additional matching challenge gift by an alumni family of $100,000 that generated a total of $118,450.

We raised $722,530 including the matching gifts!

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Thanks to the efforts of Dan Quesnel and Board President Jeff Longshore, Oakwood recently purchased 10.5 acres of land directly behind the Upper School (highlighted in blue in the photo).

This new acquisition, which was made without incurring any debt, provides the school with the option to grow in the future and creates a buffer from outside development.

Eagles Supporting Eagles!

We are Rachel and Jim Speicher, and we want to thank you for your support of the Oakwood Annual Fund for 2024. Our theme this year is “Eagles Supporting Eagles” because of so many ways that we are ALL IN for our school community! The enthusiasm and dedication we have for our school and community is also reflected in so many Oakwood families.

We find ourselves amazed at the accomplishments our Oakwood students are able to achieve at such a young age; We are proud to be a part of a school that educates young people who end up having an incredible impact on the world.

We continue to be impressed with the strength of the Oakwood community and the commitment of the faculty, staff, and families to make Oakwood a supportive and welcoming place that challenges students to discover and become the best version of themselves. Dear Oakwood Community,

We have been Oakwood parents for six years and supporters of the school since moving to Greenville in 2015. Our son Jefferson is in 4th grade, and our daughter Caroline is in 2nd grade class. Both started at Oakwood in PK4 with Mrs. Painter and Mrs. Long.

Each year, Oakwood holds an Annual Fund Campaign to close the gap between tuition income and other sources and operational expenses.

Every dollar raised is directly used to support the education of the children inside and out of the classroom. We are thankful to each Oakwood family who gave as generously as they were able to the Eagles Supporting Eagles Annual Fund. These donations ensure that Oakwood can continue to offer and support the amazing learning opportunities we have all come to know and love about an Oakwood education.

We are really happy to be able to support Oakwood as the Annual Fund Chairs. Thank you for your continued support of our wonderful school!
