Mr. Q Dear Oakwood Community: It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the Head of School at The Oakwood School and write to you as we begin Oakwood’s 26th academic year.

During the 2020-2021 school year, we continued to adjust to the challenges presented by COVID-19 while successfully offering our students inperson classes throughout the year. We felt it was critical that we do so in order to provide our students the best educational experience possible.

While we had to modify many of our events, we were still able to compete in all of our athletic seasons, hold virtual performances of our main stage production, Alice in Wonderland, and host many other virtual events, including Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, the Blue Jean Ball, and our music concerts. We were even able to hold an in-person graduation in Monk Hall for the Class of 2021 and their families and friends.

The 2020-2021 Annual Report provides a snapshot of the many ways in which the members of our school community gave so graciously of their time, talents, and financial resources to our school and its students during the previous school year. Every gift directly impacts the lives of our students, faculty, and staff and enhances the broad range of programs offered at Oakwood. Without this generosity and commitment, Oakwood truly would not be the special place that it is, and for that, I thank all of you on behalf of everyone who works and learns here every day.

Last year I gave special thanks to the donors whose generosity allowed us to install the Oakwood Innovation Lab. This fully integrated environment supports hands-on, personalized, project-based learning on topics including engineering, coding, circuitry, pneumatics, sustainability, robotics, graphic design, video production, and much, much more. Students have now been working together and learning in that lab for a full school year, and their growth and accomplishments have been fantastic. For example, students in the lab presented at the STEAM Leadership Conference at Georgia Tech, won additional equipment for the lab with their video submission to the Creative Learning Systems multimedia contest, and even repaired the sign in front of the Upper School using the lab’s 3D printer.

After taking a year off due to COVID-19, we are happy to report that Oakwood’s shooting team will be back in action for the 2021-2022 school year.

Thankfully, all of the team’s equipment was kept safe and in working condition at Hunters’ Pointe Sporting Clays due to countless hours put in by volunteers and the new gun safe and shed that was purchased for the school by a generous donor installed at Hunters’ Pointe.

In addition, 2020-2021 saw Oakwood accept our second and third Monk Family Scholars to campus for the 2021-2022 school year, thanks to the generosity of the Bill and Agnes Monk Family Foundation. Named in honor of longtime Oakwood supporters and alumni grandparents Bill and Agnes Monk, in early 2019, the foundation established a donor-directed endowment fund to provide a renewable tuition scholarship for new students entering Oakwood in grades 9 through 12. As a result, Oakwood will add a fourth Monk Family Scholar next year and then have four Monk Family Scholars going forward in perpetuity.

Other major areas of support for Oakwood in 2020-2021 include: Countless volunteer hours from the members of our Oakwood community; Annual Fund contributions of $ 149,025, including 100% Board, 90% faculty and staff, and over 77% parent participation; The 2021 virtual Blue Jean Ball, which grossed over $204,000; and Corporate Partner support of $78,000, plus $15,000 in In-Kind gifts.

Oakwood has had only one mission throughout its history: to instill in our students the strength of character, the creativity, and the wisdom to make a difference in the world. Having graduated our 13th class of seniors this last spring, we are now seeing the incredible impact that our alumni are already having on our world. That impact will continue to grow with each graduating class. Your continued generosity is critical as we continue to deliver on our mission by equipping our students to become the leaders and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
